In July 1997, Krupp Canada obtained the contract to design and supply the conveyor system for Chile's Los Pelambres copper mine expansion project. Progress on the overland conveyor system is currently on schedule. It is a challenging task to convey copper ore from an open-pit mine located on a mountain site 3,000 m (9,840 ft) above sea level down 1,300 m (4,265 ft) to the processing plant at the valley floor below. The Los Pelambres conveyor system moves copper ore at a rate of 8.7 ktlh (9,600 stph) and at a speed of 6 ml sec (1,180 ftlmin) for 12,750 m (41,830 ft). The distance is divided in three conveyors, each 1,800 mm (71 in.) wide. The largest conveyor is 6 km (3.7 miles) long. To protect against avalanches and rockslides, the conveyors run through a 12-km- (7.4-mile-) long tunnel system. The lowest of the three conveyors is equipped with a shuttling head end. With this, the conveyor discharge point can be moved back and forth by 100 m (330 ft), allowing it to build up a longitudinal stockpile at its end. To meet the extreme design parameters, the limits of conveyor design had to be pushed to record-setting marks. For instance, the ST-7800 steel cord conveyor belt is the strongest belt ever installed in a conveyor system. A total drive power of 25 MW (33,535 hp), consisting of 10 2.5-MW (3,352-hp) drives, is included in the design plans. In loaded condition, the electric motors act as generators and feed electric energy back into the power grid. The motors are controlled by variable frequency inverters that provide an infinite adjustment of motor speed. This technology allows starting and stop- ping the conveyors precisely along predetermined acceleration and deceleration ramps. This is done so harmful belt jerking and stress waves can be avoided.

The purpose of geochemical research in the Alabama copper belt is to re-evaluate geochemical prospecting methods as related to igneous and metamorphic rocks in a humid climate. It is also a correlation of laboratory research on copper mineral solubility with geochemical anomalies over known mineral deposits. Geochemical prospecting in warm humid climates involves different problems and conditions than geochemical prospecting in semiarid areas. Stems and others (1972) reported soil surveys in a humid tropical environment in Bahia, Brazil, were not effective in outlining areas of copper mineralization. Clarke (1971) reported false anomalies in lateritic soils in Alabama over mafic rocks. Bjorklund (1971) reported biogeochemical sampling in Finland was ineffective in detailed work outlining potential mineralized areas, although it may serve to indicate regional areas of high mineral potential. During this investigation, water, stream sediments, residual soil, and organic matter, mainly twigs, were collected from three known copper-mineralized areas. Samples were selected so as to cross mineralized outcrops and results were correlated with copper stability charts as reported by Silman (1958) and Schmitt (1962). The geochemical research performed in Alabama should be applicable to other humid areas. Geologic, Climatic, and Pedologic Setting The area of investigation is in the southern end of the Appalachian eugosyncline in eastern Alabama. It includes the Hatchet Creek prospect, Pyriton mining district, and Stone Hill copper mine. The copper mineralization is in calcium-rich metasediments that lie along the western flank of a high rank metamorphic belt. All three deposits are in the uplands of the Ashland Plateau section of the Piedmont physiographic province. The Hatchet Creek copper prospect (Clarke, 1963; 1971) consists of three mineralized areas that contain pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite in small crisscrossing veinlets.

JNARDDC has evaluated bauxite deposits of India from the geo-technological point of view. During the evaluation studies, it was observed that bauxite deposits are associated with saprolite resources. During bauxite mining, various low-grade materials such as saprolite, laterite and low-grade bauxite are generated. These materials typically have low-alumina, high-iron oxide and high-silica content. Owing to their inferior quality, these materials cannot be used for alumina production and hence remain unutilized at the mine site. For the present study, the saprolite samples were collected from the Western Ghats bauxite deposits in India. The sintering studies were conducted on saprolite granules using a variety of parameters. The sintered granules were characterized, and their properties determined. The test results showed that bulk density, apparent density, porosity and refractoriness (PCE 1645–1659 °C) of the aggregates were within the range of refractory specifications. The feasibility tests carried out at the refractory industry indicated that the developed aggregates are suitable as refractory material and can substitute for calcined clay. Currently, high-purity clay resources used in the refractory industry are limited and fast exhausting; therefore, the industry is likely to face an acute shortage of raw materials, which will become more critical in the future. Therefore the sintered granules (aggregates) developed from saprolite, which is a mining waste, provide a low-cost, eco-friendly solution for the fast-exhausting resources of the high-purity clays. The developed process may change the Indian bauxite mining scenario because saprolite may substitute as a potential raw material for the refractory industry.

In Japanese tunneling history, it has commonly been accepted that the long-round driving is difficult due to the complicated geological condition. Therefore, the maximum past record has been less than 3 m per round. A new record of advance was established in the 99 m2 headrace tunnel of Imaichi Water Power Station Project with an advance of 239.5 m in a month by drilling 3.9 m deep blast holes. The geology of the headrace tunnel composed of pyroxine andesite (ie. 960-1770 kg/cm2, VP3.1-4.3 km/s) which had several clay seams and open cracks and was moderately weathered. Automatic shotcrete machine was used for shotcreting. Rock support was specified according to the N.A.T.M. with each different rock type. The contractor achieved a remarkable tunneling advance not earlier experienced in Japan.

Malthus, an eighteenth century economist, predicted a rather dismal future for the world. It was his contention food supplies would not be sufficient for the population of the world because the economy of a nation grew arithmetically while population increased geometrically. As a consequence, within a relatively few years mass famine would spread throughout the world. This prophecy, based on an agrarian economic situation, did not come true at least insofar as the Western World was concerned. In largo measure, the salvation of our part of the earth resulted from the growth engendered by the Industrial Revolution. Throughout much of today's world, however, the Malthusian theory seems to be coming true. The advantages and benefits of the Industrial Revolution have net reached all nations. Further, the situation has been compounded by the benefits of modern medicine. This has reduced child mortality and extended life expectancy, but placed no limitations on births in the developed countries, child mortality has declined to 2 percent and adult life expectancy has doubled, but education and general prosperity have resulted in voluntary limitations on pregnancies thus partly offsetting the increased chance of survivals Even so, the present rate of population increase in Europe is approximately 6 percent per decade, and somewhat higher in the U.S., Japan, and other developed countries. The world as a whole, however, is expected to double its population by the year 2000, This would imply a rate of increase in the less developed countries approximately four times that in Europe.

"South Africa possess the biggest fluorspar reserves in the world followed closely by China. In light of the current commodity downturn this paper explores the use of Dense Media Separation (DMS) as a coarse pre-concentration method for two fluorspar deposits located in South Africa in which the dominant gangue is carbonate present in the form of dolomite and calcite. Heavy Liquid Separation indicated that conventional pre-concentration of the drill core samples from both deposits would result in unacceptably high fluorite CaF2 losses. At a maximum CaF2 loss to floats of 5% the benefit of DMS would be economically marginal and difficult to justify as a conventional pre-concentrator. In light of cashflow constraints, a twin flowsheet was proposed for the sole purposes of upfront cash generation in which the majority (67-77%) of the CaF2 would report to a high grade flotation plant in 38-41% of the mass whilst the rejects would be stockpiled for flotation at a later stage. Considering the proposed twin flowsheet approach the high grade product split was achieved using DMS and this paper documents the challenges encountered and results achieved. INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the commercial term for the mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF2). Worldwide production of fluorspar is dominated by four countries namely China, Mexico, Mongolia and South Africa. Although South Africa is the fourth largest producer, it has the largest fluorspar reserves closely followed by China (U.S. Geological Survey, 2017a). Fluorspar is broadly categorized into two grades namely acid grade also referred to as acidspar (>97% CaF2); and sub-acid grade (ceramic and metallurgical grade) commonly referred to as metspar (=97% CaF2). Acid grade fluorspar is used for the production of hydrofluoric acid (HF) which in turn is used for the manufacture of fluorocarbons and semi-conductors in the electronics industry; metal processing; the production of insecticides, herbicides and cleaning detergents, and the manufacture of uranium tetrafluoride used to concentrate the uranium isotope 235 for use as a nuclear fuel (British Geological Survey 2010; Miller 2001). Ceramic grade fluorspar (85-95% CaF2) is used in the ceramic industry as a flux and opacifier in the production of glass and enamels. Ceramic grade fluorspar is also used to make coatings for welding rods and as a flux in the steel industry. Metallurgical grade fluorspar (60-85% CaF2) is primarily used in the steel industry as flux to reduce the melting temperature and remove impurities in steel making. Similarly metallurgical grade fluorspar is also used as flux in cement production to reduce energy consumption (British Geological Survey 2010; Miller 2001)."

The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).

This paper presents and discusses some of the computer models developed and currently used at the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). These include the performance models for full and partial face machines. Examples of input and output of these models will be illustrated for typical mining operations by using machines such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Continuous Miners (CM), Marietta borer miners and longwall drum shearers. The general approach to modeling and the available models are discussed and some examples of these models are presented. The comparison between the estimated and achieved performance, as well as the degree of improvement in the performance due to balancing and modification in cutterhead design are also discussed.

Interlocking material balances on complex mineral dressing plants greatly assist in metallurgical investigations: indeed, without such a balance, there is no firm basis upon which to base process performance evaluations. To achieve balances both qualitative and quantitative data must be rationalised in conjunction with the process flowsheet. WSL has developed a range of programs to evaluate interlocking material balances. However, to obtain maximum benefit from the balances, answers of direct value at the process level must be provided: WSL has developed also a range of programs for this purpose. Practical examples are given, which illustrate the benefits obtained from process balances.

The mine plan for an underground longwall mine plan usually requires a longwall panel conveyor that begins operation at its maximum length and gradually shortens over the life of the panel. Current mine plans around the United States require initial panel conveyor lengths of up to 4500 m (15,000 ft) and capacities of up to 3.2 kt/h (3500 stph). Because these conveyors are constantly being moved from panel to panel, their components must be as compact and light as possible, and the design must be flexible enough to be modified as new terrain and conditions are met. In the past, when drive horsepowers or belt tensions were exceeded due to conveyor length, a new flight would be added, including additional belt storage units. In some cases, this led to as many as three flights installed in a single longwall panel. As the longwall retreated through each flight, mining was required to stop during removal of the drives and storage units. This sometimes meant several days of lost production. Intermediate drive technology was developed to eliminate this excessive downtime and still keep conveyor belts, motors, pulleys and other components as small as possible. With intermediate drives placed along the carrying side of the conveyor, belt and motor sizes are kept as small as possible, and only one storage unit is needed. Most importantly, as the longwall retreats through a booster drive station, it can generally be removed in a regular downtime slot and no additional production time is lost.

Tunnels are defined as underground passages made without removing the overlying materials. From time immemorial men have driven tunnels for mining purposes. Even today tunnels are the building blocks for underground mines. The total length of such a network of tunnels in a mine may add up to 10-100 miles! In addition to this, rapid development of vehicular traffic, needs for air raid protection and metropolitan traffic problems have given a great impetus to underground tunnel construction. But for the successful drivage of any tunnel an adequate air environment has always been and remains an essential prerequisite. This is particularly true for tunnels in mines which are driven in gas bearing strata often at a substantial depth from the surface. An adequate air environment is designed to promote the health, safety and comfort of workers which results in greater productivity and efficiency. Its legal definition varies from country to country but, in general, it means the provision of sufficient circulating air, often at specified velocities, to maintain: (i) at least 19% oxygen in the working areas (ii) Concentration of pollutants, e.g., methane, carbon monoxide, respirable dust, etc. below specified limits. Table 1 shows the maximum allowable concentrations for some of these pollutants.1 (iii) Temperature and relative humidity below specified limits. Ventilation of tunnels in mines assumes ever. greater importance today because of increased mechanization and concentration of output which leads to higher rate of production of inflammable gases and respirable dust. Southern Oklahoma (including the Arbuckle Mountains) has outcrops of rocks representing Precambrian, Paleozoic, and Cretaceous ages. Thus, rocks of every geologic age in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras, except the Jurassic and Triassic Periods, are present in south-central Oklahoma. With rocks of such an enormous age range present in a relatively small geographic area, it is little wonder that a wide variety of economic rock and mineral resources are locally present. This report will describe the occurrence, mining, processing, and end-uses (dictated by chemical and physical properties) of the Precambrian Troy Granite, the Cambrian Royer Dolomite and Fort Sill Limestone, Ordovician silica sands of the Simpson Group, Ordovician limestones of the Viola Springs and Welling Formations, and Ordovician Sylvan Shale. In general, the more the end-use depends upon chemical composition and purity, the greater the price that can be demanded for such-minerals. The not-so-successful attempts to mine zinc, manganese, copper, and iron from the Arbuckle Mountains also will be discussed briefly, and I will provide a sermonette on analytical chemistry and its usefulness to corporate CEOs. I may be one of the few persons at this Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals who is not a professional geologist. I am an analytical chemist specializing in geochemistry. In particular, I investigate trace elements in rocks and their consequences in industrial processes. As such, I have consulted to the mining industry (and their clients) for two decades, always with the intent of improving service and product quality.

During the last 30 years, at least ten authors have dealt with startup ("ramp-up') times for minerals beneficiation, hydrometallurgical, and/or pyrometallurgical plants. Most have attempted to identity the reasons for delays and some have suggested attributes common to successful startups, as well as those shared by unsuccessful ones. The most recent has advanced a project characterization matrix as a predictive tool for qualified users. This paper will summarize past work, will review cause and effect, will outline an approach for refining our ability to avoid costly delays, and will seek guidance from professionals most likely to use such a tool. INTRODUCTION During the last few decades, many billions of dollars have been lost by investors in mineral industry projects that did not perform as well as their developers had hoped. The most common form of failure has been the inability to generate a profit quickly, and delayed achievement of planned production rate has been the chief cause. Minerals processing projects are by no means the only kind of plant to suffer from startup delays, as some authors cited in this paper considered inorganic chemical plants and other types of facilities. Furthermore, mines are not without fault and there have been many that were closed after years of disappointing performance. However, our interests as a group are most sharply focused on mineral processing and our database for such projects is relatively extensive. It is sufficient to say that the conclusions made or repeated in the following text can be readily extended to most types of projects.

This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.

As the techniques and resolution for three-dimensional spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional X-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of 10 µm can be achieved with the use of microfocus X-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam X-ray microtomography system was installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility was designed to obtain 2,048 by 2,048-pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind instrument can be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for many applications, such as three-dimensional liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and the air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of X-ray microtomography not only allows for the quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allows, for the textural characterization and determination of phase continuity. This paper presents information regarding the current use of this new facility and a review of potential applications for the advanced analytical system. X. Huang (1997) recently suggested a poroelastic model for simulating the hydraulic fracturing breakdown pressure. His paper began with a discussion questioning Haimson and Fairhurst's (H&F) model. He claimed that the H&F model failed to lead to the Hubbert and Willis (H&W) model as[ a --> 0.] Huang also tried to explain why the H&F model could only work for special types of rock conditions. He pointed out that one possible reason could be that the Terzaghi's effective-stress concept had been adopted. The H&F model (Haimson and Fairhurst, 1969) was derived under the conditions that the borehole wall is fully penetrated (pp = pi) and a drained state is realized (steady pore-pressure field). Cui et al. (1997a) demonstrated that, under drained conditions, the total stresses in the penetrating poroelastic model (identical to the H&F model) degenerate into their counterparts in the elastic model (identical to the H&W model) as [a -- 0.] However, the effective-stress conditions are different for both of these models, because different pore-pressure conditions at the borehole wall were adopted. In the H&W model, p = po was assumed, i.e., the pore pressure field is not disturbed; but pp = pi was assumed in the H&F model. Assuming that Terzaghi's effective-stress controls tensile failure (that was the hypothesis adopted in both the H&F and the H&W models), only the following two special drained poroelastic cases may degenerate into the H&W model for very small a: • when the pore pressure at the borehole wall remains at the same level as the virgin pore pressure for a penetrating model and when the borehole wall is simply impermeable (i.e., the nonpenetrating model, Cui et al., 1997b). Therefore, simply setting a = 0 in the H&F model generally does not lead to the same problem described by the H&W model. On the other hand, when the porepressure boundary conditions do not correspond to the ones in the H&W model, a degeneration of the poroelastic model to the H&W model as [a – 0] should be questionable. The pore pressure at the borehole wall is generally dependent on the injection-fluid pressure and the penetrating conditions at the borehole wall, such as the existence of a filter-cake. For an impermeable wall, pp is independent of Pi, and it is basically an unknown [(how¬ever, pp -- po as t --oo).] For a fully permeable wall, pp is the same as Pi. Between these two extremes, pp should be a function of p; and the permeable condition of the borehole wall, which may be dependent of the leak-off coefficient cf. (the range of cf is from 0 to 1). Theoretically, for a rock with low permeability, a penetrating borehole wall is still possible. For saturated porous materials with very low values of a, poroelasticity shows that a pore pressure will be built up due to the stress concentration subjected to a nonhydrostatic in situ stress field (Cheng et al., 1993). This phenomenon is known as the Skempton effect. The variation of the pore pressure may be evaluated by [AP = 3 B(A rr + 06ee + A (Y,,)] (1) where B is the Skempton pore pressure coefficient. This pore pressure variation dissipates as time increases (it is totally gone as the drained state is approached). The rate of the dissipation mainly rely on the permeability of the formation. The dissipation is very slow for tight formations because their permeability is very low, and it is fast for rocks of high permeability. According to our analyses, the time period for this process could be from seconds (for sandstone's) to a couple of days (for stales). One possible reason that the H&C model did not agree well with the experimental results for rocks with low permeability might be that the time interval between the application of the loading and the fluid injection had not been long enough for the dissipation of the Skempton effect. The effective-stress law basically defines how much pore pressure contributes to the total stress. The difference between Terzaghi's effective stress and Biot's effective stress is that 100% of the pore pressure contributes to the total stress in Terzaghi's definition, while only a certain portion of the pore pressure ((ap) goes to the total stress in Biot's definition. Therefore, when the pore pressure at the boretole wall (pp) is determined according to Biot's effective-stress law, app in the total tangential stress is attributed to the pore pressure. Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating those materials-handling tasks in underground mines that appear to generate a high number of injuries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration for the years 1989-1999 were studied to find out if there were any trends in materials-handling accidents and if so, to determine what tasks were involved and the sources of injuries. Several underground coal and metal mines were visited to document innovative materials-handling technologies. Considerations for safety training and mechanization needs for continued reduction in materials-handling injuries are described.

Introduction The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionized the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980s provided a magnetic product that was an order of magnitude stronger than that conventional ferrite magnets. This allowed for the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits that operated energy free and that surpassed electromagnets in the strength and effectiveness. New applications and design concepts that focused on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications that were not previously considered are now being used in primary mineral upgrading, recycling and secondary recovery. Historical perspective Lodestone was the first naturally occurring permanent magnetic material known. Lodstone was most likely used to upgrade iron ore by early civilizations. By the 1600s, the early magnet technology had advanced to quench-hardened iron-carbon alloys. The practical significance of magnetic separation was formally recognized in 1792 when an English patent was issued for separating iron ore by magnetic attraction. By today's standards, carbon steel is a very poor magnet material. It is easily demagnetized and has a very low energy product of much less than I MGOe (Million-Gauss-Oerstads). This was state-of-the-art technology for almost 300 years until chromium was added to magnet feedstock, which resulted in a three-fold increase in the energy product. The well documented addition of cobalt to permanent magnets in 1917 initiated the 30-year era of "Alnico" magnets that at the time provided a superior magnetic energy product. Since then, the science of magnetism has advanced rapidly and is now considered a highly developed branch of physics and material science. Permanent magnets have had an extremely long history. Figure 1 presents a chronology of permanent magnets that illustrates the increase in energy product. Amazing developments in material science have taken place in the last two decades. The gradual advancement of permanent magnet technology was shattered in 1967 with the initial development of samarium-cobalt (rare earth) magnets. Since that time, the advent of neodymium-boron-iron magnets provided such an increase in energy product that new design concepts were considered. New avenues of study were introduced by the complexities in the material science and physics involved in describing these new permanent magnets. Furthermore, applications for permanent magnets that were previously not considered were now viable. Rare earth elements Rare earth elements have claimed the attention of scientists for the past century. These elements were originally termed "rare" because they were thought to be quite scarce. Since then, however, geological studies have shown them to be relatively abundant. The discovery and identification of rare earth elements is complicated by the inherent difficulties in separating them from each other. The rare earth elements comprise the fifteen transition elements of Group IIIB, Period 6, of the periodic table. These elements extend from lanthanum to lutetium and are commonly called the lanthanide series. Samarium and neodymium are the two most common elements used in the commercial manufacture of rare earth permanent magnets. Commercial grade rare earth magnets There are only a few common types of rare earth magnets that are considered in the circuit design for magnetic separators. Early rare earth magnets of commercial significance (introduced in 1970) consisted of the first generation of sintered SmCo5. The energy product of these magnets ranged up to 23 MGOe, which provided the initial impetus to the field of high-energy permanent magnets. Although these magnets did not produce the extremely high magnetic field strengths of current rare earth magnets, they were relatively temperature stable. Containing 66% Co, they are the most expensive of the basic commercial rare earth permanent magnets. Their use is limited today because they are being replaced by second and third generation rare earth permanent magnets.

The Park City District, one of three major mining districts in Utah, is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains. The district has been in near continuous production since 1869. Production has been sustained from exceptionally long bedded replacement ore bodies in the Thaynes, Park City, and Humbug formations and also from several major veins. Minerals Appraisers/Valuers often find great difficulty or failure in attempting to employ the Sales Comparison Approach to the Market Value Appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income producing property. Common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by minerals appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the Income Approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers, and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much too common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value minerals appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables (see APPENDIX). The examples are used as the basis for discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while cautioning about the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.
