INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. The purpose of this paper is to present the key elements in a system; study of the electrical system for a timing and/or tilling operation. The ability of an electrical system to function in a reliable fashion at its proper levels is essential for an operation to be successful. A system study consists of a load study for determining the capability of the electrical network to provide power to the various loads and a short circuit study for determining the capability of the electrical protective equipment to properly protect against fault conditions. The sequence of events in a system study is data acquisition, determining the electrical parameters and analyzing the ability of the system to meet these requirements. If the system is small, herd calculations will be the manner in which the study will be conducted; if it is large then commuters will be used. A load study has as its objectives the determination of the capability and reliability of the source of power, transformers and conductors to satisfactorily deliver power to the loads at an acceptable voltage level. The Information required is a single line diagram showing the source, transformers, conductors and loads.

Lime, soda ash and similar precipitants have been the industry standard for treatment of acid rock drainage (ARD) because of their proven ability and low per-gallon operational cost. However, these methods carry serious environmental drawbacks and high life-cycle costs. KEECO’s Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) technology has all the positive characteristics of conventional ARD-treatment systems but none of the drawbacks. SME achieves highly effective treatment in a single step, provides options for ARD prevention and recovery of metals, requires lower capital expenditures, generates smaller volumes of higher-density sludge, consistently passes leach tests, and eliminates long-term liabilities associated with potential metal remobilization and hazardous waste landfilling.

Until a few years ago tunnel construction was based exclusively on experience. In recent years, however, numerical models have increasingly become an integrated part of tunnel design [2]. These models permit good evaluation of the tunnel's support behavior even before it is designed. In particular, numerical methods are highly suited for the development of new construction methods. The prerequisite for this is the application of high-performance pre- and postprocessors, permitting the design engineer to come to a quick interpretation of the analysis results. In future, 3D analysis will take on increasing significance, for which reason this paper also deals with this type of models.

The utility of yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in the separation of quartz from hematite is demonstrated. Yeast cells, as well as their metabolites, functioned as flotation collectors, depressants or flocculants and dispersants for hematite and quartz. Interaction between yeast and the above minerals resulted in significant surface chemical changes, rendering quartz surfaces hydrophobic and hematite hydrophilic. Mineral-specific extracellular proteins and exopolysaccharides were secreted by yeast cells when grown in the presence of quartz and hematite, respectively. Quartz could be efficiently separated from hematite through microbially induced flotation and selective flocculation.

The economics of precious metals -- depending upon who is involved --could be the economics of hope, of fear, indeed of profit and perhaps survival. For those investors seeking capital gains in a puzzling economy, precious metals involve the economics of hope. Those who are convinced that currency soon won't be worth the paper it's printed on turn to precious metals because of the economics of fear. Gold and silver have been a storehouse of wealth since biblical times. The economics of fear during the past 500 years on the Continent has caused almost every European family to make sure a private stockpile or hoard of gold, silver or coins is at hand in case the paper currency of their country undergoes the kind of disaster that came to the German Mark after World War I. Understandably, for mining companies involved in the production of precious metals, the elements of operations and management are directly concerned with the economics of profit -- and perhaps survival. To the American miner the price of precious metals in the marketplace is a matter of daily concern. After decades of selling silver to the US Government at 64.64 cents an ounce, producing silver mines suddenly became faced with prices breaking $5, $10 and $20 per ounce, and approaching $50 an ounce during the period 1978-1981. What should the miner expect one year in the future? Five years?

The first wagon trail across Loveland Pass was built in 1869 thus starting the struggle between the Colorado Rockies and interstate travel. The 1st Pioneer Bore underneath Loveland Pass at the Continental Divide in Colorado was attempted between 1941 and 1943 and was abandoned due to ground conditions at the Loveland Fault. Construction on the nearby Eisenhower Tunnel began in 1967 and was completed in 1973. Numerous challenges associated with tunneling, including at 11,000 ft were overcome. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the history of investigation and construction challenges associated with the Eisenhower Tunnel to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). The literature on four different topics is re¬viewed herein for purposes of mathematical mod¬eling of mine water inflow. The first of the topics reviewed is modeling of fissured or fractured ma¬terials; the second is general Darcy based flow models; the third is field methods for determining fracture flow properties; and the fourth is methods used presently for determining mine water inflows. The four topics are considered in the foregoing order. FRACTURE FLOW MODEL Two basic types of fracture flow models have been developed. The first type uses various tech¬niques for space averaging to obtain the equations. Systems are considered in which the porous media properties vary smoothly enough and the fracturing is sufficiently profuse and well distributed that the locally averaged properties are meaningful when viewed on the macroscopic scale. The final result is that a coefficient is used which is similar to saturated hydraulic conductivity and in many cases, simply is hydraulic conductivity. In other cases, the coefficient is apparent hydraulic conductivity be¬cause the response from flow in the fractures is more rapid than flow in the pore spaces. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the contin¬uum approach. Some of the papers on this type of problem are by Duguid (1973), Verner et al. (1974), Owili-Eger (1975), Duguid and Abel (1974), duPrey and Weill (1974), and O'Neill (1978). Duguid and Lee (1977) also considered heat flow in the fluid and the porous medium. These papers all result in various types of computer programs. Some papers on this topic that do not result in computer programs are by Snow (1968, 1969) and Streltsova (1976). Some of the foregoing articles consider con¬solidation of the porous media and the resulting effect on hydraulic conductivity. Barenblatt et al. (1960) developed an analytical solution for fracture flow and discussed the time that is involved in the drainage process and the effect that fracture flow has on the drainage time. The second type of fracture flow model con¬siders the width of the fractures as a function of the pressure in the field. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the discontinuum approach. This approach often requires two finite element programs that consider the stress in the material and the flow in the fractures separately. The pro¬grams are then linked to arrive at the final solution. Some of the articles that consider the interrela¬tionship between pressure and the size of the frac¬ture but do not use computer solutions are Gringarten et al. (1975), Narasimhan and Palen (1979), and Witherspoon et al. (1979). Papers that use a linked computer program between stress and flow are by Ayatollahi (1978), Gale et al. (1974), and Noorishad et al. (1971). Ayatollahi's program is primarily for the petroleum industry because it does not consider the effect of gravity. Ayatollahi assumes that pressure effects are very large in com¬parison to gravity effects. This assumption would apply only to very deep aquifers. Articles that consider fracture flow on a more applied basis are by Wittke et al. (1972), who con¬siders that the flow is entirely through fissures and negligible through the pores of the rock. Gringarten and Witherspoon (1972) developed type curves that may be used for analysis of fracture flow systems; the curves are based on the assumption that it is possible to distinguish between aquifers with hor¬izontal and vertical fractures and that it is possible to analyze the system as an equivalent anisotropic homogeneous porous medium with a single fracture with much higher permeability. Wet-drum magnetic separators are used extensively for upgrading iron ore and for magnetite recovery in dense-medium circuits. In this study the performance of a continuous, laboratory wet-drum magnetic separator was evaluated with and without the application of ultrasonic energy when processing dense medium slurries. Test variables included magnetic-to-nonmagnetic ratio, solids concentration, and nonmagnetic materials. The results indicate that under certain conditions, the purity of the magnetic material increased after ultrasonic treatment.

Long-term stability, appropriate taxation and incentive policies are essential to attract and stimulate investment in the mineral sector. An outline of Ontario's $4.6 billion industry and associated tax incentives is presented. Producers are offered incentives under The Mining Tax Act, federal and provincial income tax acts for exploration and development by reducing Me after tax cost to 13-25¢ for each dollar spent. The Mining Tax Act provides generous processing incentives which have positive effects in enhancing investment and economic advantages of building processing facilities. Non-mining companies and entrepreneurial individuals can receive 25% of eligible exploration expenditures in grants/tax credits under the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program.

Electrostatically charged water droplets efficiently suppress breathable dust produced during open air rock crushing operations, according to recently completed independent tests conducted for the Environmental Protection Agency. Since a primary rock crusher produces very heavy clouds of dust, this application was selected as an appropriate test site to measure the efficiencies of new "charged fogging" equipment in mining and mineral processing operations. EPA's Industrial Environmental Research Laboratory, Research Triangle Park, NC, contracted TRC-Environmental Consultants Inc. of Wethersfield, CT, to conduct a full-scale demonstration of a recently developed electrostatic fogger, designed to project a charged fog spray at distances up to 15.2 m. Test results indicated overall fogger efficiencies of approximately 70%. The Fogger IV* employed in these tests is reportedly the largest charged logger ever made, with an extremely long operating range. The original fogger was designed for indoor dust control; this fourth generation version is designed for fugitive dusts, indoor and outdoor, and has an operating range up to 15.2 in.

The contract for the construction of the Inline Pump Station for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District involves the sinking of three shafts and the excavation of a pump chamber. The shafts are being sunk to a depth of 104 meters and pass through 52m of sediments before encountering dolomitic bedrock. The pump chamber is constructed in dolomite. The sediments are alluvial, estuarine and lacustrine in origin, with some ice margin deposits. They comprise loosely consolidated fine to coarse grained sand, silts, clays and gravels, and they are heavily saturated with a water content often above 60%. The water table is at a depth of 3m. The dolomite is silurian, generally dense, with some clay-filled vugs and shale partings. Until 1983, underground construction in the Milwaukee area had been limited to depths of 26m in the sediments and 20m in the dolomites. Water control methods had included caissons, compressed air, extensive internal and external dewatering, and grouting. Flows of 20 liters per second were commonplace with as much as 80 liters per second being encountered in the rock. However, in 1984 work was commenced on the deep sections of the Milwaukee sewerage scheme with the letting of three major contracts including the Inline Pump Station. With excavation taking place at greater depths, it become obvious that previous methods of water control would be inappropriate. To protect against major inrushes of high pressure water in the rock, an extensive program of pre-grouting from the surface was specified. Water control in the sediments was left to the discretion of the contractor and in each case freezing was choosen. This paper describes in detail the grouting and freezing procedures.

The last decade has seen an enormous increase in the use of contractors right across the Australian mining industry. So much so that contractors now operate 33 of the 68 underground metalliferous mines around Australia and are making significant inroads into iron ore in the west and coal in the east. Safety used to be a low priority for many contractors. The picture has changed dramatically in recent years as most contractors take a far more professional approach to safety management. This paper examines the changes that have occurred and the requirements for effectively managing safety in a contracting environment.

The Lower Cretaceous salt deposits of the Gabon Basin and Congo Basin were said down on ton of an Burly Cretaceous Lato Jurassic, continental graben fill that represent!) the rifting phase of the Afro-American continent. The salt 13 characterized by high percentages of potash and magnesium salts and the scarcity of sulphates and carbonates. The salt probably originated from a brine that was already enriched in high-soluble salts before entering the Gabon Congo basins. Their low-solubility equivalents are found in the Cuanza Basin of Angola. Commercial mining of the potash salt is only possible in those onshore areas where it is essentially undisturbed, shallow and of the right chemical composition. These conditions are net in Congo where the Holle mine produces from rich sylvinite deposits.

Mine Development Associates, Inc. was formed in March of 1987 to provide mine engineering assistance to the mineral industry. To be competitive with other firms, Mine Development must be able to provide quick and accurate ore reserves and mine plans for clients. Commercially available mining software was necessary for Mine Development to assist the client. This paper describes how Mine Development chose mining software, the time involved in getting up to speed, and several case histories of how the software is used. The case histories discussed include: * 3,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 5,000,000 ton gold deposit in South Dakota. * 1,000,000 ton gold deposit in Australia. * +100,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 25,000,000 ton carbonate deposit in California.

The influence of passageway fires on ventilation flows was investigated in three horizontal fire tunnel s: 1. a laboratory-scale fire tunnel network, 2. a small-scale fire-plume tunnel, and 3. a large- scale simulated mine gallery. Wood was used in the first and third tunnel and gas-burners were used in the second one to generate passageway fires. Experimental measurements included gas mass flow rate, velocity, temperature and pressure in the passageways and exhaust fans. The overall and local effects of the fires were investigated by comparing these measurements obtained before and during the fires. Results show that a passageway fire essentially increases the flow resistances of the passageways of a tunnel flow network by virtue of volatile fuel mass injection and high combustion temperatures. The ventilation air flow rate is consequently throttled to lower values than that before the fire. At severe throttling, reverse flow occurs. Conditions for reverse flow are characterized by two Froude numbers based on gas velocity and density upstream of the fire, and height of the passageway. The Froude numbers and the characteristics of the passageway fire are necessary to analyze mine ventilation/fire interaction and to predict mine ventilation patterns during fires.

I commend the authors on examining an interesting method of shaft lining and attempting to improve safety in a dangerous environment by remotely installing the shaft lining. It is important, though, to not trade off shaft lining safety for long-term mine safety by lining an intake shaft with combustible material. In many operations, the mine utilities are installed next to the lining of the intake shaft, supplying a possible ignition source if damaged or overloaded. Although the polyurethane studied in the paper is of relatively high density, no mention is made of the flame retardency of the samples. When exposed to heat, small amounts of polyure¬thane will melt and bum but are extinguished when the heat source is removed. If large surface areas of combustible polyurethane - a tunnel or mine shaft - are exposed to ignition heat sources that are not removed or extinguished early, an uncontrollable, fuel rich fire may result with high carbon monoxide levels, low oxygen concentrations, and greatly increased burning rates that can have devastating effects on the ventilation system and miners' safety.

The New South Ferry Terminal in the New York City Transit system represents an important milestone for the city. This is the first station designed and built in the 21st century. The design of the fire safety system included relying on Computational Fluid Dynamics to analyze the dispersion of heat and smoke, and modelling of people egress to determine the egress requirements. The project also looked into how to protect the structure from the heat exposure in order to meet the fire rating requirements. This paper provides an overview of the fire safety design approach taken to design the new South Ferry Terminal station in lower Manhattan and looks into fire modelling, structural fire protection, and station evacuation.
