The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, “Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate, ” July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing “super’ ‘-concentrates prepared from magnetite or “blue dust” into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloye to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free ) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential

The HB 2500 hydraulic breaker attachment from Atlas Copco Construction Tools features Krupp percussion technology and a service weight of 2,500 kg (5,512 lbs). This makes it ideal for demolition, tunneling, trenching, foundation work, rock mining and secondary breaking. Suitable for carriers in the 29-to 43-t (32-to 47-st) weight class, the HB 2500 accepts maximum hydraulic flow of 219 L/min (58 gpm) at 18 MPa (2,610 psi) of pressure, and delivers an impact rate of up to 550 blows per minute. The HB 2500 features PowerAdapt, a new system that automatically shuts down the breaker in the event that it receives excessive oil pressure from the carrier.

The conditioning of phosphate flotation feed with anionic flotation reagents was identified as a high- priority research topic during a beneficiation work- shop sponsored by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR). FIPR subsequently solicited research proposals to identify the mechanisms of reagent adsorption, to determine scale-up relationships for conditioner design, and to investigate the effect of conditioning variables on reagent adsorption and flotation performance. The two-year research project was awarded to Jacobs Engineering. Somasundaran, Inc., the University of Florida Mineral Resources Research Center, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines assisted Jacobs. Two mechanisms of anionic collector adsorption were detected by spectrographic analyses and confirmed by microcalorimetric measurements. The mechanisms provided a sound technical basis for the empirical practice of conditioning phosphate flotation feed at a high percent solids. Tests performed in laboratory and pilot-scale agitated tanks indicated that power intensity may be used as a reliable scale-up parameter for anionic conditioning of phosphate slurry. Excessive agitator speed during conditioning was found to be detrimental to anionic flotation performance. Some dimensional ratios of anionic conditioners were found to be consistent with good utilization of agitation energy. Laboratory conditioning and flotation tests demonstrated that adsorption of collector onto phosphate and the subsequent recovery of phosphate in anionic flotation were significantly influenced by the quantity and quality of water used in conditioning. Conversely, the quality of water used in flotation was more influential on the recovery of quartz in the concentrate. A comprehensive survey of anionic conditioners and conditioning practice in the Florida phosphate industry was also performed during this project. The study clearly showed that flotation testing with laboratory conditions typical of scientific research gives different results than laboratory testing with simulated plant conditions. The effects of test conditions on laboratory test results should be carefully considered by investigators planning and conducting applied research.

Traditional vat leaching methods have had limited success, primarily due to the high cost of loading and unloading the vats. In general, such batch methods are labor-intensive and costly. Heap leaching has emerged as a viable, low- cost alternative, but low recoveries, normally in the 70% range, offer opportunities for improvement. Also increased regulatory guidlelines for effluent and spent heap leach pads disposal offer potential for alternative methods. The Mackie Vat Leaching Jig (MVLJ) has had its incubation at Ortech International, where bench scale through pilot scale testing continues. Design developments and testwork over the past two years indicate that the time may be right for field trials.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of Investment Value or Use Value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would sell at if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation. The comparable sales and replacement cost approaches used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail us in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

Reliable prediction of wall pressures in a coal silo demands careful characterization of the stress-strain properties of the coal. This paper describes the results of triaxial compression tests on a typical fine-ground coal used in power generation and describes the fitting of several different constitutive models to the data. The fitted parameters for the constitutive models are well suited to application infinite element analyses. The different models are used to give the reader flexibility in choosing a model and to show the shortcomings of some models. To explore the quality of the fitting process, the fitted results are compared with finite element predictions of the triaxial test itself.

Syngenetic concentrations in clastic sediments of valuable mineral particles with specific gravities exceeding that of quartz constitute placer deposits. Two fundamentally different modes of concentration characterize "trap" and "bed" placer variants. Trap placers originate during sediment erosion or reworking. Bed placers form during episodes of sediment accumulation in a variety of depositional environments and lithofacies where mineral supply and fluid dynamics are favorable. Because trap placers are thin and generally limited in area, they rarely yield economic heavy-mineral deposits. They can become economically significant if they contain more valuable "heavies," such as gold, or if they occur within or very close to much larger but characteristically lower-grade bed placers.

Six types of amines were evaluated in the cleaning step of the rougher concentrate for the Crago “Double Float” process in terms of relative selectivity. Selectivity of these amines was ranked based on both batch and locked cycle flotation tests. Two parameters were used for selectivity ranking, the Selectivity Index, SI, and the ratio of insol rejection to the tailings weight percentage, R*. The comparison of the flotation results of the batch tests of the cleaning step of the Crago process for an unsized amine feed generated the following ranking from the most selective to the least selective mine: Quaternary > Primary [ ]Tertiary [ ] Condensate > Ether > Secondary(?).

A comprehensive strategic-planning model was developed for the phosphate strip-mining and chemical operations at White Springs, FL. The computerized model covers orebody modeling, production simulation and financial analysis. The model has several innovative features, including the use of NPV techniques in orebody block economics, the adaptation of the floating-cone method to a floating template for generating dragline mining units automatically, the use of interactive graphics for designing mining units, and the use of a dragline move economics algorithm for the automatic scheduling of mining-unit assignments and moves. The simulation of chemical-plant production uses linear programming and concentrate inventory levels to control mine-operating schedules.

We've used direct current resistivity (DC), electromagnetic (EM), induced polarization (IP), and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) geoelectrical methods to study mine dumps. The results reflect lithology, pore water saturation, and dissolved solids in the pore water. If the pore water has a pH less than 5, conductivity maps can indicate acid generating potential. IP measurements can help distinguish mineralogy in mine dumps, especially concentrations of sulfide minerals. EM and DC can help locate acidic/high TDS groundwater associated with mine dumps. GPR methods failed at the sites we studied in the West. Our own conclusions are augmented by those from the recent literature.

Political risk is an integral part of the mining business in northern Andean countries. Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations require good political-risk information, a thorough political-risk-management plan and a strategy to deal with political-risk perception on the part of the investing public. Colombia is perceived as about the riskiest place in the world to do business. A selection of recent headlines reads: “Colombia on the brink” (Economist, 1998), “Colombia’s ship of state is sinking” (Insight on the News, 1998), or simply “Bad news” (US Catholic, 1998). The World’s Most Dangerous Places rates Colombia as “currently the most dangerous place in the Western Hemisphere, and perhaps the world” (Aral and Pelton,1998). And many prospective investors and analysts say to Greystar Resources: “Yes, we love your results, but Colombia?”

The first part of this article is a review of industry techniques and styles during the past 50 years. It is followed by my career history during the same period. The second part covers my ideas about what works in mineral exploration. These include estimates about discovery costs, thoughts about education of explorationists, organization of exploration groups and my opinions about the relative value of exploration techniques. Evolution of exploration techniques [Table 1] shows the evolution of mineral exploration techniques and styles from 1950 to 2000. During the first half of that period, there was a progressive increase in exploration drilling. During the second half, there was a decrease in prospecting and an increase in high technology, indirect exploration and a rapid increase in discovery cost.

Introduction A longwall mining demonstration currently in progress in the Herrin (No.6) Coal Member near Benton, Illinois, involves the extraction of three adjacent panels by the longwall method. The first panel was completed in May, 1977. The Illinois State Geological Survey is involved in this project for two reasons: (1) to detail the geology of the roof and relate the geologic features to the behavior of the roof during mining operations, and (2) to study the nature and occurrence of coal balls (carbonate petrifactions of peat) encountered during this demonstration. General Geology of Area The stratigraphic sequence of beds immediately above the No. 6 Coal in this area, ranging from oldest to youngest, is: gray shale (Energy Shale Member), black carbonaceous shale (Anna Shale Member), and argillaceous limestone (Brereton Limestone Member) (figure 1). In some areas of the mine, where one of these units may rest directly on the coal, one or more of the members is absent from the stratigraphic sequence. The nature of roof for the area is shown in figure 2. It is greatly exaggerated in the vertical direction. The Walshville Channel, 11.3 km west of this mine, was a river at least in part deposited at the same time as the coal. The gray shale wedge on top of the coal, which thins away from the channel, is thought to represent an overbank deposit of mud from the channel. The next layer deposited on top of the gray shale, and on the coal not covered by gray shale, is the black carbonaceous shale, believed to represent a mud deposited in a brackish environment. "Temporary mechanical ventilation is one of the fundamental requirements in guaranteeing a healthy atmosphere in underground construction works in order to protect the health of persons working on the site. It is therefore essential to conceive a system which meets the requirements of the whole of the worksite and for all phases of work which takes into account all aspects pertaining to its design, dimensioning, justification, installation, maintenance and validation. In doing so, the ventilation design and the selected apparatus to be installed shall meet with the degree of health protection and the quality of air of the worksite as defined by the legislation in force in France, through limiting the concentration of the different pollutants associated with the site activities. Consequently, when presenting a mechanical ventilation project, all of the participating parties and especially the contractor make a commitment to guarantee sufficient volumes (or airflow rates) of fresh (non-polluted and oxygenated) air and extracted (polluted) air in order to meet these limitations and maintain them in all conceivable site configurations. This article sets out the most important aspects of the implementation of a ventilation project from the initial design stage through to its application, discussing French legislation, ventilation principles, calculations and techniques with regards to underground construction sites. BASICS OF VENTILATION Mechanical ventilation studies are concerned with all of the site workstations and work phases which are sources of pollution and apply to all zones of the underground worksite with the goal of maintaining the concentration or composition of this pollution below the permitted levels and comply with the following three basic principles which are complementary to one another without being in contradiction. •,The first principle consists in eliminating or limiting as much as possible the emission of any polluting, irritant, or dangerous substances, by specifying appropriate construction techniques and equipment (use of electric motors, combustion engine equipment: filters, tanks, catalyzers, use of less polluting explosives, damping down dust with water or wetting products, damping down and diluting certain gases using water mists). •,The second principle is designed to capture residual polluting substances emitted close to the source in order to prevent them from spreading into the worksite atmosphere (extraction ventilation with ducting up to the source – upstream of the extractor fan – and use of downstream filters before expelling the polluted air to the exterior). •,The third principle involves accompanying the capture of the pollutants with additional blowing ventilation specific treatment of substances dissipated by and distant from the source of pollution (acceleration of the drift air flow in order to confine dust and better capture it, supply ventilation with ducting in order to dilute the gases emitted and discharge them to the exterior)."

With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. More than 95 percent of all the barite mined and produced is used in the petroleum industry as “drillers mud.” The remaining barite is used in the industrial and medical markets. Therefore, the amount of drilling activity is a good indicator of the health and growth of the barite industry. The four major barite-producing countries in the world are China, the United States, India and Morocco. In 2005, the average number of drilling rigs exploring for oil and gas increased by about 15 percent over the average number in 2004. This increase in oil and gas exploration has resulted in a higher demand for barite and an increase in barite production.

South Bulga is a new longwall operation located in the Hunter Valley coal-mining region in Southeastern Australia. The mine’s objective is to achieve productivity levels significantly higher than the current industry average. From the day longwall production began, South Bulga’s output was below both budget and industry expectations, primarily because of the poor performance of the conveyor system. In the past, conveyor systems have been seen as an adjunct to the mine plan, not as an integral part. At past production levels, this approach may have been acceptable. In today’s mining operations, the conveyor system must be treated as integral and vital to the mining operation. The conveyor system is analogous to the vascular or circulatory system of the human body. Of itself, the system does not do anything, but if it is not functioning satisfactorily, the mine cannot operate.

The four top barite-producing countries in the world are China, India, Morocco and the United States. China is currently the largest exporter of barite followed by India. More than 95 percent of the barite mined today is used by the petroleum industry as driller’s mud. The rest is used in the industrial market and the medical field. Most of the barite mined in the United States is in Nevada. This year, mining activity has increased due to an increase in oil exploration/development. This was caused by an increase in the crude oil prices.

Minerals contribute to the U.S. gross domestic prod-uct (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. In 2008, the estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 1.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $14.3 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. For instance, continued declines in the U.S. housing market during 2008 were reflected in further reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone (mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction), and those associated with the related manufacture of goods, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard ? all used by the housing industry. The widespread effects of the slowing domestic economy became more apparent in the last three to six months of 2008 when prices for many mineral commodities declined sharply after reaching record highs earlier in the year, indicating significantly lower demand for those materials or products containing them.
