At the beginning of the previous chapter, variation in the types of room-and-pillar stopes were briefly identified so that the reader could begin to understand the extensive application of this mining system. These same variations will be reviewed and elaborated upon in this chapter while discussing the methods by which the material is extracted. FULL-FACE SLICING BY DRILLING AND BLASTING When the entire mineralized thickness is taken in one pass of mining, it is known as full-face slicing. There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the back. Theoretically, there is no limit as to how high the face could be in a single pass. But there are practical limitations to equipment size, pillar stability, and control of local loose slabs on the face, roof, and pillars that dictate current practices. The range of face height of the 15 typical room- and-pillar mines covered in Table 8 (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) from the Dravo report, 1974 was 1.7 m (5.5 ft) to 9.8 m (32.1 ft), the average being 5.2 m (17.1 ft). In the Gaspe copper mine, Murduchville, Que., the drill jumbos were constructed with an extendable tower for full-face mining up to 15.2 m (49.9 ft) if necessary. However, a more common practice at that mine is to take the ore in multiple slices (Hall, 1959). In many metal mines the normal practice when starting stoping is to drive a single development drift into the ore zone a distance that will allow at least four or five rooms to be opened on each side of the initial drift. Since this opening will probably serve as the main haulage drift, it should be kept as straight and as level as possible. As to the other criteria for the stope developments, it might be well at this point for the mine planner to review the remarks presented earlier (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) on drifts, entries, and crosscuts for production. After the initial drift is driven, it should be slabbed to the full room width if it is not that wide already. Next, the future pillars should be marked on the ribs and the rooms driven between them. If the ore extends beyond the length of the initial drift and is to be mined in the normal sequence of mining, care should be taken in a random room-and-pillar system to see that the extension of the initial roadway remains straight. If pillar "spotting" is left to the shift foreman or to the miners, they probably will not realize the importance of maintaining a uniform pillar line next to the roadway, and of keeping the line straight. Invariably, a pillar will end up in the middle of the future drift extension resulting in a "dogleg" in a possible main haul- age road. While this error is not catastrophic, too much weaving in and out of pillars will certainly slow down future production haulage and needlessly increase costs. Face or Breast Drilling and Blasting Practices To drill and blast the initial advances into the rock, usually some form of cut pattern must be used. In room-and-pillar mining, when a pattern is drilled in a face and that face is the only exposed surface to which all of the rock must be broken, the pattern is known as a "face round" or "swing." The face to which the rock must be broken is referred to as a "free face." Thus the most common way to advance a room into virgin rock with only one free face is by drilling swings. If, after breaking around a pillar, taking down back, or taking up bottom, there is a second (or third) face exposed, a group of holes drilled nearly parallel to a free face and breaking to it is known as a "slab round" or "slabbing." In some mining districts it is also known as "slashing." Obviously, because two faces exposed offer less resistance to fragmentation than a single face, slabbing requires less drilling and fewer explosives than required to break the same tonnage with the same degree of fragmentation with swings. Silicon oxynitride, Si2N20, has many of the intrinsic properties of a potential high temperature engineering ceramic material. Some of these properties are similar to those of silicon nitride, which has been more intensively studied. However, although silicon nitride ceramics are approaching a state of microstructural refinement for various engineering applications, silicon oxynitride has received little attention. This has been mainly due to a lack of an economical and reproducible method of producing pure crystalline Si2N2O. Several reports exist on the preparation of crystalline Si2N2O from SiO2 and Si3N4, yet very little kinetic data exist. Even less is known about the carbothermic reduction of SiO2 in a nitrogen atmosphere to produce Si2N2O. In this paper, a review of the properties and methods of preparing silicon oxynitride will be presented. In addition, results obtained by reactively sintering SiO2 and Si3N4 will be discussed. Underground production of coal by longwall methods has increased significantly in the last few years and will very likely continue to: increase. There are several reasons for this. First, as mining moves into seams having greater overburden, roof exposure must be reduced since support will become' increasingly expensive. Secondly, the growing demand for coal has forced the coal industry to seek alternative, more productive, coal mining methods. In addition, the longwall method greatly simplifies the underground ventilation network. This paper addresses itself to the design of longwall development headings, particularly to those of the United States where multiple development headings are required by law. The most burdensome problem encountered in many longwall mining installations is deterioration of the tailgate due to the combined effect from, the active longwall gob and the old gob made by mining the previous panel.1 Portions of the tailgate entry are sometimes closed to such a degree that extensive repair work is necessary to keep the entry in usable condition. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a study in progress which combines field measurements with numerical model analysis to reduce the cost of maintaining tailgate entries in longwall mining systems.

1.1 INTRODUCTION When underground mining involves total extraction, it induces overburden strata movements. If not properly planned it causes surface subsidence and affects surface environmental conditions. Total extraction usually refers to longwall mining and room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. Surface subsidence has long been a subject of intensive research for scientists all over the world and considerable achievements have been obtained. However due to its difficulties and complicated nature, research into overburden movement has been thus far incomplete as compared to that into surface subsidence. Since surface subsidence is a manifestation of the results of overburden movement, the processes and mechanisms of overburden movement must be fully understood in order to establish the mathematical prediction models of surface subsidence. In this chapter the processes of overburden movement and its zones of movement in the overburden will be discussed. 1.2 PROCESSES OF OVERBURDEN MOVEMENT When total extraction is used, it produces a large void in the coal seam and disturbs the equilibrium conditions of the surrounding rock strata. The roof strata bend downward while the floor heaves. When the excavated area (or gob) expands to a sufficient size, the roof strata will cave. As a result, the overlying strata continue to bend and break until the piles of the fallen rock fragments are sufficiently high to support the overhanging strata. At this tie the overhanging strata no longer cave, but bend and rest on the underlying strata. Strata bending and subsidence develop upward until reaching the surface and forming a subsidence basin. The whole overburden strata and the surface subsidence basin will further go through a period of compaction and gradually become stabilized. Current knowledge regarding the process of overburden movement has been derived from several sources. One is the direct observation of the mined sections and their surfaces, another from field monitoring of strata movements in the overburden, and others from computer modeling and scale modeling in the laboratory. For example, Figs. 1.1 and 1.2 show the results of a borehole monitoring experiment (Borehole B-2) using the full profile borehole inclinometer and full profile borehole extensometer for lateral displacements and vertical subsidence, respectively (Conroy and Gyarmaty, 1983). The panel, 400 ft wide by 5000 ft long and 630 ft deep, was extracted from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam which had an average thickness of 54 in. The face advanced from east to west. Curve A in Fig. 1.1 shows the inclination of the borehole when it was 45 ft ahead of the face at Position A (i.e., on the solid coal side). The total deviation of the borehole was 1/7000. The first shear movement occurred at 130 ft above the coal seam and appeared to have occurred along the bedding plane with large contrast of rock strata on both sides, i.e., sandstone vs. shale. When the face had passed the borehole 79 ft at Position B, the borehole deformed to assume a bow shape with a maximum deviation of 2.8 in. from the center line. Numerous shearing planes occurred and extended further upward. When the face had passed the borehole by 75 ft at position C, strata subsidence was measured. Fig. 1.2 shows that a strata separation as large as 4 ft occurred at 40 to 100 ft above the coal seam. Above this level, the strata subsided more uniformly with bedding separations within 1 to 2 in. Another example is the longwall mining with complete caving in the Soviet Union's Karaganda Coalfield (Kolebaeva, 1968). The coal seam was 6 ft thick and 154 ft deep. The immediate roof was the fine-grained sandstone interbedded with coarse-grained sandstone. Above this, there was sandy shale and shale. In order to monitor the process of overburden movement, 15 stations were established in a borehole (Fig. 1.3). The elevations of those stations were measured when the face was at various distances from the borehole. Fig. 1.3 shows the movement history of each station. For convenience of comparison, the movement history of each station was plotted on a common reference point as shown in Fig. 1.4. Clearly, the movements of strata from Station # 1 to #6 were nearly simultaneous, i.e., they behaved as a single unit. The strata from Station #7 to # 15 had differential separations, the maximum of which was 40 in. As the face passed by and moved away, strata separations in general reduced gradually. But strata separation between Stations #12 and #13 remained the same until the end of the monitoring period. The total bed separation between Station #7 and # 15 reached 11 in., approximately 18% of seam thickness, when the face was 132 ft beyond. Based on the above observations, the author developed a conceptual model of overburden movement due to underground longwall mining (Fig. 1.5). The above-mentioned two case studies illustrated that subsidence in the overburden strata propagates upward and subsidence velocity decreases from the bottom to the top. When the subsidence velocity at the surface reaches the maximum value, the subsidence velocity at the bottom portion of the overburden strata has decreased considerably and the strata have begun to compact. Bed separation occurs within a certain distance above the coal seam and reduces from the bottom to the top. When the face has moved away, bed separation reduces gradually, so that eventually some beds completely close and others partially close. Bed separation reaches the highest level when the subsidence velocity at the surface is at its maximum value. For instance in Fig. 1.4 surface subsidence velocity was maximum when the face was 38 to 44 ft past the point. At this time the total bed separation was maximum. Overall the strata directly above the opening are subjected to tension in the vertical direction. But above a certain level, all strata move nearly simultaneously. There is also significant shear movement along some bedding planes. 1.3 ZONES OF MOVEMENT INTHEOVERBURDEN After the extraction of a longwall panel or room and pillar section of sufficient width the strata in the overburden are subjected to various degrees of movement from the bottom to the top. According to the movement characteristics, the damaged overburden can be divided into four zones (Fig. 1.6). Caved Zone. After the extraction of coal, the immediate roof caves irregularly and fills up the void. The strata in this zone not only lose their continuity completely, they also lose their stratified

Mica is a generic term that applies to a group of complex aluminosilicate minerals that have a sheet or plate-like structure and with different chemical compositions and physical properties. All micas form flat six-sided monoclinic crystals with remarkable cleavage parallel to the direction of the large surfaces, which permits them to be split into optically flat films; as thin as 1µm in thickness in some cases (Rajgarhia, 1987). Some micas are more easily split than others. For example, muscovite mica found in pegmatites is more easily split into thin films than is phlogopite. Mica found in mica schist is not as easily delaminated as mica found in weathered pegmatites. According to Dawson (1 949), the commercially important mica minerals are: Muscovite-potassium mica (colorless to pale green and ruby) Biotite-magnesium-iron mica (dark brown to black) Phlogopite-magnesium mica (pale yellow to dark brown) Vermiculite-hydrated biotite or magnesium-iron-mica (bronze yellow flakes) Lepidolite-potassium-lithium mica (pale lilac to deep purple) Some micas of less importance are: Zinnwaldite-lithium-iron mica (gray to smoky brown) Roscoelite-vanadium-potassium-magnesium mica (various shades of green and brown) Mica, principally muscovite, is widely used for industrial applications because of its exceptional physical, chemical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties (Table 1). Phlogopite and vermiculite follow muscovite in importance. Biotite finds very little commercial application at the present time. Commercially, mica is used in a number of forms. These forms and their description follow: Sheet mica refers to books of mica either mined from hard rock (pegmatites) or from loosely consolidated clayey material formed from the weathering of pegmatites and alaskites. These books can be readily split into thin film or splittings with specific thicknesses ranging from 0.0031 to 0.10 mm (Davis, 1985). Quality sheet mica is graded into 10 quality classifications (Tables 2 and 3). Books of mica that are flawed with excess inclusions, cracks, or folds (A mica) are called scrap mica and are either ground into commercial products by a dry or wet process. Built-up mica was developed in 1894 as a result of the cost and scarcity of sheet mica, and because many satisfactory electrical parts could be made from it (Preston, 1971). This type mica is formed by layering pieces of mica splittings upon one another and binding them together with inorganic or organic binders. These sheets are then pressed together under high temperature. Mica for this process is produced from pieces of sheet mica too small to be punched into electrical parts (Davis, 1985). Reconstituted mica is mica paper produced by forming a mat of very thin delaminated flakes of scrap mica. This mat is usually impregnated with an organic binder, but is also available unimpregnated. It is dried at 110°C. The mica for this process is either produced from the trimmings of a sheet mica operation or from blocks of A type mica (Davis, 1985, Chapman, 1983). Ground mica constitutes by far the largest use of mica, both quantitatively and application wise. It is produced by grinding and sizing scrap mica (also mica concentrate) obtained from five sources, 1) trimming from sheet mica, 2) A type mica blocks, 3) as a byproduct of spodumene and feldspar mining, 4) weathered pegmatites and alaskites, and 5) metamorphic schists. Synthetic mica is produced by crystal growth in a slowly cooled melt of accurately proportioned chemical oxides. Extended cooling times at a specific viscosity result in larger crystals. Many different micas have been formed by this process; however, fluorophlogopite is the most common.

The chemistry and structure-activity relationships for four new classes of sulfide mineral and precious metals collectors developed recently are discussed in this paper. These collector classes are alkoxycarbonyl alkyl thionocarbamates and thioureas, dialkyl (or diaryl) monothiophosphates and dialkyl monothiophosphinates. The main emphasis will be to highlight the differences between collectors and their affinities for various minerals on the basis of data on kinetics of adsorption on pure minerals, natural ore flotation and microscopy of flotation concentrates. The mechanism of interaction of these collectors with sulfide minerals is also discussed with the available data on the FTIR and solution chemistry studies.

"From monitoring gas levels and air quality in coal mines to protection from collisions for large vehicles at mine sites, SICK offers a wide range of sensors and systems to improve safety and to monitor potentially dangerous situations. SICK offers solutions for the analysis and monitoring of underground coal mining atmospheres. These systems supply the coal mine operator valuable safety and ventilation information, as well as data which identify and monitors atmospheres of those production areas within the mine which may or may not be worked, such as Goafs and sealed areas. Underground coal mines contain dangerous gases, which must be monitored and controlled in order to allow productive mining operations to take place and to minimize the risk of explosion. Underground mines are a potentially dangerous place for mine workers. These are the main reasons for using Tube bundle systems SICK has had great success in selling these systems into the Australian and New Zealand Markets and this is helped by the strong drive for mine safety from both the Mine Owners and the Regulatory bodies charged with the responsibility of ensuring Mine Regulations are met. The Australian mining industry uses Tube Bundle Systems at almost all underground sites, even after mining has ceases and the mine is placed in care and maintenance. Sick has been working in international markets for some time now but has had limited success in selling Tube bundle Systems to these markets. However in recent times there has been raised interest in Tube Bundle from China, India and Turkey as these countries strive to improve mine productivity and lessen the risk of explosion or Spontaneous Combustion. Our lack of penetration into International Coal markets has been very much based on the perceived cost of the system, not the benefits to safety and productivity. Unless a mine has had an event such as spon com or a Methane explosion they rarely consider the very low level measurement capability (20 PPM CO & 100 PPM CH4) or the long term trending benefits of the Tube Bundle system. It is only after a catastrophic event the System is considered. Real Time or electrochemical Sensors are commonly used to monitor the Mine Atmosphere, the real problems of methane build up or potential Spon Com in Goafs and sealed areas cannot be monitored using Real Time Sensors as the electrochemical cell deteriorates after approx. 12 months and in sealed areas these cells cannot be maintained or replaced. Whilst the Technique of Tube Bundle Systems is quite old SICK have spent many years redesigning the Tube Bundle System into a cost effective and real value for money product. The system uses state of the art sampling and highly accurate Infra-Red wide Spectrum Analysers."

The importance of planning ventilation systems in modern coal mines cannot be overemphasized. Interconnected entries, airflows around and through mined-out areas, leakages through stoppings and other control devices, and the use of multiple fans all contribute to the complexity of ventilation network analysis. Fortunately, the availability of computer programs (e. g., Didyk et al., 1978; McPherson, 1966; Wang and Saperstein, 1970) has greatly reduced the difficulty in net- work analysis. However, to obtain a suitable solution to the practical problem, a ventilation engineer has to simulate various conditions based on the proposed ventilation layouts and the capacities of available fans. It is often a trial-and-error process, although engineering knowledge and judgement are required.

Discussion by Stephen Semeniuk Discussion As a valuator and SME member, I view Ross D. Lawrence's position as based on unproven and faulty assumptions made with regard to the pragmatic evidence presented in his paper. Moreover, his call for the inclusion of all mineral resources in discounted cash flow valuations is redundant, if not irrelevant, as there are procedures that already take all classes of mineralization into consideration for valuation purposes. In my experience as a valuator, I find that Canadian securities regulators are more than accommodating in allowing any valuations of mineral properties to be based on cash flow calculations. In other business areas, the same regulators usually reject discounted cash flow valuations of projects or businesses with no operating history. Instead, the regulators prefer valuations to be based on other transactions tested in the marketplace. Valuations based on actual market transactions are less subjective than discounted cash flow calculations and/or the capitalization of arbitrary, untested or undemonstrated earnings projections. In the mining and minerals sector, such projections may be made by persons not qualified to make such projections. In support of this statement, I direct readers to the article "Valuation of mineral properties which do not contain exploitable reserves" by Lionel C. Kilburn, which appeared in the August 1990 issue of the CIM Bulletin. To quote from the article: "Value of a mineral property depends basically upon metal prices, recoverable grades, mining and metallurgical practices, commodity supply and demand, and political-economic conditions, all of which vary with time. Five fields of expertise influence the value of a mineral property: •geological engineering, •commodity markets, •financial markets, •stock markets and •mineral property markets. The skills of geologists and engineers properly apply to the first field of expertise. Knowledge and consideration of the other four fields is important, but such advice is more properly sought from marketing experts, economists and stockbrokers." Securities regulators have created no hardship for valuators by excluding unsubstantiated resources in discounted cash flow valuations. In the field of engineering, best design practices apply. A margin of safety is built into the design criteria for any new equipment or structure that will exceed normally expected load levels and stresses, even though such considerations imply higher front end costs. In accounting, the comparable operating principle is conservatism. It explains why, for balancesheet presentation purposes, inventory is stated at cost or market, whichever is the lowest value. Similarly, when the engineering or geoscience-based valuator plays in the field of finance, the rules of accounting and applied economics apply. Regulators in their skepticism of income-based valuations are in tune with similar views already expressed in mining literature. To quote H. Van Tingley, in Mining Magazine, July 1996: "... the DCF method has inherent dangers when applied to undeveloped resources. Firstly, it presents an often-undeserved aura of accuracy. A DCF value is no more accurate than the least accurate of the assumptions incorporated into the calculation - and assumptions

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

Granitic Pegmatite deposits are the chief source of commercial feldspar, micas, lithium minerals, tantalum-columbium, beryl, and certain types of kaolin. The output from pegmatite mines in the United States is small compared to other mineral products in terms of bulk or value, and much of it comprises only minor metals and nonmetals. Nevertheless, pegmatite minerals play a vital part in our domestic industrial economy, particularly in the ceramic and electrical industries. Numerous special purpose uses also are important, even though they require small quantities of raw materials. In recent years, realizing the potential importance of the pegmatite minerals, the U.S. Geological Survey, the United States Bureau of Mines, several state Bureaus of Mines, and a few private companies have carried on extensive programs of pegmatite studies in the New England and southeastern states, in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, in the Rocky Mountain region of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, and in various parts of Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. Currently, some of the pegmatite minerals such as micas and spodumene are selectively separated by the flotation process. To a lesser extent a few plants are selectively floating feldspar and quartz. Much of the credit for the above progress goes to the fine work done by U.S. Bureau of Mines (1), and companies such as Foote Minerals (2). Additional research efforts by the New Mexico Bureau of Mines (3) has successfully demonstrated selective separation of micas, beryl, spodumene, lepidolite, microlite, quartz and feldspar from a complex Pegmatite containing all these minerals. Since the nature of the mineralization of various valuable components of a pegmatite deposit is such that selective separation of some of these can be carried out at a coarse size using the Heavy Media Separation technique, it was felt that such a system should be investigated for selective preconcentration of their minerals. It was also felt that of all the :MS systems available, the DYNA WHIRLPOOL (DWP) device which allows a close control and adjustment of specific gravity should provide a means of achieving the above goal. Once the desired preconcentration of one or more of the pegmatite mineral assemblage is achieved, the available selective flotation techniques should provide effective recovery of various minerals into marketable products. This paper presents technical and economic aspects of selective preconcentration of some of the pegmatite minerals followed by selective flotation to produce marketable products.

1. INTRODUCTION In this section, precious metals are defined as gold, silver, and the platinum group metals comprised of platinum, palladium, iridium, osmium, and rhodium. If the first three years of the 1970's are the criteria, gold, silver, and platinum seem destined for a bright future. Gold advanced in price from the historic figure of $35 established in 1934 to over $100 per oz (1973). For the five years 1966 to 1970, silver consumption exceeded production by about 50%. The silver price appears to be definitely on the uptrend, and a price of over $3 per oz seems probable. On this basis (at 1964 costs) the United States has an estimated 5 billion oz of unmined silver. The fresh burst of interest in platinum with a surge of renewed price strength (end of 1972) is due to the activity in the automobile emission control area, where platinum re¬mains the front runner in the catalyst area. Some international financial experts believe that governments will not rush into reform of the monetary system, and "Special Drawing Rights" (SDR's) will gain increased standing as international mone¬tary reserve assets. Gold will continue to be reviewed as the ultimate store of value and will remain the global monetary base. Devaluation of the U.S. dollar caused by imbalance of import payments over ex¬ports is the basic reason that the price of gold will likely remain above the $90 per oz figure for the balance of the 1970's. Gold and silver usually occur intimately associated, and recovery methods are often closely related; however, they were assigned sepa¬rate chapters, because the major production of each metal is from ore deposits classified as either gold or silver. For example, the gold ore occurrences in South Africa, the world's leading gold producer, have a ratio of gold to silver of approximately 10 to 1. The ores at the Homestake Mine, Lead, S.D., the largest U.S. gold producer, are predominantly gold with a ratio to silver of approximately 5 to 1. Silver in each example is a byproduct. By this same classification, the largest U.S. silver producers are the silver ores of the Sunshine, Galena, and Lucky Friday mines in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho. However, the largest single-mine silver producer in the Free World is the Kidd Creek Mine at Timmins, Ont., where the occurrence is with sulfides of copper, lead, and zinc. Thus, the major gold production of the world is derived from those ores classified as gold ores; whereas, less than one-half of the silver production is from silver ores, and only a small percentage of the silver production is from gold ores. 2. GOLD Gold, the noblest of metals, has been mined for thousands of years. Its chemical symbol, Au, is derived from the Latin "aurum," meaning "shining dawn." A precious substance because it is one of the rarest metals, it has unique physical properties: it does not tarnish; it exceeds all other metals or alloys in malleability and ductility; it is a good conductor of electricity and is one of the most nonreactive metals. Its greatest strength is its indestructibility. It is the only metal mined at depths exceeding 10,000 ft. Since the early 1800s, its chief role has been as a medium of exchange, providing the basis for interna¬tional trade. In the past 15 years, however, gold has emerged as a useful industrial commodity. This role has been fortified by the estab¬lishment of a two-tier pricing system which maintains monetary gold prices at an established U.S. Government price, with industrial gold being priced higher by the free-market system. Occurrences and Production Native gold furnishes most of the world's production, since gold forms stable natural compounds with few other elements. Neverthe¬less, the metal is widespread with traces of it found in seawater and in the ashes of plants and animal material. Next to the native metal, the tellurides have been the most important gold-bearing minerals; these include calaverite, krennerite, slyvanite, hessite, and nagyagite. Native gold is invariably alloyed with more or less silver, but it is exceptional to find any other metal in the alloy. It is found in veins associated with quartz, calcite, alunite, other gangue minerals, and with various sulfides. Sulfide minerals in order of frequent associa¬tion are: pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, tetrahe¬drite, and pyrrhotite. Small amounts of metallic gold are commonly disseminated through such sulfides. When considerable amounts of silver occur in gold, the mineral electrum is formed. In a few deposits, gold and mercury form natural amalgam. Native mercury is formed by weathering from cinnabar and other mercury minerals. Among the minerals sometimes mistaken for gold, pyrite, marcasite, and especially chalcopyrite may be men¬tioned. The flakes of biotite and other micas, especially when partially oxidized, also may imitate it closely. World gold reserves never have been estimated carefully. Esti¬mates indicate that present world reserves approximate I billion oz, of which about 60% occurs in South Africa and 20% in the USSR. World gold output is dominated by South Africa which produces two-thirds of the world's production from reserves that are adequate to maintain existing output levels. South African gold output comes from approximately 50 large underground operations that mine and mill 70 to 80 million tons of ore annually to recover 30 to 32 million oz of gold. The USSR is the second largest gold producer, followed by Canada and the United States (see Table 1). Gold production in the United States and Canada rose to high levels in the 1930's, following the increase in price from $20.67 to $35 per oz and with an abundance of good labor due to depression in other industries. Production of over 10 million oz in 1940 was behind only that of South Africa. World War II caused a precipitous drop in gold output due to the imposition of War Production Board Limitation Order L-208 issued in October 1942, which caused over 9,000 gold mines in the United States to shut down, most of which never reopened. The U.S. Treasury, which suspended purchases of newly mined gold in 1968, had been the sole buyer of U.S. produced gold since 1934. This created the two-tier pricing system, and in March 1972 the President signed into law a bill authorizing a $3 increase in the official price of gold to $38 per oz. In February 1973 the President ordered a second devaluation of the dollar, amounting to about 10% which raised the official price to $42.22 per oz. The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

In addition to coalbed thickness and basic coal quality data, coal drill cores can produce design data for coal beneficiation processes. To generate design data, a coal drill core should be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and composition that represents (with the possible exception of top size) a raw coal process stream. Reducing a coal core with a crushing machine rarely accomplishes this representation. This investigation employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis to characterize the core in terms of first-order and zeroth-order break- age rate constants, which are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during handling. To reduce composition variables and conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores, the initial drop-shatter and dry-tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores. Then, cores from three coal beds, Illinois No. 6, Upper Freeport and Pocahontas No. 5, were tested. Comparison of a crushed drill core and a drill core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed.

Therefore, it can be said that beneficiation is now one of the processes inn the manufacturing of sand and gravel, It started some ten to twelve, years ago when the need for beneficiation made itself known, and when the manufacturers of sand and gravel producing machinery began to make equipment available to the industry.

In 1978, Ozark Lead Company made the decision to expand the capacity of its mine/mill complex by 33%. The objectives of the expansion were to (a) increase mine' production capacity by 1816 tonne/d(2000 TPD), (b) increase lead metal pro¬duction by 21,790 tonne/y (24,000 TPY) and to (c) construct new facilities and/or modify exis¬ting equipment to accomodate the increased pro¬duction. The intent of this paper is to give a brief explanation of the equipment installed and the overall production and metallurgical benefits-realized from this expansion. The expansion was completed in the second half of 1980 with all equipment debugging and fine tuning completed by the first' quarter of 1981. The concentrator modifications and improvements were basically restricted to four areas: (1) materials handling, (2) automation: of the mill grinding circuit, (3) the increase of flotation capacity, and (4) concentrate dewatering.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, performed a laboratory-scale investigation of technique for recovering silver from pregnant solutions generated in the hydrometallurgical treatment of complex base-metal sulfide concentrates with oxidizing chloride media. This provides a means for recovery and simplified reduction of accessory silver to metal from ions. The method consists of adding NaI or KI to the solution to precipitate AgI, which is then contacted with Na2S to produce Ag2S and to regenerate the iodide salt solution. Silver recoveries range from 99 pct with 20 pct excess iodide precipitant, to-92 pct when the theoretical stoichiometric amount of precipitant is employed. The Ag2S product can be reduced to silver metal by contact with aluminum chips in NaOH solution followed by purification with conventional fire refining techniques.

This paper will describe briefly the steps taken in the development of a Central Florida phosphate ore deposit from acquisition to mining. Further, the design and early operation of the mining and beneficiation facilities will be depicted. During the 1950's, with confidence in the continually increasing requirement for phosphate fertilizer materials essential for producing food, I'. R. Grace & Cc acquired the Hookers Prairie tract containing approximately 45 million metric tons o. (50 million short ton~ of potential phosphate rock product. In 1973, at a point when the Grace captive need for rock was being greatly enlarged by a planned doubling of its Bartow phosphate chemicals plant capacity, the decision was made to expand existing phosphate rock production by building a new mine and plant. The initial annual capacity was to be 2.3 million tons (2.5 million st); however, subsequent investigation pointed to a higher than estimated dragline operating factor 'and the forecast of annual capacity was set at 2.5 million tons (2.8 million st).
