Video techniques for monitoring exposure, such as NIOSH’s “Helmet-CAM,” employ both real-time dust monitors and mobile video cameras to assess workers’ respirable dust exposures. Many real-time personally worn dust monitors utilize light scattering sensing elements, which are subject to measurement biases as a function of dust type (size, composition, shape factor) and environmental conditions such as relative humidity. These biased and inaccurate dust measurements impair the monitor’s ability to properly represent actual respirable dust concentrations. In the testing described, instrument mass concentration data was collected using three different types of commonly used commercial off-the-shelf personal dust monitors and compared to a reference standard. This testing was performed in a calm air (Marple) dust chamber in which three units of each make and model (for a total of nine monitors) were used for each test. Equivalency factors (EF, a multiplier to match the Thermo TEOM 1400a reference instrument) ranged between 0.746 and 1.879 across all dusts and environmental conditions tested, and between 0.821 and 1.519 on the ISO test dust.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. Extraction of minerals Reserves-Dimensions-Technologies 2. Usage of mineral resources-Manufacture’s products designed to be reused and recycled 3. It is felt that prior to the presentation of the technical portion of this paper, some general information would be of interest. The Sar Cheshmeh Copper Mining Company was founded by the Iranian Government to oversee the design and construction of Iran's first copper smelter complex, which will be another step in the industrialization of Iran. Since this is the first such plant in Iran, Sar Cheshmeh wisely chose to enlist the technical assistance needed in regard to the facilities requiring engineering and operating know-how from outside of Iran. To obtain the foregoing, SCCM signed a contract with Anaconda-Iran, Inc., which was formed by The Anaconda Company for this project. The general scope of this contract covers the overseeing of engineering and design by Parsons-Jurden as well as physical plant construction. In addition to this, the same services were given to water supply and tailings disposal systems which were not included as part of the Parsons-Jurden contract. Anaconda-Iran is also assisting SCCM in setting up a training program for Iranian personnel for plant operations, administration, etc., which .will go on for some time after the plant startup, under the guidance of Anaconda-Iran expatriates. SCCM?s other responsibilities, in respect to the development of this industrial effort, are the building of a townsite for approximately 2200 families, the expected manning requirements, having all the facilities necessary to provide a pleasant life in a remote area. It has been estimated that the manpower for operations will be 2050.

A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. The successful technical demonstration of coarse coal slurry transportation at Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine in West Virginia suggests that it is now appropriate to seriously consider this technology in other applications, especially the transport of ' coal in surface mining. Early examination indicates that coarse coal slurry transport may be highly competitive with existing haulage systems, depending on a number of factors. These factors are not yet completely defined, but certainly will include production rates, coal physical and chemical properties, terrain, soil conditions, climate, water availability and quality, availability of skilled labor and other economic considerations impacting the existing haulage systems.

Among the thirty-five declared critical raw materials (CRM) in the United States, there is no sustainable domestic production for the fourteen of them, while for some others domestic supply does not meet the national demand. Numerous potential critical raw material projects are in advanced exploration stages. However, the price uncertainties for many of these commodities put feasible future production into question and come into contrast with overly optimistic price forecasts published in all feasibility studies related to such exploration projects. Thus, in this work, a newly developed smart computational tool is used to evaluate the real perspectives of several CRM exploration projects implementing actual commodity prices, and to conduct reverse calculations in order to find the prices at which each project can be viable.

The Line Creek Mine is operated by Crows Nest Resources Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited. It is located approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (refer to figure 1). The Line Creek coal deposit is part of the Upper Elk Coalfield in the East Kootenays. The coal is a medium volatile, low sulfur, bituminous coal and is used as a coking coal. Coal close to the outcrop is typically of low F.S.I. and is processed for thermal use. The present pits have a total coal reserve of 30 million clean tonnes and is a multi-bench, open-pit operation. The coal is recovered by front shovel and backhoe combination, and hauled to the plant with a fleet of 120-tonne and 40-tonne capacity trucks. Line Creek is unique in that it can simultaneously treat both metallurgical and thermal coal in separate processing facilities (refer to figure 2). Run-of-mine coal is delivered to the truck dump. The plus 50 mm material is scalped off and reduced to minus 50 mm in two rotary breakers. The raw coal is then conveyed to one of five, 5000-tonne capacity, silos. Typically one silo is used for thermal coal and four for metallurgical coal (refer to figure 3).

The conversion of maf coal to pyridine solubles and gas was investigated in a microautoclave batch reactor for two Kentucky washed coal samples (Ky. #9 and Ky. #11). Solvent hydrogen donor strength was controlled by the tetralin content of a mixed 1-methyl naphthalene-tetralin solvent. Primary liquefaction conversions greater than 90% in 10 minutes of reaction time at 427°C were achieved in liquefaction solvents with moderate hydrogen-donor strength (circa 40% tetralin). A modified irreversible first order rate expression, containing a parameter (a) to account for the intrinsic reactives of the maf coal, described the experimental kinetic data rather well. The integrated form of this rate expression is -k1e x = a (a- ß)e (eq. 1) Parameter ß in equation (I) is the pyridine solubility of the starting maf feed coal, x is the primary liquefaction fractional number of conversion, k1 is the specific reaction velocity constant and ? is reaction time. Primary liquefaction rate was found to be quite temperature sensitive and independent of coal when a liquefaction solvent containing 40% or more tetralin was employed. Primary liquefaction rate appears to depend on liquefaction solvent hydrogen donor strength for solvents containing = 40 wt.% tetralin. The intrinsic reactives in the maf feed coal or a appear to depend mainly on the inertinite group maceral content of the coal for the two coals studied in liquefaction solvents containing 3 40wt.% tetralin. In contrast, a appears to decrease in liquefaction solvents of low donor strength., i.e; solvents with less than 40wt.% tetralin.

Dynamic coal failure events remain a safety concern in underground coal mining due to their sudden nature and high fatality rate. Previous research utilized Principal Component Analysis on field samples revealing strong empirical correlations between positive failure history and low sulfur content (S) and high volatile matter (VM). Further studies indicated that bumping coals tend to be less mature and less well-cleated than non-failure coals. However, these in situ studies faced the challenge of distinguishing intrinsic coal properties from external geological and stress-related influences. This study augments previous findings through laboratory experimental testing of coal samples that included unconfined compressive strength, chemical composition analysis, and qualitative observations on cleating, combined with compositional data analysis and machine learning techniques, to isolate and understand coal’s inherent bursting capacity. These results further confirmed the relationship between coal chemistry and failure classification.

The commercial life of a mineral product can be long, but like hitech electronic and software products that soar in sales one day to become obsolete and forgotten a few months or years, mineral products have a life cycle. They are invented, commercialized and eventually decline and disappear from commerce. Diatomite and perlite are produced from mined minerals, but almost none of the products in these industries spring from the earth in finished form. Straight calcined diatomite was invented over 100 years ago and flux calcined diatomite just a few years later. The expansion properties of perlite were discovered and first exploited about 75 years ago. Some applications for diatomite have disappeared or currently face competition from newer products. Dry cleaning was once the second-largest application for diatomite but disappeared over 30 years ago. Both the beer and wine filtration markets for diatomite face increased competition from membrane filters. A pipeline of new, proprietary products is critical to the future of the industry.

The traditional way of generating open-pit mine production schedules has several limitations. This work addresses the design and production-scheduling problem by considering minimum operational space requirements under a Direct Block Scheduling approach to generate extraction sequences that satisfy the operational space required. For this, traditional formulations were extended by including a new set of constraints that generate operating spaces for mining equipment to move and extract material. Then, a heuristic algorithm produces close to optimal practical pushbacks. This proposal was applied in a case study, and the results show its ability to generate practical production schedules without sacrificing expected return, obtaining differences in terms of Net Present Value (NPV) lower than 1% when compared to the traditional approach.

This study investigates the effect of reagent type, dosage, and pH on flotation kinetics and copper recovery for secondary sulfide ore with elevated clay content. The primary objective was to determine whether Xanthate performs comparably to or better than the currently used primary collector, Thiophosphate. Approximately 80 kg of ore was collected from three blast holes and systematically prepared through drying, crushing, grinding, and flotation testing. Grinding tests were conducted to establish optimal grinding time and lime consumption for pH control, achieving a target particle size distribution in 13 minutes and 30 seconds. Elemental and mineralogical analyses using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) identified a copper content of 0.36% and significant clay presence, affecting flotation performance. Fifteen flotation tests were performed under controlled conditions, with variations in reagent dosages. Control tests confirmed reproducibility, with recoveries around 80–82%. Increasing the pH did not improve kinetics or recovery, making higher pH adjustments economically unjustifiable. Adjusting the Thiophosphate dosage yielded the best recovery of 83%. Xanthate collectors, tested both as tertiary additives and as replacements for Thiophosphate, delivered comparable or superior recoveries—up to 91.5% in plant tests—and demonstrated faster flotation kinetics, even under high-clay conditions. These findings highlight Xanthate’s reduced sensitivity to clay, potential for lower dosage requirements, and operational benefits such as improved selectivity and circuit efficiency, validating its role as a cost-effective and alternative for processing complex sulfide ores.

The location and orientation of fire suppression nozzles is critical in suppressing mobile mine equipment fires. To effectively suppress such fires, optimization needs to be considered for the suppression nozzle locations and discharge angle. Detailed experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of fire suppression agents with different nozzle configurations. A variety of fire suppression systems including dry chemical, wet chemical, dual agent (dry and wet chemical), carbon dioxide, and water mist were used. Six types of nozzle locations were studied, and their fire suppression effectiveness were compared. Results from this work highlight potential considerations when determining effective fire suppression designs.

The Cripple Creek Mining district is located in Teller County, Colorado, 30 km west of Colorado Springs and 9 km southwest of Pikes Peak (Fig. 1). Since its discovery in 1891, the district has produced almost 21 million tr oz of gold (Gott et al., 1967), most of which has been from high-grade vein deposits. Globe Hill is located in the northern part of the district (Fig. 2). Production from its summit has yielded over 100,000 tr oz of gold. Early production was concentrated along high-grade veins and fault structures, but emphasis was soon placed on the extensive, low-grade (0.0X oz/t), breccia-hosted mineralization. From 1977 to 1981 Newport Minerals, Inc., a subsidiary of Gold Resources, Inc., mined 680,000 t of low-grade gold ore from the Globe Hill pit (Fig. 3) and production is expected to resume in 1986. These strongly-altered and -oxidized breccias are amenable to bulk-mining methods, and thus similar deposits are currently being sought elsewhere in the district. Numerous publications and reports discuss the breccia-hosted mineralization at Globe Hill. They include Cross and Penrose (1895); Argall (1905, 1908); Lindgren and Ransome (1906); Keener (1962); Peters (1982); Thompson, Trippel, and Dwelley (1985); and Trippel (1985). This preprint is a summary of the recently-completed research documented by Trippel (1985).

Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance. Consequently, over the last few years, there has been a major focus amongst some mining companies to imbibe Operational Excellence. This has been only possible because of the replacement of a silos based approach by an integrated view of the organization. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organization is not trivial. Attempts in the past to integrate functions such as through Mine-to-Mill initiatives in the mining industry have demonstrated significant benefits to many operations (McKee, 2013). Still, sustaining these benefits has clearly been a challenge due to manpower turn over and lack of proper systems and structures that integrate information between business functions within an operation and between operations and the corporate.Opportunities The advent of digital technology has opened-up opportunities to integrate inter-departmental information for a unified understanding of, and across, an entire organization. The Custom Coals advanced coal cleaning plant will be designed with a unique blending of existing and new processes to produce two types of compliance coals: Carefree Coal? and Self-Scrubbing Coal?. Carefree Coal will be produced by cleaning the coal in a proprietary dense media cyclone circuit utilizing fine magnetite to remove up to 90 percent of the pyritic sulfur and correspondingly greatly reduce the ash. While may utilities can achieve full S02 reduction compliance with Carefree Coal, others face higher sulfur reduction requirements due to the higher sulfur content of their existing fuel supplies. For these circumstances, a patented Self-Scrubbing Coal will be produced by taking Carefree Coal and pelletizing limestone-based additives with the finest fraction of the clean coal. These technologies will enable over 150 billion tons of non-compliance U.S. coal reserves to meet compliance requirements.

In this study, the effects of various extraction and stripping parameters, such as equilibrium pH (7.0, 8.5 and 10), extractant concentration (5, 10 and 20 volume %), organic-to-aqueous (O/A) ratio and stripping agent type and concentration were studied on chromium (VI) recovery from chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater using Aliquat 336. Results showed that these parameters all had significant effects on chromium (VI) recovery. A pregnant strip solution from a chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater with 33.4 g/L chromium content, suitable for sodium dichromate production, was generated by 20 vol. % Aliquat 336 in commercial kerosene. The O/A ratio was 1/4 and the equilibrium pH value was 0.87, the as-received pH value. The wastewater was treated with a two-stage countercurrent extraction process to produce a loaded organic phase, which was later stripped at the O/A ratio of two with a 4-M NaOH solution in a two-stage countercurrent stripping process using Taguchi?s optimization technique.

"The Kittilä underground mine in northern Finland is extracting one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe. Kittilä achieved commercial production on May 1, 2009, becoming Agnico Eagle’s first mine to open outside of Canada. The Kittilä orebodies were initially mined from two openpits – Suuri and Roura – and underground operations were added in October 2010. The pits were mined out in November 2012, so mining is now entirely underground in the Suuri and Roura deposits. Additional, small openpits will mine any remaining near-surface reserves in the future.The Kittilä Mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 km (560 miles) north of Helsinki and 150 km (93 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. With a mine life estimated through 2034, Kittilä is Agnico’s longest-life mine.The mine’s proven and probable reserves contain 32 Mt (4.7 million oz) at 4.6 g/t (0.13 oz/ st) gold. Ore has been mined from underground since 2010. The original 3 kt/d (3,300 stpd) operation underwent an expansion project to increase the throughput capacity of the mill by 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd), starting by the end of 2014.The region around the Kittilä Mine is underlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Kittilä Greenstone Belt oriented nearly vertical. This greenstone belt is similar to those hosting Agnico Eagle’s Canadian deposits in Quebec’s Abitibi region and Nunavut. At the contact point between ironrich and magnesium-rich rocks lies a 100- to 200- m (330- to 660-ft) thick structural zone known as the Suurikuusikko Trend. This trend hosts the Kittilä deposit, where multiple mineralized zones have been traced over a strike length of more than 25 km (15 miles).Most of Agnico Eagle’s work has focused on a 4.5-km (2-mile) segment of the Suurikuusikko Trend that hosts the five main zones of the known gold reserves and resources. From south to north they are: Ketola, Etela, Suuri, Roura and Rimpi.The ore at the Kittilä Mine is refractory, making gold extraction relatively difficult because the gold is generally locked inside the two main sulfide minerals – arsenopyrite and arsenic-rich pyrite. Only about 4 percent is very fine-grained “free gold” (not locked in sulfide grains) and easier to extract. Most of this free gold is found in the outer, oxidized or eroded sections of the ore."

"Clays are known to contribute to a wide range of mineral processing challenges. These challenges can haunt a plant from the pit, through the beneficiation plant and even to the tailings pond and process water. Each step that the clay is present potentially experiences significant and costly impacts to the process efficiencies. The effect of clay minerals on the performance of phosphate flotation was investigated. The investigation led to an understanding of the movement of clay through the beneficiation plant, the impact on reagent usage, and the overall flotation performance. INTRODUCTION With the decline in mineral feed grades, mineral processing will continue to face challenges. One significant challenge would be obtaining high recoveries of industry specified quality mineral concentrates with lower quality raw minerals. Other challenges may be the handling of the excess tails and process water being produced to maintain a mill’s production volumes. For example, increased levels of clay have been, and will continue to be, a topic of concern for many mines. Some of these concerns include environmental regulations associated with water storage and discharge, as well as beneficiation. Gonglun Chen reported that clays produced in the phosphate industry are generally colloidal and fine (90% < 45 µm) (Chen, 2006). As such, these clays can take 20-30 years to settle, in the absence of polymeric assistance. The settling of these clays is essential as an accidental discharge can lead to substantial impacts to the wildlife and ecosystem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has referenced cases where the discharge of water can result in fines in the tens of millions of dollars, and at times causing the processing plants shut down, depending on the volume and quality of this discharged water (EPA, 1997). The turbidity discharge criteria will vary from state to state. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection has listed a turbidity maximum of 29 NTUs, or 60 mg/L total suspended solids, above the natural background condition (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2016). A lot of the literature has been focused on the impact of high levels of clay (>10%) on mineral processing. Farrokhpay has reported the significant impact of clay minerals on froth stability in copper flotation (Farrokhpay, 2012). He reported that clays can form a hydrophobic slime coating on the surface of bubbles, which can yield an increase in froth stability. Clay concentrations as low as 5% can have significant impacts on the rheological properties or slurry viscosities. Increased slurry viscosities can lead to either elevated pumping/processing energies being required, decrease in flotation efficiencies due to a decrease in bubble mobility through the pulp, or decreased throughput to manage these viscosities (Tu, 2005; Farrokhpay, 2013; Burdukova, 2014)."
