In the 1990s, Cleaner Production (CP) approaches were successfully introduced to a number of industrial sectors in South Africa. Building on this success, the South African Water Research Commission has commissioned a 3-year study to investigate the use of CP and its related set of environmental assessment and management tools in the mining industry. A scoping study is being carried out on the current knowledge of CP approaches being used in the industry, as well as the proactive and preventative measures being undertaken. One of the significant findings of the scoping study is that distinct differences exist between the larger global companies and the smaller local companies. Being a water research project a key focus area of the project is to reduce the impacts related to mining on the South African water resources. Some of the significant water related threats identified include acid mine drainage, the shortage of the resource and the effects of inter-mine flow.

One of the most common errors uncovered while performing a reserve, or resource, audit is not in the geological modeling or grade problems due to poor sampling, prepartion or assaying. The error most commonly found is in tonnage or, more specifically, in the tonnage factor - that factor applied to volume to derive tonnage. Tonnage factors In the metric system, the tonnage factor is the density, or specific gravity. Specific gravity (Sp.g.) is defined by Dana (1947): • "The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density to that of water at 4° C (39.2° F). • "Density is the mass of the unit volume or weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water." When Sp.g. is multiplied by the metric volume it yields metric tonnes. In the English system, the tonnage factor is usually expressed in cubic feet per short ton (cu ft/st). When the volume in cubic feet is divided by cu ft/st, the resulting figure is in English short tons. Table 1 gives the cu ft/st factors equivalent to specific gravities from 1.6 Sp.g. to 5.8 Sp.g. The table is based on the following equation: cu ft/st = 0.9072 divided by Sp.g. times 0.02832 The blase attitude that most geologists have toward tonnage factors is echoed in the prevailing definitions of Reserves and Ore, as provided by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (S.C Form S-18), Canadian National Policy 2A and the SME Proposal for Reporting Terminology (SME February 1991). In each case, it is stated that "quantity" (SEC, SME), or "tonnage" (Can.2A), "is computed from dimensions revealed in...." etc. Unfortunately, "dimensions" do not directly yield tonnage. Dimensions must be factored by density to derive tonnage.

Introduction On June 20, 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published revised asbestos exposure standards for general industry and construction. The standards reflect OSHA's attempt to adequately control workplace exposures to minerals it considers carcinogenic - minerals capable of causing or contributing to cancer. These standards specifically identify asbestos as: chrysotile, an asbestiform serpentine mineral; and the amphibole minerals amosite, crocidolite, tremolite asbestos, actinolite asbestos, and anthophyllite asbestos. Each of these has a more common nonasbestos mineral analog that exists in nature in a crystalline, blocky shape rather than the hair-like or fibrous shape of asbestos. The mineralogical names for three of these nonasbestos minerals are unique: antigorite for chrysotile, cummingtonite-grunerite for amosite, and riebeckite for crocidolite. The other three nonasbestos analogs do not have unique mineralogical names. They are simply designated as actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite without the word asbestos following their names. The 1986 OSHA standards not only cover exposure to the six asbestos minerals, they also cover specifically the nonasbestos forms of actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite (AT&A). The new standards regulate these minerals exactly like asbestos (OSHA, 1986). The construction aggregate industry views this as a major problem because these nonasbestos minerals are common amphibole rock-forming minerals in the earth's crust. They exist in small quantities over large areas of the United States (Kuryvial et al., 1974). These minerals, unlike asbestos, are not mined for a specific commercial purpose. They are unavoidable components in much of the aggregate used for construction throughout the US. They are also common in the gangue material of metallic ores. There are areas of the US where amphibole-bearing bed¬rock is common. Not every rock mass in these areas contain amphiboles, however. It does mean, though, that amphiboles are physically compatible with many of the rocks in those areas. And given the correct geochemical conditions, they will be present primarily in the nonasbestiform variety. In addition, these amphiboles will probably exist in the natural drainage system, sand and gravel deposits, stream sediments, lake shores, valley basins, or ordinary beach sand within these areas. There has been little quantification of nonasbestiform AT&A in dusts and soils in the US. This is not surprising since these nonasbestiform minerals are not commercially valuable. However, an example of the pervasive nature of these minerals can be found in a 1981 Geological Society of America publication where about 0.7% tremolite-actinolite was found in the desert dust in and around Tempe, AZ (Pewe, 1981). Since OSHA standards treat these common nonasbestos minerals as carcinogens in the same way as asbestos, large natural areas in the US are implicitly being labeled as hazardous by OSHA. When a substance is identified as a carcinogen, another OSHA standard comes into play, the Hazard Communication standard. There are also right-to-know laws in 9 states that essentially duplicate this federal standard. These standards require that a product containing 0.1% or more of an OSHA-designated carcinogen be labeled as such (OSHA, 1983). This means that much of the stone and sand gravel products occurring naturally and mined in the US could be labeled a carcinogen when, in fact, they are not. The National Stone Association (NSA) and the domestic construction and mining industries believe that OSHA has seriously erred. The NSA has studied the health, mineralogical, technical, economic, and legal basis for OSHA's action. These studies concluded that there is no justification for the agency regulating nonasbestos minerals as if they were asbestos. Health issues The preamble to OSHA's 1986 asbestos standard states that evidence for asbestos-like health effects from exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of AT&A is inconclusive (OSHA, 1986). The fact is, not only are the data inconclusive, they are nonexistent. During 1986-1987, NSA's occupational health and epidemiology consultant, Environmental Health Associates (EHA), reviewed all available health studies related to AT&A. EHA found evidence that malignancies in both experimental animals and humans are associated with the asbestos forms of these minerals. No experimental or epidemiological evidence was found that indicated such pathogenic effects occur from exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of these minerals. There are relatively few scientific studies of the health effects of exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of AT&A. In the production of Pig Iron - Limestone, Coke and Iron Ore pellets are changed to the blast furnace and reacted at approximately 2,800 degrees F. The resultant products are molten iron and a molten slag - not unlike lava. The molten slag stream is channeled into open pits, cooled with water, crushed and sized for various industrial applications. The production of steel from pig iron in open hearth, B0P, BOF and electric furnaces results in somewhat similar slags: but since free lime is normally the flux, the resultant slags are not satisfactory for use in cement pastes. When exposed to water, the lime slakes, expands by 250% and ruptures the concrete. Thus, the slag discussed first is Blast Furnace Slag composed of 30 to 40% Silica (SiO2) Alumina (AL202) 7 to 16% Lime (CaO) 32 to 45% and Magnesia (MgO) 5 to 15%. The oxides do not exist as free oxides but rather as silicates and alumino silicates which are chemicall inert. Since transportation costs limit the area of use, blast furnace slag can only be found in concrete products produced within 60 to 100 miles of a blast furnace operation. Even within these areas where slag is in heavy supply, quite often the use of slag is minimal for concrete aggregate and the major outlet is road base.

In this work, a comprehensive field study was carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling was conducted to envisage dust concentration due to existing and closed mines in the region. The air quality modeling exercise predicted that particulate-matter levels of PM10 and PM2.5 might increase in the ranges of 3.2 to 23.1 and 2.1 to 8.9 μg/m3, respectively, due to mining activities when some of the closed mines will be operated in the region without controlled emission. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 at the selected receptor locations were in the ranges of 86.39 to 194.89 and 34.82 to 99.55 μg/m3, respectively. Adequate measures were suggested to control air pollution from mining activities, and an intelligent dry fog system was designed to suppress dust emission efficiently from mineral processing plants and opencast mines. The developed system has special features for facilitating eco-friendly mining.

The Shinkansen of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) presently in operation between Tokyo and Hakata, approximately 1,000 km, was constructed at three stages: between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka opening in 1964, Shin-Osaka and Okayama in 1972 and Okayama and Hakata in 1975. Works on the extension of 400 km from Okayama to Hakata were launched in March 1970. As construction of the undersea Shin-Kanmon Tunnel on the extension was the toughest task, requiring many, many months, the work was undertaken earlier than any other works on the extension. It was brought to its completion in June 1974 at the cost of about 22, 000 million yen. The Shin-Kanmon Tunnel is the third undersea tunnel constructed to connect the main island of Honshu and Kyushu across the Kanmon Straits. (Table 1)

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). Barring major discoveries, South African gold production is expected to peak in 1987 and begin to decline again throughout the 1990s. The rate of decline is ex-

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have gained worldwide acceptance in the construction field and are being employed in ever increasing numbers to drive underground transit lines, drainage systems, etc. However, TBM utilization in the mining industry, and more specifically coal mining, has been very limited. This paper reviews past and present applications of TBMs to coal mining and examines the needs of the industry in an attempt to offer some insight as to what a TBM system must provide if the excavation potential demonstrated in civil works projects is to be realized in coal operations. EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE Germany The Germans recognized long ago the potential of mechanized drivage for coal mine entry development. Early in the 1960's experimental runs were made with a full-face Wohlmyer roadheader at the Westerholt Mine and trials were conducted on a roller bit armed full-face Bade roadheader. But because of problems with penetrating the various carboniferous strata occurring in changing sequence and hardness, these first attempts were soon terminated. After viewing later successes in the construction industry with improved TBMs, new attempts were initiated by the German mining industry in 1971 to mechanize drivage of their development entries. Four TBMs of two different types were placed in operation.

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. Introduction In 1986, the US economy passed the $4 trillion mark. However, the value of domestically processed materials of mineral origin fell slightly to $240 billion. The value of metals produced from US ores was unchanged at $5.6 billion, as was recycled scrap at $4 billion, while the value of industrial minerals rose slightly to $17.9 billion. Consumer demand strongly affects mining and the US economy is relatively saturated with longlived products. Moreover, in recent years there has been a steady increase in consumer, mortgage, and federal debt, inhibiting new purchases of goods. Motor vehicles and housing are major traditional markets for mineral materials. However, the 242 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 92 million dwelling units. In 1986, domestic motor vehicle production fell 3%, to 11.3 million units, while new housing starts rose slightly to 1.8 million units. Nearly all mineral commodities move relatively freely in world trade. As detailed in Figs. 1 and 2, in the last three decades world production of major mineral materials has greatly increased. At present, substantial excess productive capacity exists not only in the US but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering increasing competition from other sources, along with increasing competition from newer, engineered materials. For example, US production of plas¬tics has risen from 900 kt (1 million st) in 1950 to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1986 - on a volume basis significantly greater than steel. Plastics, too, are mineral-based materials, some 7% of petrochemicals going to their manufacture. 1986 saw increased calls for protection. But President Reagan, in his 1987 State of the Union Message and Economic Report to the Congress, reaffirmed adherence to a policy of free and fair trade. However, he stressed the need for increased efforts to open foreign markets to US exports and to increase competitiveness of US industry US imports of mineral-based minerals in 1986 were valued at $40 billion and exports at $24 billion. Strategic minerals As detailed in Fig. 3, imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important materials, including many classified as "strategic and critical." There were no changes in stockpile policy during the year. Congress debated the President's 1985 proposals to reduce stocks of World War II-type materials and to focus more on high technology materials needed for the cutting edge of future military material. But no final action resulted. However, Congressional concern about apartheid in South Africa did result in increasing pressure to limit imports of South African minerals. Meanwhile, the National Critical Materials Council in the Executive Office of the President intensified its efforts to be better able to advise the President. The 1989 Annual Meeting and Exhibit of SME in Las Vegas, NV, February 27 - March 2, 1989, was the largest ever, drawing more than 4000 regis¬trants and 240 exhibit booths. Technical sessions included presentation of nearly 500 papers, including symposia on Biotechnology in Minerals and Metals Processing, Surplus Capacity in the International Metals Industry, and APCOM `89 - the 21st International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. Technical sessions covered the gamut of minerals industry interests; however, the proximity of the meeting to recently surging gold development in Nevada drew special attention to gold operating practices. Several of the papers on gold processing are reviewed below. To keep pace with the strong world- wide interest in gold development, SME has scheduled three additional upcoming programs that will focus specifically on gold: World Gold '89 - Gold Forum on Technology and Practices will be held November 5 - 8, 1989 in Reno, NV, as a joint meeting and exhibit between SME and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Technical sessions will encompass a full program of papers covering geology and exploration, mining, and mineral and metallurgical processing. Cooperating sponsors for this meeting include the Canadian Mineral Processors Division of CIM, The Institute of Metals, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India, and The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Gold '90 - Salt Lake City, UT, February 26 - March 1, 1990, will be a symposium held in conjunction with the 1990 SME Annual Meeting. Current research on the processing of refractory gold ores will generate innovative papers on process mineralogy at this symposium, with special emphasis on gold with pyrite and gold with carbon. Other sessions are planned for gold exploration and mining, gold metallurgy, gold plant design and practice, and gold in scams. Advances in Gold and Silver Processing Conference, October 1 - 3, 1990 will be held in Reno, NV. Preliminary planning calls for technical sessions on heap leaching practice, refractory ore processing, non-traditional lixiviants, bioleaching, metal recovery from solution, and the environmental aspects of processing operations. PLANT DESIGN, OPERATION Technical sessions organized by the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division of SME at this year's meeting in Las Vegas covered a wide range of gold operating practices. Eight papers relating to gold plant design, operation, and equipment are summarized here. Preprints of these papers are available by writing to Publications Sales, PO Box 625002, Littleton, CO 80162-5002 ($2.50 per paper for AIME members, $4 for nonmembers). Continuous elution process A. M. Stone, of Bechtel Australia Pty. Ltd., described the "Development of the Continuous Elution Process for Extraction of Gold from Carbon" (pre-print 89-75). Developed by Bechtel Pacific Corp. for Ok Tedi Mining Ltd., the Continuous Elution Process uses the same reagents as batch processes for elution of gold from carbon, while yielding significant savings in stripping vessel size and energy consumed in comparison with equivalent batch processes. The process is also simpler to operate than batch processes. Other advantages include reduced maintenance costs, higher average eluate grade, and near steady final eluate grade. Pilot testing for the Continuous Elution Process was conducted at Western Mining's Kambalda gold plant beginning in December 1982. The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 in New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be widespread through much of the Tasman fold belts of Eastern Australia. Production is estimated to be some 500,000 carats from several small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration, though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond content has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia during the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives. Of those, 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe, however, the 1200 Ma high-grade Argyle lamproite and associated nearby alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable. Its current annual production is 40 million carats valued at about US$400 million. Production from the open pit will be sustainable until at least 2003.

INTRODUCTION As illustrated in Figure 1, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) rapid transit system (METRO) ultimately will comprise 100 miles of line divided among 10 routes. At this time about 46 per cent of the system is under construction or in operation. Planning and design of an additional 38 per cent is at an advanced stage. Of the 84 miles under development or construction, about 10.4 miles consist of soft ground tunnels, and another 1600 feet of mixed face. This paper describes most of the factors considered by designers in setting grades for such tunnels. It is hoped the paper will be a useful guide to planners and engineers in developing similar transit systems. The problems faced in Washington, including those related to geology, are not so unique that the solutions cannot be applied to other systems. The paper also may be of interest to contractors who have not perceived the logic behind the selection of a particular vertical alignment. An attempt is made to explain the background constraints that make most tunnel alignments a compromise among competing alternatives. Readers might assume that the choice of alignments is largely controlled by geological conditions. In fact this is merely one of many factors to be considered.

INTRODUCTION Mica Dam is located on the Columbia River just downstream of the "big bend" of the Columbia, where it leaves the Rocky Mountain Trench and begins to flow southwards, approximately 85 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. (Fig.l). The dam was built as one of three Columbia River Treaty dams in British Columbia which regulate the flow of the river and provide flood control downstream in Washington and Oregon. In addition, the three Canadian dams make possible greatly increased power generation at existing power plants in the United States and further development along the Columbia and its tributaries in British Columbia. History Mica Dam, constructed during the period 1967 to 1973, is a zoned earthfill embankment 650 feet high, which has 12,000,000 acre feet of live storage and an available head of 550 feet. Power intakes which would serve either a six-unit surface or underground plant were incorporated into the design and construction of the right abutment of the dam (Fig. 2). Prior to 1971 alternative 2500 MW capacity surface and underground powerplant arrangements were studied. Cost estimates for the two alternatives were the same within the limits of estimating procedures. However, it was believed there was a certain continuing risk in locating a surface plant at the toe of a steep canyon wall. Many concepts concerning equipment selection, performance prediction, and evaluation of support requirements for tunnel construction in soil or hard rock tunnels cannot be extrapolated directly for application in soft rock (compressive strength between 1.0 and 35.0 MPa). Case histories for small diameter (less than 3.5 m) tunnels in Austin, Texas, are analyzed to gain insight into particular problems encountered during tunnel excavation in weak sedimentary rock, and the performance of different excavation systems are compared.

US mine production of iron ore in 1984 showed some improvements compared to 1983. But reduced demand from the iron and steel industry caused temporary shutdowns of many iron ore mines and pelletizing plants. US raw steel production in 1984 was slightly above 1983, but still at a depressed level. Production was 83 Mt (92 million st), compared with 77 Mt (85 million st) in 1983 and 68 Mt (75 million st) in 1982. Two major production trends continued in 1984. They were the increased production from electric furnaces and the growing use of continuous casters. Electric furnace production included 33.2% of the steel poured in 1984, compared with 31.5% in 1983. Continuous casting was used for 39% of 1984 steel production, compared with 32.1% in 1983. Statistical Process Control Statistical Process Control (SPC) has taken on new proportions in the iron ore and steelmaking industries within the last year. This mathematical technique is used to monitor, control, evaluate, and analyze a manufacturing process. The technique charts variability of important quality parameters. Training and adaptation of SPC techniaues for process control have been initiated at Inland, Steel's Minorca, Pickands-Mather's Hibtac, Cleveland-Cliff's Empire and Sherman operations, and at Reserve Mining. One of these operations has requested its bentonite supplier provide SPC charts on quality specifications. Some of the steelmaking operations (Inland Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Dofasco, LTV Steel, National Steel, Stelco, Weirton Steel, and Wheeling-Pittsburgh) have set up SPC programs within their operations. And they also have insisted that some of their suppliers use SPC. Plant Shutdowns The permanent closure of Stelco's Griffith mine at Red Lake, Ontario, has been delayed by one year. This gives employees more time to adjust. The mine is now set to close in April 1986, instead of April 1985. Sidbec (Canadian government) and its other partners (including British Steel Corp., Quebec Cartier Mining, and US Steel) closed its iron mining operations at Gagnon, Quebec. The pellet plant has been leased to Quebec Cartier. New Iron Ore Operations The massive Carajas iron ore project in Brazil is scheduled to come onstream in Jan. 1986. It is to achieve full-scale commercial shipments by July of that year. The 66% iron crude ore requires only crushing and screening before shipment. The product consists of 83% sinter feed and 17% coarse ore. Annual production capacity will be 32 Mt (35 million st) when the project is completed. Principal customer for the ore is Nippon Carajas Iron Ore Co., a consortium of Japanese steel mills. The Arab Iron & Steel Co. (AISCO) has started up a $US300 million, 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) iron ore pelletizing plant built by Kobe Steel Ltd., at Al Hidd-hide in Bahrain. By 1986, this grate-kiln-cooler plant will supply high quality iron ore pellets to feed direct reduction plants in the immediate Gulf area and Far East markets. Iron ore supplied from Brazil, Peru, India, and Mauritania provides the feed to the pellet plant. Hydrated lime (2%) is used as a burden.

A new comprehensive insitu instrumentation technique named this RCC Method has been developed for rapid assessment and improvement of the structural stability of underground openings. When applied to tunnel construction, the degree of present and prospective safety of underground openings can be determined in quantitative terms within 10 to 20 minutes of microcreep observation. When applied to mining, roofs and floors can be stabilized by controlling the stress conditions. This stress control method has eliminated the need for intensive roof bolting and extensive floor renewal in all cases where it was applied. Use of this technique is illustrated by field examples from the Seikan Undersea Tunnel of Japan and deep potash mining in Canada. NEW INSTRUMENTATION TECHNIQUE: THE RCC METHOD Failure problems in underground excavation usually arise in weak non-elastic grounds where conventional rock mechanics theories of elasticity are not only useless but also misleading. Presently, discontinuity planes in the ground are being considered a factor in assessing these failure problems, and while this development is interesting academically, it is not of much use in actual excavation work, where it is nearly impossible to identify and quantize all existing planes of discontinuity. Even if such an extraordinary task could be accomplished at an underground excavation site, effective use of the data would be difficult and impractical for rapid excavation work, with the possible exception of rare cases of ideally elastic ground.

The difficulties encountered while sinking deep shafts for Potash Mines in southern Saskatchewan have been the subject of several papers in the past. Geological and hydrological conditions of the strata overlying the potash deposits require special techniques for ground and water control during shaft sinking. The easily soluble potash ore requires the lining of these shafts to be virtually watertight to assure long term and safe operation. This paper describes the construction of the most recently completed potash shaft for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. The shaft was designed and constructed by Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd. and it is located near Lanigan, approximately 110 km east of Saskatoon.

Heavy (exceeding 35 tons) roadheaders have not seen much use in the United States, but are used extensively in Europe to excavate many types of underground openings in civil and mining applications. Early models of roadheaders were light and suitable only for utility excavation such as drift enlargement or chamber excavation, unless the ground was very soft and easily cuttable. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. is now using a 45-ton roadheader to excavate two mine slopes in Kentucky and a 70-ton roadheader to excavate a long decline at a new mine in Utah. Results to date indicate that heavy roadhead machines are an effective alternative to both conventional excavation and full-face boring machines in many cases; and where circumstances are favorable are a superior choice. This paper concentrates on applications in the mine development construction industry, but the conclusions are no less valid for civil construction.

Refractory gold ores are those from which a significant percentage of the gold cannot be recovered by conventional cyanidation. Historically, roasting has been the primary method for rendering such ores amenable to gold extraction; however, roasting creates environmental problems that are not acceptable in many locations. During the 1980s, consistently strong gold prices drew increasing attention to refractory gold ores, and new processing schemes were commercialized, most prominently aqueous pressure oxidation and more recently bacterial oxidation. Since 1985, pressure oxidation has been incorporated into four plants processing refractory gold ores. A fifth plant is scheduled for start-up in early 1990, and three additional plants are scheduled for production before late 1992. A technical session on treatment of refractory ores was included in the program of `World Gold '89, a Gold Forum on Technology and Practices' held by SME and the AusIMM in Reno, NV, Nov. 5-8, 1989. This article summarizes material from five of the papers presented during the refractory gold session and published in the proceedings of `World Gold '89,' edited by Roshan Bhappu and Rod Harden.
