Numerous lead-zinc-barite-fluorite ore deposits, with simple mineralogy and roughly concordant with bedding, are found widely distributed all over the world, having been denominated and well described as "stratiform deposits" or "strata-bound ore bodies", not having any genetic relationship. During several years, its origin has been discussed, without getting to general agreement regarding the main mining districts of this type. Through studies made of large stratiform deposits in the United States, Europe and Russia, it has been found that there are, within this classification, syngenctic diagenetic and epigenetic ore bodies. During the Symposium about the genesis of the stratiform lead-zinc-fluorite-barite deposits, carried out in New York in 1966, Frank G. Snyder (1), presented an excellent analysis of the theories of the origin of these deposits and of the evaluation of the criteria regarding classification. As per his definitions (Table 1), "a deposit is syngenetic if formed by processes similar to and simultaneously with the enclosing rock, epigenetic if introduced into a pre-existing rock and a diagenetic origin implies deposition of metals with the host sediments but with recrystallization, rearrengement and limited migration".

Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55% are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper’s goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with SiO2between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with SiO2 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 0.95 during production.

The response of 174 domestic water supplies to longwall mining of the Pittsburgh coal seam was compared to various physical parameters. Sixty-four percent of domestic water supplies returned to service without the need for intervention, while thirty six percent required intervention to reestablish a suitable water supply. Domestic well response is strongly correlated with the topographic setting. Valley wells showed the least effect while hilltop wells showed the greatest effect. Well response was also found to be correlated to the location of the well above the mining with greater effects observed in zones of surface tension and compression, and fewer effects in zones which are stress neutral. Ground water supplies remained unaffected or were re¬established at 149 of 150 sites, indicating that ground water resources remain available to domestic wells after mining. Results of this study support the stress-relief model of ground water flow in the Northern Appalachian Basin. Longwall mining's effect on this system is to locally increase fracture connectivity in the near surface zone. This may shift the zones of saturated fractures to greater depths beneath hilltops and hillsides, and increase recharge and storage in valleys. General trends in well response are predict¬able utilizing the stress relief conceptual model, the topographic setting of the water sources, and their location over the mine.

The competitiveness of power production from lignite depends on the ability of coal industry to meet CO2 emissions limits, as specified by the Kyoto protocol. According to the National Allocation plan issued by EC, power plants should reduce CO2 emissions to a certain level, other-wise they will be obliged to cover the difference buying CO2 certificates through the Emission Trading Scheme. These charges will increase the operating cost of current units, as well as the investment cost for new units. To predict the increase in the marginal cost of electric power produced from the current plants of Western Macedonia, an emissions factor (CO2 t/MWh) for various units has been computed. Based on the algorithm used, this factor depends on the calorific value of the lignite, the efficiency of the power plant and the oxidation factor of the unit. For lignite plants with efficiency ~37%, CO2 emissions factor ranged from 1.19 t/MWh to 1.32 t/MWh. The increase in the marginal cost of kWh, as compared to the values of CO2 certificates, is higher in units fed with low quality lignite and worsens if the efficiency of the unit is low too. Also the presence of calcareous minerals in lignite increases the CO2 emissions and consequently the cost of power generation.

Zeolites are common secondary components of a variety of igneous rocks. However it is extremely rare to reach such abundances to form a rock. An unusual rock composed almost entirely of natrolite, a zeolite mineral, has been discovered ; in a mountainous terrain called the Kop mountain range in the eastern Turkey. In the region, country rocks are essentially metamorphic rocks. These unique rocks are resulted through metasomatic changes acted on microdioritic and andesitic parent rocks occurring generally as dikes and stocks in the country rocks consisting chiefly of serpentinized harzburgites. These metasomatic rocks are investigated with respect to their mineralogical, petrographical, and geochemical characteristics. These products consisting dominantly of natrolite are termed "natrolitite" and those containing additional pargasite, an amphibol mineral, are termed "pargasite-bearing natrolitite or pargasitic natrolitite ". The dikes and stocks show concentric zoning, each of which has distinct chemical and mineralogical compositions: Na2O and H2O contents show enrichment outward from the core to chill zones whereas, SiO2 and CaO show depletion. Mineralogically, plagioclase variety, abundance and chemistry change outwards from the center due to partial to complete replacement of natrolite: anorthite contents of plagioclases decrease outward, which is indicated by A1203 and CaO decrease and SiO2 and Na2O increase, showing inverse relationship with increasing natrolite content.

INTRODUCTION The term "Rapid Underground Excavation" is generally associated with high speed tunnel advance with large volumes of excavation, and indeed this is the type of work for which most of the recent innovations in methods and new machinery have been developed. However, the term applies as well to any underground excavation process that results in an earlier project completion than would be expected with conventional methods, and hopefully with a decrease in total unit excavation cost. Often significant progress has been made during the primary stages of an underground construction project and then an inordinate amount of time and effort has been expended on small units of "miscellaneous" excavation which has delayed the overall project completion and escallated overall unit costs. Construction at the Nevada Test Site of the Atomic Energy Commission for underground testing frequently requires significant amounts of so called "miscellaneous mining" such as short access drifts, cross cuts, alcoves, niches and concrete keyways. Many of the keyways must be excavated without disturbing the rock beyond the excavation lines and construction scheduling often dictates that much of the work must be accomplished without disturbing sensitive electronic equipment already installed. Exxon Minerals Co. was exploring for mineral deposits in Precambrian terranes of the US portion of the Lake Superior region in the late 1960s. Exploration drilling and other activities had been concentrated on massive sulfide prospects in northeastern Minnesota, but general exploration studies and competitor scouting were conducted in other areas of the region. These activities drew attention to Wisconsin in 1969 when it became apparent that Bear Creek Mining Co. had made a discovery near Ladysmith in the northwestern part of the state. Observation of their drill hole pattern suggested that a massive sulfide deposit, since named the Flambeau deposit (Schwenk, 1977), had been found. With this background, Exxon initiated an exploration program for Precambrian massive sulfide deposits in northern Wisconsin in 1970 (Figs. 1 and 2). Northern Wisconsin is extensively mantled by Pleistocene glacial drift and bedrock outcrop is sparse. Other than iron mines in the extensive iron formations along the Wisconsin-Michigan border and Jackson County, no significant mineral deposits were known in the Wisconsin portion of the Precambrian Shield until the discovery of the Flambeau deposit. Until the mid-1970s, the only specific published literature on the Wisconsin Precambrian consisted of old outcrop locations and descriptions in journals of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (Chamberlain, 1882; [ ] Weidman, 1907; Hotchkiss, 1915) and the summary maps of Dutton and Bradley (1970).

Mining-related earthy bodies in contact with the atmosphere are now counted, generally, as minesoils. Because soils within this broad category are extremely young the influence of parent material is stronger than in older soils, where climate, organisms, and topography have had time to interact with near-surface rocks to form more distinctly differentiated profiles. Understanding of minesoil properties and processes is aided by definitions of rock types in terms of chemical, physical, and mineralogical characteristics that are, with some degree of consistency, translatable into soils. Geological correlations based on age or sedimentary sequences are helpful if they assure details of mineralogy and lithology, but our pedologic objectives demand that any conflicts involving rock types must be resolved in favor of distinctions having strongest implications for soil properties after mining. Chemically this approach emphasizes accounting of potential acid-base status, plant nutrient availability by adapted and calibrated extraction procedures, and absence of biotoxins. Physically it anticipates particle sizes, shapes, and arrangements in readily pervious soil profiles that will favor plant growth with desired levels of moisture and oxygen. Concurrently we are considering soil property suitability for uses other than growth of plants. Above all we need to be able to predict pedogenic processes in the particular environment, including rate as well as direction of chemical and physical change.

In order to investigate production decline in Tarkwa Goldfields Ltd., located in a tropical rain forest, amongst other areas, a health survey was conducted with the aim to see 1. The health status of the workers. 2. Which parameters carry the most information about the health situation and which of them can be applied easily during screening programmes. 3. What steps could be taken to improve the situation. In all 249 workers were investigated. A non-invasive method involving taking of body weight and arterial blood pressure was used. All subjects were required to answer a questionaire. Emphasis was placed on the history of malaria and diarrhoea within the last six months. Both management and workers co-operated fully. Another set of 110 workers from a neighbouring tyre factory were also investigated for control. Among the underground workers, the percentage body weight loss during a shift increased with decreasing body weight. Dehydration levels could be as much as 4 to 5% of body weight. This could be attributed to the fact that workers took insufficient or no water during the shift. The health status of the mine workers was generally poor and in our opinion malnutrition combined with malaria severely threatens the health and well-being of the workers. Hypertension is also a problem. An improvement in production is intimately linked with the well-being of the workers.

INTRODUCTION The early record of tunnel excavating machines in hard rock tunneling has not been one to particularly brag about. We have all heard the stories of major difficulties when trying to break hard rock with machines at promised advance rates of several times that of conventional drill and blast. Unfortunately, sometimes this has not happened. It has been through this trial of the past generations disappointments that today's TBM's have evolved to their present high level of performance in a wide range of ground conditions. Today's machines offer much increased reliability and durability. This translates into high availability to the tunnel contractor. Although there still are occasional disappointments being reported, the state of the art is that reliable and predictable machine excavation of rock now is both a reality and well founded expectation. The most recent editions of Atlas Copco's MINI/MIDI Fullfacer, we feel, make a strong contribution to the reliable performance of todays TBM's---especially in small-size rock tunnels. This report will, 1.) explain the equipment and effect of rock both on the cutting technique and machine performance; 2.) list advantages of the non-circular shape, during and after construction; 3.) list applications in civil and mining industries; 4.) discuss North American experiences, performance and costs; 5.) list advantages over drill and blast and; 6.) discuss briefly lease arrangements.

Lithium requirements in the next few decades for batteries and controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors (CTR) may exceed the availability of the current mineral and brine reserves. It is thus prudent to search for new reserves and resources to satisfy these and future lithium applications. The lithium content of the waters from the Smackover oil field. located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, ranges from 100 to 500 mp/l and could represent a substantial new reserve. Experimental evidence described in the literature indicates that a specific chelating agent dipivaloylmethane (DPM), of the diketone type, has a specific selectivity toward lithium in the presence of other metal ions in aqueous solutions. Based in part on this unique property of dipivaloylmethane, a conceptual design of a full-size plant to extract lithium from the Smackover brine is presented in this paper. This study includes alternate flow-sheet development, design information on the major units of the process, energy requirements, and an economic analysis of a facility capable of producing 106 kg of lithium per year. The economics of three different process concepts depend primarily on the amount of water needing to be evaporated from the initial oil-field feed waters in concentrating the brine. The results, as a function of production rates, are indicated only in a general manner.

INTRODUCTION In both the United States and Canada, a company making a public offering of securities must comply with regulations which have been promulgated by Federal and/or Provincial Legislatures. This paper focuses on the regulations pertaining to reserve reports required by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). SEC RESERVE FILINGS Reserve reports made to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission are the only reserve reports which are directly regulated by the United States government. The requirements for SEC reserve reports are set forth in the filing forms as shown in Appendix A, from Item 17A of SEC Form S-18. These reporting requirements, which are intended to protect the investing public from inaccurate or misleading claims, are primarily oriented to S-1 or other filings for new stock issues but must also be followed for annual 10K reports which must be filed annually by U.S. public corporations as part of the Corporate Annual Report. These undertakings require independent audits of reserves, mine designs, plant facilities and a general economic evaluation of the planned or existing operation as part of the backup documents for filing. One of the rare consensual points among different resource-based economic analytical approaches refers to the strategic role of rent from mineral extraction, as a decisive tool to ensure that the temporary wealth generated in the present can turn into permanent income in the future. For this reason, evaluation, distribution and use of mining rent plays a central role in the sustainable development of mining cities. Brazilian legislation provides for this at the municipal level by means of participation in the financial results of mineral extraction accomplished in these municipalities, with the Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration (CFEM). CFEM is a type of ad valorem royalty, which charges taxes of up to 3% of the net revenue of mineral production. However, legislation does not establish how these resources should be used. Therefore, there is wide variation in the use of CFEM income among Brazilian mining cities. A study from a sample of the 15 largest mining cities in eight Brazilian states made possible identification of two main patterns with regards to the use of CFEM which were labeled "sustained use" and " the pitfall of the single treasury." In that regard, this article discusses the pressuring factors that contribute to these patterns, as well as the institutional arrangements which may be more favorable to inducing more sustained use of CFEM.

A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple- hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosive charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g.,velocity, attenuation, single-hole input pulse), or by back-calculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties encountered are backcalculating individual input pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shorn to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included, improved input pulse determination and propagation laws, and more detailed verifications with field results are required in order to make the program more directly applicable to practical situations.

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduct ion through multilayer (wall and floor of airway consist of several layers of material and rock) and two-surface (dry and wet surfaces) airway wall and airway floor with convective heat and moisture transfer between their surfaces and mine air with time dependent changes of temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for calculation of the surface temperature of any type of surface of airway wall/floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. These solutions are illustrated for the case of general harmonic course of air temperature and humidity. Balance of heat and moisture transfer between surfaces of airway wall and floor and mine air is solved by an iterative method in the partial sections of airway. The temperature and the humidity of mine air on the outlet of each partial section of airway at given time are its resolutions and they are the input data for following partial section. By this way it is possible to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an air way system by relatively simple mathematical apparat.

Conventional zinc concentrates generally contain 5 to 10% Fe, while bulk concentrates can contain up to 20% Fe. As a result, the disposal of iron bearing residues is an integral part of zinc refining operations. The quality of iron residues must comply with ever changing and increasingly stringent environmental legislation. Zinc has been recovered from sulphide concentrates by a hydrometallurgical route for almost one hundred years. The disposal of iron was a major difficulty for the industry for many decades and was directly responsible for low overall zinc recoveries. The introduction of the jarosite process in the mid 1960's allowed for the treatment of neutral leach residues and the precipitation of iron in an easily filterable form. Subsequently, three additional iron precipitation processes have found commercial application in the zinc industry: the goethite process; the paragoethite process; and the hematite process. The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process has been developed for integration with existing roast leach electrowin zinc plants, or as a stand alone facility for the treatment of a wide variety of zinc bearing feed materials. It is essential that these processes allow for the disposal of iron residues in an environmentally acceptable form. This paper describes the integration of the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process with commercially proven iron precipitation processes. The results of laboratory testwork and data from operating plants are presented.

The forces of nature have concentrated sand at various geographical locations that are being mined and processed for a large variety of industrial uses. While most operations serve a number of industries, this paper deals only with the foundry requirements. The forces that have decomposed a source rock, transported this material and redeposited it, have created two general types of sand. These types are classified as the (1) Lake and Bank Sands and (2) Silica Sands. The Lake and Bank sands will contain 92 to 94% Sio2 while silica sands are in excess of 98.5% Si02 and most of the producers wash these sands to up grade their products to 99.5% or better. Included in the Lake and Bank sand would be the river sands that are used primarily for construction purposes. The Foundry Industry is broken down into three types of castings : 1. Grey Iron Foundries The grey iron castings largest market is the automotive industry in Ohio, Northern Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. These castings are poured at temperatures ranging from 2400° to 2700°F. The Silica Sands or the Lake and Bank Sands will satisfy the requirements of the grey iron castings. There are 2 ½ to three million tons per year shipped from the state of Michigan far grey iron castings by the Lake and Bank Sand Producers.

Most bituminous coal mined near Eastern industrial areas requiring high Btu pipeline gas is caking and therefore unsuitable for fixed-bed pressure gasification by present techniques. If the caking property of such coal can be destroyed the resulting fuel can be gasified in a fixed bed at pressure with steam and oxygen as a preliminary step in making a high-Btu gas. To find a practical way to convert strongly caking coals of granular or small lump size to noncaking fuel was the object of this study. In previous work strongly caking coals of 1/8- to 1-1/2-inch size was converted to a noncaking coal char by treatment in a static bed in about 3 hours [1/]and coal of 18-100 Tyler mesh in a fluidized bed in about 5 minutes.[2/] An inert gas such as `steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or a mixture of all three with a small amount of oxygen was used in both studies. In our work a strongly caking bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam of 4-8 Tyler mesh size was converted to a-noncaking form in free-fall in about 2 seconds by dropping it through a countercurrent flow of steam containing 4 to 7 percent oxygen at 1,150°-1,200° F and 300 psig. This method should also be applicable to smaller-sized material.

This paper examines the application of gelatin mixture models to the study of factors such as gravity effects, tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space. The calibration technique of gelatin mixtures, proposed by Richards and Mark in 1966, is applied to the particular problem considered. Similitude relationships between model and prototype are discussed with reference to the constitutive equations describing the physical behavior of the rock mass. The interaction between two openings in a linearly elastic medium, under conditions of plane strain, is used as an illustrative example, with the view of describing the history of stress and deformation changes on the rock medium and lining around a slusher drift while undercuts are made in block caving.

China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.
