Determining whether a railroad locomotive will skid under varying conditions is a fairly routine, pervasive problem. However, some of the equations provided are wrong, others are at best murky. All require correction or clarification. Skidding during heavy braking is a crucial safety problem, possibly resulting in loss of control and collision. It can also be an economic detriment, ruining wheels and tracks and, by inhibiting acceleration, causing reduced full-speed times. While skidding is less likely for rubber-tired equipment, a comparable problem exists for tractor-trailers operating on poor surfaces. The primary reference is to the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (pp. 14-11, Eqs. 7 and 8), which is taken as authoritative and normative (Brantner, 1973). Fundamentally, the physical weight of the locomotive can never be negative (-). However, based on this reference it can be negative on adverse grades, during braking (Eq. 7), and on favorable grades, whether accelerating or braking (Eq. 8). Additionally, it should be noted that the term rW should be Rw. To avoid having the locomotive weight turn out negative, "absolute value" brackets must enclose the right-hand expression of both equations. Also, the weight of locomotive can be greater than the right-hand side value introducing the common "greater than or equal to" symbol (>_). Common mineral resources (sand, gravel, crushed stone, etc.), which are so necessary for the construction of metropolitan areas, are rapidly being depleted or otherwise rendered unavailable in the very areas that need them most. However, the problem of planning for these resources involves a number of independent and dependent variables that must first be defined and related. Finally, a dollar value must be assigned where possible. Complex interrelationships between the variables and their dependence on outside factors has made mathematical "solution" of the problem of planning for non-renewable mineral resources difficult at the present time. Therefore, the use of computer simulation is suggested as a means by which this complex problem can be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to report on a continuing research program whose objectives are: (1) to delineate the factors involved in planning for the utilization of common mineral resources in urban-suburban environs; (2) to construct a planning model for these materials amenable to computer analysis, (3) evaluate the model by using test cases, and (4) perform a sensitivity analysis to determine the initial parameters in future planning for these materials.

A pilot scale study was performed to evaluate the potential for gravity concentration of gold from -13 mm (-1/2"), crushed ore from Ester Dome, Alaska. 9.04 tonnes (9.94 tons) of crushed ore were sampled and processed through a Pan-American jig -Wifley table pilot plant. Plant products were sampled for assay and material balance calculations. Gold recovery through one stage of jigging and two stages of tabling was 17.4% at a concentration ratio of 615:1. Concentrate grade was 766.3 g/tonne (22.4 oz/ton). The feed grade to the plant was calculated at 1.71 g/tonne (0.050z/ton). Jig tailings, primary table tailings and secondary table tailings grades were 1.44 g/tonne (0.042), 1.30 g/tonne (0.038), and 5.47 g/tonne (0.16 oz/ton) respectively. Significant, coarse, free milling gold values were shown to remain in the jig tailings. Concentrate mineralogy is discussed.

The mining complex, which the Mines Gaspé division of Noranda Mines Limited has operated in Murdochville since 1954, includes open pit and underground mines, two mills, one leaching plant and a smelter. The under- ground mining uses predominantly a large scale room and pillar method, rooms 15 m wide, 30 m high and 300 m long being common. Ore production is effected by 4.5 m3 front-end loaders and 32-tonne trucks powered respectively by 225 and 325 kW diesels. Daily dust and gas readings show that air quality can be maintained at an acceptable level with much less ventilation than that normally specified. This paper emphasizes the point that air requirements should be based on Air Quality Standards, thus allowing an operation to benefit from favourable conditions or from improvements such as exhaust treatment, fuel alteration, etc.

As duct-fan systems push the envelope of power, length and cost, their design calls for a more comprehensive technoeconomic analysis to ensure they deliver the expected results without failure and cost overrun. This work explores the numerous factors to include in the design of an extensive (semi-)rigid duct-fan system. Besides delivering a given airflow, the system must satisfy component limitations and power constraints during its lifetime. We evaluate the assumptions underlying the positioning of in-line booster fans in a long gapless duct-fan system and propose a strategy for specifying the location and blade pitch of successive booster fans to prevent system failure due to a partial vacuum.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity,' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

INTRODUCTION There has been considerable discussion in recent years of the strained relations between owners, engineers and contractors caused by the rapid increase in costly litigation in underground excavation due to construction claims. These time consuming claims are not to the best interests of the industry. It has been a conclusion of some of the concerned parties that there could be a substantial reduction in these claims if a mutual respect for each other's roles could be maintained along with a practical contractual arrangement for sharing the risks of the unforeseen costs inherent in the business. This paper will touch on the overall problem of these relationships, but confine the major discussion to the role of geology in claims and, in particular, changed conditions claims, since they form the base for the bulk of those involving geology. Geologists can make a major contribution to the reduction of these claims if their particular abilities are recognized and used properly. CLAIMS AND GEOLOGICAL RISKS The tunnel contractor is strictly bound by the contract he signs, and the risks he assumes thereby must be priced. The most important variable factor on which he must base his price is the geologic data provided and his interpretation of it. The management of mine tailings poses a complex range of potential risks, including physical risks, such as the risk of catastrophic failure of a tailings facility and chemical risks such as the risk of long-term leaching of contaminants into the downstream environment. If these risks materialize, they can lead to a wide range of impacts on people and the environment, including human fatalities and severe impacts on downstream ecosystems, and the costs of recovery borne by industry, communities, governments, and society as a whole can be immense. Tailings facility failures in Canada (2014), Brazil (2015 and 2019), South Africa (2022), and in other locations around the world underscore how high the stakes are when mines produce and manage tailings (WISE Uranium Project 2019). Understandably, many people do not trust the mining industry to manage tailings responsibly. As an industry, it is our responsibility to manage tailings in a manner that is responsible and strives to minimize harm associated with tailings management, including effectively managing both the physical and chemical risks associated with tailings. Standards have an important role to play in responsible tailings management by setting expectations for standards of care and providing a means to measure and report on performance. In jurisdictions with strong legal requirements for tailings management, standards play a complementary role, pushing performance improvements in areas that may be difficult or impossible to address in legal requirements. In jurisdictions where legal requirements are lagging, standards may represent the de facto leading practice and may be the primary tool to help ensure responsible tailings management. Implementation of standards can help companies demonstrate that tailings are being responsibly managed and help build trust and credibility. Most importantly though, standards are important tools to help ensure that the risks associated with tailings are reduced, and that remaining risks are effectively managed. However, we must recognize that conformance with standards can have a down-side – the proverbial two-edged sword. Having standards is vital but there is a risk that implementing standards becomes a “box checking” exercise, with ongoing conformance leading to complacency. We must not allow ourselves to fall into the trap of believing that, just because we are complying with applicable standards and laws, we are therefore doing our best, and that “it can’t happen to us.” In addition, if conformance becomes the goal and the standard does not have mechanisms to drive continual improvement, then once the standard is met, there may be no incentive to improve. The point of complying with standards is not to pass the test. The point is to manage tailings responsibly, prevent catastrophic failures, and minimize harm. The point is to do better, because we must do better. To do that, we need to strive not for conformance, but for excellence in tailings management, driven by continual improvement and a quest to do better.

Shield leg pressure data from all shields and shearer locationwith time stamp from a mechanized longwall face are monitored and recorded in a surface computer. These data contain random noise due to power failure, leakage of legs, bad sensor reading and other maintenance or geo-mechanical problems. An algorithm is developed to detect mining cycle parameters such as setting and final pressures and duration of the cycle from these data for the analysis of periodic roof weighting phenomena. The intensities and persistence of periodic roof weighting are the vital information to the mine management to take judicious decision on longwall operation. The paper presents details of the algorithm which identifies 96% of mining cycles from the noisy data belonging to consecutive 5 months or 410 m of face advancement. Based on this analysis, 2 types of periodic roof weighting phenomena are detected, namely, (i) normal type—having peak intensity of 75 to 90% of yield pressure, interval of occurrences of about 10 to 15 m with persistence of 3 to 4 m and (ii) severe type—peak intensity over 90% of yield pressure, interval of 25 to 40 m with persistence of over 10 m. It is envisaged that these phenomena have direct relationship with main roof thickness, its overhung length and material properties.

A residential metals abatement program has been underway in Butte for more than 20 years. More than 1,350 yard and attic cleanups were completed by the end of 2018; most triggered by lead. While the focus is on remediation of residential soil and house dust, the program also includes a blood lead monitoring program with identification and abatement of additional sources of exposure for children with elevated blood lead levels (BLLs). As specified in the remediation program, studies are being conducted every 5 years to assess BLL data collected from Butte children. The first two studies have evaluated over 6,000 BLLs from 2003 through 2017 and evaluated trends over this time period, by Butte neighborhood, and as compared to areas outside of Butte. These studies showed that rates of elevated BLLs (i.e., those above 5 µg/dL) in Butte children have declined dramatically since 2002 but have been declining much more slowly since 2011. Improved rates of confirmation testing are needed to verify the rates of elevated BLLs. While the RMAP likely has contributed to these declines in BLLs the magnitude of impact cannot be quantified.

INTRODUCTION The process of predicting ground condition with exactitude and of ascertaining appropriate ground control measures is pertinent to each and every excavation. The control and support of soil and/ or rock during and subsequent to excavation is essential in order to overcome or avoid excessive movement, maintain stability or preserve integrity of the excavation, handle or prevent excessive water intrusion or hydrostatic pressure build up, and produce an excavation that is safe and suitable for its intended purpose. The design of support systems has primarily been, until recently, based upon experience and empirical or semiempirical guidelines, which do not lend themselves to thorough analytical calculations giving rise to the desired degree of confidence in design of such systems and consequently, several, if not a majority of support systems, no doubt, are overdesigned. The primary objective of this paper is, therefore, to briefly outline engineering considerations leading towards the design of ground control systems for near vertical excavations extending to shallow depths in metamorphic rock formations. Several engineering considerations including the selection of temporary support systems, technical aspects of design, and the sequence as well as details of construction, are briefly outlined. Leaching titaniferous magnetite concentrate with alkali solution of high concentration under high temperature and high pressure was utilized to improve the grade of iron in iron concentrate and the grade of TiO2 in titanium tailings. The titaniferous magnetite concentrate in use contained 12.67% TiO2 and 54.01% Fe. The thermodynamics of the possible reactions and the kinetics of leaching process were analyzed. It was found that decomposing FeTiO3 with NaOH aqueous solution could be carried out spontaneously and the reaction rate was mainly controlled by internal diffusion. The effects of water usage, alkali concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the leaching procedure were inspected, and the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. After NaOH leaching and magnetic separation, the concentrate, with Fe purity of 65.98% and Fe recovery of 82.46%, and the tailings, with TiO2 purity of 32.09% and TiO2 recovery of 80.79%, were obtained, respectively.

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be effectively controlled by utilizing steel wire rope net systems, either as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting, permitting kinetic energy dissipation, yet providing high strength and consequently low maintenance. A review of the design considerations involved with these systems, as well as a review of several mine and non-mine installations is presented with the hope that the information may contribute to the safety against the dangers of rockfall and other mine hazards in active and abandoned mines.

Introduction Coal extraction by continuous miners (CM) is currently the most common underground method in the US industry and accounts for slightly more than two-thirds of the nation's deep mining production (National Coal Association, 1987). Even if longwall mining should become more commonplace, it can proceed only after ventilation and access entries have been driven by CMs. Since an area of concern continues to be the effects of the dust generated on the health of mineworkers, this paper discusses the relationship between the elemental compositon of mining-generated airborne dust sampled from the immediate ventilation return of a CM and laboratory-generated dust derived from channel samples taken from the mines. There are several potential contributions of this type of study to the coal mining industry. First, after more fundamental knowledge of the causes of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is learned, the laboratory-generated respirable dust could be used to identify a potentially hazardous coal seam. Also, this study could possibly aid in understanding the fundamental causes of CWP by producing mining-simulated samples of coal dust that could be used in epidemiological studies. Further, assuming that there is no difference in the elemental composition of a drill-core sample and a channel sample from the same location, a mining company could predict a new mine's respirable dust elemental composition in the immediate ventilation return by using exploratory drill core samples of the roof, coal, and floor rock to prepare the laboratory dust. Ventilation engineers could then use engineering design and control measures during premine planning to reduce the incidence and severity of CWP by better ventilating the potentially hazardous coal seam. If this proper planning prevented any future changes to the ventilation equipment and mine design, much time and money could be saved. Scope of work To investigate the variability of the chemical characteris tics of respirable dust, airborne dust samples from eight underground coal mines located in the eastern and midwestern United States were collected with eight-stage Sierra Model 298 Marple cascade impactors, as well as 25 channel samples of mined material. Each channel sample was removed from the middle of the coal face before mining occurred. Sampling of the mining-generated dust was conducted by Lee (1986) by sampling the entire working sections, primarily for characterization purposes, to obtain information on the locational variability of dust characteristics. Research performed for this study used the elemental analyses of the mining-generated dusts he sampled in the immediate ventilation returns of CMs. The procedure that was used to produce the laboratory-generated respirable dust was based on the Hardgrove grindability test since it reflects the pulverizing characteristics of coal. This test was chosen for several additional reasons. First, it is repeatable and reproducible. A consistent amount of input energy is used as well as a specified size range of feed material to be crushed (the channel samples). Second, it is thought to generate secondary dust in a way similar to that of the crushing and grinding of the coal and rock as they pass through the arc-shaped cutting path of the CM's cutter head. The potential effect on dust generation by this secondary grinding mechanism may be at least as much as that produced by primary fragmentation, which is dust produced by the cutting action of the bit against the coal or rock (Roepke, 1984). Finally, the Hardgrove grindability test is well known and is used in the coal industry to guide mineral processing engineers in estimating the capacity of mills used to grind coal. One hypothesis of dust researchers in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust is that the elemental as well as the physical characteristics of coal mine dust will make a difference in the incidence and severity of CWP. Coal mine dust is generated not only from coal, but also from any rock partings contained within the seam or any roof or floor material mined with the coal. Thus, coal mine dust may not have the same elemental characteristics as the coal being mined. Given that hypothesis, mixtures proportional to each thickness mined of roof, coal, and floor rock derived from the channel samples of the face areas from which the respirable dusts were generated by the CMs were used to produce the feed material that was pulverized in the Hardgrove machine.

This paper describes a dynamic short-nun mineral supply model that incorporates secondary processing, transportation, mineral market structure, and direct mining and milling costs. The method employed is network flow programming. Empirical tests utilizing domestic phosphate industry data have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. In the model, nodes represent physical locations such as a mine or port. Arcs represent either a process, such as mining, or movement, such as rail or barge transport. Each arc is described by lower or minims allowable flow bounds, upper or maximum possible flow bands, and variable cost. Mines and previous period inventories represent potential supply. The model is optimized via a cost minimizing algorithm, which attempts to fulfill stated total demand at the minimum possible system cost given the arc constraints. An optimal solution of the model will predict production patterns by mineral property for each prespecified level of demand. A mineral property is defined as a separate accounting entity such as a mine. The results of serial optimizations are used to construct the short-run supply curve. Dynamic policy analysis can be conducted by altering the arc constraints.

INTRODUCTION There are three fronts on which development efforts are being concentrated to extend the application domain of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), which is potentially very large - Assessment of a reliable prediction method, including machine-rock interaction and geological characterisation, so that the boring system can be designed properly and the costs remain in the predicted range for each given tunnel project. - Development of lighter, more flexible and more controllable machines to be applied in shorter, deeper tunnels or roadways, such as required in mining. - Reduction of cutter and machine costs when excavating hard rocks or difficult grounds, in developing improved tool materials, cutting geometries and tunnelling systems. The above three lines of development have a common, critical requirement: to have a reliable set of design rules to optimize the machine specifications from the knowledge of rock and geological parameters and working requirements. This optimization can only be done if a model sufficiently sophisticated is made available, able to take into account the numerous factors influencing the TBM advance , and being interactive enough to achieve the optimization.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and nonfatal injuries that occur in mining in the United States. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2010 through 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84 percent involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action — such as using fall protection — would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

"The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10-m (33-ft) finished diameter, 490-m (1,600-ft) long, hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90- ft) diameter and 92-m (300-ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six, high-head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steellined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir.The construction of the tunnel system has been divided into two contracts. The gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining was completed in September 2014. The remaining and undergoing construction include the tunnel connections to the reservoir and the Mainstream Tunnel and installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders. This article focuses on the live connection of the McCook Main Tunnel to the Mainstream Tunnel that was initiated in November 2014 and will continue through the seasonal drier weather conditions in Chicago approximately from October through April. Chicago TARP systemThe MWRD has been addressing combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flooding in Chicagoland since the late 1960s and formally adopted the tunnel and reservoir plan in 1972 to protect the region’s most precious drinking water supply, Lake Michigan. Phase I of TARP, which included construction of 175 km (109 miles) of deep storage and conveyance tunnels with diameters up to 10 m (33 ft), was completed in 2006. In addition to protection of Lake Michigan from CSO discharges, Phase I resulted in substantial improvements in surface water quality as well as the quality of life for lake and riverfront communities in Chicago. Water quality improvements and flooding mitigation will be further enhanced as Phase II reservoirs are placed in service, including the three large reservoir systems, McCook, Thornton and Majewski (Fig. 1).The McCook Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the TARP system. Today's mining industry faces many challenges. Perhaps none is more important than the challenge of improving our industry's public image. Opinion polls document public concern for a clean and safe environment. As part of that public, the mining industry must share that goal. The public is now the most powerful environmental group in society. And the public wants the environment to be protected. In May 1989, Edgar S. Woolard, chairman of DuPont, spoke to the American Chamber of Commerce. He said that industry's continued existence "requires that we excel in environmental performance and that we enjoy the non-objection - indeed even the support of the people and governments in the societies where we operate." In effect, Woolard called for "corporate environmentalism." He defined it as an "attitude and a performance commitment that places environmental stewardship fully in line with public desires and expectations." Environmentalism is no longer a fringe activity, but rather is now clearly in the mainstream. How can we meet public expectations and improve our image as an industry? One of the best ways is to plan, design and operate our mine facilities with environmental responsibility and social concern. The Mineral Hill Mine provides a good case study of a facility that has made this commitment. The project used an inter-disciplinary, multiagency task force, citizen advisory groups and engineering and design considerations. As a result, Mineral Hill achieved cost-effective permitting. At the same time, the operation demonstrated effective "corporate environmentalism."
