I.H. 635 (LBJ Freeway) was constructed as a loop freeway around the city of Dallas in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a design capacity of 160,000 vehicles per day (vpd). Today’s facility is carrying over 270,000 vpd. To help mitigate community concerns with regard to right-of-way issues, noise, safety, and traffic disruption, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning a number of significant improvements. The West Section improvements include the construction of managed HOV/Toll lanes. Within this 8-mile section, TxDOT is planning two mined tunnels(1.5 and 1.9 miles long) beneath the LBJ Freeway. The mined tunnels will connect to cut-and-cover box sections in both the east and west directions. This paper presents an overview of the project development from the design schematic, through the geotechnical investigations, into the current design stage. The project is being planned for implementation by use of a Comprehensive Development Agreement.

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. In the Preliminary Engineering stage, 30 existing tunnels were assessed and 28 were found to need clearance improvements to allow the use of double stack trains. Alternative tunnel enlargement methods were developed to achieve the desired clearance improvements, while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing disruption to train traffic. This paper summarizes the geometric and condition investigations of the existing tunnels, as well as describes the preferred methodologies to achieve the desired clearance. The clearance improvements will be implemented beginning in the summer of 2007.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for tunnel construction of long tunnels in the Andes of South America has been of mixed success in the past due to a variety of reasons and key lessons can be recognized. A review of past TBM tunnel projects in the Andes has unveiled some interesting findings for different TBM tunnel approaches with both world records of progress as well as nearly in-completed projects with machines being abandoned. Key considerations for the use of TBMs for tunnel construction in the Andes include geological issues; (faults, rock type, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, groundwater inflows),depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, intermediate access possibilities, minimum tunnel size, support requirements, contractor and labour experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer highly recognized schedule benefits(high progress, no concrete lining) for a project if intermediate access adits are limited as well as hydraulic benefits for water conveyance projects. Minimum specifications for TBMs can be easily developed to suit the unique requirements of any project so as long as all factors are carefully considered. The overall conditions and factors associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs due to a perceived high risk. Finally, access for geotechnical investigations by drilling in the commonly steep terrain of the Andes is typically difficult and often not impossible. Alternative approaches for geotechnical investigations for TBM tunnels including comprehensive mapping, high-resolution airborne electric-magnetics for delineation of possible fault zones, and rock block sampling is presented and discussed.

Magnesite has the unique combination of properties that make it useful in a wide variety of metallurgical applications. The use of refractory magnesite has been increasing throughout the world, but the source of the "ore" differs. The United States has increased production of synthetic magnesites while the rest of the world is exploiting its resources, using natural magnesites. The history and methods of manufacturing synthetic magnesite are discussed as well as the practices for beneficiating natural magnesite. The properties, costs, and uses of the two types of magnesite are discussed and compared.

INTRODUCTION Coal gold agglomeration (CGA) is a new concept in gold processing. It involves the recovery of oleophilic (oil-loving) gold grains by causing them to adhere selectively to the surfaces of coal oil agglomerates. Under optimum conditions very high recoveries of gold. can be achieved. The agglomerates are recycled to build up gold loading to typically 1000 - 5000 g/tonne. Bullion can be produced by burning the loaded agglomerates with subsequent recovery of gold from the highly loaded ash either by dissolution/electrowinning or smelting. A wide-ranging programme of laboratory testwork has been performed to investigate the response of different ore types to the process. This has shown CGA to be most applicable to ores in which the gold is liberated or easily liberatable, relatively coarse (ca 500 µm) and fine (<5 µm) gold grains being recoverable with equal ease. The best opportunities for CGA seem to be: • placers containing fine gold not recoverable by gravity concentration • low grade gravity concentrates to avoid multiple magnetic/gravity separation stages and amalgamation • free milling ores where the gold can be liberated at a reasonable ore particle size eg >d80 50 µm • tailings past or present from gravity concentration plants. CGA testwork ranging in scale from laboratory to pilot plant on tailings produced by gravity concentration in the 19th century Australian gold rush has already been reported (Bonney, C F, 1988; House, C I, Townsend, I C and Veal, C J, 1988). An economic appraisal for a Canadian free milling gold ore has also been published (Buckley, S A, House, C I and Townsend, I G, 1989). This paper describes results of a detailed laboratory programme to assess CGA as a means of recovering gold from a beach sand deposit in New Zealand. The area from which the samples were taken consists of quarternary interglacial marine, lagoonal, fluvial and eolian deposits. The heavy minerals present are predominantly ilmenite and garnet and small concentrations of gold. In certain locations the sands and gravels are consolidated by a limonitic cement. In the 19th Century some parts of the deposit were mined and the ore processed using stamp milling and gravity concentration. Gold recoveries were low, probably below 50%, due primarily to the fine size of the gold grains, the flaky nature of the gold and also imperfect liberation by the stamp mills. Our laboratory testwork was divided into three parts: i) Preliminary studies on an initial sample to assess the feasibility of treating the ore by CGA ii) Extended studies on further samples from various locations in the deposit to confirm predictions from (i) iii) Conventional gold recovery techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All CGA tests were performed by agitating a slurry of ore in water in a 0.6 dm3 pyrex beaker fitted with four vertical baffles. When required, potassium amyl xanthate collector was added and the slurry conditioned for 5 min. Coal (ex BP Coal Australia&apos;s Tahmoor Colliery) previously ground to a d80 50 µm was added followed by a commercial grade of gas oil (density 840 kg/m3). The agglomeration time was 30 min. The agglomerates were separated from the tailings by screening, both were then dried and analysed for gold by fire assay. This test procedure provides a reasonably accurate estimate of gold recoveries that might be expected from our 1 tph pilot plant. "Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanodynamic and chronopotentiometric techniques were used to characterize the effects of DXG-F7®, a commercial smoothing agent, on copper electrodeposition onto 316L stainless steel from a synthetic electrolyte containing 40 g/L copper (Cu2+), 160 g/L sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 20 mg/L chloride (Cl-) at 40oC. The findings were compared against results using HydroStar® 4208, a modified polysaccharide. The nucleation overpotential and plating potential observed in cyclic voltammetry and galvanodynamic testing showed that neither DXG-F7 nor HydroStar significantly polarized acidic copper electrodeposition. Subtle differences between the additives were found during EIS testing and modeling, but more research will be needed to fully understand these differences. Surface-roughness measurements of two-hour deposits indicate that DXG-F7 and HydroStar produced smoother deposits as their concentrations in the electrolyte increased. No difference in the surface roughness of deposits was detected between the additives. Based on the experimental evidence resulting from the laboratory testing, no significant difference was found between DXG-F7 and HydroStar at 20 mg/L Cl- concentration, with the exception that DXG-F7 dissolves more easily in water than HydroStar. Introduction Cathode deposits obtained from acidified copper sulfate electrolyte(s) without organic additives are often soft, coarsely crystalline and nodular (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Therefore, small amounts of organic additives are added to the electrolyte to produce level and dense cathodes during copper electrowinning. The action of organic additives is thought to be due to their adsorption on the surfaces of the newly formed copper grains. Hence, any copper grain that grows excessively fast adsorbs a layer of organic additive, which inhibits growth. The result is a smoother and harder deposit of suitable purity (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). In part I of our four-part series on the examining of copper electrowinning smoothing agents, a review of previously published work on organic additives used during copper electrowinning was presented (Moats, Luyima and Cui, 2016). In the review, it was noted that many tankhouses had switched from guar to other saccharide-based products such as HydroStar and DXG-F7."

Excellent underground industrial sites and warehouse facilities have been constructed in Europe and at several locations in the United States. Many quarry and mine operators are considering, or should consider, the possibilities of the development of their mineral properties in such a manner as to make underground space that is suitable for a secondary industrial use. Before proceeding with mine or quarry development, the operator should answer the following questions: 1) Is there a need for underground industrial space in your geographical area? 2) Is your deposit suitable for development of space for industrial usage? 3) If the deposit is suitable, what methods of development can be used? 4) What are the comparative economics of the different methods of space development? An honest analysis of the first two questions may eliminate the need for proceeding to the third. Affirmative answers to questions 1 and 2 should be followed by the engineering and economic studies required in response to questions 3 and 4.

It was achieved with the simple addition of a metal/mineral distribution–size distribution relationship. The efficiency of search for porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits can be greatly increased. A model exploration system is here presented to show how geologic literature data and field surveys can be aided by modern statistical and computer methods. Assuming that major ore deposits occur in clusters, it is possible to evaluate rapidly large areas at modest cost and with minimum investment risk. An example of the success of these methods is given. Clusters of mine density and metal production covering the State of Nevada were plotted and machine contoured. Selection of a 47,300 square-mile area on the Nevada-California border was made. Within this area, detailed analyses were performed, and a 3000 square-mile site was picked for subsequent field examination. To initiate efficiently the field work, 81 stream sediment geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for copper, zinc, and molybdenum. These data established local variance and necessary statistical controls. Following this, a total of 151 geochemical samples were used to survey the 3000 square-mile area. Computer contouring of results directed attention to specific target areas for detailed geologic analysis, property acquisition and drilling. A total of 22 copper-zinc and molybdenum anomalies were identified. Four of these were recommended for further exploration. To date, two have been acquired and drilled and preliminary ore reserve and financial analysis have been made on one. The estimated cost and time for the regional exploration phases leading to these targets were thirty man-weeks and $16,000.

The depressing effects of different inorganic chemicals on the flotation of pyrite have been investigated in this study. The results of the flotation tests indicate that pyrite can be depressed by oxidizing as well as reducing agents under controlled conditions of pH and reagent dosage. Oxidizing reagents such as potassium chromate and potassium dichromate were found to cause complete depression of pyrite in the acidic pH range. These effects are similar to those obtained in the pyrite-cyanide system. A less stable oxidant, potassium permanganate, inhibited the flotation of pyrite at a concentration as low as 0.1 mol/L at all pH values, Addition of reducing chemicals such as ferrous chloride or manganous sulphate to the flotation of pyrite were found to produce depressing effects depending on the additive concentration and pH of the solution.

Deep well disposal is a much used and abused term which is the panacea for wastewater disposal in some minds and creates near hysteria in others. It can be the answer to a difficult waste disposal problem, or if improperly employed, can create more problems than it solves. My purpose in this presentation is to focus on the value and limitations of deep well disposal as expressed by New York State&apos;s experience and policies. To he sure, I feel a place for such practices docs exist if adequate safeguards are utilized. I shall give a broad brush approach to New York&apos;s legislative, geologic and operational concerns and speak briefly on some case histories. I shall not delve deeply into the technological details since I am not an expert in mining exploration or well drilling.

Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve&apos;s Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company&apos;s large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve&apos;s initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve&apos;s operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins. The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of a new 3-yr research program with three primary goals: 1) understanding controls on metal concentrations in the lakes; 2) using mesocosms to test a variety of remediation strategies; and 3) verifying and improving an existing coupled physical-geochemical model with the goal of improving predictions of pit lake water quality. Initial data from two summer surveys in the Main Zone pit lake reveal elevated dissolved metal concentrations (e.g. [Zn] as high as 800 µg/L) present in a two-meter-deep mixed layer, and elevated particulate metal concentrations towards the bottom of the water column. Hydroxide sludge, a byproduct of ARD treatment, is being discharged to the surface waters of the Main Zone pit lake. The sludge sinks rapidly to the lake bottom, leading to deep waters with elevated levels of dissolved O2 and total metals. By contrast, the deep waters of the proximal Waterline pit lake are mildly reducing, manifested by depletion of O2 and elevated levels of dissolved Fe. These reducing conditions have led to elevated levels of As (up to 1500 µg/L) in Waterline pit deep waters. The contrasting behavior of these two pit lakes, as well as the processes controlling metal concentrations in the lakes, will be discussed.

Zoning and environmental restrictions on land usage now make open- pit quarrying more and more difficult, especially near urban areas. One option for quarry operators is to go underground for mineral production. While underground-mining costs are higher than those for open-cut work, there are several compensating advantages. In many cases it is possible to produce the same material underground without affecting land values, and the surface is preserved for industrial, residential, or agricultural purposes. Proper planning can yield underground sites which have great potential value for industrial plants, warehouses, or other business uses. It is essential to plan underground mineral extraction using a three-dimensional modular-room architectural concept to fully exploit secondary space utilization. Prior to the start of underground mining an operator must make a careful geological engineering study to deter- mine the suitability of the deposit and must prepare a plan for safe and economical mining for the purpose of converting to secondary usage.

The key to concentrator automation is practical means for obtaining continuous assay data from concentrator streams. The technique most successfully used is x-ray fluorescence analysis. The practical reality of on-stream x-ray analysis has been achieved through effort over the past twenty years, marked by an occasional breakthrough, but more typically a step-by-step development to which many individuals and organizations have contributed. The net result of this progress is the present capability to install on-stream x-ray analyzer systems on a turn-key basis. It is now possible to provide all components of an x-ray analysis system as a completely engineered unit which can be put into immediate use, minimizing needs for specialized application know- ledge to benefit from continuous assaying in process control. The economic factors which influence the choice of system and limitations of the x-ray fluorescence technique for slurry analysis are reviewed.

Signal processing is a major challenge for In-Seam Seismic (ISS) technique. Fourier Transform is an important tool for signal processing such as frequency analysis. However, for ISS signal, localized information, especially time-frequency localization is even more important. Wavelet Transform (WT) provides another approach to study the signal as a function of frequency and time. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the application and advantages of WT to seismic signal analysis. Both transmission and reflection signals from coal mine void detection experiments are analyzed. The results illustrate that WT appears to be a powerful and convenient method for the in-seam seismic signal processing.

Waste solutions from sea water desalination processes are enriched in minerals by a factor of two or three. This suggests that extraction of selected mineral components from the concentrated brine might help pay desalination costs. The possible recovery of gold has received particular mention. Sonstadt, in 1872, reported the gold content of sea water as 65,000 micrograms per cubic meter, or 65,000 parts per trillion. At $35 an ounce, this is equivalent to $0.065 per ton of sea water. Fritz Haber, however, after his abortive venture to restore Post War I Germany to economic health by recovering gold from the sea, concluded the gold content was 4 micrograms per cubic meter. Haber&apos;s analysis is equivalent to 0.0004 cent per ton. In the past 10 years, investigators using advanced analytical techniques reported from 4 to 27 micrograms per cubic meter. Our brief experiments to determine a threshhold value for the gold in sea water employed solvent extraction for initial concentration, evaporation of the gold-loaded organic for further concentration, and atomic absorption analysis of the gold in the concentrated organic. Radioactive gold was used as a tracer for monitoring the gold through the concentration and analytical steps. Our method established that sea water contains about 11 parts gold per trillion parts sea water, or 0.001 cent worth per ton. This agrees closely with results of recent studies by other investigators employing ion exchange resins and neutron activation techniques.

Titanium is a metal of increasing worldwide strategic importance. The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech of the University of Montana is currently directing two titanium research initiatives. The first program, Titanium Extraction Mining and Process Engineering Initiative (TEMPER), is focused on producing low cost titanium through the identification and development of new mining, beneficiation and extraction technologies which will significantly reduce the cost of titanium production. This will directly benefit worldwide commercial applications. Secondly, CAMP is evaluating new technologies for fabrication of titanium utilizing the Free Form Titanium Fabrication (FFTF) initiative. These technologies may drastically reduce the cost and time to manufacture titanium components. Because of the high strength to weight ratio of titanium coupled with its superior corrosion characteristics, these programs will be of vital importance to expanding the commercial and strategic applications of titanium. An overview of these two new titanium initiatives will be presented in this paper.
