Lime and limestone-based SO2 scrubbing processes have demonstrated reasonably good success in removing low concentrations of SO2 from flue gases. While most of the operating problems experienced in the early days of scrubbing have been worked out, problems usually increase and removal efficiency drops with increased amounts of SO2 present in the gas stream. In order to overcome these difficulties, yet still taking advantage of lime and limestone as the lowest cost neutralizing agents, a host of so-called double- alkali systems were developed. These processes take advantage of cations such as Na+ and NH4+ capable of forming highly water soluble bases or basic salts, such as hydroxide, carbonate or sulfite, which having been neutralized or acidified by the absorbed SO2 can be regenerated with a lower cost base such as lime.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

"The proliferation of unconventional gas well development in the Northern Appalachian coalfields has raised a number of mine safety concerns. Unconventional wells, which extract gas from deep shale formations, are characterized by gas volumes and pressures that are significantly higher than those observed at many conventional wells. The gas is composed largely of methane as well as other hydrocarbons. Hundreds of planned and actively producing wells penetrate protective coal pillars or barriers within active mine boundaries, including chain pillars located between longwall panels. Gas released from a well damaged by mining-induced ground movements could pose a risk to miners by flowing into the mine atmosphere. The mining-induced ground movements that may cause well damage include conventional subsidence, non-conventional subsidence (e.g., bedding plane slip), pillar failure, and floor instability. This paper describes the known risk factors for each of the four failure mechanisms. It includes a framework that can guide the risk assessment process when mining takes place near gas or oil wells.INTRODUCTIONSouthwestern Pennsylvania has served for centuries as a producer of coal, oil, and natural gas. Coal mines were first developed in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam in the 1760s, with the first recorded mine in 1761 being the Fort Pitt Mine (Edmunds, 2002). Natural gas was introduced to the region when the Haymaker Well in Murrysville, Pennsylvania experienced a blowout on November 3, 1878. Although it was originally drilled prospecting for oil, it produced an estimated 30 million cubic feet per day of natural gas. Without well controls or pipeline infrastructure in place, it burst into flames and lit the night sky for over a year. Soon after, the Penn Fuel Company continued development of the Murrysville gas field and is credited with making Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the first major city in the U.S. to have natural gas supplied for home and industrial uses. “Natural gas is king in Pittsburgh,” proclaimed an October 18, 1885, article in the New York Times headlined “Value of Natural Gas, Its Use Clarifies the Atmosphere at Pittsburgh” (AOGHS, 2018). By the early 1900s, coal, oil, and natural gas production had reached the southern extents of Pennsylvania in Greene County. The county had first produced oil in 1886, and shortly after began producing natural gas in 1890. By 1906, over 1,300 wells had been drilled (Stone and Clapp, 1906)."

As part of its goal of helping maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines is evaluating alternative technologies to treat oxidized taconites. Since process control is an essential element in the application of these process technologies, research was performed with a prototype monitoring system. A Californium-252 neutron source and a thermal neutron capture- gamma ray spectra analysis method was utilized to measure the amount of iron and the percent solids in the process slurries. The concentrate and tailing streams in a 410-kilogram-per-hour (900- pound-per-hour) pilot plant employing a selective flocculation and cationic flotation process were monitored. The results obtained showed that the thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reaction can be used to provide process control parameters.

Rio Algom Corporation of Wilmington, Delaware is a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlas Alloys Inc., an Ohio Corporation, which in turn is 100% owned by Rio Algom Mines Limited of Toronto, Canada. Rio Algom is controlled by the Rio Tinto Zinc Corporation of London, England, which has subsidiaries and affiliated operations throughout the world. Rio Algom geologists first became interested in this Utah pro- perty in 1966, after preliminary drilling had indicated that a known orebody close to the surface appeared to continue on the dorm thrust side of a major local fault, known as the Lisbon fault. Accordingly, in 1968, arrangements were made to acquire what was known as the "Humeca Option", a total of 2,573 acres located in San Juan county in south-east Utah, 35 miles south-east of the town of Moab.

The design of solvent extraction plants has been generally based on the assumption of steady operating conditions in both the settler and the mixers. Recent experience with both large and small plants has shown that this is not the case. Mixer transients include start up aqueous locking and partial phase separation in secondary mixers. Both of these lead to either reduced plant capacity or overflow of upstream mixers. Analysis of the hydraulic pressure profiles has generated new design methods to eliminate the effects of the partial or complete phase separation. Further, changes to the method of specification and selection of both primary and secondary mixers have been made to eliminate the onset of partial separation during operation. Observation of settler operation has shown that it is also a dynamic process, even under ‘steady state’ conditions. Four different transient phenomena have been identified that lead to internal circulating flows, poor disengagement of fine secondary haze, and erratic and high entrainment levels in the discharges. A first approximation analysis has shown that there are significant pressure differentials within settlers and these change along the length and with phase separation rates. A technique to control the effects of these transients has been developed which allows plant performance to be improved beyond ‘standard’ expectations. The design and selection of the settler internals is described.

Outokumpu Mintec started development of the pressure filter in 1991, and the first unit was delivered to Tara Mines Ltd. Ireland in 1992. The filter replaced a conventional disc filter and a thermal dryer. The replacement of the thermal dryer has improved both environmental and working conditions. The filter is currently dewatering 80,000 tons per year of lead concentrate, producing a cake with less than 6 wt % residual moisture.

The rare earth elements (REE) which include the 15 lanthanide elements (Z = 57 through 71) and yttrium (Z = 39) are so called because the elements were originally isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as oxides from rare minerals. Most REE are not as uncommon in nature as the name implies. Cerium, the most abundant REE (Table 1), comprises more of the earth's crust than copper or lead. Many REE are more common than tin and molyb¬denum, and all but promethium are more common than silver or mercury (Taylor, 1964). Promethium (Z = 61) is best known as an artificial element, but has been reported in very minute quantities in natural materials. Lanthanide elements with low atomic numbers are generally more abundant in the earth's crust than those with high atomic numbers. In addition, lanthanide elements with even atomic numbers are two to seven times more abundant than adjacent lan¬thanides (Table 1) with odd atomic numbers. The lanthanide elements traditionally have been divided into two groups: the light rare earths (LREE), lanthanum through eu¬ropium (Z = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earths (HREE), gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Although yttrium is the lightest REE, it is usually grouped with the HREE to which it is chemically and physically similar. The REE are lithophile elements (elements enriched in the earth's crust) that invariably occur together naturally because all are trivalent (except for Ce+4 and Eu+2 in some environments) and have similar ionic radii. Increase in atomic number in the lanthanide group is accompanied by addition of electrons to an inner level rather than the outer shell. Consequently, there is no change in valence with change in atomic number, and the lanthanide elements all fall into the same cell of the periodic table. The chemical and physical differences that do exist within the REE group are caused by small differences in ionic radius, and generally result in segre¬gation of REE into deposits enriched in either light lanthanides or heavy lanthanides plus yttrium. The relative abundance of individual lanthanide elements has been found useful in the modelling of rock-forming processes. Comparisons are generally made using a logarithmic plot of lanthanide abundances normalized to abundances in chondritic (stony) meteorites. The use of this method eliminates the abundance vari¬ation between lanthanides of odd and even atomic number, and allows determination of the extent of fractionation between the lanthanides because such fractionation is not considered to have taken place during chondrite formation. The method is also useful because chondrites are thought to be compositionally similar to the original earth's mantle. Europium anomalies (positive or negative departures of europium from chondrite-normalized plots) have been found to be particularly effective for petrogenetic modelling. REE were originally produced in minor amounts from small deposits in granite pegmatite, the geologic environment in which they were discovered. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, REE came mainly from placer deposits. With the exception of the most abundant lanthanide el¬ements (cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium), individual REE were not commercially available until the 1940s. Since 1965, most of the world's REE have come from two hard rock deposits: Mountain Pass, United States, and Bayan Obo, China. GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF REE DEPOSITS More than 70% of the world's REE raw materials come from three countries: China, the United States, and Australia. China emerged as a major producer of REE raw materials during the 1980s, while Australian and United States market share decreased dramatically (Fig. 1). Table 2 gives recent annual production figures along with estimated reserves by country, and Fig. 2 shows loca¬tions of significant REE mining. MINERALS THAT CONTAIN REE Although REE comprise significant amounts of many minerals, almost all production has come from less than ten minerals. Table 3 lists minerals that have yielded REE commercially or have po¬tential for production in the future. Extraction from a potentially economic REE resource is strongly dependant on its REE miner¬alogy. Minerals that are easily broken down, such as bastnasite, are more desirable than those that are difficult to dissociate, such as allanite. In general, producing deposits contain REE-bearing min¬erals that are relatively easy to concentrate because of coarse grain size or other attributes. Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."

The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

This Paper will deal with Bucketwheel Suction Dredging and its particular relationship to mining applications. There will be comparisons with other methods of suction dredging and descriptions of two recent bucketwheel installations in the mining area. The Directory of World Dredging Fleets published in the `larch 1984 edition of World Dredging magazine shows that there are about 1.000 conventional Cutterhead Dredges listed throughout the world with 289 in the United States. There are 242 Bucketline Dredges listed throughout the world of which only 6 are in the United States. These figures are not completely accurate because several units are known to the author that are not on the list and, of course, there may be others.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. G.M. Philip and D.F. Watson The article cited above reflects the difficulty that is often encountered in interpreting different aspects of kriging. Baafi et al. write : "Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense." Their solution to this particular problem is to constrain the kriged estimates to data values that have positive weights, i.e., reduce the subset size contributing to the estimation. As Journel (1986, p. 133) has already observed, "Negative weights are no evil." Indeed, they are an ineluctable result of the Lagrangian multipliers in the system of simultaneous equations. The fact that data distant from the estimation point may be given negative weights simply means that the influence of such distant values must be negated because their influence is contradictory to closer values (as illustrated by Baafi et al. in their Figs. 3 and 4). Of course negative kriging weights applied to distant grade values will not in themselves induce negative grade at some central interpolation point. Negative grade values, rather, seem to be a particular artifact of automatic methods of estimation involving accu¬mulations (Philip and Watson, 1985a, 1985b, 1987b). The elimination of negative weights, suggested by Baafi et al., is likely to exacerbate a quite different problem of kriging and piecewise spline interpolation discussed elsewhere (Philip and Watson, 1987a). In interpolating large data sets of scattered observations, changing local subsets or neighborhoods must be selected automatically. Because of the mathematical formulation of kriging and spline interpolation, discontinuities then occur between closely-spaced estimation points as the subset used in the estimation changes. If this subset is reduced in number and size, the discontinuities will be amplified and more common. ? Kim Before replying to the comments by Philip and Watson, it is desirable to establish the original perspective of our paper, which was intended primarily for the practitioners of mining who possess a working knowledge of ordinary kriging. The paper tried to convey the following practical points: (1) there are circumstances in which one observes negative weights, (2) illustration of circumstances under which one can expect negative weights, (3) should one obtain a negative estimated grade, one can resort to elimination of negative weights using the technique outlined in the paper, and (4) one could normally select only the first layer of surrounding assays to estimate the block grade. Under such a perspective, most of the comments by Philip and Watson are irrelevant and misdirected. For example, the practitioners do not find it difficult to "interpret" the results of ordinary kriging, as evidenced by the fact that they have been using the results for nearly a decade. Nor are the practitioners concerned with discontinuities in estimated block grades due to changing neighborhood of assays during kriging. What matters to the practitioners is the fact that kriging does provide the best estimate among all the estimation tools available to them as of today. ?

The two most stringent parameters for in place fracturing of rock are the lack of any initial void space in the rock which to expand into and the ability to gain access only through drill holes. These two restrictions have proven so severe that as of today the only proven techniques for efficient fracturing are the contained nuclear detonation and hydrofracing. Both of these methods have highly developed technologies for their application. Hydrofracing has been a standard oil field practice for two decades, and the experience gained from a couple hundred underground nuclear detonations has resulted in a thorough understanding of the phenomenology of cavity and chimney formation. What is still lacking is a practical method to create a suit- able degree of fracturing for those ore bodies which do not meet the application criteria for either the nuclear explosion or hydrofracing. Nuclear applications must be restricted to thick ore deposits so as to take advantage of chimney collapse height--preferable in excess of 200 feet thick. Other requirements such as ground shock, containment, and radioactive contamination further reduce the number of sites that prudently can be selected.

Precast concrete segmental lining systems have been gaining widespread use in seismically active areas and a single-pass version of such a system has been developed for use on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit (SVRT) Project in San Jose, California. The response of tunnel linings to seismic shaking is often predicted using engineering judgment, elastic closed-form solutions and numerical modeling. Such analyses generally assume a continuous structural system and hence do not explicitly model the behavior of the jointed segmental lining. A number of analyses were performed to predict radial and circumferential joint behavior during seismic ovaling and wave propagation. These analyses included a complex, three-dimensional finite element based ground-structure interaction model that incorporates inelastic constitutive soil behavior, cracked concrete properties and no-tension, frictional segment joint surfaces. The paper discusses the results of the analyses and provides guidelines for the design of precast systems in zones of high seismicity.

Tround International Inc. is developing rock excavation and drilling devices which utilize a simple patented mechanism for firing frangible projectiles. This system launches a salvo of three projectiles with every shot in automatic sequence. Studies conducted by Physics International Inc. have demonstrated that firing projectiles into hard rock such as granite creates fragmentation which is much faster and cheaper than conventional drilling and blasting. The Tround salvo approach enhances this further by a controlled stresswave interaction created by a slight time difference during impact of the individual projectiles. The University of Maryland is conducting additional studies to optimize these parameters.

The practice of roof bolting in world-wide mining activities is very well known, having been used extensively for over 50 years. The theory of roof bolting, however, is extremely complicated, and only recently have investigators attempted to explain the theory. Discussions of the mechanics involved usually originate with actual experience gained in the use of roof bolts. The use of roof bolting in mines has grown dramatically during the period after World War II. Other scientific techniques have emerged in mining research in the same period. Included in these techniques is the study of rock mechanics, which has now developed into an impressive research effort. Various means of analysis have been utilized in rock mechanics, most of which reduce rock to an isotropic, homogeneous medium that could be easily analyzed. Because of the inherent nature of rock, direct research methods frequently are not certain to provide satisfactory results, whereas indirect methods must idealize a given set of conditions in order to be useful. One of the indirect research methods is the photoelastic technique, the theory of which is widely known and needs no elaboration. This technique has been used extensively to examine the state of stress around underground openings of various shapes in certain types of strata, and under various configurations (1,2,3,4,5). Much of the theory used now in the design of underground openings is based on photoelastic evaluation. Unless rigorously applied, how- ever, the photoelastic technique is at best a qualitative means of evaluation. It is useful, however, for unusual examples which can be more or less easily analyzed to obtain the overall state of stress which could not be determined by other means. Little work has been done in the photoelastic analysis of rock bolting, mainly because direct research techniques have proven useful.
