Ventilation of gas mines keeps necessary sanitation and hygienic conditions for labor in mines and increases the safety by dilution and removal of hazardous and dangerous gases in accordance with the safety rules. Several different concepts exist at the present time to design mine ventilation control systems. But technical ideas have been developed inadequately and technological solutions have not been investigated experimentally enough to build a serviceable system. This paper presents a new concept of high- efficiency mine ventilation process control system (MVPCS). The methods of modern system engineering (Kalman, 1969) are used to establish its functional and algorithmic structure. A three level hierarchical principle of system building is considered.

NIOSH has developed an automated PC-based seismic event (induced earthquake) monitoring, system for use in mine ground control studies. The distribution and coordination of data acquisition and processing functions across a local area network is a central feature of the system. Mine-wide installations utilize multiple, autonomous seismic networks located both underground and on the surface. Seismic event locations, magnitude estimates, and other processed data are distributed for display and analysis on network nodes both underground and in the offices of mine engineers and managers. This paper describes the system's design philosophy, hardware and software components, examples of installations, and a few observational results.

The length of Alaska's coastline, combined with the presence of a significant number of fjords, encourages consideration of marine disposal of mine tailings. However, the decision-making process is complex because various factors govern the viability of the submarine tailings disposal (STD) option. An expert system, called the Submarine Tailings Disposal Expert System (STADES), was developed to help mining project planners explore the feasibility of STD. A review of the existing literature, supplemented by engineering recommendations, on the various aspects of the marine disposal of tailings formed the knowledge base for the expert system. The shell used to develop the expert system was LEVELS.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation on the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

The basic principle of this separation method was already defined in the middle of the nineteenth century. However, a change over for the treatment of minerals has followed from the construction of proper machines i.e. airjigs and airtables as late as in the twenties and thirties of this century. The main application of this technology was subsequently found in coal processing and reached quite a great dimension in the two following decades. The number of applications of this method in mineral dressing plants decreased rapidly and has almost vanished in the fifties in favour of wet concentration procedures. It has been for a long period as long as up to the eighties that no more consideration was taken for applying dry gravity separation in the field of mineral processing also due to the successful introduction of flotation. Due to the fact that labour cost was increasing remarkably within the past period after the end of World War II also the economic conditions in the agricultural sector became more though. As a result there came up a great demand for harvesting machines. Since agricultural products can only be processed by dry methods in a prevailing number, highly developed machines were introduced for the dry processing of food and feed stuff.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. The mining sector, which is important in terms of raw-material and energy supply, is seen as a sector with high number of fatal accidents compared to other sectors. In this century of heightened occupational health and safety awareness, it is important to review past accident statistics and analyze current deficiencies using the information in inventory. Although there are many studies assessing occupational accidents occurring in the mining sector, there are few studies using the nonparametric linear programming method. There are many input and output parameters related to occupational health and safety. Nonparametric linear programming method has been found to be useful because it provides simultaneous evaluation of these input-output parameters, does not require functional form in the analyses and provides guidance on the improvement needed by the related parameter. However, this method analyzes data using a single period of time and does not take into account any changes in efficiency over time. In the literature, there is no study in which the change of occupational accidents occurring in mining and even other sectors over time is examined and the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) is used. Within the scope of the present study, the aim was to examine the change of occupational accidents occurring in Western Lignite Corp. in Turkey, where underground and surface production methods are applied, between 2005 and 2018. It is the first time MPI is used to examine the change of occupational accidents over time. The DEAP 2.1 computer program written by Coelli [1] was used in the solution of the models [2].

Various coal mine robots (CMRs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are implemented to explore unknown mines for improving the safety and efficiency of mining. It is challenging for CMRs and UAVs to achieve accurate positioning due to the absence of the Global Positioning System (GPS), poor lighting conditions, and similar geometric features in complex mine scenes. LiDAR-based localization and mapping methods are more accurate than others, while long-time running in large-scale scenarios will introduce nonnegligible cumulative errors. This study presents a semantic-aided Li- DAR simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with loop closure, which leverages the uniqueness of mine intersection structure to establish stable semantic loop closure. Specifically, we propose a semantic intersection descriptor of translation and rotation invariance, which encodes 3D point clouds of the same intersection from different positions and viewpoints into a unified image. By using the semantic descriptor, we can construct a constant loop constraint when the same intersection is revisited from different directions to reduce cumulative drift. We provide experimental validation using large data sets collected in two large underground mines, namely, a simulated Edgar mine deployed in ROS Gazebo and a public underground mine data set provided by ETH. Experimental results show that the proposed method has higher localization accuracy and outperforms the existing LiDAR-based SLAM strategies.

Dimension stone is a natural stone (granite, marble, limestone, sandstone and slate) that can be quarried, cut and shaped to conform to acceptable industry standards for size, consistency and durability. There are numerous outlets for the finished product in exterior and interior architectural and design applications. A continued growth market is with residential usage— particularly in new, upscale construction. This has become a competitive market between domestic producers and lower cost imported products. These imported products have become available at many of the building supply retail outlets and have increased the use of stone in residential construction and renovation. The traditional architectural application of dimension stone is tied to commercial and institutional building construction trends and market. There has been a noticeable increased usage of stone in the Sun Belt. This stone is usually supplied by local fabricating shops. It is used in the exterior and interior of shopping malls. This market generally uses local stone sources. It has increased the demand for sandstone, limestone and quartzite in this region of the country.

The provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei (and most recently Fujian) were the prime exporters of barite during this period. Guangdong and Shandong were exporters too but not major participants. These are all primarily agricultural areas so there existed a sufficient labor force willing to work in the mines to supplement their income from farming. During the early years, barite export pushed the existing transportation systems in these provinces to operational capacity. The mines from which this barite is extracted are located about 250 to 1,400 kilometers from the sea ports. Transportation of the ore from the mines to the ports follows a net-work that includes trucking to various rail-heads where it is then shipped via freight trains to ports for loading into seagoing vessels. in some instances, the barite travels by truck or train to the Yangtze River where it is then barged to an ocean port.

The combined 76th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 64th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 8and 9, 2003, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Stakeholders, Partners in Change.” The meeting included four keynote speakers, technical presentations and a tradeshow. Engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. Reflecting the theme of the meeting, all agreed that the mine owners, the government, the community and the employees are all “stakeholders.” They must be “partners in change” for the iron ore mining industry to survive in the region. Compared with past meetings, where improved technology was the primary focus, this year the focus was on the dramatic restructuring of the entire industry. As noted by several of the speakers, “This time, the change is not in technology.”

Better understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of dissolution can benefit several industrial processes. For example, iron can be leached from clays, which can be further used as a raw material in the ceramic industry. Another important application is the regeneration of ceramic filter media, which are used in the dewatering of iron ores. Dissolution of iron oxides in mixtures of acids is fairly uncommon and a less well-understood phenomenon, but it can result in a more efficient process. This work also shows that the determination of dissolution mechanisms and kinetics is not straightforward in different acid systems.

I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the prestigious Gaudin Award. Frankly, I find myself amazed to be included in the company of those outstanding individuals who have previously received this recognition. I am humbly honored to receive this award from an industrial research group. Gaudin was an internationally respected leader of mineral processing. His research contributions widely covered the whole spectrum of mineral processing science and technology, including comminution, size distribution, electrostatics, magnetics, thickening and, especially, the development of flotation theory and application. In his later career, he increased his emphasis on hydrometallurgical technology. In fact, one of his most notable practical contributions was in the development of leaching and ion exchange purification of uranium from low-grade ores. Gaudin catalyzed the trend in mineral processing toward engineering science for a better understanding of process mechanisms and kinetics. He said that those working in academic fields should have an underlying responsibility to the industry they represent. This imposed on him the objective of seeking out research areas that had some relevance to industry's problems. He said, "research without an audience cannot survive." Gaudin performed a most vital service, both in the areas of research in which he was actively involved and through his less-direct influence on current research by his many former students and their students in turn. Interestingly, Gaudin's strength has influenced Newmont Mining Corp. His favorite student was Plato Malozemoff. He had a long and distinguished career with Newmont, beginning as staff engineer in 1945, serving as Newmont's president for more than 30 years and as chairman of the company for 20 years. Newmont's greatest growth occurred during his leadership. Another one of Gaudin's graduate students from Montana School of Mines, Oscar F. Tangel, joined Newmont in 1967. He was a vice president of research and development until 1986. In their efforts, Newmont built a research group, developing the technologies of exploration, geophysics and metallurgy. The Newmont technical facility is named in honor of Malozamoff as "a leader in the development and implementation of new technologies." The mining industry is facing very difficult times, especially in the metals industry. Most metal prices have declined and are still not stable. Most domestic mining companies have largely done away with in-house research and development. Many are reluctant to invest in technology development for which there is not an immediate need. The metal mining industries are focusing on reducing operating costs to survive. Newmont is in the same situation. I appreciate that Newmont's management believes in the importance of research and technology and the impact technology has on the company's value. At Newmont, technology development involves working in the area of applied research. The connections from academic fundamental research to applied research and finally to process development and implementation are very important to develop a new technology. Fundamental research is our foundation, our guidance, giving us direction, providing the principal and mechanism and understanding why it works. Understanding the why will lead to further innovative development. Applied research needs to find the approach to reality, how it works, how to make it better and how to commercialize it. Process development and implementation needs a strong leadership, requires long-term commitment, makes improvements in practical engineering and finally develops an economically favorable process. Implementation is the most important stage in making research a reality. Each stage needs to give feedback to the other stages. Problems need to be understood and solved. Otherwise, the new technology will go nowhere. Simplicity of operation is a key of success in any plant. Necessity is the

Electromagnetic-based proximity detection systems (PDSs) are utilized on mining machinery to protect workers from being pinned or struck. These systems generate magnetic fields covering the space around a machine, and a miner-wearable component (MWC) detects the field. The PDS determines the distance of miners relative to the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density in the magnetic field. This information is used to establish warning and shutdown zones around the machine. Maintaining a stable magnetic field is essential for system accuracy. However, components used to generate magnetic fields can be influenced by temperature changes. Depending on ventilation conditions and seasonal alternation, a PDS can be subject to significant temperature fluctuation. To better understand and quantify this phenomenon, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an experimental apparatus to study the influence of temperature on magnetic field generator circuits used in PDSs. Results from the study show that the electric current through a generator can be influenced by both ambient and internal temperatures, modifying the magnetic field that is produced. These findings show that temperature can significantly influence the ability of PDSs, used in underground coal mines, to accurately determine a worker’s position in relation to mining machine.

Editor's note: This is the first of two articles on maintenance. Part two, "Effective maintenance downsizing techniques," will appear in the October issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Most mine managers are aware that the cost of maintenance rarely goes down unless work is done less often and with fewer people. Fewer people translates into downsizing and seldom means making maintenance more efficient. Even so, mines that have struggled unsuccessfully to improve maintenance and are now pressed to reduce maintenance costs may opt for downsizing. On the other hand, mines with an immediate need to reduce costs may be forced to downsize because they cannot wait for needed improvements to take effect. This can be bad news for maintenance. In any case, the mine must downsize correctly to ensure effective maintenance is sustained.

EMR Microwave has developed several unique processes for the pretreatment of refractory gold and copper ores. This report describes a recent large scale pilot project involving a carbonaceous gold-bearing whole ore. Pilot plant testwork conducted jointly by EMR and Bateman Engineering Inc. has shown that 90+% cyanide soluble gold recovery is obtainable from refractory (sulphide and carbonaceous) Carlin, Nevada gold ores. Typical cyanide soluble gold recoveries for untreated material is 20%. AC energy consumption was found to be between 58.l kWh/ton and 15.5 kWh/t for an assumed heat recovery of 50% and 80% respectively. The plant was operated at reduced temperatures ( 400°C) from previous testwork on similar ore at 600°-700°C.

"Since 1997 the Institute of Mining Engineering 1 at the Aachen University is dealing with the concept of sustainable development in the mineral industries. During this time it has conducted several research projects in this field. Its latest project is on the development of sustainability indicators for the German mineral industry. This paper describes some results of this project. A process chain analyses have been carried out identifying economic, social and environmental effects of the minerals extraction. Thirty indicators reflecting the particular conditions in the mineral industry have been designed. One important challenge was the design of quantifiable indicators taking into account the life cycle of a mining operation as well as mineral beneficiation and enrichment of the raw material."

For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in terms of decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, which is scheduled to go into production by the end of this year and includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2,348 meters (7,700 feet), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 meters (2,000 feet) of development drifting and stope preparation, was initially concieved in the Fall of 1979. This duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is a testimonial to what can be accomplished when a progressive mining company and an innovative contractor work together as a team rather than developing into two warring camps as often happens.

The consumption rate of Estonian oil shale increases due to the growing rate of exported oil-shale oil. Estonian oil shale active resources in working mines are predicted until the year of 2025 when the consumption rate stays at the level of 12 tons per year. If the consumption rate stays at that level, new mines should be opened after 20 years, if the rate increases new mines should be opened even earlier. The predicted active resources in Estonian oil shale deposits are calculated for 60 years, based on the parameters of the power station technicoeconomics. As a result, there is a need to open new mines. One of the potential areas for surface mine is the Tammiku-Kose prospect area (Rheinbaun Engineering, 1996).

Echo Bay's Waste Management Program for its Lupin Mine was developed in response to the terms and conditions of the water license issued to the mine in 1981 by the Northwest Territories Water Board. The gold mine, located about 80 km (50 miles) south of the Arctic Circle, commenced production in 1982. The Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept, contingent on future treatability testwork results indicating the best treatment method to ensure pond discharges would be in compliance with stated Northwest Territories Water Board discharge criteria. To assess the various treatment technologies, an investigative program was established to determine the most effective means for treating the tailings pond water. In the course of milling, about 850,000 m3 (11 million cu yd) of tailings are produced annually that require appropriate management to protect the environment. This annual tailings stream consists of about 175,000 m3 (229,000 cu yd) of solids and 675,000 m3 (883,500 cu yd) of water. Following the completion of the required waste management studies, a two-ponds-in-series concept of tailings impoundment was developed. To attain this concept, the tailings impoundment area would require modification and construction to enable the use of such a system.
