Dense medium processes are used to clean over 50% of the coal that is fed into preparation plant facilities worldwide. The dense medium is formed using ultrafine magnetite which is recovered after the cleaning step using drain-and-rinse screens and magnetic separators. Despite the high efficiency of the recovery system, magnetite losses of around 0.5 to 1.0 kg/ton are common. Considering the recent escalation of magnetite to around $300/ton, an alternative source of magnetic material from coal combustion bottom ash has been investigated. A relatively low cost recovery system has been developed. Dense-medium tests using the bottom ash magnetics revealed a high level of efficiency as indicated by probable error values around 0.03 over the range of medium densities investigated. The results from both the recovery and coal cleaning efforts will be discussed in detail.

Particle size analysis is a fundamental measurement utilized in the mining industry, especially in comminution, hydrometallurgy, and mineral processing. While sieves and cyclosizers are the standard methods used to determine particle size distributions, in recent years alternative instruments have been developed that claim to provide more rapid and equally reliable results. Newmont Metallurgical Services has implemented the use of two such instruments, along with traditional methods (sieves and a cyclosizer), on a daily basis. The Malvern Mastersizer 2000 laser analyzer is a wet sample system that can analyze particles in the size range 0.02µm to 2000µm, and the Horiba CAMSIZER® is a dry system that can analyze particles in the size range of 30µm to 30mm using digital image processing. A comparative analysis has been performed to determine the applicability of each particle sizing method in laboratory testing.

The Carlin Gold Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation has been successfully operating an open pit gold mine and cyanide mill for approximately the past ten years. It is a unique operation in that about 20 percent of the mill feed is a carbonaceous ore refractory to cyanidation that must undergo a pretreatment stage developed for, and by, Carlin. The mine and plant are located in the Tuscarora mountain range is north-eastern Nevada near the towns of Carlin and Elko. Claims were staked at the minesite in 1961 and 1962. A drilling program was initiated late in 1962 and after drilling a total of 250,000 feet of rotary drill holes an estimated 9,300,000 tons of ore at a grade of 0.32 ounces of gold per ton was delineated.

When Gas hydrate formation rates have two steps: a nucleation induction step and an agglomeration step. Hydrate induction in distilled water is extremely slow because of lack of nucleating particles. Our laboratory found that synthetic anionic surfactants greatly improve both hydrate induction and agglomeration because the surfactant?s hydrophilic head absorbs water molecules and the hydrophobic tail absorbs hydrocarbon gas molecules, creating necessary nucleation sites. Vast hydrate deposits inhabit seafloors. What is the seafloor hydrate nucleating mechanism? We find that nano-particles of smectite clays (bentonite and nontronite) are hydrate-nucleating sites in sea-water-saturated, packed porous media, especially when trace quantities of anionic biosurfactants adsorb on the clay particles. Microbes and their bioproducts proliferate around seafloor gas hydrate accumulations. The seafloor microbe-mineral-hydrate synergy is explored in this paper. Rinker Materials Corporation (Rinker) operates construction aggregate operations in 15 states across the US. Thirteen of those operations are located in Florida, where Rinker produced approximately 40 million tons of aggregates in 2002. Because the deposits being mined in Florida are shallow sedimentary deposits of limestone and natural sand, with the deepest being approximately 75 feet deep, abundant acreage is mined annually. Rinker mines about 300 acres/year in Florida alone, and because there are so many wetlands and complete avoidance is nearly impossible, there are also wetland impacts. Thus, there is ample need for reclamation and mitigation, which presents an opportunity to involve local school groups with the planting and monitoring of these various projects. Rinker has successfully worked with a half dozen or so schools on these projects, involving students from grade school through college, with surprising success and outstanding results.

The choice between EPB - and Slurry Shields is influenced by the following factors: grain size distribution, cohesiveness, occurence of boulders, occurence of gas, feasibility of soil separation and muck disposal, and settlement properties of the soil. The simple equation cohesive soils = EPB Shields and non cohesive soils = Slurry Shield is very often superimposed by other facts. For example, the occurence of a large amount of boulders in weak cohesive soils, where the application of roller discs is not recommendable, may lead to the use of a Slurry Shield with a rock crusher, thus accepting the disadvantage of a sophisticated separation plant; whereas the occurence of contaminated groundwater or gas may exclude the use of a Slurry Shield. In the following examples the choice of a Slurry Shield or EPBS will be explained and justified with regard of the above factors.

Recovery of phosphate concentrate at Texasgulf’s Aurora Mine has received increased attention as existing mine and plant production capacity limits are reached. Improved mining techniques and mineral processing of waste streams offer the potential to increase phosphate production without major expansion. Innovative processes are being identified to maximize pit mining recovery and to minimize waste stream losses. This results in more effective use of the phosphate. Texasgulf Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Elf Aquitaine. The Aurora phosphate rock mine and refining facilities are located in North Carolina on the south shore of the Pamlico Sound. Phosphate ore is recovered by open- cast mining techniques. Draglines and other earthmoving equipment are used to uncover and mine the phosphate ore. The mined ore then is slurried and pumped about 8 km (5 miles) to the processing plant.

No group has been harder hit by the problems confronting the coal mining industry than small, independent surface mine operators in the eastern US. Burdened by costly government regulations, major capital shortages, declining productivity, high unemployment, and idle and closed mines, many in the industry think the breed will not be able to survive much longer. But there are a few sole owners fighting to remain independent-and succeeding. John Wagner is running a coal stripping operation in northwest Pennsylvania on a unique blend of aggressive management and marketing, support from a team of blue-chip professionals, and some unusual tactics. Though Wagner's approach is hardly an across-the-board formula for survival-he is currently reorganizing under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Reform Act-a look at his operation helps illustrate some of the unique problems confronting eastern surface miners.

Mine floor failures, such as floor heave and floor buckling, occur frequently in underground coal mines where soft mine floor exists. The types of failure can usually be classified into two categories; shear punching failure and tensile failure. A model based on the Winkler's elastic foundation is proposed in this paper for floor stability analysis. The model considers material properties of floor strata, in-situ horizontal stress, pillar size, entry width, and configuration of multiple-entry system and predicts stress conditions in the mine floor based on given in-situ mining and geological conditions, as well as deformation of the mine floor. This information is used to predict possible failures of mine floor by comparing the strength of mine floor with its stress condition. The validity of the model is verified by in-situ data described in this paper.

Discussion by E.S. Cheney Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural -tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. Although column flotation is known to be more effective than conventional flotation for cleaning fine coal, little attention has been paid to the considerable sulfur removal potential of this process. Whereas conventional flotation can only with difficulty remove pyritic sulfur from coal, flotation columns can make this separation readily due to their greater selectivity. This project has used a modified flotation column to remove pyrite from fine coal. This column has been shown to be capable of removing 70 to 85 percent of the pyritic sulfur from coal while recovering 80 to 85 percent of the total calorific value. However, the remaining pyrite is too finely disseminated to be readily removed by physical means. Currently, experimentation is in progress using bacterially-catalyzed dissolution of pyrite in acid solution to remove ultrafine pyrite and aid in the removal of coarser pyrite inclusions.

More than 80 million metric tons of fly ash is produced annually in the U.S. as coal combustion by-product. Fly ash can be converted to value-added products if unburned carbon is reduced to less than 2.5%. However, most of fly ash is currently landfilled as waste due to lack of efficient purification technologies to separate unburned carbon from fly ash. A rotary triboelectrostatic separator has been developed and patented recently at the University of Kentucky with unique features. Several fly ash samples have been used to understand the effects of major process parameters on the separation performance. The results show that compared to existing triboelectrostatic separators, the rotary triboelectrostatic separator has significant advantages in particle charging efficiency, solids throughput, separation efficiency, applicable particle size range. Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Metal Mining Div. operates three major open-pit copper mines in the western United States. These operations include Utah Copper Div., Ray Mines Div. in Arizona, and Chino Mines Div. in New Mexico. At each of these operations, the material is loaded by large electric shovels and transported by both truck and rail haulage. In 1977, 197 350 774 t (217,542,000 st) of ore and waste were mined at these operations, and 302 040 t (332,942 st) of copper were produced. Also a significant amount of molybdenite was produced as a byproduct. In operations as complex and large as these, there is an inherent need for up-to-date reports concerning how much material was mined during the previous day, and year-to-date, what equipment is scheduled for maintenance, how equipment has been performing, etc.

Laser-induced luminescence and breakdown spectroscopy methods appear to be a good tool for real-time evaluation of dolomite content on moving belt. The distinctive feature for time- resolved luminescence is Dy3+ emission in apatite, which is excited by 251 nm laser light and detected with delay time of 5 ms and gate width of 1 ms. The distinctive features for breakdown spectroscopy are 604 nm line of F and P in apatite and 518 nm line of Mg in dolomite. The representative sampling of more than 200 pebbles has been studied by both methods. By luminescence method 100% of dolomite will be identified, while approximately 15-20% of apatite with extremely week Dy3+ luminescence may be mistakenly counted as dolomite. By breakdown spectroscopy the identification is 100% correct both for dolomite and for apatite.

Under conditions of high methane content in the seams and the descending of exploitation to greater depths, methane hazard control is becoming more and more difficult. This is due both to the amount of methane released and to the technical possibilities of diluting and capturing it. The removal of excess methane from mine workings only by means of the ventilating current has become a problem. Therefore many countries designate large sums of money for research work in the field of controlling dangerous methane accumulations and for introducing this control into mining practice. In Poland the Central Mining Institute is leading in this field. Its Safety-in-Mines Institute, Barbara Experimental Mine in cooperation with collieries has recently carried out interesting investigations on the distribution of methane concentrations in gobs behind the front of longwalls mined with caving.

Lithium-bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias, Brazil, were investigated to determine whether there is a correlution between the lithium content of the mineral and the color of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high-grade lithium ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tour-maline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but that the color of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink color of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely due to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black color of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepidolites appear to be lithium- rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or Fe3+.

This paper examines the effects of different block dimensions and cone bases on the economic open pit limit design based on case studies on a coal deposit consisted of two west- east elongated, near vertical thin seams starting with a base model dimension of 200x170x50 (NX*NY*NZ) with a block dimension of 10mx5mx4m (DX*DY*DZ), the blocks were combined along easting, northing and elevation directions. Two cone bases were used, one with a base radius of 10 meters, the other with a base radius of 0. Two pit design algorithms, one is the floating cone algorithm, the other is an optimum algorithm, were used to see which one of the two pit design algorithms is more sensitive to block dimension and cone base variations. The results are presented and analyzed.

The Deep Coal Seam Project is a multi- year, large-scale research and development effort between the Gas Research Institute (GRI) and Resource Enterprises, Inc. (REI). The project is being conducted at the Red Mountain Site, a multi-well test site located in the southeastern portion of the Piceance Basin near Collbran in Mesa County, Colorado. The project objective is to develop the drilling, reservoir evaluation, completion and production technology required to produce gas from a thick, deeply buried coal seam. To understand the parameters controlling gas production, project efforts are focused on the Cameo "D" coal reservoir which lies at a depth of about 1707 m (5,600 ft) at the test site. This paper overviews the drilling, testing, completion, and production techniques used on the 1, 2 and 3 Deep Seam wells and implications for resource development.
