Comminution is an integral part of the mineral extraction process. However, the influence of the comminution method (ball and rod mills) on silica and magnetite particle shapes has not been substantially investigated. Shape parameters for fractions of -250+212, -150+125, and -106+75 μm sizes were examined utilizing a scanning electron microscope and a Clemex vision PE image analysis system. The silica particles displayed higher elongation and flatness parameter values for rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of rod mill products are less than that of the ball mill products. Magnetite particle elongation and flatness parameter values of ball mill products in fraction sizes of -250+212 and -106+75 μm are larger than rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of ball mill products are smaller than rod-mill products, but for the -150+125 μm size range the result is converse. Furthermore, particle elongation and flatness increased with decreasing particle sizes of silica, whereas, roundness and relative width decreased for both Ball and Rod Mills. In case of magnetite, ball mill products displayed an increase of flatness and particle elongations with decreasing particle sizes but flatness increased and roundness and relative width decreased. Similarly for rod mills, magnetite fractions of -150+125 μm were found to have the largest values of elongation and flatness. INTRODUCTION Comminution alters the size and shape, causes lattice distortion, changes chemical composition, surface area, surface-free energy, and polymorphic transformation of all materials. The quantity and quality of such changes depend on specifications of the material feedstock, the type of mill being utilized, the specific energy input, ambient temperature, and environmental pressure [1]. The shape difference between the milled products depends on different grinding mechanisms and the respective breakage principles that these mechanisms depend on [2, 3]. With decreasing particle sizes, the nature of the particle surface become crucial [1]. The influence of the breakage technique has been found to be non-trivial and heavily dependent on the type of grinding mill used for particle size reduction [4]. Shape is an important industrial parameter for predicting particle behavior in downstream processes. The shape parameter affects the way particles burn, compact, are recovered, flow in fluids, sinter, float, agglomerate, fluidize, interact with pulmonary tissue, cut, abrade, react with chemicals, form structural materials, and retain and permit fluids to flow [5, 6]. The distribution of particle sizes and shapes are important for mining, civil and chemical, pharmaceutical, and various other industries with interest in the population modeling of atmospheric dusts, smoke, and grit [1, 3, 6]. The shape parameter not only affects the chemical, physical, surface properties of particles but is also important for downstream processes [5, 6]. Image analysis has been found to provide detailed information about size and shape of the particles and can be used for the control of product quality [4].

"INTRODUCTION Drill and blast (DnB) represents the most important, and sometimes the most costly processes in a mine.. The cost of drilling and blasting operations greatly contributes to the “high cost trends of the overall mining operations” (Afum B. O. and Temeng V. A. 2015). The use of available information to improve the DnB processes can be the difference between a highly expensive process and an optimized one. Mining operations have access to several types of data sets and key information from a wide variety of different systems. This information is normally used to improve, evaluate and apply processes for drilling and blasting. This may include different types of data from the different stages of the process (before, during, and after the drilling and blasting operations), such as hole locations (planned and actual), penetration rates, drill operators, fragmentation (expected and resulting), explosive (design and usage), geology, vibration, and others. This information can be used on its own or combined for further analysis to reduce costs, improve safety, and evaluate results. Fortunately, due to advances in mining software, drill and blast engineers can exploit this data and create reports to evaluate results and improve the DnB process. However, as users start combining information from multiple datasets and establishing standard operating procedures for reporting this data across multiple sites, it becomes valuable to create auditable, automated, and sustainable processes for handling the information. In many cases the task of aggregating and standardizing the data formats has already been completed and is available to consumers via the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). A data warehouse team extracts data from the source systems and transforms it so that it is meaningful for decision support (Barbara H. Wixom, Hugh J. Watson, 2007). Our initial implementation plan for the DnB solution included using data stored at the sites; however we learned early on in the process that much of the work for aggregating and supplying the required data was already completed. The goal for this case study is two-fold: to show how information can be used to make decisions and improve processes, highlighting the value of using an EDW for managing Drill&Blast information; and to discuss how technical challenges encountered during the implementations were resolved. This paper is targeted at users that want to better manage their DnB data or try to set up standardized workflows for using this information. This case study will discuss the process of implementing a DnB workflow at multiple sites within Freeport McMoRan Inc (FMI) using both data at the sites and information available using the EDW. The paper will begin with an overview of the project. The discussion will then describe how DnB processes were used to set up daily workflows in order to provide information for evaluating process and making decisions. The final section will discuss some of the technical challenges and how they were solved, as well as possible next steps for further improving the workflow."

Introduction The cost of grinding may be divided into a fixed equipment cost portion and an operating cost portion. The fixed equipment cost is the amount of money required to purchase the grinding mill itself. This amount may be kept separate from the installation cost which, often, is taken as a percentage of the fixed equipment cost. A good average is 43%; therefore a $100,000 ball mill would cost approxi¬mately $143,000 installed. Operating costs are variable and paid per unit time for power, liner replacement, grinding charge replenishment, labor, and mainte¬nance including major parts replacement. Such costs depend on the geographical location and will vary with the cost of labor. Operating costs are difficult to estimate. Most mining companies consider such information proprietary. This section provides a means to obtain an estimate of the equip¬ment cost of a grinding mill with a rated accuracy of±l0%. Compara¬ble methods to determine operating costs are not available. Such costs are presented in table form with suggestions for updating them. Esti¬mating the cost of liners and steel replacement is possible as described in a later section. Capital Costs of Grinding Mills Grinding mill costs have been related,124 by means of equations and corresponding graphs, to the nominal horsepower requirements of mills. All graphs are based on a Marshall and Stevens cost index for Mining and Milling of 300, where a cost index is a ratio used to estimate current prices of equipment from obsolete prices. Where (Cost Index Now) Cost Now = (Cost Then) (Cost Index Then) (I) For example, the cost of an autogenous mill that requires a 3000¬hp motor is estimated as $500,000 (Fig. 95). This was the estimated price when the M&S (Marshall and Stevens, Mining and Milling) cost index had a value of 300. If the index is currently at 400, then the estimated current price of the autogenous mill is: Cost Now = ($500,000) (400) (300) = $667,000 Most professional journals will publish current values of cost indices at least once a month. In subsequent pages, each graph of grinding mill cost vs. mill horsepower has an associated graph of capacity vs. horsepower along with a table that relates mill size to horsepower. The associated graph and the table must be used with caution, since both apply to an average ore under average conditions. Example calculations showing how graphs should be used are shown in the following. It should be stressed that the cost data incorporated herein ex¬cludes the cost of pumps, motors, lines, and classifiers, unless other¬wise stated. Costs are not direct quotes; they are the averages of quotes supplied by manufacturers and analyzed by means of regression analysis. Example 1. Salt domes, their cap rocks, and the adjacent sedimentary strata represent a major economic resource in the Gulf of Mexico basin. Gulf Coast salt diapirs formed in response to sediment loading of the "mother" Louann evaporite sequence of middle Jurassic age, an effect that is caused by the buoyant nature of the lower density salt. Halokinesis progresses from nonpenetrative deformation that creates broad "pillow" structures into discrete high-amplitude diapirs. Because of its buoyancy, the top of the salt diapir remains near the land surface or the seafloor during much of its history as the basin floor subsides. The salt within the Gulf Coast diapirs is deformed complexly and commonly shows subvertical banding that represents modified sedimentary layers with different contents of nonhalite components. The most abundant impurity is anhydrite, which occurs as individual millimeter-scale crystals or as deformed clasts that generally form about 5% of most salt stocks. Many mature salt diapirs are mantled by a "cap rock" that consists of a lower anhydrite zone and an upper calcite zone, commonly separated by a discontinuous gypsum-bearing zone. The anhydrite zone forms as accreted layers of anhydrite grains and clasts that are left after episodes of halite dissolution. The calcite zone is a product related to petroleum destruction accompanying bacterial reduction of aqueous sulfate. Calcite-cemented siliciclastic strata occur above or alongside diapirs. The mineral resources of the salt-dome setting are remarkably diverse. Major economic products of the salt-dome environment are salt and cap-rock-hosted native-sulfur deposits, as well as petroleum resources that occur on the dome flanks and in the cap rock. Native sulfur forms as a result of bacterial sulfate reduction accompanying petroleum destruction to form hydrogen sulfide, which is subsequently oxidized to elemental sulfur, major amounts of which have been produced by the Frasch process from Gulf Coast salt-dome cap rocks. Some cap rocks have produced limestone, gypsum, and anhydrite for a variety of construction uses. Although traditional industrial-mineral resource production from Gulf Coast salt domes is shrinking, some cap rocks host potentially commercial concentrations of celestite and barite, as well as the metals Zn, Pb, and Ag. Furthermore, caverns, excavated within the salt stocks, serve as major storage facilities for crude oil (including the Strategic Petroleum Reserve), liquefied petroleum gas, and natural gas. These resources are products of fundamental geologic processes that are integral to the evolution of the Gulf of Mexico basin. Whereas production of some industrial-mineral resources, such as elemental sulfur, has declined in recent years, ample reserves of salt will allow production to continue into the foreseeable future. Further, there is potential for other mineral-resource production from cap rocks under favorable economic circumstances. Expanded use of caverns, excavated in the salt masses for material storage and disposal, is likely to continue into the next century.

GENERAL STATEMENT Data frequently can be collected by several dif¬ferent methods. The method required for the nec¬essary precision for inflow prediction to mines should be selected and other methods avoided. Pre¬cision monitoring or measuring techniques fre¬quently require more time, expertise, and expense in their implementation that may not be justifiable. The temporal distribution of the data needs also may dictate the method used for data collection. Continuous recording devices may be required for time sensitive data whereas point measurements of other parameters may be adequate. Data needs will vary as the hydrologic investigation proceeds. In¬itial data needs may require only a qualitative col¬lection of data such as the areal distribution of precipitation. Subsequent data needs may require the measurement of ground water levels to the near¬est hundredth of a foot. Data requirements can be difficult to fulfill for ground water systems. This is particularly true for anisotropic, heterogeneous hydrostratigraphic units since the hydrogeologic parameters vary both ver¬tically and areally. Techniques exist for determining the storage characteristics of both unconfined and confined hydrostratigraphic units but these pro¬cedures require the installation of multiple wells in the same unit which may be impractical. Specific tests are discussed subsequently that permit the determination of vertical hydraulic conductivity. Data collected from field procedures or tests are generally preferred to laboratory derived data. This is especially true for hydrogeologic parameters such as hydraulic conductivity. SURFACE WATER SYSTEMS Precipitation Precipitation data can be collected from sources that maintain a historical record. The US Depart¬ment of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmos¬pheric Administration (NOAA), maintains weather observation stations across the country. Such a sta¬tion frequently can be found near a proposed mine site but the type of weather data collected varies from station to station. Fortunately, precipitation data are collected ubiquitously. The data collected by NOAA can be purchased for the area of interest in the form of monthly and annual tabulations. Private weather stations constitute a second source of precipitation data. Existing data usually are analyzed by one of three methods. The station average method merely sums the depth of precipitation at each station and divides the sum by the number of stations as fol¬lows: [ ] where Pavg is the average precipitation (L), P, is the depth of precipitation at station i (L), and N is the total number of stations. This method is applicable where there are a relatively large number of stations uniformly distributed across the area (Hjelnfelt and Cassidy, 1975, pp. 71-72). The second method, called the Thiessen poly¬gon method, weights the precipitation at each sta¬tion in direct proportion to the area it represents without consideration of topography. The stations are plotted on a map and perpendicular bisectors are drawn on the lines connecting the stations. The polygons formed by these bisectors constitute the area that the precipitation for that station repre¬sents. The overall precipitation can be calculated with the following equation:

The oxygen-rich bath smelting process of copper dross was simulated using Factsage software. It was found that the two-step simulation results agreed better with the industrial data, especially in the speiss. Bi, Pb, Sb, As, and Cu contents in the speiss by two-step simulation differed from the industrial data by 0.6 wt.%, 0.8 wt.%, 2.6 wt.%, 7.2 wt.%, and 8.6 wt.%, respectively. Twostep simulation results indicated that the speiss partitioning of Sb, As, and Cu increased from 60.1%, 32.3%, and 27.5%to 81.6%, 67.8%, and 47.2%, respectively, with the smelting temperature increasing from 1050 °C to 1250 °C. While the metal partitioning of Sb and Cu increased from 0% and 2.7% to 15.2% and 13.3%, respectively, with the separation temperature increasing from 400 °C to 700 °C.

A joint research program between the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Cyprus-Yampa Valley Coal Company is being conducted at the Foidel Creek Mine, Oak Creek, Colorado. This program goal is to study the effects of state-of-the-art, high-speed, automated longwall mining on health and safety, and primarily, ground stability under various geological conditions. The Bureau installed an automated data monitoring system, known as the Ground Control Management System (GCMS), to monitor in real-time the effect of rapid mining on pillar and face loading, stress redistribution in and around the longwall panel, and caving characteristics of the roof. The Bureau's GCMS, combined with the company's existing monitoring systems, which include environmental monitoring, a computer programmable conveyor belt system, and gamma ray roof control thickness indicators, has been effectively used to improve safety at the face, increase productivity, and reduce production costs.

The fossil resins of certain western coals are of significance and of sufficient value as a chemical commodity to justify a fossil resin industry. At the present time these valuable fossil resin resources, worth more than $0.50/lb as a chemical commodity, are being burned as fuel for electric power generation. This waste of our fossil resin resources corresponds to a loss in revenue of $200 million per year -equivalent to the value of the coal itself! Improved process technology for the recovery of fossil resin is under development and includes selective flotation of fossil resin from fine coal streams and solvent refining of the fossil resin flotation concentrate to produce a premium resin product. The most recent developments in process technologies are discussed with respect to separation efficiency and product quality. It is clear that the development of a fossil resin industry should not be limited by process technology.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHFM) in Leadville, CO will induct the class of 2011 on Sept. 10, 2011. Representing the coal, metallurgical/processing, research and development, marble and lead industries, this year?s inductees cover a diverse crosssection of the mining industry. William Francis Diamond, Wayne Hazen, Redfield Proctor and Jeffrey Zelms will join 210 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 24th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. The members of this year?s class were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Diamond had an illustrious engineering and managerial career that spanned four decades with Island Creek Coal Co. During that time, he was responsible for the engineering and construction of the deepest coal mines producing in North America at the time.

The use of controlled recirculation can be dated back to the early 1930s. Although this method has been applied in many mines since then, a generalized comprehensive network analysis is still lacking. This paper presents a unique approach in which the ventilation network with a controlled district recirculation is divided into two subsystems: a main subsystem and a recirculation subsystem. The subsystems are analyzed individually and the results and their relationships are then integrated into discussions of the total ventilation system. The analysis of the recirculation subsystem is facilitated by introducing a non-dimensional parameter A, which represents the ratio of the air quantity for the working face to that for the subsystem. As a result, fan and regulator pressures and air power for various recirculation arrangements can be effectively expressed as a function of A and the subsystem air quantity. Numerical examples are included.

A novel special magnetic separator was developed based on the special properties of precious metal-bearing alloy in highgrade nickel matte. The recovery of Au, Pt, and Pd was 77.79%, 84.79%, and 81.79% respectively at optimum operation conditions of magnetic separator feed of 2.5t/h, pulp density of 45%, and flush water of 1.5t/h, and the recovery significantly improved comparing with normal magnetic separator. Magnetic field simulation of the special magnetic separator indicates that magnetic intensity of 0.6 T can be generated on the surface of magnetic drum, which can strengthen the recovery of heavy alloy that contains precious metals. The alternate strong and weak magnetic field can also make magnetic particles rolling on the surface of drum, which will reduce the generation of magnetic agglomeration to a large extent and decrease the content of impurities in magnetic concentrate.

Most prediction methods used to calculate mining-induced subsidence rely on empirical formulations, which typically assume flat topography and uniform properties in the overburden. It is also well known that when a longwall panel mines below a valley bottom surface ground deformation magnitudes and orientations may be significantly influenced by the presence of the valley. This paper discusses ground deformation data collected at different surface locations above the Buchanan mine in the eastern United States. Measurements at individual surface points and strata movement measurements using a three-point extensometer have been collected as the area was undermined. Measurements correspond to the mining of the panel immediately under the measurement points and to the mining of adjacent panels. Measurement locations correspond to valley bottom locations. The measurements are critically evaluated and compared with respect to topography and panel face location. The issue of the fluctuation of GPS measurements is also discussed.

Recent experiences within certain sectors of the international mining industry suggest an underestimation of the environmental risk associated with the design of mine waste management facilities. These experiences show that the technical and managerial challenge of responsible mine waste management is not always fully appreciated. Unfortunately, the image of the mining industry's environmental performance is negatively impacted by a relatively few number of failures. This negative view overrides the many positive contributions made by the majority of mining companies. The fact that these failures continue to occur to this day in both developed and developing countries is indeed remarkable, and indicates a degree of risk-taking approaching unacceptable levels. The design requirements for tailing storage facilities are, in many cases, more demanding than those of conventional water dams, because seepage of fluids which contain dissolved metals may pose a greater threat than the mere loss of water.

Magma Copper Company, San Manuel Division, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Newmont Mining Corporation and located at San Manuel, Arizona. The ore body is a dessiminated porphry copper deposit in quartz monzonite. The primary copper mineral is chalcopyrite with minor amounts of chalcocite, bornite, and covellite. The molybdenite occurs mainly on fracture faces or else associated with quartz veinlets. Pyrite is the major sulphide mineral in gangue. The feed to the concentrator from the underground mine is approximately 0.720 percent copper and 0.029 percent molybdenite. The concentrator has a design capacity of 62,000 tons of ore daily. After a standard ore treatment circuit consisting of grinding, rougher flotation, regrinding, and cleaning, a bulk concentrate is produced which contains 27 to 29 percent copper and 1.0 to 1.2 percent molybdenite. This concentrate is pumped to the molybdenite plant feed thickener.

The subject of this paper is particle population balance models (PBM) that describe mineral impact crushing behavior; it is mainly concerned with the selection and fragmentation distribution function due to their importance in this context. The data obtained by Datta (1999) by applying impact pendulum testing to single limestone particles, used by Austin (2002, 2004a and 2004b) to obtain the principal parity of fragmentation functions, were processed in order to compare them with the results of other authors, such as Nikolov (2002 and 2004) and Vogel and Peukert (2003 and 2005) so as to increase knowledge of impact crushing. From this data it has been possible to obtain the performance models of the principal parameters of fragmentation function, thereby reducing the number of experiments necessary to model the impact crushing process. The authors also propose a simplification of the selection function model posited by Austin (2002).

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll on the U.S. coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicate that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied to reduce dust levels. An overview of CWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.
