The Randgold Resources Ltd. mine operation in Syama Mali performs whole ore roasting followed by CIL gold recovery to produce gold. The roaster has operated continuously since the plant was first commissioned in 1994. The roaster design throughput is 216 tons per hour (5,184 TPD). Roasting provides for the oxidation of the· refractory components, organic carbon and sulfides. The energy balance for the system requires auxiliary fuel oil to be burned in the Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) reactor. Energy from the 1200-1350 degree F roasted product stream is recovered and recycled back into the CFB using two fluidized bed coolers; one to directly heat the secondary air and the other to indirectly heat the primary fluidizing air. The basis of the design for the roaster was an extensive pilot plant test program, the results of which were scaled up to the full scale plant design. Due to variation in the feed at the mine a number of roaster modifications were necessary following the initial plant start up. During 1998 ore flotation capability was added to reduce the operating cost for the roaster and increase plant throughput.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. The success of the industrial minerals end of the mining industry is often overshadowed by the high price of copper, the glamour of gold, and the nation's huge reserves of coal. Those three segments of the industry, however, along with every other business in the world, could not function without the products that are composed of a variety of industrial minerals. And, according to Haydn H. Murray, past president of SME, the value of industrial minerals in the United States is more than triple that of metals, about $19 billion a year versus $6 billion. In the developed countries of the world, he said, the value of industrial minerals is nearly always greater than the value of metallic minerals. Murray, also a professor of geology at Indiana University, was the luncheon speaker at the SME-sponsored Grinding of Industrial Minerals conference held in Asheville, NC this past September. Producers of industrial minerals know they must squeeze the maximum value out of the industrial mineral being mined and processed, Murray told the audience of about 100 people. Grinding and particle size, then, are vital to a commodity's profitability.

The introduction of liberalisation in Dutch mineral provision has created a lot of uncertainty on how and where to supply for the need of construction raw materials. Some possible effects of this policy shift are: 1. the extraction of materials from small pits with truck transport, 2. an increasing dependence on foreign suppliers, 3. the usage of marine dredged materials, 4. more input of secondary substitutes. The outcome of this policy and the resulting marketbehaviour have consequences for transport and infrastructure and hence for sustainability issues. Mineral provision, on the other hand, is also influenced by the availability of infrastructure. Insufficient transport capacity could hamper the development of mineral projects that render benefits to society. (Even) in a liberalising market for mineral provision, the central and local governments have an important role to play with regard to infrastructure and the effects of transport. Various trends point towards an increasing internationalisation in mineral provision. What will increasing trade and increasing influence of the market mean for transport infrastructure? How should increasing transport be judged with respect to sustainability? In the sustainability discussion these questions will have to be answered on a national as well as on a European scale.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Department of Transportation has underway an important new program which will have a major impact on rapid excavation technology. The Transportation Tunneling Program, as it is called, is a coordinated, multi-modal research and development effort. Its goals, if realized, will significantly improve our ability to build the underground structures needed for transportation. This, in turn, will improve transport efficiency, environmental impact, and the energy consumption associated with the movement of people and goods. Tunneling technology research and development had its beginning at the Department of Transportation in the Office of High Speed Ground Transportation (OHSGT). The OHSGT developed and implemented a program in 1965 to provide the technology for underground construction needed to support future high speed ground transportation. In 1967, when the OHSGT was transferred from the Department of Commerce to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the program accompanied that office. The thrust of the FRA program has been cost reduction through the development of new materials, innovative designs, and better construction methods. An overview of the process employed to assess arsenic exposure levels at a gold mine is provided together with the recommended control measures. Arsenic and its compounds are regulated in Ontario as designated substances in all workplaces except mines and concentrators. There is a proposal to remove the exemption for mine and concentrators. If the exemption is removed, the mining industry will be required to adopt the proposed exposure Limit of 0.01 mg/m over 40 hours. There are many mines in Ontario which will be affected by this new regulation. To determine the extent of which workers are exposed to Levels exceeding 0.01 mg/m , an assessment program was initiated at the mine. The main objective of the program was to determine the effect of the proposed regulation on underground and surface operations in term of compliance if it becomes Law. The data obtained from the assessment program shared that only 1ML of the workplaces monitored for arsenic indicated levels above the proposed limit of 0.01 ,/yard all workplace levels were below the present Limit of 0.2 mg/m .

The McDonald gold deposit is located in the upper Blackfoot Valley in Lewis and Clark County in west-central Montana, about 65 km (40 miles) northwest of Helena and 13 km (8 miles) east of Lincoln (Fig. 1). The McDonald project area covers about 20.7 km2 (8 sq miles) of elevated terrain on the north side of the Blackfoot Valley. The Blackfoot River lies 1 km (0.6 miles) south of the McDonald deposit. East Butte and West Butte rise 300 m (985 ft) above the Blackfoot Valley to an elevation of 1,750 m (5,740 ft). They conveniently divide the area into two parts. The Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture (SPJV) is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Mining (72.25%) and CR Montana, a subsidiary of Canyon Resources (27.75%). SPJV controls about 83 km2 (32 sq miles) of mineral and surface rights in the Lincoln area. The McDonald project is on state-owned and private land. The joint venture has conducted exploration since 1989 at the Seven-Up Pete, McDonald and Keep Cool areas (Fig. 1).

A series of performance studies were conducted using countercurrent column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia using a 150-mm (6-in.) inside diameter column that was 5.8 m (19 ft) high. Both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 150 µm (100 mesh) X 0 were tested. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5% to 15% while the ash content ranged from about 30% to 60%. The concentrates produced contained 2% to 10% ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12 to 1.25 kg/t (0.25 to 2.5 lbs per st) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/t (0.25 lbs per st) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from seven different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships used to design a full-scale installation presently in operation.

Rapid excavation includes rapid support and is the central theme of this paper. Over the last few years, enormous strides forward have been made in the excavation and material handling aspects of underground excavation. However, the technology necessary to support these rapidly created openings has lagged behind the other aspects. This paper would attempt to bring you up-to-date on the progress made in bringing ground support using shotcrete into the same productivity rates as the other cyclic operations. Shotcrete has become an acceptable material for temporary and permanent support for undergound openings. However, coarse aggregate shotcrete has been an expensive construction material. It has been confined in the main to difficult ground conditions where conventional methods of support have proved to be even slower and more expensive than shotcrete. There are two main factors influencing the productivity of shotcrete equipment. (1) Structural shotcrete as opposed to gunite requires 40% to 45% rock minus 3/4" in the mix design. High gradient permanent magnetic separators (termed "Ferrous Wheel") are described as used to recover the iron bearing minerals from mill tailings at the Grupo Acerero del Norte's Hercules iron mines in Coahuila, Mexico. The pilot scale test work as well as the "in-plant" test work provided the basis for a 385 MTPH plant expansion to be commissioned late in 1995. Approximately 6 million metric tons of flotation tailings averaging 50 percent iron, mostly as hematite, are contained in two separate ponds. The tailings are relatively fine at 93 percent -200 mesh and 72 percent -500 mesh. After testing various recovery methods, a high gradient permanent magnetic separator was selected to produce a preconcentrate prior to flotation. The separator uses a flux converging matrix to generate high gradient magnetic fields and capture the hematite. The advantage of the Ferrous Wheel high gradient permanent magnetic separator is the use of permanent magnets as opposed to electro-magnets. Further the vertical rotating ring is much more conducive to matrix cleaning as opposed to the conventional horizontal ring separators. Cluster analysis is used to design grade soft-sensors in a rougher flotation plant and a ball mill overload soft-sensor. Soft-sensors are virtual sensors which either replace unavailable actual sensors or infer measurements for non existing sensors. In the case of the grade soft-sensors clustering serves to determine clusters of related operating points. To each cluster there corresponds an ARMAX model structure whose parameters are estimated using only the points in the corresponding cluster. Thus a much better correlation is found than if all the data points were used for a global model. The problem of identifying clusters when the measurement of the real sensor is not available is addressed. In the case of the overload soft-sensor, variables were selected which are related to overload, either from a phenomenological point of view or according to operator experience. Different clusters are formed, some of which are identified as determining an overload condition or a possibility of such condition. Each of these clusters has a set of operating conditions which suggests the corrective action to be taken when necessary. Both kinds of soft-sensors are tested with industrial plant data and promising preliminary results are obtained.

Column flotation and selective agglomeration are promising advanced physical cleaning processes that can be developed for preparing premium quality coal-water slurry fuel from coal fines. Such a fuel could either replace oil or natural gas in certain industrial and utility boilers or else could be burned in advanced combustors currently under development. These applications require coal cleaned to sulfur and ash contents below 258 g/GJ and 430 - 860 g/GJ (0.6 lb/million Btu and 1 - 2 lb/million Btu), respectively, to meet clean air emission requirements. A highly loaded slurry must be produced in order to avoid derating the boilers, and the total cost of the fuel must be below $2.37/GJ ($2.50/million Btu) in order to penetrate the market by the turn of the century. Achieving these technical and economic goals depend critically on the selection of suitable feed coals. This paper describes the identification and evaluation of 18 coals and final selection of six coals from different regions of the United States as potential feedstock for preparation of premium fuel. The work is being performed under a cost-shared DOE project.

To date some 1,000 exploration targets (by way of adits, mine dumps, shafts, outcrops and unstoped mine areas) have so far been identified using an interactive data base system to query a digital data base comprising topographic, cadastral geological and mine components developed as a compilation of old plans, records, surveys and recently flown aerial photography. The exploration targets are intended for early follow-up as part of a 1987 exploration programme to investigate the reserve potential of the former producing property located in southern Utah. Of further interest is the unscrambling of old mine plans to provide drill targets for investigation of unstoped reserves with one target being a possible 800,000 tons in part of the lower workings. The project site encompasses about 3,200 acres of mainly patented lode claims covering most of the claims and mines of the Gold Mountain mining district formed in 1889. Turn of the century mining saw several mines operating whose total production was at least 143,000 oz. gold and 460,000 oz. silver from steeply dipping veins up to 20 ft. or more in thickness.

Although many ultimate pit limit design algorithms have been developed for the past one- quarter century, only the well known Lerchs-Grossmann's (LG) algorithm is capable of producing a truly optimum ultimate pit limit today. This paper presents a graph theory oriented algorithm for optimum ultimate pit limit design. This algorithm produces a true optimal solution and maximizes the total undiscounted net profit for a given 3-D block mine model. The algorithm performs much better than the well known LG algorithm, in terms of the reduction in computation time and computer memory requirements. More importantly the new algorithm is easier to understand and implement than the LG algorithm. Specifically, this paper discusses: 1) the computer representation of arcs and the rules of arc generations which dictate the formation of trees in the graph, 2) the mechanism of joint support and re-allocation, 3) the properties, the general procedures of the algorithm, and the suggested specific steps to implement the algorithm, 4) comparison between the new algorithm with LG algorithm, and 5) some experience in implementation of the algorithm and two case study results.

The Zadra, AARL and organic elution processes and variations of them are presently widely used to recover gold from activated carbon. Despite this the study of the kinetics of elution have received relatively little attention. It is the aim of this study to investigate the rate processes taking place during elution in both inorganic and organic solutions. Batch adsorption and elution rate and equilibrium experiments were performed. The spatial concentration of gold inside carbon particles at various stages of the adsorption and elution processes were measured with a scanning electron microscope using an image analyzer to control and manage the micro-analysis data. The activated carbon particles exhibited film and intra-particle mass transfer rate- controlled behaviour during adsorption in a caustic aqueous solution at 95°C. Elutions in the aqueous caustic acetone solution at 30°C and the caustic aqueous solution at 95°C were unaffected by change in stirring rate. Elution was modelled by desorption reaction rate-control at the outer surface of the carbon particle. Adsorption and elution isotherms under duplicated solution conditions showed reasonable agreement for the inorganic solution and a large disparity for the organic solution.

Grinding is a necessary component in the processing of a number of minerals, and improvements in this area could provide substantial cost savings for the minerals industry. Optimizing the process of grinding, however, is a difficult task because there are multiple objectives; i.e., several aspects of the process are important including the fineness of the ground product, the energy consumed in the process, and the viscosity characteristics of the final slurry. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are search algorithms based on the mechanics of natural genetics and have been proven capable of solving multiple objective optimization problems. These robust search techniques are able to rapidly locate near-optimum solutions across a broad spectrum of very difficult optimization problems. In this paper, two varieties of GA are used to optimize a grinding process as it is described by a computer model: (1) a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) and (2) a micro genetic algorithm (MGA). The performance of these techniques is compared to the performance of a more conventional search technique, a simplex algorithm. Results indicate that the GAs are efficient, versatile, quite capable of improving the grinding process, and easily incorporated into the toolbox of today's process engineer.

The liberation of methane during underground coal mining causes serious safety concerns. During a mining cycle, with mechanized mining equipment, thousands of cubic feet of methane are released from coal seams, discharged to return air courses, and vented to the atmosphere through mine fans. This has been the traditional way of removing the explosive hazards of methane gas from the mine. Through horizontal and vertical degasification techniques, this hazard can often be handled in an equally safe and much more profitable manner. Basically, degasification allows for the controlled reduction of inseam methane content of coal prior to its mining. It is the responsibility of mine management to evaluate these degasification programs and ensure that the program itself does not introduce some new risk to the mining process. The removal of methane gas from underground coal mines using horizontal and vertical degasification is a relatively new concept. Products and systems used in degasification continue to evolve. Site conditions vary also, so no one system or equipment can be said to be the safe answer for degasification in all situations. A constant process of cooperation and evaluation by mining and degasification management should result in a safer and more profitable mine.

INTRODUCTION The Harrison Western Corporation, a leading Denver based mine contracting and engineering concern, is presently engaged in sinking two 1,006 m (3,300 ft) shafts for the Phillips Uranium Corporation at their Nose Rock Project, approximately 13 miles northeast of the small community of Crownpoint in McKinley County, New Mexico. The Nose Rock Project is the first attempt by the Phillips Uranium Corporation to tap the deep uranium reserves in what has become known as the Grants Mineral Belt. (See Figure 1) Project Description Phillips Uranium Corporation's plan for the large 2700 metric ton per day (2950 tons/day) mining facility calls for a series of deep access and ventilation shafts ranging from 4.27 m (14 ft) to 5.49 m (18 ft) in diameter to approximate depths of 1,006 m (3,300 ft). The initial pair of shafts consists of one production shaft and one ventilation shaft separated by a distance of 91 m (300 ft). The interbedded layers of sedimentary sandstones and shales to be penetrated by the shafts contain several major water producing aquifers, the deepest being the mineralized zone called the Westwater Canyon Member of the Morrison Formation.

This paper discusses laboratory evaluation of a tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Technological University (MTU) under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus dilutes diesel exhaust and measures the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), CO, C02, NO and NO2 at known dilution ratios. The EMA was evaluated by side-by-side comparison of its measurements with those by laboratory grade instruments. During the preliminary laboratory evaluation concentrations of DPM, CO and CO2 were measured. The concentrations of CO and CO2 measured by the EMA were usually within ±14 pct of laboratory-measured values for CO and ±20 pct for CO2. EMA DPM concentrations correlated well (r = 0.96) with the laboratory values, but were 29 pct lower on average. The CO and C02 differences were observed to be related to the method of calculating the EMAs' dilution ratio and the difference in DPM concentrations is attributed to thermophoretic and/or condensation losses related to the EMA's unheated sample probe. Preliminery analysis of data obtained with a heated sampling probe and modifications in the sampling procedures have indicated reduced variability in DPM and in the calculated dilution ratios.

A mining operation in Zimbabwe produces a pyritic gold concentrate that requires oxidative pretreatment prior to cyanidation in order to liberate 80 percent of the gold values. Bio- oxidation offered the potential of increased gold recovery and was considered to be an economically advantageous alternative to the existing practice of roasting the concentrate. Based on bench- scale test work, a small bio-oxidation plant, capable of processing approximately 50 percent of the concentrator production, was installed at the mine to evaluate this approach. The plant included two 57 m3 bioreactors in series and the ancillary equipment needed to prepare the feed concentrate, to wash the leached residue prior to cyanidation, and to neutralize the waste liquor. The plant was operated for a year-and-a-half, and the conditions needed to achieve a 90 percent liberation of gold values were determined. A number of critical technical problems were encountered, and many were resolved on-site. Others have been addressed since the pilot plant was moth-balled in June 1988. Valuable insight was gained from the operation of the pilot plant, which has provided useful guidance for continued process and equipment improvement.
