In 1910, Colonel Boyce Thompson, who owned Inspiration (now Cyprus Miami) and various other mining interests, formed the Magma Copper Company and leased the Silver Queen claims around Superior, Arizona. At the same time, he purchased other claims around the Silver Queen claims from what was then called the Magma Mine. The mine continued to operate until 1982 when Newmont Mining Company, who owned Magma Copper Company, shut down the operations due to high costs and low copper prices. When Magma was spun off by Newmont as an independent company in 1987, new studies of Superior were started. It was clear from these studies that the mine had been shutdown and over 1400 employees laid off for two basic reasons: first, as a resu1t of a mine plan that was technically flawed and second, be-cause of very high production costs mainly due to the low productivity from a very high cost work force. During 1989 a plan was formulated to re-open Superior with the determination to over-come the problems that resulted in closure. A new mine plan was developed and a management style developed that promotes team work and high productivity.

The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCI. Precipitation of the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

This paper discusses a series of tests designed to help answer the age old question: ?How much does the belt cleaner wear my belt?? The experimental set up and test method are described. The main variables are: belt cleaner blade materials, cleaning pressures, cleaning angles, belt speeds, and belt top cover grade. The bulk material used is a standard test-grade silica sand. The measured results include: blade mass loss, belt mass loss, and cleaning efficiency.

In this chapter, the principles that determine the procedures selected to transform minerals in the ground into usable commodities are re¬viewed.a I argue here that straightforward mod¬ification of the modern general economic theory of production suffices to meet the practical needs of a mineral economist. Therefore, the chapter is largely a review of the general economic theory of production to which is added discussion of the special prob¬lems of the exhaustibility of mineral resources and the economics of finding and developing economically recoverable minerals. In many cases, propositions applicable to all industries are reviewed because they are not treated ade¬quately in prior texts. In the discussion, use is frequently made of basic concepts of differential calculus widely used in economics. However, this is supple¬mented by simpler verbal and graphical treat¬ments, so that those either untrained in the calculus or, as is often the case, whose skills have grown rusty, can still follow the discus¬sion. Where the argument depends critically on the mathematics, this is noted and the justifi¬cation for including the material is provided. In addition, an appendix outlines the critical mathematics and reviews some of the numerous books published that provide the most readable available introduction to the subject. Further¬more, mineral industries examples are used to suggest the relevance of the theory. THE RELEVANCE OF THE ECONOMICS OF PRODUCTION Three basic steps are involved in establishing the relevance of economic analysis to mineral ¬industries decision making. First, the general theory of production must be defined, and its relationship to the simpler models of production stressed in economics textbooks must be noted. Second, the critical modification-considera¬tion of the problems of discovering and devel¬oping mineral deposits-must be developed. It turns out this too involves a special case of the general theory of production. Third, the concept of an economics of exhaustible resources must be explored sufficiently to suggest why its practical relevance is doubtful (or at least far smaller than the numerous writers on the subject seem to believe). The present approach is heavily influenced by post-1945 developments in economic anal¬ysis. Particularly since World War II, economic theory has drastically changed its scope. First, stress has increased greatly upon viewing the economy as a network of intertwined markets known technically as the general equilibrium system.b In this view, not only is the economy viewed as an integrated system, but critical con¬cepts are viewed somewhat differently than was previously fashionable. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s annual conference and expo, MINEXCHANGE 2026, will take place Feb. 22–25, 2026, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The event will foster a hub for innovation, technical exchange and policy discussion for the global mining industry. Over four days, attendees will take part in short courses, technical sessions, field trips and networking events that highlight the advancement of the mining industry. The conference’s keynote session, titled “Regaining America’s Mineral Dominance,” will start at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 23 in the Grand Ballroom E–J. The speaker will address the sweeping policy actions now shaping the nation’s mineral future, following a series of executive orders issued by the Trump administration designed to bolster domestic mineral production and energy security. These directives, including Immediate Measures to Increase Domestic Mineral Production (EO 14241) and Establishing the National Energy Dominance Council (EO 14213), have set in motion a coordinated effort across the Departments of Interior, Energy, Defense and Commerce to enhance the United States’ position as a global leader in critical minerals. The invited speakers include Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox and Nate Foster, managing director of Rio Tinto Kennecott, who will examine how policy and industry are converging to meet surging demand for minerals essential to modern technology. Governor Cox is expected to highlight Utah’s long-standing role in American mining, from the early development of Kennecott Copper to its current position as a producer of 40 of the nation’s 50 identified critical minerals. Foster, meanwhile, will offer insights into Rio Tinto’s extensive operations in Utah, including the Kennecott Copper Mine — one of only two operating copper smelters in the United States — and the company’s ongoing efforts to build more resilient, sustainable supply chains. Rio Tinto’s work in critical mineral production, from copper and tellurium in Utah to new operations in Arizona, has made it a fundamental figure in the U.S. mineral economy. Projects such as the Resolution Copper development and the revival of Gunnison Copper using Rio Tinto’s innovative Nuton technology illustrate how private-sector leadership is driving sustainability in domestic mining. These advancements come at a critical moment for the industry, as copper prices remain near historic highs. The keynote session will emphasize that meeting future mineral demand will require a concerted effort between government, industry and technology partners to secure responsible, domestic production. Mechanical raise and tunnel boring are new techniques to most of the mining industry. Coal, salt and potash have been bored economically, but until recently boring machines were not designed specifically for rock boring in underground mining. The construction industry has led the field of rock boring since 1854 when the first tunnel boring machines built by James S. Robbins and Associates went to work at Oahe Dam, South Dakota. Since that time the company has built boring machines for tunneling through ground conditions varying from cohesionless soil to hard rock, and in diameters ranging from 7 feet to 36 feet 8 inches. It is natural that the construction industry got the jump on mining with the use of mechanical rock boring equipment. Mines have looked for the long range answer to problems of underground excavation and they have chosen proved and established techniques they expect to employ for the next ten or twenty years. The mine development was laid out to accommodate these techniques.

Rapid coal extraction techniques in gassy mines may strain a ventilation system if a degasification approach is not utilized. Design of mine ventilation systems requires estimates of gas emission rates from unmined coal into the existing mine workings. A degasification system for a specific property can be properly engineered to improve mining economics if the proper geologic and reservoir information is collected. This paper describes methods to determine the degasification rates for horizontal boreholes and vertical (stimulated and unstimulated) wells and the rate of gas emissions into the mine workings. The methodology is demonstrated by a specific example. Horizontal boreholes drilled in advance of mining are demonstrated to be the most effective means of coal seam degasification and reduction of gas emissions into mine workings. The significance of the paper is that few published methods for these estimates are available

3-D or pseudo 3-D visualization of orebodies and mining related processes such as loading and tramming, are now commonly used by the mining industry. An approach is presented that can aid the engineer in creating the visualizations necessary for accurate presentations for use in public relations, safety training, production projections, reclamation plans, etc. It is shown that the creation of such digital representations of mining environments are independent of the mining package used to create the original mine design. Once a proper model has been created, any view of the areas is possible. These views can be taken from any number of stationary points or entered into an animation showing the progress of a mining construction. The paper focuses on the presentation of the steps used to accomplish the visualization and an example is for a quarry fill placement project.

A number of factors have resulted in the widespread use of computer simulation as a day to day tool in the mineral processing industry, as is the case in most engineering disciplines. A number of simulation packages, both steady-state and dynamic are now available commercially. The developers of such software face an enormous challenge in maintaining and improving the packages due to the complexity inherent in such systems. This problem known as the software crisis faces all developers of complex software. Object-oriented (OOP) and design is a methodology which has been developed to try and minimise this problem. The use of the OOP paradigm in the devlopment of simulation software for mineral processing systems is explored in this paper and it is found that OOP techniques have major benefits for the design and development of such software.

Requirements for minerals are on the increase globally and the deep sea offers a potential source of essential materials. Extracting these minerals from what is considered an environmentally sensitive area, and one about which little is still known, is a challenging activity, which needs careful consideration and an appropriate environmental impact assessment to be carried out. Extraction of material from the deep sea beds can cause disturbance or damage to benthic communities; impact on mobile marine species such as fish, mammals and reptiles; cause increases in suspended sediment and sediment deposition onto potentially sensitive areas or potentially release contaminants which were previously bound to the sediment. This paper discusses the potential environmental issues surrounding extraction of deep-sea deposits using aggregate dredging techniques and how those issues can be appropriately assessed. In particular issues of suspended sediments, plume transport, water and sediment quality and underwater noise impacts on potentially sensitive species and habitats will be explored.

The 2025 Women in Mining USA National Conference, held April 15-18 at the Grand Hyatt Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX, brought together hundreds of professionals for a fourday event focused on empowering women and creating space for all individuals in the industry. Under the theme “Empowering the Future of Mining,” the conference served as a dynamic platform for professional development, knowledge-sharing and cross-sector collaboration. Organized by Women in Mining USA (WIM USA), whose mission is to foster equity, sustainability and leadership in mining, the event featured an extensive agenda including workshops, keynote speeches, panel discussions and networking opportunities. Attendees ranged from industry veterans to emerging professionals and students, united by a shared commitment to progress within one of the world’s most essential and traditionally maledominated sectors.

1. INTRODUCTION Empirical methods have always been important in tunneling in contrast to many other branches of engineering. Beginning in the late 19th century, when engineering entered the phase of formal modeling, this dichotomy could be seen to emerge even in the work of individuals. Culmann (1), Ritter (2) Kommerell (3) and others simultaneously were developing analytical approaches to bridge and building design and empirical approaches to tunnel design. The dichotomy remains. Empirical or simple analytical methods are used at most in the preliminary design of bridges and buildings, while they are used in all phases of tunnel design and construction. In fact, the past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in empirical methods, and with it discussion and controversy. This discussion has centered on the suitability of various methods. In some applications identical results are obtained with differing methods and in some cases radically different ones. On certain occasions the discussion has focused more on the methodological rather than empirical by taking issue with the appropriateness of particular parameters or the structure of some methods. This paper attempts to establish a basis for judging the suitability of empirical methods in tunnel design, and their applicability to particular cases. The paper makes no claim of exhaustiveness, and instead emphasizes basic requirements for application. Various methods are reviewed against this background. A detailed comparison of empirical methods and a description of their concept and background is now being prepared (4). Specifically the paper first defines empirical methods, and their purpose (Section 2), describes their structure (Section 3), and focuses on the basic requirements each must satisfy (Section 4). A method of raising by use of a cage has been used with considerable success at the Cary Mine, Hurley, Wisconsin, on the Gogebic Range. The Cary Mine is owned by the Odanah Iron Company, Pickands, Mather and Company, Managers. This method is known to have been used previously at Tennessee Copper and probably in other districts. The Cary Mine was engaged in deepening the main shaft from the 34th to the 37th level. To accomplish this, and to facilitate development, a ventilation shaft 930 feet north of the main shaft was sunk from the 34th to the 37th level and crosscuts were driven on the 35th, 36th and 37th levels to the main shaft location, These levels are at 200 foot verticalintervals. All of this work was done in granite and the majority of the workings were not timbered. The next step was to get a raise through from the 37th to the 36th level, and from the 36th to the 35th level, which would later be stripped to full shaft size. Several methods of raising were considered including double-compartment cribbed and two single raises interconnected at regular intervals, but the cage method was chosen as it appeared to be a safe and efficient operation. The method in general consists in the use of a drill hole between levels through which to pass a hoisting rope to raise and lower a light cage.

Mechanization has been at the core of productivity improvements since the industrial revolution. During the past 20 years, mining has derived spectacular progress from mechanization. In the future, however, mechanization alone will not be enough. In the next few decades, automation will bring about new generations of highly productive and safe machines, with low operating costs. Increased use of new and better technology is generally accepted as the prime factor capable of closing the productivity gap. The productivity gap is the difference between inflation and metal prices. The three S-curves in Fig. I represent the evolution of technology in general, and mining in particular. TI represents incremental changes. the dominant sort of technology changes in the mining industry: - Better drills, electric hydraulic drills vs. pneumatic drills, the drilling rate is twice as fast. - Better steel and bits, to accommodate the higher performance drills. - Improved chemical explosives. - Bigger trucks in open pits.

It is shown that seriously preoxidized arsenopyrite can adsorb a large amount of copper ions as unoxidized one, but without, release of corresponding amount of Fe ions; seriously preoxidized pyrite cannot adsorb copper ions, but with release of a large amount of Fe ions. However, if the minerals are rapidly oxidized with potassium permanganate solution, both arsenopyrite and especially pyrite can adsorb a large amount of copper ions, but still without release of corresponding amount, of Fe ions. Cu adsorption (if there is any) on both oxidized arsenopyrite and pyrite is not based on the Cu-Fe exchange mechanism.

An arsenal of isotopic techniques is avail-able that can date the full range of hydrothermal ore deposits. The following are prerequisites for ideal results: (1) Careful collection of samples that are related to the event in a field and process context; (2) Optical examination of the component selected for dating to be sure that it has not been altered; (3) Careful preparation of a pure component of the sample selected for dating; (4) Precise and accurate measurement; (5) Knowledgeable interpretation of the data with reference to decay systematics, properties of the component analyzed as well as the field context and thermochemical environment of the ore process.

When longwall equipment is being specified, a nominal capacity is generally given on which to base the design of the various face and out-bye systems and components. This capacity generally comes from a nominal annual capacity requirement based on realistic utilization rates. From illustrative examples of simple system simulation, this paper sets out to show that a single nominal capacity is not sufficient to size the different systems. The manner in which the Longwall is operated and the overall system configuration and availability can have a significant impact on overall productivity.

Abundant beach and offshore resources of gold deposits are demonstrated along the coast of Alaska, and Nome is one of the richest places. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were collected and stored in geodatabase of ArcGIS. In searching for the best model for the interpretation of the Nome offshore gold placer deposit and accurate estimation of the reserve, the data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS. The gold concentration data collected from the Nome offshore deposit are of characteristics such that: (1) near lognormal distribution of data, (2) high positive skewed distribution, (3) a small number of extreme values dominating the reserve estimation, and (4) apparent anisotropy of the variogram. These characteristics make the development of an interpolation model for the gold deposit a challenging task. In this study, it is determined that five geostatistical methods provided by ArcGIS with visualization capability, i.e., Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), Ordinary Kriging with lognormal transformation (OK-log), Simple Kriging (SK) and Indicator Kriging (IK) are suitable candidates for the development of an interpolation model. The five algorithms are evaluated and compared with each other in the study. Cross-validation technique is employed to examine the accuracy of the five approaches. It is determined that the OK and SK algorithms are not suitable for this dataset because of the difficulty of fitting the semivariogram model despite their lower RMSE (Root-mean-square error) and the higher RMSS (Root-mean-square Standardized). The OK-log algorithm does not provide satisfactory prediction either, because it places too much weight on the role of extreme values resulting in overestimation and extremely high RMSE. Reserve estimation of each blocks is conducted using each of the interpolation methods and compared with the reserve calculated using the conventional polygon method. The IWD and IK algorithm seem to provide estimations more agreeable with the conventional polygon method.
