Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution.. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated predominance diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

The number and the type of trucks and shovels are two important factors in determining the optimal design parameters of an open-pit mining system. Characteristics of trucks&apos; arrival and service-time distributions determine the performance measures of a truck-shovel system when it is modeled as a closed queuing network. In all of the previous analytical queuing studies of truck-shovel systems, trucks are assumed to be identical with respect to their arrival and service-time distributions. This assumption, although desirable for reducing computational difficulties, causes either underestimation or overestimation of the performance measures depending on the number and type of equipment used in the model. The relative error in performance measures could be significant when the number of different types of trucks and shovels is large. In this paper an analytical method is proposed to model the truck-shovel system as a multiple-chain closed queuing network. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures for planning purposes when the truck fleet is not necessarily composed of identical trucks. An example of truck-shovel systems is discussed to show how the incorporation of different types of trucks does affect performance measures.

Image processing is a technique that simulates the human vision system. This technique enables applying every statistical or intelligent operation to recognize differences. In this way this new technique is used in quality control systems in most industries. Studying sedimentary rocks is very important from the economic point of view. Some units of sedimentary sequences involve different mineral deposits, hydrocarbon and water resources. Therefore it is important to identify and classify different sedimentary rocks. Descriptive classification of sedimentary rocks is usually based on visual and textural features and chemical composition of a sample. In this paper different samples of a limestone mine in central part of Iran are classified. The samples were collected from different parts of the mine and crushed down in size from 2.58 cm to 3.58 cm. The rock samples were labeled based on percentage of chemical and lithological compositions. Each sample was assigned to one of the distinguished groups. The images of the samples were taken in appropriate environment and processed. A total of 74 features were extracted from the identified rock samples in all images. In order to feature dimensional decrease, principal component analysis method was used. Then Bayesian statistical algorithm was used as a useful tool for classification. Classification Correctness Rate (CCR), calculated for the test data sets are %88, %68, %61 and %72 for the first to fourth class respectively. Therefore it can be inferred that the extracted features of images are appropriate indicators for different samples identification. These precise results besides the advantages of image processing technique, which are increasing speed of operation and decreasing cost, appears to be a desirable success.

A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

The Moon Creek Reclamation Project provides a case study in the development of creative cleanup solutions for an abandoned lead and zinc mine and mill site located in northern Idaho. Innovative design features include construction of a 88,000cubic yard combined waste containment facility on soft in-situ tailings, water-balance cap, limestone gravel drains, a geocell mattress for stability, and a below-grade scour protection berm. The stream, including a wetlands buffer, will be relocated within an existing road alignment and rehabilitated to provide trout habitat. These elements allow for the integration of reclamation and stabilization measures into an effective site design.

Fault-slip bursts induced by mining activities can result in severe damage to nearby mine development. In general, engineers designing rock support in burst-prone mines not only need to consider stress redistribution resulting from excavation, but also dynamic loading that results from seismic waves generated by large mininginduced fault-slip events. In this study, we simulated dynamic waves in sedimentary rock from a blasting source and from a mining-induced-seismicity source using a Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) model with discrete fracture networks (DFNs). Our purpose was to investigate the stability of openings and the adequacy of existing support systems at an underground limestone mine in South Korea. A baseline model with only static loading was also simulated, which verified observed stability under such conditions. The results indicate that the current support system of shotcrete lining is likely to work well under dynamic loading caused by blasting. However, when the dynamic source was a far-field fault-slip event, the dynamic loading exceeded the support capacity of the shotcrete lining. Thus, if a mine is operating in ground with an elevated risk of mininginduced fault slip, mine engineers should consider seismic wave propagation and ground motion distribution from a remote, mining-induced fault-slip event to determine a suitable support design.

A number of small but rich copper sulfide (chalcocite) ore deposits are located on Michigan&apos;s Keweenaw Peninsula. These deposits are considered too small to warrant the capital investment required for conventional mining. However, they are being considered for in-situ solution mining as a way to revitalize the area&apos;s once prosperous copper extraction industry. Geology, mineralogy and geohydrology of the deposits have been investigated to determine their suitability for leaching; Three conclusions were drawn from the work. First, the sulfide mineralization is found primarily in fractures (65%) and, therefore, is accessible to injected leach solutions. Second, the ores are shallow, occurring from surface exposure to about 200 meters depth; injection and recovery wells would not have to be excessively deep. Third, the rock was found to have low permeability, in the neighborhood of thirty millidarcys or less. However, preliminary hydraulic fracturing experiments indicate that this will be an effective method for permeability enhancement. In one experiment a permeability increase of 100 times was achieved using a very low injection pressure at shallow depth. Additionally, fracture aperture spacings measured from drill core were correlated with fair success to field permeabilities.

IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. has developed ligands, ?amed SuperLig®, which have specific applications in the gold mdustry. These ligands use molecular recognition technology (MRT). One ligand has been developed to selectively recover gold and silver from tailings solutions and from pregnant Merrill-Crowe solutions. Another ligand removes free cyanide, _ th10cyanate, other cyanide species, as well as copper and other base metal cyanide complexes from leached gold-ore solutions. The development of these "species selective'' SuperLig® prod­ucts allows for the more efficient operation of gold recovery processes and opens up the possibility of the economic devel­opment of high-copper gold ores. The resulting gold eluate is a high grade and a high purity stream which will simplify the need for further refming. Engineered systems based on MRT consist of a few unit operations utilizing standard equipment and mate­rials of construction. The process is simple to operate, thereby lending itself to automated modular design, which is both eco­nomic to manufacture and to operate. Test results for the gold and cyanide-copper systems are presented in order to demonstrate the high selectivity and effi­ciency of MRT technology in recovering these species from solution. . IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. (IBC) and Fluor Daniel, Inc. formed a strategic alliance in late 1994. The goal of the alliance is to combine IBC's scientific expertise in the MRT field with Fluor Daniel's engineering capabilities in the metal­lurgical industry. In 2010, MSHA began holding hearings on a new coal mine respirable dust rule, which proposes a 1.0 mg/m3 standard, a separate 0.1 mg/m3 quartz standard, and the use of single-shift samples for compliance. Small mines largely comprise the ?hot spots? where dust diseases of the lungs increased dramatically over the past decade. This paper presents findings on the feasibility of small mines? compliance with the proposed new 1.0 mg/m3 standard. It gives probabilities of noncompliance by MSHA district, seam height, and selected ?hot spot? counties. Because silicosis and respirable quartz dust appear to be the primary issues related to a recent doubling of the prevalence of dust diseases of the lungs, multiple regression models for prediction of the average total quartz content of compliance samples are given. These findings have significant implications on the need for better dust control methods.

The production of kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America exceeds 13 million tons sold into higher value market segments. With a few exceptions, the markets supplied exhibit mature growth rates. In some market sectors, technology changes have and continue to occur shifting pigment-type consumption and growth. New sources of supply will impact current businesses. New product and process developments for kaolin and calcium carbonates are continuing. Each of these issues is examined in developing a view of the future for kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America.

The excavation-induced stresses transferred from the panels or pillars in upper coal seams play a key role in the occurrence of rockbursts in driving roadways during close-distance coal seam mining, which has become a common problem and threat to many underground mines. The authors established a 3D finite-difference numerical model via FLAC3D software using the closedistance coal seam mining conditions in the Zofiówka Mine as a case example to reveal the rockburst mechanism in such conditions. The excavation-induced vertical stresses are analyzed, which provides a basis to build a conceptual model to explain the possible source mechanism of the rockburst under such conditions. Nine typical rockburst indicators considering different contributing factors are then selected as the evaluation criteria to assess rockburst potential in the study site. The results suggest that the superposition of multiple excavation-induced stresses of the main drift and tailgate provides an environment for stress concentration and energy accumulation. The side abutment stress induced by mining in the upper coal seam has a “strengthening” effect to the rockburst occurrence. The great deviatoric stress induced by complex excavating situations is another important exterior cause. A strict calibration procedure should be implemented before using indicators to predict rockburst potential. A methodology was proposed to estimate the location and magnitude of rockbursts combined with numerical modeling, laboratory tests, and feedbacks from the field. The study could provide some references and guidelines for preventing and mitigating rockbursts in underground mines under similar engineering conditions.

They are there for the 66th Annual Colorado MPD Meeting held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs: three days of finely curated talks and social events where participation was strong, and information was exchanged and connections forged in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.Water, tailings and social licenseNot surprisingly, water management, with the associated issues of tailings and social license, was high on the minds of those present. The Mount Polley and Samarco tailings dam failures have had repercussions across the industry. “There are big challenges with respect to tailings, and social and environmental pressures to find better ways to treat them,” said Steve Hearn of Huntsman Corp., a view echoed by Bob Kilborn of Kilborn Group LLC. Metso Minerals director Keith Butler said, “Water conservation is a key issue today. Many mining activities are now located in remote areas, so it has social and economic impacts on mining operations.” For Brian Olson of Samuel Engineering, wastewater and reclaimed-water treatment is interesting.Fittingly, the first talk of the meeting was on dry stack tailings by Michael Blois of Takraf USA, who went over both the advantages and disadvantages. “The average now is over one tailings dam failure a year,” Blois said, “and that is one too many.” But the technology may not be the right fit for all projects. In his talk on the KSM project, Jay Layman, president and COO of Seabridge Gold, showed how it isn’t practical for KSM and how Seabridge reached the decision on a cyclone sand tailings managementfacility as the preferred management strategy.The luncheon keynote also dealt with a tailings pond spill, but of a different kind. Bob Schafer, chief executive of Eagle Mines Management, spoke on the federal missteps that led to the spill into the Animas River from the Gold King Mine, a mine that had been a dry mine throughout its life and up to the 1990s."

This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

For the year 1985, the U.S. coal industry produced 881 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite. Domestic consumption amounted to 814 million tons. The electric utilities consumed 689 million tons, almost 85 percent of total consumption, over 78 percent of production. In May, 1986, the NCA forecast that with moderate growth rate averaging 1.9% per year from 1985 through the year 2000, production could reach 1,176 billion tons and domestic consumption 1079 billion. The estimate for electric utilities indicate 924 million tons for the year of 2000, about the same percentage of production and consumption as now experienced. Before we consider the main topic of this paper, the cost of using high sulfur coal, let us examine the coal use patterns of the last 25 years, the changes in those patterns and consider the reasons for those changes. Table I shows those changes.

The close area! relationship of Cretaceous or later intrusive porphyries to larger hydrothermal deposits of Pb, Zn, Au, fig, Cu, Mo, Hg,, and U of similar age in the Basin Range Province, was statistically shown in a recent paper (Stringham1) During the past year this study has been expanded to cover p11 of the larger hydrothermal deposits of similar nature occurring in the entire western United States. The sandstone type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau and Wyoming have been excluded since considerable controversy exists regarding their origin. The close relationship between intrusives in general and hydrothermal ore deposits has long been-recognized, but the association involving intrusive porphyry only, was suggested in 1954 when Sales concluded that the formation of porphyry may be an intermediate stage of activity between the development of granitoid rock and certain types of copper deposits. However: he applied this concept to only a few copper deposits. The relationship appears to be true also for a great majority of the hydrothermal deposits of the other metals mentioned above of Cretaceous and later age, at least in the western United States. This situation then leads to the conclusion then when exploring for similar types of hydrothermal deposits of the metals considered one may feel reasonably sure that if an intrusive porphyry of considerable size is. not present he may be facing much greater risk of finding an ore body than if a prophyry were presents Since, there are many intrusive porphyritic rocks which do not seem to be associated with hydrothermal deposit, it is believed that some distinct value can come from the recognition of intrusive porphyry which might be barren as well as the intrusive prophyry which might be productive This paper deals with that problem.

In the following brief history of the mine acquisitions of one company, Placer Development Limited, I try to identify the principal targeting parameters and the principal skills that came into play for each property and examine how these have changed with time. The process of target selection in exploration is directed: - first by corporate investment criteria which define objectives and acceptable levels of risk for pursuit of those objectives; - second by experience and skills which permit us to minimize risk; and - third by anticipation of future events relating to ore discoveries and changes in external risk factors.

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an open-pit mine has several challenges. A good quality mesh of the model domain is a pre-requisite for convergence in solution. Good quality tetrahedral meshing and insertion of prism layers in faceted open-pit mine geometry is complicated due to presence of numerous vertices and ridges. Presence of vertices and ridges result in poor quality tetra elements and holes in prism layers, which cause instability in the model. Good quality pit bottom prism mesh elements significantly improve the formation of velocity boundary layer and thermal boundary layer at the pit bottom. This results in an expected temperature dependent micrometeorological buoyancy flow in the pit. Whereas, model geometry without a prism layer, results in abrupt temperature gradient near pit bottom. Buoyancy flow and recirculation have significant effect in lifting mechanism of fugitive dust particles generated near pit bottom. Representative initial and boundary conditions and selection of appropriate turbulence model have significant influences on the simulation results. In this paper, three-dimensional models of open-pit mines are developed using commercial CFD software (CRADLE-CFD). Important constraints and various consequences in modeling complex open-pit geometries are presented. INTRODUCTION Application of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model an open-pit mine to predict fugitive dust and pollutant concentrations in and around a mine is relatively new. In former Soviet republic (USSR), Baklanov [1] and Belousov [2, 3] presented numerical models of pollutant transport in open-pit mines in Arctic regions. In recent years, advances in mathematical and computational fields have enabled better modeling of pollutant dispersion phenomenon around mines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several CFD software packages have been used by various researchers to model the pollutant transport in open-pit mines. Works by Alvarez et al. [4]; Lowndes et al. [5]; Silvester et al. [6]; Torno et al. [7]; Choudhury and Bandopadhyay [8]; Collingwood et al. [9]; Raj et al. [10] and Flores et al. [11]; are examples of application of various commercial and open source CFD packages (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These researches provided a strong background for additional research involving CFD modeling of open-pit mines. Due to the limitations of computational times and capacity, 3D modeling and various aspects of fugitive dust dispersion in open-pit mines remained unexplored."

One of the key elements of change in the mining industry has been the ever-increasing integration and coordination of previously highly segregated business disciplines, the extent to which the marketing and finance functions have evolved and merged within the mining industry. If one listens to the language of mine product marketers today, one hears terms like contango, backwardation, forwards, options, min/max, synthetics, swaptions, caps, collars, FRA&apos;s, spot deferreds, double bottom, head and shoulders. The list is endless and a glossary may be out-of-date even before the ink is dry. No longer can a marketer of mine products get through the day and, more importantly, keep his or her job merely by reciting statistics on supply, demand, prices and the jargon of quotational periods, delivery and payment terms. Walk into the office of any marketing department today, and computer terminals spewing on-line market prices and instantaneous news retrieval command the attention of all who enter. Traditionally, mining companies, particularly those in North America, took a passive view toward marketing their products and an even more passive view toward management of price risk. The typical, albeit simplified, gold producer of the 1970s and early 1980s spent all of its energy exploring, delineating, developing and producing a product that was placed by the mine gate. Like magic, anonymous buyers took it away and left piles of dollars in its place. No fuss, no muss and nothing to get in the way of more exploring, delineating, producing etc. The typical copper producer, meanwhile, was slightly more creative. Copper producers still spent most of their energy exploring, producing etc., but they at least acknowledged the identity of their customers. Many even went so far as to fabricate finished mine products into shapes and sizes that their ultimate customer needed. Wire, cable, sheet and extrusions were all in forms ready to be purchased by power companies, motor manufacturers and telephone companies. But, while production and costs steadily increased, research and development into new expanding markets was funded by little more than lip service. Competitors and competitive products steadily eroded market share and realized prices. The now-famous Business Week magazine cover that proclaimed "The Death of Mining" was an imminent reality.

Many of the common valuable minerals have a magnetic susceptibility which is sufficiently high to render them amenable to magnetic separation. In addition,, many minerals which form the unwanted constituents of an ore can be removed by magnetic means. Magnetic separation in general has suffered seriously from, the lack of a high intensity wet separator. It is only recently that such a separator has become available to the industry. Prior to this, high intensity magnetic separation has been limited to the use of the dry techniques. Since the introduction of the Jones Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator, extensive test work has been conducted to investigate possible applications. From the investigations conducted and the discussions that have taken place in the industry, it is apparent that the important mineral characteristic of magnetic susceptibility is not receiving the attention that it deserves. Applications for high intensity wet separation are being found in areas hitherto not considered.
