Accurate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in feasibility study and evaluation of design alternatives of mining projects. In this paper, capital and operation costs of backhoe loaders are estimated using multiple linear regression (MLR), based on principle component analysis (PCA). These cost functions are consisted of five independent variables; bucket size, digging depth, dump height, weight and horse power. The MLR is conducted in two steps. At the first correlation between independent variables is omitted using PCA technique. Thereafter, MLR functions are established using selected significant PCs and total cost functions are constituted as functions of initial variables. At the end, accuracy of functions are evaluated using mean absolute error rate method.

A review is given of the present applications of random sets and integral geometry in fragmentation and liberation models of ores and minerals. Although attempts have ben made in the past to apply such mathematical techniques to the comminution of solids, it is shown that it would not result in major progress. In liberation modelling, it is demonstrated that the approach can lead to fruitful results. Following a recent paper by Davy (1984), a model of liberation prediction is developped, which can be calibrated far ore texture and breakage using image analyzers. The model is demonstrated for the case of a Poisson polyhedra ore texture and monodisperse fragment size. The model enables to predict the complete composite particle distribution, and is thus valuable for integration of ore breakage models with minerals separation models.

The residues produced during the incineration of leather scraps contain significant amount of chromium which can be recovered and reused in the tanning industry. The objective of this study is to develop a cost effective method for chromium recovery from leather ashes produced during the incineration of leather scraps using a fluidized bed incinerator. The entire process investigated involves fusion of leather ash with sodium carbonate in air to oxidise chromium to sodium chromate, leaching with distilled water to dissolve chromates, and chromium reduction from the hexavalent to trivalent state by sodium thiosulphate solution. The main factors affecting chromium extraction, such as temperature, reaction time, and sodium carbonate to leather ash ratio, were investigated. Based on the results obtained, almost 100% Cr extraction can be obtained at 700°C fusion temperature, sodium carbonate to ash weight ratio equal to 3 and retention time longer than 50 min.

High-fidelity, immersive training is known for its learning and logistical benefits. While other industries have used virtual reality (VR) for decades, the same uptake has not been seen in mining. NIOSH recently developed an adaptable, scalable VR training platform, VR Mine Rescue Training (VR-MRT), which has attracted significant industry interest. NIOSH is using VR-MRT to understand the barriers to adoption and implementation of VR. As a part of a larger effort to assess the effectiveness and implementation of VR-MRT, researchers have conducted pre-implementation interviews. In this paper, the authors use feedback from individuals at various implementation levels to assess the acceptability and appropriateness of VR-MRT and identify potential implementation barriers for VR more generally. Researchers also describe ongoing efforts to overcome these barriers as NIOSH works to position VR-MRT as a supplemental resource more generally for mine safety training.

Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) found in dust generated by various mining processes is an important occupational hazard in the underground coal-mining industry. Exposure can lead to disabling and incurable diseases, including coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), silicosis and lung cancer [1,2]. Clusters of rapidly progressive CWP have been observed in the Appalachian regions of eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia, and recent cases have been generally more severe and showing more rapid progression. CWP is approximately four times as common among long-tenured underground coal miners in central Appalachia than long-tenured underground miners in the rest of the United States, and 20.6 percent of long-tenured underground miners in central Appalachia were suffering from the disease as of 2017.

The present paper attempts to characterize the breakage properties of a brittle rock, quartz, at different size fractions when compressed at various loads in a confined piston die.  This is to understand the interaction between the various parameters affecting the breakage behavior of a brittle solid in a confined zone. Application of the results may lead to improving the energy efficiency in the size-reduction units, which use compression as the main stressing force.

"INTRODUCTION Industries around the globe have been making significant advancements in recent years due to innovations in automation technology. With the implementation of modern automation technology, professionals in process automation or plant operations can expect significant and exciting change, and the mining and mineral processing industries are no exception. From 2000 to 2010, the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) reported that an increased output and increased value of most metals has resulted in a rise in global metal and mineral process industries from $214 billion to $644 billion. [1] Since most productivity increases in mining and mineral process industries have been achieved through the ability to process lower grade ores with improved efficiency and larger equipment, these industries have begun to adopt advanced automation and control technologies. Despite a growth slow-down, the mining and mineral processing industries are poised for continued and sustainable growth and development due to an increasing demand for energy minerals and emerging technologies requiring minerals and metals previously not demand. However, as these industries becomes more automated, new challenges are arising on the horizon. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB John Payne from BP is credited with first using the term Demographic Time Bomb to describe the upcoming crisis in the process industry in finding experienced operations personnel. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years. This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, this implies that these skilled mining and mineral process professionals are an aging population with irreplaceable knowledge and experience that are expected to retire in the next 5-10 years. While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences."

Productivity from large walking draglines is primarily dependent on operator skills. This machine may be in operation three shifts a day, 364 days a year, and its output is directly related to coal uncovered and mine profitability. Dragline operators must have highly developed manual skills and be knowledgeable in mine planning and working strategies. When using equipment costing more than $25 million, some formal training is usually required before an operator is allowed to assume complete con¬trol; however, dragline operators rarely receive any structured training before operating these giant excavators. A form of apprenticeship is usually followed where an operator candidate progresses from a groundsman to an oiler position. As an oiler, he is permitted to operate the dragline for short periods under supervision. After apprenticeship, the operator is considered sufficiently prepared to operate the largest, most powerful machine at the mine. The apprenticeship training method has obviously provided the surface mining industry with skilled dragline operators; however, conditions are arising that require a realistic and effective training tool that can be accessed by mining companies. New mines -either planned, under construction, or recently opened in the West-do not have access to a pool of experienced operators and oilers as do Midwest mines. As coal mining activities increase in both the West and Midwest, demand for trained dragline operators could be required in a short amount of time. Also, the more productive techniques along with sound basics of strip mining are sometimes lost in the informal "OJT" training method. Modern draglines are the pacemakers of the strip mine, and are simply too expensive to be used as a training device where lost productivity and susceptibility to damage can directly affect mine output. The Dragline Training System is a logical first step in formally educating or retraining operators. The program, started by the US Bureau of Mines and continued by McDonnell Douglas Electronics Co. under contract with the US Department of Energy, was installed and evaluated at DOE's Carbondale Mining Technology Center in Carterville, IL, last year. It is now being operated by Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. System Description The Dragline Training System addresses specific environments and work practices encountered during an actual mining operation at a midwestern US surface mine. This area was chosen because of its high number of strip mines using large walking draglines. Most draglines in the region are Bucyrus-Erie 1370, 1450, and 2570 models, so the dragline trainer was patterned after the company's 1370 machine. Operating and emergency controls are sufficiently standardized for most large walking draglines, and peculiar dynamics and responses from any specific dragline can be programmed into the computer system. The computer simply prompts the user to select the manufacturer and any peculiar response or rate changes needed. A 46-m3 (60-cu yd) bucket is simulated, but for closer simulation, various bucket configurations can be provided. Dragline Trainer The dragline trainer uses the TV-model simulation technique. A scaled model of the dragline is positioned in a model mine. A television camera is positioned at the operator's theoretical eyepoint, and the view captured is projected into a large screen in full scale. The screen is positioned in front of the operator seated in a full-size cab at Bucyrus-Erie controls. By manipulating the controls, the trainee can operate the model dragline and observe its reaction in the television display. In addition to housing dragline controls and consoles, the wooden, oversized cab contains the digital computer, terminal, video recorder and monitor, power switch box, air conditioner, and has enough room for the instructor and five student observers. The 50:1 scaled dragline model contains servo-controlled functions for hoist, drag, swing, delta swing, and longitudinal and lateral position. The delta swing provides bucket lag during swing and a realistic pendulum action when the swing is terminated. The over-responsive second order servo system is designed to provide hoist, drag, and swing rates exceeding present draglines. In all cases, position servos are used for better control and sta¬bility. The normal rate operation of an actual dragline is computed for the specific machine and presented to the servo amplifiers as iterative position commands increasing or decreasing

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. "Understanding the airflow patterns in and around the longwall panel can help to identify poorly ventilated areas that may be prone to methane accumulation. Ventilation network modeling provides quick simulation time, and flexibility in adjusting airway parameters and ventilation controls. Such modeling is effective for analyzing linear ventilation networks in underground mines, but cannot compute flows in caved areas of hard rock mines or longwall gobs. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) enables a more detailed investigation of the interaction between the airflows in these caved areas but requires much longer computational times, designing complex meshes and determination of a variety of modeling parameters. Airway friction factors and ventilation controls are simple to implement in a network model but can be difficult to model and adjust in CFD. This paper will focus on using mine ventilation network simulation to identify and analyze key parameters that are affecting airflow distribution in and around the longwall panels, prior to more detailed analysis with CFD modeling, using the example of a longwall coal mine. INTRODUCTION In longwall coal mine ventilation systems common in the U.S., the main purpose of bleeder ventilation is to dilute methane gas and prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in the caved, poorly ventilated gob areas and adjacent mine workings. In longwall operation, these critical areas include the development headings inby the longwall face, and the gob. Methane-air explosions in these areas may be ignited by spontaneous combustion, rock-on-rock friction and other sources. Although rare, ignitions due to rock-on-rock friction caused by roof falls caving into the longwall gob are possible and were suspected in the Willow Creek mine explosions in 1998 and 2000 (Elkins et al., 2001; McKinney et al., 2001). Rock-on-rock frictional ignitions are difficult to prevent, as they occur in inaccessible areas. Therefore, rendering the gob area inert is essential to prevent the formation of explosive mixtures. Research by Gilmore et al. (2015) and Brune et al. (2015) has shown that gob inertization can be a difficult or impossible when using bleeder systems, since the flow of gases through the gob depends on the gob permeability and the amount of fresh air leaking from the face and the immediate roof caving conditions cannot be controlled by the mine operator. Having the ability to predict the location where explosive gas zones (EGZs) form inside the gob will be helpful for designing the best ventilation setup to minimize explosion and fire risks."

Coal ribs present a major safety hazard in underground mines, and there is currently no unified approach for their design in the United States. To tackle this issue, this study investigated the stability of underground coal pillar ribs under development load. Utilizing over a thousand 3DEC models, a framework for calculating coal pillar rib rating (CPRR) was developed. A detailed step-by-step method was outlined for computing the CPRR based on a 3DEC analysis, which was then validated with various 3DEC models, demonstrating a strong correlation between the two models. The results demonstrated that the rib factor of safety (RibFOS) under development load is directly proportional to CPRR, coal mine roof rating (CMRR), and floor strength, and inversely proportional to the overburden depth and rib height. Moreover, a regression equation was formulated to predict the RibFOS based on the aforementioned parameters. Furthermore, empirical relationships were developed between the RibFOS and the applied primary rib support density (PRSD) in U.S. coal mines. To ease the calculations, a stand-alone application, Design of Rib Support (DORS), was developed. This application can be used to assess rib stability and easily calculate CPRR, RibFOS, and PRSD.

The ability to identify hazards during a workplace examination is a critical skill for mineworkers to have in order to maintain a safe workplace. While research suggests that being able to successfully recognize hazards requires a complex set of competencies, it is unclear which competencies are most critical to adequately perform a workplace examination. This paper presents a hazard recognition competencies framework as an explanation of the competencies that affect mineworker hazard recognition. To better understand how the industry is selecting and preparing workplace examiners, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed nine health and safety (H&S) professionals at surface stone, sand and gravel mine sites throughout the United States. These interviews verified that the competencies included in the hazard recognition competencies framework agree with perceptions of the interviewed H&S professionals, who also provided validity for the critical role these competencies play. Finally, the results of this study are presented within the context of current NIOSH research findings related to hazard recognition.

The replacement of Boston’s elevated Highway I-93 running north to south through the heart of the city with 8-lane tunneled roadways, coupled with the underground extension of Highway I-90 eastward to Logan Airport, has earned the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project the position of the largest infrastructure project in the U.S. today. The gigantic interchange featuring numerous ramps where these two main branches of the Artery intersect required the construction of three huge jacked tunnel boxes that were pushed beneath eight active Amtrak and commuter rail tracks that had to remain undisturbed in spite of poor geology and a minimum of cover between the track beds and the tunnel crowns. Ground freezing was chosen as the method of stabilizing the soil over the tunnels, and it was extended in one area to stabilize the ground at the intersection between the tunnels and an abutting deep cut-and-cover excavation. Because many standard geotechnical instruments consist basically of open standpipes filled with water, it was a major challenge to keep them de-iced and in a condition to provide data on vertical and lateral ground movements. The efforts to do so are herein described.

The generalized rail haulage simulator described in this paper is an outgrowth of the need to expand a previously developed single level simulator to permit analysis of production problems where intermediate car storage is used. Many of the ideas of the former single level simulator, which is an integral part of an Underground Generalized Materials Handling Simulator (UGMHS), have been used in model development. In addition, experience gained in applying the earlier model to a variety of operating conditions has been heavily relied on. The generalized rail haulage simulation model can operate as an independent system and, as such, can be used to analyze rail haulage systems using production distributions as data input. In addition, this model is designed to replace the present rail haulage sub-assembly in the UGMHS model and the linking procedure has been integrated into the model. The flow of coal from production sections in UGMHS, for example, fill the mine cars and a condition of no empty cars at a loading station will shut down in by production systems.

The potash mine and refinery of AMAX Chemical Corporation is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad on the north end of the potash producing areas. This property was developed between 1949-1952 and production of muriate began in August 1952. Two shafts, located 400 feet apart, were sunk to the ore zone 900 feet below the surface. A 15-foot diameter ore hoisting shaft equipped with a 1000-ton ore pocket, crusher and automatic skip loading equipment plus a 20-foot diameter service shaft with a curtain wall for exhausting air were provided. Sylvinite production to date has been from the first ore zone, stratigraphically, the lowest of ten identified mineralized zones in the salt section. This first ore zone has been the top producer of Muriate of Potash over the years. In our area we do have some very marginal mineralization in the third ore zone some 35 feet above the first. We have not mined from this seam as yet but we are investigating the economics very closely with access slopes and an experimental mining panel. Our ore seam is generally flat lying but does have local gentle rolling with grades from 2% to 5%. The mine was designed and developed from the beginning with conventional mining practices and rail haulage from the mining section to the ore pocket. As mining progressed in the early years, production increased from less than one million tons annually to a maximum of 3,935,000 tons in 1964. Efficiency also kept pace with the increasing production and continually improved until the efficiency of the production crews reached an average of 100.3 tons per manshift in 1964.

Increased recycling of waste paper has been emphasized in recent years in both the USA and Canada for environmental and economic reasons. Removal of ink particles from the waste paper pulp is therefore necessary. One of the most promising methods for ink removal is froth flotation. Our study investigated the feasibility of a simplified flotation scheme which showed that about 90-92% ink removal can be achieved while 95-97% ink removal is achievable if a hydrophobic polymer is used ahead of flotation. The clean paper pulp recovery was over 90%. The effects of pulping pH, flotation pH, and concentrations of flotation and polymeric reagents are discussed in the paper.

Computer-assisted instruct ion is now being used in areas as diversified as training handicapped children to preflight simulation for airline pilots. This paper reports on two courses that have been developed at SDSM&T on the PLATO system for miner safety training. Advantages of computer-assisted instruct ion for this type of training is discussed. (Figures show examples of actual use.) A discussion will be given on other applications such as maintenance troubleshooting, training of engineers and managers at remote sites and training of local people for working in the mine.

"In this paper, recent progress with respect to the flotation chemistry of soluble salt minerals is reviewed, and some of the more relevant issues including the hydration states of ions, the interfacial phenomena of salt surfaces and the flotation behavior of selected soluble salts are discussed. Due to the high solubility, the flotation of most soluble salts has to be carried out in their saturated brines. Anecdotal evidence has suggested that the hydration states of the ions have significant influence on the physicochemical properties of the solutions, the surface charge and wetting characteristics of the minerals, the collector adsorption states and, further, the flotation behavior of the soluble salts. In this regard, reviewing past research findings, efforts are made to establish a correlation between the ion hydration states with the flotation behavior of the soluble salts. Further, advances in understanding the significance of colloid adsorption involved in the soluble salt flotation process are addressed, and future research efforts to understand the soluble salt flotation chemistry are suggested.IntroductionSoluble salt minerals are essential raw materials for the production of a variety of commodities, fertilizers, potassium hydroxide, soda ash, magnesium compounds and other chemicals. These soluble mineral resources can be processed using flotation technology and, currently, more than 80% percent of the world’s potash is produced by the selective flotation of KCl crystals (sylvite) from other salt crystals, predominately NaCl (halite) and other more complex salts (Searls, 1990). Despite the successful application of flotation technology in the potash industry, the mechanisms for collector adsorption on soluble salts have not yet been fully understood and, therefore, have been of considerable interest to flotation researchers for many decades."

Refractory gold ores are those from which a significant percentage of the gold cannot be recovered by conventional cyanidation. Historically, roasting has been the primary method for rendering such ores amenable to gold extraction; however, roasting creates environmental problems that are not acceptable in many locations. During the 1980s, consistently strong gold prices drew increasing attention to refractory gold ores, and new processing schemes were commercialized, most prominently aqueous pressure oxidation and more recently bacterial oxidation. Since 1985, pressure oxidation has been incorporated into four plants processing refractory gold ores. A fifth plant is scheduled for start-up in early 1990, and three additional plants are scheduled for production before late 1992. A technical session on treatment of refractory ores was included in the program of `World Gold '89, a Gold Forum on Technology and Practices' held by SME and the AusIMM in Reno, NV, Nov. 5-8, 1989. This article summarizes material from five of the papers presented during the refractory gold session and published in the proceedings of `World Gold '89,' edited by Roshan Bhappu and Rod Harden. Two of the largest industries in northern Michigan, pulp and paper manufacturing and iron mining, formed a mutually beneficial partnership and collaborative research program to utilize paper mill residuals for waste rock stockpile reclamation. Historically, the majority of the paper industry’s residuals have been disposed of in landfills. The beneficial use of paper mill residuals for mine reclamation provides an environmentally sound recycling solution for the solids generated at northern Michigan paper mills and eliminates the need to strip additional overburden (glacial till) for final mine reclamation. Residuals offer a cost-effective source of organics and nutrients necessary for successful reclamation and waste rock stockpiles offer an economical and environmentally sound solution for disposal of residuals. The goal is to successfully pioneer technical development of paper mill residuals to accomplish vegetation of steep waste rock stockpile slopes and benches to establish a self-sustaining plant community that meets final reclamation requirements. Of the various types of iron mining wastes, rock stockpiles pose the greatest reclamation challenge. Success depends on incorporating sufficient organic matter into the rock stockpiles to produce a growth medium that can sustain vegetation without the need of overburden. This is an ongoing research program that is evolutionary in nature with numerous field trials, greenhouse studies, data collection and monitoring over multiple growing seasons. The program is a combination of innovative ideas and accepted reclamation practices that is proving to be a beneficial and economic approach to paper mill residual management and mine reclamation that will eventually lead from research to standardized reclamation procedures.
