Over the years, screen bowl centrifuges have been widely used for dewatering fine coal in coal preparation plants in the United States and elsewhere. Its popularity is attributed to its relatively low cost, its high capacity of providing low moisture content product and its relative ease of operation and maintenance. It is generally recognized in the engineering and scientific communities that screen bowl centrifuges provide some degree of particle size separation while dewatering fine coal in a common application. However, the extent of differential partitioning of coarse and fine particles achievable by a screen bowl centrifuge has not been systematically studied in the past. The present investigation was aimed at conducting a parametric study using a statistically designed experimental program to better understand and optimize the size classification performance of a screen bowl centrifuge. A continuously operating screen bowl centrifuge having a bowl diameter of 0.5 m was used for this study at the Illinois Coal Development Park. Three key operating parameters, i.e., feed flow rate, feed solid content and pool depth, were varied to conduct a total of 17 experiments using a three-level factorial test matrix. Some of the best size separation performances achieved in this study may be described as having an imperfection value of 0.13 at an effective separation size (d50c) of 38 µm and an imperfection value of 0.27 at an effective separation size (d50c) of 2.8 µm. Due to an effective separation of ultrafine high ash materials, the ash content of the screen bowl feed was reduced from 22.3% to a minimum of 8.84% with a combustible recovery of 84.1% and an ash rejection of 71.6%. A higher combustible recovery of 92.1% was achieved at a product ash content of 12.5% with a d50c of 2.8 µm and imperfection of 0.27.

Earl C. Herkenhoff Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95 % of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978, "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuter. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high solids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95°C (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate -about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: • What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? • Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60-62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. Miller We, too, share Mr. Herkenhoff s enthusiasm for the mining of tar sands-heavy oil and continue the development of related processing technology. Specifically, it will be noted that by appropriate control of bitumen viscosity in the feed (probably the most important variable for successful separation) the recovery can be accomplished at low digestion temperature and low addition of alkali. A 91 t/d (100 stpd) pilot plant based on our technology is now being operated by Enercor in Salt Lake City (Hatfield, Oblad, and Miller, 1982). In these same pilot facilities, rougher concentrates containing more than 80% bitumen on a dry basis are being produced from Asphalt Ridge Feed. However, the processing of certain other tar sands results in incomplete digestion of bitumen/sand aggregates as discussed elsewhere (Miller and Misra, 1982). Such undigested aggregates are shown in Fig. 1. In this regard, it is intended that a recycle stream will be installed in the pilot plant to provide for redigestion of middling products. Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

Research was conducted in which elemental mercury and its sulfide mineral (cinnabar) are removed from a copper sulfide concentrate by low temperature thermal applications. The goal of this research was to reduce, volatilize, and collect mercury vapor from concentrated smelter feed in a simulated drying environment while maintaining the chemical integrity of the residual. The study used synthesized concentrates composed of copper sulfide and mercury bearing minerals (such as cinnabar (HgS) or elemental mercury) to determine optimal residence times and temperature ranges.

Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM) analyses of sediment samples from coastal regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu states and the heavy mineral deposits of Chavara, South India, show large lateral differences in the titanium content in ilmenite due to varying degrees of iron leaching. As the depositional environments for the sands with varying degrees of ilmenite alteration are comparable, the cause for the different degree of alteration is due to differences in the primary source of the ilmenite or to differences in the geochemical history of the ilmenite grains during transport from source to deposit. The CCSEM analyses of the heavy mineral fractions show that source of sediments with a high content of titanium-enriched ilmenites, mainly the heavy mineral deposit around Chavara, resides in the khondalite belt of South India (granulite facies metasediments). The less titanium-enriched ilmenites are sourced from other rocks in the area such as the charnokites. Those conclusions are based on the high MgO content in the leached ilmenites, chemical composition of the accompanying garnets (low CaO and high MgO), and the concentration of aluminum-rich minerals in the sands.

The solution of the dynamic population balance model (PBM) of a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone is problematic. The fact that the dynamic PBM model equation solution to the Inverse Problem for grinding systems is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Two numerical solution approaches to the Inverse Problem are used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data is used to demonstrate the non-unique functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. Different solutions to the same PBM transport equations are provided. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Two different solutions were obtained depending on the numerical solution approach. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

"INTRODUCTION Typically waterproofing of conventionally excavated tunnels has been done by installing pre-fabricated sheet membranes between the primary temporary support lining and the secondary permanent inner lining. The membrane acts as a separation or sliding layer between the linings, which is often desirable. The geotextile installed behind the sheet membrane provides the required drainage and protection of the system. The design of the tunnel lining is strongly influenced and limited by the use of waterproofing sheet membranes. Since primary and secondary linings are separated from each other, forming a double-shell lining system. In that case the secondary lining must be designed for all permanent loads, although the sprayed concrete primary lining continues resists ground and water loads for a long time after construction. Significant progress has been made in sprayed concrete technology over the last two decades, with advanced admixtures, as well as the improved application technology using spraying robots. The development of new admixtures like superplasticizers based on poly-carboxylates, alkali free accelerators and silica fume, enables designers to use permanent sprayed concrete linings (SCL) increasingly for long-term service life. When designed and applied correctly, sprayed concrete can be considered as permanent. The use of spray applied membranes has seen increased use over the last decade in some countries, and demonstrated functionality and cost-effectiveness in several situations. This paper describes the use of the sprayed waterproofing membrane MasterSeal 345, an EVA polymer based product, and the practical experiences from several projects. SPRAY APPLIED WATERPROOFING MEMBRANES The sprayed waterproofing membrane is polymer based and has been especially developed for underground structures. The membrane is applied between primary and secondary concrete linings and develops high bond strength on both sides to the concrete (doubled-bonded)."

An innovative approach in designing the haulage systems for underground coal mines is discussed in this paper. The haulage systems are formed by serially connected components. Therefore an economic and efficient design of the entire system is necessary. The computer model that uses a heuristic algorithm solves this design problem globally in a single run. It is a probabilistic model because it considers the probabilistic aspects of face operations. It is versatile because it can accommodate any type of mining and belt conveyor network configuration. The hoisting section can be used to design drum or friction hoisting systems for single or multiple level operations. These systems can have two skips in balance or a skip and a counterweight in balance. The model also has the option to internally determine the capacity of bunker(s) and shaft-bottom bin. The objective is to minimize the expected cost per ton of coal hauled from the coal faces to the surface. At the end of the paper is an example that illustrated the capabilities of the model.

"Temporary retaining walls are ordinarily used for tunnel construction work conducted using the opencut construction method. Retaining walls in such instances are typically installed vertically. However, shoring (such as struts and king posts) is required to ensure the stability of retaining walls in cases of excavation work to depths that exceed approximately 4 m. A new design and construction method that focuses on the effectiveness of retaining walls that are installed on an incline was studied with the aim of improving construction workability by omitting shoring. The inclined braceless excavation support (IBES) method, which was developed for use with the inclined buttress method, requires no shoring, even for deep-open-cut construction work and can be applied to deep excavation work on ground with a high groundwater level. This method has been applied at six work sites in Japan in recent years. This paper introduces the IBES design and construction method and presents verification results based on the design method, a model experiment, finite element analysis, and measurements obtained during construction work.INTRODUCTIONBackgroundIn the past, temporary retaining walls used in open-cut construction work have been installed vertically, and shoring (such as struts and king posts) has typically been used to ensure the stability of these retaining walls when the excavation depth reached 3–4 m. As a result, there has been a demand for ways to reduce or eliminate shoring to improve the quality of structures and construction work efficiency."

Recognition of mineralogical and chemical zoning patterns associated with mineralization is an integral part of mineral exploration. Even though the origin of zoning may not always be known, zoning patterns as expressed by the systematic distribution of ore and gangue minerals, alteration or elemental assays (soil and rock geochemistry) have received much attention and are extremely useful in guiding exploration efforts toward locating economic mineralization. By contrast, the potential of using zoning information recorded in solid-solution minerals to address practical geological-engineering problems has received less attention. Solid-solution minerals can provide critical information for common problems faced in exploration, mine development and valuation. Mineral zoning information from solid-solution minerals can now be easily obtained because advances in electron microprobe instrumentation have made these instruments a most efficient, accurate, economical and practical tool for analysis of large numbers of samples. Now entire mines and districts can be studied in a timely and cost-effective manner as required by modern mineral exploration and mining practice. This article shows how knowledge of the composition of fahlore minerals can be used in addressing important problems in exploration, development and valuation. Situations are described in which drilling intersected "low grade zones" (Case one: Orcopampa, Peru, precious metal system) and where there was a need to determine the "lateral correlation of multiple ore intercepts" (Case two: Sheep Creek, Montana, sediment-hosted sulfide deposit).

Coal cleaning with traditional magnetic separation usually yields unsatisfactory results because minerals associated with coal, such as quartz, clay, pyrite and calcite, are weak-or non-magnetic. Magnetic reagent technology is a new mineral processing technology with the capability to enhance the magnetic property of minerals selectively. This reagent can be adsorbed selectively on minerals through the control of surface chemistry and, thus, result in selective magnetic enhancement. The application of this technology on coal cleaning has been experimentally demonstrated. Good separation results can be obtained at low to medium magnetic field strength. Comparison with other processing technologies is included.

"Very low strength alluvial peat soil was found under two old drainage galleries with just 4.3m cover above a twin tunnel due to be excavated by a 10.6m diameter EPB Shield for São Paulo Metro’s Line 5. Alignment was required to strengthen soil and drive the TBM through safely without damaging the galleries. The design included six levels of self-drilling forepoling with lengths up to 15m, using 100 mm-diameter SCH160 metal tubing and injection bulbs with estimated 0.20m diameter. Two 6m-diameter circular shafts were excavated along the shield-tunnel axis, one each side of the galleries, and forepoling fanned out under gallery foundations. Given the peculiar soil and confined working space, more data were needed for correct drilling geometry. Ground mass treatment was successfully designed and executed and galleries were fitted with instruments to enable the shield’s advance. DESCRIPTION São Paulo Metro’s Line 5 (aka Lilas or purple line) is adding 11 stations along an 11.5km extension and three EPB TBMs are being used simultaneously (three EPBs on the same job for the first time in Brazil) with one of them excavating a large cross- section twin-track tunnel. Currently the largest work-in-progress for São Paulo Metro, this project has been divided into seven lots and 9km are already operational. This study refers to Lot 6 where the 10.6m - diameter EPB shield excavation is only 4.3m below two galleries running through a 10m layer of very soft peat soil in an old alluvial riverside region ringed by major roads. After recent filling, this area (Parque das Bicicletas) was used for recreation, although temporarily it has become a construction site. This paper will describe the original basic design; precautions in relation to the structural condition of the galleries after inspection; the problem of absence of data for their foundations; subsoil bore tests; evolution of the engineering design for the galleries and conditioning and reinforcing the soft soil below the galleries to ensure safe advance of the EPB shield, and finally the successful outcome of the solution used."

The dissolution process of phosphate rock from the Semikan area (Mardin-Mazidagi, Turkey) using dilute phosphoric acid has been investigated. The work involved studying the effect of important variables, such as reaction time, stirring speed, particle size fraction, phosphoric acid concentration and temperature. Van der Sluis et al.?s model was used to determine the rate of the partial dissolution of phosphate ore. Mass-transfer coefficients (kL) varied between 2.8 and 28.5.10-3 m.s-1. The activation energy of the process varied between 16 and 20 kJ.mol-1. It has been found that the dissolution process is controlled by calcium ion diffusion, rather than by chemical reaction.

In recent years, several geotechnical methods have been successfully applied to ash pond closure. These include modified dewatering techniques with wellpoints and wells to physically drain the material, soil mixing to create a soil-concrete material for improved accessways as well as improved ground structures within ponds to act as barriers or gravity dams, and geotechnical instrumentation to serve as an early warning of the potential for liquefaction. Given the parallels between fly ash and sluiced in place mine tailings, the application of fly ash remediation method to mine tailings shows significant potential, as illustrated in this paper.

Acid-activated montmorillonite is used worldwide as a catalyst and as a sorbent for the enhancement and purification of petroleum products as well as vegetable and animal-based fats. The solid-acid character of the activated montmorillonite is imparted by the manufacturing process, giving it unique properties that are exploited in these industries. Several international companies and a multitude of local clay producers are focusing on improving the efficiency of their standard and specialized products. This paper will describe the use of acid-activated montmorillonite in traditional sorbent applications, as a solid acid catalyst, and other new uses.

On July 30, 1979 New Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations for implementing the procedural provisions of the decade-old National Environmental Policy Act went into effect. These new regulations replace approximately seventy different sets of agency regulations, providing some uniformity throughout the Federal government in the conduct of environmental reviews and preparation of environmental impact statements (EIS). This attempt by the Federal government at a general improvement in the preparation and quality of EIS's presents an opportunity for the mining industry to evaluate how the EIS process for mining proposals can be expedited. The environmental impact statement is often a key element on the critical path of a major mining project. Preparation of the EIS is ordinarily the responsibility of the Federal agency with primary decision-making authority over the project. Still, the proponent, i.e. the mining company, can play a major role in the process and have a major impact on the timeliness and adequacy of the effort. Typically, the Proponent will conduct (or will hire consultants to conduct) environmental baseline studies of, for example, air quality, wildlife, geology, water quality, vegetation and archaeology. These studies are then compiled into an environmental report and submitted to the agency. The agency verifies the data and incorporates them into the environmental impact statement.

A national survey, 1978-1980, found 180,973 waste impoundments used by industrial mining, municipal and other interests. Possibly 27,000 contain hazardous materials. The potential hazard of leaks polluting water supplies is a growing concern. An electrical technique was developed to efficiently and speedily detect and locate leaks in geomembrane-lined liquid impoundments without emptying the contents. A potential applied between the liquid and earth causes electric current to flow through leaks in the insulating geomembrane material to ground. The cur- rent density around the leak is used to detect and locate the leak. Field tests show single and multiple leaks 2.54 cm in diameter or less can be detected and located to within less than 30 cm.

Usually stresses generated by explosive charges during blasting are considered to propagate through materials in a spherical manner. Although conical stress-waves had been suggested by a few investigators they have never been clearly defined or critically observed. An experimental technique using models and lengths of Mild Detonating Fuse was developed to produce conical stress-waves and study their effects. Several materials with different properties were tested to compare the influence of those properties on wave shape and crater formation. The investigations showed that whenever column charges were end-initiated, conical stress-forms were produced if the explosive's velocity exceeded the energy propagation velocity of the surrounding material. The stress-cone angle significantly affected fragment size and shape as well as the geometry of craters produced.

The open stope room and pillar method of mining is used throughout Ozark Lead Company's underground mine located at Sweetwater, Missouri. This method of mining produces an approximate overall ore extraction of 80%. Pillar recovery, on a limited and experimental basis, was started in January of 1979 to determine the maximum size underground opening that could be mined safely. Monitoring the roof and surrounding pillars for potential failure during this pillar recovery process was accomplished by utilizing a simple rod extensometer to measure roof sag. Boreholes 7.5cm in diameter were drilled 3.5m into the roof to spot any separations or cracks that might have propagated between the bedded layers of rock. Underground openings 85m in length by 46m in width have been mined successfully without roof or surrounding pillar failure. Continued measurements to establish long term results will be necessary.

REE analyses of cumulate plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma can- not be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data is more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a re- appearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultramafic zone of the complex.
