INTRODUCTION Typically, uranium mills produce slurred tailings which are transported by pipeline to a tailings impoundment. The slurried tailings contain about 250 solids (75% liquids) by volume and, depending on the milling process, have a high or low ph. Despite decanting water from the tailings pond and losses by evaporation and seepage, Staub (1978) estimates that for lined impoundments over half of the input water is stored in the tailings. As long as the impounded tailings remain in a loose and saturated state, potential hazards exist and include potential for short and long-term seepage from the impoundments and the potential for large scale release and movement of liquified tailings should an embankment fail. The breach of an earthen dam on July 16, 1979 at Church Rock, New Mexico, and the subsequent release of 100 million gallons of water and liquified uranium tailings, underlines the potential hazard. Loose saturated tailings also have a high potential of liquefaction during earthquakes (Charlie and Wardwell, 1979; Martin, Finn and Seed, 1978; and Mittal and Morgenstern, 1976). If the tailings could be dewatered, the liner's integrity would become less critical, longterm seepage and settlements would be greatly reduced. In addition, the potential for tailings liquefaction from an embankment failure or earthquake would be greatly reduced. This paper reviews the concept, criteria, and design of various proposed interior drainage systems to dewater the tailings after deposition. ADVANTAGES OF INTERIOR DRAINAGE The primary purpose of interior drainage systems for uranium mill tailings impoundments is dewatering the tailings as rapidly and as thoroughly as possible. The expected benefits of this new technology are: • Reduction of potential seepage losses by decreasing the hydraulic head. • Reduce earthquake liquefaction potential of the tailings by inducing non-saturated conditions and/or lowering the water pressure. • Reduce the potential for large-scale release and movement of tailings should an embankment fail. • Stabilize the tailings to permit early reclamation. • Recovery and potential recycling of tailings liquid. • Inhibiting long-term seepage out of the impoundment by inducing nonsaturated conditions to provide capillary suction in the tailings.

BP neural network is a multilayer feedforward network trained by error back-propagation algorithm, which is one of the most widely used neural network models. However, BP neural network has exposed more and more shortcomings and deficiencies with the expansion of the application scope. In the prediction of ore quantity, BP neural network has the characteristics of slow convergence and easy to fall into local minimum point. In order to obtain the global optimal solution, and to improve the defects of BP neural network, this paper proposes combination optimization algorithm of genetic algorithm (GA) and BP neural network to improve the speed and accuracy of forecasting the main design flow chart and the analysis of the sort distinguish algorithm are offered, and then some problem in the design and debugging of the algorithm are discussed. On this basis, the GA-BP neural network model is constructed and applied to optimize the initial weights and threshold value of BP neural network. This model choices the floating point coding method to encode the connection weights and thresholds, and divides subjects into several populations. Through the introduction of selection, mutation, crossover, initial weight and other operators, making operational synergies between the various groups. This study selects 30 geological units, 8 quantitative variables (Pb, Zn, Cu, Mo, Si, Ni, Co, V) and 12 qualitative variables to carry out empirical analysis. Then the simulation of the algorithm is carried out in MATLAB and the parameters are analysed. By normalizing the input samples, 22 groups of observation data are used as the training data for prediction, and the latter 8 groups of observation data are used as the test data to be verified. The results show that when the ore quantity characteristics are not very significant, the model will produce prediction bias. But the improvement of the algorithm increases the efficiency of the function approach capacity of BP neural network and conquer the BP neural network system’s instability. It provides an auxiliary guide for ore prediction, which have higher reference value.

My first regular job nearly fell through. My parents were spending the summer in California and I joined them at Lake Tahoe where we were guests at the lovely summer home of the Reids of Belmont. The time went quickly but I was eager to start work so I left for Bisbee a few days earlier than I had arranged. This was lucky, as just after I left a letter came from Gene Whitely, chief engineer of Calumet and Arizona, saying that because of the depressed copper industry there would be no job. I reached Bisbee on a Saturday morning, a day or two before my 23rd birthday, July 27, 1907. The brown plastei four-story Copper Queen Hotel was only a few steps from the station where the branch railway ended. I rented the cheapest room on the top floor and, of course, there was no elevator. I soon learned how to walk up the mile of switching tracks to the Calumet and Arizona office at the Irish Mag mine. I was horrified when Whitely told me about his letter telling me not to come, but since I had not received it he relented and said I could work for a short time anyhow. I was to start at 7:30 the next Monday morning, "holding the ignorant end of the tape”-in other words being surveyor's assistant, at $100 a month. Hours were from 7:30 to 5: 00, seven days a week. I spent Sunday walking around the town. I rented a room at the Royal Lodging House, which was cheaper than the hotel. It smelled strongly of carbolic acid but that meant no bugs. Compared with Cobalt or Cripple Creek, Bisbee didn't seem unattractive. The main street, with one or two-storied stores and saloons, followed the bottom of the canyon with high steep hills on both sides. INTRODUCTION At some point in the design and development stage of a mineral venture, the assay laboratory building, its interior layout, and major pieces of analytical equipment must be specified for construction or purchase. Even the most experienced chemist would have difficulty in proposing useful specifications without a good deal of investigation into the kinds of analytical tasks that the laboratory will be expected to address, the probable workload, and the operating time constraints. This chapter will provide a logical approach to laboratory design that starts with such an investigation. Specific examples throughout the chapter are drawn from the author's tenure as Chief Chemist at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, Mercur, Utah, from 1982 to 1985. It is necessary to understand the nature of a modern production laboratory, and to recognize that its operations bear more resemblance to its parent processing plant than to a research, teaching, or custom analytical laboratory. The assay lab is a processing facility unto itself, where samples and reagents are the raw materials, and assay results are the final product. Its most efficient operating mode is as an assembly line, treating samples in a nearly continuous flow. Nevertheless , there are important differences between the lab and the process plant. The products - assays - are individually unknown quantities until they are "produced.' This can vastly complicate quality control compared to the process plant. Capital costs are general 1 y small compared to the plant, but the ratio of operating costs to capital costs for a laboratory is often very much higher than for the plant. This is due to the labor intensive nature of analytical work. For instance, during Fiscal Year 1984 at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, labor costs for the laboratory staff represented about five percent of the total labor budget, while the laboratory building and equipment represented only about six-tenths of one percent of the original start-up capital. Failure to recognize both the similarities and differences between laboratory and plant operations is the foremost cause of difficulty encountered in designing a laboratory. The

The mineral industries have a continuing need for market forecasting and analysis for a variety of purposes, among which are organization and control of the sales effort, financial and corporate planning, and evaluation of the anticipated revenue from investment in proposed projects. For anything beyond the simplest extrapolation, some kind of economic reasoning or analysis is called for, which may or may not be incorporated into a formal or quantitative model. The principles described here apply to most of the commercially significant minerals and metals. The examples are drawn largely from the copper market, as it is the one with which I have the most practical experience. Practical forecasting is the process of analysis and synthesis from three categories of knowledge: facts and statistics, theory, and practical knowledge and informed opinion. Although many attempts have been made to build forecasts on only one of these three pillars, none has been successful as an operating procedure because of the lack of balance. There are no facts about the future-only about the present and the past. Facts can illuminate the future, but the future can be described only in terms of probability or more or less likely states of affairs-not as a continuous extension of the past and present. Likewise, theory, although useful as an organizing discipline and for providing a methodology of analysis, is inadequate for the complexities of reality. This is especially so when there is feedback between plans and forecasts to produce a new outcome and when there are significant elements of unpredictable free will, such as presidential jawboning or foreign policy considerations. Such elements are difficult to accommodate in neat theories, although they must certainly be reflected in the forecasts. Pure opinion frequently suffers from both a lack of-disciplined reasoning and the presence of biases or self-interest. While the future is unknown, it tends to cast its shadow before it; hence, forecasting is the art and science of positioning oneself so that the shadow becomes visible to the forecaster.

Recent scientific studies by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) presented the worst-case explosion pressures that can develop if a methane-air mixture of a certain composition and dimension accumulates and ignites within a sealed area of a mine. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued its final rule on sealing of abandoned areas which considers potential explosion pressures and the risk of achieving the necessary conditions. The new MSHA seals regulation has increased the pressure design criteria an order of magnitude beyond the old standard of 140 kPa (20 psi) to 800 kPa (120 psi). However, there still are major knowledge gaps pertaining to seals and sealed areas including: (1) the composition of the sealed area atmosphere and how it changes in time and space, (2) explosion pressures that might actually develop within sealed areas, (3) engineering procedures to follow when designing seals and seal installations, and (4) guidelines to manage the atmosphere within sealed areas with monitoring or inertization. NIOSH has initiated a seals research program with collaborators from Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS) in Australia, West Virginia University (WVU), the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and USACE. Highlights of progress so far include: (1) construction of a gas explosion tube at Lake Lynn Laboratory for studying large methane-air explosions, (2) computer simulation of the fluid dynamics of high pressure methane-air explosions, (3) development of seal analysis methods considering construction materials, reinforcement and the seal foundation, and (4) development and testing of innovative seal designs that utilize inexpensive, readily-available rock rubble to resist high explosion pressures. NIOSH researchers aim to provide sound engineering guidelines to better address the new MSHA seal regulations. The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district is located in northern Chile about 45 kilometers northeast of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Disseminated and veinlet copper and copper-iron sulfides containing economically significant silver values are hosted by andesitic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks of probable Jurassic age (Chavez, 1983). Field, mineralogical, textural and lithochemical evidence show that three major alteration types may be recognized within the district: (1) district-wide sodium metasomatism, manifested as albitization of feldspars and development of albite veinlets and pore-fillings, (2) local to widespread, incipient to intense addition (chloritization) or removal (bleaching) of magnesium and iron and (3) local to widespread, moderate to intense hematitization, usually spatially associated with bornite-digenite-covellite (as specularite) or digenite-covellite-chalcocite (as red hematite staining with or without specularite) mineralization. Carbonatization, occurring as veins, veinlets, vesicle fillings and irregular patches of calcite, varies in magnitude of development but is widespread. Sericitization of feldspars and groundmass is only locally intense yet is generally present as incipient alteration throughout the district. The district-wide albitization of the Mantos Blancos volcanic sequence has altered what were originally more potassic and calcic, less sodic, rocks to what are now more properly referred to as keratophyres (Battey, 1955; Gilluly, 1935, Hughes, 1975). The petrographic and lithochemical characteristics of the three major alteration types noted above are summarized below.

A requirement for geological controls during orebody modeling results from the recognition of heterogeneous geological characteristics and/or abrupt variations in orebody geometries. While purely statistical methods are often sufficient for modeling uniform homogeneous deposits, and the only recourse for many that are extremely complex, geological interpretations can be extremely valuable as controls during the modeling process. The advent of relatively inexpensive, sophisticated graphical computer hardware and software has focused considerable attention on the three dimensional visualization capabilities now available to the mining industry. Orebody geometries can be easily imported into many systems as wireframe or solid models, rendered with shading and color, rotated in space, exploded into composite parts, zoomed into and otherwise displayed to awe any audience. The requirements for an initially meaningful, accurate, geological interpretation are sometimes lost when the focus is on an apparently complex, highly resolved end product. Details of the initial data and sensitivities of modeling assumptions are not always sufficiently scrutinized. Software capabilities have extended the geopoetic license into three dimensions. The new tools, while greatly facilitating model construction and rendering, have done little to expedite basic data preparation and analysis. This paper attempts to briefly summarize the purpose and method of the construction of geological controls. The examples selected are from wire­framing and block modeling; application software processes commonly used in the mining industry today.

Zoning is the legal means by which land use can be controlled. Although zoning laws have historically been quick to prevent quarrying, one is hard pressed to find zoning ordinances which specifically state that land should be used (or held in reserve) for quarrying and prevent other uses such as recreation, housing, etc. This situation is especially true when the mineral to be quarried has a low intrinsic value such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The chance of a gold mine surviving urban sprawl is probably considerably greater than that of a sand and gravel pit, even though it is possible that the dollar value of the sand and gravel' would exceed that of the gold mine. The research reported herein was concerned with two major topics: to delineate the real costs associated with the non-protection of our construction aggregate resources (growth minerals) and to develop a computer simulation model which would aid planners in making economically sound decisions. This paper describes the problems faced by the mineral aggregate industry and discusses the role of computer simulation in planning problems. It briefly describes a simulation model which has been developed and previously reported12 and discusses the results of a pilot study conducted on the Tri-City area (Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, New York). 3

This paper is primarily a report on the process of using oolitic aragonite, as received from Marconi& Ocean Industries, Ltd. without further processing, for a major portion of the raw feed to a rotary kiln producing cement clinker. Oolitic aragonite is a high purity calcium carbonate material, dust free, with the appearance of a course, white sand. It is farmed when under the right conditions of temperature ocean currents, and ocean floor topography. The calcium carbonate will precipitate into small spherical particles on the ocean floor. These oceanic conditions are correct to cause precipitation of the calcium carbonate near Ocean Cay in the Bahama Island chain. The present growing deposit near Ocean Cay is in the billions of tons and is mined by a relatively shallow-operation hydraulic dredge. The aragonite thus formed is en orthorhombic crystaline form of calcium carbonate with a specific gravity of approximately 2.9. At a temperature of 505°C. (940F), the aragonite converts to the hexagonal crystal of calcite with a specific gravity of 2.6 to 2.7. This change in specific gravity weakens the structure of the particles but the individual pieces are still fairly hard. When the material is then calcined at 900°C (1650°F), the particles retain their shape but become soft and will break up under finger pressure.

Two methods are developed whereby; (1) mineralogic data can be arranged in order of typicality, and (2) mineralogic data external to a model can be compared with the model and the degrees of association computed. Thirty arbitrarily selected base metal mining districts in the conterminous United States were classified as copper, lead, or zinc districts on the basis of tonnage of the major base metal produced. For each of the copper, lead, and zinc districts binary-occurrence distributions were compiled for primary (unoxidized) and secondary (oxidized) minerals. Primary and secondary minerals were then arranged in order of decreasing typicality. Model copper districts are most typified by primary chalcopyrite, pyrite, and secondary malachite. Model lead districts are most typified by primary galena, quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, and secondary anglesite and cerargyrite. Model zinc districts are most typified by primary sphalerite, galena, pyrite, quartz, and secondary smithsonite and cerus-site. The Park City district was removed from the model and its primary and secondary mineralogy was compared with the model copper, lead, and zinc districts. The primary mineralogy of the Park City district is about equally associated with the model copper and lead districts, but the secondary mineralogy is much more akin to the model copper districts. Thus, with respect to the model data, the geochemical target presented by the Park City district resembles a copper district more closely than a lead district.

The forces of nature have concentrated sand at various geographical locations that are being mined and processed for a large variety of industrial uses. While most operations serve a number of industries, this paper deals only with the foundry requirements. The forces that have decomposed a source rock, transported this material and redeposited it, have created two general types of sand. These types are classified as the (1) Lake and Bank Sands and (2) Silica Sands. The Lake and Bank sands will contain 92 to 94% Sio2 while silica sands are in excess of 98.5% Si02 and most of the producers wash these sands to up grade their products to 99.5% or better. Included in the Lake and Bank sand would be the river sands that are used primarily for construction purposes. The Foundry Industry is broken down into three types of castings : 1. Grey Iron Foundries The grey iron castings largest market is the automotive industry in Ohio, Northern Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. These castings are poured at temperatures ranging from 2400° to 2700°F. The Silica Sands or the Lake and Bank Sands will satisfy the requirements of the grey iron castings. There are 2 ½ to three million tons per year shipped from the state of Michigan far grey iron castings by the Lake and Bank Sand Producers.

The Zabirah bauxite is a Cretaceous paleolaterite exposed by postTertiary uplift and erosion of the Phanerozoic sequence. The laterite profile, which is preserved in situ, occupies a prominent angular unconformity over a sequence of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones ranging from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous in age, and is overlain by a Late Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate package. The profile is known to be preserved over an area of 250 sq km and at depths below the present surface of up to 80 m. The bauxite layer is hard, compact and predominantly pisolitic, with a variety of subordinate, superimposed textures resulting from post-formation alteration. The bauxite minerals are boehmite and gibbsite. Boehmite generally predominates, and the boehmite:gibbsite ratio averages 2:1, with a marked tendency for the proportion of boehmite to increase down the profile. Kaolinite, a major constituent of the profile, is concentrated in two zones, one above and one below the pisolitic bauxite layer. Iron content is variable and bears a direct relationship to parent-rock lithology. Genesis and preservation of the bauxite are due to the favourable coincidence of a number of geological controls of which the most significant are the local structural and sedimentary regimes, the lithology and chemistry of the parent rocks, and the Cretaceous paleogeography of the region.

This chapter is concerned with the construction of the dynamic component of belt haulage systems. The dynamic system includes the belt line and tailpiece extension and retraction movements in a production system where mine management is continually placing the belt in the most effective operating position. Correct installation of the belt and tailpiece during an extension is very important for many performance reasons. Two of the most important reasons are to eliminate spillage and safely operate the belt line. This chapter is divided into three major discussions. The first discussion looks at analyzing the parameters of effective belt line construction. This includes a review of the parameters and management tools needed for proper scheduling of a move-up. The second major discussion topic centers on efficient procedures for a belt line extension. Topics such as site preparation, tailpiece breakdown and setup, stringing the belt line and structure, plus operating and maintenance tasks needed after the belt line is installed and running, are covered. The third discussion presents a list of conveyor and conveyor component manufacturers who provide services and products to the coal mining industry. Again, any discussion on underground haulage systems must generalize much of the site specific design approaches to be practical. This text will mention, where applicable, some of the alternatives available to construction engineers in designing belt line systems.

INTRODUCTION The basic premise of the ideas presented in this paper are as follows: Engineers believe that "theoretically" it will work. Operators ask what they must do to make it work. And, people can screw it up. r Today the challenges conf onted during the engineering, startup and operation of mines are becoming more complex. As mining and processing professionals, we are called upon to trav­el all over the world, are subjected to a wide variety of climates and must deal with a numerous cultures and people. Historically, for the majority of the people working in the mining industry, the primary challenges related to projects have focused on the differing perspectives of the disciplines involved. For example, geologists focus on resources and reserves, mining engineers relate to tons or tonnes, metallurgists count ounces or pounds or kilograms of product, mechanics emphasize availabil­ity, human resources personnel deal with absentee rates and turnover and accountants watch the bottom line ($$'s). As the world has become "smaller" and the mining industry has become more globalized, the puzzle is becoming increasingly difficult. Even the most experienced in the crowd of mining profes­sionals are oftentimes surprised by the types of problems that are encountered. Try as we may, we cannot anticipate the complex­ity of dealing with the human side of an operation.

Certain health and safety hazards occur entirely unexpectedly in some subterranean excavations. Although ground support is not the subject of this paper, ground failure can result in large and often uncontrolled flow of fluids into an excavation. Even when there is no ground failure, the disturbance of nature's equilibrium between rock or unconsolidated alluvium or rubble and the contained fluids poses severe problems to a well planned operation. Optimum conditions for safe operation cannot be the sole criterion for site selection. Some mineral deposits form in zones of structural weakness, others form where hydrothermal alteration substantially weakens the enclosing rock, and tabular deposits such as coal and evaporites inevitably undermine large areas. Excavation to acquire mineral values cannot be relocated. The same is often true for tunnels driven to connect distant points by the most direct route. Rivers and mountains cannot he avoided, and the cost of lengthening a tunnel--by even a fraction of a percent--must be strongly justified. No responsible engineer will knowingly select a dangerous route for excavation, but to what extent do engineers attempt to assess the health and safety hazards that may be reasonably expected? How, specifically, can methane explosions, water and sand flooding, dangerous dusts, toxic gases, thermal shock and radar poisoning be eliminated or minimized through systematic advance planning?

The dissolution of gold in cyanide_ leaching has been we11 published with the genera1 acceptance that gold is oxidised by oxygen and stabilized by complexation with cyanide [1]. The dissolution of gold is essentially an electrochemical process. The rate of the anodic gold dissolution is controlled by the cyanide concentration. - (2) While the cathode reduction of oxygen is controlled by dissolved oxygen concentration - (3) There are a number of factors influencing the concentration of oxygen, and if 1owered substanth.lly will effect the efficiency of the leaching plant. These include: "' salinity "' temperature "'partial pressure "'oxygen consumption rate The use of pure oxygen for· cyanidation is only beneficial if oxygen is rate limiting, Conversely a slurry saturated with air (typically 5 - 8 ppm) may not be enough for maximum leach rate. The diagram below shows the maximum dissolved oxygen levels obtainable with pure oxygen and air. DISSOLVED OXYGEN (MAXIMUM) IN WATER At steady state, the rate of the cathodic reaction must equal the rate of the anodic reaction. Thus the rate of gold dissolution is dependent on both the· cyanide and oxygen concentrations. - (4) Using an average of Do/Den =· 1.5 [2] (where Do and Den are the oxygen and cyanide diffusion coefficients) the table below illustrates the maximum effective oxygen concentrations for given cyanide levels in clean water [3].

R. Michael Craig Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground-water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hunder pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. For example, water levels at elevations of 455 m (1500 ft) or more above the top of the Westwater Canyon member of Reply by H.C. Juvkam-Wold In general, Mr. Craig's comments are useful and accurate regarding the potential benefits of aquifer depressurization. However, two of his points require further explanation since they may lead to a misunderstanding of my paper and its predictions. These refer to his comments regarding failure to account for storativity and to non-artesian conditions. Equation 5 is indeed Darcy's steady state equation. However, as a careful review of the appendix in this paper will reveal, I have used this equation to represent semi-steady state conditions. Precious gold and silver markets support substantial activity in the search for and development of improved and unconventional ore and tailing processing methods. The need for such methods 1s strengthened by consideration of increasingly low grade and refractory ores and old tailing reserves. As background for this review of new and unconventional precious metal processing, recent USBM data (1981) show annual world gold production of about 40.8 million troy ounces. In the U.S. about half the 2.8 million ounce consumption was used for jewelry and the arts, 39 percent for industry, and 8 percent for dental purposes. World silver production in 1981 was about 365 million ounces. Domestic usage the same year was about 117 million ounces. More than $ was used for photography and 30 percent for electrical and electronics. By process, about 1 percent of U.S. production of gold came from amalgamation, 66 percent from cyanidation, 31 percent from smelting ores and concentrates, and 2 percent from placers. Evidently the search for innovative and unconventional precious metal processes must include gravity concentration, froth flotation, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical methods. Although smelting processes are equally important, they largely comprise nonferrous metal technology, and are not discussed here.
