That which follows is an elucidation of the many factors-in emulsion technology in application. In applied surface chemistry for solid-particulate separation and concentration, emulsion flotation is one of the intermediate processes between froth flotation, in which the continuous phase is water (99.5 to 99.999% by volume), and particulate extraction, in which the continuous phase is almost entirely an organic-fluid. Until recently, the application of the Jameson Cell technology in North America has been restricted to minerals processing. Recently, laboratory, pilot-plant and full-scale testing has been conducted to assess the Jameson Cell's ability to effectively treat fine coal. Based on the data, carrying-capacity relationships have been developed. In addition to its operational simplicity, the Jameson Cell has the ability to provide a separation efficiency near the theoretical separation performance on the basis of ash rejection while achieving a relatively high throughput capacity Tie results obtained from the various fine coal cleaning applications in North America is presented in this publication.

INTRODUCTION In most uranium mines the concentration of uranium in the ore is low enough that inhalation of dust does not present a radiological problem. Conversely in the mills there is a potential inhalation hazard from inhaled uranium in concentrated form, namely "yellowcake" and other compounds intermediate between the ore and the final product of the mill. It was generally assumed that the solubility of yellowcake placed it in the category of Class D materials. This plus the fact that the uranium is non-enriched led health physicists to assume that the potential health hazards were a result of the uranium's chemical properties rather than its radiological properties. Bioassay programs have thus been limited to routine urine sampling at a weekly or monthly frequency. In most cases when a high reading was obtained, subsequent sampling within one or two days showed a rapid return to low levels, therefore tending to confirm the class D nature of the material. Two developments over the last few years have however suggested that modifications to this simple bioassay program may be necessary and practical. Firstly, a number of studies on the solubility of uranium mill products, from ore to yellow cake, in simulated lung fluid (Eidson A.F., Mewhinney J.A., 1980) have shown that some of the material is not class D, but class W or even Y. This raised the possibility that, while the urine levels rapidly decreased, indicating rapid excretion of the class D component, the W and Y components remained in the lung. Thus an unsuspected lung burden could have been accumulated. The second development, the ready availability of [in vivo] counting facilities with which to make direct measurements of uranium lung burdens, offered a means of confirming the hypothesis of unsuspected lung burdens. A study was therefore initiated to correlate lung burdens with urinary excretion. METHOD A total of 79 subjects from 3 uranium mills participated in the study. They were brought to the Ottawa laboratories of the Radiation Protection Bureau in groups of 4 or 6, over a period of several months. In Ottawa, [in vivo] thorax measurements were performed, and a urine sample collected. Each subject also brought with him a urine sample that had been collected the previous day. All samples were split, for analysis by both R.P.B. and the mill laboratory. [Concentrations of Uranium Dust] Results obtained by mills A, B and C for concentrations of uranium in air at various locations are given in table 1. Samples taken at mill B were obtained using continuous sampling with a midget impinger over a six hour period. Samples taken at mills A and C were 5-minute gravimetric samples. [Subject Selection] The subjects were selected to represent a wide range of work history in terms of both length of employment and type and location of job, as shown in table 2.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarize the current status of reagents used in the mineral industry plus present some current challenges and possible new technologies of the future. Table 1 lists the important families of reagents which, when taken together, constitute at least 95% of the current commercial reagent market. A very approximate estimate of the free world reagent market size in mineral applications is about 1.5 to 2.0 billion dollars (U.S.) using 1985 data. Obviously, to serve such a large market requires the effort of many different types of commercial supply sources. It is estimated that there are over 300 industrial firms in the free world that have a dedicated business/technical structure for supplying reagents related to the mining industry. There are a number of characteristics which are associated with the product families listed in Table 1. Understanding these characteristics helps to provide a realistic economic/technical basis for outlining future challenges in mining chemicals. 1.Essentially all of the products listed are old chemistry in the sense that the molecules have been known and manufactured for at least 25 years. This has not been a highly dynamic field of endeavor from the viewpoint of new product introduction. 2. The greater majority of the products listed can be viewed in commercial terms as "commodity" chemicals, that is, they are available from many sources and the pricing of a some- what generic product generally dominates differences in product quality or uniqueness. With commodity pricing, reagent suppliers significantly reduce research expenditures, loosen product quality somewhat if the applications of the reagents allow, etc. in order to be cost competitive.

This paper briefly reviews the historical development of the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace Process, which was first applied commercially to the treatment of qarnieritic ores in New Caledonia in the mid-fifties. It describes various technological improvements introduced, since, in industrial plants or developed in pilot facilities where a wide variety of nickel oxide ores has been treated success- fully over the years. Major categories of ores are characterized. The effect of their physical and chemical properties on their performance in the electric furnace is discussed. The relationships between ore composition, ferronickel grade and slag composition are analyzed and their effect on slag and metal tapping temperatures, nickel recovery, and electrode voltage are discussed.

Since 1990, the entire Romanian mining industry has suffered a major restructuring, i.e. technical and economic. The large majority of the remaining active mines are these with a chance for economic comeback. This is also the case for the mines that belong to MINVEST Deva Company; most of the mines are closed, and are waiting to be reclaimed. The authors present the closing procedures of the former copper mining perimeters managed by MINVEST. It is well known that pollutants of concern for the environment must be monitored to obtain reliable information on the quality of ambient conditions and to minimize their impact on the environment. Consequently, the monitoring problems during the closing procedures will be presented.

The mining complex being analyzed consists of four mines and two processing plants located in an area where there are several existing modes of transportation. Figure 1 shows a map of the general layout of the four proposed mines and the two existing processing plants. The mines are identified by the numerals "I" through "IV" and the plants by the letters "A" and "B". A proposed overland conveyor would collect the product from all four mines and convey it to Processing Plant A. Alternate transportation systems are as follows: Railroad transport from Mines I and II to Plant B; Highway trucking from Mines I and II to Plant A; Off-the-road truck haulage from Mine III to Plant B and from Mine IV to Plant A. River transportation from the mines to the processing plants was not considered in this study under the assumption that the high capital investments for the loading and unloading facilities, in addition to difficult traffic problems, would make this mode of transportation unattractive.

In situ stress on the scale of a tunnel or mine may be distorted by geologic structures. The resulting variations in in situ stress have a direct bearing on the potential for mining-induced seismicity. New evidence collected from the Lucky Friday mine by US Bureau of Mines researchers, as well as a review of previous case studies, demonstrated that in situ stress variations affect the [spatial] distribution of mining-induced seismicity. Although overcore stress measurements have been useful in these studies. they are too expensive and, depending, on conditions, may be too difficult to collect. However, information on borehole and raise breakouts: deformation of mine openings: and patterns of seismicity, ground-control problems and rock-burst damage can be used to build a stress database. In conjunction with maps of mine structure and geology and models of rockmass behavior, this database can then be used to build a map of in situ stress variations. Such a map could provide a means of anticipating patterns of mining-induced seismicity and. Thus, could be the basis for planning appropriate measures to ameliorate rock-burst hazards.

Homestake Mining Company has identified a significant native sulfur resource at its Cinnabar Canyon prospect in Mono County, California. Elemental sulfur occurs as replacements, fracture coatings and breccia fillings in a thick sequence of Miocene-Pliocene intermediate volcanic rocks. The deposit extends along a northwest trending regional fault and measures approximately 900' in width, at least 1800' in length, and has a thickness in excess of 200'. The deposit lies approximately 150' below the surface and is covered by a silicified cap of volcaniclastic strata. The deposit has been delineated by rotary and core drilling. Utilizing a grade cutoff of 5% elemental sulfur, the delineated deposit has a probablelpossible resource of 16.1 million tons of ore averaging 17.9% elemental sulfur containing 2.57 million long tons sulfur. Assay grades within the resource area range up to 40% sulfur over a 40-foot intercept.

Newmont Gold operates the Carlin East underground, one of four underground gold mines the company operates in northeastern Nevada. Carlin East began full production in early 1995. The mine's current rate is 900 t/d (1,000 stpd), producing about 4.6 t/a (150,000 oz/year). About 125 hourly and salaried personnel are employed at the project for its estimated six-year mine life. Two mining methods are currently used at the Carlin East Mine. Longhole stoping with cemented backfill accounts for 70% of the total mine production. Conventional underhand drift and cemented fill accounts for the balance of the daily tonnage. In December 1996. Newmont purchased an AC-Eickhoff ET-210 roadheader. The machine went into service in mid-June 1997. It is used in longhole Stope topcut development and cut-and-fill production at a rate of 225 t/d (250 stpd)

The disposal of phosphatic clays has presented a problem to the phosphate industry since the mining of phosphate rock first began. As the flotation process was introduced in the late 1920's, the problem of clay disposal was increased significantly since clay is present in proportionally greater quantities in reserves yielding flotation concentrates. Because of their physical character and the tremendous surface area per unit volume, these clays have the characteristic of retaining large volumes of water as they are slurried during processing. The phosphatic clays with which we are dealing consist primarily of apatite, wavellite and montmorillonite. In the beneficiation process, we remove the -150 mesh material as waste. However, the particles are essentially smaller than -325 mesh, and more than 70% are smaller than three microns. The disposal of clay and the recovery of a portion of the water require settling areas with a capacity ranging up to 2 cubic feet for each cubic foot of phosphate matrix mined. According to a recent study by the Bureau of Mines, the average cost for disposal of these wastes is 24.5 cents per ton of, product (U. S. Bureau of Mines Circular 8404). This is a major cost of phosphate rock production.

It is more than ten years since the first fully automated process using a computer started operation. Computer control has become common in a number of process industries, yet in spite of the tremendous incentives which ere present, there are only a few computer installations in the mining industry and none of these has announced successful control of a process. Recognizing that one of the reasons for this slow progress is the lack of adequate mathematical models of the various processes involved, the author's company started a project in the summer of 1966 to develop such models. It was early recognized that the existence of a major disturbance input, in the form of the mineral composition of the feed prevents most flotation plants from attaining a steady state condition. This makes the custom¬ary method of developing correlations from steady state plant data inapplicable and requires a more fundamental approach.

Land use impact assessment for mining is time- consuming and expensive. Because of mining’s impact on biodiversity, land use assessment methods that evaluate biodiversity are important for mining land use impact assessments. Remote sensing, in particular satellite multispectral sensing platforms such as Sentinel‑2 and the Landsat mission series, have been used to assess and quantify biodiversity through proxy variables such as NDVI (Peña-Lara et al., 2022). The objective of this paper is to present results of a comparative study of land use and biodiversity based on multispectral satellite observations and production data from copper and cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We quantify the relationship between different spectral bands and vegetative indices and the production data provided by the mining companies and measure correlations. The results suggest that remote sensing could be a cost- effective means of assessing biodiversity impacts of mining.

We believe we have a dynamic program that will help our vast coal resources to find their proper place in the U. S, economy. The present coal research activities of the Bureau are conducted in three organizational subdivisions: Minerals Research, Mineral Resource Development, and Health and Safety. All investigations are carried out in Bureau research facilities located in different sections of the country, Since its creation by the Organic Act of 1910 and subsequent amendments, the Bureau has worked closely with the coal industry--first by providing assistance in mine safety for anthracite and bituminous coal mining, and since that time, in providing information on conservation, safety, mining, preparation, and utilization.

The effect of sample storage in argon and in air on kinetics of oxidation of pyrite from a coal source was studied using accelerated weathering test in laboratory columns. Prior to the weathering tests the samples were crushed, ground, and stored for various time periods in argon and air. The results showed a dramatic difference in the rate of oxidation of the aged samples. The differences were interpreted based on the hypothesis that the aging of pyrite led to the formation of surface coatings which changed with time. The significance of these results in pyrite/reagent interactions in flotation and in evaluating the acid mine drainage potential of pyritic waste materials is discussed.

INTRODUCTION Historical mining activities in the Robinson Mining District, in the Egan Range of east-central Nevada (White Pine County), resulted in five open pits (Veteran, Tripp, Liberty, Ruth, and Kimbley Pits), several large mine-waste dumps, and numerous underground workings developed for copper, zinc, gold, lead-silver, and manganese (Figure 1). Groundwater percolating downward through the copper sulfide ores produced a blanket-like supergene zone enriched in copper, which has been one of the primary objectives of mining since the early part of this century. To obtain permits for future operation, an EIS was conducted that evaluated future pit- lake chemistry, groundwater quantity and quality issues, transport of water and solutes subjacent to a proposed tailings impoundment, and the potential for waste dump acidification. AREA HYDROGEOLOGY The mine area is on a ridgeline draining to the Steptoe Valley to the east and to the White River Valley to the West. Precipitation in the Robinson Mining District ranges from a low of 15 cm (6 in.) per year in the valley to more than 50 cm (20 in.) per year in the surrounding mountains. Evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation, leading to a net loss of water from the basin as either surface flow or underflow to the north at Currie, Nevada (Eakin et al. 1967). The White River Valley, which lies to the south and west of the mine area, includes approximately 4,200 km2 (1,620 mi2) of the upper part of the Colorado River Basin. This valley is 112 km (70 mi) long, 32-48 km (20-30 mi) wide, and like Steptoe Valley, evaporation and transpiration exceed precipitation (Maxey and Eakin 1949). The local groundwater flow system in the Robinson Mining District and the proposed mine area is dominated by two main components: (1) a groundwater mound or high between the Ruth Pit and Murry Springs, and (2) a shallow groundwater flow divide that follows the ridge crest south of Ruth, which contains the Veteran and Tripp pits. Besides the alluvium, the main hydrostratigraphic units controlling groundwater flow are limestones, shales, and sandstones, along with the intrusive quartz monzonite stocks. Many investigators conducted surface force measurements between hydrophobic surfaces in water, and observed attractive force that was substantially stronger than the van der Waals attractive force. The excess force was appropriately referred to as “hydrophobic force”, for which many different theories have been put forth by numerous investigators. In an earlier publication (Yoon and Ravishankar, 1996), it was suggested that the hydrophobic force maybe due to the interaction between the large dipoles created by the surfactants adsorbing on solid surfaces in patches (or domains). In the present work, a mathematical model has been developed to further elaborate the theory.

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. In the past 100 years in the mining industry, many references are made to the "Widow Makers", 'Miners Con" and many other derogatory names related to physical hazards. They reflect the lack of understanding of the problem facing the early day miner. Workers were enticed, in some cases, to take a chance against a medical question mark that could not be explained by the doctors of those early days. The optimism of the mining man and the challenge of work led him to believe that the physical results could not apply to himself and only applied to some of his fellow workers. Much of the time, to his dismay, he found that he had lost to the game of chance. As medical knowledge improved and mining management began to understand the effects of conditions in the mines and beneficiation plants, steps were taken to alleviate or eliminate the health hazards that were present, The organizations engaged in mining that did not take an active interest in employee health found themselves to eventually be placed in the position of being forced to take action by Federal and State legislation. We find ourselves in the 1970's on the threshold of a new era where the general public is concerned vociferously about "their" environment and the industry feels the governmental controls more strongly than ever before. It can be said that in the past 100 years we have advanced from the "Widow Makers" of the 1870's to the "Retirement Makers" of today. The difficulties of the early days in underground mining were of times compounded in the beneficiation plants above ground. As late as the 1950's some crushing and milling installations in the United States were operating under environmental conditions that complied to the then existing legislation but were below the health level sought by conscientious management. The Mission Concentrator Crushing Plant was designed in 1959 and placed in operation in July, 1961.
