"INTRODUCTION The Butte district of Montana is well-known as one of the biggest historic producers of copper in the world. It is also a classic example of a porphyry Cu-Mo system that has been overprinted by zoned, polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag) lode mineralization. After copper, silver was the next most important metal mined from Butte, with over 700 million ounces of total Ag production between 1880 and the present day. Although many papers have been written on the mineralogy of the early porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization and the high-grade Cu-rich lodes in the center of the district, relatively little information exists on the mineralogy of silver in Butte. The purpose of this paper is to summarize past and present silver production trends for the district, and to combine previously published work with new research to examine the mineralogy of silver in the Butte mining district. BUTTE HISTORIC SILVER PRODUCTION According to a recent USGS compilation1, Butte is one of the most Ag-rich porphyry deposits in the world, both in terms of average Ag grade (8.6 g/ton) and total production + reserves (Fig. 1). It is also the 2nd biggest Ag-producing mining district in the U.S. (after the Couer d’Alene district, Idaho). Annual silver and copper production data for the Butte district, compiled from various sources2,3,4, are summarized in Figure 2. Peak production of Ag and Cu was in 1917. While Ag production gradually declined in the ensuing decades, Cu production remained strong until the years leading up to the closure of the Berkeley Pit in 1982. In 1984, mining of the nearby Continental Pit resumed under a different operator, and continues to the present day. The Continental mine produced an average of 35,000 metric tons Cu and 575,000 oz Ag per year between 1984 and 20044. These figures do not take into account a period of mine closure in 2001-2003 due to an unexpected hike in utility prices. The long-term decline in Ag/Cu ratio of ore mined in Butte (Figure 3) is due to several factors, including: 1) changes in metal prices; 2) a downwards decrease in Ag/Cu ratio of most of the lodes with depth below surface; and 3) a shift in mining methods from selective underground mining of high-grade veins to open-pit mining of the bulk rock."

Since 1977, Amax Coal Co.'s Belle Ayr mine near Gillette, WY, has been the largest producing coal mine in the US. In its 10 years of operation more than 90 Mt (100 million st) of coal have been shipped from the mine's facilities to electric generating plants across the country. It is thought to be the largest amount ever produced in US history from a single coal mine. The railroad is Belle Ayr's lifeline for moving this massive volume from a relatively isolated corner of northeastern Wyoming. There are no waterways for barge traffic, and highway truck hauling would be impractical considering the quantity and distance of coal to be moved. Transportation in the Powder River Basin-at least for the present-is strictly unit trains. An average of four unit trains daily load at Belle Ayr. These trains average 108 cars long, with a capacity of 91 t (100 st) per car. Burlington Northern Railroad serves the Powder River Basin, but locomotives supplied by Union Pacific, Milwaukee Road, and Kansas City Southern are a common site as well, since coal will often travel these lines too on its way to utility plants in Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Oregon. When Belle Ayr opened transportation in the Powder River Basin was in an early development stage. As the first large-scale coal shipper in the area, Belle Ayr was the only user of a 27-km (17-mile) railroad spur south of Gillette. Other mines, however, were to open soon on the abundant, low-sulfur reserves. Today, less than a decade after Belle Ayr's debut, 13 large-capacity mines operate near Gillette. The 27-km (17-mile) spur that once served only Belle Ayr has been extended 177 km (110 miles) south to service other mines as well, and to tie into a major rail line in central Wyoming. The Powder River Basin is now served by a wishbone-shaped track configuration that allows train movement north into Montana, south into Colorado, and east into Nebraska for connections across the country. Operations at Belle Ayr are closely tied to train arrivals and departures, with coordination essential between mine operations and rail personnel. "Train movement in the Powder River Basin has evolved to the point where we are fine-tuning mining operations to coordinate them with a more dependable transportation system," according to Joe Jefferson, transportation supervisor with Amax Coal's western division. INTRODUCTION Semiautogenous (SAG) grinding technology first started to be seriously considered for comminution circuit design in the mid-1960s as an alternative to the three-stage crushing circuits and rod-ball mill circuits in vogue at the time. Since this time the application of SAG mill technology has become widespread with over 250 mills larger than 20 feet in diameter sold (Jones 2002). The vast majority of concentrators constructed over the past quarter century have utilized SAG mill technology, and a SAG-based comminution-based circuit is generally the first choice considered for new projects. Since the first generation of SAG milling technology was applied, many lessons have been learned, and new supporting technologies have emerged which make the design, installation and operation of SAG &-based grinding circuits more robust and efficient. This paper will discuss the current status of SAG and associated technologies. MILL MECHANICAL DESIGN ISSUES Table 1 summarizes the manner in which SAG design capability has evolved over the past 30 years. Increases in mill diameter came slowly as the industry took a wait-and-see attitude as the technology of larger mill diameters was advanced. The first 32-foot- diameter mill was ordered in 1969. It was not until 1979 that the technology jumped to the 34-foot-diameter mill and 1988 for the first 36-foot-diameter mill. The first 38- and 40-foot-diameter mills were both ordered in 1996. At least five 38-foot-diameter and two 40-foot-diameter mills will be in operation by mid-2004. Advances in structural analytical techniques and increased computational power, coupled with field measurements of large operating mills, have increased the confidence of the mill suppliers in their designs and the operating companies in the viability of larger diameter mills. Australia is the largest exporter of coking and thermal coal to the international market. This market has required that the coal being presented to the customer has a particular level and consistency of quality. In this context, the Australian industry has developed coal preparation practices that allow this criteria to be met while maximising the recovery of coal from the resource. This has required on- going developments in both coarse and fine coal cleaning technology over the past 30 years. Coal flotation has undergone a number of developments with regard to maximising recovery from the overall plant circuit. This includes innovative flotation circuits (split feed), methods of enhancing the use of reagents and control of pH. During the 1990s, there have been major changes in flotation as practised in Australian coal preparation plants. Columns have become the preferred technology for both greenfield developments and plant upgrades. This paper will outline the above developments with a number of plant examples and the reasoning that has driven the change. The ongoing research that is being carried out on new cells to optimise the overall fine coal circuit will also be discussed.

A coal's size distribution clay content and moisture content can affect its handling behavior. But the combined effects of these properties and the effects of other properties are not known. Research underway at CQ Inc.'s (formerly EPRI's) Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) and at Iowa State University (ISU) will answer these questions as part of a four year project to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals. This paper will present preliminary data from the first year of the project, which focused on obtaining data on the chemical and physical properties of carious coals and their measured handling properties. Additionally, size, ash and moisture analyses and shear test data for several coals used at one power plant will be presented along with correlations between these physical and chemical properties and the measured handling properties. These data lead to the conclusion that while moisture content is the most important variable, the amount of -44 µm (-325 mesh) coal fines is a significant factor in determining coal handling behavior.

INTRODUCTION Large areas of the United States coal reserves have been undermined by room-and-pillar mining over the past century. These abandoned mines generally cause subsidence of the ground surface many decades after mining. Reports from England (1) where there is a longer history of room-and-pillar mining indicate that mines abandoned two centuries ago may still be causing subsidence, and causing surface destruction to urban areas or farm lands that have been developed in the interim. The devastation wrought by subsidence, both in terms of property loss and societal disruption is enormous. The authors discuss here the methods by which subsidence in abandoned mines may be controlled. Two distinctly different subsidence control technologies have been developed in the U.S. for abandoned coal mines. These are referred to as (1) Point Sup- port methods, and (2) Areal Backfilling. As the names imply, point support methods are used to protect individual structures, or even individual foundation elements of structures, whereas areas backfilling techniques may be applied to protect entire neighborhoods or urban districts hundreds of acres in extent. Both point support methods and areal backfilling have specific sub-categories of techniques that may be applied under different conditions as appropriate. POINT SUPPORT METHODS Point support methods are characteristically employed by civil engineers chartered with the design of a new structure or the protection of an existing structure. The subsidence control measures are only a part of a larger project, the safety of which must be assured to a degree of near certainty. The costs of point support methods involve a large number of bore-holes and the use of expensive materials in relatively small quantities. There exist several dozen point support methods, which operate either to support the underground cavities, controlling subsidence, or to isolate the structure from the effects of subsidence if it should occur. The latter methods usually involve deep foundations through the mine opening supporting the structure on the underlying strata. Our concern will be with the former method to support underground cavities to prevent subsidence. Gravel Columns and Associated Methods Gravel columns may be placed in the mine opening using the methods shown in [Figure 1]. Boreholes are drilled through the mine strata, and gravel poured down the borehole to form a pile on the mine floor. When the tip of the pile contacts the mine roof, it is rodded down to spread the pile, and permit additional gravel to be placed. The objective is to place as much gravel as possible in the mine opening, and to achieve firm contact with the mine roof. The gravel pile acts to reduce subsidence by three mechanisms. The filling of a significant fraction of the open mine volume reduces the amount of potential subsidence simply by killing open volume within the mine. In effect, the extraction ratio has been reduced by introducing the volume of gravel. The toe of the gravel pile abuts against nearby pillars, providing lateral support and protection against pillar deterioration. In effect, the height of the pillars has been slightly reduced by burying their lower portions. Finally, some direct support is provided to the roof strata, reducing the roof span and enhancing stability. The gravel column method may be used in a variety of applications, and with materials other than gravel. For example, gravel columns may be placed in a close line around the perimeter of the building to form a continuous gravel wall. The interior of the site may then be completely filled with sand, slurry or other material. Alternatively, a lean concrete may be used in place of gravel, so that the piles achieve significant structural capacity. The grout column, shown in [Figure 2], begins with the installation of a conventional gravel column which is placed around a grout pipe that extends through the borehole into the mine opening. When the gravel column is in place, portland cement grout is injected in stages. At each stage, sufficient grout is injected to fill the interstices in the gravel to build a column perhaps two meters in diameter and a meter tall. IINTRODUCTION Widespread activities in precious metal projects in the western U.S., Australia, Canada and other parts of the world have opened a flood-gate of consul- ting expertise to aid and accelerate the development process. Utilization of outside expertise has taken on many shapes and forms that have in some instances actually "decelerated" or "retarded" project progress. Small mines are especially vulnerable to apparent false-starts and misdirections, be- cause of their generally lower capital commitments, shorter lead times and limited mineral in-house expertise. Mine development for small mines requires fundamental approaches by knowledgeable consultants that are timely and cost-efficient and in line with accelerated development, if they are to be successful. The development process is obviously that process which brings a given deposit into production. Or, put another way, the process comprises all activities, decisions and commitments which take place from the moment an authorizing entity (usually a board of directors) com- mits to development and production (usually on the basis of a final feasibility study) until the first ton of ore is processed to a saleable product. The activities, decisions and commitments over a development period--such a period can range from as short as a year or less to as long as 5 years or more--are many, highly varied, and often interdependent. The development period is also particularly risky, not only because of the varied and interdependent decisions and commitments, but also because of capital demand amounts. Delays in the development process are thus particularly costly - sometimes so costly that small and often undercapitalized mining companies, failing to reach production and a cash flow within a planned period, face, if not bankruptcy, at least severe equity dilution or particularly onerous and restrictive covenants on additional loan financing. It therefor behooves especially small mining companies to examine ways to accelerate development. By doing so, the development process may actually meet planned scheduling. The development process generally comprises environmental impact studies completion, final engineering, permit- ting, financing, equipment and machinery procurement, contractor selection and construction -- such activities largely being overlapping. The paper addresses what the small mines operator or the small mining company can do with consulting firms to accelerate development. By "small mines" is meant open pit operations of 2000 tpd or less and underground operations of 500 tpd or less. By "consulting firms" is meant entities who do not possess an engineering and construction capability, such as Derry Michener Booth & Wahl, Pincock Allen & Holt, Behre Dolbear-Riverside, etc. The paper concentrates on gold projects. PRIORITY CONSIDERATIONS Of the items listed in the previous paragraph which comprise the development process, the two which most consistently appear to cause delays are permitting and financing. The former's delays can be due to political overtones and thus the delays may not be reasonably foreseeable. The latter's delays are most often due to inadequate preparation, and thus are avoidable. For the reason stated above, and considering that financing is fundamental to all of the activities which constitute the development process, the paper focuses on financing as the priority item which can most assist in accelerating or retarding the development process.

History of Development The hydrocyclone, probably because of its basic simplicity, has been used for various classification applications since before 1890. A patent was granted in the United States in 1891 to Bretney on a device for separating sand from water, collecting the sand in a closed chamber for intermittent discharge, practically identical to some present-day water desanding cyclones. Between 1900 and 1937 there were 30 or more additional patents issued on liquid cyclone configurations or their use. About 1937 liquid cyclones began to be used commercially in the treatment of cellulose fiber in the pulp and paper industry separating contaminating particles from the fiber in water suspension used for making high grade paper products. Nichols Engineering & Research Corp. of New York was marketing a liquid cyclone for cleaning sand and din particles from fiber suspensions in the pulp and paper industry by 1937. The designs during this period were such that the cyclones discharged a small amount of relatively high density material into a chamber connected to the cyclone apex which in turn discharged the collected dirt material intermittently. By the early 1940s hydrocyclones as we know them today began to appear both in the pulp and paper industry and in coal prorzssing.18 Considerable experimental work was done on small, mostly 3-in.- diam, cyclones operating at relatively high pressure drops, in the range of 50 psi, to remove very small contaminating particles from cellulose fiber in the production of high-grade writing papers in the paper industry.18

The Riverside Badlands Tunnel segment of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Inland Feeder Project, was lined with a segmented concrete primary lining and a welded steel final lining with the annulus filled with Low-Density Cellular Concrete (really a grout). The paper describes a numerical modeling technique that was developed to determine safe grout placement procedures to avoid pipe flotation, and shows the relationship between flotation and the rheology of the liquid grout. Design details of the steel liners are often not well suited to grout placement, and recommendations are given on how to improve this.

The conceptual designs of three new applications for the biogenic &S treatment of metal- containing waters are presented. These include: 1. the treatment of a circumneutral-pH ground water containing Zn and Cd using limestone as an alkalinity source, 2. a two-step treatment process where toxic heavy metals in contaminated ground water are recovered separately from nontoxic metals to lessen disposal costs, and 3. a copper recovery process that may be a low-cost alternative to solvent extraction/electrowinning or cementation for dilute copper leach liquors. Prediction of acid rock drainage (ARD) for low-sulphide, low-neutralisation potential (LSLNP) mine wastes is methodologically different from that for normal sulphidic mining wastes. In this paper. LSLNP wastes are conveniently defined as those with S2 < 1% and ABA-NP2 < 20 kg CaCO3 eq/t. The distinctiveness of ARD prediction for LSLNP materials originates from their frequently low oxidation rates and is mainly attributable to two reasons. First, the utilisation efficiency of available carbonate neutralisation potential (CNP2) rapidly deteriorates when the sulphide oxidation rate per unit mass of waste drops below a certain level. Reducing the flushing rate of a waste has the same effect as increasing the oxidation rate. Second, silicate neutralisation becomes increasingly important as oxidation rates diminish, and can no longer be ignored in LSLNP materials as it often is for normal sulphidic mine wastes. In this paper, the effects of oxidation rate, pore gas CO2 partial pressure, and flushing rate on ARD prediction for LSLNP materials are theoretically demonstrated with the help of modelling using the computer program MINTEQA2. A new methodology for ARD prediction for LSLNP materials is presented in terms of a prediction procedure. Finally, a case study is given to validate some of theoretical aspects discussed and to illustrate the use of the newly proposed ARD prediction procedure.

In the early 1940&apos;s Humphreys Mining Company in Florida pioneered heavy mineral mining with a dredge in the United States, In 1948 Du Pont, in conjunction with Humphreys, opened their first of two mining operations recovering a titanium dioxide product in Florida. Later on in 1952 Du Pont opened their second plant, both of which used a cutterhead suction type of operation. This process is also used in heavy mineral mining in Australia and Africa. In 1957 ASARCO started prospecting in New Jersey. Test borings indicated a large deposit of ilmenite bearing heavy mineral sands had been deposited and concentrated in an area near Lakehurst in central New Jersey. Humphreys Mining Company was contacted about the possibility of mining the ASARCO New Jersey property in much the same way as Du Pont and themselves were doing in Florida. An extensive study was made to determine the economic feasibility of mining the ASARCO property. During this study, extensive test drilling and samples for a pilot plant were taken.

"A three dimensional nonlinear finite element model was constructed to simulate and analyze the behavior of large diameter segmentally lined shafts when subjected to seismic waves. To reduce computation time, a less complex shell model was also constructed. Transient excitation was applied to the supported nodes of both models, at the base of the shaft, with a time-function representing the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The models are developed at the end of an original phased construction-stage analysis of the shaft. Displacements, forces and moments are monitored and compared during the analyses steps. During the initial 15 seconds of the earthquake, the top and bottom of the shaft show similar displacements. The maximum horizontal displacement within the shaft is approximately 3.5 inches in the solid model and the shell model results conform to this by a factor of 50%. Keywords: Segmentally Lined Shaft, Soil Structure Interaction, Seismic Analysis, Finite Element Modeling, Ground Modification INTRODUCTION TO SEGMENTALLY LINED SHAFTS Large diameter segmentally lined shafts (SLS) are underground systems, constructed sequentially using precast concrete segments to form a ring which provides both temporary earth support during excavation and permanent structural support. The segments are connected via alignment pins, bolts, packer material and other structural components that ensure the continuity of the SLS. In this analysis, the construction process uses a top-down sequence wherein each soil layer is excavated, damp-proofing is installed and concrete segments are assembled to form each ring. This process is repeated until design depths are achieved completing the shaft. It is known that cylindrical structures sustain lateral (earth) pressure mainly through the mechanism of hoop-stress. As Timoshenko’s ring theory goes, a cylinder shell structure is prone to buckling under external pressure [1]. In typical designs of small diameter shafts and tunnel linings with small diameter to wall thickness ratios, nonlinear buckling analysis (i.e., nonlinear geometric analysis) is not considered, since the buckling capacities for those structures are much higher than typical pressures encountered at their design depths. However, in shafts with large diameter to wall thickness ratios, buckling could become a critical issue. In any given mode, as buckling occurs in a ring, some sections of the structure move inward while alternating sections protrude. Although the presence of the surrounding soil could mitigate the buckling by resisting the movement (Soil structure interaction) seismic loads can cause ground movements and lateral pressures, exceeding the capacity of the structure. It is therefore essential to design the load bearing capacities of the shaft to minimize the possibility of any catastrophic failure due to earthquakes. This study explores the structural response of the SLS when subjected to seismic loads."

US mine operators frequently fail to investigate more cost effective and productive bulk material handling systems because surface mines seem to lend themselves to truck ore haulage. In this country, as a result, use of conveyors to move heavy loads from mine to process facilities has been minimized, if not actually neglected. In contrast, there are more than 50 conveyorized surface mines in successful operation around the world. These mine operators have learned that properly applied conveyorized systems can offer major savings in capital and operating costs, which contribute to improved profits when combined with other proven mining technologies. Growing acceptance and application of conveyorized bulk material handling in surface mines also points up how unique each mine is and how careful planning contributes to maximum mine effectiveness. Because of these differences, mining executives and technical and operating staffs need to develop an understanding of three factors in applying conveyorized bulk material handling in surface mines: • Why each mine will benefit from the type of automation permitted by conveyorized operation, •What kind of equipment is available, and • What applications most effectively demonstrate the first two factors in action - hauling either ore or waste. The conveyorized systems considered in this presentation have production rates from 0.5-2.7 kt/h (500-3,000 stph). Worldwide, these systems have been operating since the early 1960s. Advantages of Conveyors Why do you want conveyorized bulk material handling? First, it almost always provides lower operating and maintenance costs. Second, it frequently requires lower initial capital costs and almost always requires lower capital costs over the life of the surface mine. Third, it provides comparable operating availability, and finally, it frequently gives comparable operating flexibility - depending on the mine plan. Cost avoidance can be accomplished with modern production methods. These, in turn, permit increased productivity and reduced operating costs such as those for energy, maintenance, and manpower. It has been demonstrated in European surface mines and elsewhere, that conveyor systems frequently require lower initial costs than does truck haulage. Almost always such operations require lower capital costs over the mine life. Those costs include the continual addition of haulage trucks to both accommodate the increasingly difficult haulage routes and fulfill replacement requirements when trucks wear out. Conveyor systems handling ore in numerous large crushing and port facilities, which have operated since the early 1950s, have clearly demonstrated a useful conveyor life of more than 25 years. In contrast, off-highway trucks have life spans of six to eight years. The following examples illustrate comparative capital costs to purchase conveyor systems and comparable truck haulage units. Example 1 The ore haulage route from point A to point B is level and 610m (2,000 ft) long. The material weighs 1.8 t/m3 (110 lbs per cu ft) and must be transported at a rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). The installed capital costs to provide a properly designed conveyor that will transport the described material from point A to B is about $450,000. The capital cost to purchase three 77-t (85-st) off-highway trucks and one spare truck - which would provide equivalent capacity - would be about $1.2 million. The truck cost estimate is based on a 6 min. or 771 kt/h (850 stph) truck cycle time. Truck efficiency is estimated at 0.8. Each 77-t (85-st) truck would have an actual haulage rate of 617 kt/h (680 stph). Therefore, three trucks would be necessary to transport the designated tonnage of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). A movable crushing plant would be located at point A for the conveyors and a permanent crushing plant at point B for the truck haulage system. Capital costs for these primary crushing plants were not included in the calculations for either system because the capital costs are frequently comparable. Example 2 The transport route from point A to point B is 610 m (2,000 ft) horizontally and 122 m (400 ft) vertically - on a 20% grade (Fig. 1). The material weighs 1.8 t/m3 (110 lbs per cu ft) and must be moved at a rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph).

In fiscal 1996, the US Congress directed that the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) be closed. Certain functions were reassigned to other agencies. The remaining employees were separated and the unoccupied sites were decommissioned. As a result, 12 locations were closed and about 1,200 employees were terminated in March 1996. About 600 employees at five locations were reassigned to other federal agencies. This article provides a summary of the continuing functions, the agencies involved and the points of contact for each continuing function. The functions that were discontinued are also identified. The functions that have been maintained and transferred to other agencies are: ? Portions of USBM&apos;s Mineral Information and Analysis program formerly conducted in Washington, DC and Denver, CO were assigned to the US Geological Survey (USGS). ? The Mineral Land Assessment program in Alaska (Anchorage and Juneau) was transferred to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM). ? The Health and Safety Research program in Pittsburgh, PA and Spokane, WA was reassigned on an interim basis to the US Department of Energy (DOE). In fiscal year 1997, it was permanently assigned to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention within the US Department of Health and Human Services. ? Environmental Research at Pittsburgh, PA was assigned to DOE. ? Materials Research at Albany, OR was assigned to DOE. ? The helium program was assigned to BLM, where it will be managed pending privatization. ? Coal and noncoal mine maps were transferred to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE). The following locations were closed: ? Research centers in Denver, CO; Minneapolis, MN; Reno, NV; Rolla, MO; Salt Lake City, UT and Tuscaloosa, AL. ? Field operations centers in Denver, CO and Spokane, WA. ? Washington, DC headquarters office. To provide a concise picture of all of the affected functions, the following is a synopsis of the USBM program functions and facilities immediately before the closure. There were two principal programs: information and analysis, and research.

A detailed assessment of acid rock drainage (ARD) potential was conducted at the Quintette Coal Mine site in northeastern British Columbia The site is unusual in that the coal seams contain low sulphur levels as compared to eastern coals (typically less than 0.5%), and the non-coal wastes generally do not to have the potential to generate acid on the basis of static ABA tests. The presence of small iron-stained seeps on the pit walls indicate localized sulphide oxidation, while the overall mine site drainage has remained of excellent quality with extremely low levels of metals after approximately 15 years of mining. Thus the site provides an excellent comparison to more problematic coal mine sites. For the Quintette assessment, static acid-base accounting (ABA) analyses of individual samples were compared to criteria for potentially acid generating materials developed for the U.S. Appalachian coal, as well as criteria developed in British Columbia for hard rock mines. Geologic units were characterized by the percentage of samples, or weighted thickness, that was deemed potentially acid generating (PAG). Links were then made to actual seepage and water quality emanating from geologic units around the site. Seeps at the site demonstrate a large range in pH (2.32 to 8.18). The few acidic seeps (pH < 4.0) were found to contain elevated levels of sulphates, dissolved iron, manganese and aluminum, consistent with the metals typically of concern in Appalachian coal mines. Other heavy metals that were detected in acidic seeps at Quintette included copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium. The use of simple ABA tests, and comparison of individual sample results with the Appalachian and British Columbia criteria, was found to be useful in predicting the probable sources of the small localized acidic seeps.

The "FIRST AUTOMATIC SHOTCRETE TECHNIQUE" (F.A.S.T.) system, provides safe, efficient methods of remotely lining, shafts/raises. Two systems are available; one system will be used to shotcrete a 3.04m (10-ft.) diameter ventilation raise at a mine in Mexico; the other system incorporating remote control and sensing devices will to used to shotcrete ventilation raises from 2.75-4.9m (9-16 ft.) in diameter. This paper describes development of the system, from idea to field use.

Efficient methods for removal of copper from heap leach solutions without mobile organic phases are a current mining industry need. To satisfy this need a selective, high-capacity, durable solid material is required. The INEEL has developed a set of materials based upon current solvent extraction chelates that provide selective copper concentration in the presence of high concentrations of iron. In contrast to conventional solvent extractions, our strategy anchors the chelators to a non-polymeric solid substrate through the use of a custom designed linker molecule. The fundamental synthetic routes to these materials have already been established and attachment to the solid surfaces achieved in an efficient manner. Our continuing research is focused on the optimization of the synthetic pathways to these solid materials and the evaluation of their copper capturing capabilities.
