INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. "As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for mine designs to better reflect site-specific conditions, measurements, and observations with respect to ground control safety and stability. During the past 20 years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed, validated and distributed a number of free software packages (ALPS, ARMPS, AMSS, ARBS, etc.) specifically aimed at providing the industry with ground control design tools for the evaluation of underground stability in coal mines. While these programs were initially developed as stand-alone software packages where all data reside on an individual or workgroup computer, modern day web applications have begun to migrate toward a “multiple-tier” architecture, allowing multiple users to access an application by means of an Internet connection.This article introduces a new Web-based platform for ground control software applications, webGroundControl (webGC). webGC provides users with a platform through which one can access NIOSH and other ground control design software utilizing a Webbased, multiple-tier architecture. This provides users with easy access to ground control designs, the ability to perform on-demand calculations, as well as increase online collaboration between operational personnel and engineers through a web server. The basic framework and, more specifically, the user-interface of webGC are defined and outlined within this paper. It is expected that the mining industry will rapidly embrace this new product and webGroundControl will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. Platform architectureAs Web-based computing technologies continue to advance and cloud computing gains momentum, web-based platforms for software applications are growing in popularity across all industries due to ease of product accessibility and distribution as well as data security. With the expansion of Internet connectivity on the surface and underground, there is an industry need to develop Internet-based applications for mine and ground control design (Barczak et al., 2016). Cloud-based products are already available for many industries and are slowly being developed for the mining and geotechnical industry. A notable example is the drillysis package, which is a cloud-based borehole logging database (Geosysta, 2017) or the Dynonobel package for on the fly blasting calculations (Dyno Nobel, 2013)."

"Twin Creeks is a gold mining complex that is part of Newmont’s Nevada operations. The mining complex is composed of two openpits, Mega and Vista, external ore sources and a set of existing stockpiles, all of which provide ore for an autoclave, an oxide mill and a heap leach. Mega pit provides sulfide ore for the autoclave, whereas Vista pit provides oxide ore for the oxide mill and the heap leach. Both pits operate the same mining equipment and their extraction sequence must, therefore, be optimized simultaneously. Stringent blending requirements are associated with the operation of the autoclave for the sulfide ore. Strategic blending optimization on a large scale has brought significant value to the operation by increasing synergies. This paper presents the implementation of a stochastic optimization framework for the long-term production planning at Twin Creeks that simultaneously optimizes mining, stockpiling, blending and processing decision variables. The uncertainty and variability associated with the different sources of material are incorporated in the optimization model by means of stochastic simulations. The stochastic solution generated shows substantial benefits by increasing forecasted recoverable gold, leading to increased cash flows, while reducing the risk of not achieving forecasts by increasing the probabilities of meeting production and blending targets.IntroductionMine operations consist of multiple components such as mineral deposits, stockpiles, external sources, mills and autoclaves. These components represent a mineral value chain, also known in the literature as a mining complex (Montiel and Dimitrakopoulos 2015; Goodfellow and Dimitrakopoulos 2016). The material extracted from the mines flows through the different components and is transformed into sellable products. This flow of material in a mineral value chain involves complex, nonlinear transformations that render the use of industry-standard optimizers difficult. Furthermore, the optimization of a mining complex can be formulated as a mixed-integer, nonlinear optimization program with millions of integer variables representing mining, blending, stockpiling and processing decisions, prohibiting the use of conventional nonlinear optimization approaches. Previous methods that consider the joint optimization of multiple components of the mineral value chain are available (Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman, 1999; Chanda, 2005; Stone et al., 2005; Wooller, 2005; Whittle, 2007, 2010; Bodon et al., 2010). Although these methods add value by increasing the synergy between the different components of the mining complex, they rely on simplifying assumptions that constrain their efficacy, while ignoring a most critical aspect. The latter aspect includes the geological uncertainty and actual variability of the materials in the mineral deposits mined and are supplied to the related mineral value chain, similarly to conventional life-of-mine planning methods used for individual mines (Dimitrakopoulos, Farrelly and Godoy, 2002; Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos, 2011; Spleit and Dimitrakopoulos, 2017). Additional simplifying assumptions may include: the consideration of a limited number of components, the combination of different methods, the aggregation of variables, fixed production schedules the definition of policies prior to optimization, such as cutoff- grade definition or destination of mining blocks, the linearization of nonlinear transformation functions and/or the disregard for the uncertainty of several critical parameters (Whittle, 2007). The simultaneous optimization of multiple components of a mining complex was introduced by Newmont. Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman (1999) implemented a mixed-integer programming formulation to optimize Newmont’s Nevada operations. Experiments have been carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064 m x l.5 m bubble column equipped with a Mott porous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and air flow rate are presented and discussed.

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental program conducted to characterize the moment-rotation behavior of skewed flat radial joints from large diameter (45 ft) tunnel lining. Both positive and negative joint moment-rotation behaviors were measured experimentally using two-segment joint combination assemblies. The results are compared to closed form methodologies used by designers, e.g., the Janssen method. The differences in observed and model behavior are discussed within the context of design practice.

A hybrid boundary element-finite element model was formulated to model roof bolt reinforcement of the roof strata with bedding planes. This model was used to analyze the stress distribution around a rectangular opening with variables such as opening width-height ratio, number of bolts installed, number/location of bedding planes, in-situ stresses, etc. The most critical areas are identified and the number and length of roof bolt required are then determined. Two case examples are illustrated.

The effect of reaction conditions on the desulphurization of oil sand coke residues has been studied. The variables investigated were temperature, reaction time, heat transfer resistance, and mode of caustic soda addition. The results obtained show that oil sand coke desulphurization increases with temperature, reaction time, and heat transfer rate. In an oxidative environment, coke combustion during molten caustic leaching (MCL) commences at temperatures above 500°C. The mode of caustic addition has no effect on coke desulphurization.

The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

A unique telemetry system was developed to monitor potentially unstable natural slopes above a residential area. Continuous interpretation of data transmitted from remote movement-sensitive devices and immediate communication of signficant changes to emergency personnel were made possible by a readily available "home" computer. This paper reports on recent modeling efforts to analyze the eastern U.S. steam coal market with a cross-sectional econometric as well as a quadratic programming approach. The background to coal modeling is examined first. The particular aspect of the steam coal market to be modeled are then presented and the corresponding coal model described. Both empirical results and rigorous mathematic pertubation analysis are presented. Conclusions are then drawn regarding potential modeling applications in the policy area.

Four different high density sludge-type processes, Cominco HDS, Geco HDS, Tetra HDS Process and the Staged- neutralization process were studied for their effectiveness in treating a low strength Zn-Fe rich acidic drainage solution. Each proms was run continuously for at least two weeks after obtaining steady state conditions. The final effluent quality, lime consumption, sludge density, settleability, filterability, viscosity, neutralization potential, metal leachability, operating and capital costs were measured and evaluated for each process.

The harmfulness and destructiveness of mine gas explosion is quite serious, which is the first of all kinds of coal mine disasters. Once the gas explosion occurs, it could instantly generate explosion shock waves, high temperature airflows, and disaster gases, which cause the destruction of underground ventilation structures, disruption of airflow direction in a mine ventilation network, and miners’ deaths by asphyxiation. As an important barrier to prevent the spread of accidents caused by the gas explosion, the safety and reliability of the mine seal affects the mine’s production and the health of workers. Due to the demands of coal mine production and transportation, a large number of longitudinal and horizontal roadway networks have been developed underground. There are not only many flat and straight roadways in the complex roadway network structure, but also a large number of different types of bifurcations and bends. Once a gas explosion occurs, the impact of the blast waves on the mine seal after passing through the complex path is difficult to determine. Therefore, this paper establishes a numerical model of bifurcated and cornered roadways and studies how the impact of gas explosion shock waves on the structure of sandwich mine seal after passing through different types of bifurcated and cornered roadways. The damage state of sandwich mine seal is analyzed. The researching finding could prevent and manage the spread of gas explosion disaster, and improve the disaster mitigation of mine explosion accident.

Rockburst is defined as a sudden and violent explosion of rock on the surface of a rock excavation. Rockburst has been regarded as the least understood and most feared hazard problem for underground rock excavations. Traditionally, rockbursts were classified into the strain, pillar, and fault-slip categories. However, rockbursts are also known to occur at stress levels well below the rock yield strength, in mines where the rock is far from brittle, or without the presence of geological discontinuities. A plausible explanation of rockbursts is buckling, which has been identified as one of the main mechanisms for rockbursts. It is observed that rockbursts are often induced by dynamic loadings (pulses) from adjacent blasting. Therefore, the present paper studies the effect of pulse shape and amplitude on pillar rockbursts induced by dynamic loadings from blasting using the method of numerical analysis. The governing equation of a pillar’s motion is set up and the mechanism of pillar rockbursts is investigated through a practical example. The results show that it is not the shape of a pulse but the impact energy to decide the occurrence of pillar rockbursts. If all other parameters remain the same, pillar rockbursts are more likely to occur when the pulse duration is longer. The parametric resonance and the perturbation of dynamic loadings are also found to play an important role in the occurrence of rockbursts. These insights would provide invaluable clues about the mechanism and for better control of pillar rockbursts.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and organic acids (citric, malic, tartaric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acid) on gold extraction from silicate ore. Use of amino acids to extract gold was preferred compared with organic acids due to the presence of carboxylic group and amine groups in amino acids. Among the assessed amino acids, aspartic acid and glutamic acid had higher capacities to extract gold due to their structures, which lacked aromatic rings and long side chains. Organic acids could also extract gold. In particular, oxalic and succinic acids had the greatest capacity to extract gold versus the other tested organic acids. Moreover, aspartic acid had a greater capacity to extract gold from ores than the same concentration of succinic acid. We confirmed the aspartic acid and succinic acid functional groups by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The findings revealed that aspartic acid had a greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid due to the presence of both amine and carboxylic groups (succinic acid contained only a carboxylic group). The optimal gold:aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6 and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35–42%of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. This can be used as an alternative to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore; it is non-toxic to human health and environmentally friendly.

Pyrite is one of the most common sulfide minerals on earth, which is usually grown with chalcopyrite and other sulfide minerals. In flotation practice, pyrite from different mines or different sections in a same mine may have different flotation behaviors. This is because the pyrite crystal contains lattice defect, including ionic vacancy and lattice impurity. The present work investigates the effects of three typical 3d transition metal (Co, Ni, and Fe) on the adsorption of CH3OCS2 −, OH−, and CN− on pyrite surface by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Calculated results show that Co impurity reduces the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite, while Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite. Co impurity has small influence on the adsorption of OH−, but Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies. Calculations on Mulliken charge population of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ indicate that the Mulliken charges of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ after OH− adsorption are more than those after CN− adsorption. This suggests that the ionic property of the M-OH- coordination bond is greater than that of M-CN- coordination bond, while covalent bonding of M-CN- coordination bond is greater than that of M-OH- coordination bond. The adsorption results are discussed based on coordination field theory (CFT).

Excavation of large rock caverns is a stepwise process. Whether one uses a heading and bench method or a multiple drift system, the use of excavation steps enables one to introduce the reinforcement, such as bolts or shotcrete, at the earliest possible stage. Knowing the spatial distribution and properties of rock materials and geological discontinuities, the cavern geometry and its reinforcement must be optimized. The finite element method of analysis is a powerful tool for such optimization. However, the models are only as good as their ability to account realistically for the physical attributes of the prototype and for the excavation sequence. They must include the following: - ability to model an incremental construction process. Thus requires the use of "Restart" procedures where displacements and stresses from a previous equilibrium are saved for the next step. - ability to model non-linear rock material behavior; in particular, the post-peak behavior of the rock which retains a residual strength when con-fined. The stability of many under-ground structures rests with the "broken" rock carrying significant loads. - ability to account for the non-linear behavior of geological discontinuities. These are two-fold. First, up to peak, non smooth rock joints will dilate. In a confined situation, dilation will increase joint strength by a consider-able amount (Obert, et al, Brady, 1971, Heuze,1978a), Then, beyond the peak, the joint also retains residual strength.
