The beneficiation of barite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting barite's importance as an industrial mineral. Fifty-one studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1920 and 1986, and a review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information, including mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results, flotation parameters, and reagent concentration data, is presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of barite ores from a variety of origins.

Hecla Mining Company and NIOSH cooperated in a study to document the safety of rock support supplied by reinforced cemented paste backfill at the Lucky Friday Mine. Data are presented on backfill modulus values from laboratory tests and compared with modulus values from in-mine wall closure on the backfill. It is theorized that a compressive zone is created in the backfill between the upper and lower bearing plates on the reinforcing bolts, and that the backfill remains stable as long as the compressive zones from adjacent bolts overlap.

Lateritization is a surface and near-surface process enhanced by a humid and warm climate and by good drainage. It closely follows the development of the regional landscape. The cyclic landscape development on the Guiana Shield is accompanied by a progressively thicker and more evolved laterite mantle the older, and hence in most instances the higher the planation level. The known, economically interesting bauxite and aluminous laterite eposits of the Shield are restricted to the remnants of the oldest of the Cainozoic planation levels (level I1 and 111).

The prototype of an expert system, designed to assist layout planning of face operations, is presented. By specific combination of knowledge-based and conventional EDP techniques it has been possible to extend the known Kepner-Tregoe method up to the determination of mature layout solutions in difficult planning cases. It has been proven that the presented strategy - which can be applied to any kind of problem with similar structure - is apt to provide efficient EDP support for handling complex mining problems. Such support goes far beyond the purely numeric evaluation of envisaged alternatives.

Wet magnetic separation methods for the recovery of hematite and chromite fines and ultrafines were investigated. These methods included wet high-intensity and high-gradient magnetic separation, carrier or "piggy-hack" magnetic separation, magnetic field-induced aggregation and magnetic seeding. This investigation indicated that wet magnetic separation is more efficient for fines and ultrafines. This investigation also indicated that other methods can be used to enhance the particle aggregation and/or the magnetic response. The magnetic behavior of these minerals with respect to the magnetizing field, temperature and particle size is also presented.

Residence-time distribution techniques are useful tools in the analysis, characterization and modeling of the performance of processing equipment and circuits. This paper presents the results of both conventional and more-sophisticated residence-time distribution techniques for industrial copper-flotation-circuit data. While conventional techniques provide a description that is sufficient for macroengineering design requirements, the more sophisticated tracer-technique methods give more realistic descriptions of process flows and system effectiveness. It is demonstrated that these approaches can provide highly useful information about different equipment, as well as its configuration and performance.

Chemical and physical properties of thiol collectors are reexamined to compare the prospects of heavy metal-thiolate or disulphide surface reaction products acting as actual collector species. Recent evidences for the existence and importance of each of these types of adsorbed species on sulphide minerals are also discussed. A conclusion is reached that partial coverage by chemisorbed heavy metal thiolate is often sufficient to confer practical levels of hydrophobicity and floatability. Only on a few highly conducting and "noble" sulphides does adsorbed disulphide-type collector oxidation product appear to be significant.

Although most gold production from primary resources is achieved by cyanidation, many research activities have focused on alternative processes using noncyanide lixiviants. Such research has been prompted by environmental concerns and problems associated with the processing of refractory gold ores. Numerous research projects have been conducted to search for a noncyanide hydrometallurgical process for gold extraction. In this paper, a technical review of gold recovery from noncyanide solutions is presented, and new results are reported. Gold recovery techniques that are considered include activated carbon adsorption, cementation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and reduction-precipitation.

Phase One of Copenhagen Metro opened on October 19th, 2002 and is already a great success. 11 stations are open and Phase Two with 6 additional stations will open during 2003. Phases One and Two include 21 km dual track, whereof 10 km is in tunnel. 17 stations (six deep, three shallow, and eight above ground) will service passengers with trains running at 90 seconds intervals. This paper will discuss the various aspects of the Metro, where construction methods include TBM bored, NATM, Cut & Cover, Secant Piles and Diaphragm Walls.

A virtual reality approach is presented that can aid entities such as mining companies and land use planners in communicating a visual understanding of a mining operation to interested stakeholders, citizens? groups, and public committees. These visualizations are particularly useful in permitting, production planning and mining closures, contributing to accurate communication and evaluation of mine plans, ultimate land use and evaluation of potential design options A case study is presented, that was created using commercially available virtual reality tools, to emphasize the benefits of visualization technologies in the sustainable development of mineral resources.

INTRODUCTION A 100 ft long, 20 ft high and 18 ft wide NATM tunnel was excavated through grouted clean sands beneath a busy city street, including a variety of existing utility lines. The new tunnel associated with a hospital expansion will serve as a pedestrian tunnel connecting a parking structure with a new hospital facility. Tunnel construction started on December 15, 2005 when drilling for the grouting program started and was completed on May 26, 2006 when the tunnel final lining was completed. The tunnel was constructed by Kiewit Construction Company as a tunnel subcontractor to The Christman Company who is constructing the hospital facility for Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. URS was the project designer. GallZeidler Consultants, LLC were the contractor’s NATM consultant. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Michigan Street Pedestrian Tunnel is a component of the Michigan Street Development located along the north side of Michigan Street NE between Coit Avenue NE and North Division Avenue in the downtown area of the Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Michigan Street Development includes a parking deck and four new towers to be constructed over the proposed parking deck. The tower planned furthest east is being developed by Spectrum Health as the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavillion. The purpose of the pedestrian tunnel is to connect the proposed Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavillion with the future Spectrum building to be located on the south side of Michigan Street NE. The southern end of the tunnel was constructed with a bulkhead until the future Spectrum building is constructed at which time interconnection will be required. The tunnel site plan and profile are shown in Figure 1, Site Plan, and Figure 2, Tunnel Profile. Several challenges were faced during the design and construction of the Michigan Street Pedestrian Tunnel. These challenges included compressed design and construction schedule, maintenance of traffic and protection of old underground utilities. The tunnel was being constructed as part of the Michigan Street Development and coordination with other concurrent construction activities was required. The tunnel was constructed within a specified window of time to allow other associated construction activities to take place without compromising the overall project schedule. The design started in June 2005 and construction was completed by June 2006.

The highest recorded loss of life due to the collapse of mine workings occurred at the Coalbrook North Colliery in South Africa on 21st January, 1960. A total of 437 persons died when bord and pillar workings collapsed over an area exceeding one square mile The whole mass of strata from the 470 ft (143 m) deep seam to the surface being affected. Although the Coalbrook disaster was unique in its scale the problem of pillar failure, particularly in old workings, is by no means uncommon nor confined to recent history. Indeed, the collapse of large pillared areas was a regular feature of mining in the north of England in the early part of the nineteenth century. When a section of underground workings collapses, the air under the descending roof is compressed very rapidly. The pressurised air is dissipated subsequently at a rate governed by the leakage paths available. If the collapsing area is small, such as the case of a local fall of roof, then there will be little danger of an air blast. If, however, an extensive area collapses suddenly then the rapid compression of air will give rise to a pressure shock wave that will be transmitted through the remaining workings as an air blast. If worked out areas are connected to current workings via unstopped airways an air blast caused by pillar failure in the old workings will be extremely hazardous to personne1 and may cause extensive damage to equipment, perhaps even reaching to surface plant. At Coalbrook, the air blast blew out a wall in the surface fan house. Areas that are considered liable to sudden collapse may be isolated from current workings by the construction of stoppings. However, such stoppings must be capable of withstanding the 'hammerblow' effect of peak air pressures developed during the collapse. The work described in this paper was undertaken in order to determine the maximum air pressures that stoppings must withstand during a major pillar failure. The result has been a method of establishing peak air pressures that is quick and simple to use. Readers who are concerned primarily with the practical application of the method are advised to turn directly to the last main section of the paper.

Water is increasingly recognized as a critical issue for sustainable development, becoming as important as carbon to corporate responsibility and reputation. Although the cement industry’s overall ‘water footprint’ is relatively small compared to other sectors, the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD/CSI) has recognized the importance of water and the need to take actions towards efficient water management, with developing standardizing practices and employing a risk-based assessment approach, mostly at local level where individual facilities and activities can have implications for other water users in the area. Sharrcem, a member of the Titan Cement Group, has made significant investments to upgrade its production facilities, the technological process and apply environmentally friendly technologies. Under this frame, Sharrcem implemented a project for the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Cement Plant facilities, which has been successfully operating since early 2016. This paper discusses the technology applied at the new WWTP and the results achieved already, with significant improvement in the quality of the treated water, as compared to the previous situation where untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the nearby Dimce Stream. The WWTP project is a major investment of Sharrcem that aims to improve the quality of the discharged water effluents and thus prevent potential river pollution and overall protect the environment and the health of Sharrcem employees and local community. The WWTP operates with the Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR) technology, is fully automated and has been also connected with few households of the neighboring community to treat also their sewage water. The plant can be expanded in the future – to connect with additional households - without increasing the size of the treatment tanks. One of the benefits of this project is that by removing a variety of contaminants from water it becomes usable again, depending on the nature of the contaminants and the end use of the water treated. According to the monitoring results the treated water that comes out of the WWTP fully meets quality requirements according to the EU and local limit values standards

In no Confederation of Independent States (CIS) country does the mining sector play quite so commanding a role as in the mountainous Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan. Its president, Askar Akayev, says he would like to develop his country into "a Central Asian Switzerland." However, in Switzerland, the gold is largely under the street along Zurich's renowned Bahnhofstrasse. In Kyrgyzstan, though, the gold is still in the mountains. Accordingly, Kyrgyzstan's recent adoption of a comprehensive new mining law has attracted widespread attention. Akayev recently completed a tour of the United States. His visit drew large crowds from the business community at events staged in New York and Washington, DC. The success can be attributed as much to the attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan's min¬ing sector as to the personal charms of the nation's president. Led by a half-billion-dollar investment by Canada's uranium giant Cameco, the mining sector is leading Kyrgyzstan's economic revival. And Bishkek is beginning to show some of the same signs of a "boom town" that already mark its Kazak neighbor, Almaty. Mercedes and BMWs already outnumber the Volgas on Bishkek's major traffic arteries. After nearly two years of debates involving government advisors and a final round of deliberation in Parliament, Kyrgyzstan finally adopted its second mining law. This followed quickly in the wake of measures enacted in neighboring Kazakstan and proposed in Russia. Kyrgyzstan's new law replaces the 1992 law "On Mineral Resources." It was one of the first enactments of an independent Kyrgyzstan. The 1992 law made a major contribution to the introduction of free-market economics in the country by ending the state monopoly over mineral exploration and development. It also laid the groundwork for an independent mining industry. According to Kyrgyz government reports, Kyrgyzstan has about 270 commercially viable deposits of almost 40 types of mineral resources. These include oil, gas, coal, precious-, nonferrous-, ferrous-, rare- and basemetals. However, the nation's key draw is gold. Since enactment of the first law, the government has issued more than 100 licenses for geological prospecting for and development of established deposits of gold.

INTRODUCTION Application Measurement of rock deformation is essential to stability and behavioral monitoring of underground openings. The difficulties of obtaining adequate sample distribution, density, and orientation can frequently be overcome by the use of single and multiple position borehole extensometers. In its simplest form, a borehole extensometer consists of an instrument head, usually anchored in the collar of a borehole, and a number of in-hole anchors, each of which is fixed in place at a known distance from the collar. As rock adjacent to the borehole deforms, the component parallel to the borehole direction causes a distance change between adjacent in-hole anchors, as well as a distance change between individual anchors and the instrument head. These changes are measured by means of a mechanical link (usually wire or rod) extending to the instrument head from each anchor. The resulting data can be used to compute the distribution, magnitude, rate, and acceleration of deformation in the material intersected by the extensometer's borehole. Wire Vs. Rod Extensometers Since the early 1960s myriad varieties of borehole extensometers have become available through the combination of various special features of two basic instruments, the wire and rod versions of borehole extensometers. Recent publications have recommended shallow depth limitations for wire extensometers, and favor rod extensometers for a broad range of borehole inclinations and depths. There are three main reasons for using a deep wire system: its cost effectiveness; the fact that tremendous depth means tremendous rod weight which will cause the rod to buckle or rub against the borehole or casing wall; and users' attitude and proper understanding of how to install and apply a wire-type extensometer. Here experience plays a big role. Over the years, many have learned the hard way that untensioned rod extensometers are simple and inherently inexpensive, but limited to vertical up holes where sensitivity is not influenced by friction between the rod elements and the borehole wall or protective conduit, the inertia of the rod elements, or the direction of the movement to be measured. In deep, horizontal, or inclined holes, and in instances where compressive as well as tensile strains or displacements are anticipated, tensioned rod or wire systems are preferred. System Components Borehole extensometers are made up of at least the following five principal components: the instrument head; the collar anchor assembly; the downhole system of anchors and rods or wires; the signal cable if the head is equipped for electronic readout; and the readout apparatus, whether mechanical or electronic. These components are shown in Fig. 1. Borehole Requirements Most extensometers are designed for installation in nominal 75 to 57-mm (3.0 to 2.25-in.) diam drill holes. Either a diamond drill or a percussion drill hole is satisfactory, provided the variation in drill-hole diameter is within the tolerance of the standard anchor design. The basic system may be modified for other hole diameters by changing the dimensions of the collar anchor and downhole anchor assemblies. Some instrument heads and collar anchor assemblies require enlarged borehole collars, though usually not over 150 mm (6 in.) for a depth of 1 m (3 ft). It is desirable, although not essential, that holes be free-draining. Holes must be clean and free of debris before installation. Depth/Orientation of Extensometer Boreholes Extensometers are designed to measure axial strain components in the instrumented drill hole. As the drill hole is axially deformed, the distances between individual downhole anchors and the instrument head change, as do the distances between adjacent anchors. The distance changes measured by a multiple position borehole extensometer, for example, are reduced to functions of time, hole depth, anchor position, or other parameters of significance in terms of the structure under investigation.

INTRODUCTION Radon, thoron and their airborne daughter products may result in a significant biological hazard when they are concentrated in enclosed places such as mines, houses and caves. High concentrations of radon and its particulate daughter have long, been known to be a causative agent for lung cancer to uranium miner: (Archer 1973). More recently increasing concern has been expressed on the possible health hazards associated with long term exposures over large population groups to low levels of radon daughters (Cohen 1980, Stranden 1980). Due to its peculiar geological features, Italy has various natural environments where the content of uranium and thorium in the soil may increase underground radioactivity. The presence in Italy of many underground waters rich in radon may be considered a further important source of radon in underground mines. A preliminary survey of the radon and radon daughter air concentrations in italian underground mines was started in 1971 (Bottino 1973). Furthermore many studies (Sciocchetti 1978, Sciocchetti 1980, Clemente 1980) have been performed during the last ten year to characterize the natural radiation environment in Italy. It has been also demonstrated that 21OPb/21OPo skeletal burden in spa workers and non-uranium miners can be heavily increased by the exposure (short or/and prolonged) to high levels of radon daughter air concentration (Clemente 1980). All these studies have been of great help to put in the right prospective the radiation hazards linked to the underground working activity in non-uranium italian mines. Two main actions have been prosecuted from 1971 until today in order to evaluate in greater detail such radiation hazards and then, when needed, to obtain their reduction to levels which may be considered acceptable. The two actions may schematically described as the following: - Measurement of the radon and daughter (and thoron and daughter when needed) concentrations in most of the italian non-uranium mines. The assessment of the radiation hazards linked to both the annual average lung exposure and the 210 Pb - 210 Po annual average dose to the skeleton is then performed for each considered mine by taking into account the main parameters characteristic of the mine. - Set up of a national regulatory recommendation on the permissible limits for the radiation exposure of workers due to underground mining activity. Such recommendation have been established in 1978 and have been designed in order to implement a national radiation protection practice during the underground mining activity. In this paper a summary description of the results obtained during the execution of these two actions will be given. MATERIAL AND METHODS Measurement of Radon, Thoron and their Daughter Products The excution of the planned survey requires the availability of specific techniques and instruments for measuring the different parameters characterizing the radon, thoron and their daughter exposure in mines. A reference laboratory was set up for the development and the standardization of the measurement procedures. Measurements of radon, thoron and daughter concentrations are performed by various methods: instanteneous or grab sampling methods and continuous read out monitors. The radon concentration is usually measured by a modified version of the two filter method. Mine air is drawn into a polyethylene bag and the sample is there after injected into a two filter tube; after sampling the exit filter is counted by the alpha spectrometric technique. The measurements is completed in a total time of less than 25 minutes at a sensitivity level as low as 3.7 Bq/m3 for a tube volume of 15 1. The measurement of radon and thoron daughter concentration and of the relevant potential alpha energy concentration is performed by means of a portable spectrometric apparatus which was developed at our laboratory (Sciocchetti 1981). The device allows multiple operating modes: instantaneous or brief sampling period and automatic cycles; computer data processing is then provided. "For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. "Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be "land poor" but "coastline rich," meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. The Independent State of Papua New Guinea (the State) recognizes this tremendous opportunity and is taking a leadership role in this emerging industry by becoming a 15% partner in Solwara 1 (with an option to increase their investment to 30%).The Solwara 1 Project has been gaining momentum since Nautilus Minerals and the State signed an Agreement on April 24. This new agreement with the State in which they have staked a minimum 15% interest as a meaningful partner, underscores the State’s continued and widespread support for the Project. Signing of this Agreement was a historical occasion and a milestone achievement for Nautilus Minerals and the people of PNG.The machinery being built for the Solwara 1 Project is taking shape. The Seafloor Production Tools are now over 90 percent complete. Assembly of the biggest tool, the Bulk Cutter, was completed in April this year and assembly work on the Collecting Machine and the Auxiliary Cutter commenced in May and June this year respectively. The Riser and Lifting system, which will be used to transfer the mined material from the seafloor to the surface within an enclosed system, is over 50 percent complete. The critical path for the Solwara Project is to secure a suitable vessel arrangement. Nautilus aims to have this completed by the end of this year."

Introduction Today, uranium is of great interest because of its application to nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Kazakhstan has been an important source of uranium for more than fifty years. All uranium products are exported. Results In Kazakhstan uranium exploration started in 1948 and developed in several parts of the country thru mining of hard rock deposits. There are known around 50 uranium deposits in six provinces: Shu-Sarysuyskaya (57%), North Kazakhstan (18%), Syrdaryinskaya (15%), Ilyiskaya (7%), Caspian (2%), Balkhash (1%). In the Northern Kazakhstan province, KazSabton took over Tselinny Mining & Chemical Co in 1999. In this province the stockwork is of Paleozoic and Paleozoic folded complexes origin. In the Balkash province some mining of volcanogenic deposits occurred during the Soviet era. This province’s stockwork is of Endogenous origin.In the Ili province uraniumis mainly found in uranium-coal deposits formed by oxidation of the lignite beds roofs. In the Caspian province the Prikaspisky Combine operated since the 1960s a major mining and processing complex on the Mangyshalk Peninsula. This led to the founding of Aktau. It was privatised as Kaskor in 1992 and operations ceased in 1994. The uranium occurrence is associated with the phosphorous from fossil fish bone detritus conglomeration. In the Chu-Sarysu province, which has more than half the country's known resources, both Stepnoye and Tsentralnoye have been operating since 1978 and 1982 respectively. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones. In the Syrdarya province slightly to the west of the province’s center the No.6 Mining group has been operating since 1985. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones.
