Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available which allow direct in-situ analysis of adsorbed layers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IRJIRS) with reactive internal reflection elements allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in-situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar, 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Figure 1 is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/ dodecyl sulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate, and KCl/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990).

In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

In 1996, O&K Orenstein and Koppel Inc. announced big plans to increase its presence in the US mining market. Even though the company, a part of Ger- man-based O&K Mining GmbH, has been in the United States for about 100 years, it has lived in relative anonymity. That despite being one of the largest makers of hydraulic mining shovels and excavators in the world. The plan must be working. In the 14 months through December 1996,O&K increased its sales to surface mines and quarries in the United States by 250'70, according Rolf Weber, company president. "In the next five years, we anticipate total revenue from our US operations will grow from the current $50 million to $200 million," he said. "Toward that end, we have concentrated our efforts on the supply of reliable, high-output machinery and responsive service after the sale."

From Nov. 16-20, the Extraction 2025 Conference will be presented in Phoenix, AZ. The unique conference brings together the 12th International Copper Conference, the 6th International Symposium on Nickel and Cobalt as well as cross-cutting symposia. Extraction 2025 is co-organized by The Metallurgy and Materials Society (MetSoc) of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). The previous, and first Extraction meeting (Extraction 2018) was held jointly by these three societies seven years ago in Ottawa and was a huge success with more than 90 percent of respondents indicating interest in attending a future event. Kimberly Mills, senior process engineer at Samuel Engineering, is the lead for SME. “This installment of Extraction is featuring Copper 2025, Nickel-Cobalt 2025 as well as crosscutting symposia,” said Mills. “All three societies participate on the International Organizing Committee for the Copper Conference Series and are well situated to host this event together. TMS is also hosting the Ni-Co conference this year and agreed to include it as part of Extraction. There are many aspects that can be shared between these commodities to share information on processing technologies and to learn from each other.” SME is the overall conference chair and running the logistical aspects of the event, which includes managing all aspects of the venue and the registration system as well as tours and short courses, Mills said. “SME has many dedicated members serving in various capacities on organizing and programming committees, including Nick Gow serving as Technical Committee Co-Chair for Copper and Adam House assisting on the Copper IOC.” When Extraction 2025 kicks off, it will be focused on the metals needed for the global energy transition with a special focus on copper and nickel-cobalt. “With as rapidly as the industry is changing and the huge demands for these metals we have some serious challenges ahead of us,” Mills explained. “These challenges require collaboration, creative solutions and engaging experts, both inside and outside of our fields, with a push for sustainable sourcing, ethical supply chains, environmental and social responsibility.” The International Copper Conference was started in 1987 as a collaboration between the Institute of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCH) and MetSoc of the CIM. The event is typically held every four years and has always been held as a standalone or headlining event at a society annual meeting, said Mills. “Over the years, this conference series alone has brought together members of IIMCH, MetSoc, TMS, SME, the Society for Metallurgists and Miners from Germany (GDMB), the Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan (MMIJ), the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Nonferrous Metals Society of China (NFSOC),” she added. “Being a part of Extraction allows for even more sharing of ideas and expansion of networking. In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.

The accuracy of vibrating wire stress meters has been questioned by various users in the mining industry. During an in situ coal pillar study, a laboratory evaluation program was developed to determine whether stress meters could produce reliable measurements in coal. More than $0 stress meters were tested for accuracy, repeatability, effects of setting pressure, and the concept of using a single curve for interpreting the stress-meter data. The testing medium was lucite, a material with a modulus of elasticity very similar to coal. The evaluation demonstrated that the stress meters did provide repeatable measurements, but that accuracy was lacking when the recommended interpretation technique was used. Therefore, a new technique was developed that required all stress meters to be calibrated in the laboratory before use in the field. This new technique reduced the average error to typically less than 10% and, in the worst case, to below 15%.

The author has seen an increased use of shaft-mounted, right angle drive assemblies. These designs use the pulley shaft as its 'foundation" and can create significant overhung loads. To reliably perform, the pulley and shaft must be designed for these special requirements. This paper will focus on the development of overhung loads and their design effects. Special considerations to maximize performance will be presented and comparisons with other drive options will be made. Experience in heavy mining applications will be used throughout.

The rock mass parameters which need be evaluated to estimate the rippability of rock are briefly outlined and their significance is discussed. Several methods used for estimating rippability are compared, and the advantages of taking into account a wide spectrum of rock mass parameters are emphasized. A systematic means of numerically weighing six rock mass parameters to produce a Rippability Rating (RR) is recommended, and a method of correlating this rating with the refraction seismograph method and with tractor horsepower is shown. Although the overall method demonstrated is systematic and yields specific numerical results, an integrated approach is recommended to its application, taking into account: the Rippability Rating; seismic velocity and geologic material; and other engineering judgment factors.

In this paper, a semi-qualitative methodology is presented and then applied to an aluminium extrusion industrial facility in order to perform an initial environmental assessment. The results of the assessment enable an improved understanding of the environmental performance of the facility and more importantly identify the areas of significant environmental concern. Following, the application of case-specific sustainability indicators related with the areas of significant environmental concern, leads to a more comprehensive sustainability assessment. The applied two-step approach offers a quick and reliable environmental assessment and help focusing on the most environmentally problematic areas. Moreover, the follow-up of the specific indicators seems to be appropriate for the improvement of the environmental performance of the examined industrial facility.

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

The bacterial oxidation of arsenopyrite has been shown to be an efficient, economic and environmentally acceptable method for the liberation of any gold content . The mechanism of the process is not certain but is usually considered to involve direct and indirect reactions with respect to bacterial involvement. The direct reactions are those in which the bacteria attached to the mineral surface cause its dissolution, with dioxygen being the oxidant. The iron(III) produced in solution is the chemical oxidant in the so-called indirect reactions. Barrett et al 2 showed that a synthetic bio-oxidation solution (with no cells present) could dissolve up to 15% of an arsenopyrite sample, the products of the chemical oxidation being iron(II) and arsenic(III). This paper describes an extension of the investigation of the chemical process and its imp! ication for the mechanism of the bio-oxidation of arsenopyrite.

Geologic maps are indispensable tools in the modern search for mineral and fossil-fuel resources. They are the first essential step in understanding the lithologic nature and structure of rock units that form the land surface and that lie beneath it. They provide the basic foundation for planning mineral resource exploration programs and form the superstructure from which subsurface investigations are projected. In view of the economic application of such maps, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal Government entered a formal agreement in 1960 to map Kentucky geologically on a scale of 1:24, 000, or one inch map distance equals 2,000 feet on the ground. A 7. 5-minute quadrangle would comprise the unit map area. A resolution which urged the preparation of a new geological map of the entire State was passed by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers in February 1959, and was presented to the Governor of Kentucky, the Legislative Research Commission, Kentucky Department of Economic Development (now Department of Commerce), Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and Kentucky Geological Survey with a request for support and action. The request was subsequently endorsed and actively supported by numerous civic and professional societies as well as representatives of various facets of Kentucky government, commerce, and industry. Monies to initiate the program were appropriated by the next session of Kentucky legislature; this appropriation was matched by federal funds (Hagan, 1961). Kentucky's state-wide topographic mapping project was completed in 1956, just four years prior to starting the geologic mapping program. The recently completed modern 7. 5-minute, 1:24,000 topographic maps made ideal bases for plotting areal geology. Had they not been available, it is doubtful if a geo- logic mapping program so large and comprehensive could have been undertaken.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2006 draws upon avail-able information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2006 compiled by the USGS.

The Jualin Gold Prospect is centered on Johnson Creek, approximately 40 air miles north-west of Juneau, Alaska. The property is on the southern end of the Kakuhan Range with Berners Bay immediately to the south and Lynn Canal to the west. The property is accessible directly by helicopter from Juneau or by float plane to the head of a 5.5 mile gravel road that begins on the north side of Berners Bay and terminates at the old workings of the Jualin Mine near the center of the property.

Meldon Quarry is a seemingly rare occurrence of acid rock drainage (ARD) in a quarrying operation.4 With surface waters discharging to a tributary of a salmon-bearing river, it is subject to stringent discharge conditions. The quarry predates effective environmental management, and preventative, control and treatment measures were not implemented until relatively recently. However, retrospectively implementing standard preventative approaches at the site is costly, technically difficult and of uncertain benefit. This paper overviews the recent site history and introduces data from a demonstration by KEECO (UK) Limited of its Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) water treatment technology.

The "due diligence" means how carefully we do our homework before making the decision. The homework or feasibility study addresses different parts of the decision. In the industrial minerals business the study seeks to uncover the pros and cons in: o The mineral reserves, quantity, quality, mineability, access, etc. o The environmental impact of mining, processing and transporting. o The economics of operations. o Financial aspects o Legal aspects o Many other aspects o And -oh yes! the marketing aspects.

Corporate managers are facing increasingly demanding challenges as they seek to ensure compliance with environmental laws. Management also must deal with new liabilities created by environmental laws. These laws provide both private groups and governmental agencies with access to the courts to seek penalties, compliance orders, cleanups, or to forestall developments that could affect ecosystems. Environmental laws and liabilities are also affecting commercial transactions, including the availability of financing. Corporate managers must develop new and innovative methods to address these challenges in order to assure both sustainable industrial growth and stewardship of the environment.

Sluiceboxes which are designed and operated as recommended from our recent research can provide much higher concentration ratios than most other gravity concentrators (up to 50,000: 1) at very high overall placer gold recoveries (95-99%). They are also very reliable, inexpensive and simple to operate. A sluice­box is a rectangular flume containing riffles on matting, through which a dilute slurry of water and gravel flows. However, sluiceboxes operating under ideal conditions are actually cen­trifugal concentrators whose riffles overturn ribbons of slurry to form vortices. At the bottom of these vortices, centrifugal and gravitational forces combine to drive gold particles into matting (figure 1).

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has undertaken an under-ground transit project to extend public transportation service from downtown Boston to the South Boston Piers area. This new system, known as the Transit way, will connect existing subway lines to this area which is comprised of approximately 300 acres, in light of the potential for 21 million square feet of development by 2010. This system includes construction of a concrete immersed tube tunnel crossing of Fort Point Channel. The crossing will be accomplished in the highly congested setting of down-town Boston and will be located just to the north of the famous Boston Tea Party ship exhibit and amid major Central Artery Construction activity. The most recent concrete tube constructed in the United States was in 1962. The Fort Point Channel Crossing will employ current design and construction methods commonly utilized in the Netherlands, Australia, Hong Kong and elsewhere. This paper will present the design philosophy, planning, and evaluation of alternative crossing methods which led to the selection of the concrete immersed tube tunnel and construction techniques envisioned for this particular application.
