The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. Studies have linked long-term inhalation of diesel exhaust with adverse health effects such as cardiovascular disease, cardiopulmonary disease, and lung cancer. Diesel exhaust levels in underground mines can approach 100 times the environmental level and are therefore monitored closely in the mining industry. Elemental carbon (EC) (a product of diesel combustion commonly referred to as ?soot?) has proven to be a good indicator of diesel exhaust levels. The current procedure for measuring EC levels involves taking personal samples from a mine worker?s breathing zone and/or stationary samples in various parts of the mine and subsequently sending these samples to a lab for analysis by NIOSH 5040 method. Unfortunately, the whole process can take up to several weeks to complete. To address the problem of waiting weeks for results, NIOSH?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory is developing a portable device for measuring levels of elemental carbon. This optical device takes a continuous sample of air in the surrounding environment and measures the absorbance of light passing through a filter that collects diesel exhaust particulates within the instrument. This technology can provide a near real time measurement of EC with accuracy within 10% error. The ability to take near real time measurements, combined with the instrument?s portability (currently small enough to be worn on a miner?s belt), makes this device extremely useful in the mining industry.

Precambrian terranes in the Rocky Mountain region decrease progressively in age from the Archean Wyoming Province (> 2.5 b.y.) to the late Proterozoic in West Texas (figs. 1,2). Within the Wyoming Province, most dates fall near 2.7 b.y. although some are recorded at 2 3.8, 2.9, and 2.6 b.y. Although Penokean (- 1.8 b.y.) deformation and plutonism are recorded in southeastern Wyoming, most Precambrian rocks south of the Wyoming shear zone, which separates the Archean and Proterozoic provinces, are < 1.76 b. years in age. Supracrustal rocks in Colorado, western Arizona, and northern New Mexico fall in the range of 1.72-1.76 b.y., those in central New Mexico about 1.65 b.y., those in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico about 1.70 b.y., and those in West Texas 1.1-1.2 b.y. The Wyoming Province is comprised chiefly of 2.7 or 2.9 b.y. tonalitic gneiss terranes intruded by 2.6 b.y. granites in the central and southern parts of the province. Supracrustal rocks are minor and include greenstone belts comprised chiefly of pillow- ed tholeiites and graywackes and remnants of quartzite-shale successions. Metamorphic grade in greenstone-gneiss terranes ranges from upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and in quartzite-gneiss terranes from upper amphibolite to granulite facies.

The Bear Creek Uranium Mill was designed in 1975 to process 909 tonnes per day (1000 STPD) of low-grade uranium ore from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. The mill was expanded to 1818 tonnes per day (2000 STPD) in 1979. The Bear Creek Uranium Project is owned by the Bear Creek Uranium Company, a partnership of Rocky Mountain Energy Company and Mono Power Company. The original mill design contemplated processing ores from Bear Creek Uranium Company properties exclusively. The expanded capacity has been utilized for tolling ores from Kerr McGee Nuclear Corp. and other mining companies in the region. This paper describes the process of designing the original mill, the lessons learned from operation, and the design of the process modifications required for expansion. The project background, design philosophy, design basis, design criteria, actual flowsheet, special design considerations, and a comparison of assumed operating conditions and actual operating results will be presented. Bear Creek Uranium Company wishes to thank and acknowledge the help granted by the many operating companies who provided invaluable information, insight, and critique of the Bear Creek design through all the various stages and were instrumental in the successful completion and start-up of the mill. Without their contributions, the design philosophy used at Bear Creek would not have been possible and the results obtained would surely have been less satisfactory.

The concept of optical basicity is now being widely applied to rationalize and predict the chemical properties of slags. It employs signals from a probe ion to indicate the "state" or relative "freeness" of the oxygen ions in the slag, and hence provides a fundamental measure of slag basicity. Values of the bulk optical basicity of a slag can either be measured spectroscopically in samples of transparent solid glassy slag, or calculated very simply and accurately from the chemical composition of the slag. The way in which these values vary in different systems are illustrated as isoptical basicity lines on ternary diagrams, and the patterns obtained are discussed. The difficulties associated with assigning optical basicities to the oxides of transition elements are also reviewed briefly. It has been demonstrated that these bulk values can be used as the basis of a flux control model for steelmaking to achieve end-point chemistries much more reliably. Furthermore, several correlations have been established which allow the prediction of the slag-metal distribution of various solute elements. This approach has been used to predict the phosphorus distribution at the end of steelmaking, and also to custom design fluxes for the ladle and tundish to aid in the control of residual elements in the steel such as suphur, hydrogen and nitrogen.

The principle of high-pressure interparticulate comminution has been used very successfully since the mid 1980's for grinding a wide range of different materials. A number of reports about operating experience have already been published. High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) are currently making their debut in the mining industry. Experience is being gained with test machines, particularly for the comminution of hard rock. In the grinding of diamond-bearing ore, (Fig 1) interparticulate comminution has already become the standard for liberating the diamonds from the matrix. The advantages of interparticulate comminution are also recognized for the grinding of concentrates (chrome ore, iron ore). Numerous HPGRs are being used very successfully in this field. A testing plant for first-time industrial grinding of coarse, very hard and highly abrasive copper ore was built at Cyprus Amax's plant in Sieretta, Arizona (Fig. 2). The operating experience gained here showed that the grinding of very hard ores places particularly high mechanical demands on the mill. While the machine itself meets the high availability requirements, the wear-protection system proves to be the most sensitive point. Naturally, the properties of the ore to be ground exert a considerable influence on the lifetime of the grinding rolls. This paper describes the wear mechanisms and the wear­protection systems designed to combat these.

There are many carbon-in-pulp and resin-in-pulp screening devices which are at present in use in the South African mining industry. Each one of these screens has been an improvement, from the very basic air cleaned and 'EPAC' types which were either circumferential or · diametrical launder screens, which were developed for C I P in the early 1980's, through to the more sophisticated LAP and Kambalda Screens. Each one of these screens not only increased the performance or throughput per square metre than its predecessor, but also addressed maintenance problems, wear, reliability and the ability to handle surge conditions, thereby preventing tank overflow. However, very little theory has been presented concerning, the flow of pulp through internal screens, carbon loss and screen wear rates. Almost all this information is based on empirical data. The NKM screen continued this trend and was able to offer flow rates in excess of 180 cubic metres per square metre of screen per hour and an average screen life of approximately six months. However, with increasing sophistication of the screen and the use of wedge wire as opposed to the normal woven wire, the mass was significantly increased and costs began to mount. Therefore, Mixtec undertook to develop a radically different screen, which incorporated many of the advantages of .the existing equipment and combined a few of its own.

As the gold mining industry matured through the 1980' s, and into the 1990's, the development of refractory gold orebodies has become more prevalent. Newmont Mining Corporation developed and commercialized flash chlorination for the treatment of carbonaceous preg robbing ores; Homestake Mining Company developed and commercialized the industry's first application of autoclaves. Barrick installed the world's largest autoclaves on whole ore treatment a few years later. Dry grinding and roasting followed at Placer Dome's Cortez, Freeport -Independence and Newmont's Carlin operations. Today, numerous papers are presented on research efforts worldwide which address treatment of refractory gold ores by bioxidation, roasting, autoclaving, alternative lixiviant treat­ment and other novel process ideas. The overall objectives are to develop economic processes for difficult refractory ores where no process exists or conventional practice is cost prohibitive. Successful research can lead to lower operating costs, increased profits, and increased ore reserves. One such research effort directed by E I DuPont de Nemours and Company, Advanced Mining Technologies, was focused on gold ores which were refractory in nature due to the cyanide soluble copper content. Approximately five years of research effort culminated in a patented process (U.S. Patent 5,411,575)1 and the formation of a new joint venture company, AuGMENT Technologies, in 1995 with Newmont Mining Corporation. Today significant progress has been made in moving the laboratory scale tests to commercialization.

Three years ago, the New Britannia Mine started a project to improve productivity of its cyanidation plant. Results indicated that gold dissolution was strongly influenced by sulphide minerals and that the slower gold dissolution rate had a detrimental effect on overall gold recovery. The leaching strategy had to be modified to address this issue. Changes to the leaching circuit proved to be very successful. The first action was to introduce lead nitrate in the leaching circuit. The strategy of addition of lead nitrate was upgraded in three steps. An on-line free cyanide analyser was installed and the strategy of cyanide addition automated. The enhancement of the leaching kinetics have resulted: an 4% increase of gold recovery, from 87.8% in 1996 to 91.9% in 1999, which represents a reduction of 0.17 git Au in the leach residue; an average of 1330 additional extracted gold ounces per year from 1997 to 1999; a 21 % reduction in the cyanide consumption; the shut down of the cyanide destruction plant; and finally a contribution to the 27% reduction in the overall production cost per tonne of ore.($ 3 per ton). The significant increase of the throughput was instrumental in the reduction of the processing cost. In 1999, the improvement of gold recovery represented an additional gross revenue of $c""l.9 Million. The project is discussed in details in this paper.

The need for wartime supplies of uranium for the Manhattan Project prompted a 1944 study of uranium in South Africa. Uraninite had been reported by R.A. Cooper in 1923 in a Witwatersrand heavy- mineral concentrate, and the search for uranium, therefore, included the district&apos;s 30 operating mills. The method of investigation was simple: take bulk concentrate samples from the Wifley tables and determine their mineralogy. Samples were taken on a daily basis, although weekly composites also were taken of some mills. In 1944, most mills had simple gravity circuits and produced (I) a gravity concentrate, and (2) an all-slime [-75 pm (-200 mesh)] product. The tonnage throughput was known, and from that, head assays could be calculated. Concentrate samples were sent to the United States for chemical analyses. A Geiger counter set up in a Johannesburg hotel room provided preliminary data. The early data showed uraninite to be widespread. Microscopic, mineragraphic, and siezing tests were all under- taken in Johannesburg. Ultimately, tests led to a high grade (+90%) uraninite concentrate. Platinum and other heavies were the impurities. In seven months, the investigations had reached the stage where it was possible to forecast an annual production of 5.4 to 7.3 kt (6,000 to 8,000 st) of U3O8. The estimate is still realistic. Precious gold and silver markets support substantial activity in the search for and development of improved and unconventional ore and tailing processing methods. The need for such methods 1s strengthened by consideration of increasingly low grade and refractory ores and old tailing reserves. As background for this review of new and unconventional precious metal processing, recent USBM data (1981) show annual world gold production of about 40.8 million troy ounces. In the U.S. about half the 2.8 million ounce consumption was used for jewelry and the arts, 39 percent for industry, and 8 percent for dental purposes. World silver production in 1981 was about 365 million ounces. Domestic usage the same year was about 117 million ounces. More than $ was used for photography and 30 percent for electrical and electronics. By process, about 1 percent of U.S. production of gold came from amalgamation, 66 percent from cyanidation, 31 percent from smelting ores and concentrates, and 2 percent from placers. As for silver, about 11 percent is from cyanidation and 89 percent from smelting ores and concentrates. Evidently the search for innovative and unconventional precious metal processes must include gravity concentration, froth flotation, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical methods. Although smelting processes are equally important, they largely comprise nonferrous metal technology, and are not discussed here.

The present study refers to passive systems for the treatment of acidic liquid effluents emanating from mixed-sulphide mines by means of an-aerobic compost wetlands. An effort was made for the thermodynamic study of the chemical systems that are involved in the reactions during the simulation of this specific system using laboratory columns and a pilot scale application. The substrate used was a mixture of cow manure, a high alkalinity organic substrate and chestnut woodchips, while the synthetic solutions prepared for the laboratory experiments contained the three basic metal contaminants i.e. Fe, Zn and Mn. The precipitation mechanism of the contained metals and the form in which these are precipitated was therefore investigated by constructing the equilibrium phase diagrams (Eh-pH diagrams) of the Me-S-C-H2O systems. Based on the experimental results from laboratory and pilot scale tests the stability conditions of the chemical species taking part in the aqueous solutions were also determined and verified with the thermodynamic data available. The thermodynamic analysis of the system was performed for ambient temperature, which is the prevailing temperature on field constructed compost wetlands. Results were further validated with the results obtained by the application of a five step sequential extraction procedure in the remaining substrate in order to determine the form in which the metals were precipitated.

The waves of prospectors who struggled across the wide Alaskan wilderness between 1898 and 19 10 came close to but did not actually find the rich copper/zinc/silver deposits strung out along 161 km ( 100 miles) of felsic schist in the remote Brooks Range of northwestern Alaska. They had heard rumors of gold in the valley of the Kobuk River, so they skirted the Arctic ice pack in the Chukchi Sea and, in a force at least 800 men strong, ascended the Kobuk River in 1898. Twenty-eight placer mining camps were established but only a handful survived for more than a few years. One of the placers that died rapidly was Ruby Creek. A map showing the location of Alaskan mineral deposits is given in Fig. 1. The Ruby Creek miners, disappointed with the scarcity of gold in that creek, followed copper-bearing float to two places where the float was especially plentiful. Pits, a short adit, and a shallow shaft uncovered copper carbonates, bornite, and chalcopyrite in fractured limestone but the remoteness of the district blocked efforts to sell the claims or to raise capital for development. Shortly after 1906, the copper prospects were abandoned and, except for an account published in 1913 by the US Geological Survey, they were forgotten, as were the names of the prospectors.

A specialized Pore-Fluid Array sampler (PFA) was designed to collect and store pore-fluids to monitor temporal changes of ions and gases in gas hydrate bearing sediments. We tested the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry records hydrate formation or decomposition events and reflects local seismic activity. The PFA is a seafloor probe that consists of an interchangeable instrument package that houses OsmoSamplers, long-term pore-fluid samplers; a specialized low-dead volume fluid coupler; and eight sample ports along a 10-meter sediment probe shaft. The PFA was deployed at Mississippi Canyon 118, a Gulf of Mexico hydrate site. A 160-day record was acquired from the overlying water (OLW) and 1.3 meters below seafloor (mbsf). Fluids were measured for dissolved chloride, sulfate, and methane concentrations and dissolved inorganic carbon and methane stable carbon and deuterium isotope ratios. Chloride and sulfate did not change significantly over time, suggesting the absence of gas hydrate formation or decomposition events. Over the temporal record, methane concentrations averaged 4 mM at 1.3 mbsf and was thermogenic in origin (d13C-CH4 = -32.4±3.4?). The timing of an anomalous 14 mM methane spike coincided with a nearby earthquake (Mw=5.8), consistent with the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry reflects seismic events. The elimination of metal ions from aqueous solutions by biosorption plays an important role in water pollution control. Heavy metals are hazardous to the aquatic ecosystem and pose possible human health risk. Beside the toxic and harmful effects to organisms living in water heavy metals also accumulate throughout the food chain and may affect human beings. Conventional methods for removing metals from aqueous solutions before they are disposed of include chemical precipitation and sludge separation, chemical oxidation or reduction, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, electrochemical treatment, and evaporation. Alternative processing methods are being considered more seriously. Sorption and/or complexation of dissolved metals species based on the chemical activity of biomass, known as biosorption, is the base of the new technology for metal removal and recovery. Different types of biomass (dead and alive) have been investigated for biosorption of heavy metals ions. In the present work, the cadmium biosorption capacity and bioflotation of Rhodococcus opacus were studied. The adsorption capacity of biomass was investigated by batch experiments, the influences of some variables like pH and ion concentration were evaluated and the experimental data obtained for each metal were evaluated and fitted using adsorption and kinetic models. The bioflotation process showed that R. opacus has excellent features as collector and foaming agent after metal biosorption. Around 90% of cadmium uptake by the biomass was achieved by bioflotation.

A study on fauna distribution and abundance is being conducted in the Giona Mountain, in central Greece, area of bauxite mining. The specific aims of the study are: a) to estimate and map the distribution of mammals, and especially of the Balkan chamois, b) to estimate and map the distribution and abundance of breeding birds, c) to count the bird species using the area during spring and autumn migration and winter, d) to update the list of mammal and bird species of the mountain, with emphasis on rare and endangered ones, according to 79/409, 92/43 EU Directives and other relevant conventions, e) to compare the bauxite mining areas and species distribution and assess the possible overlap and compatibility of mining activities - species conservation, f) to assess the possible habitat loss due to planned mining activities. All estimations of mammal species distribution and abundance are being carried out by fieldwork using spotlight during the night along selected routes. Especially for chamois, line transects and vantage points with the aid of telescopes and binoculars are being used. Birds are being counted with the point count method in randomly selected plots distributed in all available habitat types and altitudes. The species distribution and mining areas will appear on thematic maps with the aid of a geographical information system (GIS). Finally, solutions for environmentally compatible mining activity in the area will be proposed.

The countries of Eastern Europe are former members of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA). Geographically, they are located in Central Europe (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia) and Southeastern Europe, largely in the Balkans (Yugoslavia*, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania*). It is important to remember that all of the countries of Eastern Europe had central planning imposed on them by the Soviet Union during the years following World War II. "Stalinist" policy for industrial development had three important tenets: • central economic planning, or a nonmarket-based command economy with administratively set prices; • economic priorities that stressed the development of heavy industries such as mining, metallurgy (steel) and heavy machine building; and • self-sufficiency at all costs, which was aimed at abolishing reliance on the world capitalist market, or reducing it to a minimum. Essentially, the system of industrialization that was used in the Soviet Union in the 1930s and 1940s was imposed on Eastern Europe. Organic market economic development in Eastern Europe ceased during this period. The flaws of this experiment became apparent when mineral processing facilities were set up in many areas of Eastern Europe that did not have reliable resources. Poland, Hungary and Romania are good examples of this situation. The Soviet Union became the principal supplier of iron ore and other minerals and mineral fuels, not only to these countries but to the Bloc as a whole.

At Sifto Canada&apos;s Goderich salt mine near Goderich, Ontario, the stress control method of mining was introduced to overcome increasing roof failure problems. After successful testing, the conventional room-and-pillar mining method was converted entirely to the stress control method. This conversion has successfully stabilized the ground, increasing the extracton ratio from 38% to 50%. At the same time, it reduced the ground control and rehabilitation cost by more than 80%. The success of the conversion is due to the quantitative technique of mine analysis that was developed to ensure that the conversion was safe and reliable. A finite element model of the ground was constructed to predict and validate the safety of the stress controlled mine opening. A system of in situ stress-property measurement instruments was developed to obtain input data for the computer model as well as to evaluate its output quantitatively with regard to time and location. History of roof problems Severe roof safety problems have been encountered at Goderich Mine since it opened in 1959. These problems continued into the 1980s. Following excavation, the roof strata started to deteriorate by slabbing. Even after roof rehabilitation, deterioration continued to progressively higher roof elevations, requiring repeated rehabilitation. The operational impact of these roof failures was severe, ranging from a considerable safety hazard to major production interruptions.

Some gold production was obtained from placer deposits in Puerto Rico during the period of Spanish colonial rule, but most of the gold was produced prior to 1536. There had been no significant hard rock mining, other than in quarries for road metal or construction purposes or for raw materials to make cement, prior to 1954 when the government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico recognized that changes in the mining code were necessary to stimulate exploration for metalliferous ore deposits. The Puerto Rican Legislature passed an act (No. 6), which was approved on Oct. 6, 1954, that reiterated that the title to all "commercial minerals" is vested in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The act provided for the establishment of a Mining Commission, stipulated the power% with which the Mining Commission was vested, and provided that no one may dispose of "commercial minerals" in Puerto Rico without a Commonwealth grant issued on its behalf by the Mining Commission. Act No. 6 also provided for prospecting permits, mining leases, and grants. The Mining Commission, by authority granted to it by Act No. 6, adopted regulations effective Nov. 21, 1957, relating to prospecting, leasing, and producing commercial minerals in Puerto Rico. Royalty rates were also specified for various types of deposits at different annual tonnage production levels.

Computers and communications technology have revolutionized many industries. In earthmoving, this revolution has just begun. The major changes are still to come but are just around the corner. This article presents a vision of this upcoming revolution in the earthmoving industry. This vision includes basic communication, machine monitoring and diagnostics, job and business management, planning and operations, and machine control. For the industry to realize maximum benefits from the information age, it must have a vision of the future that is shared by technologists, machinery producers and miners. History of the information age During the 1970s, the information age revolutionized retailing, starting with the grocery business. By using bar codes and laser scanners, individual items were connected to the information world of computers and communications. Once this connection was made, the data on what an item was and where and when it moved became valuable information for inventory control and marketing. Not only was the information valuable, it was easy and inexpensive to collect and manipulate. The effort required to provide the consumer with the right product at the right time was reduced. Costs went down and customer satisfaction went up. But there were casualties of this revolution. Many inventory counters lost their jobs. There were also equipment casualties. Cash registers that could not interface with the digital world were discarded long before the end of their useful life.
