9.1 INTRODUCTION Precious metals in a leach solution are extracted, concentrated, and purified to complete the process begun in the heap and to produce an end product which will provide an economic payback to the mine developer/operator. Several different processes are required to convert the dissolved precious metals into pure metal bars. This chapter discusses the actual production of metal once it has been recovered from the pregnant leach solutions by the zinc cementation (Merrill -Crowe) or carbon adsorption processes. Metal production is generally taken to mean the production of a fairly pure "dore" bar. This chapter also reiterates some information from Chapter 8 in a slightly different context, since the focus of Chapter 8 was a fairly detailed description of the two actual recovery processes, whereas the focus of this chapter is metal production. The sale of an intermediate precious metal product is possible (as opposed to the production of dore bars at the mine site); however, the value of the precious metals is reduced by the various charges and risks associated with precious metal processing. For this reason, most operators choose to produce the most refined metal possible in order to maximize project economics. Precious metals may be extracted from the leach solution by both conventional and unconventional processes. The conventional processes are activated carbon/electrowinning (ACE) and zinc precipitation (ZIP). The unconventional processes are resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. A typical ACE process has two circulating loops. The first loop adsorbs the cyanide-metal complexes from the dilute leach solution onto the activated carbon. A second, separate solution loop removes the cyanide-metal complexes from the activated carbon into a strong solution, the electrowinning electrolyte. Activated carbon is transferred from one fluid loop to the other. The operating cost of the ACE process is directly proportional to the quantity of carbon stripped and thus to the quantity of precious metal produced. A typical ZIP process contains a single circulating loop. The solution is filtered, deaerated, contacted with zinc, and filtered again. The barren leach solution is then returned to the heap. FUNCTIONS OF RAIL HAULAGE SYSTEMS The principal application of rail haulage in under¬ground mining is in the movement of ore or coal pro¬duction from near the mining areas out to a processing plant. In some cases, such production haulage may end at a shaft pocket or slope belt conveyor transfer station, depending on the type of mine and the geo¬logical placement of the mineral being mined. Main-Line Haulage The basic reasons for choosing main-line rail haul¬age are high-tonnage production per shift and long haulage distances. The choice between rail and other systems, such as belt conveyors, is not easy and requires an integrated study of many factors: tonnage, distance, grade, product size, number of producing areas, ore reserve, safety, capital cost, operational and maintenance cost, and the mining system. Projecting a main-line rail haulage system for com¬parison with other systems requires a choice of many variables which are interrelated. The project must start with consideration of the mining system, tonnages per day, distances and grades, and loading and dumping conditions. Rail mine cars of different sizes and types are studied. High tonnage demands consideration of wider track gages. A suggested minimum for metal mines is 914.4 mm (36 in.); for coal mines, 1066.8 mm (42 in.). The choice of the train size should be governed by tonnage per shift, physical factors of loading and dumping, cycle time, and the number of trains that can be operated and safely controlled. After the size of the train is determined, the type, size, and specifi¬cations of the locomotive can be selected. The loco¬motive may be trolley, battery, or diesel; selection guides are discussed elsewhere in this chapter. The advantages of rail main-line haulage are high tonnage capacity, flexibility, reliability, safety, low operational and maintenance cost, and dual usage of the system (supply haulage, for example). The dis¬advantages are high capital investment, high installation cost, the requirement for more maintenance facilities, and restriction to certain ore reserves and mine pro¬jections. Supply Haulage Supply haulage is a basic requirement of any mine, but the type and volume of supplies vary with the type of mineral being mined, the mining methods, and the size of the mine. A mine developed for rail main¬line haulage gains supply haulage through the addition of a secondary track system to extend the main line closer to the producing areas. Additional haulage equipment, generally smaller, is also added. It is neces¬sary to design into the rail system more switch bypass points and train control systems. The track system standards demanded by rail main-line haulage con¬tribute to the reliability and efficiency of the supply haulage function, whereas a supply track system to supplement other haulage systems often suffers from poorer track and installation standards. When belt conveyors are chosen for production haulage, a rail supply haulage system is often installed rather than using rubber-tired vehicles for supply haul¬age. The conditions of the seam or ore body create these items for consideration: haulage grade of more than 6% favors rubber-tired vehicles; longer haulage distances favor rail; difficulty in maintaining a smooth roadway favors rail; and movement beyond the end of a rail system generally requires rubber-tired vehicles, making a single system rather than a dual system attractive. Although operation of a supply haulage system may be concentrated on a single shift of a multiple-shift mining operation, proper planning and supervision are required if the haulage is to be efficient. Often the newer personnel at a mine are assigned to supply haul¬age which may add to the difficulty of obtaining maxi¬mum efficiency. Supply haulage by rail offers the advantages of high reliability, lower maintenance, and high efficiency over long distances. The disadvantages are less flexibility, high installation costs, and rubber-tired vehicles for use beyond the inby end of track often required. Personnel Movement The efficient and comfortable movement of the miner to and from his work area has a significant effect on his daily output. Minimizing man-trip time also becomes more and more important as hourly wages increase. Personnel are generally moved over a rail system by one of three methods: a specialized personnel carrier to which a certain number of men who work in a certain area are assigned; a combination vehicle, used to carry personnel but also capable of being used as a light supply/utility locomotive during a working shift; and man-trip cars towed by a supply locomotive. The first and second methods are used in coal mines where long distances make speed and comfort important. The third method is more common in metal mines. Equipment Movement As mining equipment technology has advanced, many mining machines and their subcomponents have grown in size. This trend requires careful planning for adding specialized carriers to handle the movement of larger equipment. Continuous miners, longwall equipment, raise borers, and ventilation equipment are examples of machines which may be difficult to move and which require special handling. The selection of the weight, speed, and operating characteristics of supply locomotives used to move equipment is important. Larger mines may often justify a special group of loco¬motives for this application.

The height of tailings pond (TP) embankments is frequently raised to accommodate the ever-increasing volume of tailings released by the mining industries. Excess pore water pressure (EPWP) may develop during the height-raising operations, which can affect the overall stability of TP. This article presents a detailed stability analysis for the embankments of an existing TP, the height of which was increased twice utilizing downstream (D/S) and upstream (U/S) construction techniques. A rigorous two-dimensional transient fully coupled-stress-pore pressure analysis is performed in the finite element-based package RS2 to examine the build-up of EPWP during different stages of construction. Furthermore, an attempt is made to investigate the feasibility of future height raising, with due consideration given to the influence of embankment raising rates. Results from the analysis show a development of higher EPWP within the tailings deposit in comparison to the embankments of TP, indicating the development of an undrained-like condition. The study further reveals that the development of EPWP is highly affected by the rate at which embankments of TP are being raised. A higher rate of embankment-raising results in the development of greater EPWP in comparison to a lower embankment-raising rate, which may lead to the ultimate collapse of TP. Furthermore, based on the stability analysis, the height of existing TP can be further raised by 4 m (two lifts of 2 m height) utilizing the U/S construction technique. A thorough cost and benefit analyses are however required before implementing the results of the current analysis since the storage capacity of TP is reduced while raising by the U/S method.

"Prospecting and Exploration. Since the Lake Superior ores occur in pockets or distinct bodies and vary much as to character and location, the actual mining of the ores is preceded by much work of an exploratory character. This work includes prospecting and exploration.Prospecting is the term generally applied to the quest for surface indications of ore, or the conditions which would warrant the expectation of finding ore in the vicinity. It includes such 'operations as geological examination, dip needle work, shallow test-pitting, and trenching. The ore bodies of the Mesabi Range are non-magnetic, and dip needle prospecting is therefore valueless. On the Cuyuna range, however, magnetic attraction as evidenced by the dip needle has been extensively employed as a guide to the location of ore deposits; in other localities it has found limited application.Drill Exploration. After the presence of an ore deposit is known or suspected, resort is generally had to exploration by means of diamond or churn drills. On the old ranges geological conditions generally make this manner of ascertaining the exact limits of an ore deposit impracticable; so, if two or three adjacent drill holes develop considerable depths of ore, the sinking of a shaft for underground exploration, development and mining is generally considered warranted. On the Mesabi Range, however, the flat-lying and comparatively shallow characteristics of the ore formation warrant much more extensive drill explorations. On this range, then, an ore body 'is almost invariably followed· out with the drills, and its limits are determined to the point where the complete plan of development can be worked out in advance of actual mining operations"

Excessive heat exposure is among the health and safety hazards that have adverse effects on the mine workers. The very nature of the underground climate makes it a convenient avenue for heat generation and accumulation from several heat sources including autocompression, equipment, and heat from strata. This study investigated the effects of clothing insulation and acclimation on the thermal comfort ofmineworkers who are exposed to heat in underground working environments. Several clothing ensembles have been considered to analyze the effect of the thermal resistance of clothing on the thermal comfort of workers. To investigate the impact of the clothing insulation, the thermal comfort limit of an underground miner was calculated in the form of maximum allowable exposure time for an 8-h shift. Parametric analyses were subsequently performed using an already developed thermal comfort model using MATLAB software. The results demonstrate that clothing insulation has a significant effect on the thermal comfort of mine workers. Increase in the clothing insulation decreases the maximum allowable exposure time of mine workers. This is especially true for the new and non-acclimated workers. Since acclimatized workers can tolerate a higher level of the dehydration and are capable of losing more water by sweat per shift, the maximum allowable exposure time for the acclimated workers are higher than non-acclimated workers. These analyses have shown that acclimated workers can have more continuous work per shift compared with non-acclimated workers. For example, in an environmental condition with clothing that a nonacclimated worker cannot work more than 5 h, an acclimated worker can work a full 8-h shift.

Many processes in the hydrometallurgical and chemical industries require the separation of dissolved material from suspended solids. Counter current decantation (CCD) with thickeners is one of the methods generally used. The process engineer needs a quick and accurate CCD calculation method. Several theoretical 1-12 CCD calculation methods are available in the literature . The simultaneous 1, 2 equation method for a complex circuit as used would take too long to solve the problems. Approximate equation method1 is not accurate and is for simple cases only. A shortcut method developed by Counselman3 contains no mathematical equation, and thus is not suitable for computer programming. Based on Counselman's method, Woody4 derived two simple equations in terms of percent soluble loss for two typical examples. Scandrett5 included a term for mixing in his formulas. This mixing efficiency was defined by Murphree6. Another method which depends on making volume calculations instead of using weights is presented by Mastin8 and Cahalan9. None of these methods is related to dissolution and pre¬cipitation reactions. Chen 10,11 demonstrated his methods for counter current leaching. His results are calculated from the general solution of a derived linear difference equation for constant underflow, and from the solution of a derived non-linear Ricatti difference equation for variable underflow. This paper concerns derivation of a general equation for CCD washing with provisions for adding and withdrawing the streams, and for leaching (dissolution) or precipitation reactions. As part of the Bureau of Mines research on identification of asbestos fibers, a method was discovered for removing asbestos fibers from water. This report describes this process and its theory of operation. The surface charge of amphibole minerals in potable water was found to be negative, and in common with most other silicate minerals, the isoelectric point of amphibole asbestos fibers lies in the pH range 4 to 6. Magnesia is one of the rare oxides with a high isoelectric point of about 11. The surface of magnesium oxide will, therefore, be positively charged in water at pH 6 to 6, while the electric charge an. amphibole asbestos fibers is negative. Because of the electrical attraction of these oppositely charged solids, it was possible to remove negatively charged asbestos fibers from water by percolating water that contained suspended-asbestos through a porous bed of magnesium oxide particles. A bed of 100/200-mesh MgO was added to a glass tube with a cotton plug. Aqusous suspensions of 1 to 10 ppm cummingtonite asbestos (amosite), crocidolite, and chrysotile were percolated through this porous plug of MgO. Even though chrysotile is positively charged below pH 11, MgO is an effective filter medium for removing it. The highly basic MgO appears to cause the chrysotile to flocculate and attach to particles within the bed. Scanning electron photomicrographs indicated that essentially complete removal of the fibers from water was accomplished. Other materials tested as contact filter media and found to be ineffective or only partially effective were sand, calcite, carbon, diatomaceous earth, and cellulose. Acidic alumina collected amphibole fibers but not chrysotile fibers.

Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.

The predicted warming of the earth's surface, presently the subject of much debate, controversy and legislation, is based on what is termed "the greenhouse effect." This is the result of the property of certain atmospheric gases. These gases allow the passage of radiant energy to the earth's surface and reflect back, to the earth, the infrared radiation given out by the heated surface. Physicists have computed that if there were no greenhouse effect the average temperature of the earth, now about 15° C (60T), would be close to -18° C (OT). Just what gases have produced this salubrious effect? Water vapor is the most important. Then come carbon dioxide, methane and a number of minor constituents of the atmosphere, both natural and man-made. Climate change, its cause and its impact on human activities have been the subject of scientific and historical study for more than a century. Recently, some scientists have concluded that if the man-made increase in the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases continues, by the late 21st century the earth's global average temperature will rise between 2° to 8° F. This temperature rise would cause the water in the oceans to expand and the massive polar glaciers to melt. In 1980, it was predicted that the sea level would rise 7.6 m (25 ft) by the late 21st century. By 1985, the predicted rise was 1 m (3 ft); and by 1989, it was 0.3 m (1 ft) (Jastrow, Nierenberg and Seitz, 1990). Agricultural scientists have pointed out that an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide would enhance biological growth including the production of foodstuffs.

Basing on a brief assessment of the conventional theory of ventilating air distribution, its methods of calculation and practical application, this paper makes an approach to the controllability of different aircourses of a ventilation network and further points out that it is possible for the positions of control to extent into the natural distribution subnetwork of the ventilation network, which was been long considered as a restricted zone. This important discovery makes the regulation of the ventilation system more flexible and diversified, thus attaining quantitative distribution of ventilating air as well as a cost benefit. Because it has been impossible to solve the problem mentioned above by conventional theory and its relevant methods of calculation, the author, based on applying graph theory on the structure, characteristics, and requirements of controllability of the ventilation network, presents a new controllable subgraph concept and the means for determining the rational quantity for control devices of the ventilation network. The solution of all the control alternatives and methods of obtaining all the parameters for the solution of various alternatives have been derived. The economic benefit and the optional positions of the control devices have also been approached. Specific calculation examples are a1 so included in this paper. Along with the conventional theory and its methods, it can be seen that the new theory presented makes a great change in the control aspects of the ventilation network, with the number of possible alternatives increasing in an astonishing manner. Among the alternatives, some may be safer, more economical or technologically superior than those obtained from conventional theory. Thus, the new theory may provide an immense improvement in the choice of a ventilation system.

The Henderson Mine, a new large scale underground development, is being developed by AMAX. The mine site is located about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, adjacent to the east side of the Continental Divide. The mine's three access shafts are in a narrow alpine canyon at an elevation of 10,400 feet. The ore body of molybdenite is to the south of the shafts, 3,000 feet below the surface of nearby Red Mountain. The ore extends over 800 feet vertically and is about 1,700 feet by 2,200 feet horizontally. The eastern and southeastern boundaries of the deposit are still to be defined at the present time. Development mining is advancing at the mine site on a three shift, seven-day basis at the rate of about 2,000 feet per month. About twelve miles of heading have been driven at the present time, and work to sink No. 3 Shaft has started. Development mining was begun in 1967 with the sinking of No. 1 Shaft. This shaft is fully concreted, 23 feet in diameter and 2,441 feet in depth. It is the mine ventilation exhaust conduit. It is also used for development muck hoisting, stand-by mine water pumping and secondary access to the 8,035 foot level. This level is the mine exhaust ventilation level and was mined principally by conventional rail mining methods. From this one station at the 8,035 foot elevation a 5% ramp was driven to the initial production horizon at 8,100 feet with diesel rubber tired mining equipment. Subsequent mining has been entirely by mobile diesel equipment at the mine site.

In April 1988, the joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen and Paschen Contractors (M-K/P) was the successful low bidder for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRD) Contract Number 73-164-2H. This project is yet another in the MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) devised to control and treat overflows from combined sanitary and stormwater flows. M-K/P's project, located along the Des Plaines River, consists of 21,569' of tunnel mined to a 35' diameter and two tunnels totaling 14,529' mined to a 12' diameter. All three tunnels will have 12" thick reinforced concrete lining. The path for combined sewer/storm waters to reach the tunnels begins at a connection structure, continues through an approach sewer, a sluice gate structure and down a vertical shaft which is topped by a backflow structure. The purpose of the backflow structure is to prevent water surging to the surface as the system fills rapidly. Backflow preventors represent a change in design after problems developed on earlier constructed portions of the T.A.R.P.. On this project, 14 drop shafts channel flows to the tunnel system. In addition to the drop shafts, contract specifications require an emergency or escape shaft be located not more than 4000 feet from the tunnel headings. Due to long reaches without drop shafts, four access shafts had to be constructed. Thus, the total shafts constructed under this contract will be eighteen plus one 30' finished diameter construction shaft located within Miller's Meadows. Figure 1 shows the overall Des Plaines River System and the M-K/P contract connection to previous and future MWRD projects.

INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. Now, if we accept the relation of underground space use to urban size and density, recent demographic trends seem anything but hopeful for future tunnelling demand: urban density is declining, population growth is slowing down generally, and there

Paste backfill is a pumpable, flowable, non-Newtonian fluid consisting generally of mine tailings and cement. Paste is prepared from dilute slurries of tailings. This is done by dewatering the slurries with conventional thickening or filtering. Backfill with a paste consistency is prepared by mixing dewatered tailings with cement and water to obtain the desired consistency of medium slump concrete. The paste is pumped with concrete pumps over relatively long (1 km or 0.6 mile) horizontal distances. More commonly, though, it flows by gravity down a mine shaft and then horizontally to the void being filled. Alternatively, cement can be added near the end of the pipeline. A certain proportion of fine particles <20 µm (<625 mesh) must be present in pastes but particles of aggregate can be added without significantly affecting the flow characteristics. Detailed testwork is necessary to design a system to prepare and place paste backfill. Testwork must determine dewatering characteristics, strength of mixes and friction in pipelines. Plants must be well engineered and controlled with PLCs because high quality control is necessary to prevent plugged pipelines and excessive pressures. Relatively small amounts of cement (3% to 5%) produce stiff backfill material 1.5 to 3.5 MPa (217 to 507 psi). The advantages of paste backfill in a mining operation include reduced mine dewatering, labor and materials savings, reduced tailings impoundment requirements, good support properties and reduced spills underground. In certain cases where more than 30% of the weight of the ore is sold as a product, the entire tailings stream can be placed underground. Paste technology can he used for surface or underground placement of tailings.

INTRODUCTION Construction of Phase I, Section A, of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System required that six underground stations be built using a cut and cover excavation technique. For five of these stations, soldier piles, used as support of excavation, were installed with tip elevations well below the bottom of the excavation. However, in the case of the sixth subway station, the Mondawmin Station, soldier piles were installed only through soil and decomposed rock, with the tips of the piles being stopped well above the bottom of the excavation in partially decomposed rock. Below the tips of the soldier piles, and below a cut slope where piles were not installed, the sides of the excavation consisted of partially weathered and fresh rock and were supported by a combination of rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. An extensive installation of geotechnical instrumentation permitted detailed monitoring of horizontal and vertical movements of the soldier piles and the walls of the excavation. Preliminary studies indicated that the excavation support system selected for the Mondawmin Station would have several advantages over a conventional system consisting of soldier piles extending to the bottom of the excavation, braced with prestressed struts. These advantages included lower cost of installation, a decreased time required for installation, and a more open excavation for the contractor during construction of the station. The Mondawmin Station is situated in the northwestern quadrant of Baltimore City, approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) from the center of the City. One of the primary areas of computer application in mine ventilation has been the analysis of mine ventilation networks. A variety of network analyzers that are aimed toward the solution of flows in a given network has been developed. These programs typically use the Hardy Cross or other iterative algorithm for solution of any network, even those that are complex. The computer software has become more efficient and sophisticated over time and has thus been widely adopted for ventilation network analysis. One of the shortcomings of these programs is that they have been developed with the idea of analyzing the ventilation requirements at a single point in the lifetime of a mine. This provides the ventilation engineer with an important tool for analysis but falls somewhat short of providing a convenient means to economically com- pare alternative methods for ventilating a mine. The program described in this paper provides such a tool. The principal concepts that were necessary for the completion of a computer program that analyzes ventilation alternatives is the capability of efficiently determining the ventilation requirements at a variety of times during the lifetime of the ventilation system and some method of analyzing the costs of the alternatives on a realistic comparative basis. To accomplish this task, the authors began using Penn State&apos;s mine ventilation simulator designated as PSU/MVS, Didyk et al. (1977a, 1977b) and added the necessary additional software to accommodate the need for multi-period, time-dependent analysis of the net- work. The software was then tested on a coal mine ventilation problem with a 23-year life. The problem points out the value of such a program for ventilation analysis.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were trans-mitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.

Flow in heaps and dumps is a two-phase flow phenomenon, though for many applications it could be simplified as unsaturated flow. Unlike saturated flow (typical of ground water flow), where permeability is independent of other hydraulic parameters, unsaturated flow permeability depends on the degree of saturation and/or on capillary pressure. Several recent field studies suggest that flows in heaps and dumps tend to concentrate in preferred pathways, bypassing much of the ore. Different preferential flow phenomena are triggered, promoted and influenced by different heap structures, by pretreatment, by the composition of the leach solution and by application rates and schedules. The structure of heaps and dumps is determined and affected by every stage of their construction -from blasting to crushing to conveying and stacking of the material. History of heap construction and operation combined with monitoring, mapping and certain field tests can reveal patterns of flow and transport in a given heap and can shed light on the physical mechanisms behind it. Such insight can provide a first cut on heap leaching enhancement by either eliminating or bypassing physical barriers to flow and leaching. Based on the understanding of the heap structure, advanced flow and transport models can be constructed and further enhance the insight. This insight is essential for understanding cause and effect and can provide a basis for decision making. Further, based on the physically-based models, an intelligent control agent, such as MRDS1, can learn and build a self-learning representation (or a model) of the complex heap leaching system, followed by dynamic optimization and planning of heap leaching and heap rinsing.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies&apos; "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.
