"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. Heap and valley leach operations rely on solution collection piping placed within the heap to enhance both solution recovery and to assist overall solution management. The most common piping used in leaching operations is solid or perforated High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and Corrugated Polyethylene pipe (CPE). These pipes are widely used because of their low cost, ease of installation, durability, and flexibility. The typical recommended maximum design depth of burial for HDPE and CPE pipes is on the order of 30 meters (100 feet). However, ore heap heights at many facilities exceed 30 meters and some are now approaching 180 meters (600 feet) in height. At very high ore heap heights, the stability and performance of HDPE and CPE pipes becomes a critical issue for leaching facility design and operation. Failure of solution collection piping can lead to poor solution recovery, high hydraulic heads on the liner system, and in some cases, unstable ore slopes due to high solution pressures near slopes. This paper presents a review of methods that have traditionally been used to evaluate pipe stability under high normal loads. A common shortcoming of these methods is the inability to account for beneficial effects of ore arching around pipes and the time-dependent creep (stress relief) behavior of polyethylene (PE) materials. A new analytical approach is developed and presented which includes the effects of ore arching around pipes and creep of PE materials. The results of the new approach show that PE pipes will deform under high heap loads, but can remain stable and functional. Pipe stability is shown to be dependent on the type of pipe backfill and initial backfill compaction. The new approach represents a useful tool for designing applications for PE pipe under high normal loads.

The most common method of determining airflow employed by mine ventilation engineers is the product of i) the average air velocity as measured by a vane anemometer and stopwatch through a continuous traversing technique, with ii) the cross-sectional area of the roadway. This method requires the vane anemometer to accumulate the total flow over the duration of the traverse. Historically, this has been facilitated by a mechanical analog instrument that has either a counter or set of dials that display the flow. Common instruments of this type are Airflow Development's AM5000, Davis's, or Taylor's Biram type anemometer. The AM5000 is widely used in the Canadian mining industry but is no longer available. Therefore, regulatory authorities have seen fit to evaluate presently available commercial instruments to replace the AM5000. This paper describes an instrument evaluation contracted by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada which regulates the uranium industry. Over the last two decades there have been numerous advances in the development of electronic air velocity meters. Currently available units have the following features: a) battery operation; b) are compact and can be hand-held; c) employ LCD's, and microelectronic circuitry; and d) provide a time integration for the duration of a traverse. These features make such instruments a possible replacement to the analog units and stopwatch determinations. This paper details five of the new generation of vane anemometers plus a vortex air meter, and it explores their limitations in comparison to analog units. Specific consideration is given to linear response, the effects of yaw, traversing speeds and ergonomics relating to both handling and use. The paper concludes with some features that are attractive and should be considered when purchasing a new anemometer.

Annual requirements of uranium to fuel the 441 currently operating nuclear reactors in the world is 170 million pounds U3O8 (65,385 tonnes U). 2005 global production was 108 million pounds (41,595 t U), of which only 2.7 million pounds U3O8 (1,039 t U), was produced from US uranium deposits. US nuclear utilities represent 26% of the global nuclear capacity but only obtain 2.5% of their supply from US uranium mines. Since 2002 annual global production increased from 93 million pounds U3O8, a 15% increase and the US production increased from 2.3 million pounds to 2.7 million pounds, a 17% increase. Reasonably Assured Resources (RAR) of 12,332 million pounds U3O8 (4.7 million t U) are reported from a wide variety of countries and types of uranium deposits. This RAR suggests that there are significant global uranium resources potentially producible at a price of $50 per pound U3O8 ($130 per kg U). Table 1 shows the distribution of global uranium resources. This table, prepared from historic data maintained by the World Nuclear Association, does not include some areas of the world that are currently considered to contain significant resources of uranium such as Mongolia. Table 1 suggests that the United States contains the fourth largest uranium resource in the world with 890 million pounds U3O8, behind Australia, Kazakhstan and Canada in resources that are producible at a price of $50 per pound U3O8 ($130 per kg U). Within the US, the states that demonstrate the greatest amount of uranium resource are Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas and the Four Corners Area of Arizona, Colorado and Utah.

Gold milling activities generate waste streams containing dissolved metals and cyanide, among other contaminants, that require some form of treatment prior to discharging to the environment. To date, this treatment has involved the destruction of cyanide through natural degradation, chemical oxidation, or a combination of both followed by the precipitation of metal hydroxides. Although these processes have been proven to be capable of achieving. regulatory levels for metals and cyanide, they often generate significant levels of cyanate and, at times, ammonia, that may be toxic to rainbow trout and thus undesirable for regulatory compliance. Tallon Metal Technologies Inc. (Tallon) has developed Vitrokele™, a chelating resin that has the ability to capture metals (including gold), both total and weak acid dissociable cyanide, as well as thiocyanate from both slurries and solutions. The loaded resin is eluted and returned to the recovery circuit while metals and cyanide are recovered from the eluent stream. This process was demonstrated at pilot scale at B.P. Resources' Hope Brook Gold Mine in Newfoundland, and more recently at Canamax's Bell Creek Mine near Timmins, Ontario. The results from these pilot programs showed metal and cyanide recoveries of 99% or more with the concentration of cyanide and metals in the effluent reduced to levels with minimal or no toxicity to rainbow trout. Furthermore, neither cyanate nor ammonia were generated from the process. The loaded resin was effectively stripped and re-introduced to the recovery circuit; cyanide was captured in the eluent stream and made available for recycling to the mill leaching circuit; and metals were captured for re-use, sale or disposal. This paper summarizes the results obtained from the pilot tests at the Bell Creek and Hope Brook Gold mine sites.

The physical properties of an ore body require determination for virtually all mining projects, new and existing. The extent and regularity of such determinations being subject to the size and homogeneity of the orebody. Such properties have an impact at the design stage of new plants, with respect to equipment specification, and thus effects capital costs; and also impacts on the operating costs of new and existing plants, with respect to power consumption, production levels and part replacements. All of these can severely alter the bottom line and can be the determining factor in the economic viability of many projects. This paper examines some of the most common properties that are measured, the procedures utilised in determining these properties, and their variability under conditions of reproducibil­ity, and to a lesser extent repeatability. The properties looked at were Impact Crushing Work Index, Abrasion Index, Bond Rod Mill Work Index and Bond Ball Mill Work Index. A number of testing laboratories throughout Australia and the US were utilised in the survey. The results showed up some interesting and important features of the procedures used, all of which have become accepted industry standards, and which had varying effects on the final result. Tests such as the rod and ball mill indices would appear to have reasonably robust procedures which allowed for the determinations of the respective index without the introduction of significant variations, although there were indications that variations could occur. The other tests gave a sufficiently different picture to be able to suggest that an argument could be made for a more intensive investigation to be undertaken, with the possible outcome that a modified test procedure or an alternative test is required.

Test work and plant operation confirmed that semiautogenous (SAG) milling is a viable option for Inco's milling rationalization project at Sudbury only if pebble crushing is included. Throughput increases more than 50% with pebble crushing incorporated into the comminution process. The finer product of high-speed pebble crushing provides further energy savings. The unconventional approach of pumping the pebble crusher product, while simplifying plant layout, has produced challenging wear problems. Inco Ltd.'s Sudbury operations are located in northeastern Ontario, Canada, about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto. Inco has 11 operating mines around the rim of the Sudbury basin. The mines currently produce about 11 Mt/a (12 million stpy) of ore. This ore contains pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in mafic host rocks. The milling facilities are designed to produce 108.8 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of nickel as concentrate. This concentrate is further processed through Inco's smelting and refining facilities to produce nickel, copper and several other metals. Before 1991, -200 mm (-8 in.) ore was shipped to two primary mills. The Clarabelle mill had a design capacity of 29 kt/d (32,000 stpd). Frood-Stobie had a capacity of 16.3 kt/d (18,000 stpd). The flowsheets of these mills were similar. Two stages of open-circuit crushing were followed by rod milling and closed-circuit ball milling. The product from the comminution circuit, at 12% +250 mm (+65 mesh), was first passed through magnetic separators to recover magnetic pyrrhotite. It was then sent through a four-stage flotation process. The first two stages produced a high-grade copper-nickel concentrate. The final two scavenger stages produced a low-grade copper-nickel concentrate containing nonmagnetic pyrrhotite.

Man is a short time resident of the planet Earth. He does not have the memory to fully comprehend just what is going on. His span of knowledge can be related to the life of the world to see that this is the case. A museum at Grand Canyon features a geologic clock that compresses Earth's age of 4.5 billion years into 24 hours. Man's estimation of the earth's age has changed radically in the past half century. In 1930, one prominent geologist asserted that the age of the Earth was ". . . at least 600 million years." Later, physicists used radioactive clocks to conclude that the Earth's age was 1.6 billion years. More recently, geologists have found rocks in northwestern Australia estimated to have formed 4.5 billion years ago. As we learn more about what is underfoot, the estimate of Earth's age might change again. The Grand Canyon's 24 hour clock shows that the dinosaurs were the dominant life form for 165 million years. Then an event occurred that wiped them out about 65 million years ago. The prevailing theory is that an asteroid struck the Earth and generated enough dust to wipe out the vegetation upon which most dinosaurs fed. During Earth's existence, there have been at least 12 such mass extinctions - the worldwide disappearance of diverse animal groups. On a planet that has been around for 4.5 billion years and that may continue to exist for another 4.5 billion, it seems reasonable to expect that further mass extinction's will occur. According the Grand Canyon's 24hour clock, the 165 million year reign of the dinosaurs amounted to about five minutes. On that 24 hour clock, the world has been dinosaur free for almost two minutes.

Study area is located on the NorthWestern of Yatagan-Yenikoy and placed in the units of the crystaline Menderes massif of Eagen, Turkey. Stratigraphically gneissic, migmatitic and metagranitic rocks are found at the base. Garnet schists, phyllitic rocks lie unconfirmitelly upon the basement rocks. Permian aged marbles can be observed as diferrent sized lenses within the schists. Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous aged gray colored dolomites and pure crystaline calcite bearing marbles lie upon the Permian aged schists. Neogen series, mainly composed of conglomerates, claystones, marl and limestones unconformly cover the other basement series, mentioned above. Pure calcite bearing marble occurances are found at 2 locations in the study area. These are known as Berber Quarry and Kavuk Quarry. Samples numbered as N7, N8, NA from the Berber Quarry, mineralogically composed of Calcite (97-99%)+iron oxide (1-3%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (97,98%), Fe2O3 (0.5-1%), SiO2 (0.025%) N9 and N10, sampled from the Kavuk Quarry-mineralogically composed of Calcite (94,95%)+iron oxide (2-3%)+albite-Quartz (1-2%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (92-93%), SiO2 1.49%, Fe2O3 0.42%. Especially in plastic and paint sector albite and quartz are unwilling minerals due to their hardness. Approximatelly 1/20 of the study area (87.500 km2) contains industrial calcite occurances. Moreover about 100 billion Tons geological, 1.86 billion tons runable (possible) calcite reserve calculated. It can be expected the calcite quality will be increased with depth. During the running stage of the quarries over burden removel and hand sorting processes will positive affect of the quality.

The paper under discussion provides an excellent and concise study of compartment ergonomics for thin seam equipment. However, in accomplishing this, some very important operational aspects were ignored. Since these are likely to be determinant, the authors' response is solicited. The novel shuttle car with its cross-car, end-mounted compartment is operationally very different from the current one. The latter can be considered a highly mobile extension of the continuous miner or loader, with a pass-through conveyor, dump boom, and extra storage. As such, the vehicle's kinematics are the simple "I," or shuttle pattern, bent for going around pillars, with an intermediate stop at the "change-out point" (Adler, 1986 ). The action of the cable reel adjusts well to this pattern. The proposed shuttle car's motion either superimposes a "Y," time is lost (5 seconds) for each cycle, space is needed, line of sight is compromised, and a cable anchor is probably required at the dump. A chute is almost prohibitive in construction time and cost. The lack of a dump boom further curtails flexibility in the proposal. The value of a standard hand and opposite standard hand configuration also needs consideration. Many front-end loaders have a rocker (overshot) capability that is designed to achieve an "I” pattern. And crawler loaders sometimes use a side dumping bucket variant for the same purpose. These examples indicate the pattern's importance. For underground, thin seam application, the ram car has become popular. This is an articulated truck, battery-powered, and with an ejector dump. Its operational patterns would be similar to the novel shuttle car, except without the loading flexibility provided by a conveyor. Since the cab location of the proposed shuttle car largely obviates some of the major advantages of the present shuttle car, the question arises whether this configuration could be adapted to the current ram car and scoop

INTRODUCTION This contract is the most northerly portion of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. (TARP) The project begins at Addison Street in Chicago and proceeds northerly approximately ten miles to end at Wilmette Harbor and Lake Michigan. The project which consists of 2 work shafts, 32 drop shafts, 7.322 km (24,020 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel, 8.458 km (27,750 ft.) of 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel and miscellaneous rock bolting and grouting, was bid for a total cost of $63,140,480. The tunnel invert elevation varies from 65.5 m (215 ft.) to 77.4 m (254 ft.) below the ground surface, which places the tunnel in a rock formation of dolomite limestone. At the tunnel invert, the unconfined compressive strength of the limestone varies from 96 MPa (14,000 psi) to 152 MPa (22,000 psi). The 6.7 (22 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 10.9 cu m. (14.2 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel while the 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 20.1 cu m (26.3 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel. The total cubic meters of rock required to be excavated from both tunnels was 818,821 cu m (1,070,978 cu yd.). All of this will be mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM). These tunnels were not to be lined with concrete. The thirty two drop shafts have upper portions that are cylindrical in the overburden and rock sections. 3D-CANVENT is a software package that integrates advanced computer aided design (ACRD) true 3D graphics with a mine ventilation simulator. The package runs as a Windows(tm) application to access its printer drivers environment and does not need third party CAD software. It is composed of two primary modules: DMVENT and MINEDESIGNER. DMVENT is a traditional Fortran coded Hardy-Cross iterative ventilation network solver written in 1980 with thermodynamic capabilities. This module is relatively unchanged with the traditional data input options for branch type, specified or calculated resistances, fixed flows, and fixed or variable pressure fans. MINEDESIGNER is the graphics engine that optimizes the ventilation design process. It performs the front-end transformation of input data entered in the graphical interface into the correct format for the solver. At the back-end it reconverts the historically standard tabular data output from the solver into an easily viewed graphical format. ACRD features of MINEDESIGNER are used to generate a 3D wire-frame node and branch network of the mine's ventilation system. The network can be displayed in up to 4 views orientated to XYZ planes or a 3D view. All the views have zoom, pan, slice and rotate options. The graphical interface efficiently permits data entry and editing via a mouse with pick-and-point item selection. Branches can be found or added with "search" and "join" options. Visual interpretation is enhanced by the 16 colour options for branches and numerous graphical attributes. Network locations are readily identified by alpha-numeric names for branches, junctions and fans, and also the logical numbering of junctions. The program is also readily expandable for pollutant simulation and control/monitoring applications.

Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. Construction of the MBTA Red Line Extension through Somerville, MA, called for driving twin tube tunnels through a zone of approximately 83m (273 ft) with mixed face conditions. While the majority of the tunnels were driven through competent hard rock using drill and blast techniques, the mixed face zone was advanced using floating crown bars for primary support. The overburden consisted of medium clay, underlain by water bearing glacial till, over a sloping bedrock surface. Due to the unusual nature of the construction techniques, a program was undertaken by the Contractor to monitor ground movement and stresses in the temporary steel supports. This paper presents a description of the instrumentation employed, as well as the measured ground movements and support stresses. Additionally, the tunneling techniques are briefly presented and commented upon. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Davis Square to Porter Square Tunnel Contract is part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authorities (MBTA) Red Line Extension from Harvard Square in Cambridge to the Alewife Brook Parkway via Somerville. The 5.1km (17,000 ft) Red Line Extension consists of four major new stations, three of which will be interlinked via tunnel construction, and the remaining station will be the last link of an open cut portion, and a terminal point for this phase of the extension. This 866m (2,790 ft) portion began at Porter Square in Cambridge and rose at a 4% slope through Somerville, terminating at the new Davis Square Station. Twin tube tunnels were constructed through 763m (2,517 ft) of rock and 83m (273 ft) of mixed face conditions at the Davis Square end. Figure 1 presents a plan view of the entire contract.

"From 1998-2002 the world's leading mining and metals companies developed the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) to understand their industry's role in the transition to sustainable development and to ensure its long-term contribution to sustainable development (SD). Since then, the industry has come a long way: For example, operational safety and health have improved significantly, environmental management systems and impact assessments have become the norm, community relations have been established, many mining companies report annually on their contributions to SD and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has taken on the recommendations of the GMI as an industry association. However, since the GMI the concept of sustainable development has been evolving from a rather generic and loose definition (“weak sustainability”), to an absolute and strict definition of sustainability, based on the boundaries of our planet (“strong sustainability”). Similarly, other concepts such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) have evolved and even deviated from their initial intentions. This paper presents results from a literature review looking at how far this transition has moved from a scientific debate towards becoming mainstream. Furthermore, it explores, by using qualitative comparison analysis, if the current efforts of the large mining companies are still sufficient or if the industry is again at risk of falling behind societal expectations and hence should once again come together - for a GMI 2.0 - in order to update its approach. We conclude that the mining industry, whilst in a “weak sustainability” position and behind the peer group on climate change and natural capital considerations, is aligned with current societal expectations, expressed through the Sustainable Development Goals, and therefore there is no need for a GMI 2.0 at present."

This report was written because of concerns of the possible error involved when stopping leakage is incorrectly assumed to be turbulent. It is common practice to use turbulent flow to characterize each airway branch for computer models of mine ventilation circuits. This report addresses computer methods to accurately model air-leakage paths. A graphical method is described for deriving the equations of leakage through stoppings. The significance of modeling leakage according to the proper flow regime (turbulent or laminar) is demonstrated by the following method. A hypothetical mine was developed to represent present-day conditions. The stoppings of the mine were chosen to leak according to laminar flow properties. The mine was represented by constructing two base models. One base model used turbulent leakage equations for each stopping, while allowing the corresponding resistances to vary. The other base model used the correct laminar leakage equations and held corresponding resistances constant. The mine circuit was then expanded to demonstrate future development. The expanded portion was designed with stoppings that were identical to those in the base mine. The mine in the future state was represented by two projection models. Each projection model was an extended version of its associated base model; one used turbulent leakage equations and one used laminar leakage equations for stoppings. The laminar projection was theoretically correct and is used as a basis for comparison of differences in airflow quantities. Rather than modeling every leakage path for stoppings, a more practical approach is also discussed. A good level of accuracy is maintained by combining leakage paths if the proper flow equations are used. This method was used on the hypothetical mine projection and the flows were very similar to the theoretical values.

The geostatistical estimation of the reserves of an ore deposit is highly dependent on the quality and stability of the variograms of the sample grades. Gold deposits commonly show a skewed grade distribution. The few high grades at the tail end of the distribution produce unstable variograms that are difficult to model. If these grades are cut to a lower grade value or removed, more stable variograms are obtained. However, outlier grades may make a deposit economically viable, and their cutting or removal should be treated with caution. To reduce (but not to eliminate) the effect of high grades, a transformation of the raw data can be performed. Most commonly used transformations are: logarithm, gaussian anamorphosis, rank and indicator. Variograms of the transformed grades are resistant to high grades and present a clear structure. The weak point of data transformation appears when grades are estimated by kriging; the estimates are very sensitive to slight variations in the parameters of the back-transformation. More robust variogram estimation procedures can also be used, but often these procedures are not suitable for skewed grade distributions as they are based on an assumption of a contaminated normal distribution. The Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea has a highly skewed grade distribution, with grades ranging from 0.01 to 3500 g/t and a coefficient of variation greater than 5. For the geostatistical estimation of the high grade zone of the deposit, the influence of the high grades was quantified by calculating and comparing the following variograms: raw grades, raw grades with the highest grades removed and transformed grades. The study confirmed that there is no general method for handling high grades in a geostatistical reserve study. Several methods should be tried to quantify the influence of high grades.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines, through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., has identified guidelines for the selection of the most effective water spray system and water flow rates for use on continuous mining machines. Specifically, these parameters were modified to obtain maximum dust control with regard to quartz dust exposure and more stringent respirable dust standards due to quartz. A novel water spray system, consisting of flat fan spray nozzles, mounted across the top of the mining machine, along with high flow, flat fan and higher pressure hollow cone nozzles mounted under the boom has been identified and tested. The anti-rollback/underboom spray system minimizes dust rollback while increasing dust knockdown by its unique positioning of spray manifolds and orientation of spray nozzles. Respirable dust suppression characteristics of the system acted in three ways: - by wetting the surface of the broken coal material to prevent dust from becoming airborne; - by controlling the airflow pattern at and near the face to minimize dust rollback to the operator Is control location; and - by dust knockdown, i.e., airborne capture, or scrubbing of airborne dust from the air. During underground trials, the anti-rollback/ underboom spray system reduced dust levels at the operator's position and in the immediate return by 55 and 15 pct, respectively, when compared to a conventional spray system. Quartz dust levels at the operator '8 position were essentially eliminated, while quartz dust levels in the immediate return were reduced by 57 pct. Applying the concepts of this technique throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable quartz dust, as well as allow coal mine operators to comply with the associated, more stringent, respirable dust standards.

The following paper is an evaluation of the instrumentation programs on recent Corps of Engineers tunneling projects. The authors have first-hand knowledge of the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex (NCMC) Expansion Project. Information on the other projects comes from conversations with those directly involved in the instrumentation programs and from referenced reports. The specific objectives of this paper are: (1) to state the purposes of the instrumentation programs, (2) to discuss the benefits gained from the instrumentation, and (3) to present conclusions from this study that will provide guidance to those planning instrumentation on future projects. Presentation of detailed descriptions of the projects and instrumentation data is limited to that necessary to the accomplishment of the above objectives. NCMC EXPANSION PROJECT The NCMC is located at a depth of approximately 800 feet in Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colorado. For the current expansion project new chambers were mined to accommodate a new diesel power plant and associated cooling and air handling equipment. During 1971 some 55,000 yd3 of granite were mined through existing access tunnels for this expansion. A model of the new excavation is shown in Figure 1. The light shaded areas are new openings, and the dark areas are portions of the existing operating complex. The large chamber to the right is the power plant chamber and has a span of 67 ft, a height of 50 ft, and a length of 172 ft. The other large chamber on the lower level is the cooling tower chamber and has a span of 38 ft, a height of 45 ft and a length of 185 ft. The small chamber on the upper level has a span of 20 ft and is 27 ft high and 140 ft long. Other major excavations are the 18 ft diam air tunnel
