The state of Arizona produced 253,276.2 metric tons (279,000 st) of crude gypsum during 1986. This represents approximately 1.7% of the total U.S. production. Four mines provided Arizona's gypsum, three of these mines are in the San Pedro Valley. The uses of the gypsum produced in Arizona are for manufacture of cement, agricultural uses, and wallboard manufacture. The gypsum is used as a retarder in the manufacture of Portland cement. The use in agriculture is treatment of alkali soils to allow water penetration. Other deposits in the San Pedro Valley have production potential, providing there is sufficient market for additional wallboard. The author completed an evaluation of one property earlier this year.

INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some general principles and procedures that a rock mechanics engineer can use to arrive at a logical design for the size, shape, and spacings of underground openings in various types of com¬petent rock formations. Rock formations can be clas¬sified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes, provided the necessary input data are available regarding the geology of the site, the physical properties of the rock, the in-situ stress field in the rock, and the general geometry of the underground openings. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a rock classification system based upon these concepts and found it to be useful for design purposes (Obert, et al., 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). This classification sys¬tem is given in Table 1; however, an extra column has been added to the original classification to indicate the appropriate design techniques for each rock class. In this classification system, two main classes of rock are considered: competent rock and incompetent rock. Competent Rock Competent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geological characteristics, is capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of any structural support except that provided by unmined rock in the form of pillars and side walls, etc. Roof bolts and small random props which support only local loose rock are not considered structural supports. Competent rock is further subdivided into three ad¬ditional categories-massive, laminated, and jointed¬ which are defined as follows: Massive Rock: Massive rock is a rock formation where the spacing between mechanical defects such as joints, partings, or faults is equal to or greater than the critical dimensions of openings, or where the strength of the bond across these mechanical defects is com¬parable to the rock strength. Laminated Rock: Laminated rock is a rock forma¬tion divided by approximately parallel planes of weak¬ness into lamina whose thicknesses are small compared to critical dimensions of openings and where the bond between the lamina is weak compared to the rock strength. Elastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties will permit the use of elastic theory to predict strains and displacements from applied stresses. Inelastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties are such that strains and displacements are a strong function of time as well as applied stress. Incompetent Rock Incompetent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geologic characteristics, is not capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of additional structural support in the form of linings, steel sets, or systems of props. This classification system for rock depends not only on the mechanical and geologic characteristics of the rock but on the size of openings and their depth be¬low the surface. For example, many competent rocks at shallow depths for small stress fields could become inelastic rock at greater depths and larger stress fields, or competent massive rock for small openings could be¬come laminated or jointed rock for larger openings. Thus, to classify rock for design purposes requires a knowledge of the geologic properties of the rock mass, the physical properties of the rock, the general size of the openings to be mined, and the average range of the in-situ stress field to be encountered. To design underground openings and structures in rock, it is necessary to use criteria of failure for rock under various stress conditions, and to use safety factors to allow for differences between laboratory and in-situ strength properties of rock and to account for errors in¬troduced by the various assumptions made in the design process. Criteria of failure based on maximum stresses have been found to give reliable results in practice. Thus, it is assumed that rock will fail in tension when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the rock as determined by a standard modulus of rupture test on samples of rock core. If the tensile stresses in rock are small, then it is assumed that the rock will fail at a value of compressive stress equal to the compressive strength of the rock as determined by standard uniaxial compres¬sive strength tests on samples of rock core. Advances in the recovery of gold from heap leaching are being made daily, but of all the systems vital to the maximum recovery of gold from a leach pile, none is more important than the methods used to construct the pile in preparation for the leaching operation. The technology described in this paper illustrates the latest systems developed to minimize compaction in the pile during its construction and reduce the cost of placement of ore on the pile. The Florida Canyon Mine of Pegasus is evaluated in detail to show reasons for its high degree of success to date.

Had the blank on the Abstract form been sufficiently spacious a more appropriate title for this paper would be: Neogene Tectonism, Magmatic Activity and Hydrothermal Precious Metal Mineralization in Anatolian Turkey; an Analog with the Basin and Range Province of the Western U.S.? Like the alternative title no thing in Turkey is simple. Its history is long and convolute; its culture fascinating; its metallogeny diverse and its geology very complex. This paper will focus only on the geology of western' Anatolia and the precious metal potential of this third of Turkey. The argument is in the article but to save the reader time and suspense I'll put my conclusions up front- the potential is great and the possibilities exciting.

Differential settlement on reclaimed land presents a particular problem when the land is to be used for row crops. The poorly drained depressions caused by differential settlement restrict crop yield resulting in additional costs to alleviate the problem. Potentially more serious is the threat of failing to meet target yields due to settlement: related reductions. Because the mechanism by which the problem occurs is not well understood, a physical model study was conducted to investigate the importance of several factors. Although the importance of such factors as the relative amounts of rock and unconsolidated overburden in the undisturbed condition and the size distribution of rock fragments were considered, the analysis concentrated on the causes of settlement in the reconstructed soil layer above the rock spoil.

The Windy Craggy polymetallic massive sulphide deposit is located in the extreme northwest corner of British Columbia 40 miles west of the Haines Highway, 90 miles northwest of the port of Haines Alaska. The physical setting is mountainous country but with few peaks rising above 2,000 metres elevation, in contrast to the spectacular mountainous terrain to the north and south in Kluane and Glacier Bay Parks respectively. Valleys are classically U-shaped with incised V-shaped bottoms. The upper portions are still occupied by glaciers, which in the Windy Craggy area are documented as retreating at a rapid rate -in the case of the Tats Glacier of the order of 1% of its mass per year. The outcrops around Windy Craggy show a north-easterly dipping sequence of Mesozoic limey sediments and volcanics being the western limb of a north northwesterly trending syncline. Northeasterly cross folding provides a few complications. The flanks of the syncline have been buttressed by intrusive bodies of granitic affinity.

The rate of beryllium dissolution from a low-grade ore was studied in sulfuric acid solutions. The effect of stirring speed, sulfuric acid concentration, particle size and temperature on the rate of dissolution of beryllium was established. The results of the study showed that the dissolution rate is independent of stirring speed within the range of 250-1000 rpm but depends on 1/2 power of the sulfuric acid concentration. The dissolution rate increases exponentially with decrease in particle size and the maximum attainable rate of extraction with respect to particle size is 6.6 x 10 mol dm min. The apparent activation energy (^E) for the dissolution reaction is 54.4 kJ/mol (13.0 kcal/mol). Based on this magnitude of the activation energy, it is concluded that a surface chemical reaction is the rate limiting step for the temperature range (70° -100°C) investigated.

Phosphate mining in Florida generates approximately 100,000 tons/day of phosphatic clays (slime). This waste slime not only creates one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also causes tremendous loss of P2O5. About 20-30% of the phosphate mined end up in phosphatic clays. Recovering the phosphate from this waste is difficult for two main reasons: 1) the slime is extremely fine in size, and 2) clay minerals account for almost half of the material. A half dozen dispersants were evaluated for keeping the clay minerals suspended for subsequent separation from non-clay minerals by either settling or cycloning. The separation efficiency and economics are discussed.

The paper discusses the legislative and practical approach adopted to problems of management of environment in relation to coal mining in a very sensitive area of the south coast of New South Wales. The environmental problems are complicated in this area due to multiple and very often conflicting land usages. The environmental approach in relation to water quality maintenance, noise control and air quality is discussed and methods adopted meet stringent requirements. Requirements of New South Wales Regulations on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) are described.

An important part of process control engineering is the implementation of the basic control system design through commissioning to routine operation. This is a period when basic concepts can be reviewed and improvements either implemented or recorded for application in future systems. The experience of commissioning the process control systems in the Homer City coal cleaning plant are described and discussed. The current level of operating control performance in individual sections and the overall system are also reported and discussed.

"The wear phenomenon in TBM machines is not a simple issue, as many parameters are playing an important role on the consumption of the tools during a tunnel excavation. The action of the wear due to the contact with the soil can occur on the excavation tools, on the cutterhead, in the excavating chamber and on the screw conveyor. The test developed at the Laboratory “Tunnelling and Underground Space Center” of the Politecnico di Torino is aimed to reproduce the interaction between the tools and the excavated material, simulating the excavation conditions in terms of soil conditioning and water content. The test, which is not standardized, is studied to evaluate the wear in a global point of view. The present work starts by testing the influence of the use of chemical agents during the conditioning phase on the drop of the wear phenomenon, in terms of metal weight loss. 1. INTRODUCTION The wear phenomenon of the excavation tools used in TBM tunneling machines is playing recently a major role in the design stage of full-section tunnels in both soils and rocks. Concerning EPB excavation technology, the main issue regarding productivity is the wear of its components (Peila et al.,2012), which increases the so called dead time in the whole process. The friction generated between the components and the ground causes the consumption of the tools and other metallic components in contact with the ground, described as primary and secondary wear by Nielsen et al. (2006a). This leads to downtime, with risky and complicated maintenance operations (Peila and Schulkins, 2009), as occurred in recent tunneling works in Liguria (Italy). The study of this argument in granular soils is very delicate, as it encloses not only the properties of the excavation tools, but also the characteristics of the ground to be excavated (hardness, mineralogy composition, shape and dimension of the particles and moisture content). The penetration mechanism is based on the scraping of the ground, by mean of cutting tools, with its consequent consumption. Concerning the rocks, the excavation principle is characterized by crushing the rock mass matrix by applying high compressive stresses through cutting disks. In such a way, to avoid frequent downtimes and their consequent economic losses, it is very important to study this subject and therefore understand and forecast the durability of the components, in order to try to maximize the productivity of the machine by reducing the frequency of maintenance stoppings."

A brief description of the mining method and ventilation system of the San Manuel Mine?s first presented; this is necessary to an understanding of the heat problem and cooling system. The problem of heat at San Manuel is discussed. Charts and graphs showing the relationships between ambient surface air and underground temperature conditions are given. A history of attempts to cool air at San Manuel is presented, starting with the first refrigeration type air coolers which were used in development headings, and followed by the underground water chillers that were used in conjunction with cooling coils. Goals for design of a centralized cooling system with ultimate heat rejection through surface cooling towers are presented. The problems found with using the centralized system in main cooling coils are discussed. Plans for modification of the centralized system as utilized is the summer of 1987 are given, along with results obtained and problems with the system. Plans for subsequent modifications are presented.

The lignites of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas are typically described as muitiseam deposits which contain quantities of day and sand in thin lenses or in admixture with the fuel itself. These materials are often included in the run-of-mine fuel and can have very adverse effects in the end use. Since May of 1982 the Dow Chemical Co. has operated a pilot plant for the beneficiation of lignites. This facility has successfully removed sand, clays and petrified wood from the lignite producing a fuel comparable to or better than the selectively harvested run-of-mine materials. The design, operation and results from this plant were presented by J. H. Everitt at the 1984 Coal Technology Conference.

Slurry rheology affects autogenous grinding performance by changing the rock's breakage characteristics. In this study pilot scale batch autogenous grinding was carried out to observe the effect of viscosity on the breakage characteristics of the rocks (the media), and on the overall specific energy consumption. Clay/fines content, and temperature of the initial charge, were varied to alter the viscosity of the slurry. Results showed that at higher slurry viscosity, rocks became more difficult to break, resulting in an overall increase in the specific energy consumption of the mill. Also, it was observed that viscosity had a significant effect on the amount of critical size material present in the grinding circuit, where the critical size material is the material which is too large to be effectively ground in the mill, and too fine to act as grinding media.

The mechanisms of chalcopyrite oxidation in alkaline solutions have been studied using cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance spectroscopy techniques. Analysis of the impedance spectra using equivalent circuit models has made it possible to suggest layerwise growth of surface films. From the value of equivalent circuit parameters, properties of the surface layers are inferred. These properties change substantially with the change in oxygen and/or collector concentration in solution and give rise to changes In contact angle and flotation response. In agreement with prior investigations, the present study shows that flotation recoveries alone cannot be used to determine the effect of collector on flotation of chalcopyrite. The rate of flotation is a more sensitive parameter to determine the role of collector on floatability of chalcopyrite.

Rockburst is defined as a sudden and violent explosion of rock on the surface of a rock excavation. Rockburst has been regarded as the least understood and most feared hazard problem for underground rock excavations. Traditionally, rockbursts were classified into the strain, pillar, and fault-slip categories. However, rockbursts are also known to occur at stress levels well below the rock yield strength, in mines where the rock is far from brittle, or without the presence of geological discontinuities. A plausible explanation of rockbursts is buckling, which has been identified as one of the main mechanisms for rockbursts. It is observed that rockbursts are often induced by dynamic loadings (pulses) from adjacent blasting. Therefore, the present paper studies the effect of pulse shape and amplitude on pillar rockbursts induced by dynamic loadings from blasting using the method of numerical analysis. The governing equation of a pillar’s motion is set up and the mechanism of pillar rockbursts is investigated through a practical example. The results show that it is not the shape of a pulse but the impact energy to decide the occurrence of pillar rockbursts. If all other parameters remain the same, pillar rockbursts are more likely to occur when the pulse duration is longer. The parametric resonance and the perturbation of dynamic loadings are also found to play an important role in the occurrence of rockbursts. These insights would provide invaluable clues about the mechanism and for better control of pillar rockbursts.

During the past decade we have witnessed spectacular improvements in productivity of open pit mining equipment. Thousand-horsepower engines, 200-ton trucks and 15-yard electric shovels, which such a short time ago were just dreams on a drawing board, are now realities. More productive equipment and metal shortages have encouraged increased production at existing mines and the development of new larger tonnage operations. Operators and engineers have been able to employ computers and various other types of automation to "stay on top of things". The mine geologist, however, is merely faced with a bigger and more rapidly changing pit to pick in. Keeping geologic information current in these mines presents entirely new problems to mine geological staffs. To obtain adequate geologic information on the developing orebody requires enlargement of the staff to share the work load or revision of methods in keeping with the times. The former has the disadvantage of loss of the comprehensive knowledge of the pit that a chief geologist likes to have, not to mention management's usual lack of enthusiasm for force increases.

INTRODUCTION In the region of Zurich several of the Swiss Interstate Highways meet and have to be linked to form a continuous network. The subalpine glacial topography with hills, ridges and lakes requires the construction of many tunnels (Figure 1). The Milchbuck Tunnel forms part of the inner arterial highway system of the city of Zurich. It passes underneath the ridge separating the Limmat and Glatt valleys. In its final configuration the tunnel will consist of two parallel three-lane tunnels (Figure 2). For the time being only one tunnel is constructed. This tunnel will be operated with two outbound (climbing) lanes and a single inbound (descending) lane (Figure 3). The owner, the Canton of Zurich, awarded the contract for the construction to a joint venture with the following three contractors: Locher & Cie AG (leader), Prader AG, A. Brunner's Erben, all located in Zurich. The actual freezing was performed by subcontractor Philipp Holzmann AG, Mannheim, West Germany. Electrowatt Engineering Services Ltd, Zurich, was design engineer and performed the construction supervision.

Saudi Arabia’s mineral potential offers development target that compliment the national effort to diversify the income of this oil and gas economic based nation. Ma’aden, a joint stock company with paid-up capital of US$1 billion, has from its inception in 1997, actively developed in-house engineering and management skills to transform the Arabian shield’s mineral potential into such real projects. Gold mine operating facilities of 100,000 oz/yr underground and 50,000 oz/yr open pit are de-scribed, as well as 3 targets, two of which are underdevelopment; Al Hajar (3,000 tpd at 2.5 gpt Au)and Al Amar (5,000 tpd at 20 gpt Au). Emphasis is also on exploitation of phosphate rock and down-stream fertilizer products, based on the Kingdom’s107,000 sq. km. northern basin geological reserve. Al Jalamid, the prime target, represents 216 million tonnes of these P2O5 reserves. Saudis and expatriates, together, lead international engineering companies and contractors operating and developing these facilities.
