The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor. Modern ash handling systems exist in considerable numbers and a great deal of design and operating experience has been accumulated, It is the endeavor of this paper to point to a number of frequently recurring problems, A general appreciation of these problems will be helpful in both design and operation of systems. The light fly ash and the heavy bottom ash present different problems, and each will therefore be treated separately. Fly ash is collected in the ducting from the furnace to the stack and beneath the mechanical and electrostatic dust collectors. The greatest amount of dust is collected beneath the mechanicals and electrostatics. Hoppers are generally provided as integral parts of the collector. Suitable valves and piping are connected to these hoppers for removal of the dust. The size and shape of these hoppers are important factors in determining frequency of handling and the capacity of the system.

Theoretical and analytical analyses of three mitigative measures- plane fitting method, trenching, and tension cable led to the development of a total protection plan to eliminate or reduce damages to the residential structures subjected to surface movements caused by underground longwall mining. The protection plan was applied to twelve residential houses and two external garages. The success rate is overwhelming. This paper describes the methods employed for protection and results of those case studies.

When considering all the aspects of a viable mine plan, it is important to estimate the accurate cost of mine ventilation, which varies as a function of airway dimensions, fan selection and ventilation network. Optimization of the overall elements of ventilation design can lead to very significant cost savings when capital and operating cost savings are considered in combination. This paper will describe a methodology, whereby ventilation costs can be minimized by optimizing the ventilation aspects of mine design and fan selection, by providing a brief description on ventilation theory and the factors which affect ventilation operating and capital costs.

In practice, geochemical analyses can be grouped in two broad categories according to their aim. Those that seek to determine the exact chemical composition of geological materials fall under the heading of assays, whereas applied geochemistry concerns itself with the detection of anomaly contrasts. Recent trends have blurred the distinction between both approaches for many users, as methods that were traditionally used for assays are being adopted in applied geochemistry and assays make increasing use of instrumental techniques. Nevertheless. it is important to keep a clear distinction between the two types of analyses because it has immediate practical consequences, cost is the most obvious, as well as fundamental implications. In the broadest terms, the goal of geochemistry is to strike an optimal balance between throughput and accuracy, at the lowest reasonable cost, while assays strive for accuracy. Traditionally, complete silicate analysis has been the concern of assayers whereas exploration geochemists have been more interested in base metal analyses where acid extractions of the elements, without dissolution of the silicate matrix, has been the norm. This kind of distinction is less realistic now, especially with the growth in lithogeochemical studies, and some overlap in methodology is unavoidable. However, where such overlaps occur the distinction remains in the emphasis of the work. A commonly used example is that although HF acid preparations are used by both, the emphasis in applied geochemistry is on sample throughput and batch analysis, whereas assayers are more concerned with the range of elements to be determined (Thompson and Walsh, 1983).

Precedence constraints are broadly used in mathematical models and algorithms for mine planning to model, for example, slope angles in open pit operations or connectivity in underground mines. Unfortunately, these constraints do not capture relevant geometrical aspects for the design of the mine like minimum bottom space of pits or smoothness of the economic envelope in block caves. In this work, we present different approaches that utilize precedence constraints generating economic envelops that are more suitable for design purposes. The numerical experiences show that the proposed techniques produce high value envelops with better geometrical properties and that the methods proposed can be computed efficiently.

Currently, empirical models are used for predicting the hydrocyclone performance in terms of capacity, cut size (d50,c), water split and partition curve. These models, for example those of Lynch and Plitt, have been developed and checked for hydro cyclones with diameters larger than four inches. For smaller diameter hydrocyclones little empirical modelling has been done. This paper reports extended experimental research on small hydrocyclones. For these cyclones, the suitability of existing empirical models has been checked and their accuracy compared. Modifications of the existing models equations are proposed, improving their predictive capability for the small cyclones performance.

Gold Fields acquired an option to purchase the Cerro Corona Project, located in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca Department, Perú, in December 2003. In January 2006, the option was taken up and the transaction closed. During the intervening months, Project development occurred against the backdrop of a Presidential election, increasing national social activism and environmental regulation, rapidly escalating operating and capital costs, as well as unprecedented demand for engineering and technical skills. Project “Lessons Learned” are outlined and discussed in the context of an evolving strategy.

Upgrading of a low-grade titanium slag (~55% TiO2) with high silica, calcia, magnesia and iron contents has been studied using sulphation roasting technique using SO2/air gas mixture followed by hydrochloric acid leaching. XRD analysis of the sulphated slag reveals the presence of kennedyite (Fe2O3. MgO. 3TiO2), rutile (TiO2), calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2) phases. The residue after leaching contains mainly kennedyite, rutile phases and free silica with traces of calcium silicate phase. Synthetic rutile that has about 83% TiO2 can be produced at the optimum conditions. Thermodynamic calculations give rational explanations of the obtained results.

In Mindola mine on the Zambian Copperbelt, there is a plan to extend the current production level of 1.2-1.5 km (3,900-4,900 ft) with five additional production levels. Research work indicated that the present total heat output of 38.6 MW will inevitably increase to 63.2 MW in 25 years. Estimated WB and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 33.8/40.2°C (93/104°F) and 35.3142.10C (95/108°F) respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9, 000 MW.

Introduction Guar gum is a natural nonionic polysaccharide. Guaran, the functional polysaccharide in guar gum is a chain of (1?4)-linked ß-D-mannopyranose units with a-D-galactopyranose units connected to the mannose backbone through (1?6) glycosidic linkages. The poly-mannose chain is randomly substituted with galactose units at a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 1.8-1.0 [1]. Cheng et al. reported that the molecular weight of natural guar gum is 1.935 • 106 [2]. Robinson et al. found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105 [3]. Guar gum is frequently used as a depressant of naturally hydrophobic gangue minerals (e.g. talc) in the flotation of PGM-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. a wide variety of modified guar gums are available for this application [4]. The Canadian potash industry utilizes natural guar gum as a blinder of water-insoluble slimes in the flotation of potash (sylvinite) ores, a process that is carried out in a saturated KCl/NaCl brine. The role of the polysaccharide is to prevent a primary amine collector from adsorbing onto these unwanted fine minerals. Hydrophobic interactions between basal cleavage planes and the polymer appear to be involved in guar gum adsorption on talc [5,6]. Liu and Laskowski stressed the importance of metal impurities on mineral surfaces that can serve as the active sites for polysaccharide adsorption [7]. This postulate was consistent with the later observation that, in addition to hydrogen bonding, the adsorption of guar gum onto talc was strongly dependent on the surface concentration of magnesium sites [8,9]. In this case the adsorption process was visualized as metal-polysaccharide complexation facilitated by the cis-configuration of the hydroxyl groups of mannose monomers. Hydrogen bonding and chemical interactions with metal sites were also suggested by Rath and Subramanian in their studies on guar gum adsorption on biotite mica [10]. In a recent study, Wang et al. demonstrated that hydrogen bonding is the main driving force behind guar gum adsorption onto talc [11]. Their data also show that the adsorption density of guar gum on alumina is about five times lower than the adsorption density on talc. Pawlik and Laskowski reported that the amount of guar gum adsorbed on illite was independent of ionic strength over a wide range of salt concentrations [12]. The adsorption density of the polysaccharide on illite did not measurably change with ionic strength from that of distilled water to about 50%-saturated KCl/NaCl potash brine (~3N KCl/NaCl). However, guar gum adsorption on dolomite dramatically decreased over the same range of ionic strengths, and no reliable explanation of that phenomenon was proposed [12]. The water structure-breaking or structure-making capabilities of background ions are usually ignored when discussing adsorption mechanisms of polymers. The concept of “structure breakers” and “structure makers” was first introduced by Gurney, and Frank and Wen who postulated that each ion is surrounded by three distinct regions of water structure [13,14]. In the first layer, water molecules are tightly bound to the ion. The second region extends farther away from the ion and is referred to as the region of structure breaking. Only at larger distances, where the ionic field is weak, water molecules form the “normal” ice-like structure. It is also now recognized that the first layer can be further divided into the primary and secondary hydration shells. Small, strongly hydrated ions reinforce the “normal” structure of water and the region of structure breaking disappears. In contrast, large less-hydrated ions disturb the ice-like structure and generate an extensive region of structure breaking. Experimentally, these two effects can readily be distinguished through viscosity measurements. Increasing concentrations of structure-breaking ions result in a decrease of the viscosity of aqueous solutions. On the other hand, increasing amounts of structure-makers significantly reduce the viscosity of water. Alkali metal cations form a sequence known as the Hofmeister series. Few departments of mining, metallurgical or petroleum engineering in the United States have critical mass. Cost per student credit hour (SCH) in departments across the country are usually the highest among engineering departments, which are the highest on campus. Almost all departments are operating at fixed costs and enrollments could easily double without incurring much additional cost. However, the cost per SCH would remain unacceptably high and the probability of doubling enrollment is nil. Declining enrollment is a more likely future. The pressure to reduce SCH from university administration is unrelenting. And it has the potential for doing serious damage to program quality when standards and requirements are lowered in attempts to maintain enrollments and increase retention.

The extraction of nickel has been carried out by the hollow fiber membrane technique using D2EHPA as the mobile carrier from the manganese nodule leach liquor after separation of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Co(II). The experiments were designed according to central composite design (CCD), which is a response surface methodology. The process parameters used for the experimental design were: pH, concentration of D2EHPA in the membrane phase, flow rate and H2SO4 concentration in the strip solution. Based on the analysis of variance, a reduced quadratic model was found to best fit the experimental data. The process parameters were optimized to maximize the nickel flux and the optimized conditions were flow rate: 630 mL/min; pH: 6.37; D2EHPA: 1.15 mol/L (1,150 mol/m3) and H2SO4: 2.39% (430.2 mol/m3), for a maximum nickel flux of 7.08 x 10-5 mol/m2.s, which was in good agreement with the actual Ni flux of 6.99 x 10-5 mol/m2.s.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete segmental rings are the final tunnel lining for approximately 85% of the alignment for a 6.706-meter (22-foot) internal diameter tunnel being built as part of the East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project. This paper describes the approach adopted for the design of the steel fiber reinforced concrete segments, the development of the performance criteria for the segments, and the testing program used to confirm the performance of the materials and segments in the laboratory and in the field.

A packed column (or static tube) flotation system is an innovative technology which utilizes a controlled dispersion reagent scheme and a new machine. The unique aspect of the machine is its packed-bed design permitting an unlimited froth bed height with countercurrent water washing for effective processing of fine particles. In operation, the conditioned ore slurry is fed into the middle section of the column where separation processes begin. Air, introduced at the bottom of the packed column, contacts the hydrophobic particles and floats them off continuously as the feed is added, while the gangue sinks to the base of the column. The system functions efficiently because intimate particle-bubble contact is achieved by the packing design which has no moving parts and requires no ancillary air-bubble generator. Other attractive features of the packed column flotation include high throughput, low power requirements, and simple control. Results from laboratory and pilot plant tests of this system show remarkable improvements over current industrial practices on a wide variety of ores and coals.

Laboratory results from an initial study on the removal of SO2 from gas mixtures are reported using air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) technology. Tap water and alkaline solutions were used for absorption and the influence of gas flow rate, water flow rate and length of the ASH unit were investigated. Complete removal of SO2 was possible with very favorable kinetics. The efficiency of sulfur dioxide absorption from air using the ASH is compared with the efficiency of conventional technology.

"In the mineral processing, clay minerals have negative effects on the flotation of valuable minerals. In this study, we investigated how the floatability of malachite (CuCO3·Cu(OH)2) is affected by presence of the clay minerals in the fundamental aspects. Flotation experiments were conducted by using Na2S and PAX (potassium amyl xanthate), and the floatability of malachite was compared between the cases in the presence and absence of clay minerals. The results showed that floatability was greater in the absence of clay minerals than in the presence of clay minerals and decreased with increasing weight percent of kaolinite under same conditions applied. In addition to examine how clay minerals affect malachite floatability, we conducted flotation experiment with changing clay adding order. The results indeed showed that malachite floatability was affected by clay adding sequence. INTRODUCTION The demand of copper is growing as industrial development increases, but mineral resources are limited. Therefore, studies for Cu oxide flotation are being conducted to improve their recovery(1-3). However the mining industry is well aware of the difficulty in treating copper ores in the presence of clay minerals(4). Clay minerals have unique properties and these properties may affect flotation. In the previous studies, the effect of slime coating of clay minerals on flotation was investigated(4-6). For example, Zhao and Peng (2014), Peng and Zhao (2015), and Arnold and Aplan (1986) found that clay slime coating on chalcopyrite, chalcocite and coal surfaces through the electrostatic attraction reduced surface hydrophobicity and then depressed the flotation. Other researchers have also reported clay minerals have impact on pulp rheology. Especially in the case of bentonite, pulp viscosity increased with increasing amount of bentonite and the higher pulp viscosity have deleterious effect on copper recovery(7, 8). However, these studies only focus on slime coatings and pulp rheological behavior. Forbes et al. attempted to decoupling rheology and slime coatings effect on flotation but this study has limitation that individual role of two clay species either attached to mineral or suspended in bulk solution was excluded(9). Hence, in this study, we aimed to investigating the effects of individual clay (suspended and attached) on malachite flotation."

This paper deals with the development of an evaluation system for sustainability in the minerals extraction. By their application, aspects of sustainable development in the raw minerals industry are to be systematically conceived and assessed.
