The particular impact of imported industrial minerals varies within the Industry and is dependent upon many diverse factors. In a similar way, the impact on individuals has been varied and the degree of impact will depend partially on the individual's ability to handle change. Just as many corporations are adjusting their marketing strategy and production methods to compensate for imported mineral products; individual managers, mining engineers and geologists are making adjustments to their own personal job marketing techniques and on-the-job operating procedures. Modifying the degree of impact for both industry and individuals depends upon the ability to adapt.

If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation's principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government's "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

The Main Pass sulphur and oil deposit is located at Main Pass Block 299 in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 miles east of Venice, Louisiana, in 210 feet of water. The deposit was discovered by Freeport-McMoRan and its joint venture partners, IMC Fertilizer and Homestake Mining, in late 1988-early 1989. The sulphur deposit contains 67 million long tons of recoverable sulphur. The sulphur occurs in bio-epigenetic limestone replacing anhydrite caprock on top of a salt diapir. Recoverable reserves of 39.4 million barrels of oil and 9.1 billion cubic feet of gas are also contained in the limestone caprock and in supracap sandstone stringers.

Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.

This is a summary of what has happened to the domestic production of two industrial minerals vital to a healthy US economy: fluorspar and barite. A few years ago we were self-sufficient in both minerals and good ore reserves still exist. Six potential locations along the west shore of Lake Mead were evaluated to site anew water intake pumping station for the SNWA. The evaluations were based upon geotechnical exploration results and conceptual intake pumping station designs. The exploration included geologic mapping, geophysical testing, underwater ROV inspections and borings. Ground surface and underground chamber pumping station designs were considered. Sites at Saddle Island, Black Canyon and Hoover Dam are geotechnically suitable. A Saddle Island site was selected because it has the most favorable conditions for the intake pumping station and the aqueduct to the Las Vegas valley.

The economics of the producer-consumer interface - the route from mine to market - impact much more severely on specialty industrial minerals, extender/fillers that have to be sold, than on commodity industrial minerals that are basically supplied. Working capital costs for inventories and accounts receivable, fixed capital costs for storage/ warehousing/distribution, and sales and marketing costs all make the extender/filler producer much more of a marketer than a miner. The future survival of an extender/filler producer will primarily depend on the skill he has in the economics of the interface.

Microscopic evaluation of trace quantities of metalliferous phases in flotation products requires counting large numbers of particles. Particle counts of many thousands may be required for precision, but not obtained practically by conventional microscopic techniques. A less tedious microscopic method for evaluating trace sulfides in mill tailings was developed for the O'okiep Mining Company in South Africa. Hundreds of thousands of particles were evaluated by this method called "gross-counting." Gross-counting consists of counting microscopic fields rather than point-counting individual particles. Total counts are calculated by multiplying the average number of particles per field by the total number of fields examined over the entire mount. Total gross-counts range from about 20,000 particles for +200 to 100,000 or more for -400 mesh size material in lucite mounts. Sulfides and metallic particles in each field are identified and tallied along with field counts. Totals for each type of metallic particle are divided by the total gross-count to give volume percent which is corrected to weight percent by specific gravity factors.

The iron mine and beneficiation facilities of Marcona Mining Company are located on the coast of south central Peru. The facilities include an open pit mine, crushing, concentrator containing grinding, magnetic-separation and flotation facilities, pelletizing plants and a completely self sufficient infrastructure. Total production capability is about 10,000,000 DLTPY, of which almost 6,000,000 DLT result from the fine-grind magnetic concentrate. Over 1,500,000 DLT of fine-grind concentrate is obtained from processing high-pyrrhotite ore. Although the orebody contains quantities of oxidized primary ore and transitional ores (mixed magnetite and hematite), the principal ore is predominantly a coarsely crystalline to fine grained massive magnetite.(l-3) In the primary ore the major impurities found are silicates and the iron sulfides- pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfur levels typically average about three percent although levels of five percent are not unusual and some ores contain up to ten percent total sulfides. In general the silicates and pyrite are readily rejected from finely ground primary ore by magnetic separation and very basic froth flotation processes. The high iron, low sulfur concentrate produced is particularly suitable for production of high quality oxide pellets. However, pyrrhotite is not removed from the magnetite matrix by either of' these simple beneficiation methods.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally mineral processing equipment has been procured based on (equipment) specifications prepared by the engineers. As newer materials of construction are being used for equipment manufacture and plant control systems become more sophisticated, the need for thorough and detailed specifications is greater than ever. For example, it is not uncommon to find plants looking at grinding circuits consisting of semiautogenous mills with variable speed, gearless, drives of large horsepower. Technical specifications for the mill, wrap- around motor and control system must, therefore, be carefully prepared to ensure that the respective equipment supplied by vendors meets overall grinding needs. Various engineering and design companies have expended considerable time and effort in developing the specification format. Equipment manufacturers have also given significant effort to developing data sheets aimed at collecting information regarding not only the duty of the equipment, but also the conditions under which it will be operated. As engineers moved from one company to another, the specification format became cross-fertilized and further developed. As a result, specifications on file with various engineers have improved considerably over a period of time. Equipment specifications from earlier projects are commonly used as a basis for tailoring new ones. To keep equipment specifications short, general technical considerations are often compiled as separate specifications. For example, general considerations applicable to the design, manufacture and supply of the mechanical equipment are consolidated under "Standard Requirements for Mechanical Equipment” and included along with that specified for purchase. As the economic feasibility of the project has been established during earlier studies, purchase-related activities can be initiated following completion of the specifications. Procurement itself is a major activity, however, in this chapter only those activities directly related to the purchase of equipment will be discussed. Silver has been a much maligned metal in recent years. In the last three and a half years the price has fallen from around US$7.00 -$7.80 to as low as $3.50 this spring. It has consistently under-performed most other precious metals in the past few years, and has fallen to its lowest levels since the late 1940s in inflation-adjusted terms. Perhaps this is beginning to change. Since April, silver prices have outperformed gold and platinum. While this may continue in the years ahead, key questions remain regarding the pace and timing of any future silver price advances. I want to talk about the supply and demand factors that have led silver to its recent position. Also, I will outline a possible path for silver supply, demand, and prices for the next several years. Before I dive into my discussion of the silver market, allow me to explain who I am. One of the points we always make to clients early in a relationship is that, when you are listening to someone's opinions, you always must remember who it is you are listening to, and why he might be saying whatever it is he wants you to hear. So often, people take opinions from brokers, traders, or investment advisors as gospel truth, never stopping to ask themselves two key questions: Is there any reason to believe that this person knows what he is talking about, and, second, is he trying to sell me something, in telling me this.

Today the coal industry is beginning to use some very fundamental economic evaluations to determine the most economical circuit to produce a specified saleable product. The fundamental economic methods used are standard return on investment and net present value calculations. By utilizing these economical evaluations, one can justify a larger capital expenditure and realize more return for an investment over the life of a coal property.

Mineral sand products have been produced from beach sand heavy minerals for nearly a century. These minerals have specific gravities of 3.0 or higher and are extremely resistant to weathering. The most common economic heavy minerals are ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, stauarolite, monazite, garnet, and the aluminum-silicate minerals. Of these, ilmenite is the most abundant. In some cases a deposit may contain only one or two economic heavy minerals whereas in others five or six may be present. Heavy mineral mining began in the late eighteen hundreds when monazite was mined for its thorium content. This was followed by mining activity on the North Florida coast just south of Jacksonville Beach - where ilmenite and zircon were first separated during the WW I (1,8). Modern heavy mineral mining began in Eastern Australia during the late nineteen-thirties and spread to the United States during World War II. It is the purpose of this paper to review the commercial heavy mineral products, their sources, and their uses.

We are in the midst of a transportation revolution. From the Wright Brothers to the SST. From the Toonerville Trolly to the 120-mile-an-hour Northeast Corridor train. From Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong. There is another side to this revolution and it is going on every day at our mines and factories. We call it bulk distribution. Perhaps ordinary sounding, but every bit as exciting as those other transportation innovations. Basically, we have gone from bag to bulk, and in the process reached that Last Frontier in manufacturing cost savings. By revitalization of our distribution system, we have made it possible for our mines and factories to realize fully the vast economies of spage-age manufacturing techniques and accomplishments. The pacesetters in this distribution revolution have been you gentlemen, the producers and shippers of dry mineral products. In this area bulk distribution grew up. And here most of the current innovations are being introduced. Management of your industry was early to realize the economic advantages of bulk distribution. Distribution costs of your products comprises a sizeable, portion of the selling price and management is sensitive of any developments which may even slightly reduce the cost of transportation, marketing or the exploration of new frontiers.

Trackless vehicles, as the name implies, are machines not bound to rails, guide cables, or other direction controlling devices. They include, for the most part, vehicles which are wheel or crawler (track laying) mounted. Power sources may be self contained such as diesel or battery and can be defined as non-captive machines, while connected power sources such as compressed air or electric can be defined as captive machines. Trackless vehicles are used in all phases of underground excavation, loading, hauling and dumping. Early application found most machines with digging ability used to load those with payload hauling ability. As the versatility of trackless methods became more obvious the trackless vehicle has evolved to more productive machines such as the self loading haulers commonly referred to as Load-Haul-Dump equipment. Trackless vehicles find wide use in drifting and tunneling. Ability to negotiate adverse grades is especially noteworthy. Experience drawn from highly efficient room and pillar mining operations has lead to relatively wide application in drawpoint and cut and fill mining.

"Much of the copper being produced today uses heap leaching, where pure metal is extracted from the ore with a chemical process rather than smelting. This technique is deployed extensively in major copper producing areas including Chile, Peru and the southwestern United States.Copper ore is excavated from the ground, crushed and then spread in uniform layers on a pad. A slow trickle of sulfuric acid is distributed over the pile, where it percolates to the bottom and a collection point. The acid leaches out the copper, along with other minerals, which can be extracted chemically. This process can be used at large sites producing 100 kt/a (110,000 stpy) and greater.Production on a massive scaleProduction at heap-leach sites is continuous and can operate on an enormous scale. The ore is fed into a crusher to break down the large pieces, and then it moves into an agglomerator to capture the fines and create more uniform particles. While in the agglomerator, the ore is mixed with acid for the first time, helping it to bind the fines into larger particles and starting the leaching process. The treated ore moves by conveyors to a stacker designed to spread it uniformly on the pad.The size of the operation comes into perspective by considering a typical pad measures 1.6-km (1-mile) long and 0.8-km (0.5-miles) wide. Working day after day, the stacker creates individual piles or modules on the pad, each 122 x 61 m (400 by 200 ft) and 3 m (10 ft) deep. When one module is filled, it moves across the pad to the next, filling the area in one continuous pile. A completed row of modules spanning the width of the pad is a cell. Once the entire pad is covered, the process begins again laying down another 3-m (10-ft) layer, and it continues until the entire pad reaches its height limit which can be several hundred feet.Once a new module is completed, technicians lay a network of plastic pipes over the surface in a pattern similar to agricultural drip irrigation installations. The diluted sulfuric acid, called raffinate, is pumped through the pipes so it can be distributed over the module, allowing the acid to soak through the ore and leach out copper as it percolates to the bottom. At the same time, approximately 35 to 45 percent of the acid is consumed by dissolving the calcite carrying the metal in the process. The raffinate reaching the bottom is now characterized as pregnant-leach solution (PLS) since it carries the copper the company is seeking to recover."

Cyanide is a toxic species that is found predominantly in industrial effluents generated by metallurgical operations. Cyanide's strong affinity for metals makes it favorable as an agent for metal finishing and treatment and as a lixivant for metal leaching, particularly gold. These technologies are environmentally sound but require safeguards to prevent accidental spills. Various methods of cyanide remediation by separation and oxidation, including photolytic advanced-oxidation processes, are therefore reviewed. Reaction mechanisms are presented throughout the paper. The methods are compared in regards to their effectiveness in treating various cyanide species: free cyanide, thiocyanate, weak-acid dissociables, and strong-acid dissociables.
