The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

Introduction This is an exciting day. It isn't often that you can find the best minds in a particular business gathered together in one place. But that is what we have here. You are the best and the brightest people there are in the business of gold mining. What we discuss at this conference confirms the major issues facing us and sets out the issues governing how our mines and mining companies will be run in the next few years. In looking over the list of papers to be given, I have noticed something. It is something that I have noticed at almost every mining convention I have ever attended. Almost every paper at this conference concerns itself with the technical side of mining. Most of us in this roan are professionals; we are either engineers, geologists, accountants or representatives of some other profession. In getting where we are today, we have had to work hard to acquire the technical skills needed for our individual professions. We are all proud of our knowledge and work hard to claim the right to be considered an expert in a particular technical field or subject area.

Knowledge based applications are becoming important to Associated Manganese for efficiently dispatching ore of appropriate grades to customers on time. The G2 expert system shell has been used to develop blending and scheduling applications using a combination of object-oriented rule based, procedural, and heuristic approaches. The blending application, for example uses a heuristic approach for creating blends from thousands of small stacks of manganese ore of various grades and sizes, to meet customer specifications while fully exploiting the available inventory. Data capture and data warehousing have become important issues, and the Internet shows strong potential for distribution of pre-processed information.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the responses of a prototype smoke detector and a commercially available photoelectric smoke detector to smoke particles generated from various combustion sources. The prototype smoke detector combines optical scattering measurements with ionization chamber measurements in order to reduce/eliminate nuisance alarms due to the presence of airborne dusts or diesel exhaust particles. The commercially available smoke detector is designed for use in harsh environments where airborne dust represents a major problem due both to nuisance alarms and detector contamination. In the experiments, the responses of the two detectors were measured when exposed to smoke particles from the exhaust of a diesel engine and from a variety of fire sources, including wood, coal, styrene butadiene rubber, and No. 2 diesel fuel. For the solid fuels, data were obtained for both smoldering and flaming combustion. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results as they apply to early-warning fire sensors capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by either airborne dust or the products produced from diesel engines. Subsequent to these laboratory experiments, six smoke detectors were installed in an underground limestone mine for further testing and evaluation. Overland conveyor belts that exhibit tracking problems under loaded and unloaded conditions can be tested to' determine the root cause of the mistracking. Moveable conveyors are more prone to mistracking due to structure alignment requirements. In addition, belting quality, splice straightness and carcass condition has a dramatic effect on the performance of a belt in relation to tracking. Methods are discussed that are proven to reduce belt mistracking and improve the operational reliability of the conveyor system.

This paper chronicles the mining of a main interceptor sewer through a residential neighborhood for the MWRA's Boston Harbor clean-up. The Wellesley Extension Sewer Tunnel consisted of 490 m (1600 ft) of rock tunnel, 107 m (35V ft) of mixed face and 336 m (1100 ft) of softground. The tunnel was located 4.6 m (15 ft) below water table and passed directly beneath six buildings with as little as 7 m (23 ft) of cover. In addition, the tunnel ran parallel to and within 4.6 m (15 ft) of an existing sewer tunnel with flows up to 187,5 million liters (50 million gal.) per day. The rock encountered by the tunnel was comprised of gramodiorite, amphibilite and diabase. The soils which passed through the tunnel face consisted of tills, sands and non-cohesive plastic silts. The techniques developed and the equipment utilized to successfully mine this complicated ground are described.

Naumannite (Ag,Se), a silver selenide mineral, was first discovered in 1828. This study investigates the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and leaching kinetics of naumannite. Mechanical activation in a planetary ball mill increased its specific surface area, enhancing the leaching rate of silver in nitric acid (HNO3). The study found that mechanical activation significantly improves silver recovery.

Capital investments are made for a variety of purposes, from providing incremental capacity at existing operations to developing and implementing new technologies intended to radically improve a company's capabilities. These projects generate very different business opportunities and create value in distinctive ways. For incremental improvements, the capital budgeting process assures at least a loose fit between short-term goals and readily available resources. However, the criteria used to evaluate capital projects often prevent a company from committing to more aggressive goals that lie beyond the firm's current abilities or resources. Such projects may not have clearly identifiable future cash flows, and the degree of interaction with other projects and the nature of the risk incurred may be difficult to estimate. Additionally, by focusing only on quantifiable benefits, the budgeting process often fails to recognize "soft" improvements such as increased operating flexibility or new knowledge generated by such projects. By rejecting these projects, the capital budgeting process may actually harm the company's future competitive position.

This work focuses on the operational and safety issues associated with karst voids in large opening underground mines. Issues include water inrush, structural instability, and engineering uncertainty in these environments. Coupled with the fracturing prevalent in folded sedimentary rocks, karst voids are complex and challenging ground-control risks. Traditional methods of predicting karst void locations, such as probe drilling, are impeded by the inconsistent spatial distribution and variable sizes of the features as reported by Li et al. (J Rock Mechan Geotech Eng:232–242, 2010) and Hassan et al. (Procedia Chem 19:737–742, 2016). Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical technique that transmits radio waves into a medium and subsequently detects reflected waves via a receiver. The travel time and energy of received signals are then processed and interpreted. The difference in conductivity and dielectric permittivity between limestone and open karst cavities causes strong reflections. GPR is frequently used as a geophysical surveying technique in several industries; however, there is a lack of published research on underground mining GPR applications as reported by Zhao et al. (2015a; Geophys J Int:62–71, 2015b) and Eskelinen and Pellinen (Constr Build Mater:888–898, 2018). The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the use of GPR in an underground stone mine and to discuss the importance of karst void detection ahead of mining.

INTRODUCTION The Nuclear Energy Agency plays an active role in promoting international cooperation among its member countries in the field of nuclear energy. In addition to various other functions, it plays a major role in encouraging harmonisation of government regulatory policies and practices, promoting exchange of information, and coordination of research and development in the field of radiological health and safety associated with nuclear fuel cycle activities. The work of the Agency is carried out through a number of specialised standing committees. In particular, the Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) is responsible for the Agency's activities concerned with radiological protection and related environmental problems. Its functions include review and discussion of national radiation protection policies and practices, review of developments in radiological protection, interpretation of ICRP recommendations and the study of the means of their translation into practical applications, including the establishment of radiological protection standards. Its functions also include the preparation of technical studies and reviews on specific problems requiring attention, and coordination of further research and development at the international level. Major attention is presently being given to the NEA programme of work on problems associated with radiation protection and environmental impact of nuclear fuel cycle activities, with particular attention to the front-end (uranium mining and milling) and the back-end (waste management) of the fuel cycle. In this context, the increasing attention that has been given in several countries to the problems associated with the exposure of man to radon, thoron and their daughters, and with their dosimetry and measurement, were readily appreciated by NEA, which began an active programme of work in this field in 1976. Because of the detrimental health effects,as demonstrated by epidemiological studies,caused by prolonged exposure to excessive levels of shortlived daughters of radon, particularly in poorly ventilated underground mines, the bulk of attention and needed effort has been focussed on radon and radon daughters in uranium mining. In certain countries some concern has been expressed also about the significant levels of exposure experienced by workers in non-uranium mines,and members of the public who live in particular areas or in dwellings built with particular materials which produce higher than average levels of radon and radon daughters. However, at the time of the first NEA involvement in this field it was considered that one of the most urgent problems to be solved was that of ensuring adequate personal dosimetry for uranium miners. Consequently, the NEA was urged to organise a specialist meeting on personal dosimetry and area monitoring for radon and radon daughters to provide an international forum for exchanging information and reviewing problems in this field. The meeting was held in Elliot Lake, Canada, in October 1976. A second specialist meeting, on the same subject, was held in Paris, in November 1978, to review further developments in this area. These meetings demonstrated that the overall problem associated with exposure to radon and radon daughters had many facets, each of which in recent years has been the subject of considerable attention in many countries for different reasons. It emerged from the meetings that further work was required on a variety of issues in two main areas: 1) dosimetry 2) metrology and monitoring. Conclusions and recommendations which emerged from the two NEA specialist meetings were discussed by the CRPPH. As a consequence the Committee approved, in September 1979, a detailed programme of work in the area of dosimetry and monitoring of radon, thoron and their daughters, and approved the setting up of an international Group of Experts on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring to undertake the work. The work has been divided into two phases - phase I, on dosimetric aspects, and phase II, on metrology and monitoring aspects. The terms of reference of the work are given in Appendix 1. A list of national representatives on the Group of Experts on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring is given in Appendix 2; many of these persons are participating here in the Conference. The Group of Experts met for the first time in April 1980 and met again in September 1981. The work of phase I is nearing completion and a report is expected to be submitted soon to the CRPPH for its consideration. Three technical papers providing interim information on the study appear elsewhere in the proceedings of this Conference. The papers cover the three principle areas examined in the study so far: 1) dosimetric aspects 2) review of the "working level" 3) review of objectives and requirements for measurement and monitoring of radon, thoron and daughters. The authors, their affiliations, and the titles of these papers are listed in Appendix 3. A brief overview follows giving the principal results.

Approximately 200 samples of iron ores and other iron- bearing materials have been tested for amenability to treatment by the R-N process in bench scale laboratory work. Twelve large lots, ranging in size from 900 net tons to 18,500 net tons, but generally 3,000 to 4,000 tons each, have been processed in the R-N demonstration plant. The ores tested in the demonstration plant ranged from 27 to 70 percent iron content and gave excellent results. (1) The demonstration plant has a nominal daily capacity of 50 tons of high quality iron briquettes and has now operated for over five years. A continuing program of process improvement is carried on between demonstration on potential licenses ores. An important development is the complete elimination of any secondary products which, in the past (2,3,4,5), resulted from treatment of certain low-grade ores.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted preliminary investigations on the leaching of phosphate ores obtained from deposits in the western United States using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the presence of methanol. Phosphate extractions in excess of 80 pct were obtained on an ore sample from Pocatello, ID. Initial leaching studies using the ore as received yielded extraction levels of approximately 35 pct. However, when the sample was ground for as little as 5 min in a rod mill, in methanol, then treated with HzS04, 82 pct extraction was achieved. The R2O3-P2O5 (R2O3 = Al2O3 + Fe2O3) ratio of the starting material was 0.11. Solubilized products after leaching exhibited an R2O3-P2O5 ratio of 0.02, which is well within desired limits. These results illustrate the potential of acid-alcohol leaching for recovering phosphate values from marginal-grade ores and as an alternative to methods involving current beneficiation techniques that yield lower phosphate recoveries.

Formulation and commercial utilization of solid-waste incinerator slag by-product is the focus of this paper. Particular attention is given to iron aluminosilicate melts having compositions similar to that of nature's basalt The earth?s crust can be viewed as an environmental laboratory for predicting stability of various silicates; small-scale laboratory experiments are necessary to confirm findings there from. An ideal slag consumes flux additives at acceptable cost, is compatible with furnace refractory, flows readily from the furnace, and has physical properties suitable for its commercial utilization -all within the critical constraint that the slag is environmentally stable. Examples of successful solid waste slagging practice, including tonnage, utilization and pricing, are provided from metallurgical and waste treatment operations of North America. The Grants uranium region of northwest New Mexico is the largest uranium district in the United States (approximately 50% of U.S. production plus reserves) and one of the largest In the world, with approximately 900 million pounds U308 production plus reserves. Deposits of the region are unusual among sandstone deposits for their high content of epigenetic carbonaceous material, generally interpreted but not proved to be of humic origin--that is, co-extensive with uranium in the primary deposits. Virtually all production in the region has been from the Jackpile Sandstone and Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. The tabular uranium deposits contain, in addition to humate and uranium, significant authigenic phyllosilicates, quartz overgrowths, humate-replaced detrital silicates, and a trace-metal assemblage typical of other sandstone uranium deposit types. Surrounding the deposits in the two sandstone units of the Morrison Formation is an alteration zone within which iron leaching has altered detrital ilmenite-magnetite to residual masses of titanium oxides. Feldspar alteration is locally present within this zone, below deposits in the Jackpile Sandstone, and above those in the Westwater Canyon Member. The feldspar alteration increases in inten¬sity toward the Brushy Basin Member which separates the two sandstone units, ranging from partial replacement to replacement and dissolution of plagioclase and sanidine. Spatial relations among the epigenetic humate, authigenic silicates, and the broad alteration zones that extend from the Brushy Basin Member to and including the uranium deposits suggest that (a) the organic material was involved in the unusual silicate alteration, transport, and authigenesis, and (b) that the humates originated in shales of the Brushy Basin Member. Stratigraphic relations among the Brushy Basin Member and the overlying Jackpile Sandstone and underlying Westwater Canyon Member suggest [in turn] that there was continuous, interfingering deposition controlled in part by contemporaneous basement subsidence along northwest- and northeast-trending zones. Following minor erosion of upper Jackpile Sandstone and deposition of basal organic-rich Cretaceous sediments, the silicates of the Jackpile Sandstone were once again altered by organic-bearing fluids, this time permeating down from Cretaceous sediments and partly obliterated ore-stage alteration.

As the tunneling industry continues to adopt Tunnel 4.0, digital twins of the tunnel construction site are becoming standard requirements for tunneling projects. However, the benefits of these remain unproven to many practitioners. The paper discusses the various implementations of digitalization and describes efforts to combine all data types to analyze the relationships between influences, predictions and performance in a single digital platform. This includes data pertaining to investigations, design, construction, monitoring and post-construction asset performance and management. Based on 16 years of global tunneling projects the paper aims to quantify the tangible and intangible benefits of such systems. Using a number of real examples, the paper describes where opportunities were taken and where they went unrealized. Challenges and considerations for both procuring and developing these digital twins are also discussed.

The design of slurry launders has usually been based on strictly empirical concepts. An examination of the most common procedures reveals that they do not account for many of the variables that are recognized as Significant for slurry transport. These may include flow rate, volume concentration of solids, solids specific gravity, solids size distribution particle shape, launder geometry, and roughness of the wetted surface. It was decided to develop a design procedure, which would accomplish two things: First: Take into consideration most of the known significant variables and systematize the procedure to assure consistent results. Second: Provide a rational basis for examining and utilizing operating data to refine and improve the system. To accomplish this, it was necessary to develop a basic design concept. This concept has been developed through a complex development history, and yet still appears workable and technically sound. That concept may be outlined as follows: First: The solids transport velocity is the fundamental basis for slurry launder design. Second: The stream configuration, hence the launder size, is integrated with the solids transport velocity so that the actual stream velocity exceeds the solids transport velocity. Third: The launder slope is that which will achieve the required actual stream velocity. It was originally planned to utilize a series of charts and nomographs for the design procedure. A nomograph, based on data given in Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing (1), was developed to determine the solids transport velocity. The velocity thus determined was used with Manning charts to determine the launder slope .and configuration as though the fluid were water. It was planned to utilize a "slope adjustment factor" to increase the slope to compensate for the apparent viscosity of the slurry. All attempts to develop a suitable correction factor failed. This failure was principally due to the complex relationship of viscosity to the required slope. It was then decided to revise the entire approach. Specifically, the present procedure is based on the Darcy-Weisbach flow equation, which is rationally preferable to the Manning equation. The Camp (2) equation is used for the solids transport velocity. The necessity of reference to the Moody curves for the Darcy friction factor is avoided by using the Colebrook and White (3) equation. The resulting mathematics require iterative solutions for several of the unknowns.

"The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, mandates evaluation of remediation alternative using nine criteria: (1) overall protection of human health and the environment, (2) compliance with ARARs (applicable or relevant and appropriate standards), (3) long-term effectiveness and permanence, (4) reduction of toxicity, mobility or volume, (5) short-term effectiveness, (6) implementability, (7) cost, (8) state acceptance, and (9) community acceptance. Many states have adopted these or similar criteria for remedy selection under state laws. Although not explicitly addressed in the CERCLA criteria, consideration of sustainability can be incorporated into these criteria. This paper explores how sustainability can be evaluated for remedy selection using the CERCLA criteria. INTRODUCTION Sustainability considerations can be incorporated into all phases of site remediation: • Site investigation (remedial investigation). • Remedy selection. • Remedial design. • Remediation construction. • Operations, maintenance, and monitoring. This paper focuses on remedy selection. Many have looked at remedy selection using sustainability criteria. However, CERCLA and corresponding State programs require remedy selection using mandatory criteria. This paper shows how sustainability can be explicitly considered using the mandatory criteria. REVIEW OF CERCLA CRITERIA First, we review the definitions of the CERCLA criteria. We then explore how sustainability criteria can be fit into the CERCLA criteria. Overall Protection of Human Health and the Environment This criterion addresses the degree to which each alternative is protective of human health and the environment, considering both long-term and short-term risks. Overall protectiveness is a ""threshold"" criterion, in that alternatives that do not achieve adequate protection of human health or the environment are eliminated from further consideration. Evaluation of this criterion is derived from the evaluation of the other criteria (e.g., long-term effectiveness and permanence, and short-term effectiveness). It is not an independent criterion, but more a summary of the overall evaluation."

This paper discusses the importance of innovation for the mining industry and describes the mechanisms by which it is carried out. It includes a review of the drivers and actors involved and current trends. The digital transformation process that the industry is going through is analyzed, along with other relevant trends that are likely to shape the mining of the future. Additionally, a case study is presented to illustrate the technical and economic implications of developing a disruptive innovation project.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the small town of Andacollo, Chile (population 14,000) in the fourth region. It is approximately 35 miles by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena, and Santiago lies about 300 miles to the south (see map.) Site elevation varies between 3300 feet and 4200 feet. The climate at the site is moderate but arid, with an average annual rainfall of only five inches. Because there is little rain, and the temperature varies only a few degrees (57"F to 75°F); there are no freezing, solution dilution, or pad saturation problems. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.
