"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."

An entirely new concept in the effective utilization of magnetic, energy has resulted in a major break-through in the design of magnetic separation equipment. One of the first applications of this concept has resulted in the development of a Permanent Magnetic Wet Drum Separator with strength .and operating characteristics equal to Electro Wet Drum Separators. Prior to this development when strength and adjustability were required, electro wet drums were specified even with all their drawbacks. The electros, by nature, are subject to coil failure or burnout, over-heating and loss of strength, high power consumption and generally high maintenance. Now the high strength and the adjustability, formerly the exclusive property of electros, has been engineered into permanent wet drum separators. These units combine maximum field strength in the separation zone with strength adjustment to suit changing conditions. Adjustment can be effected while the drum is in operation without stopping either the feed or the drum.

In its role of providing technology to promote the efficient use of minerals and mineral process waste, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research at: its Tuscaloosa Research Center to identify and develop high volume uses for phosphogypsum. Mixtures containing a maximum of 50 percent phosphogypsum, 6 to 10 percent lime, and the remainder fly ash had compressive strengths as high as 4,800 psi. The effects of the mounts of phosphogypsum, lime, and fly ash were investigated. Also, the effects of fly ash to lime ratios were studied.

Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the major disasters in coal mines, and it can have devastating effects on the normal mining and production activities of mines. This paper presents the field investigation, field measurement, data analysis, and formulation of fire-extinguishing measures conducted to extinguish the fire from a coal spontaneous combustion incident that occurred in a high-gas coal mine in China.

With the increase of new mine development in the past several years, many coal mines have decided to self- perform the design and construction for their slope development projects. The development process of determining the proper configuration is challenging, and a major economical consideration. Greenbrier Smokeless Minerals engineering staff and consultants, along with DSI/American Commercial, developed a support configuration that was best suited for their slope. The developmental process took into consideration the length of slope, depth of slope at the high-wall transition, economics of a single or multiple entries, waterproofing, stresses on the steel supports and lagging during the backfilling operation. This paper describes the developmental concept of using a single entry, side by side configuration, using steel ?Banjo String? supports with steel plank lagging, to develop a long term permanent installation in a cut and cover application.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has recently developed a rock mass classification system for evaluating the structural competency of bedded roof strata; the Coal Mine Roof Rating, or CMRR. When compiled with the companion Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, which is simple to learn and use, CMRR data are a useful tool with applications to longwall gate road pillar design, safety hazard mapping, and artificial roof support analysis. This paper demonstrates these applications under actual conditions found in current U.S. mining operations.

Feeders are used to provide a means of control for the withdrawal of bulk materials from storage units, such as bins, bunkers, silos and hoppers. This control function can only be performed properly as long as the bulk materials flow by gravity to the feeder in a uniform and uninterrupted fashion. A feeder can do many things, but it should never be considered a suction pump: During the past few years various papers have been written and presented on feeders and their application. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)* It is not the intent of this paper to cover the same ground, and the readers are therefore ad¬vised to consult the referenced publications for supplementary information. This paper will be confined to some specific design criteria of bin feeders, such as feeder load and power requirements. Special attention is given to the basic design criteria of vibratory feeders.

INTRODUCTION Uranium mining operations release radioactive materials into both air and water and generate large quantities of solid wastes containing low levels of radioactive materials. Solid wastes produced by mining operations remain on the surface at many inactive mining sites in the Western United States. These mining effluents may present a potential health and environmental hazard. Therefore, Congress, in Section 114(c) of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978, instructed the Administrator of EPA to prepare a report identifying the location and potential health, safety, and environmental hazards of uranium mine wastes and to recommend a program to eliminate these hazards. Several facts and limitations helped shape the method and approach of the EPA study. Little information on uranium mines was available; measurement information that was available on uranium mine wastes was frequently influenced (biased) by nearby uranium mills; time and resources did not permit comprehensive field studies to provide additional data; and there are inherent variations between uranium mines and sites that complicate generic assessments of mine wastes. To accommodate these facts, the EPA developed conceptual models of uranium mines and made health and environmental projections from them. The models were based upon available data from the literature, supplemented with information from discussions with persons inside and outside the EPA, and by doing several short-term field studies in Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. When necessary, conservative (maximizing) assumptions were employed. This paper presents a brief account of a part of the EPA study dealing with the potential health and environmental effects caused by active surface and underground uranium mines. Airborne contaminants are emphasized, although solid and liquid effluents are also included. Due to the limited space, only the methods and parameters used and the results of the assessments will be presented here. Anyone interested in the source of the data used and the development of the parameters should refer to the EPA report (Blanchard et al., 1981). The occurrence and emissions of stable elements were included in the EPA report, however, due to space limitations and their apparent small impact, except for possibly at some specific mines, only radioactive sources will be included in this presentation. MODEL URANIUM MINES The model surface mine was located in the South Powder River Basin of Wyoming and the model underground mine was located in the Ambrosia Lake area of New Mexico. These are the prevalent type mines in those areas. The model mines were based on the average production parameters of the 63 open pit mines and the 256 underground mines that were operating in the United States in 1978 (Department of Energy, 1979) and on a report of an extensive study of open pit mines in Wyoming (Nielson et al., 1979). Information contained in environmental impact statements and in reports from federal and state agencies was also used. Parameters for the model mines are listed in Table 1. The surface mining scenario is that 7 pits are opened in the 17-year mine life with overburden from each successively mined pit used to backfill a previously completed pit, resulting in an equivalent of one pit of overburden (2.4 year production) stored on the surface. No backfilling is assumed at the underground mine. Overburden or waste rock, ore, and sub-ore are separated into separate piles that are either rectangular in shape with length twice the width or in the shape of a frustum of a regular cone. Both shapes have 45 degree sloping sides. To account for bulking, the volume of the material comprising the piles was considered to be 25% greater than the volume of material removed from the ground. It was assumed that dewatering was required at both mine sites. Wastewater discharge rates at the surface and underground mines were assumed to be 3.0 and 2.0 cu m per min, respectively. SOURCE TERMS The following radioactive contaminants at active uranium mines were assessed in the EPA report: 1. Radioactive particulates in a) wind suspended dust from waste rock (overburden) pile, sub-ore pile, ore stockpile, b) suspended dust from mining activities (rock breakage, loading and unloading ore and wastes), and c) vehicular dust, 2. Rn-222 emanation from waste rock (overburden) pile, sub-ore pile, ore stockpile, and mining activities, 3. Rn-222 emanation from mine surface areas, and 4. Radionuclides in wastewater discharged to land surface. Estimated average annual dust emissions (item 1 above) from the model mines are listed in Table 2. Emission factors and the assumptions used to estimate these dust emissions are described in detail in the EPA report. Radioactive source terms were computed for each of the sources; dust emissions were multiplied by the concentrations listed in Table 1

While we are all aware of the need for reclamation of mine sites, few managers and engineers seem to be aware that good reclamation begins with the earliest plans for mining and processing of ores. Far too often the attitude that reclamation is an add-on to worry about at the end of the mining process dominates the thinking of mine engineers and management, A common result is that the reclamationist can be faced with mining and waste disposal designs that are nearly impossible to deal with effectively from an ecological perspective. Everyone of us has been victimized by the down time and maintainence cost that resulted from the purchase of an outwardly attractive, but poorly designed piece of equipment. When confronted by design defects in equipment, a distraught owner can always trade it in, call a consumer advocate, or follow up one of the "lemon laws" at either the federal or state level. A poorly designed mine for reclamation purposes usually cannot be treated either with ease or cost effectiveness. Good reclamation can be effectively prevented by the designs used when the mine was planned. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the experiences our firm has had with reclamation projects at mines in the Upper Midwest as these were influenced or controlled by mine design decisions. My aim is to sensitize mine planners and managers to planning processes they should consider, and hopefully use, early in the mining process to assure successful reclamation during and after mining. Many of the examples I will cite are from experience gained at the recently closed Jackson County Iron Company taconite operation at Black River Falls, Wisconsin. I am particularly grateful to Mr. Vern Metzger, mine manager at JCIC, for his unflagging support of good reclamation practices, employee training programs (which have included reclamation techniques), and his forebearance to put up with our group of ecologists. I realize that this was a time when there were significant internal and external pressures to cut all costs including reclamation efforts. The collaboration has been successful as you will soon see.

Technological change is continually affecting the mining industry and the many papers being presented at this meeting reflect this fact. I fully agree that miners must remain fully cognizant of technology that can change mining costs and therefore your competitive marketplace. Despite the embrace of new technology and effective mine management techniques, the mining enterprise may not realize increased net income if the structure of the minerals marketplace is not understood. An important segment of the marketing structure for minerals is transportation. Transportation costs per ton can be much greater than the mining costs per ton and may accordingly overshadow hard earned gains in productivity. Change is greatly affecting the transportation industry but the change is driven more by governmental policy than technology. Although some technological advances are occurring in the bulk transportation business, the changes I want to address arise from policy. Policy changes have come from legislation in the 1970's culminating with the Staggers Act of 1980 and ensuing Interstate Commerce Commission decisions.

Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

Overland belt conveyors often use vertically guided counterweight take-ups or horizontally tensioned carriages to maintain belt tension. In the event of belt or wire rope failure, these systems can release significant stored energy, creating high-impact forces that risk structural damage and personnel injury. This paper reviews current safety arresting technologies and presents a calculation methodology for estimating impact velocity, energy absorption requirements, and stroke limitations. Worked examples illustrate the selection process for appropriate arrestor types under different design constraints. The study emphasizes early integration of safety devices to minimize structural loads, avoid costly retrofits, and enhance operational reliability. Implementing robust arrestor systems improves safety and reduces downtime in bulk material handling environments.

A new moving cone optimizing technique will be introduced. In order to facilitate under- standing of the moving cone optimizer, a re- view of the principles of moving cone design technique is presented. A concept called the negative moving cone design technique is also introduced to help facilitate understanding of the moving cone optimizing algorithm. In the introduction to Subsection 3.3, the relationship of the mineral inventory modeling technique to the ultimate pit design optimization methods was reviewed. Five modeling techniques were described, and four mathematically provable optimizing methods discussed. The broad use of the regular 3D fixed block model was attributed, in part, to its applicability to automatic optimization methods of pit limit design such as the Lerchs-Grossman graph theory algorithm, and in part, to its systematic nature.

"Grout backfill strategy for a particular subsurface concrete tunnel (~4.9km long, 3.5m in diameter, carrying 20” gas pipeline) was based on achieving 1:100 slope of the fill in order to progressively fill the tunnel, in a series of 350m section. Grout rheology, particularly its non-Newtonian and thixotropic behavior, determines the final fill slope for given backfill strategy. The objective of this study was to simulate the two-phase grout mix backfill process using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and determine the slope of the fill to validate and optimize the backfill strategy. Three dimensional CFD study showed that for a 500m long tunnel section with a single injection point of grout, given its rheology, it will likely keep flowing without filling the 500m section height wise. Design optimization for filling was carried out using two dimensional studies to make the backfill process “slope independent” by incorporating a 2.5m high bulkhead at ~1,000m. INTRODUCTION As part of a gas field development a 20” onshore gas pipeline is required from the landfall site to the processing terminal some 8km inland. At the landfall site the gas pipeline is routed in a ~5km underground tunnel underneath a bay. For operational reasons and planning consents as well as to mitigate environmental impact based on an environmental impact study, once the gas pipeline and the associated services and spares have been installed, the subsurface gas tunnel will be fully grouted. There will be no permanent access to the tunnel after construction is completed and the site compounds have been reinstated once works are complete. One of the key requirements is that “full grouting of the tunnel” is desired. The grouting material used is a non-Newtonian and thixotropic fluid mixture of bentonite, cement, plasticizer, retarder/stabilizer and water. The tunnel is filled progressively in 350m sections using a combination of existing and new pipework assuming the grout rheology will yield a fill slope of 1:100 in a 350m section. The proposed grouting system used one pump at the grouting compound to pump the grout into the tunnel using the existing tunneling pipework. For the longer runs a second booster pump was used in series to pump the grout to its final discharge location. The filling process is controlled via a system of flow meters, pressure transmitters and a tunnel CCTV system."

I. INTRODUCTION Today, there are two conflicting trends facing the designer of the bulk material handling system. The first trend is the necessity to stockpile increasingly larger amounts of bulk material (coal, ore, stone etc.) as economically as possible. Fig. 1 illustrates such a typical large storage pile. The second trend is the increasing awareness of the ecological problems of today manifesting itself in a new concern over possible air pollution from storage pile surface particles. The conflict between these two trends can become dramatic when this bulk storage pile is located near a heavily populated area. Strong winds can easily create a severe local problem by blowing the particles from the pile surface toward residential and commercial areas, igniting a crisis in public relations. (2), (3), (4). To help define our combined subject and ecological culprit more accurately, Fig. 2 shows the commonly accepted size range of dust particles. A descrip¬tion of the present state-of-the-art of dust control for large storage piles is the intent of this paper. II. OPEN STORAGE PILE SYSTEMS - ALTERNATE CHOICES AND RELATIVE COSTS In discussing the open storage dust problem and possible solutions, one obvious question arises - what are the economics of placing large bulk storage under cover? Part or this answer will be found in Fig. 3 - an approximate unit capital cost comparison between several methods of storage. It will be noted that the cost curve(s) for the closed concrete silo storage illustrated in Fig. 4 is cheaper per ton at relatively small tonnage capacities, but as tonnage increases, the open pile storage unit cost (B) becomes more economical. Curve (T) covers the cost of open storage using the plow feeder arrangement shown in Fig. 5. A gravity draw-down pile with feeders at the base as shown in Fig. 6 represents yet another open storage choice.

NTRODUCTION In the mining industry, a "drill jumbo" is a drilling unit equipped with one or more rock drills and mounted on a mechanical conveyance. Jumbos range from single¬drill ring drills mounted on simple steel skids to sophisti¬cated multiple-drill units mounted on diesel engine powered carriers and equipped with automatic controls and sound-abatement cabs. Individual types of jumbos usually are designed for specific tasks such as fan drilling in sublevel caving operations. Some units, such as development jumbos, can be utilized for several functions in addition to their normal applications, e.g., for production drilling in room-and-pillar operations, stoping in cut-and-fill mining, etc. Mine operators can purchase individual components from manufacturers, assembling these components into a jumbo suitable for specific conditions. However, this requires that mine personnel have good engineering and mechanical abilities. Although manufacturers of jumbos maintain facilities for designing machines to meet con¬ditions created by new mining methods and unusual ap¬plications, the cost of the engineering and experimental work for new types of jumbos should be evaluated in terms of both costs and benefits; it may be advantageous to plan the mining operation so that existing and proven units can be utilized. GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA Since the operating conditions vary in underground mines, the design of a jumbo must be selected to cope with the individual characteristics of the mine. The necessary considerations include access space into the working areas, grades expected to be encountered, radii of the curves, ambient temperatures, the characteristics of the rock, the acidity or alkalinity (pH rating) of the mine water, etc. Access to Mine Workings The mine workings must be accessible to the selected jumbo. Frequently, a jumbo must be disassembled at least partially to pass through the mine shafts. There¬fore, a bolted construction allowing disassembly into pieces of suitable size and weight is desirable in most applications. Type of Undercarriage Generally, a crawler-type undercarriage should not be used in trackless mines having acidic mine water. The acidic water causes an electrolytic action between the individual crawler parts and causes rapid corrosion and early failures. Propulsion A two-wheel drive on a pneumatic-tired jumbo is marginal for grades exceeding 12%. A four-wheel drive unit with good weight distribution is capable of operat¬ing on grades of up to 35%. At least 30% of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) should be carried on the steering axle; otherwise, the steering tires may not have sufficient traction on loose road surfaces and may "plow" instead of steer. To assure stable operation in mines with steep grades, the height of the center of gravity of the jumbo should be considered. It should not make the unit prone to rolling over on the steep grades that may be encoun¬tered. Turning Ability In confined working areas, a skid-steering or crawler unit has the best maneuverability. An articulated carrier is preferable when base-rotated parallel booms are being utilized. A rigid-frame jumbo with automotive steering is compact and economical, having lower maintenance requirements than the other two types. However, the turning radius of a rigid-frame unit is wider than either the skid-steering or articulated units, and this wider turning radius may be detrimental in mines with narrow drifts. JUMBO COMPONENTS Rail Undercarriages A mine with a rail-transportation system generally utilizes drill jumbos that are mounted on rail-type under¬carriages. With a light load and good weight distribu¬tion, this carrier may consist of a simple two-axle four-wheel platform onto which the boom-mounting brackets are attached. As the depth of the round and the penetration rates increase, the weight of the equip¬ment installed on the chassis also increases. The greatest problem with a heavy overhung load is balancing the carrier; a three-boom unit may require a substantial amount of counterweighting to maintain an acceptable 70% to 30% axle-load balance. Although lengthening the wheelbase helps balance the unit, a long wheelbase increases the turning radius, often creating problems on curves and sometimes requiring a swivel truck-type chassis. A good rule of thumb for a simple four-wheel undercarriage is to maintain a wheelbase length to track gage-width ratio that does not exceed 2.5 to 1.0. For a larger ratio, a swivel truck should be utilized. Swing-out outriggers or roof jacks help keep a jumbo in place during the drilling cycle. Usually, a rail-mounted jumbo is not self-propelled. Instead, it is maneuvered into place by a locomotive. Occasionally, several headings are being advanced in close proximity, and a self-propelled jumbo is con¬venient. In electrified mines, such a jumbo utilizes conventional battery-powered traction gear; in dieselized mines, hydrostatic drive components offer good flexi¬bility. The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. The WEMCO® SmartCell™ flotation machine is a continuously-stirred tank reactor in which solids are suspended in water and are contacted with air. The reaction is particle flotation resulting in the separation of valuable material from gangue. The effects of several operating variables on the flows of water and air and on motor power were measured. A miniature magnetic flowmeter was installed in the draft tube that allowed measurement of the water flows into the rotor. This work has led to a better understanding of machine function which will lead to improved performance and better operation. General equations for optimization, design, and scale-up were inferred.
