A mining machine has been designed and fabricated to mine coal from room and pillar operations combining high pressure waterjet cutting and mechanical fragmentation. Waterjets are used to slot the coal face with an advancing plow wedge then breaking out larger coal pieces. The machine has the following advantages: - simply built around a disassembled longwall chock and gathering arm loader apron; - few moving parts which are simply and inexpensively maintained; provides immediate roof support in the face working area; - coal produced is larger, with resulting lower preparation cost; - no dust is generated; - risk of spark generation is virtually eliminated.

The example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that ,remain in fixing the classification of a given uranium resource include the uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving the differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

The European climate and energy framework for 2030 is highlighting the reduction of man-made CO2 by increasing the use of renewable energy. In this spirit, Germany has decided to erase coal use as an energy source by 2038 completely. This strategy premises a feasible, responsible and sustainable post-mining management. The Research Institute for Post-Mining (FZN) at the TH Georg Agricola University in Bochum, Germany, has developed a holistic approach to meet post-mining challenges. In all efforts, the FZN aims to achieve the fundamental goals of the United Nations to deal with the resources of our planet responsibly and sustainably.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an attractive area of research in such fields as CO2 mineral carbonation, global warming and sustainable energy systems. In this study, carbonation efficiency for aqueous mineral carbonation (MC) was achieved through two steps,which include leaching of calciumfrom cement kiln dust (CKD) followed by the reaction of pure CO2 with the calcium hydroxide precipitates formed by the hydroxylation using NaOH. Response surface methodology (RSM) with a Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to optimize the calciumleaching yield,while the carbonation efficiency from CKD was assessed using RSMwith central composite design (CCD). Optimization of calcium leaching is highly important, as it is a rate-limiting reaction step in MC and also influences and enhances carbonation efficiency. Different parameters including acid concentration (HNO3), leaching temperature, leaching time, and dose of CKD sample were considered in order to optimize the maximum yield of Ca leaching from the CKD sample. In addition, different CO2 flow rates and temperatures were used as parameters for optimizing carbonation efficiency. Two quadratic regression models were developed for each process, i.e. calciumleaching and carbonation. For calcium leaching, a maximum of 98.55% calcium was extracted under the optimal set of acid concentration 4.13 M, 90 °C, 28 min leaching time, and 13.8 g of CKD sample. For carbonation, the maximum carbonation efficiency of 89.2% was achieved for a CO2 flow rate of 1163 cm3/min at 90 °C. Calcium leaching results indicate that the leaching yield was significantly affected by all the input parameters except leaching time. For carbonation, both factors affected the carbonation efficiency, with the effect temperature shown to be greater than that of the CO2 flow rate. Additionally, the predicted results agreed well with the experimental values for both calcium leaching and carbonation processes, with errors of less than 1% and 5%, respectively.

The semi-autogenous grinding circuit at the Utah Mines Limited, Island Copper Operation, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is described. Since start-up of the operation in 1971 grinding circuit throughput has been progressively increased from the initial design rate of 30,000 to the current average 45,000 tonnes per day (t/d) of porphyry copper ore. Key developments and modifications in operating and maintenance practice that have contributed to this increase are reviewed.

The Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota is one of the few remaining gold properties still in operation, in this country. The mine is relatively deep, with a bottom production level of 4250 feet, and a bottom development of 6200 feet. 4, 800 tons of ore are produced daily from three rather large, but inconsistent ore bodies; the dip of which is easterly at about 72 degrees, and the plunge to the south is about 30 degrees. The ore is, for the most part, a chlorite schist with large veins of secondary quartz and cummingtonite schist The ore is not continuous in any direction, but is localized at the ridges of the very intricate system of anti clinal folds. This property has been in active production since its establishment in 1876, except for a period during World War II. The incentive, or contract pay system, has been a gradual process that has been developed by the trial-and-error method down through the years. In looking over the old records, hand-shoveling was paid on an incentive basis as far back as 1916. Since this time, the contract system has grown until it now includes almost all types of underground work - except haulage and maintenance work

"Low-grade iron ores are finely ground and processed to recover iron-bearing minerals. However, the iron-rich powder is too fine to be used directly in blast furnaces and most direct reduction furnaces, and must be agglomerated or pelletized into a usable product called “pellets.” Bentonite clay has traditionally been used as a binder to make iron ore concentrate pellets, but it is expensive and contaminates the pellets. Organic binders may be a viable alternative to bentonite clay. This manuscript reviews organic materials that have been used to make iron ore concentrate pellets. Included are discussions on the development of organic binders, common pros and cons to organic binder use, organic binder structure and its effects on agglomeration, and additives to organic binders.IntroductionIron ore agglomeration turns finely disseminated, low-grade iron ores into a usable product, called pellets. During pellet production, fine-grained, iron-rich minerals are liberated from low-grade ores, concentrated, and agglomerated into round balls that are thermally hardened or cold-bonded to form pellets. Pellets are then transported to blast furnaces or direct reduction operations where they are used to produce iron; iron is further refined and shaped into the wide variety of steel-based industrial and consumer products in use today.Over the years, pellet production has become increasingly more prevalent with the increased exploitation of low-grade iron ores and increased iron and steel consumption around the world. In 2010, world iron ore pellet production was 388 Mt. It could be argued that the current pellet production process has been enabled by the use of binders – practical experience has shown that it would be nearly impossible to agglomerate iron ore concentrates using rotary drums and discs without using a binder."

Vibrating screens and crushers are the workhorses of material sizing. Unfortunately their natural frequency is often in the range of typical supporting structures, thereby making installations prone to vibration problems. Much of the available literature regarding the support of vibrating screens is fairly confusing and outdated. This paper presents the results of utilizing accelerometers and finite element software in the analysis and design of supports for vibrating equipment. It contains data from field studies of vibrating screen and crusher installations, design of new and repair of existing supporting structures, and the correlation between field data and finite element time history analyses. Finally, the paper summarizes a method for analyzing and designing structures subjected to vibratory loads and predicting their behavior.

It all started with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, which establishes that Congress is committed to restore and maintain environ- mental quality. It directs all federal agencies to identify and develop methods and procedures so that environmental parameters and values will be given equal consideration in the decision-making process, along with economic and technical parameters. Section 102 of the Act directs, among other things, that all agencies will submit a detailed statement on: (1) the environmental impact of the proposed action, (2) any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented, (3) alternatives to the proposed action, (4) the relationship between local short term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long term productivity, (5) any irreversible and irretrievable committments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented. Passage of this act has been followed by other legislation, both federal and state. The Water Quality Act of 1970 puts teeth into the previously existing Federal Water Pollution Control Act by requiring a "certificate of reasonable assurance that the activity licensed will not violate the applicable water quality standards." The Clean Air Act of 1970 requires that the Environ- mental Protection Agency establish national air quality standards, as well as standards for significant new pollution sources.

One of the major ignition sources of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines is flame cutting and welding. On May 20, 2006, a flame-cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On Jan. 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame-cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that required sealing the mine for an extended period. On March 19, 1992, an explosion initiated by welding at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine resulted in four fatalities. These examples of mine incidents demonstrate the need to conduct research to develop best practices for safely conducting flame cutting and welding in underground coal mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame-cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of incidents. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame-cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations. In addition, MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The findings were used to identify and compare differences between flame-cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, eastern and western mines, low-seam and high-seam mines, room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices were developed to reduce the number of ?res and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this research.

The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

Developing a method to accurately determine the weight and distribution of the load within a shuttle car bed eliminates the need for manual activation of the flight chain. Accordingly, this experimental study characterized the thermo-mechanical response of two unique load cells in force shunt, implemented as an engineering control to quantify load position and distribution without human intervention. The influence of environmental and installation conditions on the measurement accuracy was quantified and determined to be indirectly dependent on the characteristics of the material load cells that are mounted to.

It was not many years ago that people would have argued that a coal session did not belong at an International Mining Convention. Historically, steam coal has always been used domestically due to its natural geographic diversity and high transportation expense. Times have changed. With the help of Opec, steam coal has gone international. As opposed to metallurgical coal, whose trade routes have a long history, whose supply sources are more limited and whose market growth is seen by most to be relatively flat, steam coal export forecasts are calling for more than a doubling by 1990 and a quadrupling by the year 2000. Suddenly, one must be familiar with coal mining on a global basis in order to predict which regions will be able to fill these markets.

"INTRODUCTION In designing a new pneumatic Dust Sampling Device (DSD) for coal mines, it was essential to analyze the air and particle flow inside the device in detail using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. Several CFD models were developed to simulate the air and dust flow and sample collecting process of the DSD. These CFD models were developed to assist in the design of the DSD instrument prototypes for laboratory testing. Nozzle and injection parameters such as geometry, air velocity and pressure, were varied across a wide range to obtain the optimal settings to accurately simulate the fluid dynamics of the multi-phase flow within the DSD. Accordingly, these parameters were used as a guide for the design of the DSD and to verify the dust scouring dynamics, which is designed to represent the dust entrainment during an actual methane or coal dust explosion. BACKGROUND The 2010 explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine has demonstrated the destructive violence of a coal dust explosion. A major contributing factor for this disaster was that the mine operators did not have a reliable, direct-reading method to collect mine dust and determine inert content and combustibility. This led to the development of a new prototype handheld, pneumatic mine dust sampling device (DSD), which blows a puff of air and entrains the mine dust by mimicking the entrainment process during a mine explosion. A computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is used to analyze the air and dust flow inside the DSD. The objective of the CFD modeling effort is to find the optimum design of the DSD prototype, nozzle orientation, air pressure and pulse length by analyzing and varying these parameters so that the scouring action collects a valid, representative and repeatable mine dust sample. CFD MODEL DESIGN Figure 1 shows a wireframe image of the DSD which is utilized in the setup of the CFD model. The DSD has a triangular cross section and is 10 cm wide. Two nozzles with cross-sectional dimension of 2.8 cm by 0.25 cm act as inlets at the narrow end of the triangular cross section. The CFD model includes a reference plane 6 cm away from the nozzle to measure the quantity of dust collected. The geometry shown in Figure 1 was created for the model and it matches with the design of the actual device shown in the figure 2. Symmetry, along the plane X-Y through the center of the device, is used to reduce the number of computational cells in the CFD model. Figure 2 shows the prototype device used for experimental testing. CFD MODEL SETUP Figure 3 shows a hexahedral mesh with a cell size of 0.8 mm and the total number of cells is around 650,000. The ANSYS Fluent® pressure based solver with a transient case was used with a total duration of 40 ms. The 40 ms simulation time is based on experimental measurements to capture the injection of air and initial scouring of dust."

The reliability of large diameter, high horsepower ball mill is paramount when large production and minimum downtime is required. The 17 ft. x 56 ft. double compartment ball mill at St. Lawrence Cement Company has the first gearless drive built in North America and has the world's largest hydrodynamic bearings currently built and running. The machine has seen three years operation and has met its specifications. The mill was designed by Aerofall Mills Limited and the gearless drive built and designed by the Canadian General Electric Company. This paper discusses the operation of the first North American installation of a gearless drive ball mill from the mechanical, electrical and process aspects.

Newmont Mining Corp. has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for more than 45 years. Naturally, the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably during this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main orebody that is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin, NV. The property was developed as a one-mine, one-gold mill treatment plant operation, which produced about 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz/year) of doré gold bars. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a doré bar for sale.

This is the seventh annual tabulation of royalty information. It is also the first year in which some data have been deleted to make room for new data. The concept of royalties evolved from a time when the government owned all of the land, including mines, to the situation where free miners won the right to claim minerals but paid a portion of their production to the royal treasury. Today, a mineral royalty is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights for the privilege of producing the mineral commodity. However, some people incorrectly believe that the selling price and the royalty are the same thing. The contract between the owner (lessor) and the mining company (lessee) is the mineral lease. Some clauses that are common to mineral leases include: identification of property, granting clause, reservations, definitions, royalty rate, taxes and title, indemnity, termination, inspection, assignability, successors, and reclamation. There often are variations in royalty rates for a given commodity that reflect differences in location, quality, market conditions or public versus private ownership. History In the time of ancient Rome, the government owned the mining properties by virtue of conquest. It would lease the mines to favored citizens who would pay rent to the State. Various conditions of sovereign ownership of both land and mineral rights continued in Europe until the Renaissance. As the laws evolved for land ownership by private citizens, the concept that minerals belonged to the State (King, Crown, sovereign) continued until about the 15th century. Free miners challenged the notion of sovereign ownership and won the right to discover and claim minerals. But a portion of their production had to be paid to the sovereign - a royalty. So, the original concept of a mineral royalty was a tax on production that was due to the Crown or Church. The term mineral royalty, as it is known today, is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights (formerly the royal owner) for the privilege of mining and producing the mineral commodity. The owner of the mineral rights, the lessor, and the mine operator, the lessee, enter into an agreement to mine the property. The agreement is the lease. While this concept is common, there are some who do not understand that the royalty is a portion of production paid to the owner as agreed on in the lease document. This author has seen reports where the selling price of a commodity has been quoted as the royalty. ("They get 70 cents a ton royalty at their pit and the guy down the road only has a 65 cent royalty.") These reports have been authored by people not familiar with the mining industry. Lease clauses In addition to the amount to be paid the lessor, there are several other items to be addressed in the lease agreement. The following list may not be all inclusive, but briefly describes most of the common clauses any good mining lease should contain. Identification: This opening clause names the owner (lessor) and the operator (lessee), the address of each, and gives the legal description of the property. Granting clause: This part of the lease gives the time period or duration of the agreement and information about renewal periods. It also has language about the exclusive right of the lessee to mine the property. Reservations: If the owner wants to exclude any portion of the property or set some specific conditions about the operation, there needs to be a clause that describes these reservations. Definitions: This section should address some of the technical terms that the lessor may find confusing - short tons versus cubic yards, dollars versus percentage of average selling price, any escalator indices such as consumer price index or producer price index, and material mined versus material sold. Royalty: This section spells out what the royalty rate will be, how often it will be paid, if there is an annual minimum, the pay dates, and how the records will be kept. This section also describes the conditions under which the lessee is exempt from the annual minimum - natural disasters, strikes, governmental actions, or other causes referred to as force majeure. Taxes and title: The lease needs to identify who is responsible for the property taxes, severance taxes (if applicable), and other taxes that relate to the mining activity - taxes on equipment, improvements, or stockpiles. This is a good place in the lease for the owner to certify his ownership of the property and its mineral rights and also certify that no other leases are in effect. The lessees may want language that allows them to pay mortgages or other debts on the property to keep their lease in effect. Indemnity: This portion of the lease identifies that the lessee assumes the risks for lessee's mining operation. Lessor should expect indemnification by the lessee through standard insur¬ance policies - workers compensation, liability and property damage. Termination: Both the lessor and lessee want language that will allow them to terminate the lease. Premature failure of armoured face conveyor (AFC) chains due to corrosion is a significant proportion of the unplanned downtime experienced on longwall equipment. The AFC chains are constantly in contact with water and wet coal. The premature failure issue of AFC chains has become more prominent since the introduction of longwall top-coal caving with its additional AFC. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a popular water treatment method for reducing salinity and dissolved solids, but its impact on the corrosion of the AFC chains is unclear. This study has been commissioned to investigate the direct effects of RO water on the corrosion of AFC chains. An immersion test was carried out using AFC chain steel submerged in two water samples: untreated dam water and treated water from an RO treatment plant. Elemental analysis was conducted for both water samples, and four corrosion indices were measured for both water samples. The RO water more vigorously dissolves calcium carbonate scales leading to increased corrosion of the AFC chains although the dam water has much higher levels of calcium, chloride, sulphate, sodium, and magnesium. Bicarbonate ions are the main alkaline factor of water that provides the buffering capacity to acids. Decreased alkalinity without balancing other ions in water causes high corrosivity and decreased scaling tendencies.

Nickel ores may be classified into two major categories : sulphide ores, and oxidized lateritic ores, these latter containing nearly 80% of the known reserves of the metal (1). Two types of lateritic ores are recognized; ores high in iron but low in magnesia and silica are known as "limonitic", while ores low in iron but containing high percentages of magnesia and silica are called "silicate" (see Table I). Sulphide ores can be beneficiated readily by conventional ore dressing techniques and the technology for nickel recovery from such ores has been well tested in a number of commercial processes (1-4). Unfortunately, no economically viable process for the concentration of nickel from low-grade deposits has yet been developed, and so only the high grade ores are able to be worked profitably. Silicate ores have been treated pyrometallurgically for the production of ferronickel (2) (3) (5); limonitic ores have been processed hydrometallurgically to produce nickel metal (2) (3) (6) (7).
