The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

Strip mining with draglines and other surface equipment has traditionally been the method of choice for mining shallow deposits. This is particularly true for soft deposits that require little or no blasting. High rates of productivity and low operating costs have set this standard. However, these methods can be improved. Strip mining methods are batch processes and difficult to accommodate in processing. Moreover, they are encumbered with overburden removal, reclamation expense, and human inefficiencies. This paper describes the invention of a novel shallow earth mining technique called the Softwall Mining Method. Softwall Mining is an adaptation of longwall mining for loose earth conditions. The method was specifically invented for recovering phosphatic clay ore from beds in North Central Florida, but is likely to be suitable for a number of other minerals as well. Potential deposits for which the method may be well suited include placers, disseminated deposits in soft host rocks, bauxite, soft coals and lignite deposits, and other deposits where overburden will subside readily and where the ore can be hydraulically broken and slurried. Unit operating cost advantages are expected over the current dragline systems used. The Softwall mining advantages are its high rates of productivity, control and automation of the mining process, reduction of dilution and waste, and elimination of the majority of stripping and reclamation.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3,000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts; and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s). INTRODUCTION Roof bolting machines are used to drill bolt holes into the roof of an underground mine at specified patterns and to install roof bolts to secure the roof from falling. At times, the roof bolting machine is also used to install rib bolts; however, only the roof bolting operation was considered in this simulation. Though the roof bolting operation drastically improved the safety of miners from roof falls, some roof bolter operators are experiencing health problems associated with respirable dust. Based on recent statistics [1], following a low point in the late 1990s where the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) in miners with 25 years or more tenure was approximately 5%, CWP now exceeds 10% for miners with 25 years or more of tenure. In central Appalachia (Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia), 20.6% of long-tenured miners have CWP and 4.5% have progressive massive fibrosis, the most severe form of CWP. CWP, also known as black lung, is an occupational respiratory disease that has no cure and can ultimately be fatal. The only way to prevent the incidence of black lung is to eliminate miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Current U.S. regulations require that the overall respirable dust concentration to be 1.5 mg/m3 or less for a full-shift sampling if respirable quartz is not present; otherwise, the standard is 10 divided by the percent quartz (not to exceed the 1.5 mg/m3 respirable dust standard) [2, 3].

A laboratory investigation of flocculation following polymer addition during slurry flow through pipes and in-line (static) mixers is described. Results are presented showing the effects of flow velocity, pipe length, in-line mixer elements and the use of multiple addition points on flocculation performance as measured by settling rate and supernatant turbidity. The effects of agitation and mixing time are shown to be generally consistent with the results of equivalent tests, both batch and continuous, conducted in stirred tanks.

Heap leaching has become one of the prime technologies used for the recovery of precious metals from low-grade ores over the past ten years. The recovery process involves mining and stacking the ore on engineered leach pads, with or without crushing and/or agglomeration, followed by leaching with a low concentration sodium cyanide solution. The metal-bearing, pregnant solution is then processed by zinc precipitation or activated carbon absorption to extract the precious metals. The leaching process continues until all economic metal values are removed at which time the spent heap leach pads, the leached materials and excess process solutions require decommissioning. The management of these solutions may present a potential challenge for successful and environmentally sound decommissioning due to their composition, volume or continuity of generation from the spent ore even though active leaching has been terminated. The principal objectives of solution management in decommissioning spent heap leach pads are to meet all operative environmental regulations in a cost-effective manner and to leave the pads in a condition where they do not present a long-term liability either to the operator or to the environment. This involves the reduction in volume of the residual process solutions and/or treatment of these solutions to where they meet applicable water quality criteria. In the past, the environmental and economic aspects of decommissioning and solution management have been overlooked or under-estimated during the planning of mining operations. As a result, there is a potential for long-term liabilities and costs to be recognized only at the end of active leaching, a time at which operating revenues and cash-flow are minimal. Therefore, the decommissioning process requires addressing at the mine planning stage and agencies now require that a plan for solution management after the cessation of operations be submitted prior to initiation of mining. This paper discusses aspects of process solution management during decommissioning, both in terms of quantity and quality, and how potential issues may be recognized and planned for in the initial stages of heap leach design.

On the basis of favorable salt characteristics, primarily compressive strength and impermeability, solution-mined cavities can provide structurally stable isolation chambers for waste. Solution mining techniques are established for storage of hydrocarbons. The proposition of waste isolation in engineered salt cavities is similar to this practice relative to characterization, certification and safeguards. What materials are isolated and how operations are conducted are principle differences. Compatibility of wastes with other wastes must be considered, but hazards can be precluded by avoiding certain mixtures. Waste material characteristics and cavity considerations are discussed.

The two types of dryers used in the drying of copper concentrates are the rotary dryer and the spray dryer. The rotary dryer has until recent history been the traditional drying method used, Although spray dryers have been used in the chemical field for many years it is only recently that they have been accepted for drying of copper concentrates. The comparison made here will apply in a narrower sense to the drying of copper concentrates as fed into the reverbatory furnaces of the Smelter. To compare a rotary dryer and a spray dryer, which are two totally different methods and pieces of equipment, it is best to view them as systems each made up of certain elements

Mining of a bedded barite deposit exposed highly pyritic siliceous sediments which have weathered and degraded subsurface and surface waters. The ph, sulfate, and total dissolved solids are the most seriously affected parameters. Several solutions were tried and eventually horizontal holes were drilled into the mine wall to draw down the water table and decrease the movement of groundwater through oxidizing zones opened up by the mining operation. Areas of surface disturbance were capped with layers of soil, bentonite, and gravel to decrease the infiltration of water into the disturbed areas. These actions have begun to decrease sulfate and total dissolved solids concentrations and increase ph values.

Diesel fuel usage in the mining industry continues to escalate. This is because approximately 60 percent of all mined materials are surface extracted by large equipment using diesel fuel, which continues to increase in cost per gallon. For example, coal mining uses large equipment such as wheel loaders, wheel dozers, draglines and [ ] dredgers. In one year, three of the largest U.S. coal mining operations consumed approximately 567 million to 852 million L (150 million to 225 million gal) of diesel. At an approximate cost average of $3.25/gal the expenditure on diesel is $487 million to $731 million per year. So, are there any solutions that could reduce this cost burden? Yes, there are. Coal mining companies can extract less ore; use more efficient extracting equipment that consumes less fuel; wait for a significant reduction in the cost of fuel; or find and use technology that would create efficiencies that would lower the cost. Nanotechnology is one such technology that might provide the means to create the efficiencies that will significantly lower diesel fuel costs.

Considering the nature of open pit mines, harvest volume, it usually is required to remove a lot of waste to access to mineral planned grade. So, one of the most important part of open pit mines design, is waste dump site selection. Many factors are effective in waste dump site selection. These factors are sometimes in conflict with each other. So selecting the desired location for waste dump is a process complex and multi-criteria decision making. There are a variety of methods for decision making under complicated condition, such as fuzzy, Delphi, multi-criteria decision making and Expert system methods can be hinted. VIKOR method, which is one of the decision making multi criteria methods, is useful tool for decision-making. On the other hand with regard to uncertainty in decision-making, fuzzy approach is a useful tool for this purpose. This article has tried to select the best waste dump site in Sari Gunay Gold Mine by Fuzzy VIKOR. The results show that C position has a higher priority than other positions.

Health and Safety in the work place is of primary concern to the underground coal industry. Control of dust in the underground environment is of major importance in this concern. Utah Power and Light Mining Division has undertaken extensive studies to determine and control the various sources of respirable dust in underground high production sections. Determination of dust sources has been achieved by real-time aerosol sampling and standard gravimetric sampling on individuals and in various suspect locations. Some sources are diesel roadway dust, outby crushing, and handling equipment, face sloughing, water spray roll-back, and mining equipment. Once identified, the dust sources are suppressed or controlled and/or the workers are directed from areas of greatest potential exposure.

The particular impact of imported industrial minerals varies within the Industry and is dependent upon many diverse factors. In a similar way, the impact on individuals has been varied and the degree of impact will depend partially on the individual's ability to handle change. Just as many corporations are adjusting their marketing strategy and production methods to compensate for imported mineral products; individual managers, mining engineers and geologists are making adjustments to their own personal job marketing techniques and on-the-job operating procedures. Modifying the degree of impact for both industry and individuals depends upon the ability to adapt.

The Zurichberg twin track tunnel is the main segment of the Swiss Federal Railway's new expressline. A heavy concrete lining with a circular cross-section was chosen to cope with the swelling tendency of the surrounding rock. The 4,356 m (14,300 ft) long, 11.52 m (38 ft) diameter tunnel was driven using a shielded Robbins TBM. A 1.20 m (4 ft) wide, 25 cm (10 in) thick precast lining was placed from within the shield tail as the excavation progressed. Tunnel excavation and initial lining operation were completed in 18 months, averaging 11.86 m/day (40 ft/day) in two nine hour shifts. After breaking through, the final 28 cm (11 in) thick concrete arch lining was cast in place.

This chapter discusses the necessary construction techniques for installing coal mine ventilation devices. Included in the discussion are the major air controlling devices called over- casts, regulators, stoppings, and doors. Under-casts, although a valid device, are used infrequently in coal mining and are not discussed here. Typically, coal mines require a great many ventilation devices to control the air movement. Post-I969 mines have had to design their air systems to comply with the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (CMHSA) as discussed in Chap. 1. Pre- 1969 mines have had to redesign major portions of their systems to comply with the basic components of the law such as separation of air courses, single unit split ventilation, and minimum air quantities. It is not uncommon, therefore, to find a large mine (2.0 Mt/a) requiring several hundred overcast installations (permanent, as well as repeat construction), plus doors and regulators placed among a thousand or more stoppings. When each of these devices is subject to leakage from installation and weathering defects, the importance of effective construction becomes evident. An historic rule of thumb for average mine ventilation says that about 70% of all the air pressure generated by the mine fan is lost between the portal and the working faces. Of course, this rule is subject to many factors, but the message is clear: there is a tremendous inefficiency in controlling leakage through common air devices. This chapter strives to present a standard approach and design alternatives which can go a long way in reducing this leakage, and hence, ventilation costs. Historically, mine ventilation has progressed from natural, or draft ventilation, to fire-induced ventilation (Fig. l), furnace-fired centrifugal fans and finally, to today's modem mine fans. Underground controlling devices have been in use in the coal mines since the late 1600s, but the CMHSA of 1969 was the real turning point for mine ventilation. Minimum quantities and velocities of fresh air were required for mining, forcing coal operators and engineers to reevaluate and improve their systems. As a consequence, the cost for ventilating air increased. Today, companies face a variety of choices among design alternatives, materials, labor, and costs of ventilating devices for their mines. The best approach for any individual company or mine is determined by (1) the needs of the mine, and (2) the local design parameters. In my discussions of ventilation construction I shall be fairly general in terms of device installation steps, where specifics are warranted for clarification, I will include this information.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. Traveling through the moors and valleys of Cornwall, England, one is reminded of the extensive mining activities of the past. Abandoned shafts, remains of granite block wheel houses and engine houses, battered brick stacks, old calciners, overgrown water wheel pits, count house remains, overgrown waste pits, and old portals are gaunt monuments to a once flourishing mining industry. Cornwall is bordered on the north by Devon and occupies the south-western most tip of Great Britain. The Atlantic Ocean borders the promontory; to the north, the mouth of the famous Bristol Channel faces the open sea; and to the south, the English Channel separates the land masses of Great Britain and Europe. This part of England is probably the most extensively mined ground in all of Europe. Such great mines as Dolcoath and Wheel Vor, Consols and South Carodan, Levant and Bottalack, remain legendary in the annals of metal mining in the nineteenth century. Many US mining districts hold close ties with Cornwall, Devon, and Wales through ancestors who emigrated from there to work in US mines in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Their descendants can be found in many major US mining districts, and their terms, expressions, customs, and methods have left an impact on the US mining scene that remains with us today.

The Esmeralda mine is located about three miles west of the town of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Northern Mexico, and about 400 miles south of El Paso, Texas. The area is serviced by the Interamerican Highway and a branch line of the National Railways of Mexico. The Parral district is quite typical of the semidesert of Northern Mexico, lying near the western margin of the Chihuahua basin and range province known in Mexico as the ?Mesa Central? In the immediate mine area, low rounded hills and rolling plans slope toward the Parral River. Surface elevation at the mine is 5,800 feet. The Esmeralda vein outcrops strongly, but was too low grade to be of interest to the Spaniards, The first claims were staked in 1897 and limited exploration work to a depth of 550 feet was carried out prior to 1912, at which time work was suspended. The Eagle-Picher Company acquired the property in 1944 and by surface diamond drilling outlined an orebody to a depth of 800 feet, Minas de Iguala, S. A, de C.V., one of Eagle-Picher?s totally owned subsidiary companies in Mexico, then unwatered the old workings, developed the mine, installed a modern differential flotation plant and started production lage in 1948. To the present, more than two and ahalf million tons of ore have been mined and milled producing lead and zinc concentrates.

Spontaneous combustion fires in deep metal mines, through relatively infrequent, are nonetheless cause for considerable concern because they pose a direct threat to the safety of miners and are quite disruptive to mine operations. They often occur in remote, inactive, or abandoned sectors of a mine where access for firefighting is difficult or impossible. Over half of all noncoal mine fires that last more than 24 hours are caused by spontaneous combustion. The most common means of fire control for spontaneous combustion fires is sealing and/or Flooding the affected zone. This process is never easy, but it is made especially difficult (and hazardous) if the fire grows in size and intensity to the point where underground fire- fighting crews must wear self-contained breathing apparatus owing to mine air contamination. The Bureau of Mines has developed and in-mine tested a mineworthy fire detection system capable of sensing the earliest traces of spontaneous combustion, thus enabling mine personnel to initiate fire control operations before hazardous atmospheres are created. This paper discusses system design within the context of the harsh mine environment, and describes laboratory and in-mine performance tests of prototype equipment.

Introduction Loss prevention programs have become absolutely necessary at any precious metals producing property. In the past eight years, one security company, specializing in precious metals mine, mill, and refinery security, has been involved in investigations at gold and silver properties that have resulted in 62 criminal convictions. Of those, all but five were employees, former employees, contract employees, or vendors for the company. Several of the cases involved losses of more than $1 million. The largest number of employees prosecuted from one investigation was 17. A recent case resulted in 12 criminal prosecutions and, several years ago, one involved an additional 12 criminal prosecutions. The most serious theft problem facing precious metals mines is employee theft. Is is estimated that 95% of the dollar losses from precious metals thefts can be attributed to employees. This does not mean there is no robbery or burglary exposure. There have been successful robberies, burglaries, and extortion cases. Most mining companies, though, provide better protection against external theft than from internal theft. That is one reason employee theft has reached epidemic proportions. Any product can be stolen No product is immune to theft. Precious metals investigations have involved the theft of high grade ore, dore, bullion, concentrates, precipitates, loaded steel wool, loaded carbon, and sump cleanup. Over a period of several years, this author's security agency has documented the theft of more than 22.5 t (25 st) of load carbon. Most mining companies do not protect the number one adsorption tank or the loaded carbon screens, which frequently leads to losses. Precipitates, electrowinning tank sludge, sump material, and concentrates are usually afforded lit¬tle protection because mine management believes it is too difficult to process. There are custom mills throughout the United States that will process any form of precious metals with no questions asked. This has become a particular problem since the certificate of ownership requirement has been eliminated by most states. Due to the large number of gold mines coming on line, many mine managers are being recruited from base metal mines, where primary security problems involve the theft of tools and company property. These managers do not understand the unique security problems associated with precious metals production. Consequently, they usually forego many security needs in the interest of economy. Unfortunately, numerous cases are on file where mining companies have suffered large losses because their physical security and their security procedures were not adequately addressed when the property was in its planning stages.
