The Canada Line is a 19km long automated light rapid transit system with 16 stations in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The Concession was awarded to InTransitBC to design, build, partially finance, operate, and maintain the system for 35 years. The project must be complete by November 2009 to be ready for the 2010 Winter Olympics to be held in Vancouver and Whistler, BC. The bored tunnel section consists of 2.45 km of twin bored tunnel and 3 stations. The station work is limited to the excavations and temporary support necessary to facilitate the bored tunnel works. A joint venture between SNC-Lavalin Constructors Pacific and SELI (SSJV) has recently completed the design and construction of this section. Work for the bored tunnel commenced in November 2005 with shoring and excavation works for the tunnelling operations pit that will become Olympic Village Station and will be completed in the spring of 2008. The tunnels were driven with a 6m diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBM) and lined with 250mm thick, 5.3m diameter precast concrete segments. Seven hundred and fifty meters of each tunnel were driven through glacial and interglacial deposits of sand, silt, and clay with granitic boulders. The paper discusses the challenges faced in negotiating these soils which contained unforeseen geological conditions. These conditions were overcome by developing a systematic approach to Risk Management that included thorough risk assessments, regular risk management meetings with the participation of two of the world?s leading EPBM experts, Professor Eisenstein and Professor Kovári, and by the ability of the construction team to effectively analyze and mitigate problems.

INTRODUCTION In late 1970, an experimental geophysical program was undertaken at the Lake Huron Tunnel for the purpose of developing a geophysical technique that could be applied to determining the thickness of rock above the crown of the tunnel and identifying anomalous geologic conditions ahead of the face as the tunnel was advanced. The Lake Huron Tunnel is an 18.5 foot diameter machine bored tunnel having a total length of approximately 6 miles. The easternmost 4.5 mile section of the tunnel extends offshore beneath Lake Huron. At the time this study was started, approximately 1.5 miles of bore remained to be completed at the east end of the project. The tunnel is part of a raw water intake for the City of Detroit water supply. The Lake Huron Tunnel is bored in Antrim shale, a dense marine shale of Mississippian or Devonian age. The west end of the project encountered banded brown shale containing numerous calcareous concretions ranging in size from a few inches to more than 16 feet in diameter. As the tunnel was advanced in an easterly direction, a transition was encountered into very uniform gray shale. One set of prominent vertical joints was encountered with a strike running approximately 15 to 20 degrees askew of the tunnel axis. Bedding is essentially flat. Variable quantities of salt water and natural gas occur in the rock. The results of exploratory drilling carried out for preliminary design studies indicated that as little as 30 to 35 feet of rock cover could be expected under the lake at the east end of the project.

The gold leaching using cyanide from ore or waste has been almost universally in use [1]. Recently, biological gold bioleaching using cyanide producing bacteria, e.g. Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas fluorescens, or P. aeruginosa, has been investigated as environmental friendly and cost effective method. Among them, C. violaceum has been reported as effective cyanide producing bacterium on gold leaching [2, 3]. C. violaceum produces cyanide using glycine as a direct precursor and subsequently detoxify the cyanide by ß-cyanoalanine synthase [4]. However, until today only 0.026 ? 16.9 mg/L of cyanide production in YP medium has been reported in the literatures by C. violaceum [4-6]. Comparing with adding cyanide chemical, biogenic cyanide concentration is lower than the cyanide concentration added in traditional cyanidation. Since cyanide also forms complexes with a number of other elements such as iron, nickel, zinc, silver, copper, and platinum, it is very important for gold recovery to investigate the enhancement of biological cyanide production and set optimal experimental condition. Most of early studies on gold bioleaching by C. violaceum have been performed to investigate gold leaching mechanism using gold powder, and recently various resources such as ores, electronic scrap, and printed circuit boards of waste electronics [7]. Few studies have dealt with gold bioleaching from low-grade ore. In this research the feasibility of gold bioleaching by C. violaceum from low-grade ores containing gold was evaluated and fundamental study was performed for further scale-up study. The aim of this study was to improve the potential of gold bioleaching by C. violaceum from gold-containing ore; in particular, enhancement of biological cyanide production.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon’s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon’s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (157. ) of Professor Gershon’s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

In recent years, a variety of new or substantially modified grinding machines have been offered to the mining industry with claims of improved performance relative to standard grinding machines especially rod and ball mills. The incentive for developing such new machines is high, because costs associated with grinding are a very substantial part of the total costs of processing run-of-mine ore, and gold ores are no exception in this regard. The incentive is also high because of the very low conversion of input energy to comminution energy in most tumbling mills. If the most energy-efficient means of mechanical size reduction is slow compression of single particles, then this energy amounts to only about 3% of that used in tumbling mills. It would seem, therefore, that there is a huge potential to do better. This paper examines three types of grinding machine for which claims of higher energy utilisation ( amongst other beneficial claims) have been made, namely the high pressure grinding rolls, the vibrating drum mill and various styles of stirred mill. It presents evidence concerning the claims, examines the range of particle size and particle size reduction over which benefits might reasonably be expected to accrue, discusses the major issues in contention and briefly describes the research the CSIRO Division of Minerals has in progress, both independently and collaboratively, the latter mainly with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) via the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) and the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA). Whether pursuing hedging or speculative strategies, gold miners can increase sales revenues 1 % to 6% by constantly pricing production forward. Unlike other commodities, gold futures prices are consistently higher than spot prices. A Colorado School of Mines study showed theoretically and empirically that in the 15 years since the price of gold was released from government control, the forward price for gold has been higher than the current price almost 100% of the time. The reason why Metal traders know that holders of metal earn a bonus selling forward when the metal is in "contango." "Contango" is a mysterious word that crept into the trading vocabulary a century ago. It designates a situation when the price of a metal on the futures markets is higher than the price in the immediate or spot market. If the spectrum of spot and futures prices remains static over time, the forward seller who has contracted at a higher than spot price can make a profit equal to the contango by redeeming his commitment at the lower spot price when the contract matures. Consequently, when a seller in a contango market hedges, he makes a profit on the transaction in addition to avoiding a price change risk. On the other hand, buyers of the metal who hedge in a contango situation will sustain a loss equal to the contango. Producers of gold, however, are sellers of gold. For most metals and oil, there is no inherent reason why futures prices should be higher than present prices. Buyers and sellers decide that the price of the commodity will be lower or higher than present values for a variety of reasons.

Increased interest in the utilization of the underground environment for water conveyance tunnels, vehicular tunnels, room and pillar type storage chambers, and military installations has focused attention on the possible effects of seismic activity on the stability of these types of structures. Earthquake experience has generally been related to the seismic stability on the surface of the earth. To establish aseismic design criteria, we attempt to predict the seismic exposure of a given site, both in terms of the spectrum of motion to which the structure must react favorably, and the recurrence rate of that motion. Experience gained from studying the effects of the Plowshare underground nuclear tests on existing tunnels and mines, coupled with the experience of the behavior of tunnels and mines in earthquake regions, provides us with an insight to predict the possible effects of earthquakes on underground openings and to establish design criteria. The type of damage ranges from minor fracturing and movements along pre-existing joints or faults through deformation of openings to collapse. The methods used to establish the seismic design criteria for an underground opening require modification of surface criteria to account for the difference in both amplitude and spectra underground. An aseismic evaluation should be performed on all important projects in areas exposed to possible earthquake motion. To perform this evaluation, information is required pertaining to the geometry and properties of structure and ground. Dynamic as well as static properties are required. A prediction of performance can be derived by exposing a model of the site, expressed in terms of its properties and geometry, to a design earthquake.

For the mining industry in general and gold mining in particular, the past few years have been difficult. Economic conditions, coupled with growing regulatory restrictions, have led to increasingly important reasons for managing assets wisely. From a public company perspective, such asset management makes sense because it ultimately provides for an increase in shareholder wealth, and that is why we are in business. Regardless of whether a company is public or not, assets must be managed effectively to remain a player in today's competitive environment. So, as the chief executive officer of a gold mining company, how do we manage our assets to ensure that we are satisfying our obligations to our customer-the Amax Gold shareholder? The gold industry has been under siege. We have just completed the third year with average prices below $12.85/ g ($400/oz). When finding, and/or acquisition costs and development costs to operating costs are added, there isn't much of a profit margin left. What this environment provides, however, is opportunities for growth. In the gold business, you either grow or you die. Today, most North American gold producers have, at most, a 10-year mine life. We are all scrambling to add reserves so we do not become extinct. As prices remain low, opportunities abound for increasing diminishing reserves. This is the time for the opportunistic company to take advantage of market conditions and that is precisely what Amax Gold has done. There are six components to running a successful gold business: • finding reserves through exploration, acquisition or joint venture, • financing the project, • permitting and constructing the project, • operating the project, • cash management and • communication.

Nast Tunnel is the first granitic rock tunnel to be excavated by a machine for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The machine has excavated 7500 ft of the tunnel at this writing. There have been a few good performances; 31 ft in 1, 8 hr shift, and 75 ft in a 24 hr period, but generally, progress has been slower than that accomplished in the area with reasonable comparable conditions using conventional excavation techniques. Button cutters, now employed using compression as the means of fracturing the rock, gives an average cutting rate of 3 ft per hr. Disc cutters manufactured by the machine builders were tried briefly but the snap rings holding the discs to the hub failed. However, disc cutting rates of 6 ft per hr were recorded for short periods of time in a competent coarse grained porphyritic granite. The snuck was also considerably larger and more easily handled than that produced by the button cutters. Hughes Tool Co. is working on a disc type cutter and expects to have them on the cutterhead by mid June. LOCATION, DESCRIPTION AND BID OPENING Nast Tunnel is located 2 miles west of the Continental Divide and 39 miles east of the town of Basalt in Pitkin County, Colorado. The outlet portal is in the Fryingpan River Valley at an elevation of 10,000 ft. The tunnel is a 3 mile long, 10 ft diameter gravity flow water conveyance structure and a part of the west slope water collection for the Bureau of Reclamation, Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. Indonesia is a developing country in Southeast Asia with a population of some 180 million people. It has a stable political environment and currently enjoys high rates of economic growth. Indonesia has abundant reserves of natural resources, ample for its own needs and for export. Energy resources include oil, gas and coal. The oil and gas industries are well established domestically and for export. In the last few years, though, coal industry development has been rapid. Coal resources from bituminous to lignite amount to more than 30 Gt (33 billion st). That is more than enough to meet domestic needs and provide significant amounts for export. Figure 1 shows coal basins in Indonesia. Coals in Indonesia are generally young steaming coals. They are very low ash and sulfur, high volatile, bituminous B and C. The Indonesian government's state coal company is called Perum Tambang Batubara. The company has actively promoted the development of its coal for domestic and export markets. In particular, the government has placed priority on non-oil exports of which coal is a major element. The government strives to honor all contractural commitments for the export of Indonesian coal from contractor, private and government mines. From 1987 through 1989, coal production has increased from about 3 Mt (3.3 million st) to 9 Mt (9.9 million st). Exports have grown from I Mt (1.1 million st) to 3 Mt (3.3 million st). These are significant increases for a small industry with limited infrastructure. But with growing investment and development, these production and export levels will increase substantially, and Indonesia will be a significant world supplier of coal in the 1990s.

The object of underground excavation--apart from mining-- is to create an opening to serve as a part of some useful structure. The value of the opening lies in its conformity to the design configuration and its stability during the planned life of the structure. The wire saw could be used to excavate openings of high value at a cost competitive with present methods. First, a discussion of present methods will be used to explain where wire sawing fits in and how it should be applied. PRESENT EXCAVATION METHODS Tunnel Boring A recent advance in tunneling technology is the use of mechanical boring machines. There are many ways that a boring machine can reduce the cost of a tunnel or increase its value. I will mention a few of the advantages that have been demonstrated in tunneling projects. A tunnel can be bored without overbreak, allowing concrete lining to be poured to the design thickness without waste. Boring creates a minimum of disturbance to the tunnel wall, preserving the natural strength of the rock and reducing the amount of support which must be installed to maintain stability. A boring machine maintains the tunnel at its full dimensions and proper shape, and it leaves no rock projecting from the wall which must be trimmed off. The use of boring machines is presently limited to openings of uniform cross section and great length. If the previously mentioned attributes of mechanical boring could be applied to excavation of a wide variety of chambers and passages, then a corresponding decrease in cost and gain in value would be possible for chambers.

INTRODUCTION The principle line of the Caracas Metro is located generally along the most important east-west traffic corridor of the city from the yards and shops in Propatria at the western extremity to Petare, and eventually beyond to Palo Verde at the eastern end, a route distance of 21 kilometers. There will be 23 stations along the alignment, underground, at grade and elevated, and the line is forecast to handle 1,209,100 passengers daily by the year 2000 with a travel time of 29 minutes between Propatria and Petare. This principle line was divided into three sections for design purposes: Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and Chacaito-Petare, Section III. These sections were further subdivided into subsections for construction purposes. The Venezuelan Government, through its Caracas Metro Office in the Ministry of Public Works, awarded design contracts in sections to PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF-TUDOR-BECHTEL for Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, OCOIDESA-GRID-APM for Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and OCOIDESA GRID-APM for Chacaito-Petare, Section III. Construction contracts were awarded by international bidding and work is now underway, by joint venture organizations of Venezuelan and foreign firms. The first two sections are under the administration of a company of Engineer/Inspectors in each section. The construction supervision of contracts in the first section is under the administration of the Venezuelan firm, Gómez-Celis-Herrera, (GCH) Engineers, acting under contract to the new C.A. Metro de Caracas that replaced ' the former Office of the Metro. The Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas section, approximately seven kilometers long, consists in part of the 2,951 linear meters of twin-bore

INTRODUCTION The extraction of gold and silver from ores, concentrates, and various metallurgical products can be achieved by a number of hydrometallurgical techniques. The solvation properties of alkali cyanide solutions on gold and silver were recognized 200 years ago. A cyanidation process for leaching gold from its ore was patented in 1887 and 1889 by MacArthur and Forrest. The solvent action of thiosulfate on gold and silver was observed over 100 years ago. Recently, several patents have been issued for processes using ammonium thiosulfate as lixiviant for precious metals, Berezowsky, et. al (1978) and Kerley (1981). Tozawa and and coworkers also examined the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal thiosulfate solution. Thiourea leaching of gold and silver initially discussed by Plaksin and Kozhukhova in 1941 but has received only limited attention since that early work. Use of thiourea as an alternative to cyanide was the topic of several papers presented at the 1981 AIME annual meeting In Chicago, Illinois. Hiskey provided a review of the fundamental chemistry of the dissolution of gold and silver in acidic thiourea solutions. Pyper and Hendrix reported on the leaching of a finely disseminated gold ore using thiourea as a lixiviant. The review article(6) previously presented was fairly comprehensive covering Important contributions to the chemistry of thiourea and the processing of gold and silver with acidic thiourea solutions. A search of the technical literature was made to determine recent (since 1981) progress and developments in applying thiourea to the processing of gold and silver. This review reveals that Soviet and Eastern European scientists are continuing to make major contributions to our understanding of thiourea/precious metal systems.

Proposals have been made by two organizations, the International Standards Organization (150) and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for a revised respirable dust criteria and criteria for thoracic and inspirable dust. These criteria yield different results than criteria based on lung deposition patterns in assessing the hazards due to dust exposure. Since these differences are a function of the size distribution of the dust an analysis of dust size distributions from various mining operations was performed to determine the amount of difference that could occur. The dust size distributions available for this analysis were taken from U.S. coal mines and from Chinese metal mines. The mass of mechanically generated dust that will deposit in the alveoli was found to be in direct proportion to the ISO/ACGIH criteria estimates in the mines studied. Therefore, respirable dust estimates for substances such as coal and silica are not a problem. Estimates of exposure to diesel exhaust in these mines, however, were not always in the same proportion to the estimated alveolar deposition. Also, concern with an excess of bronchitis among miners may not be adequately addressed by the use of samplers conforming to the ISO and ACGIH criteria. The cascade impactors used to acquire the data for this analysis require four to eight substrates per sampler. For daily dust exposure assessment this method is cumbersome and time consuming. Therefore, two new samplers have been designed to meet the need for determination of deposited dust mass. These samplers follow the lung deposition curve rather than the penetration curves proposed by the ACGIH and ISO and require analysis of only two substrates per sample.

BACKGROUND OF TARP The first settlement in Chicago in the 1830's was only 0.61 m (2 ft) above the level of Lake Michigan. The area was flat and swampy with local streams and rivers generally flowing to Lake Michigan. Repeated outbreaks of cholera and typhoid fever in the middle and late 1800's led to the reversal of the river system (away from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River). As a result of this reversal, the Chicagoland area has had to restrict water withdrawals from Lake Michigan and has had to develop and implement water management programs in compliance with orders set down by the Supreme Court of the United States. In order to comply with restricted lake diversion requirements and to compensate for a natural setting which was essentially hostile to human habitation, it has been necessary to embark on the construction of massive public works which include the world's largest water filtration plants, the world's largest wastewater treatment plants and finally the construction of TARP. The rivers and streams in the Chicago area are the headwaters of the Illinois waterway system. These headwaters are heavily polluted from combined sewer overflows of the area. Present pollution control laws require that combined sewer overflows be eliminated so that the rivers and streams can be used by the citizens of Cook, Du Page and Will Counties and other downstream communities. Fifty-three of the older most densely populated communities including the City of Chicago, covering an area of 971 sq km (375 sq miles), are served by combined sewers. Neanderthal technology is a harsh and inaccurate way to describe modern underground construction and mining practices, but such an exaggeration helps to focus on a major problem or wasted opportunity of modern society. Why is it not safer to excavate in the underground? Why are the working conditions still so unfavorable? Why are urban freeways, shopping malls, warehouses, power plants, sewage disposal treatment plants, and similar facilities still constructed on the surface of the ground--because it is a better location? On the contrary, if underground technology made full use of existing knowledge, underground resources and space would be much more effectively used. And why is the technology so inadequate? Certainly, researchers and practitioners are aware of the shortcomings and are equally aware of problems that have to be overcome. One of the most important reasons has to do with the type of policy goals that society has set in the past. Policy makers may have agreed that improvements would be desirable but no serious commitments have been made--that is, there has been no major allocation of resources to advance these technologies. And yet, to bring about significant changes will require significant time and resources. The resources that are needed are far in excess of what industry can afford to invest, particularly since the pay-off may be far in the future. So the problem reverts to society in general. As long as society is willing to tolerate the present costs and safety requirements for recovering minerals and for constructing underground facilities, then the changes will be slow in coming. The thought of constructing an intake shaft five miles from the shore and 142 feet below the surface of Lake Huron from the bottom up sounds like a questionable venture. Why would one want to raise a shaft from the bottom at the end of a 16 foot diameter, six mile long tunnel to within six feet of the bottom of Lake Huron? The answer lies in the fact that Lake Huron is seldom a tranquil lake. The construction period and workable days from the surface are limited. Two previous attempts to construct this intake shaft by conventional means had been thwarted by lake storms. These approaches were circular sheet-piling cofferdams with the intention of sinking a 30 foot OD, five foot wall thickness concrete casing in the center. However lake storms, particularly in the months of November and December, proved disasterous. The last attempt was halted in December 1970 when three of the seven circular cofferdams on the north side were destroyed by pounding waves. Then, due to the nature of the technical difficulties and limited construction schedule time, it seemed desirable to devise a way in which construction could proceed without being too lake-sensitive. Obviously, if men could work from the tunnel and proceed upward toward the bottom of the lake, not having to worry about the soil collapsing and bringing the lake in on their heads, the construction would be unimpeded by adverse weather. The answer to this, however, required techniques beyond the ordinary. Approximately two years previous to the start of this shaft, nine shafts had been efficiently constructed on the same project site

The American Borate Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Owens Corning Fiberglas Company under a management contract to the Hanna Mining Company, owns and operates an underground borate mine in Death Valley, California. The mine, named the Billie Mine, is located 24 km (15 miles) southeast of Furnace Creek along Highway 190. The ore body is under Death Valley National Monument with the major portion of the surface facilities located just outside the monument boundary. (See Figure 1.) The Billie Mine produces approximately 227 000 metric tons of crude ore per year. About 65% of finished product is supplied to Owens-Corning, the remainder is sold to other fiberglass producers. Geology The borate minerals in the Billie ore body were deposited in the lower main member of the Furnace Creek Formation, which is Pliocene in age. The ore body is thought to have formed from volcanic springs in or near a small lake basin. The deposit is essentially a limestone breccia that is permeated with borate minerals and surrounded with limey lake bed mudstones and shales. The ore body is mineralized with two main borate ores, colemanite and probertite. A third borate ore, ulexite, mainly occurs in the upper part of the ore body. The original mineral of deposition is thought to have been ulexite. Ulexite is a sodium-calcium borate hydrated with eight molecular waters. This paper discusses the research results of sulphide ore properties with respects on self-heating and the assessment techniques on mine spontaneous combustion for several mines of sulphide ores in China. A group of experimental devices for testing the chemical behaviour of sulphide minerals, the geological structures, the rate of oxygen absorption, the initial self-heating temperature, and the ignition point of ore samples, etc. are also described in detail. These methods have been proved to be effective by several sulphide mines which all have the history of spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores. INTRODUCTION A fire disaster from the spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores in a mine can produce large quantities of toxic gases and heat to pollute the working environment, lead to large economic losses and loss of human life, and even compell the mine to be closed. Some mines of copper, lead, zinc, tin and iron in China are of high content of sulphur. It is of great importance to evaluate the potential of spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores before beginning to design and mine the ore deposits. At present, the mechanism of spontaneous combustion accepted commonly is that sulphide ores undergo slow oxidation on exposure to moisture air at ambient temperature, with the evolution of heat, gases and moisture. The heat generated, if not dissipated, gives rise to an increase in the temperature of the sulphide ores. As the temperature of the sulphide ores rises, the rate of oxidation increases. If this is allowed to proceed unchecked it can eventually result in the ignition of the sulphide ores. For pyrite (FeS2), it reacts with oxygen and water according to the following equations.
