Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Occasionally, standing supports are used to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for standing supports to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. The Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. Prop models were used to study the effect of a range of roof and floor materials — gray shale, shale and claystone — on the critical buckling loads of the steel props.

Knife River Coal Mining Company's Beulah Mine is a multiple seam lignite operation located in western North Dakota. The mine began production in 1963 with annual production at 450,000 metric ton and now produces 2.2 mm ton. As development progresses, operations have advanced into more complex geologic areas. Various techniques have been analyzed to maximize coal recovery in a cost effective manner. Additional studies are on-going to determine what changes will be implemented as we encounter deep wet sands in the reserve area.

The MANpower SUPport Program (MANSUPP), a part of the Mine Management Support System (MMSS), allows an underground coal mine site user to determine manpower requirements for production support work by considering ongoing operations and current mine conditions. The objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and management preferences to predict required manhours for various activities, for example, belt moves. The program is written in Quattro Pro version 3.0 (Lotus 1-2-3 compatible) utilizing the command language, macro and formula capabilities.

Gold has always been a crisis investment. For centuries gold has been considered globally the money of last resort. In time of war, inflation, financial uncertainty, political upheaval there has with few exceptions always been a flight to gold. The gold paradox simply is that even though we have gone through for the past handful of years all the kinds of. anxieties that would cause the gold price to rise, it has instead dropped drastically. Figure 1. illustrates the important factors that influenced the gold price significantly up or down before 1987. Obviously, since then, even though we have had wars, inflation, financial problems involving breaking banks and thrifts let alone collapsing financial institutions, the gold price has both in the long-term and the short-term trended downwards. Figure 2. depicts the gold price path since 1987. If the presence of time-honored and time-tested factors that should have driven the gold price up didn't do the job, then logic dictates that new factors to drive the gold price down and keep it depressed arose. And they did. But before addressing these depressants permit me to turn to the arcane art of gold price prediction and fore-casting.

By March 2001, shrinking global markets, reduced consumer spending and declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output ended the longest economic expansion in US history and pushed the nation’s economy into its first recession in a decade. Aggravated by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, the recession led to large reductions in the domestic production of processed mineral materials. Some of the most significant production declines in the US metals industry were registered by aluminum, copper and steel producers. They faced strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. However, homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors — major users of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above previous year levels. A strong US dollar continued to weaken the competitive stance of US metal and nonmetallic mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

Aiming at characteristics of the soft coal roadway engineering geology and deformation, the exposure research of the soft coal seam, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation and program design were carried out. First of all, according to the disclosure, soft coal seam engineering characteristics and geological conditions in Xinxing coal mine were expounded. Meanwhile, the soft coal roadway bolt supporting axial effect, the bolt supporting transverse effect, the anchorage body mechanics strengthening mechanism and problems such as supporting strength have been analyzed. The paper pointed out that the soft coal with very small cohesive force can form a composite anchorage body under the combined action of the anchor cable group, the W-type steel band and the metal net. The soft coal body in the plastic damage area formed anchorage balance arch with a certain bearing capacity and adapted to the rock deformation, and which played an effective support role in the roof outside the balance arch of the roadway. Therefore, the full-cable support technology was proposed. And then, numerical calculation and comparative analysis were conducted on three schemes of the roadway with non-support, with combined support of “anchor bolt and cable” and the full-cable support. The results show that when the roof is supported by anchor cable, it not only controls the continued increase of the subsidence value of the roof, but also effectively suppresses the convergence amount of the floor heave value and the amount on the sidewalls of the roadway. Whether it is from the stress distribution situation, or the viewpoint of plastic zone scope, the combined support of full-cable is more reasonable than that with non-support and that with the combined support of “anchor bolt and cable”. Finally, based on the features of soft coal seam in No.2265 work face of Xinxing coal mine, the relevant support schemes were put forward, and its specific support parameters and cross-section designs were drawn as well.

Lightweight concretes date back to before the Roman Empire. The earlier concretes were made by combining a burnt lime for cementious material with pumice or volcanic rock for aggregate. Although structural value was limited due to its primitive nature, many structures were able to withstand the test of time. The rotary kiln expanded shale industry had a slow start that began around 1908. The industry was founded by Stephen J. Hayde of Kansas city, Missouri. Mr. Hayde noticed that the bloating effects of some aggregates were undesirable by the brick industry. Material of this type was considered waste and avoided in brick production, but he realized it had all the qualities and basic requirements for a concrete aggregate that would reduce weight and still retain structural value. It came into national attention by use in ocean-going vessels through a shipbuilding program undertaken by the united states Fleet Corporation. This research was brought about by the need to find a suitable material to replace high-grade plate steel due to a shortage created by World War I. The need prompted the government to supply the reserves that Stephen Hayde desired to continue and complete research into producing a uniform lightweight aggregate. In 1910, Colonel Boyce Thompson, who owned Inspiration (now Cyprus Miami) and various other mining interests, formed the Magma Copper Company and leased the Silver Queen claims around Superior, Arizona. At the same time, he purchased other claims around the Silver Queen claims from what was then called the Magma Mine. The mine continued to operate until 1982 when Newmont Mining Company, who owned Magma Copper Company, shut down the operations due to high costs and low copper prices. When Magma was spun off by Newmont as an independent company in 1987, new studies of Superior were started. It was clear from these studies that the mine had been shutdown and over 1400 employees laid off for two basic reasons: first, as a resu1t of a mine plan that was technically flawed and second, be-cause of very high production costs mainly due to the low productivity from a very high cost work force. During 1989 a plan was formulated to re-open Superior with the determination to over-come the problems that resulted in closure. A new mine plan was developed and a management style developed that promotes team work and high productivity.

The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCI. Precipitation of the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government commissioned the design and construction of the West Kowloon Drainage Improvement, Stage 2, Phase 2, Kai Tak Transfer Scheme (KTTS) project in 2000 to relieve potential flooding in Mong Kok caused by the insufficient capacity of the existing storm water drainage system. The KTTS involves construction of a 1.5km,4.4m drainage tunnel and a 450m long box culvert, running from Waterloo Road near Hereford Road to the existing Kai Tak Nullah in San Po Kong. This paper describes the design and construction of; the bored tunnel through both hard rock and soft ground using a slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), six associated access shafts, a connection structure at Waterloo Road and the box culvert connecting the bored tunnel to the outfall at Kai Tak nullah. Details will be provided on the contractor’s alternative designs adopted during the contract including the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete as one-pass temporary and permanent support for three of the shafts and modifications to the Engineer’s design for the box culvert structure.

The main variables are: belt cleaner blade materials, cleaning pressures, cleaning angles, belt speeds, and belt top cover grade. The bulk material used is a standard test-grade silica sand. The measured results include: blade mass loss, belt mass loss, and cleaning efficiency.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s annual conference and expo, MINEXCHANGE 2026, will take place Feb. 22–25, 2026, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The event will foster a hub for innovation, technical exchange and policy discussion for the global mining industry. Over four days, attendees will take part in short courses, technical sessions, field trips and networking events that highlight the advancement of the mining industry. The conference’s keynote session, titled “Regaining America’s Mineral Dominance,” will start at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 23 in the Grand Ballroom E–J. The speaker will address the sweeping policy actions now shaping the nation’s mineral future, following a series of executive orders issued by the Trump administration designed to bolster domestic mineral production and energy security. These directives, including Immediate Measures to Increase Domestic Mineral Production (EO 14241) and Establishing the National Energy Dominance Council (EO 14213), have set in motion a coordinated effort across the Departments of Interior, Energy, Defense and Commerce to enhance the United States’ position as a global leader in critical minerals. The invited speakers include Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox and Nate Foster, managing director of Rio Tinto Kennecott, who will examine how policy and industry are converging to meet surging demand for minerals essential to modern technology. Governor Cox is expected to highlight Utah’s long-standing role in American mining, from the early development of Kennecott Copper to its current position as a producer of 40 of the nation’s 50 identified critical minerals. Foster, meanwhile, will offer insights into Rio Tinto’s extensive operations in Utah, including the Kennecott Copper Mine — one of only two operating copper smelters in the United States — and the company’s ongoing efforts to build more resilient, sustainable supply chains. Rio Tinto’s work in critical mineral production, from copper and tellurium in Utah to new operations in Arizona, has made it a fundamental figure in the U.S. mineral economy. Projects such as the Resolution Copper development and the revival of Gunnison Copper using Rio Tinto’s innovative Nuton technology illustrate how private-sector leadership is driving sustainability in domestic mining. These advancements come at a critical moment for the industry, as copper prices remain near historic highs. Mechanical raise and tunnel boring are new techniques to most of the mining industry. Coal, salt and potash have been bored economically, but until recently boring machines were not designed specifically for rock boring in underground mining. The construction industry has led the field of rock boring since 1854 when the first tunnel boring machines built by James S. Robbins and Associates went to work at Oahe Dam, South Dakota. Since that time the company has built boring machines for tunneling through ground conditions varying from cohesionless soil to hard rock, and in diameters ranging from 7 feet to 36 feet 8 inches. It is natural that the construction industry got the jump on mining with the use of mechanical rock boring equipment. Mines have looked for the long range answer to problems of underground excavation and they have chosen proved and established techniques they expect to employ for the next ten or twenty years. The mine development was laid out to accommodate these techniques.

In this chapter, the principles that determine the procedures selected to transform minerals in the ground into usable commodities are re¬viewed.a I argue here that straightforward mod¬ification of the modern general economic theory of production suffices to meet the practical needs of a mineral economist. Therefore, the chapter is largely a review of the general economic theory of production to which is added discussion of the special prob¬lems of the exhaustibility of mineral resources and the economics of finding and developing economically recoverable minerals. In many cases, propositions applicable to all industries are reviewed because they are not treated ade¬quately in prior texts. In the discussion, use is frequently made of basic concepts of differential calculus widely used in economics. However, this is supple¬mented by simpler verbal and graphical treat¬ments, so that those either untrained in the calculus or, as is often the case, whose skills have grown rusty, can still follow the discus¬sion. Where the argument depends critically on the mathematics, this is noted and the justifi¬cation for including the material is provided. In addition, an appendix outlines the critical mathematics and reviews some of the numerous books published that provide the most readable available introduction to the subject. Further¬more, mineral industries examples are used to suggest the relevance of the theory. THE RELEVANCE OF THE ECONOMICS OF PRODUCTION Three basic steps are involved in establishing the relevance of economic analysis to mineral ¬industries decision making. First, the general theory of production must be defined, and its relationship to the simpler models of production stressed in economics textbooks must be noted. Second, the critical modification-considera¬tion of the problems of discovering and devel¬oping mineral deposits-must be developed. It turns out this too involves a special case of the general theory of production. Third, the concept of an economics of exhaustible resources must be explored sufficiently to suggest why its practical relevance is doubtful (or at least far smaller than the numerous writers on the subject seem to believe). The present approach is heavily influenced by post-1945 developments in economic anal¬ysis. Particularly since World War II, economic theory has drastically changed its scope. First, stress has increased greatly upon viewing the economy as a network of intertwined markets known technically as the general equilibrium system.b In this view, not only is the economy viewed as an integrated system, but critical con¬cepts are viewed somewhat differently than was previously fashionable. Requirements for minerals are on the increase globally and the deep sea offers a potential source of essential materials. Extracting these minerals from what is considered an environmentally sensitive area, and one about which little is still known, is a challenging activity, which needs careful consideration and an appropriate environmental impact assessment to be carried out. Extraction of material from the deep sea beds can cause disturbance or damage to benthic communities; impact on mobile marine species such as fish, mammals and reptiles; cause increases in suspended sediment and sediment deposition onto potentially sensitive areas or potentially release contaminants which were previously bound to the sediment. This paper discusses the potential environmental issues surrounding extraction of deep-sea deposits using aggregate dredging techniques and how those issues can be appropriately assessed. In particular issues of suspended sediments, plume transport, water and sediment quality and underwater noise impacts on potentially sensitive species and habitats will be explored.

Rapid coal extraction techniques in gassy mines may strain a ventilation system if a degasification approach is not utilized. Design of mine ventilation systems requires estimates of gas emission rates from unmined coal into the existing mine workings. A degasification system for a specific property can be properly engineered to improve mining economics if the proper geologic and reservoir information is collected. This paper describes methods to determine the degasification rates for horizontal boreholes and vertical (stimulated and unstimulated) wells and the rate of gas emissions into the mine workings. The methodology is demonstrated by a specific example. Horizontal boreholes drilled in advance of mining are demonstrated to be the most effective means of coal seam degasification and reduction of gas emissions into mine workings. The significance of the paper is that few published methods for these estimates are available

3-D or pseudo 3-D visualization of orebodies and mining related processes such as loading and tramming, are now commonly used by the mining industry. An approach is presented that can aid the engineer in creating the visualizations necessary for accurate presentations for use in public relations, safety training, production projections, reclamation plans, etc. It is shown that the creation of such digital representations of mining environments are independent of the mining package used to create the original mine design. Once a proper model has been created, any view of the areas is possible. These views can be taken from any number of stationary points or entered into an animation showing the progress of a mining construction. The paper focuses on the presentation of the steps used to accomplish the visualization and an example is for a quarry fill placement project.

A number of factors have resulted in the widespread use of computer simulation as a day to day tool in the mineral processing industry, as is the case in most engineering disciplines. A number of simulation packages, both steady-state and dynamic are now available commercially. The developers of such software face an enormous challenge in maintaining and improving the packages due to the complexity inherent in such systems. This problem known as the software crisis faces all developers of complex software. Object-oriented (OOP) and design is a methodology which has been developed to try and minimise this problem. The use of the OOP paradigm in the devlopment of simulation software for mineral processing systems is explored in this paper and it is found that OOP techniques have major benefits for the design and development of such software.

Under the theme “Empowering the Future of Mining,” the conference served as a dynamic platform for professional development, knowledge-sharing and cross-sector collaboration. Organized by Women in Mining USA (WIM USA), whose mission is to foster equity, sustainability and leadership in mining, the event featured an extensive agenda including workshops, keynote speeches, panel discussions and networking opportunities.
