What a difference a year makes. One year ago, the iron mining industry and the steelmaking industry in the United States were in trouble. Many companies were in bankruptcy, and talk of plant and mine shutdowns was rampant. At that time, it seemed difficult, if not impossible, to remain competitive with imported steel. In addition, the World Trade Organization declared as illegal the tariffs placed on imported steel. And many questioned the viability of the ironmining and steel industry in the United States. At that time, global economic conditions were the main contributors to the industry’s problems. However, since last year’s meeting, changes in global economics have actually helped the steel industry in the United States. Heavy global demand for steel has caused raw-material shortages worldwide. Much of the increased demand is a result of the economic boom in China. In addition, because of a weak U.S. dollar and higher international freight rates, steel imports into the United States have been reduced to about 50 percent of recent levels. These factors have contributed to a rebirth of the U.S. iron mining and steel industries.

Introduction As ore grades decline and deposit depths increase, problems and costs of mining construction increase rapidly. Ground water greatly impacts the cost of mining construction. In developing or exploiting ore bodies or coal mines, stored ground water in waterbearing formations is often encountered. Man-made conduits or shafts are constructed, as are raise bores for ventilation (up to 6-m-diam or 20-ft-diam), or smaller diameter drill holes, used for either power cables or rock dust. In underground construction and mining, it is possible to inherit unmapped and abandoned drill holes either from oil or gas exploration, or from previous geological investigations. There also exists within underground work exposure to faults, fissures, and jointing. A mine development may encounter unknown aquifers or, unluckily, have an ore body that is an aquifer. Water may invade an existing underground structure, due to concrete deterioration or to damage that may occur to an existing shaft or tunnel concrete lining. An underground development may intersect a drill hole that was not properly grouted when abandoned. It subsequently formed a conduit or an active path to conduct water into the mine. Water inflow may range from insignificant to a magnitude sufficient to inundate an area or an entire underground development. Corrosion imposes major costs. In shafts, it can cause accelerated wear and deterioration, and subsequent early replacement of hoisting ropes. It can also cause deterioration, misalignment, and subsequent accelerated wear and replacement of timber and steel guides and buntons. Utility maintenance (power cables, air, water, and ventilation lines) also can become a problem. Corrosion imposes major costs. Skips and skiploaders provide a never-ending series of maintenance headaches when exposed to an ingress of water. Numerous problems are found in declines with invert and rail maintenance and with partitions in over-under coal mine slopes. Ground water interacting with an underground ventilation system can result in: • Increased ventilation resistance due to roof falls and the spalling of ribs caused by ice heaving. • Restriction in shaft or slope cross-sectional area due to ice buildup during winter months. This may be a safety hazard to access as well. • An increase in the moisture content entering the ventilation air that condenses underground and causes electrical and equipment maintenance problems. Underground structures also incur water-caused problems. The concrete lining in shafts, slopes, and tunnels may be subject to: • Active mine waters causing concrete and reinforcing steel to deteriorate - perhaps to the point of collapse. • Load redistribution around a concrete lining, caused by soil dislocation due to water movement. The resulting stress may be in excess of the calculated design loading. Backwall injection with grout of the completed concrete lining may solve these water inflow problems through low-pressure injections of cement and chemicals. This fills voids at the interface of the concrete lining with either the soil or rock excavation. Surface structures may be jeopardized by lowering the ground water table, resulting in surface settlements. Surface settlements can occur in buildings, headframes, hoist foundations, mills, conveyor structures, or in rail haulage. Areas of differential settlement can lead to derailments, improper wear of hoisting ropes on sheaves in headframes, and the misalignment of bearings and brakes. Mud jacking and compaction grouting may remedy these problems. To reduce operating costs, increase efficiency, and increase safety, inflow water to the mine should be minimized. For an operating mine with a water problem, a water inflow survey should be taken. Quantities of water flow should be examined at all accesses (shafts, slopes, bore holes, and raise bores) at the faces, haulages (rails or conveyors), and sump discharge. It has been reported in the literature that there is a substantial economic incentive for removing sulfur from coal. Therefore, U. s. Steel initiated an investigation to determine the feasibility of lowering the sulfur content of its Pittsburgh-seam coal. Preliminary crushing and washability studies on a representa-tive sample indicated that substantial sulfur reductions could be attained. Figure 1 shows the effect of the top size of a given coal sample on the sulfur content of the float-l.45 specific-gravity fraction of coal. At a top size of 3 inches, the raw-coal sulfur content of 2.32 percent was reduced to 1.64 percent. Crushing to a top size of 20 mesh reduced the raw-coal sulfur to 1.25 percent. Below a top size of one inch, the sulfur content decreased rapidly as top size was decreased. Figure 2 shows the effect of specific gravity of separation on pyritic sulfur. Normally this coal has an organic-sulfur content of approximately 1 percent. As expected, pyritic sulfur was reduced as the separating gravity was lowered for all the various size fractions shown. The rate of decrease in pyritic sulfur was gradual above 1.45 specific gravity, but great below 1.45. Greater sulfur reductions were attained on the coarser sizes with decreasing

The Mineral Hill Mine, owned and operated by TVX Gold Inc., is located in the Beartooth Mountains, 5 miles north of Gardiner Montana, U.S.A., which is the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Mining is carried out underground using ramp attack cut and fill as well as room and pillar mining. The mine currently employs approximately 145 people and is producing 550 tons per day at a grade of around .21 oz/ton.

Collaboration between education providers is the key to long-term sustainability and improved quality in mining education. The mining industry is now, more than ever, an industry doing business on a global basis. Staff are recruited by global mining companies in many different countries and can find themselves deployed anywhere in the world. The mining engineer of tomorrow must be willing to take on this international challenge, and must be educated to a level where he or she has a comprehensive grounding in technical aspects of mining engineering, but also a well-founded appreciation of management, social, environmental and cultural issues that may be encountered around the world. In order to deliver such an education, academic providers must collaborate at both a national and international level. This paper provides an overview of progress that has been made in Australia through the national joint venture ? Min¬ing Education Australia (MEA). Supported by the mining industry in Australia, through the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), MEA has been operational since 2007 and is seeing the development of a range of innovative courses and delivery methods, together with a high level of staff cooperation across the country. MEA has also commenced some international teaching initiatives that are seen as a catalyst for a far greater degree of international collaboration in the future. Such activity is not only to the benefit of the students who are taught by experts from around the world, but it also ensures that individual univer¬sity programs remain viable in terms of staffing numbers and financial performance. The paper also presents some statistics on recent upward trends in mining engineering student numbers from around the world, in response to the global shortage of mining engineers.

An economic, real-time probe drill monitoring system was developed for Metropolitan Water District’s Arrowhead Tunnels project to quantitatively evaluate ground conditions ahead of a TBM. This system digitally records hydraulic feed, rotation, and percussion pressures and calculates drill advance rates during drilling. These data are computer synthesized to develop a digital representation of the ground ahead, and the resulting “picture” of the ground is distributed to the project team to assist with tunnel construction decisions (i.e., targeting grout holes, optimizing mine-cycle lengths, and avoiding becoming stuck). The analysis and interpretation procedure has now been calibrated and refined using over 5,000 m (3 miles) of geologic face mapping data.

The effects of autogenous grinding and conventional grinding on the floatabilities of copper-nickel sulfides were investigated as a part of a pilot-plant development project on the differential flotation of Duluth gabbro. At the same mesh-of-grind copper, nickel, and cobalt recoveries were higher and residual sulfur in the flotation tailings was lower with the autogenously-ground pulps. With the ball-mill-ground pulps the residual sulfur in the tailings could not be lowered to the level attained by the autogenously-ground pulps even at increased levels of the collector addition. From mineralogical examinations of concentrate and tailings samples, an electrochemical interaction between grinding media and sulfide minerals was thought to have a greater effect on sulfide mineral flotation behavior than the breakage characteristics of the ore samples in these two types of mills.

"Knowledge of the abrasion resistance of aggregates is important when using them for asphalt and concrete mixes and highway construction materials. In this study, the usability of natural building stone waste as aggregates for different engineering applications was investigated. To this end, test samples were obtained from a number of natural stone quarries and stone cutting factories. The abrasion tests were carried out on the test samples and results were compared between samples. The abrasion strength values were determined with both the Micro-Deval (MDe) and the Los Angeles (LA) abrasion test methods. A correlation coefficient was also determined between the LA and MDe tests results using an appropriate statistical model.Introduction The rapid consumption of natural resources has led researchers to work on the efficient utilization of such resources. To this end one can convert waste into useful raw materials, or determine alternative uses of the industrial waste materials. This has become increasingly important as storing or dumping waste may result in environmental problems. In addition, the use of industrial waste in a different application of the construction industry prevents rapid consumption of limited natural resources and can mitigate environmental problems related to raw material production, Industrial waste such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, building demolition material, marble waste and dismantled asphalt have been used as highway and concrete materials (Ahmed 1993, Ramaswamy and Aziz 1992, Schroeder 1994, Ceylan and Manca 2013, Holtz and Eighmy 2000, Hebhoub et al 2011). It is very important to analyze whether these aggregates are of the required quality in terms of their application and their economic life. This analysis can be carried out using various tests such as the Micro-Deval and the Los Angeles abrasion tests, sieve analysis, durability chemical resistance, peeling and adhesion, and freezing-thawing tests (Erdem et al 1996). Specifications for aggregates also include terms that define the grain shape, cleanliness and surface textures."

In mid-April 1992, MINING ENGINEERING mailed a survey questionnaire relating to mining shovels and hydraulic excavators to 125 SME members working at surface mines or at the headquarters of companies that operate surface mines. The mailing was directed to individuals whose titles indicate that they have management or mine planning responsibilities for surface mining operations. A total of 56 usable surveys returned by June 17 are the basis of this report. Precious metals mines Eighteen precious metals mines or mining companies returned completed surveys in time to be included in this report. Of these, 14 use hydraulic shovels only for both ore and waste, I uses both hydraulic and rope shovels, and 2 use Caterpillar 988 front-end loaders for both ore and waste. (Of the latter 2, neither expects to be in the market for a shovel in the next three years. I of these 2 placed Harnischfeger P&H number one and O&K number two in response to the question, "Based on your current knowledge of their machines, which manufacturer would you likely chose to supply new shovels or excavators to a mine or mines operating under your responsibility, if you were in the market?") Another uses front-end loaders, make not designated. The latter does not expect to be in the market for mining shovels or excavators within the next three years. Of the final total of 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators to load ore and waste, 8 use Hitachi excavators only, 1 uses Demag excavators only, 1 uses Liebherr excavators only, 1 uses O&K excavators only, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and O&K excavators, 1 uses Harnischfeger P&H and Hitachi excavators, and 1 uses Hitachi and Demag excavators. Of the 14 precious metals mines using only hydraulic excavators, 7 use excavators in the 7.6 to 11.5 m; (10 to 15 cu yd) size range. Of these 7, 5 use only excavators in this size range, and they are used to load both ore and waste. 1 of the 7 also uses 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd) excavators, and I also uses a 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd) excavator. Of the 7 remaining of these 14 precious metals mines that use only hydraulic excavators, 3 use 11.5 to 17 m' (15 to 22 cu yd), 2 use 17 to 23 m3 (22 to 30 cu yd), and 2 use less than 7.6 m' (10 cu yd) units.

"The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), one of the archetypes of slow spreading ocean ridges, extends from the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge southward to the Bouvet triple junction making up a significant proportion (~ 40%) of the global oceanic ridge system. During the past few decades, many hydrothermal fields like TAG, Logatchev, Ashasze were discovered along the northern part of the MAR, whereas the southern part, which makes up one third of the ridge (6000km), shows little documentation of hydrothermal mineralization, except for three sites: Site 4°48! the Nibelungen Field, and Lilliput. During March to May 2011, following discovery of three new hydrothermal fields during the 2nd Leg of COMRA's 22 Cruise of the R/V DayangYihao, the 3rd and 4th Legs found another two high temperature hydrothermal fields (SMAR15°S, SMAR26°S), one low temperature field, and several fields with strong turbidity and temperature anomalies in the water column. In this study, we present a preliminarily study of the mineralogy and isotopic geochemistry of the sulfides from SMAR 15°S and SMAR26°S.SMAR 15°S is situated in a SE-NW offset depression of an axial neovolcanic ridge in the median valley, with water depth of about 2793m. In the water column around this field, strong turbidity and temperature anomalies were detected. Ten-meter tall venting chimneys, hydrothermal mounds, as well as a large amount of hydrothermal vent shrimp were also observed and recorded by ROV and deep-tow camera surveys. The samples collected from this field include sulfide chimney fragments, massive sulfides and basaltic rocks. Based on the major metal and the mineral assemblages, three types of sulfides have been identified: 1) Zn-Fe rich sulfides with abundant wurtzite and pyrite zoned fragments, 2) Cu-Fe rich sulfides with much isocubanite and pyrite assemblage, 3) Fe-rich sulfide with massive pyrite fragments. These indicate that this field has undergone at least three phases of mineralization during the venting history."

The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, treats wastewater generated by over three million people. A new tunnel and ocean outfall is being considered to meet future hydraulic demands and provide long-term redundancy for the Districts? existing tunnels, portions of which were constructed as early as the 1930s. The detailed process used to evaluate the feasibility of various tunnel and out-fall locations is described. Challenges include a geologic profile with mixed face and squeezing ground conditions; high water pressures; active fault crossings; gassy and contaminated ground conditions; and liquefaction, slope stability, and lateral spreading concerns in the area of the riser and diffusers.

To investigate the effect of simultaneous change in particle size of raw materials (including ore, reductant, and dephosphorization agent) on the direct reduction process of high-phosphorus oolitic hematite, the experimental research of method with direct reduction and magnetic separation was conducted to investigate the effect of simultaneous change in particle size of raw materials on the final reduction products in the form of mineral composition, reduction speed, metallic iron particle morphology, phosphorus distribution, and powdery reduction iron. The results revealed that under the same conditions of reduction temperature, the raw material particle size affects the mineral composition of the final reduction product, the coarser the raw material particle size, the slower the reduction speed, the lower the metallization rate, and the larger the final metallic iron particle size formed. Under the same conditions of raw material particle size, the reduction temperature affects the mineral composition of the final reduction product, the higher the reduction temperature, the faster the reduction speed, the higher the metallization rate, and the larger the size of metallic iron particles within a certain reduction time. Neither the raw material particle size nor reduction temperature affects the form of phosphorus present in the reduction product. Both the raw material particle size and reduction temperature affect the grade of powdery reduction iron to a less extent, but affect the recovery rate and phosphorus content significantly. At the same reduction temperature, the recovery of powdery reduction iron and phosphorus content gradually decreases with the increase in raw material particle size. For the same raw material particle size, the recovery of powdery reduction iron gradually increases, and the phosphorus content gradually decreases with the increase in the reduction temperature. The results identified the effect of simultaneous changes in particle size of raw materials on the direct reduction process of high-phosphorus oolitic hematite and provide a basis for the selection of raw material particle size for the industrial application.

The author has known Professor Wadsworth since the 1960s, when interest in the application of microbial technology for metallurgical processes was beginning its rapid rise. The development of bioleaching and mineral biooxidation was advanced, in part, by Wadsworth's belief in the potential for its application, as well as by his numerous contributions to the understanding of the fundamentals of hydro-metallurgy. Wadsworth is recognized for fostering research and development of the field and adding credibility to microbiological-based metallurgical processes, now often referred to as biohydrometallurgy. This Wadsworth Award is recognition of the field of biohy-drometallurgy. It is an honor to serve as a representative for all those individuals involved in research and commercial development of this technology. Modern commercial application of biohydromctallurgy began with the bioleaching of copper from submarginal-grade. run-of-mine material. Kennecott Copper successfully developed this process in the 1950s at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. Other mining operations around the world followed Kennecott's lead. Today, dump bioleaching remains a very low-cost process for scavenging copper from rock that cannot be economically processed by any other method. Despite the commercial success of dump bioleaching, little effort has been made to enhance the micro Biological component of this leach process. Expansion of biohydro metallurgy into recovery of other metals did not occur until the mid-1980s, when the first commercial plant for the pretreatment of refractory gold-bearing concentrate was commissioned at the Fairview operation in south Africa. Now, processes for copper bioleaching and refractory gold pretreatment are engineered specifically to promote the activity of the microorganisms. This paper reviews the current state of commercial applications of biohydrometallurgy. It examines potential future developments and portrays the role of the microbiologist in facilitating continued growth and commercial acceptance of the technology. The commercia1 examples in this paper illustrate the expansion of microbial processing in the mining industry during the last 20 years. One of the most difficult problems in mining operation is how to determine optimum cutoff grades of ores at different periods over the lifespan of the mine that will maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mine. Cutoff grade optimization maximizes the NPV of a project subject to capacity constraints in the mine, mill and the market.. This paper describes the determination of a cutoff grade strategy based on K. Lane’s algorithm adding an iterative optimization factor calculated for every year during the live of the mine to maximize the project’s NPV. The introduced algorithm is a windows based program developed at Virginia Tech which coded in visual-basic within a spreadsheet environment (Excel). The resulting cut-off windows based program is a user-friendly tool which calculates interactively different mining cutoff grade scenarios. The benefits of the methodology are demonstrated using a hypothetical case study. The authors have observed an improvement of the total NPV using this iterative approach using a year by year optimization factor.

"The proliferation of unconventional gas well development in the Northern Appalachian coalfields has raised a number of mine safety concerns. Unconventional wells, which extract gas from deep shale formations, are characterized by gas volumes and pressures that are significantly higher than those observed at many conventional wells. The gas is composed largely of methane as well as other hydrocarbons. Hundreds of planned and actively producing wells penetrate protective coal pillars or barriers within active mine boundaries, including chain pillars located between longwall panels. Gas released from a well damaged by mining-induced ground movements could pose a risk to miners by flowing into the mine atmosphere. The mining-induced ground movements that may cause well damage include conventional subsidence, non-conventional subsidence (e.g., bedding plane slip), pillar failure, and floor instability. This paper describes the known risk factors for each of the four failure mechanisms. It includes a framework that can guide the risk assessment process when mining takes place near gas or oil wells.INTRODUCTIONSouthwestern Pennsylvania has served for centuries as a producer of coal, oil, and natural gas. Coal mines were first developed in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam in the 1760s, with the first recorded mine in 1761 being the Fort Pitt Mine (Edmunds, 2002). Natural gas was introduced to the region when the Haymaker Well in Murrysville, Pennsylvania experienced a blowout on November 3, 1878. Although it was originally drilled prospecting for oil, it produced an estimated 30 million cubic feet per day of natural gas. Without well controls or pipeline infrastructure in place, it burst into flames and lit the night sky for over a year. Soon after, the Penn Fuel Company continued development of the Murrysville gas field and is credited with making Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the first major city in the U.S. to have natural gas supplied for home and industrial uses. “Natural gas is king in Pittsburgh,” proclaimed an October 18, 1885, article in the New York Times headlined “Value of Natural Gas, Its Use Clarifies the Atmosphere at Pittsburgh” (AOGHS, 2018). By the early 1900s, coal, oil, and natural gas production had reached the southern extents of Pennsylvania in Greene County. The county had first produced oil in 1886, and shortly after began producing natural gas in 1890. By 1906, over 1,300 wells had been drilled (Stone and Clapp, 1906)."

From 1993 through 1999 Cyprus Amax Minerals Company successfully completed eight major construction projects around the world. Six greenfield mines were brought into production, an ongoing operation was completely modernized, and an environmental issue was appropriately remediated. The projects stretched over three continents, from arctic Russia to the Atacama Desert, from 16,000feet to sea level, from city suburbs to remote wilderness, from a low of $130 million to over $1 billion. Open pit and underground; mill and leach; gold, copper, molybdenum, and coal were all encompassed. The breadth of diversity experience from these projects inspired Cyprus Amax to create a “best practices” project management protocol, to steer corporate expansion into the next millenium. This paper summarizes those best practices, while high-lighting project management pitfalls to avoid.

As the environmental movement gained force during the past few years, it was inevitable that attention would be focused on surface mining, and we have seen this method of extracting minerals from the ground come under heavy attack by conservation groups, the press and television, legislators at all levels of government,, and the public at large. It is difficult, and in some situations, perhaps impossible, to measure either the need for, or the results of, land reclamation in absolute terms. Therefore, much of the criticism of surface mining has been based upon subjective analysis rather than hard data, with the result that discussion of the subject often includes a fair amount of emotional response. To be fair, this reaction is not limited to just our critics; even we hard headed engineers sometimes respond in the same way, an observation with which you may agree when I finish this talk. This leads to the thought that whether you are for it, or against it, land reclamation in many respects is a state of mind. That is, our reaction to it can vary considerably, depending on how far we have thought it through. And think it through we must, because the pressures being brought to bear need to be met with positive actions if the problem is to be brought under control, and in the next few minutes I would like to discuss from a management point of view some ideas which might aid in this thinking process. It would be a mistake, I believe, to think that the current energy crisis will suddenly bring the environmental movement to a stop, and therefore, we can relax and go back to running our busi¬ness the way we used to. The Appalachian coalfield, located in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, has been one of the most productive in the United States. Total production from the Appalachian coalfield during 1994 was 340.8 Mt (375.4 million st), or 37% of the 929 Mt (1 billion st) produced in the United States that year. This region contains various coal types from high- to mid-sulfur coal in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to low-sulfur, compliance steam coal and premium-grade metallurgical coal in eastern Kentucky, Virginia and southern West Virginia. The region's product is in high demand in domestic and export markets. Productivity continues to improve, resulting in the primary coal operators solidifying their market positions.
