The problem of how to handle heterogeneous populations in an ore reserve global estimation arises in many geostatistical studies. In some cases it is possible to split data into different significant types of ore in such way that non-overlapping subpopulations are obtained, and a separate study is possible. In other cases the subpopulations are intermingled and a set of nested structures may model the spatial variability of the ore. Finally, one of the populations, consisting of a small proportion of high grade values of economical meaning, may disturb the structural analysis. In this paper, some methods are proposed to cope with these kind of problems and typical case studies are presented.

Bacís mining is a young enterprise in Mexico that produces a pyrite concentrate rich in gold and silver. When gold and silver are associated to sulfide minerals, pre-treament such as: roasting, pressure oxidation and bioleching, is required to decompose the sulphides and thereby expose the gold and silver particles to the cyanide solution. A novel method demonstrates that the oxidation and dissolution of gold and silver in alka-line cyanide solution can be conducted simultaneously in the same autoclave in less than 90 minutes with a recovery that exceeds 96%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency such as pH, leaching time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density were investigated.

The MIT tunneling group has developed, over the past decade, a number of decision support tools for the geologist and engineer, planner and designer, owner and contractor involved in underground construction. These computer based tools can be used in the planning and exploration stage of a project, in predesign and design, in construction planning and during construction. Tasks as different as optimizing information collection during exploration and during construction, as selecting major design alternatives in predesign and modifying design during construction, as providing cost and time estimation and considering social and physical environmental constraints, can be handled. Output can be in the form desired by the user ranging from geologic profiles (cross sections) to management reports.

A new technique, prompt neutron activation probe (PNAP), for analyzing phosphate rock slurry in-situ was evaluated both in the laboratory and at the plant. The technique yielded a high precision in the analysis of Ca, Si and H using 252Cf source. Low accuracy of the direct measurement of P using 241Am/Be in the laboratory tests was attributed to the interference of rare earth elements present in the samples, particularly Gadolinium. No significant effect of variables such as solids loading, particle size distribution, and flotation reagents was observed on the probe performance. The probe can detect the compositional changes of the feed, tailings and the concentrate streams in the plant.

This chapter contains moderately detailed descriptions of some typical and well known mills that treat predominantly sulfide copper ores, some containing secondary values in gold, silver, and molybdenum. The descriptions are general in nature, because most of the specific data will be found in tabulations elsewhere in this section, covering a large number of mills in such matters as flotation reagents, crushing and grinding equipment and steel consumption, thickener and filter operating data, power consumption, and many others, in a manner that the reader will find convenient and comprehensive for reference and comparison. On the other hand, the plant descriptions selected for this chapter emphasize the kind of information that cannot be readily tabulated.

Since the start of this decade, our society has attached great importance to matters concerning environmental protection. Currently, most mining operations use the cyanidation process in working gold deposits. While this process is efficient, the dangerous aspects of cyanide are delaying the development and marketing of cyanidation in underground sites. There is a growing need to consider installing an underground leaching system that will make the processing of low-grade gold ore profitable by reducing certain major operating costs (transportation, crushing and grinding). Underground leaching is performed in two ways. The first way is in-site or underground and the second way is in-situ. CANMET (Harrison et al.), in collaboration with Dennison Mines, developed the underground leaching of uranium. This process is used commercially. Copper, salt and sulphur are recovered by in-situ leaching (Jacobson and Murphy). The recovery of gold and silver is under development (Van Staden and Laxen).

Since it is becoming increasingly important, from an environmental viewpoint, to minimize blast vibrations induced in urban dwellings and improve rock fragmentation in order to reduce costs with loading, transportation crushing and grinding, a cooperative research project was established between Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD and the Blasting Research Group in the Department of Mining Engineering at Escola de Minas - UFOP to investigate which elements interfere on ground vibration, air blast, flyrock and rock fragmentation related to rock blasting activities at Conceição Mine, located in Itabira city, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This research also involved development of a new explosives formulation in order to minimize the total blasting cost. This paper presents the general scheme of the research running from May 1995 to May 1997 and a summary of the results obtained in the field tests that were carried out in this mine.

A systematic slope design for open-pit mines has become a reality only in recent years. Advances in the science of rock mechanics, coupled with extensive use of computers, have enabled the numerical solution of slope design problems which were not previously amenable to analytical or numerical solution. This slope stability study was performed for the UJV-SB open-pit uranium mine of the Getty Oil Co., located in the Shirley Basin area, Wyoming. The purpose of the study was to determine the appropriate slope angles for a starter pit. The data generated during the mining of the starter pit would test the initial design and suggest appropriate modification in the design for future mining in the project area. There had been a history of slope failures in the open-pit uranium mines in the area due to the low competency of the overburden materials and adverse hydrological conditions.

INTRODUCTION The selective sensitivity of plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD's) to low energy 4He particles in an environment which also contains gamma and beta radiations has made these detectors prime candidates for the dosimetric measurement of the concentrations of radon and its daughter products in mine air. Their passive, integrating mode of measurement, small size, low weight and inexpensiveness are attractive characteristics for large scale personnel dosimetry. The detectors can be used in either active or passive dosimeters. In active devices, the PNTD is placed in close proximity to a sampling filter. The filter collects, from a calibrated air flow, all the daughter nuclei which are in suspension. As the daughter nuclei pass through the decay chain, through 214Po, a fraction of the 4He particles emitted are registered as latent tracks in the plastic. In passive devices, the PNTD is placed in direct contact with the ambient air containing the radio-nuclei concentrations to be determined. The active dosimeters have the advantage of excellent sensitivity, and the measured track densities yield very close approximations to accumulated Working Level (WL)** exposures. They have the disadvantage that the simplicity of the passive PNTD is lost, since a battery-driven constant flow-rate air pump is a necessity. The passive dosimeters are simple in construction and use, but they have the disadvantage that WL exposures are not directly measured and certain assumptions concerning radon and daughter equilibrium conditions must be made in determining WL exposures from the measured track densities. Also the sensitivities, in track densities per Working Level Hour (WLH) exposure, are much less than for active dosimeters. Dosimeters of both types have been investigated. Passive devices have been tested extensively both in the laboratory and in mines. Active devices have been laboratory tested. In our earlier measurements, cellulose nitrate plastic detectors were used exclusively, since this material had the highest sensitivity of the PNTD's then in use. When the properties of CR-39 plastic were discovered (Cartwright, 1978; Cassou and Benton, 1978), this material was used, where possible, to take advantage of its superior sensitivity. The results of our earlier work have previously been published (Frank and Benton, 1977). * Research sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Interior, under Contract No. JO-188003. ** A Working Level is defined as any combination of the short-lived radon daughters containing 1.3 x 105 MeV of potential 4He-particle energy per liter of ambient air. PASSIVE DOSIMETRY In the earliest testing of PNTD's for passive WL dosimetry, a single strip of cellulose nitrate plastic was used to determine the total cumulative 4He-particle activity in the air of simulated uranium mine and uranium mine environments (Rock, 1968; Rock [et al], 1969; White, 1969). The measurements yielded a close relationship between track densities and WL exposures in a controlled, static environment, but poor accuracy in the active mine tests. It was assumed that equilibrium differences contributed largely to the variations found. The response of PNTD's to airborne 4He-particle emitters, derived by Lovett (1969), demonstrated that detectors such as cellulose nitrate, which has a sensitivity cutoff at 4He-particle energies below the emission energies of radon and its daughters, are equally sensitive to the activity concentrations of radon, 218po(RaA) and 214Po(RaC'). Since radon does not contribute to WL as it is defined, and since, under normal ventilated uranium mine conditions, the radon activity constitutes about 40% to 70% of the total 4He-particle activity, the WL exposures calculated from measured track densities are very sensitive to the particular radon daughter equilibrium conditions. Also, the detector does not weight the individual daughter activities in proportion to their importance to WL. The equation for WL is WL = 0.00103C2 + 0.00507C3 + 0.00373C4 (1) where C2, C3 and C4 are the activity concentrations of RaA, RaB and RaC-C', respectively, in pCi/[L]. The detector leaves C3 unmeasured and weights C2 and C4, equally. [This problem has been approached by Domanski et al (1975, 1979), for some non-uranium mines, by measuring equilibrium conditions throughout the mines to determine a mean value for A, the inverse of the Working Level Ratio (WLR = 100 WL where C1 is the activity of radon-222 in pCi/[L].) The distribution of values allowed Domanski to determine probable errors in calculating WL exposures from track densities. However, measurements of equilibrium conditions in U.S. uranium mines (Breslin et al, 1969; Holub and Droullard, 1978) indicate that this method would not be accurate enough for uranium miner personal dosimetry.] A two-element dosimeter was designed at our laboratory to compensate for equilibrium variations. The first element is a radon detector; the second is a detector for the total 4He-particle activity in the ambient air, just as in the single element dosimeters cited above. The addition of the radon detector allows the equilibrium conditions for the individual nuclei to be determined, given certain assumptions concerning the interrelationships between the nuclei concentrations in mine air. The two detectors and the problems involved in calculating WL exposures from their measurements are discussed below.

Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. Nevertheless, from the evidence of some of the fracture work, it is surprising that no improvements in metallurgical

Daily everyone depends on the great variety of glass products, so much so that glass is often taken for granted. In fact most people do not realize how versatile glass has become. Consider the various uses and then try to imagine a day in which we are not influenced by glass. Common uses include container ware, table ware, window glass, lead crystal, automobile glass, and fiber glass. Several less common, but important, uses include laboratory ware, pharmaceutical, TV bulbs, light bulbs, glass ceramics, optical glass, fiber optics, and laser glass. Corning, Inc., a leader in specialty products, uses nearly 1 000 different compositions to manufacture about 60 000 different products (Edwards and Copley, 1977). Glass is such a complex product that-definitions vary and exceptions can be found for most definitions. Glass is an inorganic amorphous (non-crystalline) solid. Most glasses are produced by melting of a mixture of oxide raw materials, and then cooled to room temperature. Soda-lime-silica composition.s account for about 90% of all glasses melted (Anon, 1973). The properties of the glass product come mainly from its chemical composition. All of the different glasses require melting a combination of raw materials and forming the molten material into the desired shape. Both the melting and the forming processes use sophisticated technology and these technologies require experts to manage these production systems. The manufacturing process is continuous and takes place in tonnage quantities, so adjustments in the batch to achieve the desired finished product requires a great deal of expertise. Raw materials are fed to the batch mixing area in very large quantities (tons in most cases). As a result, impurities in the range of 0.1% result in addition of that impurity within the molten glass in kilogram amounts. More than twenty different industrial minerals are consumed in the manufacture of various kinds of glass (O'Driscoll, 1990). This chapter describes the major and minor ingredients of the various glass batches. It discusses the roles of the various oxides in the glass batch and most importantly considers the mineral raw materials which supply the glass industry. Each of the raw materials is described in detail in other chapters so the geology and mineralogy sections are kept brief here. Container glass, by far, accounts for the most production; followed by flat glass, fiber glass, and specialty glass of which table ware accounts for the greatest tonnage. [Table 1] shows the general production data for 1987 through 1990. Statistics for many of the uses do not appear because production volumes are small compared to the major uses. The glass industry is organized in four categories: containers, flat glass, fiber glass and specialty glass. The US Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census, publishes production data about the glass industry in three different categories: 1) glass containers, 2) consumer, scientific, technical and industrial glassware, and 3) flat glass. The Bureau has very complete statistics about the glass industry in these three categories but they report production data in different units according to industry standards. Therefore, [Table 1] gives the production data in dissimilar units. The production of most glass articles follows similar steps. The raw materials are mixed and the resulting batch is fed into the furnace. In soda-lime-silica glasses melting begins between 600 and 900°C. At these temperatures CO, and other gasses are released which create bubbles in the molten glass. To remove the bubbles and insure complete melting the temperature is raised to between 1 500 and 1 600°C. This is the melting-refining stage during which the refining agents in the glass batch serve to aid in the release of gas bubbles, homogenize the melt, and prevent the formation of scum on the surface of the molten liquid. At the conclusion of the melting-refining stage the glass is too fluid for working and the melt is cooled to about 1 100°C to attain the proper viscosity for working and forming to begin. After the glass article has been made, it must undergo annealing (slowly and uniformly reheated and cooled) to remove thermal stresses that were created during the forming process.

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. This belt extends diagonally across the country over a breadth of Table 1. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. Drilling fluids have changed over the years from water and/or water frequently mixed with local clays to scientifically com- pounded materials (mud). This change has occurred due to changes in drilling methods from percussion to rotary: depth maximum from 21 m in the first oil well to more than 9 000 m; and variety in types of well or hole to gas, oil, water, and mineral exploration. Environmental concerns about the composition of the fluid as to heavy metals and oil on the cuttings has recently caused changes in the materials used in the mud. The drilling fluid should perform the following functions (Darley et al., 1980): 1) Carry cuttings from beneath the bit, transport them up the annulus, and permit their separation at the surface. 2) Cool and clean the bit. 3) Reduce friction between the drilling string and the sides of the hole. 4) Maintain the stability of uncased sections of the borehole. 5) Prevent the inflow of fluids-oil, gas, or water-from permeable rocks penetrated. 6) Form a thin, low-permeability filter cake which seals pores and other openings in formations penetrated by the bit. In addition to these, the fluid should: 1) Not injure drilling personnel nor be damaging or offensive to the environment. 2) Not require unusual or expensive methods of completion of the drilled hole. 3) Not interfere with the normal productivity of the fluid- bearing formation. 4) Not corrode or cause excessive wear of drilling equipment. A number of industrial minerals, chemicals, and other materials are used as additives in the drilling fluid to accomplish these functions. Industrial minerals make up the highest percentage of the additives in a drilling fluid. Drilling fluids are classified according to their principal components: water, oil, and gas. If the major component is either water or oil, the component along with the suspension of solids, cuttings and additives is referred to in the trade as a mud. The largest use of some industrial minerals, such as barite and bentonite, is in drilling muds. For other materials, such as gypsum and limestone, drilling usage is only a small percentage of total demand. RAW MATERIALS [Table 1] lists the industrial minerals used in drilling fluids, their form, specifications, and uses. Each raw material will be discussed as to its mineralogy, physical and chemical properties, and the location of major deposits with respect to drilling fluids. Attapulgite Attapulgite is a crystalline hydrated magnesium silicate clay mineral, prized for its viscosity in saline waters. The particles are needle-like rather than the platelets common to most clay minerals. The specific gravity is 2.5 and the Mohs hardness is 1 to 1.5. Attapulgite is one of the materials sometimes referred to as fuller's earth. The major producing areas in the United States are southern Georgia and northwestern Florida. It also is mined in Spain, Senegal, the Republic of South Africa, Turkey, India, and Australia. Barite Barite is crystalline barium sulfate. It has a high specific gravity for a non-metallic mineral, 4.5 when pure, and is used as a weighting agent. Generally, the specific gravity ranges from 4.20 to 4.35. It is relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5 and is not very abrasive. Barite is inert, non-toxic, and clean to handle. Common contaminants are quartz, iron minerals, gypsum, and calcium carbonate. If there is considerable gypsum in the barite, it will thicken the mud. The major deposits in the United States are in north central Nevada, near Battle Mountain. The major producing countries, other than the United States, are China, India, Mexico, the former USSR, Turkey, and Morocco. The major deposits in India and Nevada, and some in China, are stratiform, commonly quite pure bodies in bedded sedimentary rocks.

INTRODUCTION The simplest way to drill a hole into rock is to strike a steel chisel or drill bit with a hammer. Early miners used this elementary hand technique so successfully in "single jacking" and "double jacking" that the first mechanical rock-drill designers sought to duplicate it. However, in the early developments, the designers were forced to retreat to a construction known as the "piston drill," wherein the entire drilling element is tied to the piston and reciprocates with it. It took nearly 50 years to devise a method of divorcing the two elements and to achieve the original hammer principle used in hand drilling. The Mont Cenis tunnel, drilled through the French Alps in 1861, usually is considered the birthplace of the mechanical rock drill. The Hoosac tunnel in Massa¬chusetts was drilled at about the same time, and the success of these two ventures paved the way for innova¬tions that produced the Burleigh, Ingersoll, Sergeant, and Waugh piston drills between 1870 and the turn of the century. In 1897, George Leyner of Colorado introduced what has been considered the most significant development in rock-drill history. He devised the hollow drill steel for water flushing; when combined with his free-piston hammer drill, this became the first lightweight and dust¬free underground machine. In addition, Leyner's drills introduced improvements such as automatic rifle-bar rotation of the drill steel and chuck, automatic lubrica¬tion, and an enclosed throttle control. During the 1920s and 1930s, automatic feeds, centralizers, sliding cones, and the automatic water back head were developed, laying the groundwork for all pneumatic underground drills currently in use. Since these pioneering efforts, rock-drill development has been concerned primarily with refining the designs and improving the metallurgy to make faster, lighter, and more dependable machines. Fig. 1 illustrates the progress in drilling speed during the first 125 years of rock-drill development; that progress is a credit to the persistence and inventiveness of the designers in the rock-drilling industry. ROCK-DRILL CLASSIFICATIONS To meet the variety of conditions encountered in rock drilling, several distinct types of drills have been de¬veloped. In general, rock drills may be classified as either hand-held or mounted, with the hand-held ma¬chines including the jackhammer or sinker, the jackdrill or jackleg, and the stoper. The mounted drills are com¬monly known as "drifters." Table 1 shows that each type of drill is available in several sizes from different manufacturers. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical rock drill, showing the principal components. The jackhammer or sinker, shown in Fig. 3, is used primarily for general mine utility work such as drilling anchor holes (short vertical holes to bolt or anchor machinery), pin holes (short, usually horizontal holes to fasten sheaves, etc. to side walls), popholes (for blasting large boulders), and similar applications. They also are used for shaft sinking. Jackhammers are classified ac¬cording to weight, and they range from 7 to 30 kg (15 to 65 lb). The rock drill originally known as a jackleg was made by clamping a pneumatic cylinder or leg to a jack¬hammer, both to support the weight of the machine and to feed the tool forward in horizontal or uphole work. The more modern jackdrill refined this concept to make the hinged pivot for the leg integral with the drill cylinder and to group all drill and leg controls in the drill back head for convenience. Fig. 4 illustrates a typical jackdrill. Jackdrills are classified according to cylinder bore size, ranging from 60 to 83 mm (2.375 to 3.25 in.). Because of their light weight and versatility, jack drills are very effective in small drifts, small tunnel head¬ings, and stoping. INTRODUCTION LKAB was formed at the turn of the century when the railways between the ore fields and harbors were built. The mines are situated north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Kiirunavaara is the largest mine, with a pro¬duction capacity of approximately 30 Mt/a. Malm¬berget has a capacity of about 12 Mt/ a. Both are under¬ground mines. Svappavaara, the only opencast mine currently in operation, has a capacity of about 4.5 Mt/a. The ore harbors are at Narvik for the Kiruna and Svappavaara mines and at Lulea for the Malmberget mine (see Fig. 1). Production in the form of finished products is shown in Fig. 2a, b, c, and d. Due to poor ore markets in re¬cent years, production and shipments have been cut back, but there was a positive swing in 1978. LKAB has been 96% state-owned since 1957. In addition to the iron mines in northern Sweden, LKAB has subsidiaries in central Sweden which produce sulfide ores, quartz sand, and uranium (Fig. 3). The mining methods employed are opencast bench stoping at Svappavaara and sublevel caving at Kiirunavaara and Malmberget. GEOLOGY The Kiirunavaara ore body is 4000 m long and av¬erages about 90 m wide, with variations in width from a few meters to around 150 m. The ore has been ex¬plored by deep drilling down to about 1000 m, but mag¬netic measurements indicate a depth of at least 1500 m. The Kiirunavaara ore is oriented in a north-northeasterly direction with a number of ores in the boundaries be¬tween the wall rock types. The ore in Kiirunavaara is mainly a fine-grained magnetite with a varying content of fine-grained apatite. The apatite content of the ore decreases with increasing depth. The other ores are all apatite-bearing and a couple are hematite ores (Fig. 4a, b). The ores are sedimentary, tilted, and tectonically de¬formed. They have a lateral dip of 0.87 to 1.2 rad (50 to 70°). The contacts between ore and wall rock are distinct and sharp, but both the hanging wall and the footwall are brecciated and impregnated with magnetite. The footwall of the Kiirunavaara ore consists of syenite porphyry with a low quartz content and rela¬tively good strength; the hanging wall consists of quartz porphyry. Both types are known as Kiruna porphyries. The ore at the boundary with the hanging wall is often rich in kaolin. There are a few veins of syenite porphyry running through the ore, which has a few major faults (Fig. 4c, d). There are two sharply delineated ore grades in Kiirunavaara: low phosphorus ore with less than 0.1 % phosphorus (about one-third of the ore) and high phos¬phorus ore with greater than 0.5% phosphorus. The iron content is 67% in the low phosphorus ore and 60% in the high phosphorus ore. These ore types are sold as different grades and so are kept separate during mining. MINING AT KIIRUNAVAARA The Kiirunavaara and Luossavaara ores were first mined using opencast bench stoping in 1902. "Tailings can be more stable in-site where they are stored and and so the risk of conventional tailings dam accidents can be reduced by alternative methods. In recent years, surface paste disposal (SPD) method is one of the alternative tailings storage methods. According to the results obtained from the previous lab scale experiments, optimum storage design was determined and then, this design was carried out in-site application under atmospheric conditions by a pilot scale tests. In the field study, two separate dams with no environmental hazards were established by the hazardous waste storage directive, whose surface area is measured as 400cm × 200cm. Also physical changes in the paste tailings were measured by the sensors such as volumetric water content, mutric suction and oxygen consumption. In addition, seepage water was collected in the drainage pool and examined for acid mine drainage and metal mobilization risks. As a result of the preliminary data obtained from measurements of pilot scale tests, when the pH value of seepage in the cemented dam (only 1th and 10th layers with cemented) is about 11, the pH value of seepage in the uncemented (reference) dam is measured at 8-9. INTRODUCTION Environmental damages occurred during the deposition of mine process tailings at surface using conventional methods (tailings dam etc.) can be reduced and/or eliminated with the use of new technologies and methods to an important extent. Nowadays, it has been investigated to safely deposit metal mine wastes generally discharged into surface tailings dams, seas, rivers, creeks etc. using Paste Tailing Technology which gains the growing importance in recent years. Meanwhile, Paste Tailings Technology has two applications in industry as an underground paste backfill and surface paste deposition. Particularly scientific studies about deposition of process tailings as paste sample in underground and surface have been increased. These studies showed that surface paste deposition can minimize the free water amount which is the biggest problem in conventional tailings dams. Additionally, it also provides less particle segregation, in other words, the formation of more homogenous material, the development of geotechnical properties which causes to obtain more stable material, increases the strength and stability of the paste with addition of binder where necessary surface paste material, and reduces the risk of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) (Bascetin et al., 2017a). Theriault et al. (2003), Martin et al. (2006) and Simms et al. (2007) reported that Bulyanhulu mine in Tanzania is the first gold mine to employ surface paste disposal (SPD) worldwide. Here, tailings are deposited alternately via several towers. The tailings flow away from each tower to forming a conical deposit. Each layer had a lower thickness than 30 cm. The fresh tailings were poured on top of drying and hardening layer after a waiting period of 5-30 days. No cement was added into the tailings to prepare paste material. Uncemented paste was deposited by a solid content of 73% which corresponded to a 250 mm slump cone height (Yilmaz et al., 2014). In a study conducted by Yilmaz (2010) illustrates the preliminary results of a field cell testing undertaken to investigate the effect of in situ climate conditions and material properties on the performance and quality of fine-grained, sulphide-rich paste tailings at the LaRonde mine in Quebec, Canada. A total of two field cells are constructed in the surface disposal site of the mine and categorized as cemented cell CC and uncemented cell UC (Bascetin et al., 2017b)."

Introduction Many bulk solids such as coal, limestone, and fine moist ores often flow unpredictably out of bins, hoppers, and boreholes. Vast amounts of time and money are spent-with or without success-on flow promoting devices. In addition, many solids segregate in storage, feed erratically, flood, arch, rathole, and stick to bin walls reducing the live capacity. This article discusses bulk solids flow properties and provides guidelines for designing storage bins, hoppers, and feeders to provide reliable flow. Bulk Solids A bulk solid is a granular material consisting of discrete solid particles-submicron to several inches in size-that is handled in bulk form (for example, in a bin or silo). The gas filling the voids is generally insufficient to fluidize the material and the liquid (usually water) content is assumed to be less than saturation. Types of Flow Problems To design an efficient storage system, an engineer must be aware of problems that can arise during storage and flow of bulk solids: • No flow. A stable arch or pipe (rathole) develops within the solid, stopping flow. • Erratic flow. Momentary arches form within the solid, (ratholes), partly or completely empty out, and then collapse. • Flushing. Powders become fluidized, aerate, and flush uncontrollably through the bin outlet. • Lack of design capacity. A large part of the stored material remains stable around a rathole. Manual prodding, severe vibration, and even explosives may be used to restore flow. • Segregation. Smaller particles tend to sift through the voids between larger particles causing accumulations of fines and coarse in various areas of the bin. • Product degradation. Some materials spoil, cake, or oxidize if they remain in a bin too long. This is usually caused by a first-in-last-out flow sequence. • Level control. Measuring the volume of material left in a bin is difficult if a rathole develops. In one portion of the bin the level control device may indicate the bin is full; in another portion it may indicate it is empty. Eliminating Flow Problems All flow problems can be minimized or prevented by suitable design of the bin/feeder unit. This involves knowing the flow properties of the solid, then choosing the appropriate type of bin and feeder to establish the desired flow pattern. There are three types of flow patterns that may occur in a bin: funnel flow, mass flow, and expanded flow. Funnel flow occurs when some of the material in the bin is stationary while the rest is in motion. Funnel flow bins, shown in Fig. 1, are characterized by: • Low head room. A flat bottom or shallow hopper bin has large storage capacity with minimum height. Unfortunately, all this storage capacity may not be usable ("live"). • First-in-last-out flow sequence. The first material put into a funnel flow bin is the last material withdrawn because the flowing material is concentrated in the region directly above the outlet. • Ratholes. Because of the flow channel that forms, a stable rathole develops if the material has sufficient cohesive strength. • Erratic flow. Once a rathole becomes partially or completely empty, it may collapse creating a stable arch and erratic flow. • Flushing. Collapsing ratholes cause flushing and flooding of fine material. • Segregation. If a bulk solid has a tendency to segregate, this tendency will be accentuated as the material is discharged from a funnel flow bin. Funnel flow bins are suitable for coarse, free flowing, nondegrading solids, when segregation is not important. Mass flow occurs when all the material in a bin is in motion whenever any is withdrawn. Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. The use of graphite in industrial applications is one of the oldest in the world. Yet, it is one of the fastest-changing technologies today. Graphite was first used centuries ago in developing writing instruments and as a raw material in crucibles used in melting metal. Today, graphite is used in some of our most demanding industries. These include aerospace, electronics and automotive applications. Graphite usage has historically been split between the natural and synthetic forms. Figure 1 shows the breakdown of natural graphites and synthetic graphites used. The usage of natural graphites and synthetic graphites is split fairly evenly, although the applications are quite different. Figure 2 shows the breakdown of applications using natural graphite. The largest application is the refractory industry. This includes refractory brick and plastics, crucibles, shrouds and other refractory parts. This main application uses roughly 50% of all natural graphite. The refractory industry is an important application for natural graphite. However, the refractory markets have been struggling for several years. As demonstrated in Fig. 3 (Semler, 1996), the production of refractories in tons per year has declined by more than 32% during the last 25 years. Refractory prices have actually risen on a dollar per ton basis during that same period as the product mix has shifted to the value-added side. Raw material and production cost increases, inflation and other related costs have kept profitability at low levels for the industry. Furnace linings that once lasted 1,000-2,000 heats now last 8,000-12,000 heats. This means that tonnage requirements have gone down and quality requirements have gone up for graphite suppliers. Therefore, new opportunities and applications must be developed if the graphite industry is to grow. Synthetics are the other major forms of graphite. There are two forms of synthetic material currently used. One is the traditional type. It is made from the turnings of graphite electrode production. The second was developed in the mid-1970s in response to a shortage of conventional synthetic graphite. This occurred by a breakthrough in thermal technology. This new technology purifies, desulfurizes and graphitizes petroleum coke on a continuous basis at temperatures of more than 2,500° C (4,532° F). This product is called desulfurized petroleum coke (Desulco). It now accounts for about half of the synthetic type material used in the United States. Figure 4 shows the breakdown in the use of synthetic types of material by application. The largest requirement is for use as a carbon addition in iron and steel. This is followed by alkaline batteries and friction materials. Current technological opportunities New opportunities for graphite products are now being developed. These new areas are made possible due to the advances in graphite thermal technology. The ability to purify and modify graphite and carbon products is the key to future growth in the graphite industry. New, higher-purity, more consistent graphite products are leading to enhanced performance in current applications. They are also opening the door to new applications.
