Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The most valuable gem- quality red beryl comes from the Wah Wah Mountains of south-western Utah (Fig. 1). Red beryl occurs as a secondary mineral in topaz rhyolite. Marketable crystals from the Wah Wah Mountains have been produced from the Violet Mine, operated on a limited scale since 1976 under the ownership of the Harris family of Delta, UT. From 1989 to 1995, production from the mine amounted to more than $3 million with an inventory of several million dollars of unsold gems (Harris, 1995). In 1994, Kennecott Exploration leased the mine and surrounding claims to determine reserves and feasibility of gem recovery. Mining and exploration activity are continuing. Previous work on red beryl has dealt mainly with crystallographic, chemical and optical properties of the crystals (Shigley and Foord, 1984) with only general descriptions of the geology (Ream, 1979). However, the conditions needed for formation of red beryl have not been well constrained. It is generally proposed that beryl originates by precipitation in fractures and vugs from high-temperature gases as they are released from slowly cooled rhyolite lava. Dozens of topaz rhyolite flows and domes, similar in composition to the beryl-bearing flow in the Wah Wah Mountains, occur across the western United States (Christiansen et al., 1986). All of these flows devitrified to form vapor-phase topaz and locally other vapor-phase minerals such as bixbyite, garnet, hematite, pseudo-broo- kite and fluorite. But the occurrence of beryl is rare. Even within the rhyolite flow that hosts the red beryl, the productive open pits comprise only a small fraction of the surface area of the flow. Apparently, the conditions that favor the formation of red beryl are rarely achieved. Geologic setting The rhyolite flow that hosts the red beryl deposit lies along the eastern flank of the Wah Wah Mountains (Fig. 1). Prevolcanic rocks consist of Proterozoic, Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks that were folded and thrust to the east during the Sevier orogeny. Cenozoic volcanism began about 34 Ma. It consisted mostly of large volume dacitic ash flows and lesser volumes of low- silica rhyolite and andesitic lava flows. Beginning about 23 Ma, the style and composition of volcanism changed to smaller-volume, ash-flow and dome-forming eruptions of high-silica rhyolite and trachyandesitic lava. These rocks form the Blawn Formation of which the beryl-bearing rhyolite is one member (Best et al., 1987). Abbott et al. (1983) reported a K-Ar age of 22.1 + 0.8 Ma for this flow. It is probably the oldest topaz rhyolite flow in the Wah Wah Mountains. A subsequent episode (12 to 13 Ma) of bimodal magmatism produced the Steamboat Mountain Formation. The rhyolitic part of that is locally topaz-bearing. Displacement on the late Cenozoic extensional faults that formed the north-trending mountain ranges began about 22 Ma. Geology of the Violet Mine The rhyolite that hosts the red beryl deposit is part of a flowldome complex that overlies nonwelded tuff of cogenetic origin. This rhyolite is exposed over an area of about 9 km2 (3.5 sq miles) (Fig. 1). An unknown additional portion of the rhyolite is concealed beneath younger mafic lavas and sediments.

To date, human space exploration has been almost completely dependent on the use of resources carried with astronauts and cosmonauts from the surface of the Earth. The only exception to this has been the harvesting of solar energy to power space stations like Skylab, Salyut and Mir for long-duration missions. This dependence on materials which must be transported into orbit at costs in excess of $5000 per pound is the fundamental limiting factor in space exploration and operations. It is likely that launch costs can eventually be greatly reduced by means of such innovations as true single stage to orbit vehicles, aerospace planes, or serial electromagnetic or laser launch systems. However, the Earth will always remain an expensive source of materials for space construction and for basic commodities such as propellant and life support liquids and gasses. Fortunately, abundant sources of materials exist which are already in space, outside of the Earth's deep gravity well.

As the 2013 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2013 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Vol. 334. The timely publication of professional papers that promote the advancement of scientific and technical knowledge is critical for enabling technology transfer. SME plays a key role in this process through its publications. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful profession and society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2013 Transactions contains 73 papers covering most every aspect of the mining life cycle and encompassing the diverse sectors of our industry including coal, industrial minerals, metals, health and safety and computational methods. It includes all 18 papers published in 2013 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 65) and all 33 papers published in 2013 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 30). Additionally, this volume contains 22 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. Some of the many research highlights from 2013 include discussions of perennial issues, such as how to adequately prepare the next generation of mining engineering students for the workforce (Frimpong et al., pp. 44-52) and how to predict and prevent coal mine bursts and bumps (Pariseau, pp. 60-68), the highly anticipated February Rare Earths issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, and papers analyzing electrical injuries in the U.S. Mining industry (Homce and Cawley, p. 367-375) the latest in assessing the safety and efficiency of operations. All 73 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2013 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

Construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT), the last leg of the Anacostia River Tunnel System on DC Water’s Clean Rivers Project, started in September 2018 and was completed in April 2021. The 26-foot-bore earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) mined 26,737 feet at elevations between 80 to 160 feet belowground. Approximately 55% of the tunnel was cut through lower predominantly coarse-grained facies identified as the Cretaceous Patuxent Formation (undifferentiated) (PTX), and the remainder was cut through upper predominantly overconsolidated fine-grained plastic material facies identified as the Cretaceous Patapsco/Arundel Formation (P/A). Mixed face conditions were encountered in the transition from the P/A to the PTX and vice versa. This paper reviews the performance of the TBM that mined the NEBT through several unique challenges, including 8,000 feet of tunneling under the heavily developed Rhode Island Avenue corridor, major sensitive structures, cast iron water distribution mains, and other sensitive utilities.

"In August 2013, the Appraisal Practices Board of the U.S. Appraisal Foundation issued its “APB Valuation Advisory #4 - Identifying Comparable Properties,” which contains analysis and examples that may suggest a broader meaning of the term “comparable properties” than is current convention in real property value appraisal in the United States and internationally. The advisory is directed at the appraisal of real property of all kinds, including interests in mineral properties, as indicated by the inclusion of two mineral property appraisal papers in the appendix that lists suggestions for further reading.This paper firstly reviews as background the historical meaning of a comparable property, with its perceived constraints, against real-world examples of transacted mineral properties that are adjusted to subject properties to provide market value indications. The advisory’s findings are then examined and evaluated as to whether they may influence and benefit the work of mineral property appraisers, particularly in situations where their sales comparison analyses may be challenged. The conclusion is that the combination of constraints that the advisory’s findings specify for use of the term “comparable” will for mineral properties be met infrequently or rarely. As a result, mineral property appraisers are advised to avoid using the terms comparable or “comp” when referring to transactions of mineral properties that they analyze to derive data for appraising the value of their subject mineral properties. IntroductionA mineral property appraiser rarely finds a sale of a mineral property that meets the literal meaning of the term “comparable sale,” by being directly comparable to the subject property of the appraisal in all factors of significance in the determination of the value of the property interest being appraised. Real estate appraisers have long used a more liberal interpretation of the meaning of comparable sale and its commonly used abbreviation, “comp.” Real estate appraisers compare sales to their subject property on the basis of price per hectare or acre of land and price per square meter or square foot of building floor area. Adjustments totaling to within the range of +30 to -30 percent from the sale property to the subject, before factoring in the property area, have generally been viewed as appropriate for the sale to be considered a comparable sale."

The need to move large tonnages of slurry has grown as mines have become larger. As existing tailing depositories are filled up, new mines developed, or environmental requirements dictate, it becomes necessary to transport tailing particularly over longer distances. A typical slurry transport system is shown in Figure 1A. Figures 1B, 1C and 1D show sketches of the system auxilliary components: feed box, receiving sump and drop box, respectively. There are two basic types of slurry transport systems, packed flow and slack flow. Packed flow is typified by a pipe running full; slack flow by a launder or pipe running less than full. Slack flow in launders or channels is also referred to as open channel flow. Generally slack flow slurry transportation involves a flow with less than 65 per cent solids, and there is an upper limit on particle size, depending on the slope of the system.

The Bardon Trimount, Inc. stone quarry in Ashland, Massachusetts was the recent subject of a quarry closure review report. The quarry produces aggregate using standard drilling and blasting techniques. Stone is processed at an on-site plant. Noise monitoring data collected during the closure review indicate that the quarry generally operates within the quiet range. There is a decrease in noise while the quarry is not operating. Levels of dust associated with the quarry are low. Unpaved roadways are the greatest contributors of fugitive dust associated with the mining operation. The quarry cannot be seen from any homes within the town of Ashland, except during the winter months. The visual impact of the quarry on surrounding properties is minimal. Further quarry development is likely to reduce visibility of the quarry from some areas.

"The contract C931 of the downtown line 3 (DTL3) mass rapid transit system of Singapore includes half a kilometer twin tunnels running between Mattar and Macpherson stations. An EPB TBM of 6.6 m diameter was used to excavate both of these tunnels. The tunnels pass predominantly through a very stiff silty/clayey fine to coarse sand from the Old Alluvium Formation. In this paper, TBM selection procedure, TBM performance evaluation, and some of the tunneling operation challenges with the TBM in the Old Alluvium Formation are discussed. In this regard, soil conditioning trial tests were performed to resolve the clogging issue and low TBM performance. Thorough TBM operational data analysis was performed to detect high soil abrasivity, backfill grout leakage, and foam nozzle clogging. The results of some of the applied modifications are also discussed to show their effects on the TBM performance improvement. Finally, some of the challenging TBM design specifications are also discussed. INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground construction in Singapore has been increased in the last 30 years due to the demand for public transportation systems and the limited space above the ground for the infrastructure development. Downtown Line Stage 3 (DTL3) Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system has 21 km total route length and consists of 16 stations. DTL3 Contract C931 runs between Mattar station and MacPherson station. The construction works in this contract include twin bored tunnels of 6.6 m diameter and 450 m length and a TBM launch shaft of nearly 30 m depth. The tunnels run in urban area below Kallang Paya Lebar Expressway tunnel (KPE), Kallang River Canal, and Circuit Link. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the tunnels in between two subway stations. The tunnels were excavated by an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the Old Alluvium (OA) formation, a challenging geological formation in the sense of its abrasivity and stiffness. The Old Alluvium Formation mostly includes stiff to very stiff clayey and silty sand. The soil is un-weathered cemented to semi-cemented dense, mainly with a low permeability coefficient of 10-7 m/s and high SPT values (almost 100). The soil is classified as “very high abrasive” according to NTNU SAT test classification (SAT value of 15 to 42). The construction of the first tunnel drive was slowed down due to a number of factors related to soil conditioning and TBM operation. In this regard, a thorough analysis of the TBM operational parameters from the excavated sections was performed to identify the problems in time to prevent unwanted construction delays in the subsequent sections. In the following sections, a brief overview of the criteria used for TBM selection is presented at first. Then, the results from the analyses and tests performed to assess soil conditioning, grout leakage, and soil abrasion are presented. The last section discusses some of the tunneling design features that challenged the TBM operation in this project."

A two-step approach has been developed for surface mine short term planning by the authors. The first step is mid term control and planning by the use of Goal Programming. This step gives optimal results for mid term planning (i. e. yearly or quarterly mine plan) as well as a macro control for short term planning (i. e. monthly or weekly plan.) The second step of the approach deals with short term production scheduling by the application of CAD technique and Systems Simulation. An interactive color character graphic design system has been developed with a software package. The menu-driven and module- structured package provides sufficient functions for surface mine short term planning and makes the model very flexible and user-friendly. This model has been applied to a large surface coal mine for short term planning optimization. Satisfactory results have been obtained. It is concluded that for complicated mining conditions this two-step combined approach gives an optimal control of mid term planning, makes the short term planning easier to avoid blindness; it has been proven that the Goal Programming is a powerful tool for solving multi-objective decision-making problems; guided by GP mid term planning, the CAD technique and simulation software package for short term planning are able to be concentrated on their practicality and flexibility.

The purpose of the 3DOPT Program is to determine, starting from drill hole data, the optimum economic mining limits for an open pit. The economic limits are defined as those which maximize total profit, i. e. total mineral value mined less the total mining and milling costs, subject to the restriction imposed by the pit slopes. To accomplish this, the program employs the following: (1) A three dimensional matrix of equal sized blocks in order to file the engineering data and the cost/value data required to develop the profit figure for each block of ore/waste. (2) A graph algorithm developed specifically for optimizing these profits.1

"INTRODUCTION The 2014 SME Guide for Reporting Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves (the SME Guide) has been adopted by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME). The SME Guide is recommended as a minimum standard and a basis for developing industry best practices in the classification of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves for public and private purposes. The Guide is therefore strongly recommended to be used by members of this organization. The SME Guide was updated in 2014 to include CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserve International Standards) core definitions, and it is envisioned that the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will adopt the SME Guide in 2016. However, as of the end of 2015, the SEC Industry Guide 7 remains the standard for the U.S. reporting of Mineral Reserves. This paper will cover the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves, a discussion of Modifying Factors, and the classification definitions and guidelines. The definitions and guidelines contained in this report are from the SME Guide. FRAMEWORK FOR MINERAL RESOURCE AND MINERAL RESERVE CLASSIFICATION Figure 1 illustrates the classification of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves using the Guide. Mineral Resources are divided into three classifications of Inferred, Indicated, or Measured while Mineral Reserves include Probable and Proven classifications. These classifications reflect improved knowledge and confidence of the deposit from the top of the figure to the bottom. In other terms, the deposit risk also decreases from top to bottom.The relationships in Figure 1 reflect different levels of geoscientific knowledge and different degrees of technical and economic evaluation. Mineral Resources can be estimated on the basis of geoscientific information with input from other disciplines to establish reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. It was not too many years ago that the classification of a Mineral Resource was based on the evaluation of a limited set of factors that included spatial drill hole and grade distribution (kriging variance, as example), distance to the closest hole, and number of samples used to estimate a block grade. These are still important considerations, but classification following the Guide must also take into account sample integrity, sample QAQC, database integrity and completeness, geological understanding, and geological and grade or quality continuity. In addition, a general consideration of the Modifying Factors, to establish reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction, adds complexity to the classification."

"Understanding ground control problems continues to remain a focus of the mining engineering community. To aid mine operators and engineers in identifying and responding to ground control issues, the Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed. The GOS is an integrated, web-based graphical user interface that displays ground response data collected wirelessly from an underground mine. It presents data in an intuitive manner to assist mine personnel, who are on- or off-site, in quickly identifying hazardous areas. Geotechnical instrumentation will be connected to wireless transmitters that will relay data in real-time to a surface computer that stores the information in a database. The GOS website will then display the geotechnical data in graphical and tabular forms, as well as in conditionally formatted mine maps. Data from each measurement device will be able to be viewed in its entirety or within a time interval, and can be downloaded for further analysis. The ability of the GOS to quickly interpret and communicate mine hazards to personnel of varying technical ability should prove to be a useful tool in understanding ground control and thus improving mine safety.INTRODUCTION Computer-based data information centers that convey operating parameters and conditions are prevalent in modern underground mines. Today’s systems are popular in showing ventilation controls and monitoring equipment performance (Jyothi & Meena 2013). In ground control monitoring, Conover, Ross, and Bigby, 2010 have installed a wired telltale roof monitoring system that sends roof displacement data every ten minutes to a computer on the surface. The computer receives, stores, and displays the data in real time. Data can also be viewed remotely through a password protected internet connection. Additionally, an internet connection allowed for remote updates to the system which streamlined software development and maintenance by eliminating travel (Conover et al., 2010). Currently, no such system beyond Conover et al.’s design has been accomplished. The Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed to fill the void of real-time geotechnical monitoring in underground mines. A wide array of data will be transmitted wirelessly and broadcasted to on- and off-site mine personnel through the internet. The GOS will incorporate geotechnical data from roof deformation, borehole scratch testing, photogrammetry, and seismic monitoring into one interface, all while achieving permissibility for the use in gaseous mines. As a result, a comprehensive view of rock movement due to mining will be available. The overall purpose of the GOS is to deliver warnings; to ensure reliable data is relayed to personnel for the identification of potential ground failures, provide mine engineers information to design more stable mines, and assist with further geotechnical research."

Understanding the variability of sulfur and calorific value in coal seams is critical to planning mining operations and marketing the mined coal. In this study, statistical and geostatistical techniques were used to explore the underlying spatial trends present in a large coal deposit. Eight prediction models for the sulfur content of the coal seam were developed. Six of the models were created using geostatistical techniques, while the remaining two models were created using other techniques. The performance of each model was examined by conducting cross validation exercises. The results of the study showed that very pronounced trends and anisotropies were present in the sample data, which had to be accounted for in the modeling. The study found that a cokriging model using sulfur and ash is the best prediction model for predicting sulfur content in this coal reserve.

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 assays and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

This paper summarizes the process development behind the design of three different types of paste fill plants at operating Canadian hard rock mines. Each application has a unique paste backfill mix and process which utilizes the materials economically available to the mine site. The different plants produce paste fill composed of base metal tailings, a blend of recovered disposal pond tailings fines and alluvial sand, gold ore tailings, and a blend of gold ore tailings and alluvial sand. This work has led to the joint development by Inco and GL&V Ontario of the compaction storage mechanism for the de-watering of mill tailings to a paste consistency.

Optimal sizing of a ventilation shaft is a classical subject in mine ventilation economics.. The shaft size is optimized by minimizing the sum of shaft-construction and ventilation-power costs, or owning and operating costs. The length and air quantity of the shaft are held constant, and the location of the shaft, affecting its depth, and construction and ventilation power costs, is not considered (Hartman, 1961; Lambrechts, 1974; Wang et al., 1978). This paper proposes an approach by which the location and size for a new pair of shafts (intake and return shafts) are optimized for a coal-mine ventilation network. Specifically, the problem is to determine the location and size for a new pair of shafts, and the distribution of air between the new and old shafts so that the combined cost of shaft construction and ventilation power is minimized. The shaft length or depth corresponds to the height of overburden at any shaft location. To simplify the problem, the shaft locations will be limited to the line along the main or submain entries, and the connection entries at the shaft bottom neglected. In order to calculate the ventilation-power cost, the air power of the system should be determined. This in turn requires the calculations of the air quantity and pressure of each fan in the network, satisfying Kirchhoff's laws and Atkinson equation. After obtaining the air power, the cost calculation is straightforward. In the following, we shall assume that the resistances of all airways, and the quantity for each mining section, which is controlled by adjusting the air regulator, are all known. The resistances for the shafts are determined from the estimated friction factors, and shaft dimensions and lengths.
