The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

In the defunct Gorka quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha and containing approximately 1 million ton of high aluminium wastes and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water. The reservoir is fed with the filtrates arriving from the disposal site mentioned, at a rate ~130 m3/day. An alarming phenomenon is the subsidence of the pond bottom and the infiltration of solutions into the Triassic and Jurassic water resources, assessed at ~40 m3/ day. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Gorka pond is their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and variable pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides pumping out and treatment of about 500000m3 of effluents retained in the Gorka reservoir in an about yearly time. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant, according to a process so far verified on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product would be discharged into the Ropa stream. The brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl), whose amount may reach up to100000m3, might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. Similarly, there would be provided an intake of underflows of infiltrates (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches) arriving from the high aluminum site, and such effluents would be subject to ongoing dilution in water courses. It would be possible to test the system of underflows reaching the Gorka reservoir by means of geochemical identification, previously performed. The next stage following the pumping, would be the utilization of approx. 50 000m3 of bottom slurry. Highly alkaline slurries would be utilized in the production of self-solidifying mixtures. Slurries would be pumped out and temporarily dumped on drying beds, located nearby the Gorka reservoir, and later on used successively for making self-solidifying mixtures in a plant similar to a concrete making seat. Those mixtures would be applied for sealing the bottom of the Gorka reservoir and the necessary part of the edges of the defunct quarry. An alternative solution is the utilization of slurries in the facilities of the Trzebionka Mining Works and the application of self-solidifying mixtures, made in the Trzebionka Works, for sealing the reservoir bottom.

NTRODUCTION Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for pre¬dicting the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface move¬ment data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data col¬lected could not provide information other than surface movement. In a paper by Luo and Peng (1992), the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements using an electronic total station in subsidence survey are discussed. If the errors in the measured surface movement components are left untreated before calculation for deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain and curva¬ture), the errors will be carried over to the deformation indices and enlarged if improper numerical procedures are used in the calcu¬lation. It should be noticed that in protecting structures affected by ground subsidence, accurate surface deformation indices are much more important than surface movement. In order to improve the accuracy of the collected surface movement data and the calcu¬lated deformation indices, a number of numerical procedures are also proposed in the same paper. The proposed techniques include: a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data. DATA SMOOTHING Because of various factors, the measured surface movement data always contain errors, small or large. In order to better utilize the collected data, a data smoothing method is proposed to correct the errors in the measured movement data. The method uses the same concept as the influence function method (e.g., Knothe, 1957) on which many existing subsidence prediction methods are based. The data smoothing method makes necessary corrections on the measured movement for the point of interest according to not only the measured movement at this point but also those at the surrounding points. The contribution of a surrounding point in making the correction for the point of interest is inversely propor¬tional, in exponential form, to the distance between them. The mechanisms leading to the impact of airborne dust particles onto bluff flow obstacles have been extensively reported [1] and widely applied in dust measuring instruments (e.g., impactors) and in dust collecting devices (e.g., filters and scrubbers). If the human head is regarded as a bluff body, particles from dusty flowing air can impact onto the face by virtue of those mechanisms. While a great deal has been researched and written on the nuisance caused to human beings by the entry of dust particles into the body by inhalation through the nose and mouth, there appears to be nothing reported in the scientific literature about the irritation which can be caused by the impact of dust onto the face. And yet there is sufficient evidence to suggest that in certain working environments and under certain conditions, the problem is indeed a real (albeit subjective) one. In the coal mining industry, underground workers are exposed to conditions, involving dust-creating production and handling processes on the one hand and high ventilation rates demanded by the gassy nature of the environment on the other, in which the problem can exist. At the coal face, for example, the movement of powered roof supports ("chocks") can release bursts of dust formed by the crushing action of the supports, which in turn is entrained into the moving air and impacts onto the faces of miners working just downstream. The dust in question contains a large proportion of coarse particles which, while still fine enough to remain airborne for appreciable distances downstream of the point of release, are coarse enough to produce sen¬sation on impact with the skin. Adverse subjective response of workers to such irritation could damage morale and productivity. We have performed laboratory and field experiments to investigate the psychophysical and physiological responses of human subjects to dust impacting onto the face and into the eyes. Since this appears to be the first systematic investigation into these questions, the aim has been to construct a useful scientific framework from which to allow characterisation of the problem of such "fly-dust", and, ultimately, the development of methods for monitoring and controlling it. The main results of our research are given here; the theoretical and experimental details will be presented at greater length elsewhere.

In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. Introduction Men like physical power because it gives control over nature and over other men. Physical power comes in two common forms: explosive and non-explosive. In both forms, the most powerful devices yet invented make use of nuclear energy: on the one hand, the hydrogen or fusion bomb, and, on the other hand, a nuclear power plant. For some nations, nuclear power offers a measure of independence not otherwise available in a time of diminishing and unevenly allocated fossil fuels. Consequently, it has great attraction. Unfortunately, the application of nuclear energy (especially fission energy) to either explosive or electrical power entails a singular risk, that of injury from ionizing radiation, both natural and induced; this risk is found in all stages of the nuclear-fuel cycle, from mining of fissionable materials to the disposal of wastes produced in the "burning" of nuclear fuels. The health costs of nuclear power were not fully assessed in the early stages of the development of nuclear technology and some of them were not properly guarded against, either in the USA, which led the world into the nuclear age, or in Canada, which followed an independent path. What I shall do in this paper is to sketch the history of nuclear regulation in our two countries, to point out what I consider similarities and differences, and to suggest that regulatory history, as perceived by a concerned public, has a great deal to do with what is possible today and probable tomorrow, in other words, with public acceptance or rejection of the nuclear option. The U.S. situation As we sow, so shall we reap. In the USA, further expansion of the nuclearpower industry has been almost stymied by government actions that reflect mounting public concern. There is no national storage facility for spent reactor fuel and it has been decided not to reprocess it; consequently, existing power plants are about to choke on their own wastes. Since the Three Mile Island accident, no new nuclear plants have received operating licenses, although several are ready to start up. The uncertainty of future government action has caused the abandonment of plans for a number of new nuclear plants. In addition, many research projects related to medicine and agriculture, which produce low-level radioactive wastes, are about to be shut down for lack of licensed disposal facilities. The Bagdad mill, built in 1977, was de-signed for a mill capacity of 36,300 tpd. An ABC (Autogenous Mill-Ball Mill-Crusher) grinding circuit was chosen. The original mill contained three completely independent grinding circuits, each containing one 9.75 m diameter by 3.96 m long fixed speed autogenous mill, one 4.72 m diameter by 6.71 m long ball mill and one 2.13 m diameter short-head cone crusher. Total installed power per grinding circuit was 8,464 kw with 5,966 kw in the autogenous mill, 2,237 kw in the ball mill and 261 kw in the crusher. (See FIGURE I--Major Equipment Flow Diagram.) The autogenous mills were designed to be able to operate semi-autogenously but were never converted to SAG. As a result of this design, only about 4,100 kw of the designed power is utilized in the autogenous mills. The grinding circuits are closed with 2.44 m by 6.10 m double deck vibrating screens. Screen oversize is returned, by a series of conveyors, underneath the mill coarse ore stockpile to feed the crushers. Variable speed belts feed the crushers and control power draw. Crusher product reports directly to the tail end of the autogenous mill feed belt. (See FIGURE 2--Typical Crusher Feed and Product Size Distributions.) Tramp iron in the autogenous mill-crusher circuit is handled in a unique way. A magnetic sensor detects the metal. This closes a gate which directs the crusher feed onto a separate belt which bypasses the crusher and returns the material to the autogenous mill feed belt.

When Lewis and Clark first pushed their boats up the Missouri River, Meriwether Lewis reported the presence of coal in the western states by saying in 1802 that it "burnt tolerably well and afforded but little flame or smoke but produced a hot and lasting fire". Lewis would have been amazed and bewildered at the history of coal development in this region and the more recent political-socio-economic-environmental confrontations of today. Certainly without this coal the railroads would not have readily pushed into our western states, and the progress of this region would have suffered. The coal industry has passed from a period when "coal was king" to a period of depression in the industry, but its importance is being revived. A contributing and simultaneous environmental concern has emerged in the nation and in many states during the past ten years, partly caused by newly imposed standards for sulfur content of fuels. Much of the midwest and eastern coal cannot be used because of high sulfur content, shifting attention to the low sulfur coal deposits of the western states. In the western states, lands disturbed by strip mining or even underlain by strippable coal are small compared to the total acreage, and usually mining operations are on lands not under cultivation. There are some farm lands being disturbed by surface mining, but this is often over-emphasized. In states like New Mexico and Arizona the percentage is less. The value of the minerals underlying the surface certainly must be considered along with the value of the surface, and sometimes proper reclamation following mining can result in higher ultimate usage of the land.

The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. (Note: the Company cannot use the term ?ore? because it has never completed a feasibility study.)

INTRODUCTION The Transbay-Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) Project involves the construction of an approximately 1.5-mile rail line that will extend Caltrain commuter service and the future California High Speed Rail system into downtown San Francisco. The underground rail extension will be constructed by mined tunnel and cut-and-cover methods. Tunneling challenges include difficult ground conditions, low rock cover, the presence of historic buildings along the alignment, and the large tunnel span, ranging from approximately 50 to 65 feet. Three mined tunnel construction methods were evaluated: the Stacked Drift Method, the New Austrian Tunneling Method/Sequential Excavation Method (NATM/SEM), and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). This paper describes the challenges presented within the mined tunnel section, and summarizes the evaluation of tunneling methods that led to the selection of NATM/SEM. PROJECT OVERVIEW The existing Transbay Terminal opened in downtown San Francisco in 1939. This facility is antiquated, and does not meet current building seismic safety standards or the transportation needs of the Bay Area. For these reasons, San Francisco voters approved Proposition H in 1999, which proposed to construct a new or rebuilt regional transit center at the site of the existing terminal and extend Caltrain commuter rail ser-vice to the new transit center. The new transit center is the hub of the Transbay Transit Center (TTC) Program, which will greatly enhance regional transit service by providing connectivity for six Bay Area transit providers at one facility. Purpose This is a unique project because the mining and tunneling industries have become highly mechanized and cannot normally accommodate a project where surface disturbance must be minimized or eliminated when there is less than 10 feet of ground cover. More traditional less mechanized methods must be employed and the skills and techniques for accomplishing the work have become all but non-existent. Therefore, this article highlights those areas of specialized skills and techniques. Methods The article will describe the design approach, the method(s) of ground support selected, the method(s) of excavation selected, the planning, scheduling and materials selection process. In addition, the article will describe the actual production characteristics and the results of the project. This approach will concentrate on productivities, adaptations to actual conditions and the quality of the end product. The design approach basically was to insure that the temporary support methods were adequate for the excavation and shoring stage of the project. The final concrete liner was designed using conventional structural design methods with the goal of constructing a tunnel that will last 100 years. The methods of support were spiling and variations of spiling in order to provide advance temporary ground support. In this project spiling is steel channel cantilevered and driven into the ground ahead of the working tunnel face which supports the ground allowing the face muck to be removed with overhead protection’. Conclusion This will be a discussion of the applicability of the methods. The actual performance of the excavation and shoring methods will also be evaluated. The final concrete liner completion results, the actual production rates and the conformance with budget and schedule will be addressed.

The production processes that are developed in the mining and minerals industry are manufactured to be exposed to very aggressive environments. Chemical, abrasion, and impact expose structures and equipment, steel or concrete, to a significant deterioration. This causes damage and adds high costs to operations that can be reflected in the destruction of equipment and structures in the arrest of the production process, which becomes very costly. Also, there is the potential for personnel accidents, which would require large sums of compensation for an employee, thus directly harming the image of the mining operation and company. Manufacturers of paints and coatings that have major centers for research and development (R&D Labs) distributed globally have developed high-tech products for durable protection from the elements for structures and equipment used in the mining industry. The difference between these paintings and coatings and what is normally known as conventional paints (e.g., those called domestic or decorative), is its chemical composition, structured around polymeric components that have highly resistant, chemical and physical properties to cope with extreme conditions to which they are exposed. With this, and only this, longer life of components can be achieved for equipment and structures used in the production processes of the mining industry. Today, in addition to the important features mentioned, some manufacturers of the paints and coatings dedicated to this highly modernized process have invested large sums of money in developing new products that add operational elements to the painting process. These coatings provide added value and significant performance to companies mining operations and that we can describe in three fundamental concepts:

DSI DYWI Rock Dust application is aiding in enhancing safety and productivity in underground coal mining. DSI DYWI Rock Dust combines wet dusting technology and polymers to allow for drying and lift characteristics for rock dusting. DSI DYWI Rock Dust typically dries within 24 to 48 hours depending upon the mine air velocity and humidity. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator Machine is a completely hydraulic unit. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator machine allows for batching of product and face spraying operations in permissible locations. The DSI DYWI Rock Dusting Applicator Machine fits in one half of a battery or diesel scoop bucket for ease of transport. It is completely hydraulically powered by the PTO circuit. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator unit requires a scoop operator, and a person to operate the spray wand, simple operation with two personnel. The first demonstration was at an underground continuous miner room and pillar coal mine which produced a pilot test period opportunity, which proved to be successful, and has now been in full launch mode with the US underground coal mining industry. A typical batch of operation allows for 250? of roof and rib (19? wide by 6? in height) coverage of DSI DYWI Rock Dust application. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator contains a hydraulic powered air compressor which allows for 30-50% more coverage per batch by improved dispersion of product via air assist spray nozzle. DSI DYWI Rock Dust will add approximately $0.02 to $0.04 per clean ton of coal cost to the mining operation over traditional rock dust cost depending upon mining height.

In December 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed the widening of the eastbound tunnel on Interstate 70 (I-70) from two lanes to three. Work on the westbound tunnel began earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in December. The Twin Tunnels project is located in the mountains about 55 km (35 miles) west of Denver. They were bored during the 1960s when I-70 was being built and became the main access to Colorado?s growing number of ski areas and the state?s Western Slope. Throughout the decades following their construction, traffic on I-70 continued to increase and now the tunnels have a major bottleneck. Com-mutes to and from the mountain resorts, particularly on weekends, have become long and slow. Adding a third lane through the tunnels will help alleviate the congestion. (A complete report on the project can be found in T&UC, December 2013, page 61.) Once the eastbound tunnel was completed late last year, CDOT authorized the funding to begin work on the westbound side. That made economic sense, as the equipment used on the eastbound tunnel needed to only be shifted across I-70 to begin work on the westbound side, rather than removing it in December and bringing it back in March when construction began on the westbound tunnel. Work on the westbound tunnel uses essentially the methods that were used on the eastbound tunnel ? removal of the existing concrete lining and using drill-and-blast methods for tunneling widening. The main difference between the two tunnels is that the westbound side requires more blasting on both ends to widen I-70 to three lanes.

To ensure the continued growth and economic viability of the Western coal industry, both in the domestic and inter- national markets, it is essential for the industry to become more creative and active in confronting the most serious obstacle in this objective; and that is, the inherently long distances which Western coal must be transported inland to reach its major markets. Figure 1 shows the 1982 coal consumption by state for those states where Western coal was consumed. (Except as noted in this paper, Western coal producing states are defined as Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. Any exceptions used will have only an insignificant effect on the content of the paper). This figure illustrates the long distances that are required for Western coal to reach its markets. The total production for 1982 from the Western coal producing states was approximately 220 million tons, of which only 85 million tons was consumed within the boundaries of these states. The remainder was transported to markets outside the area. This map also shows, based strictly on the consumption of the states to which Western coal was shipped during 1982 and not considering other factors which are involved in the marketing of coal, the total market potential of Western coal would amount to a total of 445 million tons. This does not include export coal from the West Coast, which is now estimated to be less than 2 million tons for 1983. In 1980, it had been estimated that by 1985 the West Coast exports would have been at least 10 million tons per year, which will not be attained.

After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.

On the Mesabi Range, Ammonium Nitrate is used for blasting a variety of materials having widely varying blasting characteristics. The materials vary from hard, dense, magnetic taconite, which requires heavy blasting, through relatively soft, earthy, direct shipping ores, which require only light blasting to facilitate shovel operation. In view of the fact that materials gradational between these two end members are encountered in large tonnages, it is evident that a wide range of blasting situations face the mine operators on the Mesabi Range. In April of 1956, at Cleveland-Cliff s Hawkins Mine near Nashwauk, Minnesota, a fertilizer grade of Ammonium Nitrate prills was first used as a blasting agent. This first attempt was made without the addition of any carbonaceous material and even though it did go off, the force was not sufficient to produce the required results. Fuel oil was then added In the amount of one gallon for each 80 pounds of Ammonium Nitrate, with the oil and Ammonium Nitrate being added to the hole simultaneously. This blast was successful. Since then most of the mining companies have used Ammonium Nitrate, experimenting with various ratios of oil and fertilizer, mixing these ingredients either before or during loading of the holes. Since the additional of fuel oil to the Ammonium Bitrate before loading produces a more uniform saturation, most companies have adopted the method of pouring the fuel oil directly into the Ammonium Nitrate bags and then pouring the mixture into each hole. The ratio of 3- ½ quarts of fuel oil to each 80 pound bag of Ammonium Nitpate prills is now being used.

In April 1988, the joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen and Paschen Contractors (M-K/P) was the successful low bidder for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRD) Contract Number 73-164-2H. This project is yet another in the MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) devised to control and treat overflows from combined sanitary and stormwater flows. M-K/P's project, located along the Des Plaines River, consists of 21,569' of tunnel mined to a 35' diameter and two tunnels totaling 14,529' mined to a 12' diameter. All three tunnels will have 12" thick reinforced concrete lining. The path for combined sewer/storm waters to reach the tunnels begins at a connection structure, continues through an approach sewer, a sluice gate structure and down a vertical shaft which is topped by a backflow structure. The purpose of the backflow structure is to prevent water surging to the surface as the system fills rapidly. Backflow preventors represent a change in design after problems developed on earlier constructed portions of the T.A.R.P.. On this project, 14 drop shafts channel flows to the tunnel system. In addition to the drop shafts, contract specifications require an emergency or escape shaft be located not more than 4000 feet from the tunnel headings. Due to long reaches without drop shafts, four access shafts had to be constructed. Thus, the total shafts constructed under this contract will be eighteen plus one 30' finished diameter construction shaft located within Miller's Meadows. Figure 1 shows the overall Des Plaines River System and the M-K/P contract connection to previous and future MWRD projects.
