With mine activity dating back to 1792, the Lehigh Valley, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the historic Allentown/Bethlehem steel mills and about 160 km (100 miles) northeast of Philadelphia, PA, defined early-day coal mining. Coal mining began just nine years after the end of America?s Revolutionary War. The high-carbon, clean-burning anthracite coal that was hand-dug from the Pennsylvania hills fueled the steam engines that powered the Industrial Revolution, helping build early steam ships and even the first automobiles. Around 1910, at the peak of the U.S.?s early mining effort, there were more than 250,000 men working underground ? 10,000 of them in the Lehigh Valley.

Over the past decade, the coal mining industry has faced the difficult task of remaining profitable in the midst of declining market prices. Historically, the industry has been quite capable of meeting this challenge by various means. As total costs to mine and market coal continue to increase, new methods of tackling the problem must be implemented. Studies have shown that although many options exist to influence both inby and outby costs, the greatest potential remains in addressing costs at the coal face. Mining operations can positively effect a change in their profitability by either reducing costs, or by increasing production to in turn lower their net cost per man-hour. Original equipment manufacturers can play a key role in both options through the introduction of new technology that permits higher extraction rates, as well as other advantages leading to lower cost coal. A leading advancement over the past 30 – 40 year period has been the advent of progressively higher voltages to operate the mining equipment. This advance enables higher power transmission for a given cable size, operation at lower amperages resulting in less voltage fluctuation, and reduced heat on the cable and electrical components.

Florida phosphates ore typically processed by reverse flotation with an intermediate acid-scrubbing step. A single-reagent flotation process, using fatty acids or amines as the collector, would eliminate the intermediate scrubbing step plus an additional flotation step. This would not only simplify the process flowsheet but would also result in reduced reagent costs. The potential of single-reagent flotation of Florida phosphates using fatty acids as the collector is examined in this study. Introduction The beneficiation scheme now used for Florida phosphates involves the following three steps (Smith, 1976: Lawyer et al.. 1978, 1984: Moudgil et al, 1976, 1979, 1986, 1987): •rougher flotation of fluorapatitc particles using a fatty acid-fuel oil mixture as the collector. •scrubbing of fatty acid, and •cleaner flotation of silica particles using amine collector. Several attempts have been made to simplify the process flowsheet by floating either apatite or silica (not both, as is the current practice). However, single-reagent flotation schemes have had limitations in meting the concentrate-grade requirements of the phosphoric acid plants. In this study, an attempt was made to use a minimal amount of the fatty acid-fuel oil collector to obtain an acceptable grade (rougher) concentrate. Invariably, the recovery in such cases is expected to be lower than in the conventional rougher-flotation step. Therefore, scavenger flotation of tailings with additional fatty-acid collector was conducted to improve the phosphate recoveries.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an equation which describes the dewatering of clay slurries with polyethylene oxide. This dewatering equation is An _ kC + b where n, k. and b are empirical constants and C is the concentration of polymer solution used for dewatering. The minimum amount of polymer required for dewatering. A is determined by titration of the clay slurry with a polymer solution. In this report, the dewatering equation is applied to data obtained for a polyacrylamide dewatering sequence. Fundamental similarities between the dewatering properties of clays and the viscosity of polymer solutions were observed. These similarities were explained by correlating an equation describing polymer configuration in solution with the dewatering equation. This correlation showed that amount of polymer required for dewatering and polymer solution viscosity are both consequences of the frictional interaction of entangled polymer coils.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

"INTRODUCTION Newmont’s Twin Creeks operation, part of its Nevada operations, produces gold from two large open pit mines. Mined ore is processed at one of three on-site facilities: a refractory mill with two autoclaves, an oxide mill and heap leaching facilities. Twin Creeks also processes various off-site sourced concentrates and ore including high grade underground ore from the Turquoise Ridge joint venture with Barrick Gold Corporation. This paper discusses Twin Creeks’ strategic mine planning process which is part of an in-depth continuous improvement program called “Full Potential.” The process involves cost analysis, phase design validations, life-of-mine production scheduling optimization, mill blending strategy and stockpile management. Through this Full Potential strategic planning, Twin Creeks is creating significant value by increasing near term free cash flow and life of mine net present value (“NPV”) and achieving cost reductions. TWIN CREEKS OPERATION Twin Creeks is one of the major gold producers in Newmont’s Nevada operations (see Figure 1, 2 and 3). Located approximately 15 miles north of Golconda, Twin Creeks produced approximately 28 % of the Nevada operation’s 2013 gold production of 1.8 million ounces (Newmont 2014). The production included Turquoise Ridge sourced gold ore from the joint venture (75% Barrick Gold Corporation, 25% Newmont).At Twin Creeks, there are two large open pits, named Mega Pit and Vista Pit (see Figure 4, 5 and 6). There are 3 to 5 phases in Mega Pit and 2 to 5 phases in Vista Pit depending on the gold price assumption. There is also an underground exploration project at the bottom of the Vista Pit. Twin Creeks produces gold from a variety of ore types requiring different processing techniques depending on economic and metallurgical characteristics. To ensure the best use of processing assets, engineering and processing groups at Twin Creeks utilize a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (“MILP”) model to guide the flow of mine sequences and material routing to various process facilities (Kawahata, Schumacher and Hufford 2013)."

The phosphate rock review did not arrive in time for publication in the. June issue. The world phosphate industry continued its slide in 1992 from the already depressed levels in 1991. The industry is locked into a 30-year fertilizer price low due to the worldwide fertilizer glut. Domestic production and imported, marketable phosphate rock decreased 1%, while domestic consumption increased by 1 % last year. The US Bureau of Mines reported a decrease in the domestic phosphate rock value from $25.42/t in 1991 to $23/t in 1992 ($23.06/st to $20.80/st). The diammonion phosphate (DAP) product price also dropped in value from $138/ t in January 1992 to $11 0/t in December ($125/st to $99.70/st). Continued declines in DAP prices is forcing the US fertilizer industry to develop cost-saving programs and reorganizations. Layoffs in 1992 resulted in a 7.6% decrease in the Florida phosphate workforce. Since 1980, the Florida workforce has declined by 35%. Small phosphate companies were forced to close operations or were sold to larger phosphate companies. Federal and state environmental regulations for byproduct waste disposal methods are being studied. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved phosphogypsum use in agri¬cultural and research applications as long as the radium 226 concentration is lower than 10 pci/g. The EPA is also reviewing regulations concerning air emissions at fertilizer plants. Industry publications reported the possibility of continued company sales and mergers in 1993. Industry expectations are optimistic while waiting for an upturn in the market. The US phosphate industry consolidation into three or four major companies should evolve into a stronger world market force.

The North Singhbhum Mobile Belt (NSMB) lies between two crustal-scale shear zones, the South Purulia Shear Zone (SPSZ) at the north, and the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) at the south. The Babaikundi-Birgaon Axis (BBA) is an east-west trending secondary shear zone in the NSMB lying south of SPSZ, which is known for the occurrence of gold along with other sulfide minerals within the quartz reefs. The present study has been carried out at north of Ichadih village, which lies on the BBA. The present study attempts combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential methods along a profile of 470-m length in the Ichadih area to map the potential mineralized zones. Initially, ERT sections generated by Wenner, Wenner- Schlumberger, dipole-dipole, and joint inversion of the combined array have been analyzed, and results are validated through the analysis of model resolution. A prominent low resistivity (10–100 Ωm) associated with quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef at a depth of approximately 30–85 m, encircled by a high resistive (more than 10,000 Ωm) formation associated with metasedimentary rock, has been delineated using joint inversion of the combined array. Further, analysis of self-potential (SP) anomaly using particle swarm optimization inversion also confirms the prominent low SP anomaly at a depth of 77.3 m, which is analogous to the low resistivity anomaly identified in the joint inversion of the combined geo-electric array. Subsequent analysis of a complex synthetic geo-electrical model analogous to the present field situation proves the efficacy of the joint inversion of combined arrays. As a whole, joint inversion of multi-array data is established as an efficient technique for better subsurface imaging in case of the complex subsurface structure. In-depth analyses confirm the possibility of sulfide mineral-rich deposit (quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef) which requires further geological drilling and lithogeochemical sample analysis, for possible future exploration.

Explanations of commodity price levels, or movements, commonly focus on the supply and demand fundamentals of the particular commodity, or else are assigned to speculative activity. Comparisons of metal price histories with monetary and other economic data support the argument that the supply of and demand for money are no less important in price determination than are the supply and demand of the commodity itself. That these relationships should exist is evident in the price identity and are consistent with monetary theory. The patterns developed have limited usefulness as predictors, but their recognition is essential for the construction of price scenarios for planning purposes.

Flotation circuits in the metalliferous industry recover high value concentrates from very fine (minus 0.lmm), low grade, slow-floating feeds. Flotation columns acting as final cleaners within these circuits offer the benefits of higher grade concentrates, reduced circuit complexity, improved control and reduced power consumption. By contrast, in the coal industry, these benefits have not been realised, principally because columns are not well suited to the treatment of conventional coal flotation feeds (minus 0.5m). However, this does not imply that columns do not have a place within the coal industry, rather that they must be applied in a role where all the unique advantages of column flotation can be of benefit. The development of a commercial scale column to recover discarded ultrafines from the Riverside preparation plant of BHP-Utah Coal Limited is discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the column design features pertinent to the recovery of ultrafine coal. Pilot and commercial scale column performances are compared. The results of the commercial scale testwork indicate that a full installation at the 5.5 MTPA Riverside plant would annually recover additional coal worth $US 6.6M.

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. The development of the mineral industry of Jamaica has been guided by an unwritten policy which has nevertheless been reflected in various pieces of mining legislation and by case-by-case approvals of incentive packages for non-bauxite minerals. An effort has now been made to bring together in one minerals policy document, all the policy elements that have guided our laws and actions thus far and to upgrade the final version to meet the challenges of the next century. In this regard, industrial minerals will be placed on a more equal footing with bauxite, especially in terms of investment incentives.

The properties of activated carbon which are important for gold recovery applications include activity, capacity, wear resistance, particle size distribution and bulk density. There are experimental difficulties in attempting to simulate the plant environment in the laboratory in order to measure the above properties. However, standard tests can be set up to compare the characteristics of different carbons and to assist in monitoring the performance of carbon in CIP operations. These laboratory tests are critically evaluated and data are presented on the performance of carbon from a number of CIP plants.

With the development of the coal mine regulation regime, the situation of coal mine safety production in China has continued to improve. However, coal mine accidents have not been fundamentally eliminated; constantly learning from historical accidents can make mining work safer. Therefore, to better understand the coal mine accident characteristics, this study analyzes the tendency of coal mine safety accidents from multiple perspectives, among which all accidents after the establishment of the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety in 1999 are the top priority. The results show that strict national policy, technological progress, and reasonable coal prices are conducive to the safe development of mines. On the contrary, high-intensity centralized production will lead to frequent accidents in the peak season of coal production. In addition, the type of coal mine ownership will have an indirect impact on the occurrence of coal mine accidents. The research results not only play a positive role in the prevention and control of coal mine accidents in China but also have reference meanings for the safety production of coal mines in other countries in the world.

Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

Compacted clays are used as permeability barriers in many mineral engineering projects such as heap leaching, containment ponds, tailings disposal and earth dams. Source materials used for clay liners include a wide variety of sand, silt and clay admixtures that exhibit dramatically different engineering properties when densified. The permeability and plastic properties of fine-grained soils are reviewed with respect to the state of compaction as the water content varies. Be-cause they are weak in tension, compacted clays are susceptible to cracking when subjected to differential flexural movements. Designs of compacted clay liners must include an evaluation of their flexibility which is the ability of a fine-grain soil to bend plastically without cracking. This paper will also discuss the importance of flexibility with respect to soil types, compaction effort, failure mechanism and testing evaluation to the performance of clay liners in preventing seepage of pollutants from a containment site.

In three recent publications, Klimpel et al (1988) and Klimpel and Hansen (1988, 89), the theory and invention process behind the identification of two new classes of sulfide mineral collectors were summarized. These two new families can be represented by the 111 generalized formulate: R1-S-R1 -NRI III (denoted as the F-series chelation family) and R-S-R or R -CHSCH-R (denoted as the S-series redox family). The influence of systematic changes in the various R groupings on laboratory batch flotation cell tests has been covered in the above references and will not be repeated in this paper. In particular, the recent article by Klimpel and Hansen (1989) should be studied as a research introduction to this paper.

CRYSTALLIZATION from aqueous solution is a simple and old method for the recovery of metal values from leach solution. Practically all the methods for the recovery of aluminum from clay are based on the crystallization of an aluminum salt from the leach solution. Differences in solubilities may be used to advantage for separating two metals from the same leach solution. The classical method of Marignac (1866), which makes use of the difference in solubilities of K2TaF7 and K2NbOF5 to separate niobium from tantalum, has been used successfully in the manufacture of these metals (Fig. 10-1). The slurry containing the metal oxides is dissolved in 70 % hydrofluoric acid, diluted, and heated near boiling. A potassium salt is added in sufficient quantity to form the complex fluorides of the niobium and tantalum present. The solution is filtered and allowed to cool. At room temperature most of the tantalum salt crystallizes out while the niobium remains in solution.
