In the hierarchy of performing mine planning tasks, production scheduling is naturally at the bottom. Yet good production scheduling is probably the most demanding and difficult task to achieve for various reasons. Being the last task in the mine planning hierarchy, a proper production schedule must not only conform to both the long-range and the short- range mine plans but also satisfy many practical details that are unique to day-to-day operations. For example, the averages which were good enough for both long-range and short- range mine planning are no longer good enough for production scheduling. Instead, the variations become the overriding concern. The answer must also be obtained quickly and on time, thus adding another dimension to the overall problem. Because of these considerations, many production scheduling problems have been begging for solution during the past decade. Many attempts were made to solve the production scheduling problems in the past using computers and the available operations research (OR) techniques, particularly among academic groups. However, it is probably true that, compared with the current full-time computer usage in long-range and short-range mine planning, very little computer usage is being made in production scheduling to date.

The existing Rome-Florence railroad capacity is inadequate for the traffic volume. To increase this capacity and to reduce the traveling time the Italian National Railroad Administration has decided to provide an additional 400% of rail capacity. This new rail line will be known as the Direttissima Roma-Florence line. It is planned to operate the trains on this connection at speeds of 250 km per hr. Table 1 lists the main design characteristics. [TABLE 1. Castiglione Tunnel is a part of the fifth section, 42 km in length, which has been awarded to Consorzio Ferrofir which is a joint venture composed of the construction firms of Astaldi - Di Penta - Lodigiani - Sogene.

Laboratory testing was completed to determine the effectiveness of a fiberglass cable bolt (FCB) as a cuttable rock support for a continuous, hard-rock mining method. The FCB consists of four Polystal tendons combined in a node/antinode fashion, with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) spacers forming the anti-nodes. The largest ultimate pull-out load achieved by the FCB was 22 t (48,400 lb) at 89% of the tendons' theoretical pullout load. This premature tendon failure is accredited to: • differential stresses within the tendons and • differential tendon displacement. An increase in pull-out resistance for a given embedment length is due to: • increased bond area, • reduced interfacial shear and • "wedge" effect. The critical embedment length was found to be 40% less than for conventional steel cable bolts (SCB) at a 127-mm (5-in.) node spacing. An FCB can have up to a 92% increase in load-carrying capacity over a conventional SCB at equal embedment lengths. The load carrying capacity is equivalent to SCB at a 960-mm (37.8-in.) embedment length. Though the FCB is 7.5% more expensive than the conventional SCB (installed), this cost may be offset by increased performance. FCBs are a potentially viable support alternative for continuous hard-rock mining.

Understanding aquifer properties in surface mine backfill is essential for managing the groundwater flow system as well as controlling the formation and discharge of acid urine drainage. Slug tests (injection and withdrawal) performed on wells in mine spoil may yield two distinctly different response characteristics. One type of response is indicative of a porous media system. The second type of response indicates the presence of a pseudokarst system. The presence of voids or conduits in the backfill is indicated by an almost instantaneous partial recovery of the water level displacement. This rapid recovery is turbulent flow and cannot be analyzed by conventional (Darcian) methods. The turbulent flow may cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be less than the actual values. The slug dissipation surface area created by the voids contiguous to the test well add to the known dissipation surface area of the screened interval. This can cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be greater than the actual hydraulic conductivity or the aquifer to appear more permeable. Whenever analyzing data from aquifer tests in mine spoil, these potential problems must be kept in mind. In spite of the problems encountered during slug testing of spoil, the aquifer hydraulic parameters derived and the slug responses observed remain useful in the hydrologic characterization of a mine site.

The xanthate adsorption mechanism on pyrite was investigated with an emphasis on solubility studies. Additionally, adsorption studies, Eh and infrared spectrophotometer measurements were performed. Pyrite floats at pH levels between 3 and 6 using ethyl and amyl xanthates with a maximum at pH 4. The solubility of pyrite in the absence and presence of xanthate was investigated in detail with respect to pH and conditioning time. Experimental results showed that the solubility of pyrite increases from 60 to 120 ppm (10-3 to 2x10-3 mol/ L) in the presence of xanthate at pH 3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of ferric xanthate, dixanthogen and pyrite conditioned with xanthate indicated that dixanthogen is the only species that can be determined on the pyrite surface. Adsorption tests showed that the highest level of xanthate adsorption was in the acidic range; yet higher adsorption densities were detected in neutral solutions compared to alkaline conditions. Electrochemical data suggest that the doubling of the iron concentration is due to the reduction of ferric ion to ferrous by xanthate while xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen. Dixanthogen formation together with the hydrophobic iron hydroxy-xanthate complex on the surface is proposed to be responsible for pyrite flotation. A large percentage of Southern Appalachian coal reserves are located in seams less than 36" thick. As thicker and currently more mineable deposits are exhausted, methods of underground thin-seam extraction must be developed. Past experience with highwall mining of thin-seam coal has indicated that recovery rates tend to be lower than in conventional operations. It is suspected that this will also apply to underground thin-seam mining, regardless of proposed technology or mining method. Backfilling is one alternative for thin-seam coal mining; although backfill has been used extensively in hard rock mining its use in coal mining has been limited. The ability of backfill to provide additional ground support may enhance coal recovery by allowing for the design of undersized pillars. Backfill is capable of providing additional ground support by restricting lateral deformation of surrounding coal pillars and roof. This additional support can result in significant increases in recovery from thin-seam coal deposits. However, the overall feasibility of backfill is dependent on the in situ behavior of the fill material, the properties of the fill, the effects of the filling method on the total mining operation, and the cost of filling per extra ton of coal recovered.

For mine planning in the hardcoal industry the reliable prediciton of the properties of a deposit-both ahead of the zone to be worked as well as of zones at depths not yet developed - may help improve the production results of workings. With the wide spacing of exploration drillings usual in the coal industry, it is hardly possible to establish adequately reliable plans just by simple kriging methods. During the exploration phase a decision has to be made whether the zone ahead of a face area is economically profitable and, in addition, accessible and safe in order to be included in the production planning. It is, first of all, important to gather global information on certain parts of the planning area it the form of local estimates. Moreover, cut-off problems play a critical role, e.g. if there are set cut-off thicknesses as a criterion for minability or if safety aspects have to be considered. Conditional simulation appears to be a useful geostatistic method in order to localize or predict areas of potential rock burst hazard - based on geological criteria in conjunction with the guidelines by mining authorities - in the zones ahead of a working. It is a means of providing an objective basis for the evaluation and planning of mining activities.

INTRODUCTION Construction of tunnels in urban areas, especially reclaimed areas, pose many problems. The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer Tunnel, Contract 1A is a portion of the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Project located along the Brooklyn waterfront in New York City. This contract required the construction of a 2620 meter long (8600 L.F.), 3 meter (10-foot) diameter soft ground tunnel, eight Tunnel Manholes, nine Regulator structures, four Diversion and Tidegate structures and 765 meters (2500 L.F.) of branch intercepting sewers of diameters between .30 meters (12 inches) and 1.8 meters (72 inches). The construction contract bid price was $62 million with a duration of three years. The tunnel route crosses over five sets of operational twin cast iron subway tubes with clearances ranging from 4.3 meters (14 feet) to as small as 0.35 meters (14 inches). The route of the tunnel traverses historically interesting areas which have been reclaimed over the last 200 years. This paper is a case history describing the contractor's methods utilized to successfully advance the work through the above problem areas. Most oxidized manganiferous silver ores contain manganese associated with silver and are not amenable to conventional silver extraction methods, including direct standard cyanidation techniques. However, it is known that dissolution of the manganese might yield a suitable material from which silver can be recovered by conventional methods. In the segregation process, which involves heating the ore with a small quantity of salt and with a source of reducing agent to 680°C - 800°C, the silver is volatilized, migrates and is reduced to metallic silver particles. Conventional cyanide leaching is applied to the resulting calcine. Laboratory investigations have been conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02 % Cu, 0.09 % Pb, 0.33 % Zn, 12.55 % Mn and 187 g/ton Ag to study the influence of roasting temperature and time, quantity of salt and quantity of coke on silver extraction by the application of segregation roasting followed by cyanidation. Cyanide leaching tests were carried out at room temperature on the segregated calcines produced by using an alkaline cyanide solution containing 2.0 lb/ton of NaCN at pH 11 for 72 hours. The results indicated that 97.8 % of silver extraction can be attained at 850°C, with 2.0 % salt, 1.0 % Coke and 30 minutes of roasting time.

The stability of pillars in old mined-out districts is greatly dependent on the weathering action caused by moisture penetration into the pillar structure. Field observations in old mining districts indicated that this weathering action becomes critical in terms of the stability of the pillar if the coal seam contains parting or binder (layers of claystone or mudstone). The weathering action caused by moisture penetration over a long period of time degrades both parting and coal. However, it has been observed that the structural deterioration is more severe in parting. Moisture-penetration rates in parting and coal are different. The extent of the weathered zone in various layers of the pillar is primarily time dependent. This paper investigates, both in the laboratory and in the field, the effects of weathering action on coal and parting. In the laboratory, slake durability indices and uniaxial compressive strength tests for dry and saturated specimens are compared for coal. In the field, the in situ strength profiles for coal and parting layers are obtained, and the effect of time (in terms of the pillar age) on the strength profiles is studied An attempt was also made to establish formulae for time-dependent strengths of coal and parting.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT The Straight Creek Tunnel site is located approximately sixty (60) miles west of Denver, Colorado, on Interstate Route 70 in the vicinity of Loveland Pass, in the Rocky Mountains. The ultimate project will consist of dual two-lane vehicular tunnels with a building at each portal to house mechanical ventilation equipment and other installations. The tunnels run virtually east-west on an ascending 1.64 percent grade for a distance of approximately 8,900 feet, and will pass beneath the Continental Divide at an elevation of about 11,000 feet above sea level. The maximum cover is 1,450 feet and each tunnel is approximately 48 feet wide by 50 feet high as excavated. The work now under construction consists of the North Tunnel, which initially will have two-way traffic. Ultimately it will be the west bound lanes for Interstate 70. The completion of the North Tunnel will be the fulfillment of a long felt need for better communication through the high Rocky Mountains of central Colorado and is a vital link in Interstate Route 70. The use of various electrochemical techniques to study mechanisms of sulfide mineral- flotation reagent interactions is briefly reviewed in this paper. Prior to such studies it is desirable to thermodynamically determine solution conditions favorable for formation of hydrophobic species deemed to be responsible for flotation. The thermodynamic equilibrium involving both the stable and metastable species can be conveniently represented by an Eh-pH diagram. Thermodynamics can also be used to predict conditions where a mineral might not float if depressants are present. Under favorable conditions of flotation there is competition between reactions leading to formation of hydrophobic species with reactions that lead to formation of hydrophilic species. Due to the sluggish nature of the reactions involving sulfide minerals, a knowledge of the kinetic behavior of the system is necessary. Electrochemical methods of investigation are wed in laboratory studies to (1) control the state of oxidation, (2) determine the type and amount of electroactive species present at the mineral surface, and (3) study kinetics of electrode processes. By combining electrochemical techniques and wetting measurements the identification of hydrophobic species that might be present at the mineral surface could be achieved. Both contact angle measurements at mineral electrodes or flotation in a cell equipped with a particulate bed electrode can be used for the wetting measurements.

Asturias, in northern Spain, emits 18 Mt CO2/year to the atmosphere, which supposes the biggest industrial CO2 emissions in the country. In order to avoid CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, keeping the availability of energy from fossil fuels, background studies focussed to the selection of favourable sites for CO2 geological storage are necessary. In Asturias, the options for CO2 geological storage are sequestration in deep saline aquifers or sequestration in unexploted coal beds. In the area, there is the biggest coal basin of the country and a great Palaeozoic sedimentary basin with appropriate silicoclastic or carbonated reservoirs and impermeable caprock for CO2 geological storage, located in proximity to thermoelectric power plants and other sources of CO2 emissions. All evidences suggest that CO2 storage in deep aquifers is the most interesting option but a legal planning and a technical regulation are still to be done. The possibility for CO2 sequestration in coal beds is modest and associated to the CBM commercial exploitation. It is necessary to have in mind that the feasibility of CO2 geological storage in Asturias apart of technical factors will depend on price of CO2 ton, legal conditioning and possibility to apply emission rights to projects.

Environmental degradation due to abandoned quarries is an international problem, more intense when these sites are found in urban or suburban zones, in environmentally sensitive areas or are visible from sites of special interest. Rehabilitation solutions applied worldwide, range from simple relief restoration and planting to more sophisticated site exploitation in order to serve specific social needs. The elaboration of rational rehabilitation plans for every site presupposes deep knowledge and comparative evaluation of all the parameters of the problem. In this paper, a methodological approach of rehabilitation solutions for abandoned quarry sites is elaborated, based on domestic and international experience and practice. Solutions are grouped in eight main categories. In every category the framework of prerequisites and confinements (environmental, technical, social, economic, legal) for their application in Greek quarry site is investigated. A comparative assessment of alternative restoration solutions is introduced, using tools supplied by environmental economics, cost-benefit analysis, G.I.S. and multi-criteria analysis and follows in two stages: 1) Establishment of a set of criteria aiming at a priority list for a number of quarry sites located in a geographical or administrative district. 2) Assessment of alternative solutions for every single quarry from the previous priority list for the selection of the most adequate using technical, economical, social and environmental criteria.

First of all, I want to thank John Dunlap for asking me to this AIME meeting in Denver. I was first introduced to Denver and The Rocky Mountains more than ten years ago and immediately decided it was one of the most attractive spots in the world. I've come back many times since and still welcome any opportunity to return, even if it means I have to prepare and give a paper on potash. When John Dunlap gave me this assignment, he told me that the program would include papers on the geology of potash, papers on new discovered potash deposits and new mines and asked me to discuss potash from the commercial point of view. He also asked me to include a supply/demand outlook for potash. However, one thing he did not mention was "how far into the future he wanted me to look" and it seems to me the time element is a crucial factor to you who are both geologists and miners as well as to me. In your case, you have to look far enough into the future to give you time to explore, find, evaluate, develop, and bring into production a commercial deposit. My mining associates and friends don't agree on how long that takes but it's probably somewhere in the range of eight to fifteen years. But, they all agree on one thing and that is that the time required is continually getting longer. Now my time problem is just the opposite. It is "relatively" easy, and I stress relatively, to identify and evaluate the importance of the various factors that impact on both the supply of and demand for a commodity such as potash if the time period is today. It gets a little tough if one has to project into tomorrow or next week or next month. And when we start talking in terms of a year, five years or ten or fifteen years, things really get sticky and the old crystal ball becomes mighty cloudy. But we economists and forecasters are not known for our temerity so let me get on with the job at hand and take a look at the world potash supply/demand outlook.

Nautilus Minerals and Neptune Minerals are betting that the next great metals rush will take place more than 1,500 m (5,000 ft) below the sea. Nautilus is the first company to commercially explore the ocean floor for gold and copper seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits. Its main focus is the Solwara 1 Project, a polymetallic copper, gold, zinc, silver deposit that is under 1,600 m (5,200 ft) of water off the coast of Papua New Guinea in the western Pacific Oceans? Rim of Fire. Nautilus Minerals, in a joint venture with Placer Dome (now Barrick Gold), began its exploration of what would become the Solwara 1 area in 2005 with side scan sonar and dredge sampling. The dredge and grab sampling confirmed the grade tenor of earlier sampling by scientific research programs. The 45 dredge samples aver-aged 10.8 percent copper, 3.7 percent zinc, 224 g/t (6.5 oz/st) silver and 13.7 g/t (0.4 oz/st) gold. Nautilus has since staked out more than 300,000 km2 (115,800 sq miles) of tenement licenses and exploration applications in the waters off Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga and the Solomon Islands. That is an area about the same size of the United Kingdom. Interest in Nautilus and its projects has grown tremendously since its inception. The company is now listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. It has raised more than $300 million and spent more than $23 million on exploration. The company has gained the backing of mining majors such as Teck Cominco, Epion, Anglo American and Barrick Gold. It is positioned to become an emerging producer in 2010. Teck Cominco recently agreed to exercise share purchase warrants to acquire three million additional common shares of Nautilus at a price of US$15 million. This will take Teck Cominco?s shareholding to approximately 7.2 percent of the issued shares. Teck Cominco will conduct and manage a ship-based exploration program that will run in addition to the exploration that was already planned for 2008.

INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written and presented regarding agricultural lime and the subject has been covered extensively in books concerning soil science, fertilizing, limestone, etc. We felt challenged to construct a paper that wouldn’t merely be a repetition of past presentations. Therefore, we chose to begin with factors having the most impact on plant growth realizing that the audience is likely to be relatively unfamiliar with this subject. So, we decided to dig deep into the roots of soil and plant growth science in order to better understand the significant role of limestone in this important area. The soil with the higher plants growing upon it forms an open and dynamic ecosystem in which there is flux of energy and material (heat, light, water, nutrients, mineral and organic matter, organisms). Plants root in the soil and then take up oxygen for root respiration, yielding energy for nutrient uptake, water for turgescence and transpiration and use in photosynthesis and the mineral nutrients needed for the synthesis of organic matter. Above the ground the plant takes in light energy and heat using them in photosynthesis to assimilate atmospheric CO2. Photosynthesis is the basic life process of creation. However, we will look at the root room where soil, water, air, and heat economy and the supply of nutrients determine soil fertility and the important role lime plays here. Location is the primary point to be considered when discussing agriculture (climate and soil); secondly, the dynamic and mobility of the minerals (plant nutrients) in the soil; and thirdly the conversion of organic substances into humus. And then there is a great deal of water involved in the growing process. In order to produce 1 kg of dry plant substance, 300 to 800 kg of water must be pumped through the plant and is then lost by transpiration. Cereals, vegetables, and sugar beets consume between 400 to 500 kg of water during the growing process and long-growing crops, such as alfalfa and clover, can consume 600 to 800 kg of water per kg of finished product. Without water, a plant cannot grow. (Reference 1)

The apatite deposits in east-central Bahia, Brazil, are about 50 km east of Serra do Jacobina, between lat. 11° and 12° S. and long. 39°40' and 40° W. Apatite was found and examined at 15 localities in a mineralized belt that strikes about N.25° - 30 W. over a distance of about 100 km, but the size of the deposits has not yet been determined. Rocks of the region consist of a sequence of Precambrian migmatites and quartz feldspar paragneisses containing units of pyroxene-rich rocks, lenses of sillimanite-bearing quartzite, amphibolite zones, and calc-silicate marble lenses. Pegmatites and granites of probable anatectic origin (anatexite) are abundant. Faults are numerous. Clastic sediments of Tertiary and Quaternary ages cover most of the area; thus, outcrops of the Precambrian rocks are sparse. Trenches and pits have exposed mineralized zones as much as 10 m wide at some localities within the region. A layer of apatite at least 1 ½ m thick is exposed in a trench at Lagoa do Mel. At Rio do Peixe, vertical shafts have penetrated a mineralized zone, to a depth of as much as 13 m, of which about 25 percent is apatite. Apatite is massive or forms minute crystals, stringers, and disseminated grains in alkalic host rocks. At Apolinario, euhedral crystals of apatite are as much as 50 cm long and 30 cm in diameter. Associated minerals include vermiculite, biotite, scapolite, opal, chalcedony, epidote, montmorillonite, chlorite, kaolinite, sericite, magnetite, and limonite. Apatite is everywhere intimately associated with pyroxene-rich rocks, alkalic syenite pegmatites, and alkalic granite pegmatites. At Panelas-Retiro, apatite is associated with pegmatites, crystalline calcite (vein calcite), vermiculite, and pyroxene-bearing rocks. Analyses of samples show that the apatite is radioactive and rare-earth-bearing. Traces of vanadium and titanium were detected by spectroscopic analysis. The apatite was probably derived from phosphatic zones in the original Precambrian sedimentary rocks and has been crystallized and some mobilized by high-temperature regional metamorphism (higher amphibolite facies) into veins, pegmatites, and along certain preferred beds and fractures. Radiometric and geophysical surveys, in addition to conventional geological investigations, are planned to further investigate the nature and economic potential of the deposits.

Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales.
