Downstream dispersion curves for certain trace metals were obtained from two mineralized areas in the southeastern U. S. In Lincoln Co., Georgia, 7 sample sets were collected downstream from the Magruder mine, a polymetallic sulfide deposit (Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag-Au) in metavolcanic rocks. Five sample sets were collected along Joe Mill Creek in Grainger Go., Tennessee, downstream from a zone of zinc mineralization in carbonate rocks (Mississippi Valley-type). In both areas, analyses were made of Fe-Mn oxide coatings on lithic fragments and quartz pebbles, and the -80 mesh fraction of the stream sediment. A comparison of the dispersion curves reveals the following: 1.) the anomaly/background ratio is markedly higher in the Fe-Mn oxide coatings for zinc and copper; 2.) the anomaly/background ratlo is markedly higher in the -80 mesh fraction for lead which is not concentrated in the coatings; and, 3.) the Zn/Mn and Cu/Mn ratios in the coatings are useful in that they enhance downstream derectability of mineralization as well as provide for a simpler analytical procedure. There are several potential advantages of using coatings vs. the conventional -80 mesh fraction in stream sediment surveys. Because soluble metal is brought into the stream mainly in groundwater, deeper anomaly sources may be detectable from the oxide coatings than from clastic fractions of alluvium where much of the metal is derived from erosion of soils. Variability due to sampling may also be reduced, providing better discrimination of anomalies. In areas of glacial or alluvial cover, coating surveys may be particularly applicable.

Potash is a generic term that includes potassium chloride, potassium magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and sodium-potassium nitrate mixtures. In the ceramics industry, potash is also used to refer to potassium oxide. Potash, primarily in the form of potassium carbonate, was the first industrial mineral produced in the United States, and the first US patent issued was for an apparatus and process developed in 1790 for its production (Paynter, 1990). Prior to the 1860s, potash was primarily sold as an impure form of potassium carbonate produced by burning hard- wood trees and leaching the potassium salts from the ashes. The major early uses of potash include soap and glass making, dyeing fabrics, baking, and saltpeter for gunpowder. In 1859, the development of a purification process to remove the sodium and magnesium chlorides was developed for the carnallite found at Stassfurt, Germany, and mined potash became available. With the appearance of mined potash and the earlier (1840) discovery in Germany by Justus von Liebig that potash was a nutrient for crops, potash started to be used for high valued crops such as cotton and vegetables. The German potash companies quickly developed a manufacturing process for producing potassium sulfate for tobacco fertilization. German potash supplied nearly all American needs until the embargo of the First World War when imports from Germany were interrupted (Bateman, 1918). With the discovery of potash deposits in New Mexico in 1931, the United States became self-sufficient in potash. In 1962, the United States began importing potash from Canada, and two years later domestic apparent consumption began to exceed domestic production. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the three essential plant nutrients, the "K" of NPK terminology. As a result, 95% of potash production is used as plant fertilizer. In all plants, inadequate potassium diminishes growth, causes increased disease, stalk and stem breakage, and susceptibility to other stress conditions. Plants take up large quantities of potassium from the soil, and potash fertilization replaces this loss so that each new crop can be grown with the same vigor and productivity as the previous year's crop. The potassium depletion of the soil from growing repeated cotton and tobacco crops is well known in the history of southern agriculture in America. George Washington was known to have studied alternative crops that could be grown on soil that had been depleted by repeated tobacco crops. Most of the remaining 5% of potash consumption is by the chemical industry, as potassium hydroxide to produce soaps and detergents, glass and ceramic products, dyes, explosives, alkaline batteries, and medicines. Potash as chemical is used in oil field drilling mud, the aluminum recycling industry, and the electroplating industry. Additional minor uses for potassium chloride include water softener regeneration, sidewalk deicing, and salt substitution for human consumption. Potash is used in the food industry as potassium phosphate, and in production of glass products as potassium carbonate or nitrate. GEOLOGY Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust and the sixth most abundant element in seawater. It is found in silicate minerals of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines. The majority of world potash resources are found in subsurface bedded salt deposits which yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies and are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. Because of the relatively high solubility of potassium minerals, potash from salt deposits is ideal for use as fertilizers. Some potash production is from evaporation of naturally occurring brines, but the vast majority of current domestic and international production is from bedded salt deposits. Sylvite, carnallite, kainite, and langbeinite are some of the more important potassium minerals (Table 1). Sylvinite, a mixture of KC1 and NaCl is the highest grade potash ore. Carnallite can be considered a potash ore when removal of magnesium chloride is included in the beneficiation, but it can also be considered a contaminant when mining for sylvite. Potassium sulfate and potassium nitrate are typically manufactured products. Potassium sulfate is produced from mined minerals through conversion processes in Italy, Germany, and Carlsbad, NM, and from brines in southern California and at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Natural deposits of potassium nitrate occur only in small amounts in Chile. The majority of potash-bearing bedded salt deposits are believed to have originated from the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines in restricted marine basins (Schmalz, 1969). The reflux depositional model for evaporite deposition was first described in the literature in 1888 by Ochsenius. A shallow bar, or sill, across the mouth of a basin lets in a restricted flow of seawater which evaporates into a salt-precipitating brine (Fig. 1). The density of the brine at the distal end increases with increased salinity, sinks to the bottom, and sets up a reflux current of higher density brine back toward the ocean. The sill, which restricts the inflow of seawater, allows inhibited flow of evaporation-concentrated brines back to the ocean. The least soluble salts are precipitated nearer the sill, and the most soluble components come out of solution in the deeper parts of the basin. The result is a lateral facies change in a tabular-shaped deposit that is due to the salinity gradients in the brine (Fig. 2A). The asymmetrical facies distribution of the Paradox Formation (Middle Pennsylvanian) Utah (Hite, 1970), the Prairie Formation (Middle Devonian) in Saskatchewan (Holter, 1972), and the Salado Formation (Upper Permian) in New Mexico (Lowenstein, 1988), might prompt explanation by such a model. Other deposits, such as the Salina Formation (Upper Silurian) in Michigan (Matthews and Egleson, 1974), show a facies distribution that could be described as a bull's eye pattern. Although some small subbasins of high grade sylvite are found near the margins, the potash is generally located in a central part of the basin surrounded by successively less soluble facies (Fig. 2B). Technological Power and Pollution of the Environment The increasing power of technology to destroy and disrupt the natural environment and the ecological systems upon which life depends has reduced man's margin for error in the use of this power. We must act, therefore, to deter and prevent the occurrence of future ecological disasters such as that caused on the British and French coasts by the sunken oil tanker, the TORREY CANYON, the Clinch River fish kill which occurred when a dam broke and released coal ash from a power plant operation, or that which threatened on the Clark Fork River in Montana when a strike at the Anaconda Copper Company threatened to shut down pollution control activities, thereby endangering fish and plant life on the Clark Fork River with copper waste. In the past, pollution of the environment has tended to be slow. But now, the increased power of technology to damage nature, the loss of in¬sulating space and the compression of time--all reduce our margin for error and the cushion which space and time once provided for our mistakes.

Most people, when Borates are mentioned, mentally visualize the famous twenty mule team (really eighteen mules and two horses), trudging across the Mojave Desert or "she burns green Rosie, we are rich." Actually, however, the first use of borax was prior to Babylonian times. Their emissaries had orders to bring borax Iron the Gobi desert for use as a flux by the Babylonian goldsmiths. The borate mineral imported for this is not known but probably was borax. The ancient Persians and Arabians knew about borax and the Arabic word "Baurach" appears in a two thousand year old manuscript. The Sanscrit word for borax was tincana which has been corrupted to tincal. The Chinese were using borax as a glaze in three-hundred B.C. Marco Polo brought the first borax, along with gunpowder and spaghetti, from Mongolia to Europe in the late 1300's. Borax from Tibet was imported to Europe for nearly 500 years. In 1772 boric acid (sassolite) was discovered around Tuscany, Italy as a precipitant from volcanic steam vents. Production of boric acid started there about 1815 and provided the sole competition to the borax from Tibet. Borate deposits in Turkey have been known and exploited on a small scale since the 13th century. It is only recently that the operations are being modernized and production increased. About 1836, borax minerals were found in Chile and Argentina with borax production starting in 1852 in Chile and in Argentina in 1886. During the latter half of the 19th Century, Chile was the principle world producer of borax.

Welcome to Chicago and to the first North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of such a Conference. We are here because of the rapidly mounting interest of technicians the world over in turning the potential use of underground space into sensible and economical benefits to people. This Conference certainly provides a major forum of international importance and scope for the exchange and dissemination of up-to-date knowledge on the technology of underground excavation and tunneling. The discussions will also surely delineate the immediate and longterm challenges we must approach in multidisciplinary force. We must exercise leadership in the problems we are trying to solve. Your program shows the breadth of the technical discussions which are going to be underway here during the three days of this Conference. I am not going into technical aspects or detailed discussions of the many uses to which underground space may be devoted. I also will leave to the technical meetings the outline of the state of the art. But I do want to tell you of the progress being made in channeling the expertise of many of the world's foremost authorities on rapid excavation and tunneling to consider the problems, laying the ground work for needed research, and provide the leadership in converting unused subsurface potentials to improve the quality of life. Since the report of the 1972 Rapid Excavation Conference in the city of Chicago, speculation has continued concerning the estimates of tunneling demand. Little has been published that would persuade me to modify substantially the rather tentative estimates that originated with the National Academy of Sciences-National Academy of Engineering (NAS-NAE) study of 1968 which were recomputed by the United States in the survey of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 1970. The OECD estimates, of course, hedged the really difficult question of forecasting civil construction tunneling demands. In the United States contribution, this was done by predicting both an upper and lower bound for important categories of demand. A discounting procedure was then applied to each of the major sectors of expenditures, permitting a forecast that reflected the current subjective assessment of how extensively and how likely cities were to adopt plans that required tunneling. This was done for water, utilities, transportation and other novel underground facilities. The purpose of this paper is a modest one. In it I wish to describe the efforts made since 1972 to generate more thoughtful and more robust estimates of urban sector demands, and to apply what has been learned to the most difficult category of predictions: those for urban mass transit systems. In 1988, the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center identified three coal cleaning options for achieving flexible environmental control strategies aimed at reducing energy-related SO2 emissions. These are selective agglomeration, advanced froth flotation and advanced cycloning. Each relies on maximum liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter through feed coal comminution to fine and ultrafine sizes. The National Energy Strategy (NES) and the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAA) of 1990 are examples of the nation's commitment to a clean environment. The need to use the nation's energy resources in an environmentally sound manner presents critical challenges and opportunities for coal preparation during the next decade, particularly regarding the control of SO2 emissions. The principal challenge is the development of cost-effective coal preparation approaches for sulfur removal beyond currently achievable levels. Opportunities are provided in the form of incentives associated with a novel system of SO, allowances and a policy environment based on the proper functioning of familiar market forces. An allowance, as defined in Section 402(3) of the Amendments, is "an authorization ... to emit ... one ton of sulfur dioxide." To achieve the objective of the Clean Air Act Amendments, SO, emissions will be eventually capped at 8.12 Mt (8.95 million st) annually by controlling the number of allowances issued nationally. By permitting allowances to be bought and sold once issued, the law encourages "overcompliance" as a source of profit for owners of excess allowances. Many details concerning the administration of allowance trading are not yet written.

Carbon-in-leach (CIL) is conventionally used in gold processing operations when preg robbing components are present in the ore. The CIL process is becoming attractive even in other situations when preg robbing is not a factor. This article discusses the situations in which the CIL circuit can be applied. The results of leach-carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and CIL circuits at Newmont Gold's Mill No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 are presented for comparison: Mill No. 4 was initially designed for a throughput of 4.1 kt/d (4500 stpd). It is presently operating at an average throughput of 6.6 kt/d (7300 stpd) without significant changes to the original design. The design considerations of the Mill No. 4 CIL circuit are discussed. The design of any processing facility represents a series of decisions. The final design options should ultimately be resolved based on economic as well as technical considerations. Every design decision represents some sort of compromise. From the designer's view point, these decisions are made with the conviction that the final product represents the most prudent long-term expenditure. The design throughput rate is a decision reflecting a maximum return for the capital and operating costs that the plant will incur over the life of the mineral resource. The result is a plant that is not operator proof or maintenance free because it would be too costly to build. In this paper, the results of mathematical modeling of casing pipes decontamination from radio-active new mineral forms directly in boreholes using hydrochloric and hydro-silicic-fluoric acids are presented. Modeling for highly and low radioactive coatings on the walls of casing pipes of Anastasievka oil-and-gas deposit was performed using GEMS software, based on the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Calculations have shown that thorianite and goethite, that are present in low-active crusts, detected in casing pipes uplifted from comparatively low depths, are well dissolved in hydrochloric acid, but radiobarite is almost insoluble. For the same acid concentrations, almost all radiobarite of high-active coatings detected in pipes uplifted from considerable depth is dissolved. To evaluate the possibility of decontamination of pipes from radiobarite of low-active coatings, modeling of crust dissolution under the action of H2SiF6 has been performed. The results have shown that for acid concentrations of more than 13 % almost all Ra and Ba are dissolved while all iron and thorium remains in goethite-thorianite solid solution. For the same acid concentration, almost all radiobarite from high-active coatings is dissolved. Therefore, no reagent allows decontamination of pipes from coatings of both types. It seems that successive or simultaneous use of both reagents (HCl and H2SiF6) in certain ratio is required. To clarify this issue, further experimental and model investigations are necessary. The issue of decontamination of casing pipes from galena that is present in high-active crusts also needs to be clarified.

On reflection of certain overall circumstances which have pervaded the gold mining industry, it appears useful to point out some specifics which the writer hopes will improve the potential for success in the application of hydraulic dredges to gold mining activity. I will, prior to entering into that discussion, comment briefly on rule of thumb for the application of the three types of equipment. The three are bucket line, bucket wheel and drag line dredges. From a standpoint of high volume movement over a short distance, between 50 and 300 feet, the drag line dredge is historically the most cost effective type of machine to be utilized if bulk excavation is the single driving consideration. It is typical for this sort of equipment to operate in the 10 to 30 cents per cubic yard range, however, cost of operation is not the sole consideration. Typically the drag line mixes and remixes the material which it excavates. In the event that gold recovery is the object of the exercise, a strong potential for loss of the valued mineral exists. Additionally, drag lines do a poor job of bottom cleaning, particularly if there is a ridged or creviced bottom which must be cleaned and in some cases partially removed to assure recovery of the highest percent of valuable ore. The bucket line dredge has, until recently, been considered an extremely cost effective device. However, the high cost of manufacture of this type of equipment has mitigated against its use in the majority of

INTRODUCTION Underground structures are generally regarded to be safer than surface structures during strong seismic motion, except when crossing a causative fault. Recent studies of observed earthquake damage to tunnels generally support this view, although instances of severe damage and, occasionally, collapse are reported. For proposed underground construction of sensitive structures such as nuclear power plants, liquefied natural gas facilities, and nuclear waste repositories, a verification of the seismic response of underground structures will be required.. This paper discusses the stabilization recommendations used in a study of additional costs required to protect tunnels against ground motion caused by earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions (1). The study is a part of the site investigations for possible construction of a nuclear waste repository. The additional costs estimated in the study are not presented here; only the stabilization measures are presented in the present paper. The tunnels, which would constitute the underground facilities of a possible repository, are assumed to be 5.5 m (18 ft) in diameter and to be located at a depth of 600 m (2,000 ft). Three candidate geological materials are considered: argillite (shale), granite, and tuff. Several peak ground accelerations are used: 0.3g, 0.5g, and 0.7g for earthquakes, and 0.5g, 0.7g, and 1.0g for underground nuclear explosions. Potential damage due only to shaking is considered here. This paper does not discuss problems that result from creep or sudden rupture of intersected faults or from ground failures at portals.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY This short paper deals with the history of the Nickel Plate Mine from 1898 to 1987, with the major focus on the time period 1984 to 1987. Operations from 1898 to 1955 are reviewed in a cursory manner with the emphasis on some interesting points in the early 20th century. A review of the major exploration work carried out in 1984 to 1987 is presented and the process of moving the project through feasibility, government permitting and construction is described. The Hedley gold camp is situated approximately 40 kilometres east-southeast of Princeton, in southern British Columbia. The area has had a long history of gold mining and between 1902 and 1955 approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold were won from several mineralized skarn orebodies. Most production came from the Nickel Plate and Hedley Mascot mines. AN EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY SUMMARY The Nickel Plate is one of the oldest mines in the province. The mine had operated from 1904 to 1930 and, after a period of shutdown, from 1934 to 1955. The mine was revived in 1967 for exploration and. will resume production during the first half of 1987. In the first period the Yale Mining Company and Daly Reduction Company operated for six years and Hedley Gold Mining Company for twenty-one. In the second period the mine was operated by the Kelowna Exploration Company Limited and Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited for twenty-one years. In the present period the mine has been revived by Mascot Gold Mines Limited.

The benefits derived from the use of main fan evasees or diffusers are well known. If a well designed evasee is fitted to a fan either more air will flow through it or the same air flow rate will be discharged at a lower fan speed. This latter possibility will reduce the air power requirement of the mine, the fan input power and the overall energy costs. Despite these apparent advantages, many reports have been received from the industry of poor evasee performance. After examination, it appears that these problems are often caused by installation difficulties or inaccurate design procedures. The performance of an evasee is affected by several independent factors. Some of these factors describe the evasee geometry whilst others are concerned with the behaviour of the air as it passes through the evasee. This paper shows that the divergence angle is by no means the only ;important parameter which affects evasee performance and that the size of the inlet boundary layer has a significant influence. The performance of evasees of differing geometric shape are compared and the criterion to be used for optimum performance is discussed. It is shown that the commonly used evasee efficiency is a poor indicator of good performance. Recent work by the author and others is evaluated and a simple design. guide discussed. For more sophisticated work, details of a. computer program are provided. Finally, a brief resume of the performance of truncated diffusers is given. Since compressibility effects can be ignored for most mining applications, incompressible flow has been assumed for most of this paper.

To concede that I am the most surprised - not to mention the least likely - recipient of the Daniel C. Jackling Award is a true confession I must share with you. Quite honestly, I've asked myself, "Why me?" The Jackling Award has a well-deserved reputation of being a practitioner's, a doer's, a CEO's award - not kudos for a retired school teacher! While at least five of the previous recipients have taught in universities, to my knowledge I am the first to earn the award for "alleged" academic accomplishments. It is humbling enough to keep me livable for a long time. If you glance over the roster of Jackling Award lecture topics, you will spot another anomaly: The lectures last year and this deal with the subject of education - the only two in the 37-year history of the award. The two complement one another rather well, too, C. Allen Bom of Amax addressing critical needs of public education, while I am going to look at the post-high-school years. But I want to focus on more than engineering education. The training role of industry - the principal consumer of our product-also warrants examination. As I hope to establish, there is something unique about mining engineering - education and practice - that is both strength and weakness. We need to recognize that, if we are to cope with the weaknesses in order to capitalize on the strengths. We look at five premises that relate to the uniqueness of the mining engineer and his or her preparation for a professional career.

Off-highway tire costs represent a significant portion of the total mining costs in openpit, truck-shovel operations. To extend the lives of tires, the site-specific factors influencing tire life should be investigated Valuable data can be obtained by combining historical operational data captured by a mine dispatch system with detailed tire and maintenance histories. Assuming that failure counts satisfy a Poisson distribution, F-tests can be applied to determine significant deviations from desired or target counts. The methodology developed in this paper can be used to identify the haul routes and loading and dumping zones that have significantly higher incidences of tire failure. Corrective action can then be targeted at these zones by modifying the shovel or truck operator practices; changing the haul route maintenance and clean up practices; or altering the bench, ramp or waste dump design parameters. An example is given of the correlation of tire separation and tire impact failures with haul routes for a fleet of nine Caterpillar 793C trucks in operation at the Chuquicamata Mine in northern Chile. A high incidence of impact failures was observed for the ex pit ore crusher and for tires installed in the left outer rear position on the trucks. The latter was postulated to be due to a preference for drivers to execute right-hand turns prior to dumping. Recommendations were made to revise crusher and dump cleanup practices and investigate the feasibility of super-elevating the surface of dumping zones to reduce ground pressure on the left rear tires.

We report measurements of the effects of rank, type, and grade of coal on grinding energy and grinding media consumption in a Pitt Mill. The rank of coal has a greater effect on grinding energy than does coal type. The effect of coal grade on grinding energy depends upon the relative grindability of the mineral matter and of the hydrocarbon components of the coal. The mineral matter is primarily responsible for abrasive media wear in a Pitt Mill. The widely recognized HGI test for coal breakage may yield misleading results, particularly for multiple-banded bright and dull coal where the screening procedure used in sample preparation favors the testing of the hardest coal fraction. The work reported here indicates that the Pitt Mill, which grinds the whole coal in a single stage and which yields easily interpreted results, is an excellent candidate for testing coal pulverization characteristics including energy requirements and equipment wear. The measurements of the effects of coal characteristics on grinding energy and on media consumption have been used to estimate the cost of fine grinding in a Pitt Mill. The results, based on a conceptual level evaluation of grinding at the rate of 1 TPH, show that there are trade-offs possible between the cost of energy and cost of media consumption which involve choice of grinding media size. The use of fine-size grinding media to lower grinding energy and to increase throughput can be deceptive because the total cost of grinding must consider both energy and media consumption.

Mine No. 95 is located in Harrison County about 5 miles west of Shinnston, WV, with coal properties covering the northwest corner of Harrison County and the southwest corner of Marion County and with adequate Pittsburgh seam reserves to support the mine for many years. The mine was opened in 1967 and was planned, projected and operated as a room and pillar mine. It is located on a spur branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, has rail loading facilities and shipped by rail during its development stage. In 1972 it was converted to a mine mouth power station supplier and now transports coal by conveyor belt directly to the Harrison Power Station of Allegheny Power System. In 1971 the first longwall unit was installed in a selected area of the mine and immediately an orderly system of planning was developed to overcome the restrictions associated with longwall mining. The first was the development of the technique necessary for the plugging of abandoned oil and gas wells that existed in the area. With the assistance of the Morgan- town Energy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines, this restriction was overcome and thus opened a great potential for longwall mining in northern West Virginia. Other restrictions that had to be considered for longwall planning were dwellings and other improvements, snap top zones, water courses, and adequate bleeder systems, and the handling and treatment of mine drainage. In 1975 the second longwall unit was installed and soon therefore became a total longwall mine.

This paper will describe briefly the steps taken in the development of a Central Florida phosphate ore deposit from acquisition to mining. Further, the design and early operation of the mining and beneficiation facilities will be depicted. During the 1950's, with confidence in the continually increasing requirement for phosphate fertilizer materials essential for producing food, I'. R. Grace & Cc acquired the Hookers Prairie tract containing approximately 45 million metric tons o. (50 million short ton~ of potential phosphate rock product. In 1973, at a point when the Grace captive need for rock was being greatly enlarged by a planned doubling of its Bartow phosphate chemicals plant capacity, the decision was made to expand existing phosphate rock production by building a new mine and plant. The initial annual capacity was to be 2.3 million tons (2.5 million st); however, subsequent investigation pointed to a higher than estimated dragline operating factor 'and the forecast of annual capacity was set at 2.5 million tons (2.8 million st).

For mineral processing spirals, mathematical force equilibrium models are sought to extend the spiral performance envelop. In Part 1 of this report, a complete geometric description of the helical spiral and its trough or channel contour is provided. The secondary circulatory fluid motion in the transverse direction that develops when water flows down a tightly turning curvilinear path and its implications for gravity separation are discussed. Different forces that act on the particle during its passage through the spiral are enumerated and quantified for a better appreciation of their relative contributions and roles in the separation process. Three force equilibrium models from the hydrology literature on sed iment transport are employed to simulate a typical spiral. While the results are promising in that the models mimic the broad performance characteristics of the spiral, what is needed is a more general spiral model taking explicit cognizance of the missing components essential to the spiral description. These are such components as centrifugal force and the steep tangential slope of the channel deck. Results of this latter exercise are deferred to Part 2.
