In today?s mining environment, improving production, performance, productivity and profitability is crucial. Production, ancillary, plant and shipping equipment need to be monitored and controlled by online systems delivering production statistics and real-time information to everyone involved, including equipment operators. Traditional systems currently in use today, operate in an iterative mode constantly switching between scheduling and execution. However, the real world tends to change in ways that invalidate such advance schedules. Agent based computing has been hailed as the most significant breakthrough in software development and the new revolution in software. Agent systems are being used in an increasingly wide variety of applications, including complex mission critical systems such as Air Traffic Control. This paper presents the possible ways that multi-agent systems can be applied to mine production and rehabilitation scheduling problems with focus on real time fleet management, plant and equipment performance monitoring, downtime and delay reporting, stockpile management, personnel and equipment tracking and product distribution and transportation.

A problem that has continued to plague the Florida phosphate industry is the loss of coarse phosphate in the flotation circuit. Attempts to remedy this problem such as floating the coarse material (plus 425 µ m) in a separate circuit have resulted in limited success, but recovery is still not optimum. The Bureau of Mines is investigating ways to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate through improvements in the conditioning step. Studies to optimize conditioning parameters such as agitation energy, conditioning time, conditioner solids, and residual clay content have resulted in improved P2O5 recovery. Optimizing these and other conditioning parameters resulted in a rougher concentrate grading 30 pct P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of 97 pct.

Two-dimensional, finite-difference elastic modeling aids in planning an optimum seismic-acquisition scheme to define the extent of subsurface cavities resulting from in situ gasification. To understand the seismic effects of a cavity, two models are compared and contrasted. Model A consists of a low-velocity layer (LVL) in a half space; Model B contains a rectangular water-filled cavity in the LVL. Amplitude differences are the dominant effect on the surface records for each model. Cavity resonance and diffraction effects are more definitive in vertical seismic profiles (VSP's) and in a "snapshot" of the wave field. Interpretation and subtraction of corresponding records for both models shows the need for pre- and post-gasification seismic recording. Also VSP data are more informative than surface records.

The Dolph Mine fire site is located in Lackawanna County, PA, approximately three miles northeast of the city of Scranton. The fire was burning in both coal refuse (culm) and underground anthracite mine workings. It was reportedly begun by rubbish burning on top of a culm bank. A site investigation was completed in 2006 to define the extent of the fire and to recommend fire control measures. A cut off trench was selected as the principal control method. Plans and specifications were prepared in late 2006. The project was bid and a contractor selected in early 2007. The trench construction was completed in 2007. This paper describes the investigation and selection of the fire control method and discusses the trench construction.

Kaolin of the Georgia-south Carolina "Clay Belt" are used in a wide variety of filler and extender applications. Sane applications specifically require the performance enhancement delivered by incorporating kaolin into the product formulations. Other applications are less specific in requirements for an inert mineral filler. In order to be a feasible candidate for filling and extending, a mineral or mineral product must be generally inert (except where specific interaction with the filled medium is desired), inexpensive, easily handled and transported in a variety of forms, accessible to a broad segment of the desired market, and must exist in sufficiently large ore reserves as to assure production for many years. Of course, more precise requirements are necessary in specific applications of a prospective filler material.

The high tension process which separates materials based on relative differences in surface conductivity has been very successful in recovering non-ferrous metals from municipal waste. Aluminum is by far the largest constitutent of the total non-ferrous metal fraction; accounting for >95% in most localities. Wire and insulation mixtures from industrial wastes have been treated commercially for several years by a high tension process initially developed for use in the iron ore industry. The wire and insulation application was a forerunner of municipal waste dry treatment technology. In the past eighteen months the rotating-drum-type electrostatic separator has undergone extensive testing and development in order that the process might be efficiently adapted to the recovery of aluminum from municipal waste.

Copper slag is mainly used in cutting tools, abrasives, asphalt pavement, road construction, and in the production of concrete as an alternative to sand and cement [1]. As a renewable resource, only about 15-20 percent of the slag is used for these applications, and the dumping or disposal of surplus unused slag results in waste of a certain amount of usable metal in the feedstock [2]. In this work, the oxidation behavior of copper smelting slag under nonisothermal condition is studied using data obtained by the thermogravimetric (TG) method, and the kinetics parameters and reaction mechanism of oxidation are determined. It provides a theoretical basis for the comprehensive recovery of iron resources in slag and the selection of reasonable slag-making conditions.

The primary grinding stage in the Vuonos concentrator comprises a rod mill in open circuit and a semi-autogeneous mill in closed, circuit with a hydrocyclone classifier. The instrumentation of the grinding circuit is displayed in Fig. 1. All the measurements have computer interfaces and all the control circuits have been implemented by the process control computer. The crushed ore feed to the rod mill is measured by a belt-weigher and controlled by a belt-feeder. The pulp density in the rod mill is stabilized by proportioning the waterfeed at the mill inlet to the crushed ore feed. The slurry level in the pump sump is measured by a pressure transducer and it is controlled by charging the speed of the direct-current drive pump.

The mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources. However, consolidations in the mining and mining service industries, along with a generational departure of experienced industry professionals, is challenging today’s mining companies. These challenges are not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies. They oftentimes lack for operating properties to draw experienced professionals from. Also, juniors have to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This article discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development (Anatolia) in developing its Çöpler gold project in central Turkey.

The Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited (REGM) operates three metallurgical complexes for the recovery of gold from the Witwatersrand Gold Reefs at the town of Randfontein, 40 kilometers west of Johannesburg. Mining operations in the. area commenced in March 1889 and ceased temporarily in 1965 when the viable ore reserves had been depleted. Exploratory drilling in the 1960's indicated viable deposits of gold in the Elsburg reefs, south of the Witpoortjie Horst Block, _which formed the Southern limit of the previously exploited areas. Three shaft complexes have been established to exploit this area, known as the Cooke secti'on. In 1983 the Doornkop shaft was sunk to the north of the Cooke section to mine Kimberley reef and the South reef.

Research efforts which have led to reduced resin bolting costs at White Pine Mine are described. Key factor was development of the capability to drill small holes (1 1/8 in. diam) in the hard (20,000-30,000 psi) White Pine roof rock. Economic data comparing the 1 1/8 in fully-grouted Resin Bolt to the conventional 1 3/8 in fully-grouted bolt is also included. The development of a method which allows the Resin Bolt to hold itself in the hole thus removing the requirement for the operator to break his "work momentum" while he stops and waits for the resin to set is also described. This technique increased bolter productivity by 23% in a recent full-scale unit test.

An investigation of the removal of finely divided silica, coal, and alumina particles less than 20,µm in size has been carried out using liquid fluidized and packed beds. The bed particles used included 48x100, 100x150, and 150>200-mesh silica, corundum, and ilmenite particles. Important variables examined included surface charge, flow rate, pH and amount of bed particles. Surface charge has been identified as the most important variable in this system. Van der Waals force also assumes a very important role in the recovery of fine particles in fluidized and packed beds. In addition to interaction between large and fine particles, interaction between fine particles themselves assumes an important role in the overall recovery.

This chapter will summarize some of the important applications in the geotechnical (pit slope, spoil pile and tailings stability, and hydrology), the environmental (including reclamation), and equipment selection and analysis areas. Virtually all aspects discussed are applicable both for planning of new mines and for evaluating existing operations. Probably the most influential item which has affected the areas discussed in this chapter and possibly most areas discussed in this book is and will continue to be, in the next decade, the myriad federal and state environmental, safety, and reclamation regulations affecting new mine development and continued operation of existing properties. Computer applications have been and will continue to be instrumental in assisting in planning to meet the challenges of the requirements dictated by these regulations.

The transport of lithium through a supported liquid membrane was studied with a mixture of D2EHPA and TBP in kerosene as a mobile carrier. In the flat- sheet supported liquid membrane(SLM) system, experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of concentration of mobile carriers in the membrane solution, hydrogen ion in the feed solution, and temperature on the transport of lithium. Experimental results agreed well with a transport model for permeating lithium across the liquid membrane. The permeation rates of lithium can be explained in terms of diffusion of a Li-complex through the membrane phase. For a practical application of an SLM method, a hollow fiber module has been used and lithium can be concentrated more than three times in 24 hours.

Selective adsorption and surface modification of minerals by surfactants is the primary step in the process of separating certain minerals with similar physical and chemical characteristics in the flotation process. In this study, microorgan- isms are used as surface modifiers for francolite and dolomite. Results of adsorption experiments with francolite and dolomite show that the microbes selectively adsorb to one of the minerals under specific operating conditions. In preliminary flotation experiments, it is found that the microorganisms enhance or depress flotation of the minerals leading to an increase in the efficiency of separation between the francolite and dolomite. The conditions leading to selective adsorption (surface modification) and subsequently to possible efficient separation of these two minerals are discussed in this paper.

Design of the Bajo de la Alumbrera project started in June 1995. Concentrate production began early in the third quarter of 1997. The project is situated in northwestern Argentina. Alumbrera is being developed by Minera Alumbrera, which is owned by MIM Holdings of Australia (50%), North Limited of Australia (25%) and Rio Algom of Canada (25%). Alumbrera is Argentina's first modern copper mine. This article outlines the key process- and plant-layout features that were incorporated in the Alumbrera concentrator design. It explains the background of flowsheet and equipment selection for the plant. A feature of the flowsheet is that it incorporates gravity-gold circuits in both the primary and the regrind circuits for recovery of gold to dore as well as in the copper concentrate product.

Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world's aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world's commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted's discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville's method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer's work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today's aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:' building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. The Spar Lake deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 27 km (17 miles) south of Troy, MT, under Mt. Vernon. The deposit is a stratiform, stratabound copper-silver deposit occurring in the Revett Formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. Distribution of known sandstone-type deposits in the Revett Formation is shown in Fig. 1.

This paper presents a 20-year global account of tunneling in gassy ground demonstrating high probability of schedule delays, cost overruns, worker injuries and fatalities. Causes of these failures are systemic. Gas is seldom characterized in terms relevant to design of effective ventilation systems. Control measures deployed in tunnels are often based on outdated industrial safety codes. A change in approach is needed. This paper describes how to perform a desk study to determine if field investigation for gas is warranted, and lists the content of an effective characterization of gas in a geotechnical report.

Exports of crude gypsum from Mexico currently comprise about 60% of all domestic shipments, and about 25% of the imported material consumed in the U.S. wallboard industry. However, of growing importance are the domestic markets for calcined gypsum in Mexico including building plasters and wallboard, which account for 55% of the internal demand for natural mined material. This paper will examine the current trends in the production and trade of natural mined gypsum in Mexico and North America and the opportunities and threats that are facing existing and new suppliers in this changing market.
