The Howe Coal Company located in Leflore County, Oklahoma is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne Coal bed which ranges in thickness from 38" to 42" and dips approximately 7 degrees to the Northeast. The Lower Hartshorne bed lies within the Hartshorne sandstone in Oklahoma but is as much as 60 feet above this sandstone formation in Arkansas. This coal bed extends throughout the Arkansas Oklahoma coal basin, which is about 50 miles wide and 180 miles long and progresses from a semi anthracite in Arkansas to a low-volatile coal in the eastern part of the Oklahoma to a high-volatile coal in the western area. The Howe Mine #1 in the eastern area is mining a low-volatile bituminous coal which has been used as metallurgical coal since the early 1900's as evidence of Bee-hive coke ovens still remain near the town Howe, a few miles northwest of the mine site. The Howe Mine is the first mine in the area to use modern mining equipment, however, numerous punch mines have been worked along the outcrop south of the mine site dating from 1900 with the last closing in 1965. The coal characteristics of the Lower Hartshorne rival the Pocahontas seam in chemistry and coking qualities. This paper will be concerned with the preparation of the coal for the Japanese steel market. The three man crew necessary to operate the plant are the operator, the helper, and the equipment operator needed to feed the raw coal hopper. An additional equipment operator is available on the day shift for coal loading and moving the clean coal to the storage pile as the area under the clean coal belt is only large enough for 1 shifts production. We are at present running the plant on a 2 shift per day basis.

Following the completion of the 7,600 m primary access tunnel by Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) in April 1997, an exploratory East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was constructed at the Yucca Mountain Project over the proposed future repository block for high level nuclear wastes. The 2,681 m (8,796 LF) East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a re-built Robbins 5.000 m (16’-5”) hardrock TBM with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. Details of the unusual site and contract conditions will be discussed as well as with the unique tunnel equipment specified by the Owner. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project required eight months to complete.

Before discussing minicomputer software for the mineral industry, it is helpful to explain some of the computer program terminology. Most of the terms are the same as those applied to large computers. A computer system consists of a machine (hardware) with electronic and mechanical components and instructions (software) that define its operational logic and sequence. This logic is described by sets of commands grouped into programs. Each program has specific objectives related to the computer's operation and to production information from computer data that are input and processed. Software, therefore, is a general term applied to any type of computer program. Instructions to the computer are communicated through languages that convert logical and arithmetic statements into machine operations. The languages may consist of statements resembling mathematical or logical phrases understandable by humans, or they may be coded statements with no apparent resemblance to spoken language but readily understandable by the computer. Computers also translate higher level languages such as FORTRAN or COBOL into machine languages using other programs called Compilers. Programs written in these higher level languages are generally called source code. However, programs written in computer assembly language may also be called source code. The compiled version of the program after it has been translated by the compiler software is called object code. Programs used to "instruct computers how to be computers" are generally called systems software. They relate more to computer operation than to producing externally usable results. Programs producing information for many users-engineers, accountants, managers-are termed applications software. For the most part, applications software is the principal concern of the mineral industry. Programs are developed to fit user requirements as interpreted by programmers. Programs vary in quality, precision, efficiency, accuracy, and complexity, depending on programmer skills and abilities and programming decisions forcing design tradeoffs. A well written program should have speed, efficient use of available hardware resources, accuracy, and an inherently logical structure that aids documentation and subsequent modifications. Programs developed to fit specific requirements are termed customized software. A program organized and prepared for general commercial use is called a package, or a software package, and includes documentation for program use. A form of customized software that takes an existing program or package as its starting point and modifies it is called a customized package. A minicomputer program can be stored on computer cards, standard magnetic tape, magnetic cassette tape, floppy disk, or hard disk. The software purchaser or lessee may select one or more of these media when specifying a program in a software contract. Supporting documentation may include a listing of the program instructions linkages, hardware and storage resource requiremnents, flow charts, and programmer and user manuals. The purchaser must carefully make and clearly understand specifications for media and format of program delivery. This assures that delivered software is compatible with the intended hardware. Mineral Industry Attitudes Toward Computer Software The mining industry has traditionally been conservative concerning computer applications. Furthermore, large computer costs have made these systems accessible only to large companies, for the most part. But in the past few years, mining software systems developed at schools such as Pennsylvania State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute have gained wider acceptance in the mineral industry. More mining engineers now have academic training in computer application, and computer use is now more acceptable to the mining industry. Mining managers in decisionmaking positions are faced with a new generation of computer technology resulting from the rapid evolution of minicomputers. Not too long ago, manufacturers such as Digital Equipment Corp., Data General, and Hewlett-Packard were considered newcomers. They are now established companies. In addition, Apple, Radio Shack, Commodore, and others have emerged in the growing microcomputer industry. So the mine manager or mining executive now has more options. Mining Software is Limited Along with the rapid evolution in hardware development, much general purpose software is now being developed for minicomputers. The 1981 Apple Software Directory can be obtained for about $14; Radio Shack published the Application Software Source Book in three volumes for $1.95 each. Brochures describing software can be obtained for other minicomputer manufacturers by contacting local sales representatives. Hewlett-Packard software can be obtained and exchanged through HP user's groups. Manufacturers' programming staffs are generally concerned with developing applications software. In some instances, manufacturers will recommend software developed by their hardware users. Until now, however, software development for mining applications has been minimal. This should not be surprising, since software development traditionally lags hardware development by several years. A study of the application of mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation was carried out, focusing on efficiently activating mine tailings, reducing alkali consumption, decreasing curing time and improving compressive strength. Test results showed that unconfined compressive strength of 40 MPa was achieved. In addition, to elucidate the geopolymerization mechanism of mine tailings, microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy were used to investigate the microstructures and elemental and phase compositions of the reaction products. The findings of the present work provide a practical method for applying mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin trend comprises over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 50 million ounces of gold (Fig. 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are four major deposits; Post, Betze, Bluestar, and Genesis, plus numerous smaller deposits (Fig. 2). Betze is located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines; Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property; and Post on both Barrick and Newmont property.

High-calcium limestone has been intermittently produced from the Monarch quarry since the late 1800s. Initial production was used in sugar processing and for a smelter located near Salida, Colorado. During the 1920s, Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) began to exploit the deposit as a source of flux stone for its blast furnace steel operations at Pueblo. The deposit was operated for many years as a captive quarry by CF&I. In 1984, CF&I closed the quarrying operations at Monarch; flux stone was no longer required since the blast furnaces were taken off line in 198 1. In 1994, Colorado Lime Company, a subsidiary of United States Lime and Minerals, Inc. acquired the property. Limestone was mined from the Castle Butte Member of the Leadville Limestone (Lower Missippian). Some high- magnesium dolomite was also mined during WWII from the Redcliff Dolomite Member which directly underlies the Castle Butte. Past production was from both an upper and lower quarry at elevations ranging from 10,000 to 11,000 feet (3,048 m-3,353 m) mean sea level (m.s.1.). The reserves at Monarch quarry are in a dip slope deposit, occupying the northwest slope of Monarch Hill. The structural geology of the deposit is complex on both a region- al and mine scale. The reserves are located on the eastern limb of the Syncline Hill syncline. The beds on this limb of the structure strike to the northeast and dip to the northwest from 30 to 45 degrees. A major reverse fault separates the reserves into an upper and lower deposit. Numerous smaller normal and reverse faults cut the deposit, requiring a flexible mine plan. At the Monarch quarry, the Castle Butte Member con- sists of two stratigraphic units. The Upper unit (Mlu) is a thick-bedded, fine-grained crystalline dolomitic limestone from 0 to 300 feet (0-90 m) thick. The unit generally has an Si02 content of less than 4 percent. A bedded chert horizon and a karst horizon at the base of the unit locally raise the Si02 content as high as 20 percent. The underlying Quarry Stone unit (Mlq) is a light-gray, massive, bedded, calcilutite/micrite limestone from 90 to 130 feet (27-40 m) thick. The Quarry Stone unit is remarkably uniform chemically throughout it's entire thickness. Average analysis is CaC03 - 95 percent, MgC03 - 3.5 percent, and Si02 - 0.5 percent. The Footwall dolomite unit (Mld) of the Redcliff Member of the Leadville Limestone is a dark gray to black, blocky, medium-to-thick-bedded, calcilutite/micrite dolomite from 150 to 180 feet thick (46-55 m). The upper 100 feet (30 m) of the unit is a low-silica facies with an average Si02 content of less than 0.5 percent. MgC03 content is con- sistent at 39.8 percent throughout the upper 50 feet (15 m) of the unit but varies from 15 percent to 39.8 percent in the lower portion (50 to 100 feet [15-30 m]) of the low-silica facies. The lowest portion of the unit, 100 feet (30 m) to base of unit is high in silica and is not considered chemical grade. Current in-place, surface-minable reserves at the quarry are estimated to be 14 million short tons (st) (13 million metric tons [mt]) of limestone and 50 million st (45 million mt) of dolomite. A 1.4 million st (1.3 million mt) stockpile of finely crushed limestone is also present on the property. Colorado Lime is presently processing approximately 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per month from the crushed limestone stockpile. This material is pulverized and sold to underground coal mines for use as rock dust, some of this product is also used for environmental purposes. Limestone mining is scheduled to resume in spring of 2000.

A mathematical model of the industrial hydrocyclone based on fluid dynamics is a better alternative to the currently existing empirical models. The swirling-flow velocities are determined by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with an appropriate turbulence model. The solution of the momentum-balance equations yields the flow field inside the hydrocyclone which determines the particle trajectories, and subsequently the classification curve. The essence of the model is that the physical dimensions of the hydrocyclone and the slurry characteristics can be incorporated, and the influence of these parameters reflects on the flow predictions. The predicted tangential and axial velocities in a 250-mm hydrocyclone are in good agreement with the laser-Doppler velocimetry measurements. Finally, the predicted classification curves show good agreement with experimental data measured on a KREBS Dl0B hydrocyclone.

The concept of ultrasonic measurement was originally applied to marine operations. Sonar . . . standing for Sounding, Navigation and Ranging, was developed for military uses. Today Sonar has become very important to the fishing fleets and marine construction industries where its applications cover a wide range of uses our company, in addition to the inair ultrasonic equipment as discussed in this paper, is also deeply involved in marine sonar and works primarily with oceanographic research and fishing industries. Ultrasonics, by simple definition, are sound waves beyond the audible range of the human ear and are generally accepted to be waves over 20,000 cycles per second. When applied to level measurement, the principles of ultrasonics are basically quite simple. A sound pulse is initiated at a point in time and the time interval for the echo from that pulse to return can be interpolated into distance. The speed of sound in air under standard conditions is approximately 1,100 feet per second, or if converted into more meaningful information as related to distance measurement, the time required for sound to travel one foot round trip is 1.78 milliseconds. An early application for ultrasonic level monitoring equipment was in large grain elevators. Prior to ultrasonics, the common practice of inventory measurement was to have an employee walk around the top of these large grain elevators, which are often over 100 feet above ground level, and drop a weighted rope or chain down into the silo to determine the level of the grain. In July of 1974 a study team comprised of the authors was formed by the Department of the Interior. It was supported in part by funding from the National Science Foundation. The purpose of this study group was to visit coal mines and research and manufacturing facilities in England and Germany, to review the status of mining in these countries, and to identify mining technology which might have application to U. S. mining conditions. The duration of the visit was 18 days. The first week of the trip was spent in England. Time does not permit a complete recitation of the team's impressions but a few of the more interesting technologic developments will be discussed. Stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine through 1978 had been traditional overhand cut-and-fill, shrinkage or square set. High costs, low-productivity and safety concerns prompted the mine to search for and adopt a "bulk mining" technique as a primary stoping method. Blasthole stoping had been successful but it is very development intensive, and was not suitable for the mine's accelerated mining program. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping was selected, and today accounts for over 50% of ore production. Case histories representing both the successes and failures of VCR stoping in the mine are discussed.

Mine ventilation systems mostly are ventilation networks with fixed-quantity branches. The solution to the problem of ventilation networks with fixed-quantity branches is obtained by choosing the fixed quantity branches as chords and using Hardy Cross iteration method. The solution usually is feasible but may be not economical. This paper takes minimal annual ventilation electricity cost as an object, considering the power of main fans and boosters, natural ventilation pressures and resistances of regulators, and builds up a nonlinear programming model. A set of initial values of the nonlinear programming can be obtained by using Hardy Cross method, The MAP technique then used to find a set of local optimal solution The running procedure with a simple example is dicussed. Mine ventilation systems mostly are ventilation networks with fixed quantity branches. In the networks, air quantity of branches are generaly regulated by increasing branch resistance or air pressure. A comon approch to the of the networks with fixed quantity branches is to formulate it based on Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws and the solution is obtained by Hardy Cross iterative technique. The solution usualy is feasible but may be not economical. The optimal plan of air quntities regulation of mine ventilation network should be to make the solution satisfy both required quantity of work places and minimal ventilation operating cost. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce a new approch and computational experience of nonlinear programming of the optimal problem.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen's formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. Barite deposits in Nevada occur as bedded and vein-types along a north-northeastern -trending zone which parallels the Antler orogenic belt The bedded deposits of Nevada are the most significant economically. They are presently supplying eighty-five percent of the domestic barite production which is used primarily as a weighting agent in the petroleum drilling industry. The ore bodies are controlled both structurally and stratigraphically, occurring along regional and local structural breaks in siliceous eugeosynclinal rocks of mid-Paleozoic age. Evidence for origin of the barite includes sedimentary and hydrothermal features indicating that localization probably took place along fractures in the seafloor.

A comprehensive, site specific water management plan is of primary importance to the successful implementation, operation and decommissioning of any mining project. Formulation of a plan requires an orderly planning process consisting of identifying problems, establishing planning criteria based on the guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies, and an iterative procedure of identifying, investigating, and evaluating plan elements and alternative plans. A typical uranium surface mine operation consists of a mine pit or pits, spoil pile areas, crusher, processing plant, and tailings disposal area. A water control plan addresses the problems of diversion of natural runoff from undisturbed areas around the mine; and diversion, collection, and treatment of runoff from within the mine area. A water control plan is required to determine the location and size of appropriate control and detention structures; their cost; and the schedule for permit activity, design, and construction. The plan must be formulated to meet the requirements of both the State and Federal regulatory agencies.

In this paper, the results of bench scale testing of five different flotation processes to separate dolomite from phosphate are discussed. The effectiveness of each process interms of phosphate recovery and MgO content in the concentrate is used together with the reagent consumption as the basis of comparison. The water quality is found to play a major role in the performance of these processes. Effect of water hardness as well as other parameters are discussed.

The process design of a metallurgical plant follows logical steps, one built on another, to define the circuit requirements. The methodology used and documentation produced is the same for a pre-feasibility study, feasibility study or a complete design, regardless of the process complexity or the commodity. The only difference is the amount of detail developed at each stage. SRK Consulting, an independent, international consulting practice that provides focused advice and solutions to clients, mainly from earth and water resource industries, has consulted on many mining projects around the world. The company was formed in 1974 and now employs more than 1,600 professionals in more than 50 offices on six continents. According to SRK experts, the first element in plant design is collecting metallurgical testwork or operating data from an existing plant. The testwork identifies the process, the metallurgical recoveries and product qualities and establishes the process parameters for economic recovery of the commodity. Test samples must represent both the whole orebody and the feed over the life of the mine, showing the mineral?s variability. With this data available, the process design can be developed.

On average, one to two fatalities occur every year when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM). Proximity detection systems offer an effective means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and automatically disabling machine motion. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is expected to finalize a regulation that would require the use of proximity detection systems on all CMMs. Approximately one-fourth of all CMMs in use in the United States are already equipped with such a system. The use of these systems will save lives, not only by automatically preventing accidents but also by acting as a tool for educating miners and reinforcing safe work practices. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) have conducted a series of field evaluations to quantify the performance of these systems in an underground coal environment. These field evaluations measured the distance at which the warning and stop zones were activated. The technology provided consistent activation of the warning and stop zones under many of the conditions tested. However, some performance inconsistencies were observed which present opportunities to improve the reliability of proximity detection system technology. Some of the notable variables that caused significant changes in performance and should be considered in the design, implementation, and use of proximity detection systems include interaction with the trailing cable, performance changes during tramming, and orientation of the miner-worn component.

The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible. They can also provide insight into the types of motions that ground support elements are subjected to during large bump events. This was demonstrated for the case of a large bump in a Book Cliffs coal mine. Seismic information suggested the source mechanism to be normal slip on a fault. A model of that source showed initial dilation of the panel followed by dynamic compression and rebound ? consistent with underground observations. The initial dilation is important as it may allow slender standing support to shift or fall.

The pressure system of ventilation with large diameter bore holes has been very effective in the ventilation of two gaseous mines, the Olga No. 1 and No. 2 Mines in McDowell County, West Virginia. The No. 4 Pocahontas Coal Seam on the Olga property lies 580 feet below the valleys. The seam is very gaseous as well as dry and dusty, which makes good ventilation all the more essential. Irregular and often extensive areas of the coal seam have been replaced with impervious shales and sandstones in "Fault" or "Want" areas. The replacement materials have sealed the methane in the coal seam and thus increased the quantity of gas that must be handled as mining is done. Often the No. 5 Pocahontas Seam comes down to meet the No. 4 Seam at the Faults and considerable methane is sometimes released from the upper seam. The factors mentioned, together with the irregular and unpredictable lateral shape' of the faults, result in long narrow stringers of coal that are very gaseous and difficult to mine. So far as the Olga Coal Company is concerned, the most effective ventilation under the conditions outlined has been the use of large diameter bore holes with a pressure ventilation system. The ventilation of a mine can be accomplished in two fundamental ways. The mine atmosphere maybe reduced below atmospheric pressure by an exhaust fan; or it may be raised above atmospheric pressure by a pressure fan. In either case, the coursing of the air is so planned as to have the haulage and traveling ways on intake air. While the majority of the coal mines in the United States, no doubt, use the exhaust system of ventilation, there are several advantages of the pressure system which are extremely beneficial.
