Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) is a preferred method of gold recovery from cyanided pulp. However, the resin-in-pulp (RIP) process is considered to have several advantages for the recovery of gold. Mintek therefore undertook a research programme to develop a commercially-viable RIP process. The MINRIP RIP process and a novel gold­selective strong-base resin, Minix, were developed. The process has been successfully demonstrated at a scale of 100 000 t/month. Continuous countercurrent tests using synthetic solutions indicate that the relative performance of an adsorbent depends on the composition of the solution. Minix resin yielded a higher gold loading than that of carbon, while maintaining an acceptable barren value. Batch tests on a number of gold-bearing materials indicated that Minix has potentially a higher capacity than carbon, and loads gold faster than carbon. An economic appraisal that consolidated the countercurrent results and the economic study indicated that the capital and operating costs of the Minrip process are considerably lower than those of CIP. The amount of the cost advantage depends on the gold content of the feed and the throughput.

"Metro Line 5 in Sao Paulo is being constructed. This lot extends for 4,940 m with twin EPB shield tunnels under a dense and busy urban area, with an excavation diameter of 6.9 m. The tunnels run predominantly in the tertiary soils of Sao Paulo where extensive experience exists from previous EPB shield tunnel projects. However, new experience is being gained in Sao Paulo in shield tunnelling through Saprolite, the weathered product of the underlying Gneiss crystalline basement, through the resulting residual soils and in rock-soil mixed face conditions. Furthermore, experiences in difficult mixed face soil conditions with overconsolidated clay at the face in combination with loose sands at the crown under the groundwater table will be presented. Additionally, the design, operational and controlling approach followed for the shield drive at particular critical cross-sections where the shields were driven close or under buildings. INTRODUCTION Within the framework of Sao Paulo´s metro network expansion, the excavation of the shield tunnels for Metro Sao Paulo Line 5 is currently taking place. The present paper deals with the description of the most relevant features from the construction of the Line 5 – Lot 3 tunnels. The paper presents how particular challenges were dealt maximising potential of EPB shield tunnelling technology. Challenges were posed not only by the difficult boundary conditions of urban shield tunnelling, such as shield drive under buildings, but also by complex geotechnical situations. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The great urban area of São Paulo is one of the biggest cities in the world, with around 20 Million people living in the city and in the suburb area. The city faces great mobility problems and in the last years the government has been investing great amounts on the megacity´s metro expansion. The Line 5 Extension plays an important role to connect the south area to the central area of the city, with a whole extension of 11 kilometres, including 11 new stations. It is estimated that this line will transport almost 900.000 passengers/day. The first stretch of the expansion, Lot 3, consists of two single tunnels, almost 5 kilometres long each, crossing 4 stations. Figure 1 shows details of the Line 5 Expansion."

Heavy earth-moving machineries used in openpit mines intensively expose drill operators to whole-body vibration and shocks, and thus to musculoskeletal disorders. The roles of individual, machine and rock-related factors in their exposure remain poorly understood. This cross-sectional study investigated their roles in 39 drill operators from Indian iron ore mines. It shows that 70 percent of the operators were exposed to high levels of vibration, above the limit values recommended by ISO 2631-1 (1997). Multiple linear regression models showed that the whole-body vibration and shock exposures were strongly associated with operator’s age, drill-machine model and rock hardness, uniaxial compressive strength and density. The role of body mass index was close to significance (p = 0.08). Univariate analyses found the drill’s age, seat-pad thickness and seat backrest height were also strong predictors. These results help in identifying risky operators, materials and occupational situations, and in implementing appropriate prevention and intervention strategies to reduce and monitor the exposures and health risk. In addition, during the planning stage of acquisition of new equipment, anthropometric data of the operators should be considered for the ergonomic design of the seat.

Land Application Discharge (LAD) is a useful method of disposing of waste water from mining operations and in certain climatic regimes, stormwater runoff. LAD systems function under the premise that metals, salts and nutrients in water are dispersed over a large area and are effectively assimilated into the soil profile. Depending on the soil structure, migration or mobilization of dissolved metals through the soil profile can be Substantially reduced. Land application of treated effluent from sewage lagoons or waste water plants was probably the first general use of land applied water. LAD has gained popularity with the mining industry as a means of disposing of waste water and process water. In addition, large volumes of snow meltwater and stormwater are often placed in storage in Montana during spring, and Land Application Discharge has shown to be an effective method for disposing of stormwater during the dry, summer season. LAD can also provide an alternative to recycling or treating waste water at on-site waste water treatment plant&. Application of stormwater or process water can result in little or no change to the background concentrations of metals in baseline water quality samples. One cautionary note about LAD: high salt concentrations and pH values are associated with process water from heap-leach facilities and are known to cause burning of local vegetation. Some pre-treatment of process water may be necessary to prevent such environmental problems.

INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. A 2 1/2 inch diameter probe containing a high resolution gamma ray spectrometer was developed for downhole ore grade assays to depths of 6,000 feet. Tests have been conducted on the characteristics of this tool for in-situ determinations of uranium by means of natural gamma ray counting, and of copper, silver, gold, iron and coal quality by means of neutron-induced gamma rays. Application of the technique for improved carbon-oxygen logging in oil fields is promising. The probe contains a cryogenically cooled high purity germanium detector and a 4,000 channel spectrum analyzer. Gamma ray spectra are digitally transmitted up the cable to the truck-mounted data processing system. We found that uranium can be assayed directly in different types of formations independently of the degree of geochemical disequilibrium by counting the relatively weak 1.001 MeV gamma ray of protactinium-234m. Neutron activation work shows that in-situ determinations of copper, silver, iron and coal quality are technically feasible. In carbon-oxygen oil well logging the technique allows an accurate determination of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, silicon, calcium and iron, and shows promise of providing an improved oil/water differentiator.

It is a very difficult task to estimate the immediate roof and support behavior in a room-and-pillar mining section in the initial phase of the mining project. There is little information available at this phase, and it is restricted to geomechanic characterization of the rock layers from cores samples, and the in-situ instrumentation of experimental entries and intersections. Even being a pilot excavation for roof support test a good indicator for the behavior of the immediate roof, its behavior for a full excavation mining section is different from a single intersection of two entries, mainly because the stress redistribution caused by the multiple entries excavation and face advance for a full excavation section. The objective of this paper was to calibrate a 3-D numerical model of an experimental intersection, based on the in-situ instrumentation of an experimental intersection excavation, and the geomechanic description of the rock layers. The numerical model was built with the same specifications as the excavation test, including the entry geometry and roof support. The numerical model calibration was based on wire extensometers that were installed at different positions in the roof of the pilot excavation, and on the geomechanic characterization of the rock layers that form the roof, coal seam, and floor. Therefore, it is possible to estimate whether the roof support specification adopted in the test phase will be good enough for the development of the entire mining section.

As part of a funded project we have completed a comparative literature survey of the US regional Proterozoic geology. For our com¬parative study model we used the geological settings of the very large pitchblende deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada and the Northern Terri¬tory of Australia. These occur in a variety of Archean and Lower Proterozoic host rocks, at and below a regional unconformity that is capped by subhorizontal Middle to Upper Proterozoic conti¬nental sedimentary rocks. We find that there have been recorded in some parts of the US similar unconformable sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic continental sedimentary rocks that overlie older basement rocks.

A computer model is developed for the problem of dispersal of dust (suspended particulate matter) resulting from blasting operations in surface mines. Undulated surface (lower boundary) simulation was carried through sixth order polynomial by least square approximation. Segmentwise terrain simulation was linearly added to build ground feature extending either side of the blast location. Assuming the initial dust concentration in the vertical column to. be uniform and treating the finite vertical line sources as a series of point sources to height, H varying from zero to top of the dust mushroom, integration was done of the concentration effects from H = 0 toL tan[0] (L = horizontal distance of the blast location and [0] is the angle of the top of dust cloud from the point of observation). Using frame of reference moving with the mean wind, the ground level 'concentration (GLC) has been computed over the undulated terrain. Standard deviation (s) of concentration has been parameterized based on mixed layer similarity theory in convective boundary layer.

European coal mines are facing a very difficult situation. Despite a steadily increasing world energy consumption, the sales of European coal mines have been going down and production has to be adapted. The reason is the collapse of energy prices aided by the decreasing rate of U.S. $ to Deutschmark in the last few years. The problems are not due to the development of European mines themselves. Assured energy supplies are an important condition for the health of a nation's economy. Contribution of domestic energy production ensures some degree of independence from world market fluctuations as to supply volumes and price, and maintaining jobs and should be achieved within the framework of economic constellations. Governmental energy programs are planned towards meeting this end.

Exploration activity for diamonds in Canada has recently experienced a dramatic increase. Disclosure of a diamond discovery exhibiting features of a potentially economic deposit contained in a kimberlite pipe in the Lac de Gras area of Canada's Northwest Territories has sparked substantial interest in-Canada and abroad and has triggered the largest staking rush in terms of area in the history of Canadian exploration. In this paper, we report on the nature and extent of current exploration activity in Canada for diamonds (with special attention to Arctic regions), the results of this activity to date, and the context in terms of current world markets for diamonds.

Land subsidence had been observed in recent years throughout the Southwest. Particular examples of this phenomenon that have gained wide publicity axe in the Long Beach and Central Valley areas of California and, the Houston area of Texas. Less well known is the fact that the land surface Is subsiding in many parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. The causes of this problem vary from place to place, as do also the rates of subsidence. In Houston it has been related to pumping water from artesian aquifers; in Long Beach to the development of oil fields; and in the Central Valley to both the lowering of artesian pressures in deep aquifers and the wetting of poorly consolidated surficial deposits. The mechanism by which subsidence occurs in southern Arizona, even though it can be correlated with the continued lowering of ground water levels, is not as apparent as in these other cases. It is the purpose of this paper to examine both the causes and affects of land subsidence in southern and central Arizona.

As part of an ongoing programme on behaviour of heavy minerals In streams, the dispersion of Au as free gold (Day and Fletcher, 1987), Sn in cassiterite (Fletcher et al, 1987) and W in scheelite (Saxby and Fletcher, 1987) have been investigated downstream of mineralization. The studies of Au and W were undertaken, in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory, respectively, in streams that are strongly influenced by spring snowmelt floods. Sn was investigated under tropical rainforest conditions in Peninnsular Malaysia.

Introduction An examination of statistics for the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals that there is an increasing tendency for fertilizer-manufacturing activity to concentrate in the areas of phosphate-rock mining. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping a more valuable finished fertilizer product will always, as long as cost considerations control the decision, be resolved in favor of the latter. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer-manufacturing capacity, which is oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock, shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent are these changes. These questions are the subject of this investigation. Recent trends in world phosphate trade Since 1980, the changing pattern of world trade in phosphate materials reflects an increased interest in manufacturing phosphate fertilizer in rock-producing areas. This is shown by the decline in the total tonnage of phosphate rock being traded worldwide compared to world consumption of phosphate fertilizers (Fig. 1). This relative decline has continued since 1984, which is a longer period of time than could be explained by temporary cyclical market factors. Other evidence corroborates this conclusion. The world's phosphate-rock production is relatively concentrated geographically. In 1992, the top ten producing countries accounted for 92% of world production. Figure 2 shows that the share of world fertilizer production in the top ten rock producers has increased. Yet, further evidence of the direction of trade changes can be had by looking at the pattern of the world's sulfur trade. The first step in the manufacture of any of the widely used phosphate fertilizer products is the acidulation of phosphate rock with sulfuric acid. In most instances, phosphate fertilizer producers have found it economical to produce their own sulfuric acid by burning elemental sulfur, and such operations account for over 60% of all sulfur consumption in the world. 1 Therefore, a concentration of phosphate fertilizer production in rock-producing countries should produce a similar concentration of sulfur imports in the same countries. Figure 3 suggests that there has been a tendency since 1989 for sulfur exports to go increasingly to the rockproducing countries. World phosphate-location strategy is not limited to the alternatives of shipping rock and shipping finished fertilizers. A third alternative consists of producing phosphoric acid, the principal phosphate fertilizer intermediate, at the rock deposit, and then exporting it to market-oriented ammonium phosphate plants. This arrangement offers the importing country the advantages of shipping a more concentrated product while retaining the economic multiplier benefits of a domestic high-analysis fertilizer industry. India, and several other countries, imports merchant-grade phosphoric acid to use as input for the domestic value-added fertilizer industries. For various reasons, the trade in phosphoric acid has never quite lived up to the promise suggested by the foregoing discussion. Figure 4 shows no growth in this trade in the last ten years, either in absolute terms or in relation to the world's consumption of phosphoric acid. Most of the decline in the trade in phosphorous in rock form has been replaced with trade in finished fertilizers. The trade in superphosphoric acid was a growth activity in the late 1970s with the growth in US exports to the USSR, and this trade survived the Carter-era embargoes of US-Soviet trade. However, no additional sizable markets for superphosphoric acid developed, and other suppliers sought out the Soviet market. The problem with superphosphoric acid is that the cost of its incremental concentration is as great as the savings from shipping the more concentrated product. The Soviet market was a special case. The political breakup of the Soviet Union disrupted the superphosphoric acid trade after 1991 and led to a shutdown of the US export capacity.

1. INTRODUCTION The economic importance of bringing a new mine to production in the shortest possible time, is well known. In recent years the rate of escalation of mining costs has accelerated more rapidly than at any time in the past. This fact has enhanced the need to reduce time schedules and made it an overriding and predominant objective when planning new shafts. The squeezed profit margins and widely fluctuating metal prices have also increased the emphasis being placed on this aspect. Moreover the increase in the present value of future profits due to the reduction in the time element, can be so substantial that expenditure on equipment and additional labour can be justified conditional on sufficient gain in shaft sinking speed being achieved. The emphasis on time saving becomes more abundantly clear when considering the very large increase in the capital required to bring a modern underground mine to production. As an example, the initial capital expenditure requirements for a large new gold mine in the Western Transvaal, which has commenced production recently, is estimated at R200M, and a major extension to another deep level mine in the same area is estimated at R300M. With the uncertainty of future metal prices and the recent trends in increasing inflation, it is becoming more difficult than ever to estimate the profitability of proposed mining projects and any cost saving due to more rapid sinking of shafts can only assist in this respect. Since the shaft systems are frequently the most expensive set of underground excavations and no other underground work can commence until they are completed, the speed of shaft sinking is subject to closer scrutiny than in the past. In the following sections of this paper the factors contributing to the high average advance rates achieved by South African shaft sinkers are discussed. It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the effect of any single factor, in isolation, on the overall sinking achievements. However, the cumulative effect of improvements made in the inter-related activities is, probably, the most important contributor. Although there has not been any single major technical change or innovation to shaft sinking practices in the last decade, the average sinking speeds have increased, due to improved application and technical improvements in established procedures. 2. GENERAL When discussing South African shaft sinking techniques and average sinking rates compared to those achieved in other parts of the world, it should be remembered that the size and depth of South African shafts are often considerably greater than in most other countries. The innovation in a technological field is reflected by the Research and Development (R & D) activity in it. It is explained why patent literature is a more reliable indicator than non-patent literature for the assessment of the R & D activity in the technological fields considered. Consequently the R & D activity is measured in this article through the patent applications filed in the fields considered. The pattern of patent application filings in Drilling, Mining, Tunneling and accessory technologies is analyzed at an international scale over the period 1990-2000. A statistical analysis of the fluctuation of the number of patent applications per year, per country and per technological field is performed. The technological fields are defined on the basis of the internal patent classification used in the European Patent Office. The article attempts to detect the high activity and ?cutting edge? technologies over said period, to relate them to political or financial events and possibly to foresee the ?cutting edge? technologies of the future in which potential investors could be successful. Strong patents are revealed on the basis of the frequency of their citations by the applicants in patent applications or by the patent examiners in the search report. International as well as specific national trends in the innovation are spotted and analyzed.

Starting in 1967 two major hydroelectric power projects have been implemented in East Africa viz. Kafue Gorge in Zambia and Great Ruaha in Tanzania. The two projects have similar characteristics and each consists of an underground power plant, a dam in connection with the power plant and a reservoir dam. The power plants are both designed and constructed according to principles applied in Scandinavia for a long time. Each consists of a headrace of a horizontal unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 10 km, vertical penstock shafts, machinery and transformer halls in large rock caverns and a tailrace of an unlined rock tunnel with a length of about 1 km. The head of the power plant of Kafue Gorge is 400 m, Great Ruaha 175 m, the capacity is 900 MW and 200 MW respectively. Both plants were executed in one stage, but building and erection works were made in two stages. However, the power plants show some interesting differences in design. The power plants are briefly described in the following, special regard being paid to the excavation works. The particle-bubble attachment and the rupture of formed aggregates in flotation cell were investigated in terms of turbulent regime. It was found that the particle-bubble collision rate is closely correlated to the energy barrier between particles and bubbles, and no adhesion takes place for the hydrophilic particle-bubble system due to the introduced ?capture efficiency? f(a) being zero. The values of an especially defined Weber number, i.e. the ratios of turbulent stress to aggregate strength in the inertial subrange of turbulence were estimated, the results showed that the detachment of a particle from a bubble involved in an aggregate is mainly caused by the turbulent stress only in the impeller zone, no bubble splitting occurs both in the impeller zone and in the bulk zone.

"Using a parameter representing the degree of hydration of particles in a liquid called hydration index I, which we derived based on Einstein’s viscosity equation, we evaluated the degree of hydration of fine montmorillonite particles in different aqueous solutions by measuring the viscosities of the montmorillonite dispersions and plotting relative viscosity against volume fraction of dry montmorillonite particles in the dispersions. We investigated the effects on the hydration of montmorillonite in aqueous solutions of (1) the type and (2) the concentration of electrolytes in the solutions and (3) pH. For the same concentration of electrolytes, the hydration index I of montmorillonite was found to increase in the order of Na+ > K+ for monovalent cations and Mg2+ > Ca2+ for divalent cations, and to decrease with increasing valence of cations in the order of Na+ > Ca2+ > Al3+. For both Na+ and Ca2+, the hydration index I first increased with increasing concentration of electrolytes and then decreased after a certain concentration. The hydration index I increased with increasing pH. IntroductionClay minerals have the distinctive ability to adsorb water molecules and hydrated cations in aqueous solutions, resulting in hydration on their outer surfaces and in their interlayer spaces. Many investigators (Jurinak, 1963; Anderson and Tice, 1971; Costanzo et al., 1982; Israelachvili, 1992) had found evidence of ice-like structures of water on clay minerals.This phenomenon of hydration plays an important role in the dispersion and sedimentation of clay minerals in aqueous solutions. To understand clay hydration, numerous experimental and simulation studies have been carried out since 1933, including the recent ones of Hawkins and Egelstaff (1980), Skipper et al. (1995), Karaborni et al. (1996), Salles et al. (2013) and Morrow et al. (2013). Among the factors that can influence a clay mineral’s hydration characteristics are chemical composition, type and degree of isomorphous replacement in its structure, and number and nature of associated exchangeable cations."

"The ground water heat pump system lades underground hot water which can be heated or cooled by heat exchanger in water source heat pump air conditioner. This system replaces the model of heating of air-conditioning by refrigerator and boiler. In this paper, the formation conditions of hot water energy in Shan Dong are analyzed in order to achieve the purpose of energy conservation and emissions reduction by taking full advantage of water resources such as water pouring and return water of beatification during the productive process of underground metal mine. In order to analyze the issue better, the paper points out some ways and methods for geothermal water often used in underground metal mine. This paper also presents the advantages of the technology of water source heat pump that is applied into underground metal mine. Here is a case study of comprehensive utilization of water source in a certain underground metal mine in Ji Ning. This mine, according to its own actual situation, designs heat pump heat exchange system which is used for indoor heating of buildings and bath for staff. It turns out that the system can save 23% water per year, cut down 3.303 million KW electric energy, and reduce 4160t emission of carbon dioxide. It is concluded that the technology of water source heat pump has broad application prospects in underground metal mine. Therefore, the results show that it is an ideal way to change the present structure of cooling and heating source in metal mine.Introduction In recent years, overuse of fossil fuels has posed a grave threat onto the environment, which makes renewable energy a more important status in energy structure. Development and utilization of renewable energy has become an important direction. Water source heat pump technology is to use solar energy stored in water as cold/heat source to convert energy. Currently, this technology has been widely used in some advanced countries. However, due to facers of implementation technology and component costs, there is still a gap in water source heat pump technology between China and these advanced countries. According to (Blum et al 2011) that after in-depth study, water source heat pump technology has developed rapidly in China recently, and the gap is gradually reduced. Groundwater source heat pump system as a kind of high efficiency, energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology in recent years, more and more get the people's attention. At the same time, its practical application has also been rapid development.
