Coal preparation for a company having several sources of coal and several contracts for sale of coal was modeled. The objective was to minimize wash loss by selecting the quantity of coal to be supplied from each source and the appropriate washbox specific gravity setting to yield contract quality for a given shipment. constraints inposed by silo and stockpile sizes, plant and rehandling capacities, and varying coal quality specifications were included in the model. Solution is by iterative linear programming on an Apple II.

Veins containing silver and gold values, with some associated values in copper, lead, and zinc, were discovered in 1890 by Will Kirwin in what was later designated the Kirwin mining district situated on the North Fork of the Wood River, about 56 km (35 miles) west of Meeteetse. (See Fig. I.) After considerable prospecting activity, including the driving of several short adits on veins, most of theclaims in the district were consolidated into two ownerships. One was held by the Galena Ridge Mining Co. which was organized on Nov. 18, 1902. The other was held by the Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. which was organized on Mar. 23, 1903. During the period from 1903 to 1907 inclusive, the two companies continued exploration on veins in their respective areas. The major exploration-development activity for the Galena Ridge Mining Co. was the driving of the Galena Ridge crosscut adit for 709 m (2327 ft), to cut veins at depth which had been explored by short adits high on Galena Ridge. Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. concentrated their work on the Bryan and Pickwick veins. Neither of the companies found ore that was rich enough to sustain profitable operations in that remote locality. Most of the major exploration and development activities were stopped in late 1907. A major snowslide in February 1907 killed three people and destroyed several buildings and may have contributed to discouragement in the area. From 1908 to the early 1920s, only minor exploration work was done. Galena Ridge Mining Co. was dissolved Aug. 5, 1922, and Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. was dissolved on Mar. 23, 1923.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common water pollution problem on active and abandoned coal mine sites in the eastern United States. AMD forms when surface mining brings unweathered pyrite-containing rocks to the surface or when deep mining allows oxygen to contact buried pyritic strata. In the absence of neutralizing compounds, the drainage that results can be extremely acidic and contaminated with dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfate. Drainages with pH < 3.0 and concentrations of sulfate greater than 1,000 mg/L, iron greater than 50 mg/L, and manganese greater than 10 mg/L are common. Where water flows through alkaline materials (such as limestone) before surfacing, the drainage is less acidic and occasionally circumneutral, but it can still contain high concentrations of sulfate and metals. Current water quality standards in the United States require that mine discharges have a pH between 6 and 9, total iron concentration less than 3.0 mg/L, and manganese less than 2.0 mg/L. At thousands of active and inactive mine sites, drainage does not meet these standards and is being treated before discharge by the mining company. At thousands of other sites, which were abandoned prior to the enactment of water pollution laws or were operated by companies that have gone bankrupt, untreated AMD is polluting receiving water systems. The standard mine drainage treatment system involves the addition of a1 kal ine chemicals to the water, which raises the pH and cause metals to precipitate in a settling pond. These systems are expensive, often costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for chemicals, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the metal- laden sludge. Because the drainage on many sites will likely be contaminated for decades, there is financial incentive to find alternative water treatment systems. In the last five years, many mining companies and engineering firms have experimented with the construction of wetland treatment systems. Very few of the several hundred wetland systems that have been built are performing well enough to justify total abandonment of chemical treatment. Nonetheless, systems continue to be built because the mining companies have found that wetlands can reduce their AMD treatment costs. It is also their hope that further research and development will eventually result in systems that will completely rep1 ace chemical treatment and offer long term performance at minimal cost. The Bureau of Mines has been actively involved, from a research perspective, with this approach to AMD treatment since its inception. In this paper, the status of constructed wetland technology is discussed with respect to the construction and performance of systems, chemical and biological processes that affect AMD chemistry within constructed wetlands, and the future of this technology as perceived by the Bureau of Mines. ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS The constructed wetland concept has its roots in observations of natural Sphaqnum peat wetlands that received acid mine drainage and, instead of being adversely affected, appeared to cause an amelioration of the polluted water (Huntsman et al. 1978; Wieder and Lang 1982). These observations instigated the idea that wet1 and systems might be used for the intentional treatment of mine drainage. Because the discharge of AMD into a natural wetland is prohibited in the U.S. by several laws, it has been necessary to construct wetlands which act solely as water treatment systems. Initially, most wetland research and construction efforts mimicked the original observations by utilizing Sphaqnum moss and peat. Despite promising laboratory results (Kleinmann et al. 1983; Tarleton et al. 1984; Burris et al. 1984; Gerber et al. 1985), virtually all field tests of Sphasnum-dominated constructed wetlands failed to provide sufficient water treatment for more than several months. Sphasnum proved quite sensitive to the stresses associated with transplanting, abrupt changes in water chemistry, excessive or insufficient water depth, and

Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as a flux in smelting or leached out to extract gold. To decrease arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the lattice to free the gold, raw materials are roasted. This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. The process allows to minimize the negative influence on the environment but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a neutral medium or with limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and may be carried out in the autogeneous mode in fluid bed furnaces. If oxidizing roasting of the concentrates is done in the presence of soda, practically all arsenic and sulfur form water-soluble compounds and remain in cinder.

Kyanite. andalusite, and sillimanite are anhydrous aluminum silicate minerals, and they have the same chemical formula, Al2SiO3. Dumortierite and topaz are also classified as aluminum silicates although they contain boron and fluorine respectively. Mullite (a rare mineral named for its discovery site, the Scottish island of Mull) is produced when kyanite, andalusite, or sillimanite are heated. Synthetic mullite, also classified as an aluminum silicate, is formed by melting alumina and silica, bauxite, and kaolin or alumina, kaolin, and kyanite, depending on the type of synthetic mullite desired. These materials are either sintered in rotary, periodic, or tunnel kilns, or fused in an electric arc furnace. The world&apos;s largest producer of kyanite is the United States. Domestic kyanite is presently produced from one company at two sites in Virginia; Kyanite Mining Corporation mines kyanite from Willis Mountain and adjacent East Ridge in Buckingham County in the central Piedmont province of Virginia. Internationally, kymite is produced in Australia, Brazil, India, Kenya, Sweden, and Zimbabwe; the former USSR also produces kyanite (Fig. 1). Andalusite is produced by Piedmont Minerals Company, Inc. in the Piedmont province near Hillsborough, NC. Andalusite is also produced in France, India, the Republic of South Africa, and Spain (Fig. 1). Sillimanite is produced in Australia, Brazil, India, Spain, and the Republic of South Africa; the former USSR is also thought to be a major producer (Fig. 1). Some of the countries produce only for domestic use. Synthetic mullite, made by sintering and by electric arc fusion, is produced by Mulcoa (Mullite Company of America) in Andersonville, GA, and by Washington Mills Electro Minerals Corporation in Niagara Falls, NY. Annual world production of kyanite, andalusite, sillimanite, and synthetic mullite is approximately 672 727 tons (Potter, 1988). GEOLOGY Mineralogy Kyanite is a blue to light-green, triclinic mineral that occurs in long, thin-bladed crystals and crystalline aggregates in gneiss, schist, and pegmatites. The mineral has a hardness of 5 parallel to the long axis of the crystal and a hardness of 7 across the crystal. Andalusite is a yellow, brown, green, or red orthorhombic mineral that occurs in thick, almost square prisms in schist, gneiss, and hornfels. Gem quality andalusite exhibits a strong pleochroism; brownish-green in one direction and brownish-red perpendicular to it. Andalusite also occurs in placer concentrations where it has weathered out of rock. Sillimanite is a brown, pale-green, gray, or white orthorhombic mineral that occurs in long, slender, needlelike crystals in schist and gneiss. Chemical and Physical Properties Chemical and physical properties of kyanite, andalusite, and sillimanite are noted in Table 1. Kyanite is the only mineral that irreversibly expands when heated (calcined to produce mullite) and may offset the shrinkage of most ceramic or refractory ingredients when heated.

Since the promulgation of the Mine Safety and Heath Administration?s (MSHA?s) Final Rule on mine seals (30 CFR § 75.335(b)), which became effective on October 20, 2008, many seal designs have been approved by MSHA and constructed by the mining industry. Since the effective date of the Final Rule, several issues on the design, construction, and/or inspection of seals have been brought to the attention of MSHA. Several such issues discussed in this paper include; the directional, design-load criteria required by MSHA for 50-psi seals, 120-psi seals, and greater-than-120-psi seals; the presence of fireclay in the surrounding strata where a mine seal is to be built; the measurement of convergence of the mine opening in which a seal has been constructed; where gob-isolation seals can be used; and the importance of periodic inspection of seals.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an attractive area of research in such fields as CO2 mineral carbonation, global warming and sustainable energy systems. In this study, carbonation efficiency for aqueous mineral carbonation (MC) was achieved through two steps,which include leaching of calciumfrom cement kiln dust (CKD) followed by the reaction of pure CO2 with the calcium hydroxide precipitates formed by the hydroxylation using NaOH. Response surface methodology (RSM) with a Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to optimize the calciumleaching yield,while the carbonation efficiency from CKD was assessed using RSMwith central composite design (CCD). Optimization of calcium leaching is highly important, as it is a rate-limiting reaction step in MC and also influences and enhances carbonation efficiency. Different parameters including acid concentration (HNO3), leaching temperature, leaching time, and dose of CKD sample were considered in order to optimize the maximum yield of Ca leaching from the CKD sample. In addition, different CO2 flow rates and temperatures were used as parameters for optimizing carbonation efficiency. Two quadratic regression models were developed for each process, i.e. calciumleaching and carbonation. For calcium leaching, a maximum of 98.55% calcium was extracted under the optimal set of acid concentration 4.13 M, 90 °C, 28 min leaching time, and 13.8 g of CKD sample. For carbonation, the maximum carbonation efficiency of 89.2% was achieved for a CO2 flow rate of 1163 cm3/min at 90 °C. Calcium leaching results indicate that the leaching yield was significantly affected by all the input parameters except leaching time. For carbonation, both factors affected the carbonation efficiency, with the effect temperature shown to be greater than that of the CO2 flow rate. Additionally, the predicted results agreed well with the experimental values for both calcium leaching and carbonation processes, with errors of less than 1% and 5%, respectively.

Many large. low-grade (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to concentration by conventional flotation practice, Over the past several years Santa Fe Pacific Gold (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat low-grade refractory resources of this type at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

Despite significant safety improvements, the mining industry remains one of the most hazardous occupations globally and the evacuation of Miners, when an uncontrollable incident occurs in the mine, is the best bet to saving lives. However, Human factors/behaviors during an emergency are likely to influence the evacuation performance. Other industries have made a significant effort to determine these human factors that can impede evacuation performance, however, the current state-of-the-art in mine evacuation or self-rescue is that the evacuation route is predetermined, and a static sign is used to direct miners to the predetermined safe location. This method is limited in representing actual conditions that arise in a real emergency, neglecting the different behaviors displayed by humans. As optimization of the evacuation of a mine plays a fundamental role in emergencies and modeling evacuation behavior and movement of miners is a complex task, this research utilized Agent-Based simulations to simulate the evacuation behavior and performance. It was observed that people with the smart evacuation device made fewer mistakes and arrived at the safe place in less time compared to those have no access to the device. The Mathematical model used in optimizing the shortest path to a safe place is also explained in this paper.

INTRODUCTION In May 1984, The Canadian Pacific Railway awarded to the Joint Venture of Foundation of Canada, Ltd. of Toronto, Atlas Construction Co. of Montreal, and S. A. Healy Co. of Chicago the contract for the construction of 27,000 ft of tunnel starting from the east portal. Selkirk contractors, the Joint Venture of Foundation, Atlas and Healy, which had successfully completed for CPR in 1983 the construction of both portal structures for this tunnel, studied several different alternative proposals before presenting its bid pooling each individual company&apos;s technical resources and experiences. (Foundation had just completed in association with other companies a similar tunnel project in British Columbia, and the S. A. Healy Co. could provide its experience of more than 40 miles of tunnels excavated by full face boring machines.) Among the alternatives investigated there was a fully circular tunnel to be excavated by a 30 ft diameter TBM, a full section drill and shoot proposal, and a mixed alternative, the "key hole" proposal, consisting of a TBM driven circular top heading followed by benching to design size. Technical, geological and economical considerations determined the alternative that was eventually proposed to CPR. HISTORICAL NOTES The tunnel construction parallels an existing tunnel through the Selkirk mountains that was excavated in 1885. In order to reduce the grade to 1% on the heavily loaded west bound trains, the new tunnel was at a lower elevation and lengthened to almost 9 miles. GEOTECHNICAL INFORMATION CP Rail site investigations began in 1978. The surface rocks in the tunnel construction area are metamorphosed Cambrian and Pre-Cambrian sediments; the underlying formation contains fine and coarse grained rocks presenting different degrees of metamorphism. INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations&apos; information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. Phase III of the Orme Street Combined Trunk Relief Sewer project connects two existing 2.13 m diameter combined sewers to a new 3.66 m diameter relief sewer at 7locations along a 970 m alignment in downtown Atlanta. The alignment was enveloped by adjacent structures and utilities. The project was constructed below the groundwater table through compressible residual soil, rock and mixed face using a myriad of construction techniques, including compressed air NATM and jet grouting. Numerous design and alignment changes and accommodations for existing utilities and conditions were made during construction. The authors believe this to be the ?rst NATM project in North America utilizing compressed air tunneling.

The Tayoltita Unit of Minas de San Luis, S. A. is situated in an isolated corner of the state of Durango, Mexico. The ore deposits in the region were first worked by Indians, but by 1757 the Spaniards had discovered them, and the first systematic exploitation of the mines commenced. By the early 1900&apos;s most of the mines had been acquired by American interests, and the San Luis Mining Company was organized. The modern period of exploitation, uninterrupted for the last 74 years, began. In 1962 the company was fully "Mexicenized" in compliance with the modification of the mining law, and the name was changed to Minas de San Luis, S. A. Tayoltita continues as one of Mexico&apos;s most important silver and gold mines. The ore is extracted in en extensive underground operation, mining epithermal fissure veins by selective methods. The ore is milled and treated in an efficient counter-current cyanide plant, where 95 % of the silver and 96 % of the gold is recovered. Current annual bullion output is 55,000 kg (1.7 million troy oz) of silver and 1000 kg (31,000 troy oz) of gold from milling 165,000 try (181,900 stpy). Rough, 33-kg (1000-troy oz) bullion bars are smelted at the mine, shipped by air to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and are thence sold to the Met- Mex Peñoles smelter in Torreon, Coahuila. Ore reserves, blocked by very conservative methods, are currently at 540,000 tons (595,000 st). Ore reserve grade is 425 g of silver and 6 g of gold per ton (12.4 troy oz Ag and 0.18 troy oz Au per st).

"The waters of Lake Superior flow into those of Lake Huron through the St. Mary&apos;s river. The rapids in this river are about half a mile wide and three-quarters of a mile long, in which distance the fall amounts to about twenty feet. Since this was the only obstacle to navigation between the west end of Lake Superior and ports on any of the other Great Lakes except Ontario, attempts were made many years ago to permit the passage of small boats from Lake Huron to Lake Superior by means of canals and locks. The first canal was built on the Canadian side of the river by the Northwest Fur Company in 1797-98. The lock was 38 feet long, 8 feet 9 inches wide and had a lift of 9 feet. A tow path was made along the shores for oxen to track the bateaux and canoes through the upper part of the rapids., The lock was destroyed during the war of 1812 by United States troops from Mackinac Island.The first ship canal, known as the State Canal, was built on the American side of the river in 1853-55, about 750,000 acres of land in Michigan having been granted by congress to a private company as a &apos;concession for its construction. This canal was more than a mile long, 65 feet wide at the bottom and 100 feet wide at the water&apos;s surface. It had two locks, each 350 feet long by 70 feet wide, with a lift of about 9 feet. The depth of water in the canal was about 13 feet and in the locks about 11 1/2 feet."

INTRODUCTION The basic purpose of this paper is to suggest procedures and practices to insure that no employee working in a uranium milling operation receives exposure to radioactive, toxic, or other materials or agents that might produce a permanent, deleterious effect upon his physical health and well-being. This program is also designed to insure that each employee can carry out his assigned duties without risk to his health or to that of his fellow workers. The assumptions underlying this program are by necessity, conservative, with emphasis being placed upon prevention rather than correction or reaction to an undesirable situation. The limits specified-either as Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), Maximum Permissible Concentrations (MPCs), or Radiation Protection Guides (RPGs)--represent both standards of best practice and those of law and regulation. The total program is envisioned as a balanced combination of occupational hygiene and radiation monitoring. This includes surveying, air sampling, personnel dosimetry, bioassay, medical surveillance, epidemiology, and training--all backed by a thoroughly tested and evaluated set of emergency procedures. The program, as presented, is keyed to the results of monitoring, surveying, air sampling, medical surveillance, and epidemiology--it being obvious that no problem can result when no hazard can be identified. The lack of an identified hazard, however, does not negate the need for such a program and prudence suggests the need for routine surveillance programs in the best-designed facility. [The Model Mill] The model mill used in this paper is that presented by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in its study of the uranium fuel cycle1. The model mill processes 600,000 metric tons of ore per year into 1,140 metric tons of U308 as yellowcake per year using an acid leach process. Other characteristics of the mill such as location, tailings dam design, number of light water reactors supported, and geographical location are not pertinent to this paper. The usual remote western location of these facilities produce some difficulties in delivering the required occupational medical services and is not within the scope of this paper. The operating lifetime of most mills is commonly estimated as from 12 to 15 years in actual practice; however, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated a 20-year lifetime for its model. The principal steps in the acid leach process include :2 (a) Ore is blended and crushed to pass through a 2.5 cm (one inch) screen. The crushed ore is then wet ground in a rod or ball mill and is transferred as a slurry to leaching tanks. (b) The ore is contacted with sulfuric acid solution and an oxidizing reagent to leach uranium from the ore. The product liquor is pumped to the solvent-extraction circuit while the washed residues (tailings) are sent to the tailings pond or pile. (c) Solvent extraction is used to purify and concentrate the uranium. (d) The uranium is precipitated with ammonia and transferred as a slurry. (e) Thickening and centrifuging are used to separate the uranium concentrate from residual liquids. (f) The concentrate is calcined and pulverized. (g) The concentrate or yellowcake is packaged in 208 liter drums for shipment. This process is illustrated in Figure 1.3

The Downtown Rail Extension (DTX) is principal element of the planned second phase of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority’s (TJPA) Transbay Program. When complete, this regionally critical project will connect Caltrain’s regional rail system and the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s statewide system to the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco via a 1.3-mile tunnel. Studied since the 1970s, the DTX has now received environmental clearance, and key stakeholders are aligned on the project’s configuration and its expedited delivery. This paper describes efforts to optimize the DTX configuration and develop an informed project delivery strategy that incorporates construction industry feedback on project phasing, contract packaging, and procurement methods that accomplish the project’s budget goals.

Ground water inflow into a mine and the re¬sultant impact on district hydrology can be pre¬dicted on a site specific basis once the ground water flow systems at the site are sufficiently well under¬stood so that a valid conceptual model can be de¬veloped. Ground water flow systems are controlled by the hydrogeologic properties of the materials at the, site, including hydraulic continuity along flow paths, and boundary conditions. Preliminary delin¬eation of hydrostratigraphic units for conceptual models frequently can be based on surface water data; specifically, spring locations and the gain-loss reaches of streams. Quantitative predictions of mine water inflow and its impact on regional hydrology require col¬lection and analysis of numerous types of data. Hydraulic conductivity must be defined quantita¬tively both parallel and perpendicular to bedding as well as areally for each hydrostratigraphic unit. The characteristics of the Davis shale in case his¬tory number 2 illustrate this concept very well. The storage characteristics also must be determined for each hydrostratigraphic unit and the potential or hydrostatic head should be quantified vertically and areally for each unit. The potentiometric measure¬ments in the Bonneterre Formation as discussed in case history number 2 illustrate this point. The data collection and data analysis techniques constitute the weak link in the analysis of mine inflow and district impact. The technology for char¬acterizing a mine site in the field has lagged behind the technology for mathematical simulation; we at¬tribute this development to the fact that computer modeling is relatively inexpensive compared to field data collection and analysis. On-site tests provide the best means of quan¬tifying hydraulic conductivity parallel to bedding and the storage characteristics of the unit. Pump tests with multiple observation wells provide the best information from on site tests. Hydrogeologie boundaries can be located from such multiple well tests. Multiport piezometers provide a means for determining the vertical potential in a single borehole. Borehole geophysics can facilitate the def¬inition of hydrostratigraphic units. Vertical hy¬draulic conductivity is difficult but not impossible to quantify with existing field test methods; labo¬ratory tests of cores fail to give a value represent¬ative of the field situation. The storage characteristics of a confined (artesian) hydro¬stratigraphic unit can be difficult to quantify when pumping changes the confined unit to an uncon¬fined (water table) case after depressurization and dewatering. Transmissivity and storage coefficient can be approximated to some extent for given field con¬ditions by computer modeling if enough is known about hydrogeologic boundaries. Modeling can be used in a trial-and-error approach to match transmissivity and storage coefficients to existing water level data corresponding to estimated discharge rates. A solution can also be obtained using a tech¬nique referred to as the inverse method. Unfortu¬nately, such a solution is seldom unique. Fracture flow models exist but practicality usu¬ally necessitates reversion to a basic Darcy flow model. Data requirements for fracture flow models could be difficult to fulfill where fracture aperture, spacing, orientation, and length are required. Ob¬taining such data at depth prior to mining would be impossible for any mine simulation in fractured media. We are of the opinion that most fractured media simulations can be accomplished using con¬ventional Darcy flow models by viewing the field problem on a macroscopic scale. The real challenge is to delineate hydrostratigraphic units properly in the field. The question of whether a broken-up fault zone is an aquifer or a barrier boundary is seldom simple. The fractures usually can be treated as an equivalent porous medium in either case. Only a few techniques exist for predicting un¬derground mine water inflow. These techniques fre¬quently are designed to evaluate shaft or tunnel inflow under steady-state head conditions in a sin¬gle layer rather than in multiple hydrostratigraphic units. Long range projections of demand for nonmetallic minerals are presented, together with data on the domestic resources which are available or which can be made available to meet the requirements through the balance of the century. Past successes in solving nonmetallic mineral requirement problems are briefly reviewed to illustrate the capability for solving present and future problems of a similar nature. Major problems threatening the future supply of specific industrial minerals are described together with possible methods for assuring the necessary raw materials for future needs. The growing importance of environ- mental degradation, land use conflicts, and other important factors which affect several or all of the nonmetallic mineral industries is covered, and the necessity of planning for efficient and orderly extraction and rehabilitation of mineral deposits is stressed. The present Bureau of Mines methods and tools for long range planning are briefly discussed.

Introduction The art of ripping has been around since the Romans built the Appian Way, but only in the last decade has ripping emerged as a close competitor with drilling and blasting in breaking up heavy rock formations. That is not to say ripping is as effective in every case, or even applicable in all cases, but it does provide a cost efficient option in many situations-if the optimum ripping techniques are used. Originally designed only to loosen hard pan, the ripper has evolved into a powerful tool, its capability increasing as the weight and horsepower of tractors increased. The tractor-mounted ripper extended the range of ripping because of the additional weight it brought to bear on the ripper tooth. Tandem ripping added the weight and power of a second tractor, extending the rippability range even further. Of course, the use of ripping depends on the type of material to be ripped. Not all rock can be ripped. Determination of rippability-an art in itself-is often inconclusive but there are certain universal principles that can be considered in the first step toward optimizing ripping techniques. Each of the three basic rock types, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, exhibits characteristics that bear on rippability. Igneous rocks are the most difficult to rip because they lack the stratification and cleavage planes essential to ripping hard rock. Sedimentary rocks are generally the most easily ripped since they are built of layers differing in material, texture, color, and thickness. Metamorphic rocks vary in rippability with degree of lamination or cleavage caused by transformation from pre-existing rock. The condition of rock also affects its rippability. Although sedimentary rocks offer the best opportunity to rip and igneous and metamorphic the least, decomposed granite and other weathered igneous and metamorphic rock often can be ripped economically. Little or no trouble is encountered with hardpan, clays, shales, or cemented gravel. Likewise, highly stratified or laminated rocks offer good possibilities for ripping. However, thicklybedded rock formations generally must be drilled and blasted. The physical characteristics that favor ripping may be summarized as follows: • Fractures, faults, and planes of weakness of any kind; • Weathering, resulting from temperature and moisture changes; • Brittleness and crystalline nature; • High degree of stratification or lamination; • Large grain size; • Moisture permeated clay, shale, and rock formations; and • Low compressive strength. Ripper Types A second fundamental to optimal ripping is choosing the right equipment for a particular job. There are three types of rippers-the hinge, the parallelogram, and the adjustable parallelogram. In the hinge ripper the linkage carrying the beam and shank pivots on a fixed point at the rear of the tractor. The resulting arc from up and down movement causes up to 30° differential in the tip-ground angle. Thus, the tooth angle changes as it enters and proceeds to ripping depth. The parallelogram ripper&apos;s linkage maintains the same tip-ground angle regardless of tooth depth. This type of ripper has advantages over the hinge-type when ripping above maximum depth, but does not provide the aggressive tooth angle necessary for hard-to-penetrate materials. The adjustable parallelogram combines the benefits of both the hinge and the parallelogram rippers. It has the additional benefit of being able to vary the tip angle to the optimum angle of penetration. It can also be adjusted while moving, for the optimum ripping angle in any material. Several other factors that are important in selecting the right ripping equipment are down pressure available at the tip of the ripper, tractor flywheel horsepower, and the tractor&apos;s gross weight. Down pressure at the tip determines whether ripper penetration can be obtained and maintained. Flywheel horsepower rating determines whether the tractor has the power to advance the tip. The tractor&apos;s gross weight determines whether the tractor will have sufficient- to use the horsepower. The best ripping procedure depends on the job&apos;s actual conditions. While conditions, vary, it is still possible to apply certain proven techniques to a typical ripping situation. Caterpillar Tractor Co.&apos;s Handbook on Ripping says optimum ripping efficiency can be realized if-before actual ripping begins-these questions and answers are considered.

How best to grind? This article compares conventional crushing and grinding circuits to semiautogenous circuits, reviews recent installations of each circuit, and describes seven methods of using autogenous or semiautogenous techniques. In addition, steel and power consumption data are reported and benefits of a dedicated digital computer are discussed. Size reduction is the most expensive operation in most mills. Crushing and grinding are usually the greatest part of capital costs. They often make up 60-70% of total mill operating costs. Picking the proper crushing and grinding method must, therefore, be done with great care, so the best circuit is chosen. In the past 10 years, there has been a strong trend toward using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding in mills throughout the world. Autogenous grinding is favored when the ore is quite competent and a fine grind is needed. Semiautogenous grinding is applied when fine crushing could cause severe problems or when ore varies in hardness or competency. The taconite iron ores of northern Minnesota fit the description for an autogenously ground ore and many are successfully ground that way. Most im¬pressive are the nine lines of 11 x 4.9 m (36 x 16 ft) mills powered by 9 MW (12,000 hp) motors at Hibbing Taconite. Porphyry copper and molybdenum ores fit the description for semiautogenous grinding. Recent installations include Highmont in British Columbia, Canada, and Quintana in New Mexico. Sampling Many mills have been built based on inadequate sampling data or insufficient tests. With the cost of many mills exceeding several hundred million dollars, it is mandatory that geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists work together to prepare representative testing samples. Simple, repeatable work index tests are usually sufficient for rod and ball mill tests. However, pilot plant tests on 50-100 t (55-110 tons) of ore are frequently necessary for autogenous or semiautogenous mills. Preparation and selection of the test sample is of utmost importance. Procedures for autogenous and semiautogenous mill pilot plant tests are relatively simple for those experienced in running them. Reliable and repeatable results can be obtained if simple, fundamental procedures are followed. The accompanying figure shows a typical conventional crushing-grinding circuit with three stages of crushing followed by ball mills or a rod mill-ball mill combination. This flowsheet is typical of many mills that have been built throughout the world. Also shown is a typical semiautogenous (SAG) circuit with feed coming directly from a primary crusher, and the semiautogenous mill product going to the separation process. Many similar semiautogenous circuits are built today because they are simple and flexible, lend themselves readily to high tonnages, and usually cost less to build and operate. With some ores, it is possible to send mine-run ore directly to the semiautogenous mill, eliminating the need for a primary crusher, as at Benquet&apos;s Dizon mill in the Philippines. An autogenous or semiautogenous circuit, as the name implies, uses the ore itself to assist in the grinding process. Generally, for this type of circuit, the ore must be competent so large ore chunks can be used to grind smaller ones. If ore alone is used, then the circuit is autogenous; but if balls are added to supplement the charge, then the circuit is termed semiautogenous. Ore competency is not always a criterion, to break up large pieces and wash away cementing material. Autogenous and semiautogenous mills have been very successful on relatively soft uranium ores where the values are frequently found in the material that cements together the sandstone grains. Autogenous Circuits When an ore is hard and competent, it is always possible it might make good "pebbles" that could be used for fine grinding media.
