Introduction It is now believed that, even with the environmental protection measures now being taken, the further application of traditional coal-mining and electric power-generation technologies will inevitably cause further irreversible damage to the global ecosystem. Further improvements in conventional coal-mining technologies, both surface and underground, are expected to have only limited impacts on the economical, ecological and social aspects of coal mining. In countries with a developed coal industry, coal reserves with favorable conditions at shallow depths are rapidly being depleted. Therefore, in the future, more coal will be mined from deeper levels, resulting in higher operational costs and lower labor productivity. The solution to this problem is to be found in developing, promoting and implementing unconventional coal-mining and advanced clean-coal technologies. This paper presents an unconventional concept that has been suggested by the authors. The basic goal is to achieve coal-methane energy resource conservation and to remove barriers to energy efficiency through the adoption of integrated, ecologically clean, innovative technology. The following principles form the foundation of this concept: Energy resource conservation: This principle concerns the exploitation of actual and potential coal-methane reserves in the most effective way with the lowest possible losses and with the application of the most energy-efficient electric power-generation technology. Energy conversion: Energy conversion means the conversion of solid coal to synthetic fuel gas (in situ or in-cycle), the conversion of methane bounded within the coal matrix to free-flowing drained meth¬ane, the conversion of solid coal in situ to a coal/water mixture (slurry), and the conversion of these gas fuels into electric power. Technological and managerial integration: This prin¬ciple means an integration of coal-gas methane min¬ing operations and electric power generation into one commercial mine-to-product enterprise with electric power as the final product. Thus, coalbed methane drainage and coal gasification (both in situ and in-cycle) integrated with a combined cycle of electric power generation constitutes a highly integrated coal-gas methane energy-generation system. The system can be materialized in the form of a local integrated coal-gas electric power complex (LICGEPC). General features of the new concept The coal-gas-methane electricity concept is actually a synthesis of the following four technological components: Coalbed methane drainage. This technique and its utilization attained recognition after commercial operations were proven successful in the San Juan and Black Worriers coalfields in the United States. Worldwide, extensive field experiments and research-and-development activities are being carried out in the area of coalbed methane exploitation and utilization. Recently, coalbed methane drainage for power generation has been undergoing intensive research and development. At the Harworth Colliery in the United Kingdom, a combinedcycle power plant has been built that uses coalbed methane. The plant has an installed capacity of 15 MW Also, Germany, Australia, the CIS and China have conducted various experiments and industrial tests on the use of coalbed methane power generation. Underground coal gasification. Another unconventional technological approach is underground coal gasification (UCG). A number of semi-commercial, demonstration and pilot projects have been undertaken in Russia, the Ukraine, Uzbekistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and Belgium to demonstrate the technical and economical viability of coal gasification in situ. In Uzbekistan, the Angren coal-gasification station has been in full-scale commercial operation for two decades. The operation supplies a power plant with synthetic coal gas. Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado is an example of the potential impact that natural weathering and mining activities can have on environmental quality. Acid rock drainage and metals leaching from active and historic mine districts are a major environmental problem facing the mining industry today. Sulfide ore exposed naturally or during mining operations has the potential to produce leachates that contain high concentrations of dissolved metals. These leachates can affect the quality of plant and animal health in surface water used for agriculture, recreation and human consumption. Pintail Systems has developed biological processes for detoxification of cyanide in heap-leached spent ore and process solutions. During application of spent ore cyanide bio-detox processes we have also observed a substantial reduction in many of the leachable metals in biotreatment solutions. These field observations of soluble metal reduction led us to propose that metal bio-mineralization should be a secondary treatment goal of spent ore detox in Focused Feasibility Studies (FFS) for the Summitville Mine. In the FFS (described in a companion paper) for Summitville, spent ore from the heap leach pile (HLP) was loaded into PVC test columns (six inch X ten foot) and was leached with bacteria/nutrient solutions. Two treatment designs were studied: a standard percolation leach (aerobic) and a saturated leach design where the ore was saturated with the heap leach solution to which bacteria and nutrients were applied in a continuous biotreat leach. The bacteria for all column treatment tests were isolated from the spent ore at depth through the Heap Leach Pile (HLP) in the saturated and unsaturated zones. Bacteria isolated from the heap material were tested for cyanide oxidation capacity and were submitted to a bioaugmentation program to improve reaction kinetics and metals tolerance. The final treatment population consisted of several distinct species including aerobic heterotrophs, facultative anaerobes and sulfate-reducing bacteria. The remineralization of soluble metals was observed through a decrease in copper in column leachate solutions and the formation of observable mineral products on ore surfaces in the columns. Several of the tests were run in clear PVC columns to facilitate observation of mineral formation. The column ore contents were photographed before, during and after the biotreatment process which ranged from 10 to 20 days for each test column. Ores were collected from each column after the treatment was complete and were submitted for SEM and TEM study at two laboratories - the USGS SEM Laboratory in Denver, Colorado and the City College of New York SEM laboratory. Treatment Process Description Numerous species of bacteria, fungi and yeasts are capable of accumulating many times their weight in soluble metals. Both living and dead biomass are effective in removing soluble metals from waste streams containing gold, silver, chromium, cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, cobalt and others. Soluble metals may also be immobilized in soils by natural or engineered biomineralization reactions. Several commercial processes using biological reactions are being applied on an industrial scale for metal remediation. Bacteria found in natural and extreme environments have developed a wide variety of metabolic functions to adapt to these environments. These natural microbial functions contribute to global mineral cycling that continuously forms, transforms and degrades minerals and metals in the environment. Biomineralization is described as a surface process associated with microorganism cell walls where the remineralization occurs. The biogeochemical activities initiated by microorganisms in ores, soils, surface and groundwater environments can dominate the formation and transformation of those mineral environments.

Limestone can be used effectively in treating acid mine water. Aside from a lower cost than for other treatment agents, limestone has the advantages of easy storage and effectiveness even when impure and in slack sizes. Limestone incorporated into waste piles in layers or as riprap can inhibit acid formation; limestone rubble packed in a mine entry offers promise in formation of a low-cost autogenous resilient seal.

A new radioactive tracer method for the measurement of airflow in inaccessible airways was developed. The method can be used in situations where studies of the mine-ventilation system are not possible using conventional flowmeters (anemometers). The method was tested in the ventilation laboratory at the University of Kentucky and in the US Bureau of Mines Experimental Underground Coal Mine and was utilized in leakage, dilution and flow-velocity measurements.

Slurry pipelines are used in a number of countries to convey processed ore mixed with water over long distances from remote mine sites to ports or plants for further processing. In Egypt and Sudan, numerous mineral resources are scattered in remote areas. Through the years, Egyptian geologists have identified 268 sites for metallic ores and 386 sites for industrial nonmetallic minerals. A large portion of these sites are in the Eastern Desert in an area called the Nubian Shield. Similar sites are found in the Sudan where mining contributes to less than 1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). There are three important components of infrastructure needed to develop these resources ? power, water and transportation. While Egypt is able to satisfy 70 percent of its needs in iron ore from the Gadideh Mine in the Western Desert, it needs to expand its other resources to reduce imports heavily sedimented. Dredging of these sediments and transporting them by slurry pipelines would enhance an industry of bricks or agricultural development based on tailings technology often used in mining. This article explores the potential for slurry technology for opening new mines in the desert or recuperating the sediments of the Nile. The technology by itself would be new to both countries and would benefit from collaboration, particularly to de-silt the Nasser-Nubia Lake.

I appreciate this opportunity to discuss with you OPIC's new policies designed to assist U.S. minerals companies in developing new sources of minerals overseas. A comparison of recent figures on U.S. investment in mineral exploration, development and production gives results which are remarkable --and disturbing. Through the 1960's the flow of U.S. foreign direct investment in mining and smelting in the developed and less developed countries were nearly equal. However, by 1973, roughly 80% of all exploration expenditures by mining companies was taking place in the developed countries and principally in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Clearly it is to the interests of both the developing countries and the United States to put these figures back in better balance. As you may be aware, the administration as a whole is examining systematically what can be done by government to reduce the disincentives and increase the incentives to mineral investment in the less developed countries --the LDCs. A subgroup of the National Advisory Council chaired by the Treasury Department has been formed to coordinate U. S. Government policy and program efforts relating to mineral and energy development in these countries. Among other matters, this subgroup will examine how public policies could positively influence the private investment decision-making process in the minerals industry.

The present interest in beryllium seems to be the result of recent developments in the uses for the metal discovery of significant deposits of disseminated beryllium ores, and the development of chemical and physical processing techniques, for recovering the beryllium values contained in these ores. At the present time most of the new and potential uses for beryllium are in the research stage of development and are not consuming large quantities of the metal. However, they do point to an expanding market. Interesting new discoveries or extensions of previously known deposits have been reported during the past year from the Boomer Mine in Colorado, the Mesquite area of Nevada,, the Chemalloy pegmatites in Canada, the Brazilian and African pegmatite districts and from other areas, However, this paper will discuss only four of the beryllium deposits, which appear to be of special significance due to their; large reserves of ore and promise economic development. The new chemical and physical processing techniques are not discussed in detail, but it should be stressed that the development of an economical process to handle the pegmatitic and low-grade non-pegmatitic beryllium ores is of great importance to the development of the beryllium industry. Scientists in both government and industry are co-operating in this effort and it is expected that commercial processes will be developed in the near future.

Sampling is used in all scientific, engineering, marketing, and financial disciplines. The scientific theory of probabilistic sampling is a well established field, providing a general framework for basic methods that can be applied in fields that would appear to have little in common. The revolution in sampling occurred, in part, as a response to the need for quality control in industry during the Second World War. Since this time probabilistic sampling methods have been replacing pre-scientific non-probabilistic methods of sampling. This has not been the case, however, in the mineral industries in the United States. No general agreement on a theory applicable to all sorts of particulate materials has been reached. As a result, non-probabilistic methods are still widely used and the measurement of sampling precision - the hallmark of scientific sampling - is unknown. Much of the research on particulate material sampling that has been carried out over the last 40 years can be characterized by a lack of theoretical reasoning and rigor, an unwillingness to acknowledge previous work, and a lack of integration with existing, established scientific sampling theory. Non-standard statistical terminology is used and often standard statistical terms are misused. The confusion that has resulted is reflected in ASTM and IS0 sampling standards and in the practice of particulate material sampling.

INTRODUCTION Our company has made persistent efforts to utilize the very latest cost-saving technology in tunnel design and construction. However, we were relatively late in joining the clan of slurry shield tunnelers. The challenge came in 1973, when our company was low bidder on a major sewer tunnel in Hamburg, West Germany. The tunnel was to be driven under the harbor region through coarse and fine sands with up to 60 ft hydrostatic head of water. Outer diameter was 15 ft, and length was 2.9 miles. This contract appeared right to enter the new field of slurry face tunneling. We gathered a design-engineering team to develop the machine, called it "Hydroshield", and used it on the project. The good performance of the prototype machine encouraged us to improve and modify the equipment design. The very latest model is now in use on a subway tunnel in Antwerp, Belgium. This tunnel is 21 ft outer diameter and 2.4 miles in total length. In terms of excavated volume it is the world's largest slurry shield contract. While the drive is still in full swing, we are currently preparing for 3 further Hydroshield applications, with diameters ranging from 12 to 32 ft. This paper describes the Hydroshield's salient design features, operational characteristics, construction reliability and performance levels, as experienced in West Germany and Belgium.

Improvements which have been made in commericial flotation systems during the past fifty years have resulted more from trial and error methods in the mill than from research in the laboratory. Research has often provided explanations of why mill changes have improved the metallurgical process. Hopefully, in the next fifty years, changes in mill flowsheets will come about, primarily, as a result of research work. However, since minerals, in their infinite variety, cannot be reduced to a standard state, research on commercial ores will have only a local utility, and research on pure minerals will have little commercial application. What will emerge from research on pure systems are mechanisms of adsorption, and this in turn may throw some light on the very much more complex adsorption processes taking place in the pulps of commercial ores. Quartz, without a doubt, has been the subject of more research effort than any other mineral, but we are still a long way from completely understanding its behavior in flo¬tation. Hematite and calcite have received considerably less attention. Ores containing a mixture of all three minerals, however, are commercially important, and the iron deposits in Alabama have been extensively studied by the United States Bureau of Mines (1). The literature reveals no reports of research on synthetic mixtures of all three.

The effects of pressure and cake thickness were studied using a split-plot design for pressure filtration of a fine refuse slurry obtained from a bituminous coal preparation facility. Pressure filtration offers the potential to significantly reduce the moisture content of the fine refuse stream with the addition of little to no flocculants, thereby minimizing the volume of refuse stored in impoundments and providing a recycle water stream for use within the plant. Experimental results showed that the final cake moisture decreased with increase in pressure and decrease in cake thickness. In addition, specific cake resistances calculated for the various tests indicated an increasing trend with increasing pressure and decreasing cake thickness. With increase in cake thickness, an increase in cake moisture and the weight of solids deposited in the cake was observed. An ANOVA analysis indicated that both cake thickness and pressure significantly affected the cake moisture, while only cake thickness statistically influenced the weight of solids in the cake. A regression model was developed with an R2 value of about 0.99 to relate cake thickness, the single largest statistically significant factor, with the weight of solids in the cake. Filter capacities were calculated in terms of the solids deposited per unit time based on a product specification of 25 percent cake moisture, and it was observed that the thinnest cake had the highest filter capacity.

Evaporite rocks, salts of the more soluble ions in seawater, are deposited when seawater becomes concentrated by excess evaporation in marginal basins having restricted circulation with the open sea. The simple conceptual model of an evaporite basin (Figure 1) has a single inlet connecting the basin to the open ocean, the restriction to open circulation being caused by a bar or reef near the mouth of the inlet. As the oceanic water flows from the inlet into the basin it tends to form a thin layer of brine that spreads out over the surface of the basin brine, and as it does so, the salt concentration In the surface layer gradually increases owing to continued evaporation of the water. When the solubility products of the salts in the surface layer are exceeded, the salts precipitate and settle to the bottom of the basin, The order of precipitation follows their order of least solubility. Normally the carbonates separate first, followed by the sulfates and chlorides and the more complex double salts. In nature there is considerable overlap in their ranges of precipitation. The water flow in the basin, also shown schematically in Figure 1, diverges from the inlet essentially perpendicular to the lines of' equal salinity in the surface brine. The distribution of salts deposited in such a model will parallel the isosalinity lines, being arcuate and concave toward the inlet (1)

Mining activity in Mexico began in the 16th century when the Spanish realized the mining potential of the new territory. Since that time, mining has evolved into a strong and vital industry for the country. Good professionals in the mining-related fields are fundamental to the growth and improvement of this industry. Since the end of the 18th century, formal education in mining has been available at the University of Guanajuato, in Guanajuato, Mexico. This school created one of the first schools of mines on the North American continent in 1828. In recent times, some other programs have been created at other universities. Universities offering mining related programs Listed here are the seven universities in Mexico that offer mining related degrees. They are the University of Guanajuato, UNAM, the University of Zacatecas, the University of Chihuahua, the University of Sonora, the University of Coahuila and the University of San Luis Potosi. The University of Guanajuato is the only Mexican university that offers graduate studies at the master's level. No PhD programs in mining engineering are offered at any Mexican university. Programs at each university are of different duration. They are: • University of Guanajuato-Five-and-a-half years, divided into five years of classroom instruction and six months in the working place. • University of Zacatecas - Five years of classroom instruction.

The Florida phosphate industry is a leader in environmental control, both in terms of dollars spent and significant achievements. For instance, since 1960 the phosphate industry has spent over $71 million for air pollution and control devices, including installation, research and development and maintenance. Water pollution control expenditures also total in the millions, with over $69 million spent in the same 10 year period. The industry also is a leader in water conservation measures, having spent nearly $ 18 million since 1966 for conservation devices. Since phosphate is mined by strip mining, land reclamation plays an important part in the environmental control picture. Here again, the phosphate industry has met the challenge with a voluntary program of reclamation which accounts for over 20,000 acres of land useable after mining has taken place. In terms of progress in environmental control, the industry has been able over the years to solve within the limits of technology the fluoride emission problems it once had, and is currently at work solving sulfur dioxide and particulate problems. In just the past year the industry also has been extremely successful in limiting phosphorus and nitrogen discharges into area streams. The industry continues to cooperate with state and local pollution control officials on matters of environmental control, and future plans include even closer cooperation and assistance, as well as increased expenditures.

Murray mine was one of the first Mechanized cut and fill underground gold operations in Northern Nevada. At the end of 2002 mine production began to decline and Murray entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary, in previously condemned areas, and in highly challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering, and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed Murray to remain in operation today. History The Murray mine is located on the Jerritt Canyon property, which is located 45 miles north of Elko, NV in the Independence mountain range. Mining operations started at Jerritt Canyon in 1980 out of several open pits. In 1993 underground mining began in conjunction with a decline of surface mining operations. The transition from surface mining to underground mining moved the property into a new era. At the time there were limited examples of successful underground operations in the area from which to draw experience. Several mining methods were attempted with varying degrees of success and underhand cut and fill proved to be the most effective method. To date Murray has mined 1.2 million ounces at an average grade of .335 OPT utilizing this mining method.

Cement raw materials used in southern California and Arizona cement plants occur in a wide variety of geologic environments. Limestone, the primary material making up 75-80% of the raw materials mix used in cement manufacture, is mined solely from Paleozoic Era deposits. During this time, 570-245 million years ago, vastly more limestone was formed in California and Arizona than at any other time (continent was in southern latitudes). The general geology of each limestone deposit associated with the eight southern California and two Arizona cement plants will be reviewed. Many of these deposits are geologically complex, having been subjected to Mesozoic deformation, metamorphism and instrusive events, along with Cenozoic uplift and deformation. All of the cement plants in this region require the use of secondary additives in order to meet the chemical requirements for cement. The kinds of additives vary greatly, depending upon the chemistry of the limestone deposit, cement specifications, and the cement manufacturing process. In some cases, clay deposits with suitable chemistry on or near the limestone sources are utilized. Where alkali limitations or need for alumina-rich materials exist, then specialty clay deposits are used. Iron-rich sources in the region include iron ore deposits and slag or mill scale from local steel mills. The geologic setting and location of these additives, along with gypsum and silica-rich deposits presently in use, will be mentioned.

Cortez Gold Mines is located about 75 miles southwest of Elko, NV. Activity in the mining district dates from 1862. The current operation developed from a 1963 joint venture of Webb Resources, The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and American Exploration & Mining Co. Three years later, the USGS discovered gold on the property following a regional geochemical survey. Drilling in 1966 and 1967 identified 3.4 million st of oxide ore grading 0.28 oz Au/st, and a 1700 st/day countercurrent decantation mill was commissioned in 1969. Heap leaching started in 1971 on low grade ore and continues to the present. The mill was shut down in 1976 following exhaustion of known oxide reserves. Mobile equipment was sold and the proceeds committed to local exploration. In 1980, a new plan of operations was developed starting with existing low grade and newly discovered mill ore. The mill resumed operations in 1981 and has been operating to date. A series of metallurgical innovations, culminating in the commissioning of a new fluid bed roaster in the summer of 1990, has enabled treatment of a series of increasingly refractory ores. Current partners in the venture are Kennecott Corporation, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Placer Dome U.S. Inc., manager of the operation. Idaho Mining Corp. holds a 7.5% carried interest.

Representative samples of a composite mixture of three typical Cu/Zn complex sulphide ores, namely Black-, Yellow- and Altered-ore, from the Cayeli deposit in Turkey, were used for leaching tests in 2.2 M FeCl3, or 1 M CuC12-2 M NaCl solution in the temperature range from 313 K to 363 K (40O to 90O C), with and without the presence of an organic solvent for elemental sulphur, such as CCl4. The leaching rates of copper and zinc were quite high, as expected, in FeCl3 solution and complete recovery of both metals was obtained at the highest temperature when the solvent was present. However in CuC1, solution, extraction yields of the order of 95% only for Cu and Zn were achieved and the positive effect of the solvent was not clearly shown. The kinetics curves of Cu leaching by FeCl3 indicated a model of reaction rate depending on the particle surface, as in a chemically controlled reaction, in tests with the presence of CCl4. Without the solvent, or in CuCl2 media, the model of the diffusion controlled reaction seemed to prevail. Values of apparent activation energy, in both of the leaching processes, were determined and compared with those reported in literature.
