"When boring a tunnel, homogeneous hard rock is the exception rather than the rule. While contractors can set goals such as meters per month and performance incentives, it is also prudent to plan for difficult ground. A properly designed tunnel boring machine (TBM) can tackle fault zones, water inflows, squeezing ground, or whatever the risk may be. The alternative is not a good one: modifying the machine in the tunnel after bad ground is encountered. Not only does this result in increased downtime, but it also needlessly exposes the crew to the tunnel conditions. In the worst case scenario, the entire operation grinds to a halt.However, an accurate GBR cannot always be obtained, particularly for mountainous, high cover tunnels in remote locations. And even with a thorough GBR, unforeseen geological events can occur. What can be done in these situations? Difficult Ground Solutions (DGS) is ground investigation system with a suite of options that can be added to a shielded hard rock machine or dual-mode, Crossover machine to better enable advance when conditions are unknown or difficult conditions are anticipated.DGS consists of a set of integrated features tailored to a specific project’s geology. The main components of the system allow for ground investigation ahead of the TBM, increased monitoring and methods to keep a machine shield from becoming stuck.In fault zones and squeezing groundIf fault zones or squeezing ground are known or suspected, or if there is even a possibility of encountering them, this can greatly affect the TBM operation. Shielded machines protect the crew from the surrounding rock, and they can bore and line a tunnel efficiently, but in fault zones and converging material their shields can be their downfall. Avoiding a stuck machine is paramount to project success. DGS employs several features to avoid the problem of a machine becoming stuck. The first of these is multi-speed cutterhead drives. These drives effectively give the machine multiple modes of operation—high speed, low torque for hard rock, and low speed, high torque for difficult ground. Designing a machine with high-torque, continuous boring capabilities allows that machine’s cutterhead to restart with break-out torque in difficult ground. The net effect is that the machine can keep boring in the event of a face collapse and can bore through fault zones and running ground where the potential for cutterhead jamming exists. Going one step further, multi-speed gearboxes give the machine the ideal earth pressure balance- (EPB-) type torque if larger sections of soft ground are anticipated.Secondly, TBMs can get through squeezing ground and faults using Continuous Shield Advance. This design utilizes a stepped shield configuration — where each successive shield is slightly smaller in diameter — to avoid becoming stuck in converging ground. External shield lubrication is an added insurance against becoming stuck, using a series of radial ports that can pump Bentonite into the annular space to act as a lubricant in squeezing material.As a last effort, if a machine has already become stuck the TBM can utilize augmented, or “super” thrust. Additional thrust jacks can be added to supply an extra boost in a short stroke, generating enough force to break loose a trapped shield."

Today's mining industry faces many challenges. Perhaps none is more important than the challenge of improving our industry's public image. Opinion polls document public concern for a clean and safe environment. As part of that public, the mining industry must share that goal. The public is now the most powerful environmental group in society. And the public wants the environment to be protected. In May 1989, Edgar S. Woolard, chairman of DuPont, spoke to the American Chamber of Commerce. He said that industry's continued existence "requires that we excel in environmental performance and that we enjoy the non-objection - indeed even the support of the people and governments in the societies where we operate." In effect, Woolard called for "corporate environmentalism." He defined it as an "attitude and a performance commitment that places environmental stewardship fully in line with public desires and expectations." Environmentalism is no longer a fringe activity, but rather is now clearly in the mainstream. How can we meet public expectations and improve our image as an industry? One of the best ways is to plan, design and operate our mine facilities with environmental responsibility and social concern. The Mineral Hill Mine provides a good case study of a facility that has made this commitment. The project used an inter-disciplinary, multiagency task force, citizen advisory groups and engineering and design considerations. As a result, Mineral Hill achieved cost-effective permitting. At the same time, the operation demonstrated effective "corporate environmentalism."

Dow Chemical Co.'s research in lignite gasification has required that the fuel be upgraded in terms of ash loading and the slagging character of the residual ash. Lignite beneficiation has been shown to substantially reduce the total ash loading and, in some cases, causes very significant reductions in slag viscosity. In support of this work, a slag viscometer was constructed and the viscous flow properties of lignite ash were run as a function of temperature and composition. The flow as a function of temperature was shown to be predictable from the chemical composition.

The way and methods used for the surface mining of bauxite until the end of the twentieth century in the area of Ghiona, resulted in a significant burden to the natural environment, especially in the cases where it covered extended parts of forests and forest areas as well as important geomorphological formations. The impacts from the surface mining of bauxite which in fact constitute the object of this study relate mainly to the interruption of the natural continuity of the land relief and the alteration of the natural geomorphological activities and are due to: a) the alternating excavations with fronts of great heights, b) the depositions of large volumes of waste materials which originate from the revealing of the ore and c) the dense road network constructed in order to get access to the mine locations.

A prototype expert system for planning and designing an underground coal mine has been developed in a doctoral study at the University of Kentucky. This prototype expert system for underground coal mine planning and designing consists of a number of knowledge bases concerning different elements of design (e.g., ground control, excavation and bulk materials handling, ventilation, etc.). The objective of this paper is to present the development process of the ventilation design knowledge base for this prototype. This expert system prototype is intended for building an instructional expert system for underground coal mine design. Therefore, the undergraduate course on mine design has been used as the basis, for its development. Because of the availability of knowledge and expertise, this research study has been limited to development of a knowledge model for the Appalachian coal mining region.

Freeport Exploration initiated regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia in 1990 (see figure 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work which totaled 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) and was subsequently awarded additional?concessions which added 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments Freeport?s current land position totals l. 9 million hectares (4.7 million acres).

The US Bureau of Mines developed hand-made, steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFC) blocks for building mine cribs. To ensure wider usage of these cribs, US Steel Mining Co. initiated a joint development and evaluation program with Burrell Construction Co. to mass produce SFC blocks of reasonable dimension, weight, and cost. Small specimens and full-size cribs were evaluated to determine their compressive strength and post failure characteristics. After testing and adjusting of various concrete mixtures, a final formulation was selected that gave a nominal crib strength of 22 MPa (3200 psi) and a nominal modulus of elasticity of 6.9 GPa (1.0 x 106 psi.) These SFC cribs can support 6.4 times as much as a wood crib with the same load-bearing area. The SFC crib was proven to be an economical and effective roof support system through various underground installations.

An understanding of the spatial and temporal variations of surface moisture content over a heap leach pad is essential for leaching production and to achieve a high ore recovery. The current leach-pad monitoring and data-collection practice remains highly labor intensive and exposes technical staff to cyanide solution, a hazardous material. To address these challenges, we propose using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal imaging sensors to remotely obtain image data with high temporal and spatial resolution for monitoring the surface moisture distribution over heap leach pads. A field study was conducted over a sprinkler-irrigated heap leach pad at El Gallo gold mine in Sinaloa, Mexico, and the acquired data were used to generate moisture distribution maps of the heap leach pad’s surface. The created moisture maps provide direct visualizations of surface moisture variation over the surveyed area. Such graphical results are effective tools for inspecting heap-leaching operations.

The development of a successful restoration strategy for any drastically disturbed site is dependent upon a thorough understanding of the chemical properties of the spoils or mining wastes that need to be stabilized. The majority of revegetation research in the USA has been conducted on coal mining spoils and coal preparation wastes, and this paper will focus on these two materials and their modification for plant growth and water quality protection. Potential acidity derived from the oxidation of pyritic (FeS2) materials is the most important chemical factor that must be estimated and managed, but physical properties such as severe compaction or excessively low water holding capacity are also very limiting. Conventional soil fertility tests are very difficult to interpret for mine soils because of their tendency to extract elements from fresh, unweathered surfaces that are soluble in the extract, but not plant-available. A wide array of waste products such as sewage sludge biosolids and coal fly ash are readily available for use as mine soil amendments, but their utilization must be carefully matched against the needs of the post-mining plant community and their potential water quality impacts.

Reconciliation of production information is critical to evaluating the effectiveness of predictive models that would allow for the optimization of mining operations. Whether mining open pit or underground, mine-to-mill reconciliations can be one of management's better tools for the performance of proper accounting. Such reconciliations can also be a very useful tool in evaluation and optimization. This paper proposes a set of criteria and objectives for a typical reconciliation program. This paper also presents a stepwise, logical approach to performing reconciliations and discusses the benefits associated maintaining good information. It also highlights some of the potential pitfalls involved and the methods used to avoid collecting misleading information. These issues are illustrated with an example of a model-to-mine-to-mill reconciliation program that is being implemented at an operating mine. The program involves multiple predictive models (long-term and short-term block models), feed from three open pits and one underground mine, in addition to intermediate stockpiling, for a total of 23 mill streams. This paper presents a summarized version of this reconciliation program and its initial results as implemented at Minera Michilla S.A.

The Australian coal industry is characterised by efficient fines recovery, and the climate does not dictate the use of thermal drying. With the increasing trend to underground mining and hence finer ROM coal, and market pressures for reduced product moistures, dewatering issues are assuming increasing importance in the Australian coal industry. The greatest potential gains in dewatering performance undoubtedly lie in the treatment of finely sized material. This paper summarizes several chemical purification methods used for producing high-pure industrial minerals These methods, mainly including alkali melting, acid leaching, oxidation-reduction bleaching, are respectively used to eliminate the impurities such as silicates in graphite and diamond, ferric oxides in quartz sand or other valuable silicate minerals, colouring impurities in kaoline, barite and other minerals which are required to have a high-whiteness. "The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting, depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising, as the global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yet, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is, indeed, precarious and the mining community is a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, including many mine engineers who are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems.There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that the industry continues to expand scale toward “mega pits” and “super caves;” fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment, novel separations, processing and recycling methods, and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions, just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in the mining industry, complete with big data issues, sophisticated predecitve analytics and modeling efforts and cyber-security challenges.Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among the top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that the focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can miners be safer and healthier on-site and off? How can the industry contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and longterm, for having a mine next door? How can artisanal mining practices be transformed to also contribute to sustainable development? How can the industry’s work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises be improved?Given the coming challenges, there is no doubt that the mine engineers of the future will need highly diverse skillsets — meshing traditional and contemporary competencies to a degree not previously considered in mining, or most others fields. To be sure, the scope and scale of mining projects make them wholly different than most other engineering work, aside from perhaps the largest civil and urban development projects. While on-the-job experience will continue to be essential, formal education programs (i.e., at post-secondary institutions) must lay critical groundwork."

The grinding media materials for the mining industry require corrosion and abrasion resistance properties not only to minimize the wear but also to improve the flotation recoveries of sulfide minerals. The media wear mechanisms and the factors influencing the grinding ball wear during grinding are discussed with respect to abrasion, corrosion and impact wear of grinding media materials. Interactions between the grinding media and sulfide minerals in a ball mill adversely affect the floatabilities of the ground minerals. The possible galvanic interactions between grinding medium-mineral and their effects on the flotation responses of sulfides are also reviewed. The selection criteria for alloy composition that reduces the overall wear along with adverse effects on flotation are brought out.
