The Apex property, mined in the early Twentieth Century for direct shipping copper, also contains gallium and germanium in iron oxide minerals. In 1982, Musto Explorations Limited began an exploration program to define reserves. A metallurgical process was developed, and a production decision was reached in late 1983. This text describes the process development and design. The Apex mine, located near St. George in Southwestern Utah is owned by St. George Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Musto Explorations of Vancouver, B.C. Musto acquired the property in early 1982. A pilot plant was operated by Hazen Research, Inc., Golden, CO later in 1982. In late 1983 sufficient information had been developed for St. George to proceed with the project. The final process design was prepared by G. M. Swinkels of Vancouver, consultant to Musto, and Hazen Research. Process engineering was done by Hazen Research, and St. George acted as its own contractor. Commissioning of the plant began in October 1985.

When OSHA came into existence in 1970, it adopted national consensus standards to improve safety and health conditions in work places. Coke oven emissions, which are proven to cause cancer and respiratory diseases, were regulated by the coal tar pitch volatile standard, adopted from the 1969 edition of the Threshold Limit Values for Airborne Contaminants by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The coal tar pitch standard, based upon the benzene soluble fraction of total particulates, limits the personal exposure to 200 micrograms of the benzene soluble fractions of total particulate per cubic meter of air. This standard can be classified as a performance standard because only general limits are set which allows the employer to choose for themselves the means to comply. Both the United Steelworkers of America and the American Iron and Steel Institute petitioned the Secretary of Labor to write a new standard for coke oven missions, each thinking the coal tar pitch standard unsatisfactory.

For the past four years, the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky has conducted a validation study of the CFD Fluent code, by comparing its results against mining-related benchmark experimental data provided by NIOSH?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. This particular study is dedicated to the effect of machine-mounted dust scrubbers on the performance of face ventilation systems using extended-cut mining with a blowing curtain.

Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. This paper is an extension of previous work evaluating a new extractant, LIX®-64, for recovery of copper from dilute acidic solutions. Large scale pilot plant operations have confirmed the technical and economic feasibility of the process and, with minor exceptions, scale up parameters obtained by previous laboratory work. Operating problems encountered in the pilot plants are discussed. Design parameters for-scale-up to commercial plants are presented and discussed along with a revised capital cost estimate. The future pilot program is discussed, including minor design changes and the effect of entrained organic on dump leaching efficiency.

The New York Trap Rock Corporation has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. The company produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, with a total annual production amounting to 6 million tons. The crushed stone is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey and Long island areas by water transportation. There are daily deliveries of approximately 35 scowloads to the market area. Its customers are contractors with ready-mixed concrete and asphalt plants located on the water, where the aggregate is unloaded for its ultimate use. For a number of years capital equipment was replaced only when the current operating machinery was no longer serviceable, or when' a need was apparent for a different type of equipment. There was no particular regard for efficiency or for operating and maintenance costs. Such lack of system often resulted in the emergency purchase of equipment which was later found to be unsuitable for the job. A few years ago it became apparent that a systematic procedure was necessary. After evaluation of several systems, an individualized plan was evolved from the basic pattern developed by the Machinery and Allied Products Institute. The system adopted by New York Trap Rock has proved wholly satisfactory.

A four-mile length of interceptor sewer tunnel in Manhattan has finished sizes ranging from 10'6" to 14'6" horseshoe. Mixed face conditions were anticipated in three areas and encountered in five. All were short but since the tunnel lies well below the water table and failures would involve important utilities, major structures and human lives, great care had to be exercized in choosing a construc¬tion method. Chemical consolidation was selected as the best approach with compressed air working as a backup system. Initially grouting was accomplished from within the tunnel, but treatment from the surface was more successful and was later adopted. The soils consisted largely of impermeable weak silts and it was found possible to inhibit access of water to this material so that it could be controlled by breasting within the tunnel without loss of stability. It is concluded that in the interlayered permeable and impermeable soils encountered, chemical grouting would successfully stabilize the working face. INTRODUCTION An interceptor sewer is currently under construction along the entire length of the west side of Manhattan. When complete, the tunnel will intercept and divert to a treatment plant (also under construction) a daily flow in excess of 200 million gallons per day. Many states are considering the need to establish or modify policy relating to the disposal of coal ash. One of the primary concerns is the impact of leachate from the ash disposal sites upon groundwater and nearby bodies of surface water. A detailed site investigation was conducted at a coal ash disposal facility associated with a power generation station. The disposal site is situated alongside a major river. Monitoring wells were installed and soil samples were taken for characterization. Groundwater models were used to simulate migration of leachate from the disposal site toward the river. Such models could be used potentially to verify regulatory compliance. This paper addresses the validation and adaptability of these models to this case and their usefulness as possible tools to be used in future environmental audits.

Strip mining in the domestic coal industry is contributing a greater proportion of overall production than at any time in the past. U. S. Bureau of Mimes statistics show that the percentage of total production mined in 1958 by stripping methods in- creased to more than 30 pct, up from 22 pct in 1951. The tendency to favor strip and open pit mining exists in other mining activities, but such trends are not as clearly outlined as in the coal industry. Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. A depth of 50 to 60 ft of overburden was once considered to be about the maximum amount that could be handled economically, Today, a depth of 80 to 100 ft is frequently taken into consideration for simple overcasting operations (i.e., excavating over- burden and dumping it in the spoil position where it remains indefinitely). Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. A depth of 50 to 60 ft of overburden was once considered to be about the maximum amount that could be handled economically, Today, a depth of 80 to 100 ft is frequently taken into consideration for simple overcasting operations (i.e., excavating overburden and dumping it in the spoil position where it remains indefinitely).

The Coffee Creek lode gold discoveries are located in the White Gold district (Dawson Range), west-central Yukon, 130 km south of Dawson City and 30 km south of the Golden Saddle gold deposit (Figure 1). Extensive structurally-controlled gold mineralization has been discovered during the 2010 and 2011 exploration drilling campaigns, highlighting this part of the Dawson Range as a significant emerging gold district. [ ] In this contribution we review the geological framework and describe the mineralization styles and metal signatures observed to date on the Coffee project. The main Coffee area is underlain by a 15 km by 4 km geochemical footprint, characterized by discrete linear gold-in-soil anomalies that correspond to various mineralized corridors. Of several mineralized areas tested in the past two drill seasons by diamond core and reverse-circulation (RC) drilling, we focus on the Supremo, Double Double, Latte and Kona zones; areas with the most information obtained from drilling thus far (Table 1; Figure 2).

This paper describes the laboratory study which permitted an exploration of high grinding ball consumption in the secondary open circuit wet grinding mills at the Sidbec-Normines plant, Port Cartier, Québec. Corrosion undoubtedly exists but is of minor importance. Abrasion resulting from the physical nature of the company's iron concentrate is the main reason for the high ball wear. It was found that at least 30% reduction in ball consumption is possible by decreasing attrition grinding through the use of lifters in the mill. At the industrial level this would entail more lifters and/or higher lifters in the mill linings.

St. Peter sandstone is very different from the minerals and rocks that have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, the geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstones were investigated through a comprehensive research program, which included uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, thin section, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens used for the uniaxial and triaxial tests were specially prepared because of the highly friable nature of the St. Peter sandstone. Thin section, XRD and SEM were utilized to examine the effect of the microstructure of the St. Peter sandstones on its strength characteristics.

Slurry diaphragm walls are commonly used as both temporary excavation support walls, and permanent structural walls, for circular shafts and long rectangular structures (such as underground subway stations); however, they are not commonly used for more compact rectangular or square shafts. In these instances, a second wall is typically cast inside the slurry walls to form the permanent structure. This paper discusses the approach used on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in California to analyze these compact rectangular types of structures for static and seismic loading, and to determine whether or not slurry walls can be confidently used as both the temporary and permanent walls for two tunnel ventilation shafts.

The leaching of heaps or sub-marginal waste ore dumps as it is practiced throughout the Southwest as well as other parts of the world, is the major method of secondary recovery of copper. In 1970, twenty percent of all domestic copper was produced by dump leaching operations (l). In recent years, this method has been successfully extended on a limited scale, for the recovery of uranium from low-grade ores (2). It is inevitable that this technique will be increasingly employed in metal production to satisfy the insatiable demand of our mineral based society. Although dump and heap leaching has been used effectively for some time (3) , its application has been more of an art than a science. Therefore, it is essential that we learn about the important factors and parameters affecting this versatile process so that we may make increasing use of this technique in the future. The dump or heap leaching process encompasses the preparation of ore for-subsequent inplace leaching, the flow of solutions and ionic species through porous rock masses, the leaching of minerals with inexpensive and, if possible, regenerable lixiviants under prevailing conditions of the inplace environment, and the recovery of metals from the pregnant liquors. It is evident that this comprehensive scope of dump or heap leaching falls under the realm of interdisciplinary science and engineering requiring the application of the principles of physics, mineral engineering, hydrology, computer modeling, operations research, economics, and allied disciplines. The Rio Blanco Oil Shale Company completed a modified in situ oil shale retorting demonstration at its Tract C-a Lease in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwestern Colorado during the spring of 1982. This demonstration was the first MIS project with shafts rather than adits for access to the mining operation, and it involved several potential hazards which required that particular attention be paid to mine ventilation. Methane was first encountered during shaft sinking and ultimately resulted in the mine being classified gassy by MSHA. Secondly, we encountered hydrogen sulfide in association with the ground water, and this proved to be a more persistent problem than did the methane. Thirdly, in order to burn the underground retorts, it was necessary to provide for potential leakage of retort gases and to obtain a modification to the MSHA standard which forbids fires under- ground. This modification had a significant effect on the ultimate ventilation procedures at Tract C-a. An extensive under- ground air monitoring program was included in the ventilation system.

The Cu-Au flotation cleaning circuit at Freeport Indonesia consists of three stages: two flotation column stages, in series, followed by one stage of mechanical cells. Concentrate from both column stages is combined as final concentrate. The mechanical cell stage has two parallel rows of seven Wemco 500's. The Wemco concentrate is recycled to feed of the second column stage and Wemco tails report to final tailings. This paper examines cleaner circuit performance, focusing on size-by-size performance of the individual stages and the individual mineral groups -copper sulfides, gold and in sol minerals. The recovery mechanisms of insol minerals are examined.

The Symons Cone Crusher was invented by Edgar B. Symons in 1923. It was quickly accepted as a superior secondary and tertiary crusher. Nordberg manufactured crushers for the Symons Brothers Co. and in 1928 acquired the Symons Cone business. Since then, the Symons cone has become the standard of the Mining Industry. This is due to the basic rugged design and Nordberg's continued efforts to modernize and upgrade the crusher design over the years. In 1930, the Heavy Duty model was introduced with a 225 kW (300 HP) rating. Then in 1931 the Short Head version was developed to handle finer crushing applications. In 1950, the 7 Ft. XHD design was produced which provided higher crushing force capabilities for harder ores and for smaller product size requirements. Finally, in 1978, the 7 Ft Super Heavy Duty design was created to expand the power rating to 500 HP and to further increase the crushing force limits. The first 7 Ft. Super Heavy Duty crushers were delivered to Bougainville Copper Ltd. in 1978 for the production of primary ball mill feed in a three stage crushing plant with the third stage in closed circuit. The product size was 80% minus 6.35 mm (1/4 in).

Blast design methods generally deal with end points or limits of design such as spacing, burden, stemming depth, etc. Even cratering design deals with limits defined as a function of energy decay to a limit. Although this crater method provides a better method than trial and error judgment it does not take into consideration the distribution of energy throughout the material to be blasted. This paper deals with a method of examining this distribution with the aid of a computer and how changes in blast design affect this distribution. First I would like to explain the equation used to develop the energy summations throughout the blast. As shown in Figure I a series of drill holes are drilled to various depths starting by placing the explosive charge on the surface and then at various depths until a sufficient depth of hole is reached to exceed the ability of the explosive energy effect to reach the surface of the ground. All volumes of explosive are the same, all holes contain the same explosive and the drill hole diameter is the same.

Economically important heavy minerals have been studied in the sediments of offshore Alabama and Mississippi. Sandy samples have been collected from a 200 square mile area from Dauphin to Horn Islands. The minerals concentrate in sediments under 10-35 feet of water and may reach 2.4% by weight. The distribution of total heavies is related to the hydrodynamics of offshore Alabama-Mississippi; the greatest concentrations are in the Gulf where the longshore current is diverted from its westerly flow. Preliminary observations indicate that the distribution of individual minerals can be correlated with wave energy, particle size, specific gravity, and morphology of the mineral grains. The coarser, lighter minerals--kyanite, sillimanite and staurolite--are concentrated in relatively low energy areas in the Mississippi Sound and at the end of Dauphin Island in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each is 34.5%, 6.0% and 43.2%, respectively, of the heavy minerals. The smaller, more denseminerals--ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon and monazite--are concentrated in high energy areas in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each, respectively, is 42.0%, 5.9%, 9.652, 10.7% and 1.3% of the heavy minerals. On the basis of a minimum concentration of 1% heavy minerals, two areas have been identified and the total amounts of different minerals have been calculated to a depth of 25 feet of sediment. The data are preliminary and in no way indicate recoverable reserves, but they do show that on the order of 20 million tons of heavies exist. These deposits should be termed "indicated resources".

Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.
